Making the MOST out of visiting the zoo on a school trip

An amazing learning experience.

Safety of course is our priority, and we’ve put lots of measures in place to ensure there’s social distancing around the zoo, but that doesn’t mean that a school visit can’t bring learning to life, be playful, and support everyone’s wellbeing.

Whether it’s watching the elephants playing in the water, hearing the lion ROAR, or finding out which animal is the smelliest (tapirs are pretty stinky !)…nothing brings learning about animals to life as much as seeing them here at Chester Zoo.

Students will learn lots by watching animals and reading some of the signs around the zoo. There’s so much to learn about! Here are our top tips for turning a school visit to the zoo into a learning adventure.

BEFORE YOUR SCHOOL TRIP

Why not find out more about some of the animals you might see during your visit. Our selection of animal fact files and keeper talks are a great place to start.

Take a look at our: Animal Fact Files

Explore our: Keeper Talks

Did your students like the keeper talks? Students could do research and write their own animal talk and as we’re currently not doing our usual animal talks, they  could even have a go at giving their talk when they are at the zoo!

Try to: Create an Animal Talk

YOU’RE GOING TO THE ZOO, ZOO, ZOO…

Being stuck inside during lockdown has been hard for many pupils, and it’s great that we can now go outside. With over 128 acres of safe OUTDOOR SPACE in the zoo, there’s lots to explore! We also have over 35,000 amazing animals to see! Get familiar with our site using our new interactive map where you can explore some of our animal habitats in 360!

Why not take your class on an adventure to the rainforests in some of our indoor spaces such as Realm of the Red Ape , Spirit of the Jaguar , the Tropical Realm or Monsoon forest (reopening soon). In these spaces your students will experience the hot and humid rainforest and they’ll see, hear and smell some of the amazing animals that live there.

To help your students collect some great animal facts during your class visit, why not get them to do our explorer trail?

Please make sure to keep in groups of no more than 10 in the zoo, and ensure you keep a 2 metre distance from other people in the zoo on the day of your trip! Students over 11 will need to wear face coverings indoors unless they are exempt. Find out more information about visiting us safely, here.

Lots of schools like to take advantage of our really popular workshops which span across all year groups and subjects. Explore what we have on offer here: In Zoo Workshops

HAPPY AND HEALTHY MINDS

Play is serious business at Chester Zoo. We’ve been working hard to make the zoo as playful a possible.

Playing outdoors can increase a child’s connection to nature, and a connection to nature increases the chance that a child will want to protect the natural world. We also know that children who have played are more likely to meaningfully engage in education activities – including those that teach them about conservation!

We’ve designed an activity sheet to give teachers lots of inspiration for playful activities and challenges to complete during a school trip to the zoo .

Download our: Playful Adventures at Chester Zoo

Play and learning can both contribute to our wellbeing. Connecting with nature is proven to support human wellbeing and w alking around the zoo is also great for keeping active.

Our mindfulness trail is also full of ideas to make your class trip a little more wellbeing focused, as well as lots of fun.

Another great activity for healthy minds is a bit of mindful colouring.

5 Educational Benefits of Zoos and Why Your Kids Should Be Visiting

Kid zoo, educational benefits of kids at zoos

Have you ever stopped to think about all the educational benefits of zoos? Sure, we bring our kids to the zoo for something to do, to engage them with wildlife, and to soak up a nice day, but how does it resonate with them?

According to a leading Zoo Association, an estimated 183 million people visit an accredited zoo every year, 69% of which are made up of groups or parties that include children.

That statistic is probably not surprising to you, as zoos have always been a great day out for families, couples, and friends alike.

Think back to your last visit to the zoo.

What did your kids spend most of the day doing?

Was it asking questions by any chance?

As well as running around in a state of frenzied excitement, the most common activity that kids carry out at the zoo is asking questions. This is because there are simply so many brand new sights, sounds, and yes, even smells for them to explore at the zoo.

The educational benefits of zoos, and having a fun family day exploring, do not end with an inquisitive response. In fact, there are many more ways in which a day out at the zoo can help your children develop a wide range of key skills that are vital for their overall development.

From improving their speech and language skills to allowing them to explore their senses, keep reading to discover the top five educational benefits of visiting the zoo with your kids.

boy and chick

Increased Environmental Awareness

Unfortunately, many children nowadays are not overly connected or engaged with the natural world around them.

A massive surge in the use of modern technologies has left many kids glued to a screen for more than seven hours a day, with little thought or understanding of the environment.

However, when you visit a zoo with your kids, they have the opportunity to disconnect from screens entirely and learn about conservation efforts and the importance of looking after the planet’s wildlife.

While this may not be considered one of the educational benefits of zoos, I’d argue that it certainly creates an opportunity to engage their critical thinking skills which is a foundational learning tool.

Which zoo should you choose?

If you’re fortunate enough to have options when it comes to the zoos in your area, there are some considerations.

When choosing which zoo to visit with your family, it is a good idea to find one that not only helps with global conservation but one that also ensures that the environment they provide their animals with mimics that of their natural habitat.

A zoo that aids with global conservation will in turn build awareness around environmental crisis and how we all play a role in its conservation. This may possibly be one of the most important educational benefits of zoos.

children and polar bear, educational benefits of zoos

You may not think to associate language development with the zoo, but believe it or not, improved language development is another one of the great educational benefits of zoos.

As you walk around the zoo with your children and they start to ask questions about the animals such as what they are, where they live, and what they eat.

With these questions come answers.

Kids are much more likely to be exposed to a lot of new words and concepts which will help enhance their language skills.

Use the zoo’s informational signage and graphics to help you read and explain key points to them.

Try to encourage them to repeat these new words and phrases and make sure that they understand what it is they are saying, as well as ensure that you identify every animal that you pass to increase their vocabulary further.

The Opportunity for Hands-on Learning

Another one of the educational benefits of zoos is the opportunity for hands-on learning. When kids are young, they really can absorb so much knowledge by seeing and touching what they are learning about.

If you have a child, or children, who prefer a more hands-on learning experience rather than simply reading the information posts as they walk around, look out for zoos that offer specific educational programs where kids can have the opportunity to interact with the animals as they learn about them.

Look out for interaction stations and feeding areas around your chosen zoo where your kids can fully immerse themselves with the animals and, at the same time, learn about these animals and their daily lives from animal care professionals and educators.

Many zoos also offer a whole host of different learning activities and programs, including storytimes, singing sessions , or animal-related craft workshops, all of which will engage and interact with your kids in a multi-sensory and highly interactive way.

These activities are hands down, one of the best educational benefits of zoos!

Kid zoo, educational benefits of kids at zoos, educational benefits of zoos

Increased Self-awareness

One of the key factors in a child’s development is the ability to be self-aware and keep themselves safe. You may not think of this as something educational, but remember that to educate means to be taught. And self-awareness is key to interpersonal skills, social skills, and personal growth.

By visiting a zoo, you are allowing your child to push their boundaries and explore new environments and experiences while remaining in a relatively safe and controlled space.

As your child walks around a zoo encountering animals and species that they have never seen before, naturally they will feel trepidation when approaching certain animals.

This offers you an opportunity to help them move past their fears, while at the same time, teaching them about how to stay safe and respect animals from the wild.

Zoo Atlanta Panda, educational benefits of zoos

A Chance to Exercise In the Open Air

Although not strictly an educational benefit, exercise and fresh air do play a key role in the development of a child, both physically and mentally.

When your child is running around at the zoo, excitedly looking at all the animals, the fresh air is sending lots of oxygen through their blood and to their brain.

This results in increased brainpower . Many zoos have playgrounds, climbing structures, and miles of walking paths that are safe to let your kids go at their own pace and enjoy the freedoms of open space.

An added benefit, of course, is good exercise. Especially if your child is prone to spending large amounts of their time on an electronic device indoors.

Final Thoughts

Bringing your kids to the zoo so they can explore is a great way to spend time productively. The educational benefits of zoos above are priceless and will not only help them grow but will develop the bond between you, and the trust they have with you and the world around them.

Zoo Field Trip: An Amazing Experience for Students

When it comes to school field trips, many students and teachers favor visits to the local zoo as a unique educational experience that has something for everyone. From close-up encounters with exotic wildlife species to interactive learning stations teaching about conservation and animal behavior, there’s no better way to get up close and personal with nature than by going on a zoo field trip.

school trip zoo

With activities designed both for young children and older teens alike, zoos can offer learning opportunities tailored specifically to the needs of each individual student while also providing priceless memories they’ll never forget. So why not take your classes on a special journey outside the classroom walls this year, maybe to somewhere like the Omaha Zoo ?

Read on for six wonderful reasons why a trip to the zoo should be top of mind when planning your next group excursion!

Zoo visits are a great way to learn about animals and their habitats

Visiting the zoo provides a unique and exciting opportunity for students to explore the natural habitats of diverse animals in one central, easily accessible place. Throughout this journey of exploration, it's likely that students will not only learn about the individual characteristics and behaviors of animals but also gain an understanding of the importance of conserving our environment as they discover how even small actions on our part can have a huge impact on animal populations.

With educational resources and experienced zoologists available to them when visiting, there truly is no better way for students to intimately educate themselves about animals than by going to the zoo!

Seeing how wildlife interact with one another up close is a unique experience

Seeing how wildlife interacts with one another up close at the zoo is an extraordinary experience that can't be replicated any other way - it's like having a window into their world! Strolling through the carefully-designed habitats, students are able to view wild animals going about their natural behavior and learn so much more than they would by only reading about them in a book.

It's an especially exciting opportunity when they spot two different species of animal displaying playful behaviors or working together, as this remarkable sight shows them the incredible interconnectivity between creatures of all sizes and forms. Going to the zoo gives students a real appreciation for the environment and encourages them to explore and learn more about what's happening in our amazing natural world.

Going to the zoo is more affordable than other educational field trips

Going to the zoo is an affordable option when planning educational field trips for students of any age. Many zoos are making it easier than ever to go by offering discounted student and group rates, with some zoos even being totally free! Taking students on a trip to the zoo also encourages them to become more connected to nature, and spending time outdoors has been known to increase concentration and reduce stress levels in children.

Why not enjoy a day out with classmates while learning about conservation, endangered species, and the environment? Going to the zoo is an exceptional educational outing that won't break the bank!

school trip zoo

It’s an opportunity for students to practice observation and research skills

Visiting the zoo has become much more than just looking at animals and having a fun day out; it's an invaluable opportunity for students to observe, record information, and research in action. At the zoo, students can practice their observation skills and use the different resources available to investigate aspects of animal behavior, diet, and conservation efforts.

With the help of knowledgeable zoo staff, they might even discover something new - like a species they haven't heard of before! Plus, seeing animals in their natural habitat is an experience that gives students an appreciation for nature that textbooks won't be able to provide. By going to the zoo, students not only get to gain educational knowledge but also create unforgettable memories.

Zoos often have interactive activities and programs that can be enjoyable for kids

The zoo provides an opportunity for students of all ages to engage in meaningful activities, learn about animals and their habitats, and have some good old-fashioned fun. In addition, many zoos feature a range of interactive attractions that give kids hands-on learning experiences. From educational lectures and workshops where they discover how to protect and support animal welfare, to outdoor playgrounds with challenging elements like rope ladders and webbed nets where children can climb, play, and explore - there's something for everyone at the zoo.

Encourage a passion for wildlife conservation by providing children with the chance to meet wild creatures up close and understand why their protection is important.

Having a day out of the classroom can be beneficial for mental health and stress relief

A trip zoo offers a much-needed day out of the classroom for students and could be incredibly beneficial for their mental health. Even if it’s just for a few hours, taking some time away from everyday stressors like homework and tests can help break up the monotony in their academic lives. This change of environment is great for improving mood, creativity, and clear thinking; lessening stress can lead to better concentration and productivity when they get back to the classroom after their day out.

It’s also worth noting that spending time with animals in nature has been proven to have mental health benefits such as easing symptoms of depression and anxiety. So next time you’re thinking of an event your students might enjoy, consider taking them to your local zoo – not only will it be a fun experience, but going on the field trip can uplift their spirits too!

school trip zoo

In conclusion, going to the zoo is a great experience for students to learn about the natural world and understand more about the animals that inhabit our planet. It’s an interesting and enjoyable day out of school while also learning important skills like observation, research, and curiosity. Having this unique learning opportunity means that students can move away from the often stressful environment of the classroom, leading to mental health and stress relief benefits. And with zoo tickets often costing less than other educational field trips, it gives teachers a cost-friendly option to plan ahead for their next exciting outdoor activities.

What better way to appreciate animals than to see them in action? So make sure your next trip includes a visit to the zoo – Adventure Student Travel will be happy to schedule one in!

Louisville Zoo gives the all clear after reported bomb threat

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Business is back to usual at the Louisville Zoo after they reported a bomb threat Friday morning.

Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said they received a call around 8:47 a.m. saying there was a bomb inside the zoo. As soon as the threat was received, Maloney said staff were immediately evacuated away from the area.

As for their evacuation process, Maloney said the call came in while the zoo was closed, so there were limited people inside the zoo at the time. Several field trips were scheduled for Friday. The zoo is in the process of rescheduling those trips.

The zoo gave the all clear and will reopen at 12 p.m.
