Sardinia Tour Highlights:

  • Visit key locations in Sardinia such as Cagliari, Alghero, Oristano, Bosa, Orgosolo, Cabras and Nora.
  • See and understand how the mix of populations in Sardinia has produced a very specific influence on the island, from the early Phoenician dominance, right through to the more recent Catalan influences in the north west.
  • Experience cultural aspects that are unique to Sardinia – distinctive ‘canto tenore’ singing that is so different to musical styles found on mainland Italy; the Orgosolo murals representing the 20th century protest movement; the vibrant San Benedetto markets.
  • Our Sardinia tour has a culinary focus - during your week we’ll taste a wide range of fare, from the pasticcerias, the local breads, and meals that are specifically Sardinian, such as fregula (a couscous-like pasta) and pane frattau. You will notice a fusion of Spanish and Mediterranean influences in the cuisine.
  • Visit ancient sites and discoveries, such as the Roman port town of Nora, the Iron Age statues “the giants of Mont’e Prama”, and the Bronze Age nuraghi stone fortresses at Su Nuraxu-Borromini.

ACCOMMODATION

We use good quality 4 star rated hotels located in Cagliari, Oristano and Alghero.

In Cagliari we stay in the historic central area in the Hotel Regina Margherita. The hotel is a modern, well presented establishment with a good restaurant and cocktail bar.

In Oristano we stay in a boutique hotel, the Hotel Duomo. This has many interesting features and you’ll love the lounge areas where you can relax and chat in the evenings.

Near Alghero we stay in either the Hotel Catalunya or the Hotel Punta Negra looking out over the coast – a fine way to end your week in Sardinia.

Some reviews of our tours:

“I only really wanted to feedback how much my sister and I had enjoyed being part of the Italy with Pleasure October 2022 small group tour in Sardinia. It was the first time either of us had visited the island and the tour certainly gave us a good introduction to its history and culture, in addition to seeing a lot of the countryside whilst being driven on the tour minibus. We much appreciated the informative Sardinia Tour 2022 booklet given to us at the introductory meeting with Marco, our guide for the week, as well as the other printed handouts given out during our visits. We were fortunate in having a beautiful warm sunny week for our visit - ideal sightseeing weather - and also fortunate that the summer crowds had mostly disappeared so that we often had the archaeological sites to ourselves. We enjoyed all of the visits and also having some free time most evenings to explore our new surroundings; Marco, our guide, was always on hand to give suggestions of things to do or places to eat and to make sure that no member of the group was ever excluded. Whilst it was my first time in Sardinia, I hope it will not be my last, and I have no hesitation in recommending a trip with Italy with Pleasure.”

“The tour was absolutely fabulous. I was able to see and experience things that created once in a lifetime memories. Riccardo was phenomenal. He made sure that our trip was perfect. Any question or request we had, he worked hard to answer/meet. He was so upbeat and fun while dealing with all of our varied personalities! Thanks again for a trip of a life!”

“Everything was perfect! They packaged the hotel, all meals, daily tours to a variety of very special and interesting sites, and handled all of the myriad of details seamlessly. The agency is very customer-service focused and was a pleasure to work with.”

“The tour was terrific as was the hotel accommodation, and Andy was the best! It was well organized and we didn’t skip a beat. That last night at the farmhouse was memorable and the perfect send-off. The tour guides in each of the cities we visited were well informed and did a great job explaining what we were seeing. I highly recommended Italy With Pleasure to people I know that might be interested in travel to Italy. The small group size, and in our tour, Andy, is what makes it happen.”

Day 1:  Buongiorno Sardinia - exploring Cagliari

Welcome to Sardinia, over this week you’ll start to uncover what makes this island special – fiercely independent, wonderful natural environments, unique historical sites, and a cuisine that is specifically ‘sarda’.

We start the tour in our centrally located hotel, right in the historic area of Cagliari.

Together we look through the Castello area, the oldest part of the city, located within the 14th century fortified walls and hemmed in by cliffs on either side. The history of invaders here, through the millennia, makes it understandable that people would live in this tightly packed district up on the hill.

We take a break back in the hotel, then meet and walk together to the Marina area. Here we share our first meal. The Sardinian cuisine is distinctly different from the Italian food that most of us know, the result of diverse influences.

The land where they raise their sheep and their fantastic pecorino cheese. The sea that has brought invaders and settlers to these shores, and the culinary traditions that have been absorbed and made their own. The breads such as carasau – wheat has been grown here since ancient Roman times, a local greeting is “saludi e trigu” (“good health and wheat”). Pasta that you don’t find in the rest of Italy, such as fregula (similar to couscous) and culurgionis (a type of ravioli). Through this week we will try all these foods and many more. We have an enjoyable start tonight.

Day 2: Nora Archaeological

In the morning we first drive a short distance to a viewpoint over the city, where you get another perspective on aspects of Cagliari.

We see the different wetlands that surround Cagliari, used for many centuries as salt pans.

We then leave the city and travel along the southern coastline to a place called Nora. This has a long history, from starting as a Phoenician settlement in the 8th century BC, then becoming a Roman town and port. It is the Roman town that we see today - the remains of what were elegant villas by the sea complete with detailed mosaic floors and ancient Roman roads.

Lunch is in the town of Pula.

In the afternoon we visit a place called Tuvixeddu. This is a necropolis, or burial area, used first by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC.

This is the largest Punic burial site, comprised of 1000 "well tombs" and reveals this cultures' belief in the afterlife.

We arrive back in Cagliari in the late afternoon.

Cagliari, Sardinia small group tours of Italy

Day 3 - Nuraghic Bronze Age Sites - Su Nuraxi

We first visit the San Benedetto markets. This is the key point for the trade of all types of fresh food for the city – some of which you’ll be tempted by, some that is a bit more challenging. In these markets you see how the locals shop, what they buy, what is fresh, and what is caught in this part of the Mediterranean sea.

Next we go further back in time, yesterday’s ancient Roman town being just an introduction. Our focus today is on the Nuraghic civilisation, a Bronze Age population that lived on Sardinia. They have left some impressive markers of their presence here. Firstly we see a nuraghi, a fortified structure with almost a beehive shape, built of basalt blocks. The nuraghi that we visit in Barumini is called Su Nuraxu and is the largest of these ancient fortresses. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The original settlement dates from 1500 BC, with constant habitation for over 2000 years. This is a physical timeline of Sardinia.

After lunch in a charming agriturismo nearby we continue on to another Bronze Age site. This is known as the ‘tomb of the giants’, or locally as ‘Sa Domu and S’Orcu’. This is like nothing else that you see in Italy - the size of the stone blocks, the fascinating shape, and also just the simplicity and scale of the structure situated up on a hilltop as a monument to a forgotten time. The tomb, as well as its burial function, may have been dedicated to the god Taurus.

We continue on to our hotel in the town of Oristano, arriving in the early evening.

Nuraghi Sardinia small group tours of Italy

Day 4 - Giants of Mont’e Prama – Santa Cristina

From our base in Oristano we have a wealth of things to see and do in close proximity on the Sinis Peninsula. Firstly we visit the village of San Salvatore. The village itself is unlike any other town in Sardinia, with its narrow lanes lined with rows of tiny houses - in fact it has been used many times as a film set for these reasons.

We then view the ancient site of Tharros. Situated on a peninsula, this has been a prized location since Phoenician times.

Moving on to the archaeological museum in the town of Cabras, we see the statues known as the ‘giants of Mont’e Prama’. These recently found monolithic artifacts, carved in the Iron Age (900 BC), are unlike anything that you normally associate with Italian history. They were found in this area. Also in this museum we see many of the Punic and Roman items found in the nearby archaeological area of Tharros.

After a seaside lunch, we travel to the village of Santa Cristina. Here we find a sacred well, over 3000 years old and incredible for the precision of its construction. The feeling of this being a sacred place is pervasive, and we marvel at how the structure is aligned with celestial bodies.

The village of San Salvatore Sardinia Italy

Day 5: Orgosolo Murals – Canto Tenore Singing

As a contrast to yesterday’s coastal jaunt, today we head inland, into the mountainous interior. First we visit the town of Orgosolo. This is the key mural town of Sardinia, with numerous building painted with local scenes, slogans, and an incredible variety of weird and wonderful things. We look around the town centre with a local guide. Learning about Orgosolo and the history of these murals reveals much about the more recent history of Sardinia, and the challenges and aspirations of the people who live here.

For lunch we visit one of the large forest parks that cover much of this central area, the Supramonte. We dine on the traditional foods cooked on an open grill, enjoyed outdoors in a casual setting.

After lunch we have a very special performance of ‘canto tenore‘ - most visitors to Sardinia do not get to experience this local polyphonic singing method. Canto tenore consists of three men singing together with different tones, creating a curious effect, while a fourth sings or chants a poem. This type of singing is specific to this Barbagia region of Sardinia and is recognised by UNESCO with its inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

During the afternoon we reach our final destination, Alghero.

Orgosolo Murals - Sardinia small group tours Italy

Day 6: Alghero

In the morning we walk together through the historic centre of Alghero, looking at the aspects that make this such a fascinating city.

Alghero has a culture that is distinctly different from the rest of Sardinia. The key influences here are Spanish, following the conquering of the city by the Aragonese in the 14th century. The local dialect is closely related to Catalan. The old town has a superb seaside location, and much to discover. We leave you some free time to wander the lanes of the town or to enjoy the waterfront cafes.

The cuisine here is also heavily influenced by the Spanish, with paella being the signature dish.

The old town has a superb seaside location, and much to discover. There are numerous cafes along the walls and bastions of the old town, where we can enjoy a coffee looking out to sea.

Next we travel to a Bombarde beach. Sardinia is famed for its turquoise clear waters and great beaches, and we give you some time to relax on the beach, have a swim or just take it easy in the cafe nearby. Those that prefer not to have beach time will be dropped back to the hotel.

In the evening we cap off the week with ‘the last supper’, our final Sardinian meal together.

Day 7 - Arrivederci

As we have now reached the end of our tour, we drop off at Alghero’s airport nearby and bid you “buon viaggio”.

Sardinia is around 162 miles long and lies 116 miles from mainland Italy

There are many representatives of the villages of Sardinia, walking about 50 km from Cagliari to Pula in traditional clothes to celebrate Sant’Efisio, who is a saint patron of the island.
  • Try one of the water sports! One of the most popular things to do in Sardinia is surfing. Also, you can try to windsurf and kitesurf
  • Try local food specialties such as fregola con le arselle, which is couscous with tomato and clams sauce, or bottarga, and a fish roe sometimes sprinkled on pasta and other dishes. Sardinia Revealed

How to Get to Sardinia From Rome – An Easy Guide

There are only two ways to get to Sardinia from Rome: by plane or ferry. Both ways are very easy whether you are using public transport or driving your own car. You can reach Sardinia from many cities in Italy and Europe , but Rome is probably the place that’s better connected to the island.

In this guide, you will find out how to get to Sardinia from Rome, all the options, the landing ports, and also the various departure ports.

A cool and offbeat destination, I certainly suggest including Sardinia in your Italy vacation . If you are staying in Italy for less than 2 weeks and quite short in time, you might want to reach Sardinia by plane because much faster.

On the other hand, if you already have a car from Rome, you can decide to spend the night on the ferry, saving even on the hotel, and arrive the day after. Since to move around Sardinia your best bet is by car , this way, you are already set and can start exploring straight away.

How to travel to Sardinia from Rome by plane

You can book a flight from Sardinia from both Rome airports, Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino (FCO) and Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport in Ciampino (CIA).

In Sardinia, there are three airports: Cagliari Elmas (CAG), Olbia-Costa Smeralda (OLB), and Alghero (AHO) for the northern and western coast.

Cagliari is the ideal landing port to visit the south and the center of the island and reach destinations such as the Nora archaeological site, San Pietro and Sant’Antioco islands , the museum of sounding stones of sculptor Pinuccio Sciola , the mining villages and ghost towns around Carbonia, and beautiful beaches like Villasimius, Chia, and Costa Rei. From Cagliari, you can also reach Oristano city and province to see places like Cabras, the Sinis Peninsula, and Seneghe .

Olbia is where you should land to explore La Maddalena archipelago, the Emerald Coast, the stunning beaches of the Gulf of Orosei, and lovely Sardinian towns like Dorgali, Nuoro, and Orgosolo.

You should plan your arrival to Alghero if you are aiming at Sardinia’s northern and western coast to visit destinations like the beautiful cities of Sassari and Castelsardo, to reach the island of L’Asinara, the town of Bosa, the little beach of S’Archittu , the tiny village of Tinnura for its fantastic street art, and obviously the sunny city of Alghero itself.

By plane, it will take you between an hour and an hour and a half to reach Sardinia from Rome.

Depending on the airline, flights will take off from either airport and land in one of the three airports in Sardinia. Check out Omio’s website to see flight schedules and routes.

Image: Cagliari port where you arrive in Sardinia from Civitavecchia by ferry.

Flights from Rome to Cagliari

If you want to land in Cagliari, you will find five flights daily from Fiumicino served by the Italian flag carrier Ita Airways. From Ciampino airport to Cagliari, there are only flights operated by Ryanair low-cost airline, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The flight from both Rome airports and Cagliari takes about an hour.

Flights from Rome to Olbia

You can fly to Olbia from both of Rome’s airports. From Ciampino, you will mainly find the planes of low-cost airline Wizz Air, while from Fiumicino, the airlines that take off for the Olbia-Costa Smeralda airports are Aeroitalia and Volotea.

From both Ciampino and Fiumicino, it takes about an hour to fly to Olbia.

Flights from Rome to Alghero

The flights to Alghero’s Fertilia airports take off from Fiumicino and are served by Aeroitalia and Danish aircraft operator Flexflight. The journey takes an hour and 15 minutes and there are seven daily flights from Rome to Alghero.

How to get to Sardinia from Rome by ferry

If you are still wondering how to get to Sardinia from Rome, by ferry is one of the most common ways, especially if you are traveling by car or by RV.

The only port near Rome where you can take a ferry to Sardinia is Civitavecchia. The other closest ports that connect to the island are Livorno (to Olbia and Golfo Aranci) and Naples (to Cagliari).

If you have a car rental from Rome , it’s a good idea to keep it also for your Sardinia trip because public transport on the island is not extra efficient. Getting to Sardinia by ferry is easy and there are a few ports you can opt for: Olbia, Cagliari, Porto Torres, and Arbatax.

Porto Torres is in north Sardinia near Alghero so it’s a perfect port if you want to visit that area and also important sights of the Sassari province such as the archaeological site of Monte d’Accoddi and towns like Sedilo and Ghilarza in the Guilcer area of the Oristano province.

You would land in Arbatax mainly in the good season to enjoy the beaches of Sardinia’s eastern coast and the Gulf of Orosei.

Companies, routes, and schedules vary often depending on the month and the season. You can use the form below to check out what ferries depart from Rome to Sardinia and when.

Ferry from Rome to Olbia

The ferry route from Civitavecchia to Olbia is very popular because it’s the shortest, quickest, and lands near some of Sardinia’s most famous destinations . It is mainly run by Tirrenia and it takes around 8 hours, with the ferry departing at 10 pm and docking at 6 am in Olbia’s port.

Due to the high demand, during the peak season, also Grimaldi and GNV operate this route a few times a week. All year round, however, only Tirrenia does it once a day at night.

In summer, you will find also fast daytime ferries from Civitavecchia to Olbia that take between 5 to 6 hours. For these trips, hydrofoil-type of vessels are used and since they don’t have a large part underwater while they run, they are less stable than those used at night. This is why they are only used if the sea is not rough.

Image: Golfo Aranci port near Olbia.

Ferry from Rome to Cagliari

Another frequently-booked route used to be the ferry from Civitavecchia’s port to Cagliari. In recent times, though, I noticed that there are always fewer ferries operating this route to get from Rome to Sardinia.

Taking 15 hours, it’s the longest ferry route. It’s currently run only by Grimaldi. The normal route takes 13 hours, but it’s now 15 hours because it always makes the stop in Arbatax at 5 am before carrying on to Cagliari.

Ferry from Rome to Porto Torres

The ferry from Civitavecchia to Porto Torres takes around 7 hours to arrive and is run mainly by Grimaldi all year round.

How to get to Civitavecchia port from Rome

There are several trains from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia train station every day. The ride is one hour and 15 to 20 minutes and the ticket costs €4,60. Once you get to Civitavecchia train station, you can either walk to the port or take the local shuttle bus.

By taxi is the easiest solution. From Rome or Fiumicino airport, a cab ride to Civitavecchia port costs around 120€.

If you are driving in Rome , you will reach Civitavecchia in about an hour. You need to take the A90 GRA ring road highway, merge into the A12/E80 toll highway, and follow the signs to the port.

How to get around Sardinia once you land

From cagliari’s airport.

From the airport of Cagliari-Elmas, you can take a bus to different parts of Sardinia, a shuttle bus to Cagliari’s city center and main train station, and a train to other provinces and cities.

From Olbia’s airport

From Olbia’s airport, there are buses such as 02 and 10 that take passengers to the city center from where you can take the train to the rest of the island.

From Alghero’s airport

Once you land at Alghero’s airport, you can reach the city center and other cities in Sardinia including Sassari and Bosa, via local public transport. The airport is 10 km from Alghero’s city center and by taxi, it takes around 15 minutes.

From Cagliari’s port

The port of Cagliari is in the city center right in front of the city’s main train station that you can reach with an easy walk.

From Olbia’s port

From the port of Olbia, you can reach the city’s train station by bus n.9. From the main train station there are several trains daily to the other provinces in Sardinia.

When was the last time you broke bread with a shepherd? Were you sitting at a stone table in his garden, a Sardinian breeze rustling the leaves, with a corkwood plate of his homemade specialties? It's a simple and simply remarkable event, just one of many we'll arrange for you in this amazing week of Mediterranean adventure. Travel between the isles of Sardinia and Corsica and you'll only venture eight miles…but they're worlds apart. Corsica—part of France, but defiantly non-French—is blanketed in fragrant herbs and dotted with quaint villages. Sardinia seeks adventure. Travel through the island and see how it's more rustic, mysterious; with a few thousand years of Phoenician, Spanish and Italian blood in its veins. Together, these two gorgeous islands are some of the least-touristed spots in Europe. When you leave behind the yacht-studded harbors for the mountains, pastures and vineyards of the interior, you have the rarest of privileges—to see and experience countryside and culture that seem to have stood still in time.

• Wander the quiet, pedestrian-only streets of Alghero, then enjoy an authentic cooking class with locally-caught seafood

Why Choose Classic Journeys

Travel + Leisure has awarded Classic Journeys the #1 World’s Best Tour Operator multiple times and says, "Classic Journeys provides unbeatable access to experiences around the globe." Here’s what that access means for you.

  • Experience the world on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region.
  • Exceptional full-time local guides who become your well-connected friend. Our amazing guides are with you throughout each day of the tour, share their lifelong connections as well as engaging anecdotes about the history and culture of the region.
  • Small groups that provide you unrivaled access. An average of fewer than 10 guests per departure means we can offer you special access to sites like Stonehenge so you experience the stone circle when it’s closed to the general public, a guided visit to Zion Narrows that other companies cannot arrange because of larger group sizes, and vineyard walks with a count and countess in Tuscany.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in the region you’re exploring, including rainforest lodges, 16th century villas, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From gourmet picnics to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know our walking tour regions more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Sustainable travel that supports the places you’re visiting. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.
