Description

VW Karmann Safari – 1 of 500 made – Very unique original condition with manual, brochures, and pictures among other rare collectibles related to the camper. Incredibly original and rare Karmann Safari, registered in Switzerland, comes along with a period-correct Karmann trailer, made with a license from J. Peitz Jun in Germany.

The internal and external conditions of the shown car remain mostly original which is a very rare condition and to any true VW collector, this is a masterpiece given the small production number not to mention the complexity to register such types of vehicles never homologated in Europe before. The number of similar Safaris in Europe is expected to be less than five while everything indicates this is the only on in Switzerland to this date.

History: Karmann AG, in Osnabrück, Germany, started producing their first motorhomes in the 1970s with the Karmann Mobil on the VW Kombi T2 platform that later evolved into the T3 platform with the Gypsys and Cheetahs. Before that, in 1962, Brazil became the only country outside Germany to produce the famous Karmann-Ghia car with the VW base given the good relationship between the then VW President Friedrich Schultz-Wenk and Karmann’s Wilhelm Karmann Junior. In the 1970s they produced the first Karmann Touring, based on the European Karmann Mobil, and two years after the launch, the Karmann Safari as the one presented. They were produced always as a T2 base until the mid-90s, finishing the production around 1995 with only 500 units between both Touring and Safari produced.

The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.

Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.

Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.

Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa

Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.

The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build. 

I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix

Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.

After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.

Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.

The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

Saying Goodbye to Beetle: Why We Loved the Beetle Final Edition

It was 1949 and the U.S. was puzzled.

What, exactly, was this car that Volkswagen had shipped here?

That car, of course, was the Beetle, which cut a distinctive silhouette on the automotive scene. Throughout its history, the Beetle has been an innovative design , a  counterculture symbol , starred in Hollywood films, and won races. No matter where or when it appeared, the body and design of the “Bug” has always been instantly recognizable.

To celebrate the heritage of the Beetle, two special models — the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL — were produced for the final-year lineup in 2019. Both were available in coupe and convertible body styles and featured exclusive equipment, unique décor, and heritage-inspired exterior colors.

Classic Colors

When it was produced in 2003, the Beetle Última Edición — which marked the worldwide end of the first-generation Beetle — came in beige and light blue. The Beetle Final Edition models echoed those hues with Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue Metallic.

Enthusiasts recognized Stonewashed Blue Metallic, which was a nod to the 1970 Jeans Bug and most recently seen on the 2016 Beetle Denim. The Safari Uni was a new twist on the Harvest Moon Beige color from the New Beetle generation. The Final Edition models also came in Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Platinum Grey Metallic.

Inside the Final Edition SE models were unique cloth and leatherette rhombus-pattern seats while SEL models featured standard diamond-stitched leather seating surfaces.

Rethinking the Wheels

“A new set of wheels” is more than just an expression: Both Final Edition models featured unique wheel designs. The Final Edition SE models came with 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design .

Final Edition SEL models sported 18-inch white aluminum-alloy wheels in a disc design , reminiscent of the Última Edición whitewall tires. 

Performance, Of Course

While the Final Edition models included a number of new touches, performance remained constant—both trims were powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder TSI® engine with 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. 

Delightful Details

No corner of the Beetle Final Edition was overlooked.

The inside featured a Safari Uni color dashpad with heritage-inspired  Käferfach  glovebox or “Beetle bin”, a gloss-black center console, and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with unique “Beetle” clip.

Outside, stainless-steel pedal caps and a tailgate “Beetle” badge completed the look.

This is much of what makes up the reputation of the island in Australia. But it is not entirely  accurate. I mean, it is accurate, but there’s so much more to island than that.

I had a couple of days in Bali, and while it was not near long enough to truly experience all that it has to offer, I was able to have a lot of fun without lazing on the beach and hitting the night clubs dripping with cheap Bintangs.

Take a Vintage VW Safari

One of the best things I did was take a VW Safari from Kuta to Ubud.

On our last full day in Indonesia, we walked outside our hotel and waiting for us was a rainbow of about 15 vintage VW convertibles.

My squad – Vinh , Phoebe , and Alamby – selected a bright yellow VW because it just looked like the most fun.

We were right.

As we exited the hotel car park, we were unsure what to expect, but we were excited nonetheless. And when our driver flicked on a CD loaded with reggae covers, it set the scene perfectly. In the words of one song we heard at least 3 times, we knew “Everything was going to be alright”.

For the first time on tour, I was actually appreciative of the slow traffic, because it prolonged our road trip. For much of the way out of Kuta we were flanked by passing scooters down the one lane highway. Like most of Asia, traffic rules seem to be suggestion only so this was pretty common.

We made a couple of stops along the road trip. The first stop we made was at some rice fields, a lovely photo stop and great to stretch the legs.

The second was to Ubud Monkey Forest. Some people loved this, some thought it was weird. Others just wanted to get out as quickly as possible. I was somewhere in the middle. The monkeys were unpredictable but were good subjects to photograph.

In our haste to find the exit, Roxanne, Skye and I opted for (read: were directed towards) the shorter route. What we didn’t realise was that the “shorter” route was actually the way back to the start. We wanted to cruise through to where the Bintang was waiting for us on the opposite side but instead we had to “exit through the gift shop”.

It was Skye who put it so eloquently that “We will always remember the bloke whittling a cock out of wood” , as he fashioned a souvenir bottle opener. Classic Bali.

The great thing about the whole trip was, because it’s Indonesia, the driver (and presumably the cops) give zero craps about your safety. Seatbelts are optional. Limbs and GoPro sticks out the side and front of the car are fine. And sitting on the roll bar with your feet on the seat facing backwards with a Bintang is absolutely not a single problem at all. You’re an adult, you can look after yourself.

The whole morning was very freeing and relaxing. Jut roaming around the island, driving past rice fields, through dense forests, and near the near the end through villages. It was a perfect way to spend the last morning with the people I’d gotten to know so well over the last 2 weeks.

It was a perfect end to a whirlwind trip.

So, the watersports was a little disappointing, the parasailing, jet ski and banana boat activities were less than 5 mins each. But, the rest of the trip made up for it. We had a full day of culture and fun experiences from coffee tasting, temples, rice fields, and a secret hotsprings visit. Aditya was happy to wait for us as long as we needed, which really allowed us to take in each location and made sure we didn't feel rushed through any of the site seeing. Aditya however would show us around, teach us about some of the temples and culture, it was super helpful. He also knew ALL the best photo spots, so it took the pressure off my partner and I having to stress about getting the right pics - he was always there to take them for us. On top of that, his very positive bubbly personality made the trip so enjoyable! The temples, rice fields and especially the hot springs were all amazing. Highly recommend. The first tour was Telaga Waja Rafting Bali for 3 hours! The rafting experience was amazing and full of fun moment. Lunch was also provided with this package and we moved to the next destination, Padang Padang beach. It took another 2-3hours to get there but our guide, Naya never get tired. We took some photos around the beach and spent about 30 mins to look around. After that we moved to Uluwatu temple and he took a nice photo for us. we watched Kecak dance from the temple and moved quickly to Jimbaran Seafood restaurant. The dinner was great although we are not seafood person and we were satisfied with this course. Special thanks to Naya again and hope we meet again someday in the future. When you think of the world’s top sports cars, things like speed, track racing and torque all come to mind. But lately, certain performance vehicles are trading smooth tarmac for utility by being converted from high-end race cars into off-road, dirt eating machines.

Earlier this year, Singer, an LA-based mod shop, made headlines for its all-terrain Porsche 911 custom-build, which it referred to as the All-terrain Competition Study (ACS). They used a 964-gen 911 with 450 horsepower and a twin-turbo air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six engine, then amped it up from there with off-road must-haves like oversized tires and mud flaps, an aluminum rear bumper, and roll cages inside.

Honda Civic Type R OveRland

This was a collaboration between Ralph Hosier Engineering and Honda UK: a bespoke Safari build called the OverRland . The prototype was released for the 2019 Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ Day, an annual automotive event for auto journalists and media covering the industry. The OveRland definitely stood out that year.

The team at Ralph Hosier took a Civic Type R and lifted it over four inches, performing custom suspension work and installing custom trailing arm mounts and traverse links. It was outfitted with 18” wheels and BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, making it a head-turner upon first glance. 

Exterior mods like enormous fenders are complimented by an interior roll cage, all of which gives it an “I can go anywhere” look.

The “Willy Safari” 911

Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR), the minds behind various Porsche creations, brought us the Willy Safari , a 1984 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera that’s been upgraded to be stronger than you could ever imagine. This thing can hold a roof-top tent and its campers on the roof, but just to prove the weight it can bear, the designers put a GT3 Cup Car on top because, well, why not. While the race car stacked is more impressive, the average person will probably get more use out of the tent. 

It has the kind of Safari mods that just make sense on a Porsche, like two sleek 30” Black Oak LED curved light bars — one on the front bumper and one on the rear — and a Motec backup cam built right next to the rear light bar, along with fender liners and mud flaps. 

All mounting brackets and holes, as well as dash knobs and switches that KMR deemed unnecessary, were removed. This means the dash is completely smooth. The addition of the Motec Power Distribution Module (PDM) also meant that all fuses and relays were deleted and so the original knobs, switches and anything else that was usually found on the dash was integrated into the PDM and keypad.

Of course it also has a rebuilt 3.4L engine with 340 hp, and the rotisserie body and chassis were both restored by KMR.

Audi TT Safari

Audi also took a turn at transforming one of its iconic sports cars into a Safari build. The brand released its TT Safari concept at the 2019 Wörthersee GTI meet-up in Austria, and it featured a slew of unique upgrades. Interestingly, the thing was created by a group of Audi trainees and since it was just a concept, we didn’t learn anything about what was under the hood.

Still, the most unique component to the Audi TT Safari is without a doubt the exterior centre storage unit, which was built into the space where the rear window usually would be. Instead of the rear window, a few spare tires were thrown in — all just as chunky as those on the vehicle itself.

The grille has been completely redesigned to incorporate driving lamps, and oversized fender flares were also added. The design team went with a yellow colour palette, which included a bold yellow and grey paint job, as well as yellow rally lights, a yellow emblem, and of course yellow accents in the interior.

Tesla Roadster Safari

While this one is just a rendering, the artist’s reasoning behind designing this Tesla Roadster Safari is timely and therefore needs to be included here: “This Tesla Roadster Safari was inspired by the most recent global pandemic,” the designer told Robb Report . “We are living in the apocalypse and definitely need to upgrade our driving situation.” 

It has all of the mods you’d hope for in a rig built to survive the end of the world, like extra four solar panels for extra power, a lifted body kit, massive tires, as well as a roof rack carrying twelve… jerry cans?

Porsche 911 SC Safari

There’s something very Mad Max about this particular Porsche Safari build. It’s another creation from the guys at Kelly-Moss, and they didn’t hold back when it came to design or function. 

The “Rubin,” as it’s known, is a 1981 911 SC with its original 3.0L air-cooled flat-six engine that was rebuilt with KMR touches. It has bespoke lighting including fog lights and LED headlamps, braided wheels with BF Goodrich tires, and reinforced suspension for all your off-roading needs. The exaggerated spoiler and roof rack only add to this one-of-a-kind Safari build.

256 - Volkswagen 1200 in East African Safari trim

Corgi’s first modelling of the iconic Beetle pulled out all the stops. Presented in deluxe packaging, complete with a plastic rhino charging the hapless rally car, the model went on to sell in numbers in excess of 760,000. Packed with features, it was given both an opening boot and bonnet, each lifting to reveal some impressive diecast detailing. Best of all, the model could be steered via a spare wheel mounted on the roof.

The look was completed by East African Rally stickers and decals. Launched in 1965, the model stayed in the Corgi range until 1968.Two years later, Corgi used the same casting for a police version (Corgi 492), which cleverly used the spare wheel’s hole in the roof for an emergency light.

J'ai commandé 3 models dont la VW Coccinelle 1200 East Safari. Cette miniature présente une belle finition et est conforme à ce que je pouvais en attendre. Je ne peux la comparer à un model original que je ne possède pas. Mon seul regret est de constater que les miniatures sont toutes fabriquées en Chine. C'est un peu difficile à admettre quand ont est fan de Corgi made in England.

Je pense qu’il n’y a aucun reproche à faire sur cette reproduction, tout est bien conforme à l’originale, avec la belle boîte-display pour la mettre en valeur!
