Game Reserves Near Cape Town

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

safari park cape town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by travellers planning a trip to the Mother City. Happily, the answer is 'Yes indeed', and while the Western Cape isn't quite in the same league as a bushveld escape to the Kruger National Park, you can certainly enjoy a taste of safari close to Cape Town.

Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the 'Big Five' (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching offshore. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

In the evening, you might be lucky enough to spot black-backed jackal and bat-eared foxes. If you’d rather not go it alone, guided nature drives are available.

4.  !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

!Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre

Less than an hour from Cape Town along the R27 ‘West Coast’ road, the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the San people of southern Africa, and the recent addition of luxury cottages and cabins has made it a perfect weekend escape.

But alongside the cultural insights you can also enjoy a ‘safari-lite’ experience here, with the 850-hectare reserve home to herds of eland, springbok, zebra, wildebeest and other small game. There’s plenty of birdlife too – keep a keen eye out for Yellow-billed kites and Jackal buzzards – and with no predators on the reserve you can happily hike, bike and run without worrying about toothy residents. Just keep an eye out for snakes. Or sign up for the 90-minute nature drives led by local guides, who will share the history of the reserve on an entertaining ramble that delivers superb views of the wild west coast.

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

7.  Nuwejaars Wetlands

Nuwejaars Wetlands

No visit to the Western Cape is complete without a trip to Cape Agulhas, the southern tip of Africa. And on the Agulhas Plains hardy winemakers make full use of the ancient soils and cooling sea winds to craft remarkable Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. But after a tasting at Black Oystercatcher Wines, be sure to book a guided nature drive through the nearby Nuwejaars Wetlands .

This remarkable conservation project has seen 25 landowners, and the historic mission village of Elim, work together to conserve over 46 000 hectares of delicate wetlands in the region. Guided morning and afternoon nature drives allow travellers to discover this unique conservation area, where you can spot eland, buffalo, bontebok and hartebeest, while the deeper wetlands are home to thriving pods of hippopotamus. Twitcher? The Nuwejaars wetlands are home to more than 200 species, including rare Southern black korhaan and Secretary bird.

8.  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

9.  Watch whales in Hermanus

Watch whales in Hermanus

Hermanus is one of the most popular tourist towns in the Western Cape's Overberg region, as famous for its seafront restaurants and clifftop walk as the annual visitors that flock here each winter. Whale watching is what brings the crowds, as Southern Right whales arrive to mate and calve from June through to November. You can spot them from the clifftop paths or join a boat tour and spend a day getting up close to these mighty marine mammals. Kayak tours offer another thrilling opportunity to see whales – and sometimes dolphins and seals – from the water.

10.  Goudkop Bush Camp

Goudkop Bush Camp

This low-key wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town, close to the famous beaches of Elands Bay. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, and look for kudu, eland and zebra and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

conservation

Our vision is to play a key role in global cheetah conservation to ensure the survival and sustainability of the species in the wild.

The Inverdoorn Cheetah Conservation programme is based at the Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve – two and a half hours drive from Cape Town. The project was founded in 2001 and have since become a core function within Inverdoorn’s Big 5 safari tourism operation – allowing guest interaction with the animals throughout the safari experience.

safari park cape town

Inverdoorn is an upmarket Big 5 safari reserve in the Tankwa Karoo – near Sutherland. The lodge sits on a the vast expanse of 10 000 hectare flat Karoo veld. The reserve has built a solid tourism reputation locally and internally and the original cheetah rehabilitation programme has become synonymous with its business model.

The programme was originally positioned to rehabilitate and connect with cheetahs. Since inception, the programme released seven cheetahs – two of which have been released onto the main Inverdoorn game reserve. Their independent living unfortunately made them kill considerable amounts of wildlife indiscriminately. These individuals died at Inverdoorn due to old age.

Since August 2018, The Aquila Collection has taken over the ownership of Inverdoorn Private game Reserve with very little background information on the programme, together with little facts of the success of these cheetahs. Searl Derman, owner of The Aquila Collection – immediately announced an investigation into the programme – together with NO animal interaction policy updates, effective immediately.

Heather Richardson is an award-winning travel writer, based in South Africa. She is interested in conservation stories, emerging destinations and adventure travel.

Combining a visit to Cape Town and a safari is easier than you might think, with several game reserves just a short drive from the Mother City. Many of these offer the opportunity to see the Big Five: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards. To help you plan your trip, we’ve picked some of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town.

Alluring Stillness Amid Raw Beauty And Boundless Plains

Uncover the story behind sanbona.

Immerse yourself in a landscape where wildlife and flora leave you truly captivated and transformed. Sanbona is one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned nature reserves, stretching across 62 000 hectares of rich protected ecosystems within two biodiversity hotspots. This vast track of land in the Little Karoo outside Montagu, a mere 3.5 hours drive from Cape Town along Route 62, is owned by a non-profit company focused on steering conservation to the forefront of the safari experience. Sanbona offers an authentic and contrasting natural space, striving to create a balance where critically important ecosystems, endangered wildlife and flora can prosper for the benefit of future generations. As a private game reserve in the Western Cape, Sanbona offers four different accommodation options, each with their own distinctive style and appeal. Spend the day exploring every corner of this immense reserve, endless open plains and sculpted Cape fold mountains adorned with San rock art, the endemic flora and some of South Africa’s most sought-after wildlife.

Get close to those beautiful wild animals and experience an unforgettable encounter with elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and many more African wildlife. So a safari near Cape Town is not only convenient, but also a relatively affordable alternative.

The good news is that there are quite a few Safari options in the rest of the country. You can find game lodges and nature parks only a few hours away from the most popular destination – Cape Town. Sanbona - Safaris near Cape Town

Top 10 safaris near Cape Town

Kruger National Park may be South Africa’s safari poster child but its lodges and surrounding private reserves can sometimes be a bit of a hassle to get to from Cape Town – plus they all require malaria precautions. The good news is that there are plenty of other options for safaris near Cape Town, all easily accessible and in malaria-free regions. Some can be reached by car in a couple of hours, others are a short flight away – but all rival Kruger in their beauty and diversity.

Sanbona Dwyka Tented Camp and Explorer Camp

If you are looking for a great Big Five safari near Cape Town, the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Little Karoo, along Route 62, is the place to go. It’s one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned game reserves and at the Sanbona Dwyka Tented Camp , you’ll find nine secluded tents set in a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine and embraced by striking rock formations – a nod to the Khoi-San hunter-gatherers who once roamed this land. It’s an impressive setting, with five-star facilities to match – think outdoor showers, private decks with Jacuzzi and spa treatments. Then there are the activities, which include rock art excursions, boat safaris, stargazing, and of course game drives. Adventurous souls may also want to try the Sanbona Explorer Camp – the more basic, seasonal camp operates from October to April and offers guests an authentic walking experience that is as close to nature as you can get.

safari park cape town

Bushmans Kloof

Located in the northern Cederberg Mountains , the serenely beautiful Bushmans Kloof is another beautiful option for a safari near Cape Town. A visit to one of its 130 Bushman rock art sites dating back an impressive 10,000 years is a must during your stay, as is a nature drive through this South African Natural Heritage site, which boasts an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna. Returning to the lodge you’ll be spoiled to the hilts with spa treatments, decadent afternoon teas and gourmet cuisine – Bushmans is in fact renowned for its rather magical outdoor dining experiences. If you want to impress your other half (or better yet, are ready to pop the all-important question), make sure to book a romantic private dinner at the secluded Kadoro cottage.

safari park cape town

Grootbos Forest Lodge

Forest Lodge is one of three accommodation options at the tranquil Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, overlooking the wide sweep of Walker Bay. Wind your way through an ancient Milkwood forest to get to one of 16 stand-alone brick-and-timber suites where the views are second to none. Whether you lounge in bed, take a bath, or refresh in the outdoor shower on your private deck, the ocean is omnipresent. It might not be the place for Big Five wildlife-watching, but the lodge offers a host of fabulous activities, including coastal and marine safaris, botanical 4×4 tours, horse riding and whale watching. In the evening, a world of flavour awaits in the restaurant with ingredients fresh from the onsite organic farm.

safari park cape town

Morukuru Beach Lodge

Hermanus may be South Africa’s most famous whale-watching spot, but it’s worth venturing further to the new and very off-the-grid Morukuru Beach Lodge in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. De Hoop is remote in the very best sense of the word; there are only a handful of luxury lodges, integrated perfectly into an isolated landscape marked by blindingly white sand dunes and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. Visit between July and October and you’ll be able to see the migrating Southern Right whales putting on a bit of a show without even having to leave the lodge. Morukuru doesn’t offer a safari in the traditional sense but the whales, nature drives and other activities including sand boarding, marine walks and beach picnics more than hold their own, as do the five enormous suites, boasting a contemporary design with wow factor and awe-inspiring sea or dune views.

safari park cape town

Further afield

The above camps are all fantastic options to drive out to from the Mother City but if you’re willing to travel just a little bit further, you’ll find your options expand tenfold! The below camps are all within short flying distance from Cape Town or can be built into a Garden Route road trip.

Eagles Crag Lodge - Safaris near Cape Town

Shamwari Eagles Crag

Eastern Cape

Eagles Crag , one of seven lodges that form part of the Shamwari Game Reserve , is another of the easily accessible safaris near Cape Town. Nine glass and stone suites and a large main area are tucked away into a deep ravine, with uninterrupted views of the surrounding rock faces and soaring eagles. Twice-daily Big Five game drives, guided walks and the opportunity to see the region’s aloe and acacia plants are all part and parcel of a stay here. You can also delve into the area’s wildlife conservation thanks to various facilities at the reserve, including the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries. For the ultimate relaxation, the spa awaits with various treatments, a hydro bath, sauna and steam bath.

safari park cape town

Gorah Elephant Camp

Set within a 5,000-acre private concession in the Eastern Cape’s Addo Elephant National Park (make it part of your Garden Route itinerary or fly to Port Elizabeth), Gorah epitomises old-world glamour. Home to the densest population of elephants on the planet, you can watch the majestic mammals whilst sipping tea on the veranda of the stately manor house. If you do feel like venturing out to see the likes of lion, rhino and buffalo (as well as more elephant of course), hop on a game drive, walking safari or even a horse ride. Back at the lodge, the 11 tented suites will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the 1900s thanks to the sparkling crystal glasses, polished silver and white linen dotted around. And it’s all brought up to date with modern amenities – including the best showers we’ve ever had on safari!

safari park cape town

Gondwana Kwena Lodge

Garden Route

As far as safaris near Cape Town are concerned, Gondwana is a great family-friendly option. Kwena Lodge  is one of four accommodation options (the others including a tented eco camp and several private villas). A modern twist on the traditional Khoi-San dwelling, the 14 dome-shaped suites feature 180-degree views, amazing skylights for stargazing and clay pot fireplaces. The infinity pool at the main lodge makes for a refreshing dip and families will be kept entertained on enjoy thrilling game drives. Afterwards, Mum and Dad can head to the spa whilst the little ones are being entertained with the excellent Junior Rangers program. In the evening, everyone converges for a traditional braai at the boma.

safari park cape town

Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge

Located in the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve , Great Fish River Lodge is a great way to end a Garden Route trip . The lodge itself is classic yet contemporary and set along the lush green banks of the river after which it is named. The nine suites let nature flow in thanks to glass doors, outdoor showers and expansive viewing decks with private plunge pools. It’s still worth heading out into the wilderness though as game drives will surely reveal most members of the Big Five – and there’s options of walking safaris and (at an additional cost) tracking and darting expeditions with Rhino Conservation. Back at the lodge, recount the day’s experiences while feasting on African dishes in the boma under a starlit sky.

safari park cape town

Tswalu Tarkuni Lodge

Tswalu Kalahari

Thanks to direct flights from Cape Town, a quick safari sojourn to the Tswalu Kalahari private game reserve is now entirely possible – and very worth the trip. A “green” desert, the huge reserve offers semi-arid grassland with open savannahs that are rich in a remarkable range of habitats and apart from big game (including the desert-adapted black rhino) you can also expect to see small mammals such as meerkat, aardvark and pangolin. As for accommodation, choose Tarkuni if you’re travelling in a group or en famille. The exclusive-use lodge offers the ultimate private bush experience with a mere five suites that come with a dedicated chef, private game viewing vehicle, guide and tracker. At the super-chic, designer den Motse Lodge , rooms can be booked individually, and there’s a beautiful sleep-out deck too, The Malori, if you fancy something special.

safari park cape town

Samara Karoo Lodge

Encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Samara Karoo Lodge is a lovingly renovated farmhouse in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo that combines colonial comforts and modern-day luxuries with a rustic and welcoming feel. The nine plush rooms come in various styles and sizes – choose from Lodge Suites within the main Homestead, standalone Karoo Suites, or the Sibella Suites that overlook a waterhole. Antiques, family heirlooms and vintage books make you feel as if you’re staying with a good friend rather than at a lodge and the candlelit, alfresco dinners are perfectly romantic and generally lovely. Samara is renowned for its children programme, but there is plenty for the adults to enjoy, including game drives, walking safaris, wilderness picnics and cheetah tracking – and a Milky Way Star Bed for a dreamy sleep-out experience.

Cape Town Safari: The best Big 5 game reserves near the city (on a budget)

Cape Town is South Africa's most popular travel destination, renowned for its beauty. But, can you do a Big 5 safari in Cape Town and where are the best Cape Town safaris?

There are no Big 5 game reserves in Cape Town City or the greater Cape Town area. So, you can't go on a Big 5 safari in Cape Town itself. But, wait...

Luckily, you can see the Big 5 near Cape Town and experience a genuine wildlife safari  close to  Cape Town, even on a tight budget.

Here's where you can see the Big 5 near Cape Town and where to go for the best Cape Town safaris (close to, but not in Cape Town).

Best Cape Town Safaris: Private Big 5 Game Reserves

Four of the best game reserves for Big 5 Cape Town safaris (near the city) are Aquila Game Reserve, Inverdoorn Game Reserve, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and Mont Eco Private Game Reserve.

These Big 5 safari destinations are all under 3 hours drive from Cape Town.

They are in the Western Cape, close to Cape Town, which makes them malaria-free safari destinations - perfect for young families travelling with children.

Rhinos at Inverdoorn Game Reserve, near Cape Town

Aquila, Inverdoorn, Sanbona, and Mont Eco Game Reserve are not the only safari options in the Western Cape. They are, however, the best for well-priced Big 5 safaris near Cape Town. Other affordable Big 5 safari destinations, such as Gondwana Game Reserve, are slightly further away, on the Garden Route of South Africa.

3.  Mont Eco Private Game Reserve  - slightly further from Cape Town, larger than Aquila, smaller than Inverdoorn, more upmarket and ideal for eco-safaris.

4.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve  - furthest from Cape Town, the biggest (by far), more exclusive, and slightly cheaper than Mont Eco.

How much does a big 5 safari from cape town to aquila game reserve cost*.

Aquila Game Reserve, Cape Town

Aquila Game Reserve Safari Reviews

Aquila Game Reserve has a 3.5-star rating on Tripadvisor based on over 965 reviews.

Even though Aquila is lauded for its excellent service and sustainability (social responsibility, wildlife conservation, and energy efficiency) some visitors rate it poorly. Many visitors who rate Aquila poorly say the game reserve is too much like a zoo. It is important to note that this is a relatively small game reserve.

If you expect the quintessential rolling grasslands of Serengeti or Masai Mara when you visit Aquila Game Reserve, you are set for disappointment.

The game reserve is ideal for first-time safari-goers, travellers with limited time, and budget travellers who want to see African animals in the bush, instead of in zoo cages.

Cape Town safari - Inverdoorn cheetahs

2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn is an excellent Big 5 safari option for two reasons: the proximity of the game reserve to Cape Town and its relatively large size. The 2.5-to-3-hour drive from Cape Town makes Inverdoorn Game Reserve easily accessible for an overnight safari or weekend getaway.

View our affordable  Inverdoorn Game Reserve Safaris

Safari activities at Inverdoorn Game Reserve include morning and afternoon 4x4 game drives, guided bush walks with giraffes (depending on conditions), visits to the Cheetah Rescue and  Rehabilitation Centre (no animal interactions allowed), and stargazing in the Klein Karoo.

For families with young children, Inverdoorn offers babysitting services and welcomes guests with kids at their 4-star lodges. Children over the age of 4 years are allowed on game drives.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve is not open to day visitors and self-drive safaris are not permitted. This limits your options somewhat but it also makes the safari experience in Inverdoorn more exclusive and crowd-free.

For this reason, Inverdoorn does not offer the cheapest Cape Town safaris, but the quality of your Big 5 safari experience in Inverdoorn Game Reserve is worth the little extra spend.

The Cape Town Safari Experience

Cape Town is in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean along the western shoreline and the Indian Ocean to the east. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean and the region is home to the unique fynbos biome which boasts incredible biodiversity found nowhere else in the world.

Whilst spectacular in its own right, the Cape Peninsula is very different from the typical African savannah that your average lion inhabits. The Western Cape of South Africa is better known for its rich marine life and fynbos. This coastal region (in and around Cape Town) is a global hotspot for viewing the  Marine Big 5 animals  (whale, shark, seal, penguin, and dolphin) in the wild. The Western Cape is also home to over 500 species of birds, including 42 of South Africa's 53 endemic bird species.

That said, you now know where the best Big 5 game reserves in the Western Cape, not far from Cape Town, are to be found.

If you are staying in the vibrant city of Cape Town, you might be far away from some of the main wildlife reserves like Kruger National Park, but it doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on safari experiences. During your trip to Cape Town , within a short drive, you can find a wide range of private game reserves, like Aquila Games Reserve and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. The Big 5 (elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and African buffalos) are the creme de la creme of the South African safari world, and you can encounter these amazing animals in a conservation setting. So, with that in mind, let’s dive in and discover the seven best safaris near Cape Town.

1. Aquila Private Game Reserve

This 10,000-hectare reserve is known for its conservation efforts and excellent customer service. Aquila holds nothing back when it comes to its guests. There are three, half-day safaris available every day — early morning, afternoon, sunset, and options for full day tours and overnight packages. Sightings of the Big 5 are possible here, along with giraffes, hippos, antelope, and 170 bird species. Aquila’s main goal is to preserve and protect African wildlife. They have an on-site animal rescue center as well as leopard research facilities.

  • Distance from Cape Town : 2 hours (176km) northeast of Cape Town in the historic town of Touws River. This is a great option for those looking for a day trip only.
  • Accommodation available: 4-star lodge offers standard rooms, family suites, and luxury cottages that include their very own fireplace. A restaurant, spa, infinity pool, wet bar, cigar lounge, and children’s entertainment center are also included.
  • Other activities: Horseback safari, quad bike safari, fly-in safari (arrive at the reserve via helicopter!)

2. Garden Route Game Lodge

Visitors on safari at Garden Route Game Lodge enjoy sighting of a lion and a lioness.

This reserve offers two safari tours daily, each lasting roughly 2–3 hours. One departs in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon since these are the times the animals are the most active. On the tour, you are likely to spot four out of the Big 5; lions, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos. You can also see giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, and free-roaming cheetahs. Overnight guests are offered sunrise and sunset safaris along with a tour of the reptile center, which houses 28 different snake species, Nile crocodiles, and tortoises.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 40 minutes (350km) east of Cape Town in the village of Albertinia. It is possible to do it as a day trip from Cape Town, but staying the night is probably more comfortable.
  • Accommodation available: Room options in the 3-star lodge range from standard rooms to family and luxury suites to honeymoon chalets. A full restaurant with terrace dining is on site.
  • Other activities: Families traveling with kids will love the 'Kids on Safari' option, which allows children to explore and learn about the reserve under the guidance and supervision of a field ranger. Bird fanatics will enjoy watching over 50 species of rare and native birds throughout the reserve. There is also a spa and pool at the lodge that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day of safari.

3. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

As a self-proclaimed “luxury” safari, Inverdoorn may not be the cheapest on the list, but it’s certainly one of the most catered and comfortable. The reserve sits on 10,000 hectares in the arid Klein Karoo region. The grounds teem with birds and wildlife, including the Big 5, giraffes, zebras, hippos, impalas, springboks, and more. Inversdoorn is one of the most popular safaris near Cape Town due to the high level of service provided by the staff and its proximity to the city.

Inverdoorn goes to great lengths to protect and preserve the animals that call their reserve home. RhinoProtect, a pricey security and research program specifically designed for the reserve’s resident rhinos, goes above and beyond to keep the animals safe from poachers. The Cheetah Sanctuary is another highlight. Visitors can view the fastest animals on earth partaking in running exercises that ready them for their release into their natural environment on the reserve.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours 30 minutes (200km) northeast of Cape Town in Breede River.
  • Accommodation available: The 3-star Izibi Safari Lodge has stylish guest houses, up-scale chalets, and posh suites. Relaxation is the name of the game here, and it features first-class culinary dining and poolside lounging.
  • Other activities: 2-day one-night safaris, private safaris, sunrise/sunset safaris, walk with giraffes, cheetah encounters, cheetah runs.

4. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona is the biggest reserve on the list, with 58,000 sprawling hectares. Situated at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the impressive landscape and some unique and rare wildlife are what sets Sanbona apart from the others. Another unique selling point is the ancient rock art that can be viewed in the reserve. Dating back 3,500 years, the fascinating drawings depict the rituals and spiritual beliefs of the ancient tribes, the San and the Khoi-Khoi.

Safaris take place at sunrise and sunset and last for roughly 3 hours. Visitors can experience multiple landscapes and habitats as well as the chance to see the Big 5, iconic white lions, cheetahs, and rare riverine rabbits. Sanbona also offers boat safaris, creating a new and innovative way to tour the reserve.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 15 minutes (256km) east of Cape Town in the town of Montagu. The establishment doesn't entertain day trips due to the sheer size of the reserve. Hence, spending the night is mandatory.
  • Accommodation available: Environmentally-friendly 5-star accommodation in the form of luxury tented lodges with private spa baths. Or book an entire manor complete with a private bar, pool, and bathrooms.
  • Other activities: Birdwatching, walking and hiking trails, rock art tours, and one of the best stargazing in South Africa. For those traveling with children, there’s a kids program that caters to little ones’ interests while educating them on the importance of conservation.

Guests at Sanbona experience wildlife at the reserve watching a giraffe.

5. Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

Claiming to be the closest Big 5 safari to Cape Town, this reserve does a lot of business with day-tripping tourists. While it’s true the Big 5 do call this reserve home, even the reserve admits that spotting a leopard is a rare occurrence. Located at the foot of the Brandwacht Mountains, surrounded by vegetation, fauna, and flora, Fairy Glen is rugged, natural, and full of wildlife. You will feel days away from the big city even though the reserve is roughly an hour away from Cape Town.

This game reserve in the Western Cape offers half-day safaris (with or without transportation from Cape Town) as well as overnight safari options. The tours can be conducted by vehicle or on horseback. A nature walk to the Brandwacht Dam is included in the overnight safaris, and there is a chance to see 250 bird species.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 1 hour 20 minutes (113km) from Cape Town in the town of Worchester. This is the closest day-trip option on our list.
  • Accommodation available: Overnight safari guests have the option to stay in either the standard or luxury chalets. Bar and Braai (BBQ) facilities and an outdoor pool are included with the accommodation.
  • Other activities: Hiking trails.

6. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

A spectacular overview of the Forest Lodge at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

This 2,500-hectare private nature reserve is an award-winning eco-tourism destination near Cape Town in South Africa. Overlooking the pristine beaches of Walker Bay, this reserve has 118 species of birds and 29 mammal species as well as ancient forests that are home to rare and endangered plants. The reserve is especially known for its marine safaris during which you can spot whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins. The Grootbos Foundation is dedicated to conserving the local wilderness and has pioneered sustainability initiatives in the region.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours (160km). 13km past Stanford on the R43.
  • Accommodation options: Two lodges have private suites with private decks, fireplaces and outdoor showers. You can opt to stay in a private luxury villa as well.
  • Other activities: Marine safaris, birdwatching, hiking trails, horseback riding, whale watching and botanical tours.

A beautiful boma set for delicious culinary delights at Grootbos Garden.

7. Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Buffelsfontein, a former cattle ranch, reopened in 2002 as a 1,600-hectare game reserve. Buffelsfontein is home to four of the Big 5: lions, buffaloes, white rhinos and giraffes. Travelers can also see cheetahs, zebras, kudus, elands and oryxes in the reserve. Game drives take place twice a day and must be booked in advance. Travelers can go for either a three-hour game drive or one that lasts for 90 minutes. Overnight accommodation is available in bush camps, chalets and a guesthouse. The reserve also has a restaurant and a bar.

  • Distance from Cape Town: 1 hour (80km)
  • Accommodation Options:  A wide variety of accommodation options, ranging from bush camps and basic chalets to luxury cottages and guesthouse rooms, are available for travelers.
  • Other activities:  Bike tours and bush camping

Before deciding on which safari near Cape Town to embark upon, consider your priorities. If you’re traveling with children, there are a few reserves that are more family-friendly than others. If traveling in comfort is a must, there are luxury options overflowing with South African hospitality. Or if it’s all about which animals you’re going to see, be it the Big 5 or a rare encounter with the White lion, there are safaris near Cape Town that can practically guarantee that you will spot these. Whichever safari you choose, we doubt you’ll be disappointed!

4 South African Safari Destinations You Can Get to from Cape Town

Aquila Private Game Reserve

With the launch of United Airlines’ new direct flight to Cape Town from Newark this December, getting to South Africa’s seaside city is becoming significantly less arduous. Previously, a trip to Cape Town usually involved a layover in Johannesburg , which meant travelers to South Africa would often split their time between Cape Town in the southwest and a safari in the Kruger National Park in the northeast. But just because you can now fly straight to Cape Town doesn’t mean you have to pick between a safari experience and a waterfront one. Travelers who are tight on time and vacation days can find great game-watching near Cape Town , where a number of wildlife and nature reserves offer excellent excursions. Bonus: they’re all malaria-free.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve , about 3.5 hours from Cape Town, is one of the only reserves in the world where free-roaming white lions can be spotted in the wild, alongside cheetahs, elephants, and zebras. Located in the arid Little Karoo at the base of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the 143,000-acre reserve has four lodges to choose from (we recommend Dwyka Tented Lodge , a chic tented camp set in a rock amphitheater). With so much open space and so few lodges, Sanbona is the perfect place to disconnect.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve Dwyka

Aquila Private Game Reserve

If time is short, Aquila Private Game Reserve , a quick two-hour drive inland from Cape Town, offers visitors half- or full-day safaris. For a better chance of seeing the Big Five (that's lions, leopards, rhinos , elephants, and Cape buffalos), checking in overnight at the unfussy thatched Aquila Lodge is recommended. Visitors can also spend time with rehabilitated animals at the Animal Rescue Centre on the reserve.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

At Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, about two hours south along the coast, you won’t see lions or cheetahs. Instead, you’ll be immersed in flora and marine life. Located on 6,200 acres of flawless wilderness that runs along the coast towards Gansbaai, you'll want to spend a day or two here, as opposed to the quick Aquila trip. Guests staying at the reserve’s modern Forest Lodge can spot over 800 types of plant species (like proteas and other fynbos that can be found nowhere else on earth), as well as antelope and whales calving in the nearby bay (whale season is usually from June to November).

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

While Gondwana Private Game Reserve might be further afield (around four hours away from Cape Town), the picturesque drive along the coastal Garden Route is certainly part of the journey. Once there, guests can check into Kwena Lodge , a collection of modern huts, or the solar-powered tented camp , where you can glamp among the fynbos. Safari drives to see the Big Five are a highlight, but other fun activities on offer include mountain biking and hiking.

I've Been a Travel Writer for Years and This South African Safari Lodge Is the Nicest Place I've Ever Stayed

Get a peek inside Cheetah Plains, one of the world’s most incredible safari hotels

Food and Drink

Activities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Cheetah Plains

Rustling from the nearby brush disrupts our final dinner: a traditional South African braai or barbecue. The table is bathed in candlelight and overflowing with an impressive spread of local foods, a fitting sendoff to a fantastic few days on safari at Cheetah Plains .

I think little of the noise from beyond, as the resort is nestled in the wilds of the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, so a little animal activity in the bushveld isn't surprising. But a moment later, a fully grown hyena bursts onto the outdoor boma of the Karula Villa. She has somehow managed to circumvent the electric fence, lured by the tempting wafts of our now especially memorable meal. Frankly, the interloper is more alarmed to see us than we are to see her, and she quickly scoots away, tailed by the attentive and experienced staff, determined to make sure she won't make a return visit.

Our braai concludes without additional disruption and with a special bonus. As a nostalgic dessert sendoff, the culinary team surprises us with s'mores. The attentive game drive staff must have shared our sundowner conversation from earlier when we sipped Amarula (a South African cream liqueur) and mentioned how s'mores would be a fun addition to tonight's sendoff meal.

That attention to detail and focus on guest satisfaction perfectly sums up a day at Cheetah Plains. This property is distinct from other luxe safari offerings, with its trio of private-use villas designed for up to eight guests. Each is equipped with an entire staff for every possible need. Think a sommelier, animal tracker, driver, masseuse, porter, butler, culinary team, and beyond.

Tamsyn Fricker, a Travel + Leisure A-List Top Advisor and Director of Travel Artistry Africa , adds, “Three things help set Cheetah Plains apart from other wonderful luxury experiences in the area: exclusivity, flexibility, and sustainability.” The separate villas allow for private experiences; each villa has its own private game-drive vehicle. In terms of flexibility, the personal villa experience is really about being able to pick and choose your own adventure. The nature of the resort is that everything is bespoke and tailored to you for the ultimate flexibility based on guest preferences. On the sustainability side, “They do move the needle in southern Africa in terms of being carbon negative and with the silent safaris in electric vehicles; they’ve made it a really important part of who they are.”

All this to say, this is the single nicest place I’ve ever stayed in six-plus years of full-time travel writing. Here is my review of Cheetah Plains, South Africa’s loveliest safari resort experience.

Cheetah Plains

  • They use all-electric vehicles. As part of a massive sustainability initiative, Cheetah Plains is carbon-negative.
  • It’s very family-friendly. Think custom child-approved activities, complimentary babysitting, and chef-inspired kids cuisine.
  • All the art on the property is by African artists. The famed Goodman Gallery curated the art in the villas.
  • You can see hippos from your room. Mapogo Villa is set on an active watering hole.
  • It’s design forward. Cheetah Plains boasts unexpectedly clean, modern architecture distinct from a typical safari lodge.

safari park cape town

Cheetah Plains is notably contemporary, a departure from the archetypal lodge look of many safari offerings. Designed by Cape Town-based architecture and interiors firm ARRCC , the property is modernist in feel, embracing raw, natural materials.

“The architecture aspect is powerful and meant to be an unashamedly contemporary take on safari. It lets art and nature really shine. These villas are more about beautiful, crisp, clean design that brings nature in. It’s different from your typical safari lodge,” says Fricker.

It’s also about luxury, with massive soaking tubs overlooking the bushveld, monogrammed pillowcases, automatic blinds, and mosquito nets surrounding the plush bed. The layout of public shared spaces like the kitchen and living room in a central hub, then four private bedroom suites offers the perfect backdrop for a relaxing and indulgent trip. Each villa has a large private pool, an expansive pool deck, and an indoor media room ideal for a cozy movie night. With a boma or patio-like space, there’s room to enjoy the outdoors, too.

Additionally, the three villas (Mapogo, Karula, and Mvula) each have their own sense of personality. Mapogo is a stand-out, with the water feature (watering hole) as the star of the show. “There’s a soothing and powerful sense at Mapogo,” adds Fricker, fitting for its naming inspiration of a coalition of lions. Karula, named for the famed female leopard that roamed this section of the Sabi Sand, means peace. “The sense there is more feminine, with peaceful energy there,” she explains. Mvula, inspired by a former dominant male leopard in the region,  is the yin to Karula’s yang. Fricker shares, “Mvula has more masculine energy, and it’s in the trees with the pool almost hugged by foliage.”

The food and beverage program is unmatched, as the staff tailors meals to each client's preferred schedule and tastes. This approach is such a perk of the private villa model. For especially notable offerings, expect an impressive breakfast spread in the bush, multiple snacks and sundowners (happy hours), and outdoor dinner in the South African braai style.

On my visit, I noticed that the team would prepare my coffee order each morning before the 5 a.m. game drive; true luxury is little touches like this. My other most memorable dining experience was a wine-pairing dinner in the cellar. I truly loved the talented sommelier, Mariska, who hails from the Cape Winelands region. She did a lovely job explaining the South African wine world and choosing inventive pairings for our chef-driven, multi-course dinner. And, of course, we enjoyed some chenin blanc, the most planted grape in the country. The massive wine cellar is stocked with all South African wines, which I also really enjoyed.

The main activity at Cheetah Plains is game drives. Due to the private villa model, each group has access to their own private electric vehicle with a guide and a driver. (The guide team consists of all area locals, too.) It’s customary to do an early morning game drive and an afternoon one, but the team can build the itinerary based on guest preferences. Another great safari-focused activity is a bush walk or a walking safari, a way to see things closer to the ground and enjoy a new perspective.

In terms of art experiences in the bush, Cheetah Plains has partnered with Goodman Gallery to outfit each villa with the work of both established and rising African artists. Visitors can meet with a gallery expert for an art tour of their villa. The property has also just opened a standalone gallery, too. For a sparklier option, there’s even a diamond safari , a custom jewelry offering that is truly incredible. In case you forgot to consult our Ultimate Safari Packing Guide , pop into the property’s boutique, Shari’s , expertly curated by (and named after) Shari van Niekerk. The shop stocks custom items and local contemporary pieces, from scarves that serve as the perfect cherry on top of your safari look, to bespoke jewelry. This upscale spot is a prime stop for souvenir shopping, too. (I was able to scoop up a couple of adorable animal-themed books for my toddler son, as well as a pair of the cutest bush baby stuffed animals.)

An in-room masseuse is available regularly and will bring a table to your suite; facials are also popular. But that’s not all. “I had a client that wanted body scrubs, not something they typically offer, but they made it happen,” says Fricker. Plus, true to the sense of place, Cheetah Plains uses Africology products, a local, eco-friendly, natural, botanical-forward company.

Cheetah Plains is super family-friendly, with inter-connected suites so families can be close but have their own rooms.  Due to the exclusive use villa model, there is no mandatory age for children. Plus, since each bespoke itinerary is designed with the guest in mind, the staff can build custom programming based on the children's ages on the trip.

Kids can get into the kitchen with the chefs to cook and bake, do walking safaris with an animal tracker, go fishing, or enjoy a movie night in the media room, among countless other options. A daily children's hamper, delivered each night, includes pillow treats and safari activities. Perhaps most impressive is the complimentary nanny offered during a stay at Cheetah Plains.

While rooms are not ADA-compliant, Cheetah Plains makes every effort to welcome and accommodate guests with mobility limitations or special needs, including those who travel with a wheelchair. “The villas are by nature easier to navigate as they are primarily one-level, and the doors are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair,” explains Fricker.

Known as South Africa’s crown jewel, Cheetah Plains sits within the sprawling 160,000 acres of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park. Fricker of Travel Artistry Africa adds, “The resort is tucked in the northeastern corner of the Sabi Sand , which is world renowned for leopard sightings, big predator movement, and the rest of the Big Five. It’s a true heavy hitter in terms of game viewing — you go to see as much as you can possibly see.” Guests can access Cheetah Plains via charter flights from Johannesburg Airport to the Arathusa Airfield .

As an all-inclusive, ultra-luxe stay, Cheetah Plains isn’t exactly a cost-saving choice for a safari getaway. But, if you fill your villa with a max of eight guests, the nightly rate is lowered significantly compared to six guests in the space. For slight savings, consider seasonality, that is, traveling off-peak season.

“The best value time frames are March 1 through May 31, Sept. 1 through Dec. 10, and Jan. 11 through Feb. 28,” Fricker says. “Cheetah Plains is one of the most inclusive rates you can ever come across in the bush, with an extensive and deep wine menu. It even includes spa treatments.”

There is a slight price difference between the rate leader Mapogo Villa compared to Karula and Amvula, which are a bit cheaper. Rates start at $2,200 per person per day, all-inclusive, based on six adults with a minimum three-night stay and $1,550 per additional guest or $770 per child 12 years of age and under.

Overall, Fricker says, “Cheetah Plains’ has a desire to spotlight the excellence coming out of Africa, as there’s incredible creativity happening there.” From its innovative African-only art gallery to its all-local guide team to its focus on South African wines, Cheetah Plains is the best of the best for a luxurious safari that truly embraces its location.

Ceylon Tea Trails, the hotel that led to Resplendent Ceylon

Entrepreneur Malik Fernando likes to begin interviews by calling himself an accidental hotelier. He was originally the “mah” in Dilmah tea, the Sri Lankan brand that’s one of the biggest tea purveyors in the world.

When his father, Merrill, founded the company in the 1980s, he named it for Malik and his brother, Dilhan. Malik always knew he would be involved in the tea business, and indeed he was and still is. The tourism thing was inadvertent, but it stuck. Now he’s the managing director of Dilmah’s hospitality arm, called Resplendent Ceylon —and one of the main architects of luxury tourism in Sri Lanka.

“I first connected with leisure when I was looking after the tea plantations for Dilmah,” he recalls, speaking of his oversight trips to the country’s magnificent central highlands. “For me, that really was the highlight in terms of the whole, how it makes you feel and the climate and all of that.”

He continues, “To be honest, I knew nothing about the topic, except I knew what it was like to have a lovely experience at properties around the world. So it was a bit of a segue.” In 2001, a ceasefire in Sri Lanka’s civil war opened the door to tourism. People all over the world knew of the Sri Lankan highlands because of Dilmah—at least those who opened the leaflet in the tea package and saw the letter from Merrill.

Some of those tea fans asked to visit. Malik began setting up the historic plantation managers’ houses to receive informal visitors. When he began officially welcoming guests in 2005, he called the project Ceylon Tea Trails, using the old colonial name for Sri Lanka. At the time, the country had no promotional infrastructure, so his company made television commercials showing the beauty of the tea fields. “We were kind of the tourism board.” (He clarifies that Aman opened its Sri Lankan hotels around the same time.)

By the end of the civil war in 2009, “the product was quite well established from a culinary and service standpoint, and people were just bowled over,” he recalls. So he kept going with the hospitality. “My father was quite upset at the time, saying I was spending more time on the hotel when he wanted my brother and me to focus on tea.”

Thankfully, he didn’t listen. “As we got more and more accolades for Tea Trails, I thought, Look, why don't we create a circuit around the country?” he remembers. “People were saying that wherever they went next was a disappointment.”

A house at Ceylon Tea Trails

Besides, he thought, the Dilmah plantations and the hills around the mountain town of Hatton offered “only a glimpse of our beautiful island,” which even today he likens to the Bali of 20 or 30 years ago. That was the beginning of Resplendent Ceylon, a collection of five hotels around the island, three of which have been invited to join Relais & Châteaux. (The other two are part of a “more accessible” collection of beach house hotels.)

He takes pains to clarify that Resplendent Ceylon, for all the poetry contained in that name, is a “non-brand.” They want each hotel to be separate, with its own identity, but most of their guests visit the three pure-luxury hotels as a circuit.

What connects them? Thoughtful small touches, cuisine and a sense of place, says Fernando. “We try to bring in a very non-corporate sort of a family touch, where you are at home. And then something really special is the fact that Sri Lankans are very, very hospitable and their smiles are genuine. It's not a cold forced smile. They genuinely are happy to receive guests.”

Ceylon Tea Trails

Cream tea at Ceylon Tea Trails

“We broke the mold,” says Fernando of Ceylon Tea Trails , which became the first Relais & Châteaux hotel in the country. “There’s nothing like it anywhere in the world, and we’re still a pioneer.”

It’s not a traditional hotel but a collection of five restored colonial-era bungalows, built between 1888 and 1925 and each with about five guest rooms and suites, making 27 accommodations in all. They’re heavily British, decorated with plump leather couches, tartan fabrics, billiards rooms, croquet on the lawns and port wine in the decanters. Each bungalow has a team of butlers and chefs—all meals and snacks are included—and guests are encouraged to pop over to the other houses for cream tea in the afternoon.

A bedroom at Ceylon Tea Trails

Every stay includes a tour of the historic tea factory, which is notable mostly for the enthusiasm of the gentleman leading it and the pleasantly vintage machines. They can call in naturalist guides for hikes or bike rides among the tea bushes—complete with a tiffin lunch in a watchman’s outlook—or spa therapists for massages.

Each house has a swimming pool in the gardens. But the biggest selling points are the panoramic views over the mist-shrouded mountains, lakes and winding roads of the highlands (some 4,000 feet above sea level) and the utter silence of the place. There are no televisions in the bedrooms, of course, and a note kindly asks all guests to use headphones with their entertainment devices at all times.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge

A cocoon at Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Fernando says that when they were beginning work on Wild Coast Tented Lodge , the designers asked for Resplendent Ceylon’s corporate guidance. “We were a little hotel company, and we didn't have a template,” he recalls. “I said, we don't have any brand standards. Let's see what you can do.”

They also didn’t have a hotel designer, not really, as the team they hired was “sort of a collective of designers,” now called Nomadic Resorts , who didn’t have hotel experience at the time. “We just came through trial and error, came through various concepts, until we ended up with a cocoon as it is now,” he says, referring to the 36 freestanding, canvas-walled accommodations that debuted in 2017. “So Wild Coast has really been a hit. It’s the only lodge I know that's right on the beach” and at the edge of Yala National Park.

Each cocoon is nearly 600 square feet, with high ceilings, teak floors, a four-poster king bed, a copper slipper bathtub and a judicious amount of colonial expedition swag (leather trunks, campaign chairs) mixed with contemporary design innovations. Some have private plunge pools, while others are clustered around watering holes designed to attract a variety of birds and amphibians.

The dining room at Wild Coast Tented Lodge

They’re designed to be completely removable, the kind of structures that would leave no footprint, and they incorporate some smart sustainability measures. Devices collect the condensation runoff from the air-conditioners and use it as foot-washing water.

Beyond that, it’s a classic safari lodge, with a schedule of morning and afternoon game drives in the national park, pool time in the afternoon, workshops and lectures, more cream tea, sundowners on the beach and periodic barbecue nights in the large, architecturally striking restaurant. That bamboo dining pavilion is the setting for some excellent food, a mixture of Sri Lankan rotis and curries, international fare and today’s de rigueur healthful fare.

While the game viewing conditions in the crowded national park are less than ideal, Fernando and other luxury hoteliers in the area are working on improving their corner of things. They’re developing a private conservancy for low-density walking safaris and tours in electric vehicles to give guests a better look at Sri Lankan elephants, leopards and sloth bears.

Cape Weligama

Of all of Resplendent Ceylon’s hotels, Cape Weligama is the closest to the traditional beach resort. It occupies a coconut estate on a promontory on the island’s southern coast. Fernando says it’s “right in the heart of things,” close to surf breaks, the UNESCO-recognized Galle Fort, resort towns, gorgeous lagoons, whale watching points and the increasingly international community in the nearby town of Mirissa, which, he says, is arguably the trendiest in Sri Lanka.

Cape Weligama is the sort of old-school resort that was designed to be navigated with (electric) golf carts. The 16 suites occupy apartment-style blocks around a family-friendly swimming pool, and another 23 freestanding villas are spread in eight gardens around the property. Every garden has a pool that’s shared by two or three villas. All the gardens and apartment blocks are named for “distinguished” writers and explorers whose “historic Ceylon journey captures the spirit of Cape Weligama.” Marco Polo, Pablo Neruda and Arthur C. Clarke are among them.

The restaurant at Cape Weligama

The resort has various viewing points, beaches, a big spa that uses organic spice scrubs made on site, a couple more shared pools (including a gorgeous moon-shaped crescent of water that stretches nearly 200 feet), a watersports center, a setup for movie nights and three distinct dining venues. The main restaurant is a stunning shade of purple.

“It really is kind of our flagship,” says Fernando. Perhaps that’s why, just ten years after it opened, they’re set to begin a complete refurbishment next month. This will upgrade that restaurant along with the bar and rooms before the 2025 season begins. But the idea of Cape won’t change: “very large quarters like your home, and then you use that to explore the local area.”

After all, that’s the joy of visiting Sri Lanka. As lovely as the Resplendent Ceylon resorts are, they aren’t sealed off from the world. “When you come to many other Indian Ocean islands, you’re in a bit of a bubble,” he says. “You’re having a Michelin meal and an amazing London-style wine list, but you are not connecting with the biodiversity and the people and the wilderness and the food as you do in Sri Lanka.”
