One Week Sri Lanka Itinerary for Couples: Luxury, Wildlife, & Tea

Last updated: April 14, 2020 - Written by Jessica Norah 49 Comments

We wanted to share a one week Sri Lanka itinerary that we think is perfect for couples, which focuses on wildlife, romance, luxury, and tea. Specifically it includes staying at the top luxury resort in Sri Lanka, soaking up the beautiful scenery of Sri Lanka’s hilly Tea Country, exploring ancient sites, admiring waterfalls, staying in a luxury tented camp, and searching for leopards on safari.

We were in Sri Lanka last summer speaking at a conference and afterwards we decided to head off on our own on a short trip around Sri Lanka. Laurence had already been to Sri Lanka twice so wasn’t interested in many of the main tourist spots and I wanted a short luxury trip that focused on tea and leopards. We checked out a number of tour companies and found Jetwing Eco Holidays who helps plan and execute customized and tailor-made trips.

We’ll share a one week Sri Lanka itinerary based on our trip that is perfect for couples who enjoy tea, romance, wildlife and want a bit of luxury. This would be a perfect trip for a couple on honeymoon!

Planning our Sri Lanka Itinerary

As mentioned, we had been invited last summer to Colombo, Sri Lanka to attend a conference. Laurence was nominated for a travel blog award and was asked to speak at the Professional Travel Bloggers Association TBC Asia travel conference.

After that event, I wanted to explore a bit of the country but we didn’t have a lot of time to spare or time to plan, so we decided to book a trip with a tour company as self-driving in Sri Lanka is not particularly ideal given the conditions of many of the roads outside the capital. We also wanted a relaxing trip and something geared to couples, with a focus on the country’s tea country and wildlife.

Laurence has already spent a couple of weeks in the country on two prior trips, so he was reluctant to simply revisit all the same spots again. You can see his recommended 2-week Sri Lanka trip itinerary  (perfect if you have time and want to hit the island’s highlights) which also includes tips for traveling in Sri Lanka (best time of year, weather, visas, packing tips, top attractions).

I am not going to repeat most of those details, but here are a few practical tips about planning a trip to Sri Lanka as well as how we chose a tour company to work with during our trip to Sri Lanka.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

This is always a difficult question to answer about any place, and Sri Lanka is no different. I would recommend to first base it on your interests and itinerary, next on the weather, and finally on your budget to determine the best time for you.

Sightseeing priorities . First, think about where you most want to go and what you want to see. Pick a couple of priorities from the list and then you can base your itinerary around those. Do you want to see whales and dolphins, see elephants, go birdwatching, visit temples, relax on the beaches, take part in a festival, visit when there are few tourists? Check on the dates of festivals, opening dates for attractions and parks, best times to see wildlife, etc.

Be sure to note that the best time for something may differ based on the region of Sri Lanka you plan to visit as whales migrate around the island, weather differences affects the bird species you’ll see, and beach seasons vary between the east to south coasts.

For instance, the Buddhist festival Kandy Esala Perahera (Festival of the Tooth) takes place in Kandy in July and August, the best time of year to see whales around Mirissa is November to April although peak season for other areas of the island are different, beach season in the south is from January to April but May to July in the east, birdwatching is good year round but winter migrants are around from November to April, and The Gathering of Elephants takes place from July to October.

Note that some of the parks may close for part of the year due to maintenance, drought, or other reasons.

Weather. In terms of weather, it depends heavily on which parts of the island you want to visit. Despite being a relatively small island, Sri Lanka experiences markedly different weather across the island due to it having two separate monsoon seasons.  Generally, April to June is the wettest time of the year in the west and hill country of Sri Lanka (including Kandy). On the east coast, the wettest time of year is generally in November and January. To further complicate matters, there is a inter-monsoonal period where there are often heavy rainfall and storms occurring throughout the island during October and November.

So speaking in very general terms about the weather, the best time to visit the west coast, south coast, and hill country is from December through March and the best time to visit the east coast is from April to September. Sadly the two do not overlap so you’ll likely have to accept the possibility of some monsoon weather if you plan to travel to multiple areas of the island. However, the weather is unpredictable and despite the scary word monsoon, the weather tends not to be overly dramatic in Sri Lanka and storms tend to blow over quickly.

In terms of temperature, expect warm to hot weather no matter what time of year you visit. Expect daily temperatures of around 82 F (28 degrees Celsius) in the lower and coastal areas, decreasing as you go up in elevation to average around 68 F (20 C) in Kandy. Humidity is high throughout the island, ranging from 60% to 90%.

Cost. In terms of cost, the best time to visit is during the monsoon seasons on each part of the island. Sri Lanka is affordable if you seek out deals but it is more expensive than India and has a fast growing economy. If you want to travel on a small budget, the best advice is to go outside the best weather period discussed above.

Other ways to save money during any time of year is to stay in hostels and simple guest houses, use buses as main modes of transportation, and seek out simple local restaurants. Just note that tipping (generally about 10%) is customary and expected for guides, drivers, restaurant servers, bag carriers, temple staff, etc. and should be included in your budget.

How long should I spend in Sri Lanka?

This really just depends on how much time you have and what you want to see while in the country. You can easily explore the capital city and head off to a couple of major attractions and a national park in a short fast-paced 3 day trip. However, if you really want to explore the major highlights of the island you’ll need at least 2 weeks. If you want to try to hit all the regions and spend a bit of time in each, I’d suggest a month.

Laurence has put together a good recommended 2-week Sri Lanka trip that you might want to use as a basis for planning your own trip and you can deduct or add days to it based on your time and interests. No matter how much time you have, just note that transportation from one area to another can often take longer than expected due to poor roads, weather, and traffic congestion.

Packing Tips for Sri Lanka?

In general, you’ll want to be sure to pack for hot weather, cooler evenings in the hill country and Kandy, humidity, and rain. You’ll probably also want to pack your swimwear for swimming pool and/or beach time and insect protection. You’ll find mosquitoes and flies in Sri Lanka and if you head into the higher elevations you’ll probably also encounter leeches.

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon Kandy

A special note on protecting against leeches in Sri Lanka

If you plan to head to an area of Sri Lanka that will likely have leeches (particularly the rainforest area in the southwest or the central Hill Country), I would bring along some leech protection.  Leeches will be more prevalent following rainfall. You can also pick it up in Colombo but you’ll be more limited in options so best to buy it before you leave home if you can.

I was under the belief prior to being in Sri Lanka that leeches only lived in the water, but we saw them coming towards us on lawns and perched on weeds while hiking. Terrestrial leeches, or land leeches, essentially sense movement and move towards it to find a host. I found it a bit terrifying to see them coming towards us on a lawn! Leeches can burrow through thin socks and pants and can even enter through the eyelets of shoes and boots.

The best way to prevent against leeches is to wear leech socks and also wear thicker pants so there is less chance for them to burrow through. Wearing light-colored clothing will also help you spot leeches easier so you can remove them from your clothing quickly. You can also apply a leech repellent wash, cream, or spray to your feet and legs as well as to shoes, socks, and pants.

Note that if bitten you should remove the leech using a fingernail or other flat, blunt object to break the seal of the oral sucker by gently pushing your fingernail against your skin, then flick the leech away. If you try just pulling them off or spraying or burning them, they may release the contents of their stomach into your wound which increases chance of infection. Bleeding is normal and to be expected. Wounds should be washed with soap and water and you can bandage the wound if bleeding continues. Leech bites can be scary although rarely dangerous, but do watch the wound for any infections.

Suggested Packing List for Sri Lanka

  • Hot and warm weather clothing as well as a light jacket or cardigan for cool evenings.
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes, and appropriate hiking socks. Water resistant shoes are best for hikes in the wetter areas of the country.
  • Rain gear such as a light waterproof jacket with hood or poncho, boots, and umbrella.
  • A scarf or shawl for women and clothing appropriate to wear to enter temples and other holy sites.
  • Swimwear and sun protection gear such as a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Insect repellent appropriate for mosquitos, flies, and leeches and leech socks . For insect repellents that also work with land leeches, a couple you might try are Mosi-Guard  and Ultrathon Insect Repllent or you can try using a regular insect repellent and also apply Dettol which is a slightly poisonous antiseptic popular with the British (note that it can be poisonous to pets and animals).
  • Sri Lanka uses a 220V system (so leave home any 110V items unless you bring a voltage converter) with places using both three-pinned square (like in UK) and three-pinned round plugs (like in India) so you’ll want to bring along a few plug travel adapters if your electronics have other plugs.
  • Other things you might not want to forget: camera, chargers and batteries, travel power strip/surge protector, journal, book or games, sandals, antiseptic gel or wipes, lip balm, basic first aid kit, safari hat, binoculars, and a travel flashlight or headlamp.

Why we chose to work with Jetwing Eco Holidays?

As we started researching our trip, we found three tour companies in Sri Lanka that we initially looked at as contenders. We were wanting a locally based company that could do the sort of private tour we wanted and had a good reputation. We found Jetwing Eco Holidays , a locally based tour operator specializing in eco-friendly holidays, which are particularly focused on the traveler who wants to focus on wildlife, ecology, and cultural attractions. We were impressed by the company’s  wildlife and conservation efforts which is something that is still not yet widespread in Sri Lanka.

We contacted Jetwing Eco Holidays about their itineraries as we liked a few of their pre-set tours, but needed to change the number of days and some of the activities and they told us they specialized in custom tours and they’d be happy to put together a 5-day itinerary based on our needs and preferences.

We ended up cobbling together elements from their Tea Trails in Sri Lanka itinerary and their Leopard Safari Package . We basically put together our perfect holiday as it incorporated two of my favorite things: tea and cats!

Laurence and I wanted to do very little planning other than choosing some of the places we wanted to visit and having a choice in hotels, and Jetwing handled the rest for us. They provided us with a day-to-day itinerary, checked on attraction opening hours, booked our accommodations, scheduled all our transportation from Colombo, and scheduled our jeep safari rides for our time at Yala National Park.

We had the same driver/guide throughout our trip from our hotel pickup in Colombo to our drop off at the airport which was nice. They also made it clear to us what expenses were covered and what we needed to cover during the trip such as some of the meals, gratuities, and attraction fees.

We enjoyed the mix between having a lot of say in our itinerary but having all the details handled for us by Jetwing Eco Holidays. We ended up creating a custom private Sri Lanka itinerary that was perfect for us.

Where to find out more information about Sri Lanka?

A good place to start is to check out the information and resources available from the Sri Lanka   official tourism board . This should give you a good idea about travel practicalities, things to see, and places to stay. You can also check out Laurence’s collection of  Sri Lanka posts that include a sightseeing itinerary, practical information, and photo essays.

One Week Sri Lanka Itinerary for Couples

Our 1 week itinerary is designed for couples looking for relaxation, a bit of the exotic, great scenery, romance, and some wildlife. It also helps if you love tea and have a sense of adventure! This Sri Lanka Itinerary for couples was put together by us based on our own recent travel experience as a couple to Sri Lanka with Jetwing Eco Holidays ; however, while we were limited to only 5 days as we had to return to start another travel project, neither of us felt it was enough time so we’ve lengthened it to spending a full 7 days in Sri Lanka (plus 2 travel days, one for traveling to Sri Lanka and one for traveling home).

The itinerary could easily be adjusted back to 5 days (see this post for a day-by-day post about our 5 day Sri Lanka trip ) or significantly lengthened depending on your needs. We also make suggestions below for how this 1 week itinerary can be adjusted along the way so you can use it to create your own perfect Sri Lanka itinerary. Here we go!

Sri Lanka Itinerary Day 1: Explore either Colombo or Kandy

No matter where you are flying from, most likely you’ll be arriving in Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s primary international airport. Depending on your interests, I would advise either spending your first full day relaxing from your travels and sightseeing in the capital city of Colombo or head onto Kandy to spend one day exploring some larger city highlights of Sri Lanka.

If you are working with a tour company, they can easily arrange for a driver to pick you up from your hotel and do a driving or walking tour of the city and visits to some of the major attractions. This will give you a chance to see a bit of one of Sri Lanka’s cities, explore some cultural sites, and get acquainted with Sri Lanka’s food and culture.

We spent a few days in Colombo because of our conference and it was good to have a taste of the city life in Sri Lanka before heading out into the rural parts of the country where we spent the rest of our trip. This is also a good time to pick up anything you might need for the rest of your trip as options are much more limited outside of Colombo and the larger cities.

Option 1: Explore Colombo

Relax at your hotel and enjoy the amenities, as many of the larger hotels and resorts in Colombo include swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, and multiple restaurants. You can also head out for some self-exploration on foot, by taxi, city bus, or by tuk tuk or hire a driver/guide for an easy day out.

You’ll see many colonial buildings and temples in the capital city and may want to stop to visit the National Museum of Colombo (largest museum in Sri Lanka), see a temple such as Gangaramaya Temple , attend a theatre performance, walk along the shores of Beira Lake  (location of the giant Lotus Tower ), or explore the vibrant Old Quarter Pettah quarter which is well-known for the Pettah Market, a series of open air bazaars and markets, and the Colombo Old Town Hall & Museum.

Option 2: Explore Kandy

Another option is to head to Kandy which brings you to the Tea Country area. You can get to Kandy from Colombo by driving (~ 3 hours), hiring a driver guide, or by taking the scenic train from Colombo (~ 3 hours). Here you can relax at your hotel or go out exploring some of the many city’s attractions. Popular attractions in or near Kandy include Sri Dalada Maligawa  (a.k.a. Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), the Ceylon Tea Museum (recommended for tea lovers), the National Museum of Kandy  (housed in former Royal Place), and Peradeniya Botanic Gardens.

Note than many of the attractions here (including the tea museum and botanical gardens) are located outside the city center and will require a taxi, bus, or driver to get to them.

Where to Stay in Columbo or Kandy

We’d recommended overnight in either Colombo or Kandy. There are tons of choices in both of these cities ranging from simple local guesthouses to luxury hotels, and you can compare Colombo hotel prices  or compare Kandy hotel prices .

Our Columbo luxury hotel recommendations include Cinnamon Grand , Cinnamon Red , Jetwing Columbo Seven , and Cinnamon Lakeside . Our Kandy luxury lodging recommendations are  Santani Resort & Spa , The Grand Kandyan , and The Elephant Stables .

Sri Lanka Itinerary Day 2: Head into the Hill Country

Today you can make your way from either Colombo or Kandy to the luxurious oasis that is Ceylon Tea Trails . You can decide if you want to stop and take the scenic route and see some sights along the way (e.g., waterfalls, temples, elephant orphanage) or just get there as directly as possible.

How to Get to the Hill Country and Ceylon Tea Trails

You have a few options of how to get to Ceylon Tea Trails. You can be driven by a private driver or drive yourself (4-5 hours from Colombo, 2-3 hours from Kandy), take the scenic train to Hatton and then a shuttle from Tea Trails will pick you up (6-7 hours from Colombo, 2.5 hours from Kandy), or go by helicopter or plane (quickest but most expensive option).

If you choose the train, I’d recommend a first class reserved seat train ticket in an observation car for the best views (read this great Sri Lanka  train info if you decide to travel via rail).

If you want to travel by helicopter or plane, Tea Trails can provide a list of companies that provide transfers to and from the hotel and rate sheets. Cinnamon Air operates flights that can land in Castlereagh Reservoir (just next to both Castlereagh and Summerville bungalows).

Kandy train 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon

We chose to go from Colombo to Ceylon Tea Trails by car and we were met at our hotel lobby and driven by our competent driver Nawfer in a comfortable mini-van. The traffic in and around Colombo was a bit chaotic, but it became much lighter as we left the sprawling suburbs of the city. It took us almost 5 hours to reach Ceylon Tea Trails with a stop for lunch and a few very short photo stops along the way.

The scenery becomes much more scenic as you drive into the green hilly Tea Country and the last hour or two of our drive was very pleasant as we could see small waterfalls and tea fields out the window. There are several tourist attractions you could visit along the way, including waterfalls, parks, and temples, but you’ll need to add some time for stops and taking less direct routes. If you are working with a tour company, I would go over your options with them and be clear about what you want to see along the way if you want to make stops so they can get an appropriate itinerary ready for the driver and give you a time estimate.

Staying at Ceylon Tea Trails

Ceylon Tea Trails is probably the most coveted place to stay in Sri Lanka,  and for us it was the perfect place for history and tea lovers like us who were seeking some pampering and romantic time alone. The private luxury resort is comprised of five colonial-era tea planter bungalows nestled in the tea-carpeted hills of the Bogawantalawa region. Each of the bungalows offers 4 to 6 unique rooms and a dedicated butler, chef, and house staff, and each has its own unique history and character.

Ceylon Tea Trails was the first Relais & Châteaux property in Sri Lanka and remains one of the only ones in the country. We also loved that there are plenty of activities on offer and our stay was worry and bill free as rates included all meals, most drinks, laundry, taxes, and transfer services.

We had an absolutely blissful 2-night stay at Ceylon Tea Trails (this is the minimum night stay), which wasn’t long enough, so we’d recommend 3 nights which is what we included in this itinerary. You can read this very detailed review of our stay at Ceylon Tea Trails which should tell you all you need to know to decide whether Ceylon Tea Trails is a good choice for you.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country?

Ceylon Tea Trails is an absolutely wonderful property and one of the highlights of our trip; however, if the room rates are a bit more than your budget allows or if they happen to be fully booked during your trip dates, there are a lot of other mid-range and luxury properties in the area that are easier on the budget and can still provide a romantic escape.

You can also compare best prices for hundreds of Nuwara Eliya District hotels here  for your travel dates, which range from hostels and guest houses to luxury resorts.

Some other romantic luxury properties located in Tea Country include Mandira Craig Appin Bungalow ,  Jetwing St. Andrew’s ,  Governor’s Mansion ,  Warwick Gardens , and  Heritance Tea Factory .

Sri Lanka Itinerary Days 3 & 4: Enjoy Tea Country & Relax at Ceylon Tea Trails

After a couple of days of traveling and sightseeing, we’d recommend two entire days filled with lazy pursuits, good food and drink, and luxurious pampering surrounded by lovely scenery. Most activities are included in the resort fees, although you’ll pay extra for special things like guided trips, spa treatments, and city sightseeing tours.

The choices are vast and there is so much to do at Tea Trails that most people never leave; however, most do leave their own bungalow to explore the other bungalows and take part in other activities (for instance tennis at Tientsin, hot tub at Dunkeld, or kayaking at Summerville). If you do want to leave, it is easy to arrange transfers to nearby towns, guided hiking trips, and other excursions.

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon Kandy

Depending on your interests, you can make your stay at Ceylon Tea Trails fit your tastes, and the house staff is more than willing to help in any way they can. We just recommend asking in advance so they have time to make any necessary arrangements (e.g., you want to arrange a hike to Adam’s peak, an in-room massage, or have a special Sri Lankan dinner served in your room).

For those who crave relaxation, we’d recommend waking up late to a cup of tea, relaxing by the pool, reading in one of the paneled libraries, playing board games, cards, or billiards, indulging in afternoon teas, walking in the garden or taking short self-guided hikes to a nearby bungalow, arranging an in-room movie, booking in-room spa treatments, and enjoying evening drinks in front of the fireplace.

For those who crave activity, we’d recommend taking advantage of a guided hike, climbing nearby Adam’s Peak , biking, arranging day excursions to nearby towns or a golf outing, visiting a local market, playing croquet or tennis, going swimming, or expending some energy kayaking.

We’d recommend that anyone interested in tea take advantage of their surroundings. Ceylon Tea Trails is owned by the Dilmah Tea family, and you’ll be staying in the homes of former tea planters and will be surrounded by fields full of Ceylon tea. For instance, you can arrange to take the daily complimentary guided Dunkeld tea factory tour, learn the history of the Dilmah family and tea growing in Sri Lanka (a nice book on this topic is provided in each room), hike amongst the tea fields, indulge in the daily offered afternoon tea, and try a wide range of Dilmah teas which are on offer throughout your stay. Don’t worry if you prefer coffee, coffee is also available!

Ceylon Tea Trails Sri Lanka hotel resort Tea Country

In terms of food, you’ll be served bed tea (tea in bed each morning), breakfast, a 3-course lunch, afternoon tea, and a 4-course dinner. Snacks and canapés are also available as you wish in case you get hungry in between meal times! Of course you can also forego meals or tea if you begin worrying about whether or not you’ll fit back out the door at the end of your stay!

You also have the option to choose between traditional British/Western options and Sri Lankan for most meals and I’d take advantage of being able to try some local dishes during your stay. Drinks are available to order (or help yourself in the bar area) all day long, which range from tea and coffee to wine and whisky. You can also order mixed drinks as well.

A stay at Ceylon Tea Trail is time to enjoy relaxed luxury among the beautiful Sri Lankan scenery with your partner. The well-trained staff, lush scenery, good food, and beautiful historical properties are great ingredients for a fantastic romantic trip. We highly recommend it as part of any couples holiday to Sri Lanka and you can read an in-depth story about our stay at Ceylon Tea Trails  to learn more and see more photos.

Sri Lanka Itinerary Day 5: Tea Country to Yala National Park

It is time to say goodbye to the relaxed luxury of Ceylon Tea Trails and set out for the more adventurous part of your trip. Off to beaches, sleeping in a tented camp, and some wildlife spotting! You can fly to an airport near Yala (about an hour drive from the park) if it fits your budget (check with Cinnamon Air or local helicopter charter companies) or you can go the more typical route by land. If you are going by land, prepare yourself for a long drive (5 to 6 hours) by having a hearty breakfast before heading off to Yala National Park, which is well-known for having one of the highest density of leopards in the world along with loads of other animals.

You can choose to just drive directly to Yala with stops for lunch and short breaks for toilet and stretch stops, or you can break up the drive with a few stops at attractions along the way. Along the route, there are museums, waterfalls, temples, tourist shops, tea factories, monasteries, and other things to do, including Ravana Caves, Ravana Falls, Buduruwagala, and Dhowa Rock Temple. If you do make stops at any attractions, be sure to plan this out in advance and just note it will be adding to your driving time and arrival at your hotel in Yala.

Our drive took a total of about 7 hours and included stops for a cup of tea in Bandarawela at Mlesna Tea Centre (also a popular place for buying tea) and lunch on the terrace at Ella Mount Heaven Hotel which boasts some great mountain views.

We also chose to stop at two attractions along the way:   Ravana Falls (also known as Ravana-Ella Falls and Rawana Falls) and Buduruwagala . We were happy to have the stops to break up the long drive and there was some lovely scenery to keep up from getting too bored on the drive, and both Ravana Falls and the ancient Buddhist rock sculptures at Buduruwagala were both worth the stops.

We actually ended up having more of an adventure than expected at Buduruwagala because of a closed bridge, making it necessary to take a tuk tuk from a local boy to reach the Buddhist rock structures. We arrived at our final destination, Yala Tented Camp, in the early evening. We had time to check in, relax a bit, explore the property, and then have dinner before going to bed early so we could get up for an early morning safari ride.

Where to stay at Yala National Park?

There are currently no lodging options inside the park (except for a handful of bungalows meant for larger groups, you can see them here ), but you can stay very close to the park. One popular type of lodging is to spend the night at a tented camp or in tented villas, and we chose to stay in one of the tented camps operated by Jetwing.  Jetwing Yala   offers two types of accommodation. There’s a traditional hotel, with the sort of rooms and services you would expect from a good hotel, and the tented camp that is made of tented villas which is where we chose to stay.

Jetwing Tented Villas Camp is perfect for those who enjoy, or want to try, glamping. You stay in a large, private tent that is set up upon a large wooden structure. The walls are made of tent-like canvas materials but it includes a proper floor, a giant bed, wardrobe, mini-refrigerator, lamps, flush toilet, shower, towels, and many of the normal amenities you’d expect in a regular hotel room.

We had our choice of both a regular shower in the bathroom as well as an outdoor shower. Locks are used to secure the tent at night and when you are not inside, and there was a large porch with deck chairs to sit and enjoy the view. Our tented villa also came with a butler, and we were very fortunate to have a fantastic butler named Thilanka who was always available and even made us fantastic towel animals. The hotel also included a swimming pool, hot tub, restaurants, bars, and a beach area.

glamping 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon

Is glamping in Sri Lanka for me? Now, glamping is fun for us, but it is not for everyone. I am not a huge fan of regular basic camping but we still enjoy “roughing it” a bit and being closer to nature. Tented camps are not a great fit for those who can’t stand a bit of heat or cold or an insect bite or two, although they may also not be a good fit for those who’d rather actually have a real basic camping experience.

I have had several glamping experiences, and you should be prepared for the odd insect, lizard, bird, or even rodent to potentially find its way inside your tent, crawl out of the sink, or be perched on your patio in the morning. Also expect to hear animals and birds from your tent in the evening, which we enjoyed but can be frightening or annoying to some people.

It is advised that at any of the camps near Yala that all guests be driven back and forth at night and take flashlights for safety reasons. We saw several larger animals when being driven back to our tent in the evenings by Thilanka in a golf cart, so we definitely recommend not walking alone at night in the area. But if you are prepared for all these things, it is a fun experience to be able to be able to enjoy the stars from your porch and slip into a comfortable bed to enjoy the sounds of the night.

Hotel alternatives to Yala Tented Villas?

If Yala Tented Villas is fully booked or you’re looking to compare other alternatives that still fit the sort of tented camp or villa feel, you can check out the luxurious  Wild Coast Lodge  (run by the same company as Ceylon Tea Trails), Cinnamon Wild Yala , Chena Huts , and Mahoora .

If you or your traveling partner would prefer to be a bit more separated from nature, you can also check out more traditional lodging alternatives such as the hotel at  Jetwing Yala (adjacent to the Yala Tented Villas Camp), Thaulle Resort , and Chandrika Hotel . Regular camping options are also available in the area.

Sri Lanka Itinerary Days 6 & 7: Yala National Park

Your priority for the next two days will likely be doing game drives and wildlife spotting at Yala National Park . Yala National Park has one of the highest density of leopards in the world, with around 25 leopards believed to frequent the section of Yala open to the public. So you do have a decent chance of seeing a leopard, but they are fairly elusive wild animals so there is of course no guarantee. However, there is much more to Yala than just leopards, and in fact there are believed to be over 44 species of mammals and over 215 bird species here!

You can arrange jeep safari rides through your tour company, hotel, or independently. Normally, jeep safaris can be arranged for early morning and/or afternoon rides which are the two periods when the animals are most active within the park hours. In the middle of the day, the animals usually rest, sleep, and enjoy an escape from the heat. If you are really short on time, you can arrange an all-day safari but be prepared for a long and likely hot day and you may not see much in the middle of the day.

Our first day at Yala began with our alarm going off around 5am! We were able to make coffee in our room and get dressed by the time Thilanka arrived to drive us to our safari jeep. Nawfer, our Jetwing driver, had switched out our mini-van for a 6-seater jeep. The jeep was much like any other safari jeep, although note that they all have roofs, which are required at Yala to prevent leopards from leaping inside! The seats all had excellent views, so we had plenty of choice in terms of where we sat and stored our stuff since it was just the two of us. The hotel has also prepared box meals for us and our driver so we could eat breakfast while at the park.

Jetwing Yala is only about a 5-minute drive from the Yala National Park entrance so it was a quick drive but we then had to wait for a bit to get tickets. The park opened at 6am, and it is best to arrive a bit before this as there is often a queue of jeeps waiting to get in. Our driver paid the entry fee, and when the gates opened, we were soon inside!

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon

We did both a morning safari drive (from about 6am to 10:30am) and an afternoon one (from about 2:30 to 6:00) and during those drives we saw a large number of animals and birds. Some of the highlights were three leopards, a number of elephants, two Sri Lankan sloth bears, wild water buffalo, crocodiles, a huge crested serpent eagle, many cute blue-tailed bee-eaters, peacocks, and a large number of deer. We were particularly lucky to see a leopard hunting deer (unsuccessfully) and a sloth bear who walked right up next to our jeep.

We had a great time and saw many of the animals that we hoped to see in this one day. For some people one day will be enough, and others will want to devote more time to seeing animals in the park. Personally, we both really love wildlife so we could have easily spent a second day doing game drives but we did not have the luxury of another day.

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon

In addition to game drives, you can spend your time enjoying your private tent, relaxing at the pool, and going to the beach. If you are feeling like you want to get out of the hotel, you can also plan a day excursion. Popular excursions include boating and water sport activities or trips to archaeological or religious sites such as Katharagama temple and the Tissamaharama Rajamaha Vihara.

In between and after our game drives, we took advantage of the hotel’s giant pool which includes a swim-up bar, the beach area, and our large private porch. We also really enjoyed the outdoor shower after a hot full day of safari! It is nice that Yala National Park is so close to the coast, making it easy to split your time between game drives, hotel amenities, and the beach. If beach time is important to you, be sure to choose a hotel that has beach access like Jetwing Tented Camp.

1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples romantic honeymoon

Heading Home: Yala National Park to Colombo Airport

On this final day, it is time for a morning check-out and drive (or you can arrange a flight) into Colombo to fly home from the airport. It is about a 5 hour drive from Yala to the Colombo Airport. Be sure to leave plenty of time to spare to arrive at the airport and check into your international flight as traffic around Colombo can be bad.

We had an afternoon flight booked, so we had to start super early for Nawfer to be able to drive us back to the airport to make our flight. We just had short breaks to eat a boxed lunch (packed by the hotel) and restroom stops along the way. We had an uneventful trip back and easy time getting through airport security, but it would have definitely been a better ending to our trip if we had booked a later flight and been able to leave Yala later and have a more leisurely drive back.

Hope you have enjoyed our 1 week Sri Lanka itinerary for couples!

Great post – Was your trip in November? How was the weather? I am a bit concerned as I am going late Nov-Dec and heard that it can rain alot!

July 17, 2019 at 1:24 pm

Glad you enjoyed our post. We did that particular trip to Sri Lanka (as covered by the article above) in early June so I can’t personally comment on the weather in this area during November/December. It was actually the end of the rainy season in the Hill Country where we were when we visited, we got lucky as there was not too much rain but it was damp and there were a lot of leeches.

I think Laurence has visited three times in different parts of the year, and the thing to know is that the weather patterns are usually regional. So you want to plan your trip by looking at regional weather rather than overall weather for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s weather (and rainy seasons) are going to depend on the area of Sri Lanka you are visiting. As noted, above, Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons. Generally, April to June is the wettest time of the year in the west and hill country of Sri Lanka. On the east coast, the wettest time of year is generally November to January. There is also an inter-monsoonal period where there are often heavy rainfall throughout the island during October and November.

So really it is often rainy season in Sri Lanka but it depends on the area. If you are visiting in November/December, you might want to avoid the eastern part. But I would check the general regional weather for the places you are thinking of visiting and perhaps avoid the areas where there is often a lot of storms and rainfall during that time.

Sri Lanka is a lush place and gets a lot of rainfall, so in addition to avoiding the places where storms are most likely, I’d also just be sure to come prepared for some rain during your trip. With proper raingear, clothing, and shoes, you can still make the most of your trip even on the days it rains.

Hope that helps! Jessica

Hi guys! You’re itinerary seems absolutely amazing! I’m actually going to Sri Lanka at the end of November this year with my gf. Do you think if I sent this link to the Jetwing Eco that they could put the same package together for us? We’ll be there together for 7.5 days after my 7 night stay at surf camp!

September 28, 2017 at 8:10 am

Hi Muninder, Glad you found our Sri Lanka itinerary helpful. Yes, indeed, if you send a message to Jetwing Eco via their website and tell them you want to do a tour similar to the one described in this post, they should have no problem setting up a very similar itinerary with a driver/guide, transfers, and lodging. They can suggest the lodging options available at different price levels so you can choose the one that best fits your travel style and budget. If you have any difficulty getting into contact, just let me know and I am happy to put you into contact and ask them to help you put together a similar itinerary for your trip to Sri Lanka. Best, Jessica

Thanks for the great post and the even better photos! Would love some feedback on my itinerary in terms of how feasible it is in 3 weeks:

1) South Beaches – Tangalla / Mirissa – 5 days

2) Tea Country – Nurawa Eliya – 2 days

3) Cultural Triangle – Dumballa – 3 days

4) Kitesurfing – Kalipitya – 5 days

5) Maldives – 3 days

September 25, 2017 at 12:06 pm

Hi Evan, First, glad our Sri Lanka itinerary post was helpful! Now, for your itinerary – I think this is definitely feasible and I think this itinerary would work. I am assuming your 3 weeks includes your travel to and from Sri Lanka leaving you 18 days to actually explore? I would personally suggest perhaps adding a day to the Tea Country area if that area is of interest (if not, 2 days is fine to see some highlights) and I would suggest adding more days to the Maldives – most people split there time between two resorts/hotels on a couple of different islands so 4-5 days would be more ideal. However, if the Maldives is not high on your list or you want to really spend more time exploring the islands when you do visit, I’d skip it as it will suck time from your Sri Lanka itinerary and you can add those days to your other locations. If you are going for the beaches and water activities, you can all that in the South Beaches and around Kalipitya although these areas aren’t as developed for tourism as the Maldives, so depends on what you are looking for.

I will say from our experience that the time getting between destinations in Sri Lanka can take longer than you expect, especially if you are not traveling via train or plane, as travel by road (self-drive, driver, or bus) can be slow and it almost always took longer than our driver initially told us to get anywhere. I’d also be sure to check on what to expect with the weather in each of the locations during the season you are traveling, as weather in Sri Lanka varies greatly by region. It may be monsoon season in one part of the island, and warm and dry in another.

Hope this helps, and wishing you a great trip to Sri Lanka! Jessica

Excellent guide for Sri Lanka, Jessica. Your post gave me a great insight into this place which I hope to see someday. If I were to spend only a week there, what part of the island do you think I should start with and how much can I see in that amount of time?

January 16, 2017 at 11:14 am

Thanks Anda! Um, I would say it depends on what you are most interested in – birdwatching, tea, beaches, whale watching, wildlife safaris, festivals, scenic train rides, cultural sites, temples, etc. Some of the most popular spots are Sigiriya, Kandy, Gaelle, beach areas, and the wildlife parks (such as Yala and Minneriya). In a week, you should be able to get from Colombo to whatever region you are most interested in seeing and get to explore a lot of it in one week or you can travel at a quicker pace and hit several highlights in the country within a week. Unless you are planning to fly, traveling around Sri Lanka can take a while and we had two long days of driving on our trip. I would take a look at Laurence’s 2 week itinerary and this one and then let me know what you are most interested in seeing and I am happy to give you suggestions any time! Best, Jessica

I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Sri Lanka, and learned so much about the country after the unfortunate tsunami but I’m so glad it has bounced back! It’s definitely been on my radar for such a long time and I’d love to go one day! You’re guides are always so incredibly thorough so I’ve pinned this for later! 🙂

January 14, 2017 at 12:30 pm

Hi Lolo, Yes, it is sad how a tragedy is how a lot of people learn about places but it is so true. We were talking to Iceland tourism folks, and they told us that the volcanic ash nightmare that cancelled so many flights put them on the map for a lot of people and their visitor numbers keep climbing! I hope that you get a chance to visit Sri Lanka soon, it has a lot to offer. Thanks so much for pinning our Sri Lanka guide! Best, Jessica

Ruth Post author

January 13, 2017 at 7:50 pm

After reading your post, I find it a bit difficult to decide what part of the island to make a priority. There is so much to see and do! I love wildlife, so, that would be my top priority. Amazing how many species you saw in the National Park. Overall, like a lot the variety and vibe of the island.

January 14, 2017 at 12:27 pm

Hi Ruth, If wildlife is a priority for you when traveling, I’d definitely recommend Sri Lanka as a destination. That is one of the areas where it definitely shines (versus things like nightlife, art museums, or shopping). Leopards, elephants, whales, and birds are some of the specialities here – but you’ll also see a number of other animals as well. We saw tons of different species in only 1 day of safari (definitely recommend at least 2 days at Yala). If going, I would definitely visit Yala for the leopards (it does tend to close in drought season for a short period of time) and there are a few places great for elephants and you might want to time a visit during the annual Elephant Gathering where a number of elephants can be seen around the same watering holes during the dry season (normally Minneriya National Park is the hotspot but do get local advice once in country to see where they currently are located as the herds tend to move around). Whales are also pretty common to spot off the shores and Laurence went on a great whale watching trip a couple years ago and saw several. Jetwing is a good company for ecotourism and wildlife – they have good policies and help aid in the wildlife conservation efforts in Sri Lanka which are still developing. Just let us know if you start planning a trip to Sri Lanka, happy to provide more specific advice! Best, Jessica

The pictures look amazing and it all sounds so good, but I hate to admit the leeches part freaks me out a bit. I do appreciate you being so honest about it and providing some tips to protect against them. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard

January 14, 2017 at 12:16 pm

Hi Anisa, hehe, yes like I was just replying to Paul & Carole, the leeches were scary to me. But honestly they are just tiny little black worms and if they bite you, it doesn’t actually hurt. You can easily remove them as described or they will fall off naturally after a couple of hours. The only concern is a small risk of infection as with any wound and also they can crawl anywhere so you definitely want to prevent them from being able to enter any part of your body, but leech socks, some sort of leech repellent, and wearing thick pants should do the trick! But actually most visitors never see leeches in Sri Lanka, it just depends where you go and also if there has been a lot of rainfall or not. Laurence has gotten bit in Thailand, Sri Lanka, & Australia and doesn’t worry about them as he has never had any ill effects but he does try to protect against them when possible. Best, Jessica

Really comprehensive post full of useful information. I would be concerned seeing leeches approaching across the lawn too! Have yet to visit Sri Lanka but this post gives a great insight. Have pinned for future reference.

January 14, 2017 at 12:10 pm

Hi Paul & Carole, Thanks, glad you found our Sri Lanka itinerary useful. And, yes, the leeches were scary (well to me anyway)! Laurence just shrugged as he’d been to Sri Lanka before and had plenty of experience in Australia and Thailand with leeches, but I was freaked out seeing them move towards me on the lawn. I though they were just found in water. I wasn’t prepared which is why I was sure to write in some leech prevention (and removal) info on this post for future travelers to Sri Lanka. Hope you get a chance to visit Sri Lanka in the future! Best, Jessica

I have heard many times about how beautiful Sri Lanka is. In fact, I have friends who go there almost every year, and I’ve seen vacation photos that your photos remind me of. I love that little bird!! I would want to go where I just sit, sip tea, and see birds that like (I’m a huge bird person!) I think the glamping looks pretty fun – I’ve always been a hotel person, but I would be open to camping that was as nice as that. It almost has a tree house feeling on the deck. Complicated to plan around the weather, but certainly tantalizing!

January 9, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Hi Seana, It is a beautiful destination and a bit “easier” to travel in than India, although more expensive. Yes, those birds are common in Sri Lanka but so beautiful, the blue-tailed bee-eater was one of my favorites! It is a popular place for birdwatchers, especially when the winter migrants fly in to join the native species, and also for those who want to see elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. There are tons of places for glamping in Sri Lanka, especially around Yala. Maybe you’ll have to join your friends on a trip to Sri Lanka in the future 😉 Best, Jessica

Practicalities

Recommended length of stay: 2 weeks

Month of visit: January (we thought the weather was perfect). Note – monsoon season is from May to September, and dry season is from December to March.

Useful tips: US citizens do need a visa to enter Sri Lanka. We visited at a time when it was very unclear whether Visa-on-Arrival was active and we actually contacted the Sri Lankan Embassy in LA to try to clarify things…long story short, we were able to obtain a tourist visa on arrival without much difficulty.

Tea Country

travel couple sri lanka

When entering the country you will most likely be flying in to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport. We hopped in our transportation to head to our first destination: The Taj Samudra, Colombo. We like to pre-book our transportation so we don’t have to deal with haggling for a taxi at the airport – we found ours through GetYourGuide, and they turned out to be very reliable. Bear in mind that the ride was nearly an hour long and it was very hot – so consider grabbing a drink from the airport before you leave!

travel couple sri lanka

Colombo is the country’s capital and is the biggest city in Sri Lanka. We found the Taj Samudra to be perfectly positioned to explore the city, while also offering a peaceful oasis to get away from crowds. Their pool was absolutely stunning and a great place to beat the heat in the afternoons, and all of the food we had at the hotel was delicious. Pictured here is a 4 am early bath time – jet lag is real!

travel couple sri lanka

We definitely recommend walking up Galle Green to check out the beach front area and One Galle Face Mall. This mall has a lot of locally and internationally based stores that were unique and interesting to check out, and we also grabbed a bite to eat on the rooftop.

Just past One Galle Face Mall is the President’s House, and opposite this is the Colombo Lighthouse. These are both worthwhile checking out (from at least the outside). We also visited the Jami Ul Alfar Mosque, notable for its brick red and white exterior, and the Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil.

travel couple sri lanka

Visiting Pettah Market was one of the highlights of Colombo. This incredibly busy local market sells everything from fruits and veggies to textiles to souvenirs to flowers to gemstones to much, much more.

By the way, there are lots of great places to get afternoon tea in Colombo (there is a lot of residual British influence in the city). We tried the tea at the Shangri-La hotel which was good, and if we go back hope to try tea at the Dilmah T-lounge or The Kingsbury.

travel couple sri lanka

We had some great food and drink while we were in Colombo. Definitely check out the Gallery Cafe, an art/restaurant hybrid with delicious cocktails. After dinner check out King of the Mambo, a beachfront bar serving up vibes and good music with a side of spectacular view.

travel couple sri lanka

After saying goodbye to Colombo, we departed for the scenic world-renowned train ride to Kandy. We pre-booked our train tickets and had them delivered to our hotel in advance of departure, but became very confused at the train station about which train was ours and which carriage we were meant to sit in. Fortunately, a good samaritan helped us out in exchange for a hefty tip as a donation to his school for deaf children, and we were on our way! We sat in first class mostly to have our own space and be able to keep an eye on our bags. There was air conditioning, and a boy came up and down the aisles selling hot cups of chai.

travel couple sri lanka

Once we arrived in Kandy we checked into our hotel – the Radh. We 10/10 would stay at this hotel again as it was just a phenomenal experience. Our room had a private terrace with a jacuzzi as well as a view over Kandy – we could see all the way to the Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue (nicknamed Big Buddha) on the hill! The Radh hotel also has an amazing daily breakfast buffet that allowed us to fuel up before our adventure days.

travel couple sri lanka

Kandy was our favorite part of Sri Lanka, for a few reasons. One – you simply must book this waterfall and tea plantation tour . Roshan operates the tour from his tuk tuk, and took us through the mountains and forests to find some awesome “locals only” waterfalls in the Kandy area. He even prepared lunch for us to eat in banana leaves, and took us to a tea plantation and educated us about the different plant types. He is such a great guy and we had a phenomenal day with him.

travel couple sri lanka

We also did a day trip to see Sigiriya Rock from afar, and the Dambulla Cave Temples. Although we did not opt to hike all the way up Sigiriya Rock, it was still very impressive from down below. The Dambulla Cave Temples were absolutely stunning – these temples are a UNESCO world heritage site and date back over 22 centuries. Note: there are 364 steps up to the temples, and you do have to leave your shoes at the check in out of respect. Be sure your shoulders and knees are covered as well.

travel couple sri lanka

While in Kandy, we also visited the Old Royal Palace, and saw a procession outside of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. We strolled through Kandy Central Market and even bought some gold jewelry to take home (Kandy is known for gemstones and jewelry!). Our visit to a spice garden was also a nice touch – we sampled things like cinnamon, cloves and more.

Though we only made a brief pitstop in tea country, it was definitely worth it. We were recommended to check out Damro Tea Plantation, which wholesales lots of tea to Lipton and other notable international brands. We toured the factory and learned just how much work actually goes into making tea, and learned a lot about the “tips” that tea comes from. Our favorite part was of course sampling the different types of tea and picking our favorite for a nice cuppa! There are lots of tea plantations in the area, and if we had more time we would have visited others.

travel couple sri lanka

Yala National Park was definitely a stand-out of the trip, and we have to recommend staying at Jetwing Yala. This is probably our favorite hotel that we have stayed at – hands down – EVER. We had never heard of the Jetwing prior to our stay in Sri Lanka, probably because they are a Sri Lankan brand. Jetwing Yala is a luxury hotel with comfortable rooms, first class service, relaxing and affordable spa and delicious food options.

travel couple sri lanka

This specific Jetwing hotel is set on the beach in Yala, extremely close to Yala National Park. Hotel guests are actually not allowed onto the beach after sunset because “that time is for the animals”. While we were staying at the hotel, we were graced by the presence of “Short Tail” – the local elephant, making his rounds around the pool. We also saw water buffalo on the road leading to the hotel, a herd of wildebeest running through the grounds. There were tons of beautiful and cheerful birds as well.

travel couple sri lanka

Speaking of animal life – we saw SO much during our safari to Yala National Park! We opted for a private safari that we booked through GetYourGuide, and were so happy we did. Our guide picked us up from our hotel, assured we entered the park seamlessly was great at spotting animals. He even allowed us to borrow his binoculars so we could see up close! We saw tons of elephants, birds, water buffalo, peacocks, deer, monkeys and even a leopard! It was pouring the day of our safari so we were worried we wouldn’t see anything. Our guide was fantastic and the jeep was covered so it all worked out.

The pool at Jetwing Yala is absolutely massive (too big to capture in a photograph) and is a great place to hang out at the end of the day. Do take advantage of the spa services as the masseuses are very skilled. We also recommend sampling the range of seafood they carry as this is all very fresh and delicious.

travel couple sri lanka

After enjoying the wildlife at Yala, we moved on to our next destination – Tangalle. This was a really relaxing, no hurries – no worries stop on our trip. We did a lot of reading and lazing about, which was a nice break after lots of activity. The beaches of Tangalle are very beautiful. We wouldn’t recommend spending more than 2-3 days around here as it is fairly quiet!

travel couple sri lanka

Mirissa was definitely an awesome place to visit and we wish we could have spent more time here! We did a whale watching tour from Mirissa, and honestly wouldn’t recommend it. We did end up seeing a few blowholes, but the boat was extremely crowded and hectic. The poor creatures seemed like they were trying to swim away from us as fast as they could.

travel couple sri lanka

Mirissa is home to coconut hill which is an insta-famous area of Sri Lanka. Definitely check out the short hike to the top of the hill and take photos in the coconut grove overlooking the ocean.

travel couple sri lanka

The beaches of Mirissa are absolutely spectacular and we wished we spent more time relaxing on them. We stayed at TripleOSix originally but thought it was just OK. Then we moved to Lantern Boutique Hotel which was absolutely superb. We had a few lazy days in the sun, ate dinner on the beach and even saw a mama sea turtle laying eggs!

travel couple sri lanka

After Mirissa we continued making our way around the coast to Jetwing Lighthouse. This hotel wasn’t on our original itinerary, but we had such a great experience at Jetwing Yala that we ended up adding it!

travel couple sri lanka

Jetwing Lighthouse is a sprawling resort with multiple sparkling pools, an amazing spa and big ocean views. As far as beaches go, the small private beach is quite rocky so we only dipped our toes in. While staying here we actually saw some rather large iguanas taking a dip in the pool with us!

travel couple sri lanka

Jetwing Lighthouse is quite close to the Galle Fort, which is an old Dutch Fort that we really enjoyed visiting. We saw the famed lighthouse as well as lots of cute shops and restaurants along Lighthouse Street. There is also a sea turtle hatchery in Galle. The Amangalla Spa looks very upscale and beautiful but sadly we did not make it to these on this trip.

Much too quickly, our trip had come to an end. We visited during pandemic times and were impressed at the speed we were able to get COVID PCR testing done. This was needed for our flight back to the US and done at a bubble just outside the airport. After testing, our transport service dropped us off at our final Jetwing hotel of our stay, Jetwing Blue. This was our least favorite Jetwing hotel. It was busy, crowded and much less luxurious than its sister hotels. However, it was conveniently located a short distance from the airport. We didn’t stay overnight, as we had a middle-of-the-night flight departure time.

Dream Honeymoon In Sri Lanka

I strongly recommend BH Sri Lanka Tours! Our trip was limited due to COVID, but that’s beyond anyone’s control. Our tour guide Sidath found alternative activities for us to do. Hasitha also stayed in touch with us throughout our trip to make sure that everything was ok. Hotels were excellent. Nothing negative to say!

Colombo, Caves & Kandy - 8 days

We loved this tour. We felt like it gave a good mix of different things to see in Sri Lanka. Our tour guide Akhtar was amazing. He was incredibly knowledgeable and was constantly sharing his expertise and interesting facts with us. He was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for him. The tour was very 'On the Go' (up early and lots to do) but this was what we wanted. It was a great week full of interesting activities and tourist sights. My personal highlights would be walking up Sigiriya, the train ride through the mountains and the safari to Udawalawe National Park. The hotels were all comfortable with the best being the Jetwing Lake in Dambulla. The pool there was amazing, I only wish we had more time there as it was so beautiful and we arrived in the dark and left early morning so didn't get to fully enjoy the scenery. I would recommend this tour to others who wanted to experience some highlights of Sri Lanka.

A wonderful trip where I made memories I will always treasure. And Rhi was a big part of that. She made sure the group was on time to planned trips, while having a good time and bringing good vibes. She made an effort to individually talk to everyone and find out about them on the trip, which didn’t get unnoticed. It’s the little things. Along with being super funny and informative. A beautiful country, a great tour manager and guide and a good group of people - couldn’t have asked for more.

This was a fantastic tour! The Aitken Spence team in Colombo was great to work with - very courteous and patient, and quick to answer all my questions. The guide, Tharindu (or Anu) was wonderful as well - very kind and accommodating, and very knowledgeable of Sri Lanka as well. I don’t think I would’ve been able to cover that much on my own. The only regret I have is not being able to climb Sigiriya as a result of the thunderstorm. I should also note that as a single female traveller I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe. I highly recommend this!

Sri Lanka Northeast Explorer - 12 days

The North east explorer was certainly worth the journey - the disappointment was that half way through the trip 2 trips combined ... sadly there were then 25 people on a huge bus ... the trip lost a lot of its appeal. The buffet was tiresome but a necessity as in some cases there was not enough opportunity to explore by ourselves as the hotel was located too far from the township.

What people love about Sri Lanka Tours for Couples

We had the most incredible honeymoon in Sri Lanka. The tour that BH Tours provided allowed us to really see everything Sri Lanka had to offer. We loved exploring the country and we honestly could not name a favourite part of the trip as there were just too many to mention. Udara, our guide was so friendly and really made sure we felt looked after and were having a good time. He went above and beyond by showing us all of Sri Lanka's hidden view points and we will miss stopping for fresh coconuts and mangos on the roadside! We will genuinely miss this amazing country - it has stolen a piece of our hearts. We hope to come back again and will definitely be recommending BH Tours and Udara for anyone who is looking for a dream holiday to Sri Lanka! Thank you again, you have made this trip a trip of a lifetime! ❤️

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

Published: December 6, 2023

A bright blue sky over the Nine Arches bridge going through the jungle in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka was a wonderful surprise. I didn’t know what to expect going into my trip, but I ended up loving every bit of it.

It is a divided country, with the south dominated by Buddhist Sinhalese and the north by Hindu Tamils. After the British left in 1948, the Sinhalese controlled the government and enacted a series of laws that limited Tamil participation in society. Eventually, Tamil protests escalated and a 26-year civil war ensued, only ending in 2009.

Though it has been some time since then, Sri Lanka is still very much recovering — but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit. In fact, my time there was especially memorable due to my experiences meeting and getting to know the incredibly friendly locals. No matter where I went, Sri Lankans welcomed me with kindness and open arms.

Traveling around Sri Lanka is relatively easy and very budget-friendly. English is widely spoken, so once you get used to the chaos, it isn’t too difficult to get around.

With that in mind, here’s my Sri Lanka travel guide so that you can save money, have fun, and make the most of your visit to this beautiful country!

A note on prices and currencies : Costs for attractions in this guide are in USD, while costs for restaurants and accommodations are in LKR. This is to most accurately represent the currency in which you will see prices. Foreign visitors are charged a different price from locals at most attractions, quoted in USD. Registered tourist establishments are required to accept only foreign currency from nonresidents, as part of a governmental scheme to build up the country’s reserves of stronger currencies.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Sri Lanka

The lush hills of a tea plantation in Sri Lanka

1. Tour a tea estate

When the British colonized the island in the early 19th century, they quickly realized that the central highlands had the perfect climate and topography for growing tea. One of the largest, lasting impacts of colonialism is that a significant portion of the country is still covered in tea plantations or estates.

The town of Hatton is known as the tea capital of Sri Lanka, as it’s the central point of a few regions where the plant is still plucked by hand (and one of the few places in the world where this still occurs). Going on a plantation or factory tour is a great way to learn about this integral part of the country’s economy and culture. Tours are often free, though if there is a fee, it’s only around 250 LKR. Tours usually include a tea tasting at the end.

2. See the wildlife at Yala National Park

This is Sri Lanka’s second-largest and most popular national park. It’s well known for its abundant wildlife, especially the elephants and leopards that make their home here. In fact, it’s the best place in the world to try to spot leopards, as it has the highest density of them! The area is culturally significant as well, with two important Buddhist pilgrim sites, Sithulpahuwa and Magul Vihara, located within the park. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit these sites each year. While a guide isn’t required to enter the park, joining a safari led by an experienced local guide is the best way to experience Yala, as you’ll be able to ask questions as they point out animals to you. Safaris are quite affordable too, starting at just 8,600 LKR.

3. Hike Sigiriya Rock

Also known as Lion’s Rock, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the country’s most famous tourist attraction. In the fifth century, Sri Lankan ruler King Kashyapa decided to build his fortress on this massive column of granite rock. While it was abandoned shortly after his death, its remote location meant that the palace remained untouched over the centuries, and today it remains a fascinating example of ancient urban planning.

You can hike to the top for stunning views over the lush landscapes below; it takes an hour to walk up, as it’s single file all the way. As it’s one of the most popular things to do in Sri Lanka, you won’t have this place to yourself. Get there when it opens at 6:30am to avoid huge lines. If you are there after 10am, the crowds are so overwhelming, it’s not worth visiting. Admission is $30 USD ( guided day trips from Kandy that also include visits to the cave temples of Dambulla are $70 USD).

Pro tip: if you’re on a budget, climb Pidurangala Rock instead. It’s much cheaper (500 LKR), plus you’ll actually get views of Sigiriya Rock itself! (Just note that the trail does involve some scrambling at times, while the trail to the top of Sigiriya is steep but easier, with metal steps and staircases.)

4. Take the train

The British built the Sri Lankan railway system in 1864 to transport tea and coffee from plantations to Colombo, where these goods were then shipped out internationally. The train lines are still in use and provide a scenic way to explore the country. There are three main lines, but the ride from Kandy to Ella is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the world. It lasts seven hours and takes you through lush mountains, tropical forests, and endless tea plantations; the picturesque 20th-century Nine Arches Bridge is on this route as well.

If you’d like to take this journey, it’s best to book with a travel agency in advance as seats sell out quickly. Just adjust your expectations regarding timeliness and speed. Don’t be in a hurry when riding the rails in Sri Lanka!

5. Visit Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was the very first capital of Sri Lanka and remained so for around 1,300 years. Today, many of the old ruins still survive and have been restored to their former glory. This archaeological complex and UNESCO site contains many of Buddhism’s holiest places, including Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the fig tree where it is believed that the Buddha himself obtained enlightenment. It’s also home to Jetavanaramaya Dagaba, which at 122 meters (400 feet) is the world’s tallest stupa. Most people either rent a bicycle or hire a tuk-tuk to take them around the complex. Admission to the five main temples is $25 USD, though there are many smaller temples and sites that are either free or just a couple of dollars.

Other Things to See and Do

1. visit kandy.

The country’s second-largest city was also the last capital of Sri Lanka’s monarchy, the Kingdom of Kandy, which arose in the late 16th century and resisted both Dutch and Portuguese rule before finally succumbing to British colonization in the early 19th century. Kandy is known for its well-preserved historic colonial center (now a UNESCO site), as well as the Buddhist shrine the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (supposedly an actual tooth of the Buddha). Many visitors come here because it’s the starting point for the scenic train to Ella, but make sure to spend a few days exploring the bustling streets, enjoying Kandy Lake, and wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya, the nation’s biggest and most impressive botanical garden.

2. Explore Ella

If you take Sri Lanka’s most scenic train ride, you’ll end up in the town of Ella, which, though small, is a popular destination. Even if you don’t take the train to get here, the iconic Nine Arches railway bridge is one of the biggest attractions in the entire country. You can get to the lookout by hiking through the forest, and then waiting for a train to go by if you want that iconic “Sri Lankan postcard” shot. Other things to see and do here include traversing the surrounding rainforests to see stunning waterfalls, hiking Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock, and visiting the endless tea plantations.

3. Travel up north

After decades of war, the north has a legacy of destruction that has yet to go away. For that reason, most travelers focus on the southern half of Sri Lanka, with its plentiful hiking and charming beach towns. But seeing the north gave me a more nuanced perspective on a portion of the country without hordes of other tourists. In fact, in my time there, I saw only four Westerners.

As the area is mainly Hindu, you’ll find lots of beautiful temples here, including the impressive Nallur Kandaswamy in Jaffna. The north also offers beautiful yet uncrowded beaches, a plethora of tranquil islands to explore, and delicious food with a strong southern Indian influence.

4. See the temples

Sri Lanka has an astonishing number of impressive temples. Everywhere you go, there’s a beautiful temple! Some of the most famous include Temple of the Tooth (in Kandy), Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam and Gangaramaya (both in Colombo), Dambulla Cave Temple (in Dambulla), and Nallur Kandaswamy Temple (in Jaffna).

When visiting, be sure to dress appropriately, as these are active places of worship. Also, bring flip-flops to temples, since you’ll have to take your socks and shoes off before going inside. Entrance fees range from free to around $10 USD.

5. Take a cooking class

While I didn’t know much about the country’s food before arriving, I quickly became hooked on the delicious curries of Sri Lankan cuisine. Colombo Cooking Class offers three-hour sessions in which you make 10 dishes, including curries, coconut sambol, and papadam. The class takes place in the owner’s home, and it really feels like you’re learning to cook with a friend! The cost is around 20,000 LKR.

6. Hit the beaches

Since it’s a huge island, Sri Lanka’s coastline spans over 1,340 kilometers (830 miles), meaning there are countless beaches to enjoy. There are white-sand shores to stroll on, coral reefs perfect for snorkeling, picturesque sunsets to admire, and breaks great for surfing. No matter what you’re into, there’s a beach for you in Sri Lanka.

Arugam Bay and Mirissa Beach are some of the most well known, mainly as world-famous surfing destinations, but they both have nice beach towns to visit even if you don’t surf.

7. Day trip to Galle

Founded in the late 16th century by the Portuguese and later conquered by the Dutch in the mid-17th century, Galle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a beautifully preserved old fort town that’s worth a visit. A visit here is best spent just wandering around, admiring the Dutch colonial buildings, walking the perimeter of the old fort, shopping at the artisanal craft stores (or taking a workshop to learn how to make jewelry in the traditional style ), touring the National Maritime Museum, and eating fresh seafood.

But as that’s about the extent of what there is to do, I recommend visiting Galle as a day trip from Colombo rather than staying overnight. It’s super easy, as you can take the train directly, which takes about two hours.

8. Climb Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak is Sri Lanka’s most sacred mountain and an important pilgrimage destination. Hindus and Buddhists believe the mountain is the footstep of Shiva and the Buddha, respectively, while Muslims and Christians revere it as the first place Adam stepped on earth after his ousting from the Garden of Eden.

But even if you aren’t religious, trekking to the top of Adam’s Peak is a rewarding experience for both the challenge of the ascent and the magnificent views. It is a steep climb, with over 5,000 steps to get to the top, though there are many teahouses to stop at along the way. Most hikers start their climb from the village of Dalhousie around 2am in order to reach the top by sunrise. Depending on your fitness level, the entire journey takes around 5-7 hours.

9. Go whale watching

While countries like Iceland get all the press for whale watching, Sri Lanka is actually one of the best places to view these awe-inspiring creatures. Many species — including the blue whale, the largest animal on earth — migrate annually around the southern tip of the island, swimming closer to shore here than anywhere else in the world.

Mirissa Beach is the best place to depart from, and there are many operators offering tours. Be sure to go with a company that adheres to responsible international whale watching standards, which include stipulations like not getting too close, not feeding the whales, etc. I recommend Raja and the Whales, where an adult ticket is around 20,000 LKR.

10. Explore Colombo

As the country’s capital and location of its major international airport, you’ll undoubtedly be flying in and out of Colombo. This busy city is a bit of everything, with modern cafés and bistros right next to traditional Buddhist and Hindu temples. It’s worth spending a couple days here, getting your bearings and enjoying the cultural offerings.

Sri Lanka Travel Costs

A group of elephants standing in a stream in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is cheap to visit. Even when you splurge, it’s not that expensive, especially if you stick to delicious local cuisine, travel on trains and buses, and don’t go crazy with your accommodation.

Accommodation – There is a lot of cheap accommodation throughout the country (and a growing number of hostels), though they’re really basic, with just a fan, mosquito net, and shower. At 2,000-4,000 LKR per dorm bed, you can’t go wrong though. Private rooms in hostels start around 6,500 LKR.

Guesthouses are more plentiful and affordable, with private rooms that have an en-suite bathroom starting at 5,000 LKR per night. Two-star budget hotels start around 8,000 LKR. In both cases, you’ll usually get free breakfast and Wi-Fi too.

You can find some unique Airbnbs in Sri Lanka, though they tend to be pricey. Prices range from 7,000 LKR per night for tree houses and cabins to 25,000 LKR and up for villas and larger properties. Most of the midrange options on Airbnb are hotels and guesthouses.

Food – Incredibly flavorful and packed with fragrant spices, Sri Lankan food is influenced by the culture and cuisines of foreign traders from all over the world. Middle Eastern, Indian, Portuguese, and Dutch flavors are particularly common due to trading routes and the country’s colonial history.

Cinnamon and black pepper are the two most important spices, though cardamom, pandan leaf, and lemongrass feature heavily too. Sri Lankan cuisine can be quite spicy, and dozens of types of peppers are grown and used on the island.

And, as an island nation, it should come as no surprise that fresh seafood plays a major role in many Sri Lankan dishes. Maldives fish (cured tuna produced in the Maldives) is a staple flavoring element. Coconut and rice are also two ubiquitous ingredients that you’ll find on the table at every meal and part of many street snacks.

Popular dishes include various curries (including fish, crab, or lentil), biryani (meat, fish, or vegetables cooked with rice and seasoned), pittu (cylinders of rice flour mixed with grated coconut), kiribath (rice cooked in coconut milk), roti (flatbread made from wheat flour), wattalapam (rich pudding made with coconut milk, jaggery, cashews, eggs, and spices), kottu (roti, meat curry, scrambled egg, onions, and chilies, chopped together with a cleaver on a hot griddle), appam (a thin pancake made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk), lamprais (rice cooked in stock, accompanied by meatballs, and baked in a banana leaf), breudher (a Dutch holiday biscuit), and bolo fiado (Portuguese-style layer cake).

Besides being delicious, food is also really cheap here. At a casual traditional restaurant, starters and snacks like roti or dosa are 240-550 LKR, while biryani costs 450-900 (depending on the meat chosen), and a typical curry dish costs 550-950 LKR. A fast-food combo meal is 750 LKR.

At restaurants with table service or for a more “Western” meal, a pizza is 2,500-3,500 LKR, a pasta dish is 1,500-2,200, and a burger is around 1,100-1,500 LKR. At an upscale restaurant, fish or crab curry is 3,500-4,000 LKR, while a chicken or vegetable curry is 1,000-1,500 LKR.

A bottle of water is 100-150 LKR, a cappuccino is 600 LKR, and a beer is around 500-600 LKR, though don’t expect too many chances to drink alcohol. Outside the coastal touristy beach towns and the capital of Colombo, there isn’t much nightlife or opportunity to drink. While you can always crack a beer at your guesthouse, Sri Lanka isn’t home to a big drinking/nightlife culture.

Some of my favorite restaurants were Balaji Dosai and the Slightly Chilled Bar in Kandy; Ahinsa in Sigiriya; and Upali’s and the Ministry of Crab in Colombo. The last one is an expensive seafood restaurant, but the food is delicious! Sri Lankan crab is famous worldwide — and gigantic. It’s not cheap, but sometimes you just have to treat yourself.

Backpacking Sri Lanka: Suggested Budgets

On a backpacking budget of 9,700 LKR per day, you can stay in a hostel, eat cheap meals like street food (with limited drinking), use public transportation to get around, and do free activities like walking tours, hiking, and hanging out at beaches.

On a midrange budget of 18,000 LKR per day, you can stay in a guesthouse or private room in a hostel or Airbnb, eat out for most meals, drink more, take taxis to get around, and do more paid activities like museum visits or whale watching.

On an upscale budget of 35,000 LKR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel or private Airbnb, eat out pretty much anywhere you want, drink at the bar, rent a tuk-tuk or car to get around, and do as many guided tours and activities as you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in LKR.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Sri Lanka is very affordable, but there are still plenty of ways to help keep your costs low. Here are my top money-saving tips for traveling in Sri lanka:

  • Get your visa in advance – You’ll need to get a visa for entry into the country. You can do this either online starting three days before you arrive, or upon arrival. It’s slightly cheaper if you do it ahead of time, plus you’ll skip the lines at the airport.
  • Eat the local food – Outside of the major cities of Colombo and Kandy, you won’t find many non-Sri Lankan or non-Indian food options. What you do find is overpriced, subpar Western food that’s more often than not a chain. Skip it and stick to the local cuisine.
  • Bring a water bottle – You shouldn’t really drink the water in Sri Lanka. And since the weather here is really hot, you’ll need to buy a lot of bottled water to stay hydrated (you’ll probably spend 300 LKR per day on plastic bottles of water). Instead, bring a reusable water bottle with a filter instead to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as its bottles have built-in filters to ensure that your water is always clean and safe.
  • Stay with a local – Couchsurfing is a great way to save money on accommodation while also getting some insight from residents. You might have better luck in the larger cities, but be sure to request early, as they also see the most requests.
  • Visit in off or shoulder seasons – Visit during monsoon season or shoulder season to save money. Even though you will experience some rain, it doesn’t rain 24/7, and you’ll still be able to get out and explore.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka

Guesthouses are the most common and affordable option in Sri Lanka, though there is a growing number of hostels here too. Here are my recommended places to stay around the country:

  • C1 Colombo Fort (Colombo)
  • Palitha Home Stay (Sigiriya)
  • Jaye’s Home Stay (Kandy)
  • Backpacker Galle Hostel (Galle)

How to Get Around Sri Lanka

Tuk tuks and buses on a road lined with palm trees in Sri Lanka

Bus – This is the cheapest and most widely used way to get around the country, though it can be a very crowded and at times harrowing experience. There are two types of buses: red Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses that are run by the state, and blue, pink, or green buses that are run by private companies. Private buses tend to be more crowded, as there are more seats, and drivers try to cram on as many passengers as possible.

Since you’ll most likely be flying in and/or out of Colombo, the blue Colombo Express Bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get from the airport to the city center. It’s just 110 LKR (the same price as the regular bus), leaves every 30 minutes (5:30am–8:30pm), and takes about an hour. In town, it stops at (and leaves from) the Central Bus Stand, Pettah Fort, and Colombo Fort Station. Alternatively, a taxi is about 2,700 LKR.

Tuk-tuk – All throughout Sri Lanka, you can hire drivers cheaply. Any tuk-tuk driver will let you hire them for the day, for around 10,000 LKR. Moreover, they are pretty honest — except in Colombo, where they may try to scam and overcharge you. Elsewhere in the country, you’ll get a fair deal, so there’s no need to try to bargain hard.

Ridesharing – Uber is available only in Colombo and is often more expensive than taxis, especially during rush hours. PickMe is a local taxi-hailing app that you can also use to hire tuk-tuks.

Train – Train travel, while slower, is the most scenic and culturally immersive way to get around Sri Lanka (plus, the island is so small that taking an expensive short flight doesn’t make sense). Sri Lanka Railways runs all trains, and you can find schedules and make reservations on its website.

There are a variety of classes from which to choose: first, second, third, and reserved or unreserved (third class doesn’t have reserved seating and doesn’t sell out). Seat reservations can only be made up to 30 days prior to departure.

Some typical train routes and their approximate prices include the following:

  • Colombo to Jaffna (7–8 hours): 2,250 LKR
  • Jaffna to Anuradhapura (2.5–3.5 hours): 1,600 LKR
  • Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (3.5–4 hours): 2,500 LKR
  • Colombo to Galle (2 hours): 1,600 LKR

For more details on train travel in Sri Lanka, I recommend The Man in Seat 61 . It’s the best resource for train travel information.

Flying – As Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, flying domestically doesn’t make much sense. There is only one airline that even offers domestic routes (Cinnamon Air) and those are expensive, starting at 77,000 LKR for a 30-minute flight. Skip the flights.

When to Go to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is effected by two different monsoon seasons, so if you want the best weather during your trip, you’ll want to keep that in mind.

If you want to visit the beaches in the south and west, go December through March. April to September is best for visiting the north and east.

The good news is that temperatures stay fairly consistent throughout the year. Coastal regions generally have average temperatures of 25-30°C (77-86°F) while in the highlands you can expect an average of 17-19°C (63-66°F).

While there is a lot of rain during monsoon season, it doesn’t rain 24/7 so you can still enjoy the country. But no matter when you visit, make sure to bring a rain coat just in case.

Sri Lanka is a safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re a solo traveler. Violent attacks against tourists are rare. Petty theft is the most common type of crime, especially around popular tourist landmarks. Always keep your valuables out of reach on public transportation, in crowds, and at the beach, just to be safe. A little vigilance goes a long way here since most thefts are crimes of opportunity.

The main scam to watch out for is paying the “tourist tax” (elevated prices for travelers). If you’re worried about others, read this blog post about major travel scams to avoid .

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe, though verbal (and at times physical) harassment unfortunately occurs more often here than in other countries. It’s a good idea to dress conservatively and avoid walking around alone at night.

Other issues that you may encounter involve civil unrest and the current economic crisis. Stay aware of any demonstrations that may be occurring (usually in Colombo). While they are generally peaceful, like anywhere, there is the potential for these protests becoming violent. Steer clear to avoid getting caught in the middle.

Also be aware that shortages of supplies are common, and fuel is currently being rationed. If you need medications, bring a full supply with you.

Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

If you do experience an emergency, dial 119.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. It protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancelations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong unexpectedly. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Sri Lanka also operates a low-cost airline called the Mihin Lanka which operates through Indian and Central Asian routes.

If you want to take a luxurious and adventurous journey, then the most-used method of transport is the regular ferry service. It runs between the Talaimannar Port and Rameshwaram Port, which is basically a distance of nearly 50 km. While Dhanushkodi is the furthest town of India, Mannar Island is the connecting island between India and Sri Lanka. The Talaimannar port as well as railway station are a part of Mannar Island.

Although, not a permanent route and indeed a very dangerous mode of travel between India and Sri Lanka is the rail. Not many trains run through the track located on the sea. Otherwise popular as the Pamban Bridge, it was built around 100 years ago.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

As an avid traveler and outdoor enthusiast, I’m always looking for destinations that have a lot of opportunities to be active. Hiking, biking, kayaking, rafting, scuba diving — I do it all and I love it all. So, when I heard that Intrepid Travel was offering a hiking, biking, kayaking Sri Lanka trip, I signed up immediately, and quickly started putting together a packing list .

Since each activity required its own gear, I had to put a lot of thought into what I brought on the three-week-long adventure. And, because I’d prefer to not be hauling around multiple massive suitcases, I always travel light with items that work well across multiple activities — say, leggings that are great for both hiking and biking , a poolside cover-up that doubles as an everyday shirt or dress, and hiking sneakers that could be worn from the trail to the city streets . I also had to take Sri Lanka's wonderfully warm climate into account (luckily, I was visiting during the dry season, but I knew rain was still possible); this meant that I'd need clothing that was moisture-wicking, cooling, and quick-drying .

Whether you’re heading to Mexico, Morocco, or Machu Picchu (or you’re lucky enough to visit Sri Lanka), here’s what you’ll need for your next active trip this spring or summer. This foolproof packing list will keep you comfortable, dry, and safe on the trails, roads, and rivers so you can focus on having fun.

Arc’Teryx Women’s Beta LT Jacket

I will be the first to admit that this is one crazy expensive jacket, but having worn it on hundreds of miles of hikes over the past year, I’ll add that it is 100 percent worth the price. The beauty of this jacket is that it is ultralight and breathable, so you can wear it during hot and humid hikes in Sri Lanka (which I did). But, it comes equally in handy for cold-weather hikes and snowshoe treks in Yellowstone (which I also did) when layered over fleece. Instead of stuffing your closets with multiple jackets to wear at different times of year, you just need this one awesome jacket.

Typically, the more waterproof a jacket is, the heavier and less breathable it is, but Arc’Teryx has managed to make this insanely lightweight jacket 100 percent waterproof, which is why the price is higher than lesser-quality jackets. This way, you stay dry without totally overheating and sweating. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof, and I was very grateful that this jacket is fully waterproof , as it got me through several rainy days in Sri Lanka in February and also a wet and wild 96-mile hike in the Scottish Highlands last summer. I also used it for biking, kayaking, rafting, and walking around town. It might not ever need to buy another jacket again — it’s that good.

Matador Beast 18 Technical Pack

Though the pack is called “technical” — and this definitely is a technical pack — don’t let the name fool you; you don’t have to be a super technical hiker trekking through the backwoods to appreciate this pack. Yes, it has all of the convenient features that you need for a hiking pack, such as plenty of pockets, water bottle sleeves, and straps to attach your hiking poles, but this also shines as a good everyday pack. I do use it for hiking, but I’ve also used it for biking since it also doubles as an excellent day bag. I wore it nearly every single day during my three weeks in Sri Lanka while touring cities and hauling my stuff to the beaches along the southern coast.

What's more, the bag has a waterproof coating, it’s super light, and it folds down when it's not in use, so you can seamlessly fit it into your luggage and then whip it out when you arrive (I also sometimes use it as my carry-on bag to save even more suitcase space).

Smartwool Classic All-season Merino T-shirt

Merino wool is great because it is soft, durable, comfortable and it can be worn in any temperature or season. It wicks away moisture and dries quickly, which keeps you dry and cool in the summer and dry and warm in the winter. I’ve worn this shirt on hot and sweaty hikes in Tucson and Mesa, Arizona, and through chilly fall hikes in New York’s Adirondacks. This shirt was easy to wash in a hotel sink and it dried super fast, so I was able to wash and re-wear it several times in Sri Lanka.

Not all wool is ethically or sustainably sourced, so I appreciate that Smartwool uses ZQ-certified wool to ensure responsible sourcing. I also love that Smartwool is one of few outdoor brands that has truly inclusive sizing, with many of their tops and bottoms going up to a 4XL.

Smartwool Active Women’s Leggings

The name of this product perfectly describes it, as these are leggings made of wool and intended for active women. Hello, that’s me! I’ve been wearing these leggings for about a year and a half and they’ve gone all over the world with me while hiking, biking, kayaking, dancing, relaxing, and even lounging on river cruises. Like the previously mentioned Smartwool T-shirt, these leggings are also made from high-tech wool to keep you cool, wick away moisture, and dry quickly. They can also be worn year-round, regardless of the weather or temperature.

The side drop-in pockets are perfect for holding your phone or hotel key card, and there’s also a hidden interior waist pocket where you can hide money and credit cards. Though these are designed for “active” activities, because they are slim-fitted, pretty, and available in solid colors (I have the all-black pair), they can easily be worn with a cute top for going out to dinner or walking around town. This way, I can get multiple uses out of a single pair of pants, which is also easy to rewash in the sink and hang dry overnight to rewear the next day.

Outdoor Vitals Altitude Sun Hoodie

I got this lightweight, long-sleeve “sun hoodie” two years ago for a two-week-long summer rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, and it’s still one of my favorite tops for all sorts of adventure travel. Not only is the sweatshirt rated to protect your skin against high-altitude sun, but thanks to the hood, it provides protection for your ears and neck — two areas that often get a ton of sun exposure but less attention when it comes to sunscreen application. The shirt is so light that it almost feels like wearing nothing and it dries super quickly, so it was my go-to for kayaking in Sri Lanka. I also wore it for a 25-mile bike ride through tea plantations and as a cover-up while reading at the beach.

OtterBox Symmetry Series Phone Case

When you're always on the move, you need to make sure that every part of your travel repertoire is durable — even your phone case. I prefer sleek, thin cases that offer an extra layer of defense should my phone fall out of my pocket while I'm hiking or biking, which is why I'm a fan of OtterBox's stylishly protective Symmetry cases. They provide excellent drop protection, are compatible with MagSafe charging pads, and come in a ton of fun colors and prints.

The cases have raised edges to help protect the camera, but I also use this OtterBox antimicrobial screen protector for even more coverage. This combo worked well for me on the Sri Lanka trip (and for everyday life in New York City) because the case is thin enough to fit in my hip pouch and prevents scratches, cracks, and other drop-related damage. If you need even more protection, opt for the OtterBox Defender case , which is a bit thicker and even more rugged.

Darn Tough Lightweight Hiking Socks

Even in the best hiking shoes or boots, your feet can get sweaty and prone to blisters if you’re not wearing good socks. While you certainly can hike in the everyday cotton socks that many of us wear at home, they don’t breathe or have grip, so your feet may sweat and slide around in your shoes. Darn Tough socks are super comfortable, ultra-lightweight, made in the USA. and they come in various weights, colors, prints, and styles (no-show, ankle, crew, and knee-high). For this trip, I wore the low-cut version for cycling and walking around town, and the crew version when hiking to offer a bit more protection from plants and bugs.

Sawyer Stay-Put Sunscreen and Insect Repellent

Speaking of bugs, this two-for-one deal ensures that your insect repellent and SPF needs are covered. It’s important to wear sunscreen on vacation regardless of where you go and what you do, but it’s especially important when you’ll be active outside in the sun for many hours. Even some of the best everyday sunscreens don’t cut it when you’re hiking, biking, and kayaking because they might sweat off before you’ve even gotten started. I love the Sawyer Stay-Put Sunscreen because it does just that — it stays put .

I have sensitive skin, so I always apply a fancy-pants facial sunscreen from my aesthetician in the morning. But when I’m traveling, I often wind up re-applying later in the day with Sawyer's Stay-Put formula so I’m not carrying around multiple types of sunscreen during the day. I’m happy to report that I’ve never had issues with my skin breaking out as a result. This combo bundle also includes their picaridin insect repellent, which I also love because it is safer and more effective than the gross-smelling DEET sprays and lotions a lot of us grew up with. I didn’t actually encounter many mosquitos in Sri Lanka, but I was still glad to have repellent with me.

Altra Lone Peak 8 Trail Running Shoes

Hands down, these are my favorite shoes in the world. Technically, they are trail running shoes, but I never run; I only use them for walking and hiking. This is the newest version of the shoe, which I started wearing a few months ago, but I’ve worn an earlier version of this shoe nearly every day for the last two years. The extra-wide toe boxes and sticky soles make them super comfy and provide a non-slip grip that was perfect for the dry, wet, and rocky trails in Sri Lanka. I also wore them for walking around the streets of capital city Colombo and while visiting tea plantations and spice gardens. Depending on the trip, these could easily be the only shoes that you'll need to pack.

Keen Rose Active Sandals

Even though this was an active trip, I didn’t want my feet to be stuck in hiking shoes every day, so I also brought my trusty Keen hiking sandals. Keen is known for making really rugged hiking boots, shoes, and sandals that offer great grip, comfort, and support, and I love these sandals because they’re a bit softer, lighter, and prettier than traditional hiking sandals. While I do wear them for light hiking, I especially love them on multi-activity trips because they’re cute enough to be worn with dresses, skirts, or leggings and blouses. In Sri Lanka, I wore them to hike up Mini Adam’s Peak in the tea town of Ella, to visit Buddhist temples in Kandy, and during my tuk tuk tour in Colombo.

Hydro Flask Lightweight Trail Series Water Bottle

This has been my main go-to water bottle for the last two years because it’s ultra-rugged and insulated, but also impressively lightweight. While an insulated water bottle wasn’t completely necessary for this trip, I loved carrying it with me because it was more refreshing to drink cool water during a 90-degree bike ride than it was to drink stale water that had been heating up in plastic all day. I usually stuff the bottle into the side pocket of my daypack, but because it has a sturdy handle, I used a carabiner to clip it onto my kayak or raft. And while I mostly filled this bottle with cool water for hiking, biking, kayaking, beach-going, and walking tours in Sri Lanka, I filled it with hot tea for my long-haul flights to-from the country. This bottle is not cheap, but it lasts forever (I’ve literally taken it on hundreds of miles of hikes).

Grayl GeoPress Water Filter Bottle

I refuse to buy bottled water anywhere in the world because the discarded bottles are devastating to the environment, particularly in countries that lack adequate recycling facilities. I haven’t bought bottled water in over six years, and that’s precisely because I always carry this Grayl GeoPress Water Filter Bottle with me. I’ve used it to filter and drink water from rivers, streams, lakes, and waterfalls around the world, and I also used it to filter the water in my hotels in Sri Lanka. There are newer models of the Grayl filter available, but this is the one that I use; it’s fantastic with its convenient drinking spout. I usually use it to filter the water and then pour it into my insulated canteen to carry during the day.

Bajío Eldora Sunglasses

I have a few pairs of sunglasses on rotation, but for active trips, I always opt for higher-end polarized frames like these sunnies from Bajío. Why? Because they are more comfortable, they block out more sun, and they stay put on my face without adding a ton of extra weight or making me overheat. Polarized glasses are designed for people who spend a lot of time outside, especially doing activities around water and snow, which produce a lot of glare. While I’ve worn these glasses on plenty of snow hikes in Wyoming, Wisconsin, and upstate New York, they also worked beautifully for hiking, biking, and kayaking in Sri Lanka.

They were especially important for the kayaking trip and a separate whale watching boat tour that I did because the sun’s glare off the water was so intense. I’m also a big fan of Bajío sunglasses because there are hundreds of combinations of frames and lenses. The brand also offers unique frame shapes and pretty frame and lens colors — like these stylish hot pink frames with bright blue, pink, or purple polarized lenses.

Catherine Dress Mini Cover-up

Even though the focus of my trip to Sri Lanka was hiking, biking, and kayaking, I also spent a couple of nights at the beach and there were great pools at a lot of the hotels. Swimsuit cover-ups are handy anywhere in the world, but they are especially important in more conservative countries like Sri Lanka, where it’s not exactly polite to run around with your butt hanging out. Do some travelers do it? Yes. Do the locals appreciate it? No. I love this cover-up dress by Catherine because it works as a swimsuit cover-up at the pool and beach, but it also doubles as a cute top when paired with jeans (or my aforementioned Smartwool leggings).
