Guide to Cinecittà Studio Tour & Film Museum in Rome

Because I run this film and travel blog, I make an extra effort to research everything film-related in a place I’m planning to visit. And that’s literally the only reason why I found out about the Cinecittà Studio Tour before I went to Rome in May last year! How awful is that?! One of the most historically important and the largest film studio in Europe and I didn’t know it existed. For shame.

Luckily I did my research because Cinecittà Studios is a great place to visit for film fans. It’s easy to travel to from Rome city centre via public transport, there’s a fantastic film museum/exhibition on all the famous films that shot in Cinecittà and there’re daily tours around the film sets, too. If all that sounds like your kind of thing, then continue to check out my guide to the Cinecittà studio tour and film museum! The tour is also referred to as ‘Cinecittà Si Mostra’ which means ‘Cinecittà Shows Off’ because you might see that name instead of the far simpler ‘Studio Tour.’

How to get to Cinecittà Studios from Rome by Metro

The Cinecittà Film Studios are based a little further south in Rome than tourists would ordinarily venture but it’s still incredibly easy to visit. Cinecittà has it’s own metro station simply called ‘Cinecittà’ and as soon as you walk out of the underground, the studios are right in front of you on the left. It’s that easy! The station is on the ‘red’ line meaning it’s direct from Rome Termini station . Metro trains depart every three minutes and the journey takes about 20 minutes.

Single metro tickets within Rome cost €1.50 . Travelling to Cinecittà via public transport in Rome really is so simple. I don’t think the studios have a car park but I really wouldn’t drive anyway, travelling by metro is too easy.

Cinecittà might seem like a bit of a ghost town when you arrive. But if you think about it, film studios tend to be in quiet, out of the way locations, don’t they? If you’ve ever visited the Harry Potter Studio Tour then you’ll know it’s a trek from London city centre!

Cinecittà Studio & Film Museum History

Pronounced ‘chinny-cheeta’, the ‘Cinecittà Shows Off’ part of the film studio’s business opened in 2011, but the studio’s history goes much further back.

The Cinecittà Studios were built in 1937 by none other than Fascist dictator Mussolini . The Italian film industry was experiencing a low so he built the studio in reaction to this, and of course to produce propaganda films for his own cause. During WWII, western allies bombed the studios and they were temporarily turned into a displaced persons’ camp.

Il cinema è l’arma più forte/ Cinema is the most powerful weapon  – Cinecittà’s first slogan

The 1950s were a period of rejuvenation for Cinecittà Studios. Tax/money incentives attracted American productions to make films at Cinecittà like  Roman Holiday  (1953) and sword and sandal epics like  Ben-Hur  (1959). This influx of American productions in Rome is named the ‘Hollywood on the Tiber’ era. Revered Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini also made several of his films there, including La Dolce Vita  (1960) .

Nowadays, Cinecittà Studios is still very much in use. Recent films shot at the film studios in include Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002) ,  The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou  (2004) and the TV series  The Young Pope (2016) amongst several others. So it’s still a working film studio as well as being open to visitors! Usually, international productions are drawn to Cinecittà by the talented art department.

Cinecittà Film Museum & Exhibition

So, there is a ‘film museum exhibition’ part of the whole Cinecittà Si Mostra experience and a guided tour around the studio/sets which I’ll get into next. I recommend checking out the Cinecittà film museum before your Cinecittà studio tour. You’ll appreciate seeing the studios and sets more after you’ve learnt about the film studio’s history.

The film museum has three different buildings and exhibitions. The first is called ‘Why Cinecittà’ and focuses on the studio’s inception and early history. The Fellini years, really. There are tonnes of fantastic costumes and behind the scenes pictures. The second is called ‘Shooting in Cinecittà’ and this is the most impressive part of the exhibition. Costumes, photos and sets from Roman Holiday, Cleopatra  (1963) and many others are housed in this bit.

And the final part of the Cinecittà exhibition is ‘Cinecittà’s Educational Route’ where you learn more about the ‘behind the scenes’ of filmmaking. The role of the director, scriptwriter, etc. which I imagine was built with school trips in mind because Cinecittà hosts a lot of those. You also get to step inside the submarine built for the film U-571  (2000) at Cinecittà.

It’s a fantastic exhibition and really well thought out! An interesting set-piece from Fellini’s Casanova  (1976) is also out in the open for visitors to see on the grassy area.

Cinecittà Studio Tour (Cinecittà Si Mostra) in English

After you’ve had time to look around Cinecittà’s film museum and exhibitions, you’ll meet either an Italian or English-speaking guide for your Cinecittà studio tour. The tours are scheduled multiple times per day and are included in your ticket price. I wouldn’t visit Cinecittà without going on a tour as it’s the only way to see the studios and sets. No need to book or anything, just wait outside the café at the arranged time for the correct language.

What you visit on the tour depends on what is being filmed during your visit. But it’s very likely that you’ll at least see the sets of Ancient Rome for the HBO series  Rome  (2005-2007), The Temple of Jerusalem built for The Young Messiah  (2016) and several others.

So… A lot of these sets are from shows I don’t watch and films I’ve never even heard about. Don’t get me wrong, the tour guide was fantastic and the sets are just brilliant. I find it stuff like this so fascinating, despite having never watched any of the films/TV shows in real life. But the sets aren’t from super well-known films. So if you’re not a lover of cinema, you may not appreciate the Cinecittà studio tour or exhibitions. But if you do love film, then you just have to visit!

Visitor Information & Tickets

Cinecittà is open to visitors every day except  closed Tuesdays  from 9:30-18:30. However, new visitors cannot enter after 16:30. And unless you’re visiting the film studios with 15 of your closest friends, booking is 100% NOT required . In the nicest way possible, the place was dead when I visited in May/June. I had a decent amount of friendly people show up for my tour, but I just can’t imagine it’s the kind of attraction that gets packed out.

Tickets are €15 for adults, which includes the exhibitions and tour , with other options for concessions. I think the admission price is well worth what’s on offer. When you visit the Cinecittà studios, don’t forget to check the set and studio tour times for your language on the website . I joined the English-speaking tour at 15:15 in the afternoon after leisurely wandering around the exhibitions for approx 90 minutes and that worked out perfectly. The tour portion is also around 60-90 minutes and my guide was fantastic.

There’s also a café and a bookshop on-site, too! I do think most of the books were in Italian but nevermind…

  • Fun 80% 80%
  • Activity Level 100% 100%

Our Cinecittà Studios Tour in Rome will take you to see and walk amongst the sets where history of cinema was made.

Cinecittà studios were inaugurated in 1937 but it was after the second world war when great directors such as leroy and william wyler chose these studios to film two movies that reinvented the history of cinema: “quo vadis” and “ben hur” (1959). the cinecittà studios also played a role in showing and promoting the city of rome and the dolce vita, especially after the release of the homonymous film “la dolce vita” (1960) by federico fellini which was also filmed in cinecittà sets.....

More recently Cinecittà Studios hosted important international productions such as “Gangs of New York” by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio , “The Passion of the Christ” by Mel Gibson or even action films like “Six Underground” by the famous blockbusters’ director Michael Bay. The Academy Awards winner Paolo Sorrentino chose Cinecittà Studios to film his latest HBO series “The Young Pope” and the second season “The New Pope”, including reconstructions of the interiors of the “Sistine Chapel” and “Saint Peter’s Basilica” and other many directors and actors all over the world still want to have the chance to film in Cinecittà Studios , also well-known for being efficient in services. Even Quentin Tarantino could not resist and in 2016 filmed his eighth movie “The Hateful Eight”, starring Kurt Russel and Samuel L. Jackson , and after the production the movie was shown in the famous Studio 5 known for being “ Fellini’s Favorite Studio ”.

Cinecittà Studios Tour will take you to see and experience the feelings of being in a real movie set and allow you to completely enter in the history of cinema , visiting the museum inside which displays some pictures, interviews and no less than the original costumes worn by movie stars such as Liz Taylor . The exhibit also includes a room completely dedicated to Sergio Leone , where some of his most iconic scenes are projected. The following part of it will introduce you to the “professions of cinema” where each room is dedicated to a different one: the director, the screenwriter, the sound crew, costumes designers, the secrets of fiction and the technology of the green screen. After the show, you will walk through the sets where, among them, you can find the “Ancient Rome” where the series “Borgia” was filmed, the “Temple of Jerusalem” and “Florence 1400”.

The Cinecittà Studios compound also offers “Cinebimbicittà” for your children! It is a creativity lab where they can get closer to the world of cinema and participate in laboratory programs and special events. Your children could discover the secrets of filming and explore the magic of costumes and production design.

Do you like cinema and want to visit the places where your favorite movie was shot in Rome? Go check out our “ Movie Tours ” section and choose among the tour of awarded movies such as Fellini’s “Dolce Vita”, Allen’s “To Rome With Love” or Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty”.

At Cinecittà Studios Lives The History Of Italian Cinema

Cinecittà Studios offers their guests a chance to experience the history of Italian cinema in an amazing lot south of the historic center of Rome, Italy.

Cinecitta Studios - The Factory of Dreams

The Factory of Dreams

The Cinecittà Studios are a short subway ride from the historical center of Rome ( Centro Storico ) and when you arrive you will be transported to a magical and historical “city” that will bring to life some of the biggest movies and historical events from the 80 year history of the studio.

Cinecittà is a film and television studio on the grandest scale that is actively in use, but you can visit portions of the lots, sound stages, and sets that are open to the public daily, except Tuesday. There are guided tours on the weekend in Italian and English that will bring you around the sound stages and during the week you can enjoy the exhibits on your own.

Cinecittà Studios - Director’s Chair

Director’s Chair

The Brief History Of Cinecittà Studios

Founded by mussolini.

The Cinecittà Studios were founded by Benito Mussolini in 1937 as a way to promote Rome and as a propaganda tool for the Fascist leader. Today, the studio uses the nickname Factory of Dreams ( Fabbrica dei Sogni ), but back then the slogan was “Cinema is the most powerful weapon”. Early films were not as successful as later films, but the goal at first was to create films that promoted the Fascist colonization of Africa and the strength of Italy.

During World War II, the studios were bombed by the allied forces and later used as a camp for refugees that fled Rome after the bombings and even later it included refugees from Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. During our tour of the studio, our guide pointed out signs and other indications from its time as a displaced persons camp.

Cinecittà Studios Create Neorealismo

After the war and after Mussolini’s government was expelled, Italian Neorealism grew in popularity. This film movement showed the grittier side of Rome and Italy with stories that highlighted the struggles of the poor and working class. These were originally filmed on location (i.e. outside of the studios) using nonprofessional actors. Some of the better known films from this genre include:

  • Rome, Open City  ( Roma città aperta ) by Roberto Rossellini
  • Shoeshine  ( Sciuscià ) by Vittorio de Sica
  • Bicycle Thieves  ( Ladri di biciclette ) by Vittorio de Sica

Cinecittà Studios

Fellini’s Love For Cinecittà Studios

Federico Fellini, who apprenticed during the Neorealism period, is considered one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. After the popularity of the Neorealism style, a more extravagant and fanciful style, lead by Fellini, gained popularity across Italy and the world. His style was so influential that the term Felliniesque was coined. In response to this, Fellini said:

“I’d always dreamed of being an adjective when I grew up. I am flattered by it. I can imagine what the Americans mean when they say Felliniesque: opulent, extravagant, dreamlike, bizarre, neurotic.”

In the Cinecittà studio lot there are numerous indications of the popularity and importance of Fellini. First is the exhibit Felliniana , which they describe as:

“… an immersive dive into a world of Felliniesque imagination and a dreamy and evocative narrative of the friendship between the director and the production designer and their artistic partnership ”.

The second point of interest is Stage Number 5 , which you will only see on the guided tour. In this soundstage, which is dedicated to Fellini and was the director’s favorite, you will discover where he filmed the majority of his projects.

Cinecittà Studios Today

Cinecittà Studios - Fellini Exhibit

Fellini Exhibit

The studio continues to be a popular place to create films and TV shows. When we visited the studio, every soundstage was booked, which unfortunately limited our access due to security and privacy issues. In the last thirty years the studio hosted films by international directors like Anthony Minghella, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson and Mel Gibson and it has also been host to the Italian version of Big Brother and Paolo Sorrentino’s series The Young Pope and The New Pope .

What Can You See And Do In Cinecittà Studio Tours?

You have two options for touring the studio, and the first is a self-guided tour. You can stroll around the open grounds (not around the sound stages) and spend time looking at the open exhibits. These include the Presidential Building ( Palazzina Presidenziale ) that will immerse you in the history of great Italian movies and film genres. You can then go Backstage , which shows the various trades, including direction, screenwriting, sound editing, costumes and visual effects. You can move onto the set of an American submarine made for the film U-571 and end up in Felliniana , which is a tribute to the great director.

Cinecittà Studios - Academy Award

Academy Award Winning Studio

The second option is to pay for a guided tour, which lasts about 1 hour. In addition to the exhibits mentioned above, you will also go behind the locked gates and walk amongst the sound stages. Cinecittà includes 19 indoor sound stages and a number of outdoor sets that from time to time undergo different setups according to the needs of the ongoing film and TV productions.

When Can You Visit Cinecittà Studios?

Guided tours are available on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only so that you won’t interfere with any ongoing productions. The self-guided areas are also available Monday through Friday.

How Long Does The Visit To Cinecittà Last?

The guided tours of the studios will last approximately 1 hour, but you will have additional time for some self-guided touring and you can take as much time as you want. There is also a snack bar where you can sit in the shade and enjoy an espresso or a glass of wine, which ever you need.

How To Get To Cinecittà Studios?

There is parking available if you plan on driving to the studio, but the easiest way to get to the studio is on the subway ( Metropolitana ). From whichever stop is closest to you, take  Metro A  south towards  Anagnina . It is the penultimate stop conveniently named  Cinecittà.  When you exit the station you will be right at the studio.

Southern Rome

Cinecittà is Italy's foremost film studio, founded in 1937 by Mussolini and used for many iconic Italian and international films. It's possible to take a tour of the studios (Cinecittà Si Mostra, or Cinecittà Shows Off), where you get to visit several impressive sets, including 1500s Florence and ancient Rome, and there are interesting exhibitions, one dedicated to the work of Federico Fellini, and another exploring the studio's history. Of the thousands of films shot here, almost 50 have won Oscars.

Originally intended by Mussolini to turn out propaganda pictures, the studios were used during WWII variously as a refugee camp and hospital, but postwar they went from strength to strength. In the 1950s many major Hollywood films were made here, including Cleopatra, and Rome earned the nickname Hollywood on the Tiber. This was also to become Fellini's stomping ground – he even had a bedroom here – and La Dolce Vita was filmed in Theatre 5, within which the director recreated Via Veneto. Later, spaghetti westerns dominated the schedule. Recently it was used for the HBO series Rome and Paolo Sorrentino's The Young Pope .

At certain times guided tours of the sets are offered in English; check the website.

Note, movie-themed amusement park Cinecittà World is located 25km southwest of Rome.

Exhibition and displays

The MIAC display route unfolds through themed areas over 12 main rooms spread out in an area of 1,650 sqm. Each room explores a theme, using visual and audio material, accompanied by textual support and an immersive installation designed to accentuate the sense of the theme in the visitor.

A wall of 30+ metres where, with the auxiliary of a surprising animated graffiti, you can read, watch and touch dates and events from the history of the audiovisual sector in Italy, from pre-cinema to today. A clever tool that uses graphics and projections to wrap information in a feast for the eyes.

A waiting area, a foyer, where the signs from famous cinema theatres jostle with familiar sounds and jingles.

The emotion of the imagination

Viewers’ faces and dozens of mirrored fragments are projected onto screens to replicate memorable scenes from Italian films. A demonstration of how films are the mirror where we discover our own emotions: fear, desire, adventure, dreams, hopes...

Actors and actresses

The actors and actresses room celebrates the prime representatives of a film or a show. A mosaic of sequences and close-ups returns them to us: legends and divas, stars for their admirers, prizes, festivals. Elusive icons who were in some cases used as aspirational examples followed by the Italians for their aesthetic or, even more frequently, emotional appeal. Three spectacular frames formed of 100 light bulbs enclose them in one single, bejewelled dressing room.

Cinema and TV have become an essential reference for studying and understanding our history. The screens in this room offer an account that is out of time, a powerful journey through the identity of the Italians - or the difficult struggle to create one.

The audiovisual medium, as is well known, was a key element in the linguistic unification of Italy. However, there are also huge numbers of dramas based on the dialects and regional natures of a country that has been unified but never very united. The room resounds with sounds, words and overlapping dialogues in addition to the selected scenes showing on 3 vast lightboxes. The combination of audio and video restores the stunning richness of our cinema and our language.

Two cement walls, both 2.5 m high, display archive material and films to show representations of power experienced by Italians over time. Unforgettable faces and memorable masterpieces. Power experienced as abuse or with resilient irony. Two names in particular represent this: Gian Maria Volonté and Totò.

Landscape, desire, comedy, produce

The enchantment of the Italian landscape: unmistakeable, abused, immortalized by cameras. The produce and the civilization of that landscape: our nutrition. The images of desire, veiled or explicit. And, then, a key genre in our cinema canon, so important it has a name of its own: la ‘commedia all’italiana’. The four different themes are reproduced on four vast screens, all at the same time. In the midst, a spectacular landscape of the moon, the earth and luminous stele that reacts to the beats of the film clips. A surprising tactile and visual experience, the encouragement to look at things differently.

The soundtrack of our lives. Music for film, musicals – in the country of melodrama and musicarelli – from the first film with sound, La canzone dell’amore (1930), to the brilliant Italian composers: Morricone, Rota, Trovajoli, Piovani… Luminous sheet music lights up with the tempo and tone of this irresistible sound montage.

The masters

The names that take Italian cinema into the world: seen in action, backstage, during breaks and at memorable awards ceremonies. Alongside, are the other Masters - the professionals and craftspeople, the pillars of the industry who contribute their skill and brilliance to building the personal visions of creative minds. An architectural element of shining lights and metal mesh designs pillars and skyscapes in light.

Kaleidoscope

An entirely mirrored room offering no dimensional reference points, where luminous trails dialogue with a video column in the centre. A box of mirrors that creates infinite reflections. The future is how we see it.

The Charming Story of Cinecittà Studios in Rome

cinecitta tours rome

5.6 miles to the south-west of Rome, hidden among the quiet suburbs, and just a stone’s throw away from the famous Appian Way, lies Cinecittà Studios: Europe’s Dream Factory. It is the largest film and movie studio in continental Europe, covering and area of 99 acres, and with a production community of 5.000 multilingual specialists it certainly lives up to its name, Cinecittà, which literally translates to “Cinema City.”

Cinecittà Studios were founded by Benito Mussolini in 1937 to be used for propaganda films in the promotion of fascism. More than 100,000 pre-war news reels are said to be stored within the studio’s vaults: including Mussolini’s declaration of war on the allied forces. In January 1945, with Germans scarcely across the Alpes, Roberto Rossellini started work on his classic war movie: Rome Città Aperta (open city). It has since been described as a classic piece of Italian Neorealism, in which the Hollywood standards are rejected, amateur actors are used where possible, and authentic locations are used for outdoors scenes. This would not only have been easily achieved, but also impossible to avoid among the war torn streets of post-war Rome. The film, shot on a grainy news-reel style, won several awards including: the Grand Prize at Cannes Film Festival (1946) and the New York Film Critics Award for best foreign film (1946). Not only did this draw attention to the Italian film industry, but also to Cinecittà Studios as a viable alternative for Hollywood producers looking to cut production costs.

By the end of the 1950s with string of hit movies behind it, including Helen of Troy (1959), Cinecittà had established a fine reputation on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1957 Hollywood would, again, come calling. This time it was director William Wyler accompanied by “a cast of thousands”, and Charlton Heston, who came to shoot the MGM classic Ben-Hur. This was no ordinary movie: it would use more than 300 sets, 10,000 extras and more than 100,000 costumes. Its budget exceeded $15 million and it even had its own artificial lake built right in the Cinecittà back-lot, for use during the many galleon scenes. But the scene that is most fondly remembered is the famous Chariot race between Ben-Hur and Messala. It costed $1 million dollars to build the set, and required more than 1500 extras just for that one scene alone. By the time the set was built it covered more than 18 acres and was the largest single set to have ever been built for a movie. On its release in November 1959 it was a runaway success. and went on to earn more than $90 million at the box office and save MGM from financial disaster. To this day Ben-Hur stands as a triumph of cinematography and the jewel in the crown of Cinecittà Studios.

In 1963 another epic Hollywood production followed; this time it was the turn of the movie that almost bankrupt 20th Century Fox: Cleopatra. For despite lavishly designed sets and a forever increasing budget, Cleopatra is remembered more for the off-screen romance between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor than for anything else. The off screen extramarital affair of these two stars caused public outrage.

R.Burton & E.Taylor from Cleopatra

More recently, in 2001 Martin Scorsese brought his “Gangs of New York” to Rome and in 2005 the HBO-BBC joint production “Rome” followed. Despite the onslaught of directors from across the Atlantic and Britain, Italian bread cinema was not forgotten. Legendary Rimini born Film Director Federico Fellini got his first writing credit on Mario Mattoli’s comedy Il Pirata Sono Io ( The Pirate’s Dream) in early 1940, while not yet twenty years old. His most revered work La Dolce Vita is seen as the bridge between Neorealism and Modern Art films: classic Italian cinema meets Andy Warhol beneath the Trevi fountain.

The movie broke box office records, but was condemned by the Vatican for its scenes of sex and drugs, and also for its “questionable moral standing”. Despite this, it made more than $19 million at the box office and become Fellini’s most financially successful film.

Federico Fellini continued his love affair with Cinecittà for the rest of his life; famously calling it “my idea world, the cosmic space before the big bang”. And indeed, its rich and beautiful history cannot be denied; Audrey Hepburn honeymooned here, Ursula Andress' career started here and the largest ever “prop” in cinema history, the 40ft Trojan Horse for Helen of Troy, was also built here. But ghosts alone cannot keep a business running. And, after all, beneath the magic, the dreams, the myths and legends, Cinecittà is about business. This means that the studios have to find the right way to transit the charming movie studios of the old times into the 21st century, turning into a multi-purpose complex that can “ride-out” Italy’s ever deepening financial crisis.

Threats from the east, particularly from the newly built Korda Studios on the outskirts of Budapest, are causing some real concerns in Italy. Not only can Korda offer “state of the art” facilities, but with the incentive of some great tax breaks can also offer production at almost a third of the cost. Nevertheless, Cinecittà can count on the fact that it is still the “only studio in the world with pre-production, production and full post-production on one lot”. This literally means that you can walk in with a script and out with a completed movie. This may mean a lot to smaller local budget films, but with the digital age well upon us, and the ever expanding Korda, will this be enough to entice the big guns? Walking through Cinecittà Studios today is a fantastic experience as you can still feel the magic of the great old times. And as with all great movies there could still be a twist in the tale.

Corso Decaduto

An $800 million Cinecittà World theme park was announced in November 2009 to be in development and hopes to capitalise on past glories. However, the future still remains uncertain for Cinecittà. If it can reinvent itself then maybe it can find its way back to its golden days of the 1950s and 60s, but whatever the future holds, Cinecittà will always have the splendours of its past. And so will we.

Cinecittà, Rome

Dates: 1937 – present.

Open for Tours (must arrange in advance) Tour website:  http://cinecittastudios.it/en/exhibitions/individual

Vast studio complex, housing the largest soundstage in Europe. Recently opened a theme park which runs tours around the studio.

Hollywood Reporter article about the theme park delays

Construction details at Themeparx.com

April 1937 – Studios founded by Benito Mussolini and his head of cinema Luigi Freddi for propaganda purposes (with the intention of promoting Italy and the current fascist ideals through cinema), under the slogan “Il cinema è l’arma più forte” (Cinema is the most powerful weapon). The complex, in south-east Rome, was designed as a complete centre of production, with facilities covering everything from training, through the production of films, to post-production. Within six years, almost 300 films had been made at the new studios, assisted by the Alfieri Law, introduced in 1939, which was designed to assist home-grown film production

1943 – During World War II, Italy surrendered in 1943 and the Germans took over the country. They looted Cinecittà, and the film production facilities were moved to temporary accommodation in Venice. Over the next two years, Cinecittà was subjected to Allied bombing.

1945 – 1947 – Following the war, the studios of Cinecittà were used as a displaced persons’ camp. The period from 1943 onwards contributed towards the forming of the cinematic genre known as Italian neorealism; the Roman filmmakers, denied both funding and access to the facilities of Cinecittà, took to the streets and used amateur actors. The resulting films, like Rome, Open City, carried a strong sense of the difficulties with poverty and identity being faced in Italy at the time.

1950s – American production companies in search of cheap facilities began to turn their attention to Cinecittà. Films like Roman Holiday and Three Coins in the Fountain took advantage of both the facilities at Cinecittà and the possibilities for location shooting in Rome itself. The studios also hosted many epic productions, an early example being Quo Vadis? in 1951. Ben Hur was filmed here in 1959, and the production of Cleopatra was moved from London to Cinecittà following problems with budgeting, bad weather and Elizabeth Taylor’s health. Cinecittà also became the studio most closely associated with Federico Fellini.

1990s – After a period of near-bankruptcy in the 1980s, in the 1990s Cinecittà was privatized by the Italian government.

1991 – It hosted the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest. The venue had been changed from Sanremo because of security concerns.

1994 – Pink Floyd performed, on three consecutive nights, at the studio during The Division Bell Tour on September 19–21, 1994.

2007 – On August 9, 2007, a fire destroyed about 3000 m² (32,000 sq. ft.) of the Cinecittà lot and surroundings. The historic part that houses the sets of classics such as Ben-Hur were not damaged, however a good portion of the original sets from the HBO/BBC series Rome were destroyed.

2012 – 19 July – A fire destroyed part of Studio 5, where La Dolce Vita was shot. Hollywood Reporter article

2013 – Construction underway on Cinecitta World, an international-level theme park, at Dino Studios, created in the 1960s by Dino de Laurentis.

Elizabeth Lev is something else. Rome is her city, and this tour is her work of art. She has an incredible way of engaging with the history, the art, the monuments, and the stories. You'll find yourself wanting to spend all your time with her. The tour explores the ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art periods; and it visits sites like 13th century frescos above the church of Santa Cecilia and art collections behind the facades of the Spada palace. You'll be wowed by all of the layers of the city and how it feels like Rome has been hitting a string of never-ending home runs since antiquity.

Elizabeth Lev: Borrowed but Never Baroque, Bernini & 17th Century Rome Arrow

This tour of Elizabeth Lev's meets up outside the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica . Our group was tiny, but Liz will accommodate larger private groups. She is both an incredible academic brain and a witty storyteller. And her tour shows of the dramatic  range of Baroque art and architecture within Rome. This tour is great for anyone who wants a deep dive into the city's Baroque history, and anyone who wants to appreciate Rome in an experience that's not quite in the guide books.

LivItaly Tours: Vespa Sidecar Tour Arrow

The Vespa Sidecar tour is entirely private and can be customized for return visitors who may have already seen the highlights. It is not, though, a show-up-when-you-want activity. It can be organized for up to six participants, but you'll only be in a group if you choose to be. My tour was perfect because it was just me and the driver/guide Luca.  As a licensed guide, he knows his history, is easy to understand, and is very friendly. He always has a plan, but is quick to change it at the first request. We talked Rome and food and went to all the right places, from big names to more under the radar finds.

Rome 500 Experience: The 7 Hidden Gems of Rome Tour in an Antique FIAT 500 Arrow

There's a lot of reasons to sign up for this tour through greater Rome, not least is that you get to drive yourself with the top down in a vintage Fiat 500. Another nice perk: Rome's traffic is seriously easier to deal with when traveling in convoy (the group can have up to 50 cars in it). And, as you will get your own car to drive, it can feel like a private tour, although groups are also organized by language, so communication shouldn't be a problem for anyone.  But most importantly, you just look so much better behind the wheel of a classic Italian car.

Appian Way bicycle tour Top Bikes Rome

Top Bike Rental & Tours: Ancient Appian Way, Catacombs, and Aqueducts Park Tour Arrow

This tour will take the better part of your day (it's six hours start to finish). But going by bike to these outer city sites —the old Appian Way via the ancient aqueduct—is the easiest and most entertaining way to see them. Plus you won't want to cut out early: it ends with wine and some nibbles in Caffarella Park, which is so expansive it feels like you're in the countryside even though it's smack in the middle of the greater city. Bikes feel brand new and the confidence of the tour guides will put any nervous riders at ease.

Tram Tour Rome

Rome Tram Tracks Tour Arrow

This tour is a rocking dance  party on a vintage tram that rumbles through Rome. It lasts two hours, during which you'll cut up the dance floor, drink, and cheer as you roll past some of Rome's most iconic sites . This is really an evening activity for those who don't just want to go get dinner somewhere in town. The greatest part, however, may have been how the senior citizens on our ride managed to upstage all the thirty- and forty-year olds on the dance floor.

Casa Mia Tours: Rome Cinema & Food Arrow

Rome has a rich history of cinema, and while you could take any tour with any guide, there is nothing quite like seeing its cinematic history with Eleonora Baldwin, Cinecittà Studios veteran and granddaughter of famed director Vittorio de Sica, four-time Academy Award winner and father of Italian cinema. This tour is both Rome's history and Eleonora's story, and she is so passionate that it will make you want to spend all day with her, and all night watching films. There are only three requirements—a pair of comfy shoes, an empty stomach, and a reservation.

Rome Tour NonCatholic Cemetery tour

Non-Catholic Cemetery Tour Arrow

You should always visit the truly Roman neighborhood of Testaccio when in Rome, but this tour of its historic non-Catholic Cemetery gives you reason to stay in the area after you've hit its prime trattorias. It's a beautiful, unusually tranquil space, filled with bougainvillea and museum-worthy sculptures in the middle of the city. The informative guides will school you on the cemetery's 400-year history as you amble past the tombstones of Keats, Percy Shelly, and other famous expats.

Fall and Rise of Rome Tour Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo

Context Travel: Fall and Rise of Rome Arrow

This historical tour starts at a medieval church in San Clemente and ends at the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Its chronology spans from the Roman Empire's fall to the Renaissance's beginnings. The guide Philip was total pro. He's an archaeologist with a great sense of humor and passion for every site. He knew exactly what to show me and could even point out where to stand so I had the best understanding of the sights. People who enjoy Roman, religious, and art histories will  love this tour. It's also a great opportunity for people who have already seen the main tourist attractions to see some gems off the beaten path.

Johnny Madge: Olive Oil Tours Arrow

You'll have to trek well outside the city (close to an hour) to reach the olive groves in the Sabina country, but it's well worth the trip. Johnny Madge is an olive oil authority , judging competitions all over the world and this is his backyard. He clearly loves it, and that love is contagious. Tourees will learn to distinguish extra virgin olive oil from everything else and importantly that you do not drizzle oil on your food. You pour it. This  is best for foodies who want to get out of the city and deep dive in Roman food.

Trajan's Column at Piazza Venezia Domus Romane Rome Tour

Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini: Multimedia Tour Arrow

The Domus Romane are ancient Roman villas and other structures, abandoned in antiquity, filled in with debris, and inadvertently used as foundations for Palazzo Valentini, a Renaissance palace turned government office building. They are now underground, obscured by buildings and pavement just beside Piazza Venezia. On this tour, in situ multimedia renderings recreate an Imperial Rome domus, as well as some aspects of Roman life. The guides are actual archaeologists, and the fact-checked audio is delivered cleanly. These language-specific multimedia tours are popular though, and must be booked in advance.

The Rome Food Walking Tour

Tavole Romane Food Tours: The Rome Food Walking Tour Arrow

Think of Tavole Romane, the food-and-wine-focused walking tour of Rome, as getting access to the little black book of those who know the city's food scene best. Owners Gabriele and Silvia customize the tours based on the interests of each intimate group, which could mean wine bars in Trastevere or an aperitivo-heavy hop through the centro storico, led by somms, chefs, or another tapped in member of Rome's food scene.

Latteria Studio: Market to Table Arrow

This market tour and cooking class began with a wonderful walk through the market to Latteria Studios, a functional cooking studio and photo set. Alice, Rachel, and Carla, who head up the activities, are real professionals. They know everyone at the market, and they know all about food. Sitting at the table at the end of day fosters a real sense of community with what may have been a group of strangers from different countries and continents. You'll immerse yourself in Rome and make new friends at the same time.

Cinecittà Studios Rome Tours

Cinecittà Studios: VIP Tour Arrow

This is your chance to see the studio that was once home to Fellini and Leone. It's still a working studio though, so you'll need to follow the guide's itinerary to the letter. She will know about Cinecittà though: its history, and its film productions, and its famous alumni. Also, Cinecittà owns every set that was built on the lot. Master artisans created them all—ancient Rome, a 1940s submarine, and fantastical, imagined worlds. They perfectly accurate to their settings, as well as pristinely preserved.

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.

A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One

My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.

Radio-Connected Modern Whispers

As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Unforgettable Experience

This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.
