About the Niihau Boat Tour

Holoholo is Kauai’s largest and fastest catamaran. She is 65 feet long and wide enough to offer plenty of comfortable seating and space for you and your belongings. Designed for agility and passenger comfort, it will give you a fast, adventurous ride even at her top speeds. You’ll get to the fun faster for sure!

Built for your safety and comfort, Holoholo has two entry points for snorkelers, a shaded cabin with a large bar area, and two forward nets for sunbathing and relaxing. Licensed to carry 65 passengers, we never take more than 49, so you’ll have plenty of room to sightsee, snorkel, relax, and enjoy.

Holo Holo Charters isn’t the only Kauai company that offers Niihau boat tours, but we were the first! When our company was founded in 1997, boat tours to Niihau were to be our niche—nobody else was doing it. But a unique tour would require a unique boat and that’s why Holoholo has always stood out on the dock.

Anyone with an appreciation for boat design will tell you, Holo’s got “nice lines.” At 65’ long, 24’ wide, and with twin Cummins QSB diesel engines, Holoholo is Kauai’s most spacious and fastest cruising catamaran. Her long, skinny hulls and low center of gravity mean she cuts through the water with speed and stability. Over the years, Holoholo has been scrupulously maintained, frequently updated, and remains the best-looking, most comfortable, and safest tour vessel on all of Kauai. We’ll kickstart the journey with coffee, tea, juices, and a continental breakfast (eggs, fruit, pastries, and oatmeal) as we cruise out of Port Allen in the sunrise. Your captain will share stories, local history, and legends as we pass Kauai’s west side and get into the world-famous Napali Coast. What you’ve heard is true– Napali is like music for the eyes, and she will absolutely blow your mind with her dramatic cliffs, emerald valleys, cascading waterfalls, vibrant rainbows, spinner dolphins, turtles, and, depending on the time of year, humpback whales. Make sure your phone is fully charged because you might break your camera!

When we’ve reached the northern edge of Napali and we’re all feeling humbled and amazed by nature’s glory, it’s time to start the next phase of the adventure! It’s time to rip across Kaulakahi Channel to the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau and her neighbor to the north, Lehua Crater. Luckily Holoholo cruises comfortably at around 27mph so crossing the channel should take less than an hour.

We’ll poke around these two remote islands, talk some story about Niihau’s fascinating past and present, notice Lehua’s thousands of nesting seabirds, check out her unique geological formation “Keyhole Cave” and then, we’ll find a great spot to stop, snorkel and lunch.

One thing about Niihau and Lehua is that they’re very dry. The lack of rain or running water around these islands (in addition to the lack of any significant commercial activity) makes for water that’s exceptionally clear; visibility is commonly 70 feet or more! Niihau/Lehua is considered one of Hawaii’s very best snorkeling destinations and for that reason, we get a lot of repeat customers (including Kauai locals) on this Niihau snorkeling tour.

Seasoned divers and beginning snorkelers alike will be impressed with the underwater lava formations, bright colorful fish species, monk seals, manta rays, and more. Of course, we have all of the gear you need—masks, snorkels, fins, flotation devices—and we’ll show you how to use it. We’ll have trained crew members in the water with you, on a surfboard, keeping a close eye out for anyone that’s struggling or drifting too far off from the group. Your safety is our #1 concern, from the time we leave the dock until we return.

And hey, if snorkeling isn’t your thing, just kick back and relax. Shoot the breeze, read a book, get some sun, take a nap. Whatever makes you happy. Whatever…. floats your boat?

When we’re all snorkeled out and every single person is safely back on board, it’s lunchtime and we’ll serve up some freshly made lunch provided by our amazing caterers who specialize in creative, local flavors. This is also the time of day (5:00 somewhere?) that we can offer our customers 21+ years old a refreshing adult beverage. We’ve got a nice selection of beers, wines, and seltzers, and the bar’s open all the way back to Port Allen!

When we arrive back, you should feel relaxed, sun-kissed, and satisfied. Your captain selects a snorkel spot at the “Forbidden Island” of Niihau, and we provide all the snorkel gear and offer assistance and instruction so you can fully enjoy your time in the water. "The 35’ Deluxe Catamaran “Cadillac of the Caves” was AMAZING! Do not miss this when you’re in Kauai. Brian and Capt. Nate were fun, kind, knowledgeable, patient…all the things. They personally made sure every single person was comfortable and having fun the whole time. They shared tons of knowledge about Kauai and the Napali coast, played music, made us laugh, and were obviously capable and at ease on the ocean. The deluxe catamaran was big enough to be comfortable, but small enough to fit in caves and be an exciting ride. My husband and 7 year old sat in bench seats in the middle of the boat, while my 10 year old and I rode up front for a more exciting ride. We stopped to snorkel and they provided good equipment. They also put out snacks and drinks while we were in the water. They made sure everyone had enough time in the water and didn’t feel rushed back. Our family all took Dramamine the night before and again about an hour before we got on the boat, and we all felt fine the whole time. Do take similar precautions if you’re at all worried about sea sickness. I cannot recommend this company and experience highly enough. It was one of my favorite days ever! It was the experience of a lifetime to take in the gorgeous scenery in such a fun and exciting way. The experience and memories are worth the price. Book it!

Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

Price: Adults from $210; kids from $190 Duration: 3.5 hours

If a sunset sail is at the top of your Hawaii to-do list, consider this cruise. Aboard the company's 65-foot catamaran, you'll be treated to views of a sunset, rocky cliffs, sea caves and local sea life while gliding along the Napali Coast . Cruises are limited to 49 passengers. The tour also includes a hot dinner, as well as mai tais, beer and wine. Tourgoers describe the crew as exceptional and say the views are fabulous. Reviews for the food are more mixed, with many describing the dishes as average. Several travelers also warn of choppy waters and advise taking motion sickness medication ahead of your cruise.

Tours generally depart daily from Port Allen in the late afternoon, but departure times vary by season. Children younger than 5 are not allowed on the cruise. Holo Holo Charters also offers snorkeling cruises and a daylong tour that sails by neighboring island Niihau.

Calling all thrill-seekers! This catamaran tour departing from Hanalei Bay promises lots of adventure, jaw-dropping views and plenty of speed. As you travel along the coast, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, sea turtles, humpback whales (in winter), waterfalls and rainbows. Travelers rave about the stunning views and appreciate the captain and crew's knowledge of the island's history and wildlife. Reviewers also appreciate the ability to access multiple sea caves thanks to the boat's easy maneuverability. Though the boat affords up-close views of the coast, it doesn't protect against sea spray and is not equipped with a restroom, so keep that in mind when booking.

Tours typically depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (though offerings may vary by season). A maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. Amazing day!!! High seas closed part of Nā Pali coast at the last minute but these guys got up early and scouted out an alternate and probably even more amazing trip for us. We felt like old friends getting together the see a once in a lifetime event. Giant glassy waves, dolphins, a seal and a turtle, I’d give them 20 stars out of five if I could.
