Santa Cruz II | Galapagos Expedition Ship

Santa Cruz II

Santa Cruz II was introduced on 10 October 2015. The Santa Cruz II replaced its predecessor on October 10, 2015.

Santa Cruz II is a new vessel that offers better tours than ever before. It has five large desks, and a chic, stylish interior designed by Richard Nilsson. Our new vessel is based on a principle of elegant simplicity. It offers its passengers a luxury atmosphere from which to enjoy the breathtaking views of these enchanted Islands.

Santa Cruz II has three decks and 50 cabins. The cabin options include family, single and double. If you prefer something a little more luxurious, the Darwin Suites are available on the Panorama Deck of the ship. They offer deluxe accommodation at an extraordinary standard. The suites offer enhanced services, along with carefully selected features such as Galapagos coffee tables books and tablet loans for every cabin. The elegantly-designed communal areas or viewing platforms are the perfect place to relax when guests don't want to explore the treasures of the islands. There are indoor and outdoor eating areas, a library and lounge bar. Two hot tubs with ocean views overlook the pool.

The 90-guest Santa Cruz II expedition ship sails the Galapagos Islands and features first-class amenities, daily naturalist-led hikes and panga rides, snorkeling and a glass-bottom boat. A wide variety of cabins, many of them interconnected, and ample space on five decks make the Santa Cruz II a great option for Galapagos family cruises .

The Santa Cruz II operates one 9-day and two 7-day Galapagos cruise itineraries, the latter of which can be combined to create an 11-day cruise. Contact our Galapagos small ship cruise experts for the inside scoop on which route is best for you. AdventureSmith Explorations’ award-winning crew has personal experience sailing in the Galapagos Islands and can recommend the best options to suit your travel interests and timeline.

Santa Cruz II itineraries are designed by guides who are passionate about wildlife and have created the best combination of wildlife viewing per route. No matter which Santa Cruz II itinerary you choose, expect a tailored experience that prioritizes the best of what the Galapagos has to offer.

Daily activity levels are chosen by the guests aboard Santa Cruz II. Your cruise can be as active as you want it to be, with several levels of excursions offered each day and a highly organized crew to keep all passengers on board engaged and enjoying the Galapagos Islands. A 1-to-1.5 guest-to-crew ratio ensures that no one is ever left behind and that each individual finds the right activity level to experience the Galapagos Islands.

On the Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery (West) Galapagos Islands itinerary, visit Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina and Floreana islands. Floreana is one of the oldest islands in the Galapagos and is rich with marine life and human history. Also on this itinerary are the youngest volcanically active western islands of Isabela and Fernandina.

On the Nature and Wildlife Expedition Cruise (North Galapagos Islands itinerary), swim in the company of sea turtles and discover the impressive cliffs and natural rock formations like Elephant Rock and The Bishop on Santiago Island. Leave footprints along the beaches of Rabida island where sea lions, marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers and Darwin’s finches contrast with the iron-rich, red sandy shores. Spot playful dolphins on the way to Genovesa, a true birder’s island, where Prince Philip’s Steps lead to a rocky plateau and a colony of Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds and storm petrels. Enjoy time beneath the orchids and bromeliads on Santa Cruz Island in search for giant tortoises roaming in the wild.

On the In Darwin’s Footsteps (East) Galapagos Islands itinerary, highlights may include Mosquera Islet, a small volcanic uplift perfectly situated as a sea lion rookery; Punta Pitt, an eroded tuff cone and the only site where Nazca, blue-footed and red-footed boobies can be found together; Punta Suarez where the famous blowhole spouts and waved albatross nest; the perfectly white sandy beach of Gardner Bay; the Charles Darwin Research Station, headquarters for scientific investigation; and North Seymour Island, a small, flat island covered in silver grey palo santo trees that wait for rains so they can burst into bloom.

The Nine of The Best Isles (West+North) Galapagos Islands itinerary combines the two 7-day itineraries back-to-back for a seamless, comprehensive cruise with no repeated landing sites.

The Santa Cruz II offers active itineraries, with numerous options. Enjoy active as well as mellow hikes, options for Zodiac or glass-bottom boat rides, plus swimming and snorkeling for all levels. There is ample time to relax on board after meals or opt out of activities, but note that this is an expedition-cruise style itinerary, so you will be kept busy if you choose!

Nature & Wildlife Expedition Cruise Itinerary

The 7-day Nature and Wildlife Expedition Cruise begins with 2 pre-cruise days in mainland Ecuador before cruising round-trip from Baltra for 5 days. Visit Santa Cruz, Santiago, Rabida, Bartolome and Genovesa islands.

7-day Nature & Wildlife Expedition Cruise on Santa Cruz II operating round-trip from Baltra for 5 days cruising Santa Cruz, Santiago, Rabida, Bartolome and Genovesa islands.

The journey of discovery begins on the Equator in the lush Andean foothills. At 9,350 feet, Quito is the second-highest capital city in the world, and its main draw is the exquisite Old Town, which was founded on an ancient Inca settlement. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is packed with well-preserved Colonial architecture, including colorful plazas, magnificent churches and stately monuments. Settle into your hotel, then head out to explore.

JW Marriott Hotel Quito

Today, enjoy a guided tour of Quito’s remarkable Old Town, one of the largest and best-preserved colonial-era quarters in South America. Wander through cobblestone streets as you admire the architecture and sample delicious chocolate made from the finest Ecuadorian cacao along the way.

Next, you’ll head to the iconic Middle of the World City, located around 16 miles north of Quito. After lunch, you’ll visit the famous monument that delineates the imaginary line that is the Equator. Have your camera ready to capture the moment you stand with one foot in each hemisphere.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

After breakfast, take the short flight to Baltra Island, a part of the spectacular Galápagos Archipelago. Transfer straight to the port, where the comfortable expedition ship MS Santa Cruz II awaits. In the afternoon, land at Las Bachas beach, located on the northern shore of Santa Cruz Island. This glorious white-sand beach with turquoise waters is a great place to spot iconic Galápagos wildlife, such as flamingos and sea turtles. The beach’s name “baches” means “barges” and comes from the sunken barges left after World War II. Swim or snorkel here before heading back to the ship for a welcome cocktail and a briefing about the next day’s adventures.

  • Santa Cruz II

Today, explore Santiago Island’s pristine beaches and picturesque landscapes. Take in the impressive cliffs of Buccaneer Cove on the northwest coast, home to a large number of marine birds and sea lions. Immerse in the scenery through a range of water activities and marvel at fantastic rock formations such as Elephant Rock and The Bishop. In the afternoon, head to Puerto Egas, one of the best visitor sites on the island. Here, have the opportunity to see a colony of fur sea lions and exotic birdlife on an excursion Or, swim or snorkel along the rocky shorelines, typically in the company of marine turtles.

The day starts on tiny Rábida Island, located off the southern shore of Santiago Island. Take a thrilling panga-boat ride along the coast or join an excursion to explore the island’s mesmerizing, red-tinted sand beach. Soak up the sights and sounds of a sea lion colony and keep an eye out for marine iguanas, mockingbirds, yellow warblers and several species of Darwin’s finches.

In the afternoon, sail to the golden sands of Bartolomé Island, dominated by the imposing Pinnacle Rock. Swim or snorkel from the beach here or discover colorful marine life from the glass-bottom boat. Possibly even spot some Galápagos penguins on the shore. Hike up to the summit of the island for fantastic views.

Today explore Genovesa Island. The morning starts with a steep but short climb—only 90 feet—up a flight of stairs to reach a flat and rocky plateau. At the plateau, walk along comfortably and check out large colonies of Nazca Boobies, red-footed boobies, great frigatebirds and storm petrels. Afterward—or instead—hop into a kayak for an aquatic adventure! In the afternoon, land at the beautiful beach that fringes Darwin Bay for a swim. After this refreshing dip, take a stroll and observe hundreds of island birds. Alternatively, swim, snorkel, kayak, or just relax on the beach.

Start the last morning on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. After breakfast, all baggage will be taken to the airport while everyone visits the tortoise reserve. After a dry landing at a passenger’s wharf and a bus ride to the island’s higher region, behold the last highlight of the cruise: giant tortoises in the wild.

The windward slopes of the island are home to two species of giant tortoise. These lush highlands include dense forests of Galápagos daisies, orchids and bromeliads, and several endemic land birds. After this visit, transfer directly to the Baltra Airport. Farewell to Galápagos. Upon arrival in Guayaquil, a representative will assist with the international flight connection. Alternatively continue from Guayaquil to Quito to catch your international flight from there.

Two pre-cruise hotel nights in Quito with breakfast and dinner on Day 2; round-trip economy-class flights from Quito to Baltra and Baltra to Guayaquil; pre-cruise transfer from Quito hotel to Quito airport and transfers in the islands; full-day nature tour to Cotopaxi National Park, with lunch; Galapagos National Park entrance fee (US$ 100); TCT-Galapagos Transit Control Card (US $20); airport lounge access following return from the islands; ship accommodations; all meals on board ship, including house beer and wine, sodas and mineral water; tea and coffee; WiFi on board (limited connection, no streaming); reusable water bottle; English-speaking expedition guides; welcome and farewell cocktails; citizen science; onboard photography guide; activities noted in itinerary; all snorkeling gear and wetsuit on loan for duration of cruise; port fees and taxes, including airport taxes for flights between the mainland and the islands; possible fuel surcharge; laundry service (Darwin Suite guests only).

Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery Itinerary

The 7-day Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery cruise begins with 2 pre-cruise days in mainland Ecuador before cruising round-trip from Baltra for 5 days. Visit Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina and Floreana islands.

7-day Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery cruise on Santa Cruz II operating round-trip from Baltra for 5 days cruising Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina and Floreana islands.

After breakfast, take the short flight to Baltra Island, a part of the spectacular Galápagos Archipelago. Transfer straight to the port, where the comfortable expedition ship MS Santa Cruz II awaits. Begin the exploration of the Galápagos Islands in the afternoon. Trace the north shore of Santa Cruz toward the fascinating landscapes of Cerro Dragón (Dragon Hill), where the ship will stop for a visit. The first part of the walk here passes by a brackish water lagoon that is frequented by shorebirds and American flamingos. Further inland, the trail offers a beautiful view of the bay and the western islands of the archipelago, as well as the first chance to encounter some land iguanas.

The day starts at Punta Vicente Roca, on the northwestern tip of Isabela Island. After breakfast, explore the coast by dinghy as the naturalist guides teach about the area’s dramatic geology. This site is a nesting place for several bird species, so look out for flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins and boobies. Weather permitting, snorkel beside the cliffs where there may be green sea turtles, oceanic sun fish and even fur seals.

In the afternoon explore Fernandina, an island with a unique environment and a high density of marine iguanas. Scan the coast for sea lions, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hawks and penguins.

Today explore Santa Cruz Island. In the morning, disembark at Puerto Ayora to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. At this giant tortoise breeding center, you can see recently hatched tortoises and Darwin’s famous finches–the birds he used as a basis for his theory of evolution by natural selection. There’s also an impressive forest of prickly pear cacti that is home to many land birds. Enjoy a cooler climate over lunch in the lush highlands, where giant tortoises shuffle about munching on grass and wallowing in pools. You’ll also have time for another activity, including mountain biking or visiting a sugar plantation.

After breakfast, enjoy a panga ride among the channels on Floreana’s north shore before taking in the incredible views of the island from Baroness Cove. Later, land at Post Office Bay to visit the historic barrel that has served as a post office in the archipelago for over two centuries. After lunch, explore the underwater wonders around Champion Islet in a panga or glass-bottom boat. This is one of the best snorkeling spots in the archipelago.

From there, head to Cormorant Point to walk from an olivine-crystal beach to a brackish lagoon. Along the way, possibly spot American flamingos, pintail ducks and other birds.

As the expedition cruise comes to a close, it’s time to bid farewell to the amazing wildlife and scenery of one of the world’s most incredible nature destinations. Also say farewell to the wonderful crew and expedition team while disembarking at Baltra Island. Transfer to the airport and fly to Guayaquil. Upon arrival in Guayaquil, a representative will assist with the international flight connection. Alternatively continue from Guayaquil to Quito to catch your international flight from there.

The West Santa Cruz II Galapagos Cruise begins in Quito, Ecuador (UIO), and ends in either Guayaquil, Ecuador (GYE), or back in Quito. In Darwin's Footsteps Itinerary

The 9-day In Darwin’s Footsteps cruise begins with 2 pre-cruise days in mainland Ecuador before cruising round-trip from Baltra for 7 days. Visit Mosquera Islet, Osborn Islet, Eden Islet and the islands of Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, South Plaza, Espanola and North Seymour.

7-day In Darwin's Footsteps cruise on Santa Cruz II operating round-trip from Baltra for 7 days cruising Mosquera Islet, Osborn Islet, Eden Islet and the islands of Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, South Plaza, Espanola and North Seymour.

After breakfast, a short flight will take you to Baltra Island, a part of the spectacular Galápagos Archipelago. A transfer will take you straight to the port, where your comfortable expedition ship MS Santa Cruz II awaits you. Get your first glimpse of the islands’ incredible wildlife on Mosquera Islet, home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the archipelago. Take a small panga boat ashore for a closer look. As you stroll across the flat, sandy dunes, look out for blue-footed boobies and Sally Lightfoot crabs, and learn about the marine and terrestrial ecosystems from your naturalist guides.

Your first stop today is the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve, a breeding center for the endangered giant tortoise. It’s also home to other endemic species, including the San Cristóbal mockingbird and the lava lizard. The giant tortoise is probably the most iconic of all Galápagos wildlife, with a lifespan of over 100 years. They thrive here, ambling around forests similar to their natural habitat. Small panga boats will then take you to Punta Pitt, the only site in the Galápagos Islands where you might see three species of boobies. Enjoy a nature walk, explore the coastline by boat, or snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear water.

Start the day with a scenic nature walk on the blissful beaches of Santa Fe, home to the endemic Barrington land iguana and a colony of sea lions. You can swim or snorkel from small panga boats, take a kayak for a paddle around the island, or join a trip in the glass-bottomed boat to observe the marine life below. After a delicious lunch prepared by the onboard chefs, head to South Plaza Island. Keep an eye out for frigatebirds, swallow-tailed gulls and Galápagos shearwaters gliding on the breeze. Here, among a dazzling array of flora, land iguanas laze by the shore while marine iguanas slip in and out of the water.

Today, pay a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora. You’ll also have time for another activity, such as mountain biking or visiting a sugar plantation.

Your Galápagos Islands cruise reaches Española, the archipelago’s southernmost island. Birdlife here is truly extraordinary. On cruises from April through December, look for Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls and the mighty waved albatross. This is also a great chance to spot red Española lava lizards and marine iguanas, as well as see El Soplador, the famous blowhole that blasts water 75 feet into the air. After lunch on board the ship, head to the picturesque coral beach of Gardner Bay and nearby Osborn Islet to seek out sea lions, mockingbirds, and finches. If you’re feeling active, you can go snorkeling or kayaking.

The abundant wildlife-watching opportunities continue at Eden Islet, where we hope to see Galápagos green turtles, rays and friendly reef sharks. On shore, look for distinctive frigatebirds with their rubbery, red throats. You can swim or snorkel to explore the reefs. You can also see the reefs from the glass-bottomed boat or by kayak. After lunch, sail to North Seymour. The island is a great site for spotting colonies of blue-footed boobies and swallow-tailed gulls. Sea lions and marine iguanas also congregate here, attracted by the bountiful sea life in its waters.

As the expedition cruise comes to a close, it’s time to bid farewell to the bounteous wildlife and amazing scenery of one of the world’s most incredible nature destinations. It’s also time to say farewell to the wonderful crew and expedition team while disembarking at Baltra Island. Transfer to the airport for the flight to Guayaquil. Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

I am just so impressed with how much work you all put in to making these trips special. I was so used to doing it myself on line, etc. but now I won't. We could not have been happier!

The Galapagos is an extraordinary place. Santa Cruz II is a well appointed ship and the staff were dedicated to ensure that we had the best experience possible -- there was lots to do, but nothing felt beyond our grasp in terms of skill or energy required.

Always wanted to go to these places and it was our 40th anniversary! I am just so impressed with how much work you all put in to making these trips special. I was so used to doing it myself on line, etc. but now I won't. We could not have been happier! In Galapagos we loved everything about our ship the Santa Cruz and will recommend it to others!

Accommodations Review

Guayaquil is a good stop over place and the hotel we stayed at was nice...Oro Verde - but I don't think I would spend more than one night there. All of our hotels were excellent. I would suggest staying two nights at least in Quito because you need a rest day.

Meals Review

The meals on board the Santa Cruz, our Galapagos ship, were especially good. Everything was so fresh with healthy options.

Crew & Guides Review

The whole experience on the Santa Cruz was amazing. Dennis our naturalist was fabulous and the crew was so much fun and helpful. On the ship we were with a great group and enjoyed everyone.

Transportation Review

Everyone was always on time - if not early. We are spoiled forever with boarding passes etc all done for us!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Aaron's planning was so good. All of my questions and concerns were answered so efficiently and in a timely manner. He did the best job. I have and will keep recommending him to others taking trips and will be back for our next adventure.

Traveler Advice

Just to make sure you have a few nights at least in the major cities so you are not always just flying in and out...we needed some "down" time but did find it nice on the Santa Cruz where all of our luggage was in one place for a while!

Featured in this Traveler Review

The ship was perfect, very comfortable. We were able to use the many common areas without overcrowding and even sometimes some privacy! That was amazing.

The food was delicious and there was lots of variety. So much food though...it was a little intimidating, but this isn't a complaint. We just aren't used to that volume.

Itinerary Review

The absolute best experiences were viewing the landscapes and the wildlife on the island or on the water from panga boats or IN the water snorkeling. The science talks were excellent and the naturalists were stellar. The trip to the market and to Cotopaxi with our guide Fatima (Metropolitan Tours) was excellent. Lunch at the Hacienda at San Agustin del Callo was delicious, and included a surprise...feeding carrots to llamas who were herded into the courtyard at the end of lunch.

Make sure your mobility and motivation, both on and off the ship matches the activities and itinerary. The staff helped everyone with mobility issues and provided alternate activities for non-walkers and non-swimmers, but the stairs on the ship are steep and multi-floor navigation is an hourly experience.

ALL of the staff was excellent. Estaban, the Expedition Leader provided pleasant and consistent briefings and clear instructions. He was insightful, thoughtful, helpful and present. He definitely set the tone for his staff and all activities, and the timing ran like a Swiss watch. The naturalists were all exceptional: Erika, Carmalita, Gustave, Jonathan, Alex and all of the others. Lionel (cinco veces!), Eduardo, Michael and the others demonstrated expert skill and confidence in maneuvering the panga boats so we could see the sites. These folks should not be underestimated. They know what they are doing and they are a key ingredient in the experience. Chef, sous chef cooks and servers made meals a real pleasure with good humor and expert skill. Special shout out to our server, Javier with generous patience as I practiced my Spanish. The ship crew was both present and invisible, seamlessly making the voyage and housekeeping changeovers happen. We were fortunate enough to have a very pleasant and memorable conversation about politics in Canada and Ecuador with the Ship Purser and the Hotel Manager (the gentlemen on the Santa Cruz II video) on our last evening. It was so kind of them to share their thoughts with us.

Fellow Passengers Review

Our fellow travelers were respectful, enthusiastic, cooperative and very positive about sharing their experiences seeing the creatures in the wild. We are a quiet couple, so sometimes the inner monologue voiced out loud by some of the patrons could be a bit much. We recognize that not everyone can handle silence in nature, unfortunately, so we just tried to remember that they were excited about their trip.

The timely communication was key :) This was our first cruise and our first experience with far flung travel to South America. Everything that needed to happen--happened. Thank you!

As these young islands were cooling off some two million years later, certain species gradually began to arrive to the archipelago. It is speculated that these newcomers arrived in the Galapagos on large rafts of vegetation that broke off from the shores of Central and South America. Upon arriving in the archipelago, these species had to rapidly adapt to a radically new environment.

Santa Cruz II

santa cruz 2 galapagos cruise

The luxury M/V Santa Cruz II has 50 cabins for 90 guests across five spacious decks, indeed it has one of the highest guest to space ratios in the islands. With gorgeous chic interiors from the distinguished ship designer, Richard Nilsson, this stylish ship has it all: restaurant, indoor and outdoor social areas, hot tubs, a gym, entertainment room … the list is endless.

Life On Board

Picture yourself taking in the beauty of the Galapagos as you sunbathe on Sky Deck or unwind in one of the twin hot tubs on board. Happy Hour anyone? Make your way to the stunning outdoor terrace and adjacent bar & lounge on Panorama Deck. If you’re not there enjoying freshly barbequed snacks, there’s always the Beagle Restaurant to treat your tastebuds to exquisite international and Ecuadorian cuisine from the Cordon Bleu-trained Gastronomy Director.

Fitness your thing? There’s a gym for you. A little bored? Head to the Discovery Room for entertainment. In need of quiet time? The Expedition Deck’s namesake lounge, with its refreshment station and library, is a fantastic chillout zone with spectacular views. Feeling ill? Reassuringly there is an onboard infirmary with resident Medical Officer on call 24/7.

Flexible & Exclusive Excursions

With her 8 expert naturalist guides (including an Expedition Leader to help coordinate activities), her on-shore excursions truly stand out from others, as on overage you will only have 11 guests per guide, much lower than the typical 16 guests per guide you see on other vessels, and with more groups, excursions can also be more tailored to the language, interests, abilities and age of guests, meaning a more intimate and rewarding learning experience for all.

What’s more, 99% of the visitor sites you explore won’t be shared with any other vessel, so you will be able to discover the islands much the same way Darwin himself did, with no other boats in sight. The ship has all the facilities you’d expect for aquatic activities like kayaks, masks, fins and snorkels (wetsuits are available for hire), but additionally guests have the great option to use the glass-bottom boat, ideal if you are tired or not too fond of snorkeling.

Family Favorite

The vessel is rightly popular with families, and not just because of the tailored excursions or numerous interconnectable and dedicated family cabins on board. The Santa Cruz II offers a “Pirates Aboard” kit with multiple activities for younger children as well as snorkeling lessons and panga rides designed for young adventurers. Parents and kids alike will appreciate the kid-sized meals served on a kids’ friendly schedule.

Whether you are a family, large group, couple or a solo traveler, with a variety of cabin options to choose from – there are single, double and family cabins available, many of which can be interconnected – the flexible and fun Santa Cruz II is a remarkable vessel with an excellent crew committed to making your Galapagos experience extraordinary.

Itineraries & Prices

7 Day - Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery - Western

itinerary map

Arrive in the city of eternal spring

Your journey of discovery begins on the equator in the lush Andean foothills. At 9,350 ft, Quito is the second-highest capital city in the world, and its main draw is the exquisite Old Town, which was founded on an ancient Inca settlement. This UNESCO World Heritage site is packed with well-preserved colonial architecture, including colorful plazas, magnificent churches, and stately monuments.

If you have time in the evening, make sure to visit Calle La Ronda, an ancient pedestrian street with links to poets and other artists who have lived here. It’s full of shops and café and there also plenty of handicrafts for sale.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western - Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery

Get a taste for Ecuador

Today, you visit Cotopaxi National Park, home to one of South America's most active volcanoes. Along the way, you will stop at the photogenic Sangolquí open-air market, where you can browse the colorful stalls and unique handicrafts, and sample different local specialties.

Afterwards, we walk to Limpiopungo Lagoon, tucked at 12,800 ft in a high valley within Cotopaxi National Park. Spot herds of llamas on the slopes and keep your eyes open for birds such as the Andean gull, several species of hummingbird and (with some luck) the majestic Andean Condor. Enjoy a tasty lunch prepared by some of the region’s best chefs before returning to your hotel in the late afternoon.

Embarkation

AM: After breakfast, a short flight will take you to Baltra Island in the spectacular Galápagos archipelago. A transfer brings you straight to the port, where your comfortable expedition ship MS Santa Cruz II will be waiting.

PM: We begin our exploration of the Galápagos Islands in the afternoon. We will trace the north shore of Santa Cruz toward the fascinating landscapes of Cerro Dragón (‘Dragon Hill’), where we’ll land. The first part of the walk here passes by a brackish water lagoon that is frequented by shorebirds and American flamingos. Further inland, the trail offers a beautiful view of the bay and the western islands of the archipelago, as well as your first chance to encounter some land iguanas.

Explore the Coast

AM: Your day starts at Punta Vicente Roca, on the north-western tip of Isabela Island. After breakfast, we’ll explore the coast by dinghy and our naturalist guides will teach us about the area’s dramatic geology.

This site is a nesting place for several bird species, so look out for flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, and boobies. Weather permitting, you can snorkel beside the cliffs, where you might find green sea turtles, oceanic sunfish, and even fur seals.

PM: In the afternoon, we’ll explore Fernandina, an island with a unique environment and a high density of marine iguanas. Scan the coast for sea lions, Sally lightfoot crabs, hawks, and penguins.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western - Iconic Wildlife & Sublime Scenery

Meet the famous giant tortoises

AM: Today, you’ll explore Santa Cruz Island. In the morning, we disembark at Puerto Ayora to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.

The Station includes a giant tortoise breeding center and an impressive forest of prickly-pear cacti that’s home to an array of land birds. It also serves as the headquarters for the island’s scientific investigation, conservation, and the National Park administration. After the visit, we head up to the cooler highlands of Santa Cruz Island for lunch.

PM: You can choose from several options in the afternoon, which you will decide with your Expedition Leader. At the end of the afternoon activities, you will return to Puerto Ayora and rejoin MS Santa Cruz II.

In the afternoon, we’ll land at Las Bachas beach located on the northern shore of Santa Cruz Island. This glorious white beach with turquoise waters is a great first place to spot iconic Galápagos wildlife like flamingos and sea turtles, and it’s named after some sunken barges left after WWII. Enjoy some swimming or snorkeling before heading back to the ship for a welcome cocktail and an expedition briefing about the following day.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Northern - Nature & Wildlife

Once there, you can walk along comfortably and check out large colonies of Nazca Boobies, Red-footed Boobies, Great Frigatebirds and Storm Petrels. Afterwards or instead, hop into a kayak for some aquatic adventuring!

PM: In the afternoon, we’ll land at the beautiful beach that fringes Darwin Bay for a swim. Following this refreshing dip, take a stroll and observe hundreds of island birds, or alternatively just take it easy on the beach, swimming, snorkelling or kayaking.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Northern - Nature & Wildlife

AM: We start our last morning on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. After breakfast, your luggage will be taken to the airport while you visit the Tortoise Reserve. A dry landing at a passenger’s wharf and a bus ride to the loftier region of the island will provide the last highlight of the cruise: giant tortoises in the wild.

The windward slopes of the island are home to two species of giant tortoise. These lush highlands include dense forests of Galápagos daisies, orchids and bromeliads, and several endemic land birds. After this visit, transfer directly to Baltra Airport.

9 Day - In Darwin’s Footsteps - Eastern

itinerary map

Your voyage of discovery begins in Quito, a city which straddles the equator and where it feels like spring is eternally in the air. Beautifully situated in a high valley, at 9,350 ft this is the second highest capital city in the world, and the views of the nearby mountains remind you at all times of your Andean location.

Quito was founded on an ancient Inca settlement, and today it’s a bustling and modern place. But you don’t need to look too far beneath the contemporary façade to find the past, and the Old Town is a showcase of classical Spanish architecture. In fact, the city’s diligent preservation of its history caused it to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1978.

If you have enough time in the evening, make sure you visit the Calle La Ronda, an ancient pedestrianized street with links to poets and artists who have lived here. It’s full of shops and cafes, and there are many handicrafts available for sale here.

Take a look at the sparkling city lights that spread up the surrounding hills and mountains at night – truly a mesmerizing sight!

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

Cotopaxi Volcano trip

Today you’ll get up close and personal with one of Ecuador’s natural wonders as we visit an active volcano and walk to a height of almost 12,800 ft.

But first, we’ll stop in on the photogenic Sangolqui open-air market, where you can sample different Andean specialities. The local indigenous people sell their produce here, and you‘ll see vibrantly-colored legumes, fruits and vegetables. Food aside, clothing and other handicrafts can be purchased here, and it’ll give you a chance to chat with the friendly stallholders.

Cotopaxi National Park, set amidst mountainous splendor, is only an hour-and-a-half’s drive from Quito. This mostly treeless landscape is characteristic of the Andean moorlands, or paramo, and you may see herds of llamas roaming wild here. Birdlife to look out for includes the Andean Gull, several species of Hummingbird and – with some luck – the majestic Condor. We’ll walk to Limpiopungo Lagoon, a beautiful lake that mirrors the dramatic surrounding peaks.

Meaning ‘Neck of the Moon’ in the local Quechua language, 19,393 ft-high Cotopaxi has an almost perfectly conical form and is one of the highest volcanos in the world. Its yawning crater measures 2,620 ft, and features one of the few equatorial glaciers anywhere. The first recorded eruption of Cotopaxi was in 1534, terrifying both locals and conquistadors alike, and the last major one occurred in 1904.

For lunch you‘ll be tasting delicious traditional dishes prepared by some of the region’s best chefs in San Augustin del Callo, and in the late afternoon we return to the hotel and enjoy a nice dinner before calling it a night.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

AM: Following breakfast, we’ll head to Quito Airport where our morning flight waits to take us across the blue Pacific Ocean to adventure. After only a couple of hours we’ll land at the Galápagos Ecological Airport on Baltra Island—which runs of renewable power and is said to be the world’s greenest airport!

After we’ve landed in the spectacular Galápagos archipelago, a transfer will take you straight to the port where your home-away-from-home for the next few days is docked—our comfortable expedition ship Santa Cruz II.

We’ll start our oceanic expedition with a short, mandatory safety briefing to ensure you’ll be safe sailing with us. You can chcheck-innd get settled before we meet for lunch in the beautiful restaurant, where the Captain will raise a toast and wish everyone an exciting adventure. Your cruise gets underway straight after lunch.

PM: Our first stop is only four nautical miles away, at the southern tip of Mosquera Islet. It’s a small piece of volcanic uplift that sits between the larger islands of Baltra and North Seymour. A long and narrow sand bank is surrounded by lava reefs, and this is home to one of the largest colonies of sea lions in the Galápagos.

Hop aboard a small expedition boat and head ashore, where you’ll see the sea lions basking in the sun. This will be your first glimpse of the amazing diversity and richness of these islands, and the islet is thronged with many seabirds, including Blue-footed Boobies, as well as Sally Lightfoot crabs.

The walk is easy, only a few hundred yards across flat and sandy dunes, and you’ll learn more about the fragile marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the Galápagos from your guides as we explore.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

Visiting the giants

AM: Today we‘ll dock in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the archipelago’s capital. It’s a 40-minute drive to Cerro Colorado, where you’ll get to visit a breeding centre for the highly endangered giant tortoise. It’s a Galápagos icon with a natural lifespan estimated at over 100 years.

The Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve is working to boost the numbers of these giant reptiles and bring them back from the brink. They live in conditions that are similar to their natural habitat and are able to thrive here. The tortoises amble around under the cover of a six-hectare forest, which is also home to dozens of other endemic species including the San Cristobal Mockingbird and the San Cristobal lava lizard.

PM: In the afternoon, our small expedition boats take you to Punta Pitt at the eastern tip of the island. This unusual point consists of an eroded volcanic cone, and there’s a trail here that provides spectacular views of the coastline. Punta Pitt is the only site in the Galápagos where you might see three species of boobies. The Blue-footed Boobie is easily recognised for its, well, blue feet!

Enjoy a nature walk on land, or explore the coast aboard one of our small expedition boats. Snorkeling and swimming is excellent in the clear water here, and you might see sea lions performing their underwater acrobatics over the reef, so remember to bring your swimsuit and some good walking shoes.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

Blissful beauty and evolving iguanas

AM: Straight after breakfast, we‘ll set foot on an idyllic white sand beach on the island of Santa Fe and go on a scenic nature walk. The island is home to a colony of sea lions, as well as the endemic Barrington land iguana, which can usually be spotted sitting among the giant prickly pear cacti or lounging on rocks in the sun.

The island has a blissful feeling about it, and we might relax by swimming or perhaps snorkeling from our small boats. If you want to get a peek at the under-water world, you could join a trip in our glass-bottomed boat. The kayaks are ready too, so why not discover this beautiful and wild island at your own pace.

PM: Following a nice, long lunch rustled up by our excellent onboard chefs we’ll head to our next destination, South Plaza Island. Going there, we‘ll pass through a channel where the turquoise waters are offset by the white sandy beaches, which in turn contrast sharply with the black lava rocks. Along the shore, we might spot Frigatebirds, Swallow-tailed gulls and Shearwaters, gliding on the breeze.

South Plaza Island is very small, but it hosts a stunning array of flora, in particular the flowering succulent sesuvium and dense patches of prickly pears. Land iguanas laze sleepily by the shore, while marine iguanas slip in and out of the water. If you’re lucky you might even spot a hybrid of the two, which are the result of intergeneric breeding between the two sub-species—evolution in action!

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

Giant tortoises & island activities

AM: This morning we’ll head ashore at Puerto Ayora, the largest town in the archipelago, situated on Santa Cruz Island. It’s here that we’ll drop in on the Charles Darwin Research Station, where over 200 scientists and volunteers are working to conserve the wildlife of the Galápagos.

Visit the breeding enclosures where you can see baby tortoises in incubators, and look upon Darwin’s famous finches with your own eyes—these are the birds he used as a basis for his theory of evolution.

After experiencing the Opuntia Cactus Forest we’ll enjoy lunch in the highlands. It’s an entirely different ecosystem from the coastal plains, with moist green foliage and a cooler climate. It’s also the place where the most giant tortoises roam. You’ll have the option of seeing these giants in their natural habitat. They are easy to spot, lumbering around, munching on grass and wallowing in pools.

PM: When lunch is over, instead of spotting tortoises you could choose from several different activities, that could include mountain biking or kayaking in Tortuga Bay. You could also hike the 1.3 miles to this beautiful bay, and stop at Playa Brava, a beautiful snow-white beach that’s a seasonal nesting site for green turtles.

On the same walk, Playa Mansa is a secluded natural mangrove cove, with clear and tranquil waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling or kayaking. Or you could simply enjoy the view from the shade of a mangrove!

Due to conservation measures, numbers are limited in Tortuga Bay, so be sure to coordinate with the Expedition Team.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

A conservation success story

AM: Said to be one of the oldest islands at four million years, Española is also the most southerly in the archipelago. A magnet for birders, almost the entire world population of Waved Albatrosses breeds here between March and January. Be on the lookout for Nazca Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, and Swallow-tailed Gulls, which are all present here.

Also keep your eyes peeled for the Española lava lizard, which has a strikingly red hue, as well as the highly colored marine iguanas which are a particular endemic subspecies only found here.

Speaking of wildlife, there was good news in 2020 when a rare tortoise was found to have sired over 900 children. Diego, who is over 100 years old, was on loan from San Diego Zoo, and may have almost singlehandedly saved his subspecies from extinction. Because of his remarkable efforts he now lives in retirement on Española with his extended family and is expected to live to around 150.

You’ll get to witness the famous blowhole El Soplador—meaning ‘the blower’—blast water 75 ft into the air. The effect is caused by waves crashing into a lava fissure at high tide and blowing the water out through a crevice. Afterwards, we’ll head back on board for another lovely and relaxed lunch.

PM: In the afternoon, the postcard-pretty coral beach of Gardner Bay and the nearby Osborn Islet provide beautiful settings for observing sea lions, Mockingbirds, and finches as you take your time to simply relax or go for a dip in the water for some excellent snorkeling. Kayaking activities are available here too.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

A small slice of Eden

AM: Eden Islet, off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, is a sliver of volcanic cone poking up through the sea. There’s an abundance of wildlife here, and in the clear, shallow waters we’ll hope to spot Galápagos green turtles, rays and some friendly reef sharks.

We’ll bring the snorkeling gear, so remember your swimsuit if you want to do some reef exploration. If weather permits, you can also take a trip aboard the glass-bottomed boat or paddle along the coast of Eden on a kayak. Look out for the Frigatebirds on shore with their characteristic rubbery red throats.

PM: Later, after a well-deserved spot of lunch aboard the ship, we’ll head over to the island of North Seymour. This small and mostly flat piece of land was created when a volcanic eruption lifted up the seabed, which is why it looks so smooth and eroded.

There’s a small forest of silver-grey Palo Santo trees—also known as Saint’s Wood—just above the landing site. These trees are typically leafless and remain dormant for half of the year, waiting for the rains as their cue to burst into bloom. The wood is famously used to make incense – see if you can detect the scent!

This is a great site to observe colonies of Blue-footed Boobies, Frigatebirds, and Swallow-tailed Gulls. Sea lions and marine iguanas also call North Seymour home, happy to feast on the sea life in the rich waters here. When a young Darwin first laid eyes upon marine iguanas, he described them as “clumsy lizards” and “hideous-looking”, but we beg to differ, and we’re sure you will too!

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Eastern - In Darwin’s Footsteps

AM: As your expedition cruise comes to a close, it’s time to bid farewell to the bounteous wildlife and amazing scenery of one of the world’s most incredible nature destinations. We’ll also say farewell to our wonderful crew and Expedition Team as we will disembark at Baltra Island.

A transfer will take you to the airport, where your waiting flight will bring you to Guayaquil.

11 Day - Nine of the Best Isles - Western & Northern

itinerary map

If you have enough time in the evening, make sure to visit the Calle La Ronda, an ancient pedestrianized street with links to the poets and artists who’ve lived here. It’s lined with shops and cafes, and there are many handicrafts available to buy.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Today you’ll visit Cotopaxi National Park, home to one of South America's most active volcanoes. But first, you’ll stop at the photogenic Sangolquí open-air market , where you can browse colorful stalls with unique handicrafts, and sample different local specialities.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

AM: After breakfast, a short flight will take you to Baltra Island in the spectacular Galápagos archipelago. A transfer brings you straight to the port where your comfortable expedition ship MS Santa Cruz II awaits.

PM: In the afternoon we’ll begin our exploration of the Galápagos Islands following the north shore of Santa Cruz towards the fascinating landscapes of Cerro Dragón—or Dragon Hill—where we’ll land. The first part of the walk here passes by a brackish water lagoon that’s frequented by shorebirds and American Flamingos. Further inland, the trail offers a beautiful view of the bay and the western islands of the archipelago, as well as a chance to get a first look at some land iguanas.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Explore the coast by dinghy

AM: You’ll start your day at Punta Vicente Roca, on the north-western tip of Isabela Island. After breakfast, we’ll explore the coast by dinghy, learning about the dramatic geology of the area from our naturalist guides.

This site is a nesting place for several bird species, so look out for flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, and boobies. Weather permitting, you’ll get to snorkel alongside the cliffs, where you might find green sea turtles, oceanic sunfish, and even fur seals.

PM: In the afternoon, we’ll explore Fernandina, an island with a unique environment and a high density of marine iguanas. Scan the coast for sea lions, Sally lightfoot crabs, hawks and penguins.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Meet the famous giant tortoises of Galápagos

AM: Today, you’ll explore Santa Cruz Island. In the morning, we’ll disembark at Puerto Ayora to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.

The Station consists of a giant tortoise breeding centre and an impressive forest of prickly-pear cacti that’s home to many land birds. It also serves as the headquarters for scientific investigation, conservation and the National Park administration. After the visit, we’ll head up to the cooler highlands of Santa Cruz Island for lunch.

PM: You’ll have several options to choose from in the afternoon, which you can decide on beforehand with your Expedition Leader. At the end of the afternoon’s activities, you’ll return to Puerto Ayora and re-join MS Santa Cruz II.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Discover a bit of Galápagos history and look out for some underwater wildlife

AM: After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a dinghy ride among the channels on Floreana’s north shore, before taking in the incredible views of the island from Baroness Cove. Later on, we’ll land at Post Office Bay to visit the historic barrel that has served as a post office in the archipelago for over two centuries.

PM: After lunch, you’ll explore the underwater wonders around Champion Islet in a dinghy or aboard a glass-bottom boat. Here, you can snorkel in one of the best spots in the archipelago.

From there, it’s onwards to Cormorant Point, where we’ll take a walk from an olivine-crystal beach to a brackish lagoon, where you can see American Flamingos, Pintail Ducks, and other birds.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Recharge your batteries and lounge on Las Bachas beach

AM: Relax on board while we anchor off Baltra Island. After four days of exploring the unique nature and environments of Galápagos, it is the moment to pause for a while and recharge your batteries for the days ahead. Make us of the many onboard facilities, flick through the books on the library or exercise in the gym—it’s up to you.

PM: In the afternoon, we’ll land at Las Bachas beach located on Santa Cruz Island. This glorious white beach with turquoise waters is a great place to spot iconic Galápagos wildlife like flamingos and sea turtles. Enjoy some swimming or snorkeling before heading back to the ship for an expedition briefing about the following day and dinner.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

Explore Santiago Island and see its wild residents and impressive rock formations

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

See some amazing wildlife and beautiful landscapes

AM: Your day starts on tiny Rábida Island, located off the southern shore of Santiago. You can go for a thrilling dinghy ride along the coast or join an excursion exploring the island’s mesmerizing, red-colored beach. Soak up the sights and sounds made by a colony of sea lions, and spot marine iguanas, mockingbirds, Yellow Warblers and several species of Darwin’s Finches.

PM: In the afternoon, we’ll sail to the golden sands of Bartolomé Island, dominated by the imposing Pinnacle Rock. You can swim or snorkel off the beach here or discover colorful marine life from our glass-bottom boat, and spot Galápagos Penguins on the shore. Hike up to the summit of the island for fantastic views

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

AM: Today you’ll explore Genovesa Island. The morning starts with a steep but short climb—only 90 ft—up a flight of steps to reach a flat and rocky plateau.

Following this refreshing dip, take a stroll and observe hundreds of island birds, or alternatively just take it easy on the beach, swimming, snorkeling or kayaking.

Santa Cruz II (HRTG) - Western & Northern - Nine of the Best Isles

AM: We start our last morning on the north shore of Santa Cruz Island. After breakfast, your luggage will be taken to the airport, while you visit the Tortoise Reserve.

After this visit we’ll transfer directly to Baltra Airport for your flight to Guayaquil and home.

6 Best Galapagos Cruises For Every Kind of Traveler

G alapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises in the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anyplace else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability and toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here's everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best itineraries to book now.

  • Best luxury Galapagos cruise

Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing

Best galapagos cruise for adventure seekers , best galapagos cruises for solo travelers , best small ship galapagos cruise , best galapagos cruises for families, when is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands .

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are six of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

There’s no more luxurious way to sail the Galapagos Islands than on  Silversea's Silver Origin , a ship custom-built for cruising these islands. Silver Origin is Silversea’s first destination-specific ship and includes several features meant to minimize its environmental impact. The all-suite ship can carry up to 100 passengers, is all-inclusive down to the premium spirits in your stateroom's minibar, and includes the luxury cruise line’s signature butler service. There’s also a salon and fitness center on board, a rarity for ships sailing in this region. Most itineraries on the Silver Origin are seven nights, but longer cruises are typically scheduled around winter holidays. The Silver Origin sails the north, central, and western loops of the Galapagos Islands.

This region may be better known for its landscapes and wildlife, but the Galapagos Islands are also an excellent place for stargazing. And there’s no better Galapagos cruise ship for stargazing than the  Celebrity Flora . The 100-passenger vessel feels more like a luxury yacht than an expedition ship. It has a stargazing platform on its top deck and provides binoculars to help guests spot constellations as the ship cruises along the equator. The modern expedition ship also offers a glamping experience that includes a naturalist-guided stargazing session and a luxurious night of glamping under the stars. Prefer to sleep in your bed on board? Have dinner under the stars at the ship’s restaurant before heading back to your suite. The Celebrity Flora ’s Galapagos itineraries range from seven to 16 nights.

Lindblad Expeditions has been cruising the Galapagos Islands for more than 50 years. It now sails to the Galapagos year-round in partnership with National Geographic, giving guests the chance to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and more. A staff of expert guides is on board to help travelers spot wildlife and better understand the volcanic landscapes, mangrove thickets, and seagrasses they encounter. Activities include unforgettable snorkeling adventures, hikes through pristine wilderness, and walks along remote beaches. Lindblad’s newest Galapagos Islands cruise ship, the National Geographic Islander II , feels more like a boutique hotel than an expedition ship and carries just 48 passengers in 26 suites. Some itineraries offer advanced divers the chance to commune with a variety of marine life. And while rugged adventures may await travelers off the ship, each suite offers travelers plenty of comfort: They come equipped with flat-screen TVs, in-room espresso machines, and bathrooms with double sinks.

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants on board either ship, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. On board both ships, you’ll find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and plunge pools.

For an adventure your kids will never forget, hop on board an Adventures by Disney cruise of the Galapagos Islands. Just be sure to wait until your kids are at least seven years old. This is the minimum age for most Galapagos cruises, though Disney recommends this itinerary for children eight and older. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s a small ship expedition itinerary with a hint of Disney magic in a setting fit for a fairy tale. Adventures by Disney's Galapagos itineraries span nine days and visit about 15 sites.

Captain sentenced to 4 years in boat fire that killed 34 off Ventura coast; families heartbroken

Family of some of the victims expressed heartbreak following the sentencing, saying their loved ones' lives was were worth more.

Leo Stallworth Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The captain of the dive boat Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz Island on Labor Day 2019, was sentenced Thursday to four years behind bars for gross negligence in the deaths of all 34 people on board.

Jerry Boylan, 70, was sentenced in downtown Los Angeles for the single charged count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer, a pre-Civil War law also known as seaman's manslaughter. The defense unsuccessfully argued for a five-year probationary sentence, with three years to be served under house arrest.

The fire is considered the worst maritime disaster in modern California history.

U.S. District Judge George H. Wu set a restitution hearing for July 11, at which time -- or shortly thereafter -- Boylan was ordered to surrender to begin his sentence.

Victims' families speak out

More than 15 family members, many in tears, spoke at the nearly four-hour, impassioned hearing in Los Angeles federal court, providing memories of children, spouses, brothers and sisters who perished in the fire. Boylan, his head down, never looked at the speakers.

When one father of a lost child asked the judge to order the defendant to look at him as he spoke, Wu declined.

Robert Kurtz, father of the sole deckhand killed, Alexandra Kurtz, brought a small container with him up to the lectern to address Boylan and the court.

"This is all I have of my daughter," he said.

Susana Solano, who lost three of her daughters and their father in the disaster, spoke of the agony and grief she has felt daily for nearly five years.

"The torture happens each and every day,'' she told the court. "I feel like a failure because I was unable to protect my children from harm.''

Yadira Alvarez is the mother of 16-year-old Berenice Felipe, who volunteered at an animal shelter and dreamed of becoming a marine biologist, and was the youngest of the 34 victims killed on the boat.

"He's not a victim. He is responsible for my daughter not being here," Alvarez said, while sobbing in court. "Can you imagine my pain?"

After the sentencing, family members of other victims spoke outside of the court house, expressing their heartbreak at what they described as an inadequate sentence.

"We're very relieved that this is finally over, but we really felt like our son's life, and those of the others, was certainly worth more than...48 months," said Kathleen McIlvain, family member of one of the victims, Charles McIlvain. "Our lives are changed forever, and I don't really know how we can go forward, but we'll give it a shot for Charlie."

McIlvain and Marybeth Guiney, both Santa Monica residents, were diving enthusiasts who lived in the same condominium complex.

Thirty-three passengers and a crew member died, trapped in a bunkroom below deck. Among the dead were the deckhand, who had landed her dream job; an environmental scientist who conducted research in Antarctica; a globe-trotting couple; a Singaporean data scientist; and a family of three sisters, their father and his wife.

The charge of seaman's manslaughter carries a maximum guidelines range sentence of 10 years in prison, but Wu said he could not find legal precedent for such a penalty in Boylan's case. The judge said he took into consideration such mitigating factors as Boylan's age, health issues, lack of criminal intent or prior convictions in fashioning the four-year term.

Family members spoke of Boylan's apparent lack of remorse, but the judge said the defendant had filed a video expressing great contrition.

In a brief statement read aloud by his attorney, Boylan said, "It was my goal to bring everyone home safely -- and I failed.''

Along with the prison term, Wu ordered the defendant to serve three years of supervised release after his release, with the condition that he participate in mental health treatment.

The jury returned its guilty verdict on Nov. 6 at the end of the first day of deliberations.

Boylan's failure to organize required roving night patrols of the 75-foot vessel allowed the fire to spread unimpeded, killing victims whose ages ranged from 16 to the 60s.

Defense attorneys blamed the ship's owner, Glen Fritzler, for not insisting on roving night patrols or fire training for his fleet's captains and crews.

Boylan was the first to abandon ship and jump overboard. Four crew members also survived by jumping into the ocean in the predawn hours of Sept. 2, 2019.

Evidence showed Boylan failed to use firefighting equipment, including a fire ax and fire extinguisher that were next to him in the wheelhouse, to fight the fire or attempt to rescue trapped passengers.

Meanwhile, 33 passengers and one crew member were still alive and trapped below deck in the vessel's bunk room and in need of assistance to escape, prosecutors said.

The captain failed "to perform any lifesaving or firefighting activities whatsoever at the time of the fire, even though he was uninjured'' and failed to use the boat's public address system to warn passengers and crew members about the blaze, according to court papers.

What happened on the night of the fire aboard Conception

Citing a confidential report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles Times reported that the fire started in a plastic trash can on the boat's main deck and spread rapidly. The blaze blocked exits for those below deck, the report said.

According to evidence presented at the 10-day trial, Boylan, as captain of the Conception, committed a series of failures -- including abandoning his ship instead of rescuing passengers -- that resulted in the disaster. Such conduct constituted misconduct, gross negligence and inattention to his duties and led to the deaths of 34 victims, the jury found.

Evidence also showed that the dive boat was required by Coast Guard regulations to have a night patrol in case of fire or a person overboard. But Boylan did not use a roving patrol to protect the vessel while passengers and crew slept, prosecutors said.

The captain made a mayday call to the Coast Guard after seeing flames, but did not use the intercom system to communicate with the people below deck or attempt to fight the fire before jumping into the sea, the jury was told.

In one of the most harrowing parts of the trial, the jury was shown cellphone video taken by a passenger before she died showing those in the sleeping quarters as it was filling up with smoke.

"The passengers didn't know it, but their captain had already jumped overboard,'' a prosecutor said. "The crew had no idea what to do.''

It took rescue boats about an hour to reach the disaster. By that time, the Conception was totally engulfed in flames and all 34 victims had died.

"The key issue here is the defendant's duties as captain,'' according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The defense argued that the flames quickly closed in on Boylan, but he stayed aboard until he made the mayday call and only jumped when he was sure he would not live otherwise.

The fire broke out while the boat was anchored in Platt's Harbor near Santa Cruz Island.

Boylan was originally charged in December 2020 with 34 counts of seaman's manslaughter, but after the defense objected, prosecutors refiled an indictment on the single count covering all the deaths.

"Defendant has never apologized, much less taken any responsibility for the atrocity he caused,'' according to the prosecution's sentencing papers.

The fire prompted criminal and safety investigations. Victims' families have also filed claims against Fritzler and his company.

The company, in turn, filed a legal claim to shield it from damages under a maritime law that limits liability for vessel owners.

The families' suits contend that the 41-year-old Conception was in blatant violation of numerous Coast Guard regulations, including failing to maintain an overnight roving safety watch and failure to provide a safe means for storing and charging lithium-ion batteries, and that the below-deck passenger accommodations lacked emergency exits.

Boylan is free on a $75,000 bond pending his surrender.

City News Service and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

This board might be of some help http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192

The board does not list Moscow but does list St. Petersburg and is for people cruising Northern Europe and the Baltics.

I imagine your best bet would be a river cruise. Check out Avalon, Viking etc.

Thanks just starting my search :-)

We've done some cruises that called at St Petersburg that offered a day's excursion to Moscow. It left VERY early in the AM, you flew, it was pricy, and folks said it was tiring. A day in Moscow is not enough to see and appreciate the city, and unless you've been to St Petersburg several times, you miss all there is to see there. Most folks who've done it that i've talked to would not recommend the Moscow excursion if you're taking a ocean liner cruise calling at St Petersburg, but you're on a river cruise whereby you get to spend 3 or 4 days in Moscow......yes.

paul929207

We took a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It was a six day cruise plus four days on either end. Still did not have enough time.

Keith1010

I would look at a river cruise as well.

You mention northern Europe so I assume you are interested in a sea cruise which would be on the Baltic Sea. Moscow is far inland, no sea cruises. As mentioned, excursions to Moscow are offered on the 2 day stops in St. Petersburg, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest that a tour of Moscow would require a land visit or a river cruise. Both will require a visa which is waived for licensed tour group in St. Petersburg.

We just returned from a Vantage river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We spent 3 day in a hotel in Moscow before getting on the ship. The story and pictures are on our website.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Thanks everyone for your help. Thanks also to Steve and Kathy ! soo much information very helpful :)

river cruises or most of the cruises that go to st petersburg for 2 nights do an excursion upto moscow - they fly you up there and stay overnight and fly back

celebrity and NCL both did it when we did the baltics with them

Can They Make Me a Moscow Mule?

Dumb question I know, but I've been wondering this for a while, and I don't think I've seen it answered. Obviously not offered in Vintages, the Martini Bar, or World-Class, but what about at the Sunset Bar or in Michael's?

Also, Pimm's Cup, same question.

I was able to get a Moscow Mule at the World Class Bar on Equinox in December.

Yay! Thanks so much.

Ensemble Lounge or Passport bar (I forget) also offered them on Equinox. They now offer Ginger Beer on the ship which you need for the "mule".

The Martini bar, Sunset bar, Passport bar and Ensemble lounge all normally carry both ginger ale and ginger beer, so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).

so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).
I don't know about the knowledgeable part...I asked for a Paralyzer in a few bars on my March 2017 B2B Constellation cruise and they had no idea until I finally found a "knowledgeable" bartender midway thru my second cruise. I also asked for a Pain Killer during my 30 days on the ship and no bartender knew how to make one or the desire to google it.

Lived on these on Solstice last October! The barman in Ensemble Lounge made the best one ever. I would often stop by to get one, or he also worked at the Sunset Bar so also got them there during the day. I know Mast Bar also made them but w're not as good IMO.

Same for us...served in the copper mugs!

We're also on the Solstice. Do you remember his name?

I'm not really going on the cruise to drink, but I need a libation or two in evenings.

If you happen to find yourself on Qsine, they make a mighty fine version of the mule as well.

What is a Moscow mule? Never heard of it.
Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. Usually served in a special copper mug.
Are they good?

margsipie

On the Solstice now and I've had several in the Passport bar

Never had a problem getting anything if they had the makings, even if you needed to explain how to make it.

I like them because they're not too sweet, and I really love the spiciness of the ginger. I don't really like sweet drinks, but I can do a Pimm's cup because of the cucumber and lemon.

OCA REP

I believe that when ordering more obscure drinks, or something that you might prefer to be made a certain way, you should know the ingredients and be able to communicate that to the bartender. I would not assume a bartender is going to Google a drink recipe. Perhaps a PARALYZER or PAIN KILLER are well known cocktails, but I have never heard of them.

We enjoy a top-shelf margarita made according to a recipe we enjoy at home. A friendly discussion with the bartenders at the Mast Bar and Michael's Club, along with instructions on the proper preparation, got us service with a smile... and a nearly perfect margarita each time.

Enjoy yourself!

miched

The taste depends on the brand of ginger beer. There is Goslings, Bunderberg and Fever Tree to name the brands that they have had on board. Sometimes if you order one they may also use ginger ale. Fever Tree is rare. A 4 pack of 6.8oz bottles at the lowest price is about $5, available at Sur La Table for $8.

As with most drinks if you change the spirit it is a different drink. Use rum instead of vodka and it is a dark and stormy. That is usually made with Goslings Ginger Beer and Goslings rum. I prefer Kraken rum over the Goslings.

I hope not. Ginger ale is too sweet.
