Imagine spending nearly five months exploring the most fascinating destinations in the world while living in a lavish suite on a luxury cruise ship . From your suite’s private balcony, you can watch the ship pull into secluded islands and alluring ports in Asia, Europe, and Australia. All the while, you have unlimited access to gourmet dining—lobster, filet mignon, Champagne—with every need seen to by a solicitous crew.
It might sound like a travel fantasy, but this is the reality on board Regent Seven Seas’ new once-in-a-lifetime cruise voyage. The line’s just-announced 2027 world cruise will whisk travelers to 40 countries across six continents for an unforgettable adventure over the course of 140 nights.
The voyage is set to depart Miami, Florida , on January 11, 2027, and ends 20 weeks later in New York. Along the way, passengers will travel 35,668 nautical miles, cross 3 oceans, and visit 71 ports throughout the Caribbean, Australia , New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The destinations will offer travelers the chance to cross off their bucket lists a whopping 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites , including natural and cultural wonders such as Australia’s Kakadu National Park, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, and the temples of Mumbai’s Elephanta Caves.
The itinerary offers 14 overnight port stays , so travelers can truly immerse themselves in destinations like Sydney, Australia; Bali, Indonesia; and Aqaba, Jordan. Plus, passengers can choose from more than 480 shore excursions that are included in the cruise fare. There will also be unique shoreside events for all guests in three ports, including a Carnival celebration in Panama City, Panama ; a street festival event in Colombo, Sri Lanka; and a Roaring Twenties-themed night in Málaga, Spain .
The Seven Seas Splendor has all-suite accommodations, each with an outdoor balcony, and can carry up to 746 guests.
Regent is offering the new itinerary as a growing number of travelers are becoming interested in lengthier cruise voyages . “We have seen continued interest and demand to venture further afield and for longer durations and so we are thrilled to announce that our 2027 World Cruise will take place on board Seven Seas Splendor , offering more luxury travelers the opportunity to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience” Andrea DeMarco, President of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, said in a statement.
During their twenty weeks at sea, passengers should be quite comfortable on board the Seven Seas Splendor . The ship holds just 746 guests and offers all-suite accommodations, each with an outdoor balcony. Splendor was launched in 2020, and it offers travelers an atmosphere of fresh luxury. Throughout the public spaces, you’ll find more than 500 crystal chandeliers, two pools, and even a $5 million art collection featuring Picassos and Mirós throughout the ship.
What’s more: Nearly everything on the ship is included in the cruise fare , including the nine restaurants. Among the dining options are specialty restaurants such as Pacific Rim, an Asian fusion concept, Chartreuse, upscale French dining, and Prime 7, a sophisticated steakhouse. Also included? Alcohol and premium beverages like fine wines and spirits.
Nearly everything on the ship is included in the cruise fare, including dining at nine onboard restaurants.
To sustain such luxurious meals, the ship will constantly be stocked with 13,000 pounds of lobster, 14,000 pounds of filet mignon, 3,600 pounds of smoked salmon, and 150 pounds of caviar. Plus, the ship’s bars will stock 58,000 bottles of wine—including 14,000 bottles of Champagne.
Also a part of the all-inclusive pricing is first-class airfare, unlimited valet laundry—including dry cleaning and pressing—and unlimited Wi-Fi.
Prices for the super-voyage, called “ The World of Splendor, ” start at $91,499 per guest for a 307-square-foot Veranda Suite and range all the way up to $839,999 per guest for the massive Regent Suite—a 4,443-square-foot space on the ship’s fourteenth deck with luxurious amenities like an in-suite spa, a personal sauna, a Steinway grand piano, 270-degree ocean views, large wrap-around veranda, and an in-suite Picasso on the wall. Regent says the rate for the Regent Suite is a record-breaking price for the industry.
If 140 nights at sea seems a bit too long, there’s also an option to participate in a shorter leg of the round-the-world adventure, which departs Miami but lasts 126 nights and ends in Rome.
Tickets for the epic world cruise go on sale April 10, 2024, but eager travelers can submit an early reservation request on Regent’s site.

First look: Inside the most expensive luxury cruise ship ever, Regent's Seven Seas Splendor
Luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises got a lot of buzz three-and-a-half years ago when it unveiled its first new ship in more than a decade, Seven Seas Explorer.
At $450 million, the 750-passenger vessel was the most expensive luxury ship ever built, and it wowed the cruise world with its opulence (think: Soaring ceilings, inlaid marble floors, crystal chandeliers and Picassos on the walls, to name just a few high-end touches).
Now, the line is out with a sister vessel that, by at least one measure, is even more over-the-top.
Dubbed Seven Seas Splendor, the 750-passenger ship cost more than $600 million to build, the chairman and CEO of Regent parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Frank Del Rio, said during an unveiling event last weekend.
For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .
"You never say, 'no money is spared,' because this is a business, and financial considerations are always important," Del Rio said while talking to travel agents in Seven Sea Splendor's two-deck-high Constellation Theater. "But, really, this is the most expensive ship ever built on a per-bed basis. I can't think of a place where we said, yeah, let's do it this way because it's cheaper."
Indeed, if Regent was cutting corners, we didn't see it while touring the ship.
TPG was among a handful of media outlets to get a sneak peek at Seven Seas Splendor during the event, and we found it lined with as much high-end Italian marble (46,000 square feet), crystal chandeliers (more than 500, we were told) and high-end art as we've ever seen on a Regent ship -- or any other luxury cruise vessel, for that matter.
This is what you would expect from Regent, of course. Known for its luxury focus, the 28-year-old brand has long operated some of the world's most elegant ships. Regent is sort of the cruising equivalent of the hotel world's Four Seasons chain -- a brand promising beautiful accommodations, refined food and pampering service.
Regent ships also are priced a lot like a Four Seasons — that is, they're not inexpensive (more on that below). The unveiling event took place in advance of Seven Seas Splendor's first sailing out of Miami with paying passengers. Here are some of our first impressions:
The suites on board are sweet
On Seven Seas Splendor, there are two kinds of accommodations: Fancy and really, really fancy.
For starters, every single one of the ship's 375 cabins is a suite. Even the very smallest of the accommodations measures 307 square feet, which is none-too-shabby for a cruise ship.
Every room also comes with an ocean view and a balcony. Unlike on many ships, there isn't a single windowless "inside" cabin to be found.
Still, it's in the bigger cabin complexes at the front and back of Seven Seas Splendor where things get really impressive.
Seven Seas Splendor is home to one of the most elaborate and expensive cruise ship suites ever conceived.
Dubbed the Regent Suite and located above the bridge, the $11,000-a-night complex sprawls over 4,443 square feet -- nearly twice the square footage of the average American home. Its master bedroom offers a bed with a handmade mattress that cost more than $200,000.
The Regent Suite is just one of an array of megasuites on Seven Seas Splendor. There are a dozen more that measure in the 1,000-square-foot to 2,000-square-foot range. There also are accommodations in the 500-square-foot to 1,000-square-foot range.
Among the biggest megasuites (other than the Regent Suite) are four sprawling Master Suites at the back of the ship that measure as much as 2,108 square feet. They each have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large living room and two private balconies.
Note that the square footage totals mentioned above include balcony space, so the actual indoor living area isn't quite as big as it sounds. Only 71% of the Regent Suite's 4,443 square feet of space is found in its interior, for instance. The rest comes from the balcony.
Still, at all levels, the suites on Seven Seas Splendor are among the most enticing in cruising.
The Restaurants are elegant and familiar
As is typical for Regent ships, Seven Seas Splendor offers an array of elegant and high-end restaurants, all of which are included in the fare.
Regent regulars will be familiar with the choices. They include Compass Rose, the international cuisine staple of all Regent ships. There also are versions of the Prime 7 steakhouse and La Veranda casual restaurant found on all Regent vessels.
Outposts of the Asian eatery Pacific Rim and French restaurant Chartreuse (found on some but not all Regent vessels) also are on Seven Seas Splendor.
While the restaurant names will look familiar to longtime Regent customers, some of the culinary offerings will be a surprise. In a major overhaul to menus, the line has added more than 200 new or updated dishes across the various venues.
In Compass Rose, for example, there's a new grilled branzino served with cauliflower rice (cauliflower rice seems to be everywhere these days). Also new was a Malaysian-style braised beef short rib that came with a curry sauce and jasmine rice. It's great to see Regent adding more Asian-influenced dishes in Compass Rose.
One of the edgier new appetizers at Pacific Rim was a "smoking" dry ice sashimi plate (the dry ice causing the smoking effect). But I skipped that in favor of a wonderfully presented tuna tartar. The latter was served with a mirin-and-soy sauce, and a carrot-ginger dressing.
Design-wise, most of the venues look similar to their counterparts on Seven Seas Explorer -- which is to say, they are stunning. Seven Seas Explorer is known for some of the most spectacularly designed restaurants at sea.
One restaurant that did get a bit of a tweak was La Veranda. It now features over-water alcove seating, thanks to a clever bit of reengineering of the ship's exterior walls. The alcoves jut out over the ocean.

There's a new (and hipper) drinks menu
With the debut of Seven Seas Splendor, Regent is diving head first into the trend toward ever-quirkier craft drinks. The ship is home to 19 new signature cocktails made with fresh fruits, natural spices and garden-grown herbs, and served with all sorts of garnishes in picked-specifically-for-the-drink glasses.
In the name of research, I tried a number of the new concoctions, including the Bonne Soiree -- a mix of Woodford Reserve bourbon, Chambord and citrus bitters that was slung my way in a coupe glass. It had an oversized ice sphere plopped in the middle.
Other than finding the giant ball of ice a bit in-the-way (don't worry -- I got around it), I found the Bonne Soiree quite bon . Its citrus and raspberry notes were delightful. Of course, I'll probably call anything with bourbon delightful.
The new drinks menu also includes a lineup of fancy gin drinks that incorporate new-for-Regent Fever-Tree premium tonics and all sorts of spices, herbs and fruits.
Nearly all signature cocktails and the new gin drinks are included in the fare (as is typical for drinks on Regent ships) and will be rolling out to other Regent ships starting later this year.
The flow is better in public areas
When Seven Seas Splendor's sister Seven Seas Explorer first debuted, it was widely praised as one of the most elegant and luxurious ships ever built. But critics did have a few small gripes, mostly having to do with the flow around some of the public spaces in the vessel's interior.
The footprint of Seven Seas Splendor is very similar to the Seven Seas Explorer, as both ships are part of the same Explorer Class series. But Regent made a few significant changes to the design of Seven Seas Splendor that go a long way to improving this flow.
The change that will immediately stand out to anyone who is familiar with Seven Seas Explorer is the grand staircase in the ship's central atrium has been completely turned around.
A major focal point of the vessel's interior, the staircase now cascades down from the public areas on Deck 5 toward the magnificent, marble-floored promenade on Deck 4. This promenade leads directly into Seven Seas Splendor's main restaurant, Compass Rose.
This is as it should be. The Compass Rose restaurant, and the adjacent Splendor Lounge and Casino, are where passengers coming down this stairway will likely be going.
On Seven Seas Explorer, the staircase inexplicable takes passengers in the opposite direction of these venues and unceremoniously drops them in front of an elevator bank.
Not far from the top of the grand staircase, on Deck 5, you'll find another notable design change. The locations of the craft cocktail-serving Meridian Lounge and The Coffee Connection cafe have been flipped. The Meridian Lounge is now on the starboard side of the vessel (to the right, if you're facing the front of the ship). The Coffee Connection is on the port side.
This little change greatly improves the flow of Deck 5 as passengers now can stroll between the deck's various venues along a single, port-side corridor. The old configuration resulted in a less intuitive walkabout for passengers on the deck.
One more little design change I absolutely loved: Regent has added outdoor seating at The Coffee Connection. On a pleasant day in a warm-water locale like the Caribbean or French Polynesia , you now can take your latte outside.
Yet one more alteration to the design of the ship is the addition of new, glass-enclosed seating alcoves along the sides of the Observation Lounge at the front of the vessel. They offer views forward, to the side and backward all at once.
The cooking school is back — and better
Cooking schools at sea are suddenly all the rage. Even budget line Carnival recently added one . So, it perhaps should come as no surprise that Regent is doubling down on the concept.
After adding its first cooking classroom at sea in 2016 on Seven Seas Explorer, the line has built a second one on Seven Seas Splendor.
In size and layout, Seven Seas Splendor's Culinary Arts Kitchen, as the venue is called, is nearly identical to the cooking classroom on Seven Seas Explorer. It has 18 individual cooking stations tricked out with top-of-the-line induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and all sorts of cool cooking equipment. It's backed by floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the ocean.
But, during an abbreviated test class in the space over the weekend, it was clear the programming has been revamped in a major way.
More than a dozen new classes have been added with a focus on dishes from the destinations where Seven Seas Splendor will be sailing.
During the session I experienced, we started with a lesson on a fried, stuffed-olive appetizer from the Le Marche region of Italy where Seven Seas Splendor was built. We then tried our hand at poaching fish in a Spanish style that tied to the ship's transatlantic crossing to Miami from Spain. Instruction in making a French Toast-like dessert themed to the ship's new home in the Caribbean rounded out the experience.
While our test session only lasted about an hour, the typical class that Regent plans for the space will be two hours long. The sessions will cost $89 per person.
The ship is spacious ... really spacious
One last thing to note about Seven Seas Splendor is that it's one of the most spacious ships at sea. Its "space ratio" -- a measure of how much space there is per passenger -- is nearly 74. That's about twice the space per passenger as many mass-market vessels.
By comparison, the space ratio of cruise giant Carnival's newest ship, Carnival Panorama , is only around 33. The space ratio of the newest Norwegian ship, Norwegian Encore , is approximately 42.
What a space ratio like that means is you will never feel crowded on Seven Seas Splendor, and you'll rarely encounter a line anywhere -- whether at the boarding area or at the poolside grill.
Bottom line
If you're the kind of traveler who only stays at the most luxurious, pampering hotels and resorts on land, and you have the bankroll to afford them, Seven Seas Splendor is your kind of cruise ship.
It truly is one of the loveliest, most luxurious ships at sea -- full stop. It's also all about perfect service. The ship sails with 551 crew members to serve 750 passengers. That's not quite the one-to-one ratio that is the Holy Grail of luxury cruising. But it's close.
Of course, Seven Seas Splendor isn't for everyone. Regent sailings tend to draw a large number of older travelers in their 60s, 70s and 80s. Many are retired, after years of very successful careers, and they're spending some of their nest egg exploring the world in style. The average age for the line's passengers is in the mid-60s.
If you're a younger traveler looking for a luxury option at sea, keep in mind that you may be in a distinct minority on board a Regent ship.

What it costs
In general, Regent ships are among the priciest vessels at sea, and Seven Seas Splendor is no exception. Many upcoming sailings on Seven Seas Splendor start at more than $1,000 per person, per day.
Keep in mind that such starting prices are for the smaller suites on the ship. Larger suites on Seven Seas Splendor can cost several times more, depending on their size. As noted above, the biggest suite on the ship, the Regent Suite, costs $11,000 a night for two.
Such daily pricing means that, for a typical, nine-night voyage from Venice to Barcelona that includes stops in Croatia, Italy, France and Monaco , you're looking at a fare of nearly $10,000 per person for a smaller suite. A bigger suite could set you back anywhere from $14,000 to nearly $50,000 per person.
If this seems a bit insane to you, don't forget that this a very high-end luxury product.
And remember, fares at Regent are incredibly all-inclusive . In addition to a suite, all meals and onboard entertainment, fares include nearly all drinks onboard including fine wines and spirits. It might actually be difficult to spend a dime when out for the evening on Seven Seas Splendor.
Fares also include business-class international flights to and from the ship from the U.S. and Canada, unlimited shore excursions in ports, unlimited internet access, gratuities for crew and ground transfers.
Passengers staying in higher category suites also get an included one-night, precruise hotel package .
Just about the only things you'll pay for onboard Seven Seas Splendor are treatments in the ship's spa, and the cooking classes.
Seven Seas Splendor will spend the next couple months sailing out of Miami, San Diego and New York City before moving to Europe for the spring, summer and fall. European itineraries will include voyages to the French Riviera , Greek Islands , Iberian Peninsula and United Kingdom .

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will sail what may well be the most expensive commercial cruise ever in 2027: an around-the-world trip with prices ranging from just under $100,000 to almost $1 million per person.
Sound over the top? Yes, for most travelers. But the luxury line expects the cruise will break company sales records, just as many of its past world cruises have, often selling out the day bookings opened.
“People are more eager than ever to embark on once-in-a-lifetime luxury travel experiences,” said Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “In fact, over the past few years, we’ve received continued interest and increasing demand for our world cruises as discerning travelers want to venture further and for longer durations. Now more than ever, people do not want to wait for opportunities to pass them by.”
Passengers on 2027 World Cruise will call the recently launched 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor home for more than 4 months.

Indeed, weeks- and even months-long world cruises have become a popular travel style in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the luxury and upscale cruise markets.
To meet the growing demand, Regent’s 2027 world cruise will be the first aboard one of the company’s largest and newest explorer class ships, the 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor , which launched in 2020. The ship has 373 suites across 15 categories, ranging from the 307-square-foot Veranda Suite to its lavish, one-of-a-kind 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite.
Perched on the 14th deck, the Regent Suite has unobstructed 270-degree views over the ship’s bow from a 1,300-square-foot wraparound veranda. A glass-enclosed solarium offers a view that mirrors that of the captain’s from the bridge. The over-the-top accommodation also has its own spa retreat complete with a personal sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi, as well as original Picasso artworks adorning the walls, a custom Steinway Grand Maroque Piano by Dakota Jackson, and a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000, topped with the finest bed linens and pillow styles.
The bed in the Regent Suite of the Seven Seas Splendor features a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000.
Regent Suite guests will also have a dedicated butler, a full bar, and a personal car and driver in every port.
Fares for the 140-night voyage, which departs on January 11, 2027, start at $91,499 per guest for a Veranda Suite and go up to $839,999 per guest for the opulent Regent Suite. Travelers who prefer a slightly shorter journey can sail a 126-night Miami-to-Rome voyage, with fares ranging from $84,999 per guest up to $755,999 per guest.
So, what exactly does one get for those prices?
Fares for the World of Splendor sailing include first-class round-trip flights, door-to-door luggage service, 486 shore excursions, specialty dining, wine and spirits, unlimited Wi-Fi, and unlimited laundry and dry cleaning.
The sailing will visit 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ancient site of Petra in Jordan.

For this 140-day world cruise, the Seven Seas Splendor will sail from Miami to New York, visiting 71 ports of call (including 14 overnight stays) in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Guests will travel 35,668 nautical miles across 3 oceans, exploring 40 countries on 6 continents.
Over more than four months, passengers will have the opportunity to celebrate Carnival in Panama City, visit a Sri Lankan street festival in Colombo, and step back in time during an exclusive Roaring ’20s–themed event in Málaga, Spain, that will feature haute couture and vintage automobile displays. The itinerary includes visits to 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among them Kakadu National Park in Australia, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Elephanta Caves in India, and Palmeral of Elche near Alicante, Spain.

In this article
Regent Seven Seas Cruises have announced the name of their newest ship. The vessel, which is under construction and due for completion toward the end of 2023, will be called Seven Seas Grandeur.
Seven Seas Grandeur will be the third Explorer-class cruise ship in the Regent Seven Seas Cruises fleet. In fact, her sister ships, Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor , have already proved wildly popular with luxury cruisers.
“We are immensely proud that by the end of 2023 we will have welcomed a sixth member to the world’s most luxurious fleet. It’s a testament to the expanding demand for luxury cruising that the Regent brand is driving thanks to our perfectly sized ships offering unrivaled space at sea.” Jason Montague – President and chief executive officer, Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Seven Seas Grandeur will have room for 750 guests in luxurious all-suite, all-balcony accommodation.
In addition, the ultra-luxury cruise ship will feature enhanced restaurants. On Seven Seas Grandeur the Compass Rose restaurant will be entirely reimagined in the style of a crystal forest.
It will feature a cascading waterfall sculpture, as well as canopies of interwoven crystal and wood-edge illuminated trees that will arch overhead. There will also be a gold-leaf mural depicting the flora and fauna at the edge of a forest. It’s sure to set the scene for a magical night of dining.
Seven Seas Grandeur will set sail in the fourth quarter of 2023. Details about the other restaurants, as well as the suites, amenities and on-board experiences are yet to come.

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever
One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.
Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.
The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.
The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.
"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”
Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.
The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

Top lawyer falls from cabin balcony into sea on luxury cruise
A corporate lawyer who vanished on a Mediterranean cruise ship fell feet first from a cabin balcony into the sea, a court heard.
Nigel Blythe-Tinker, 72, former head of legal at gaming giant William Hill, went missing while on board the luxury cruise ship Seven Seas Mariner , the world’s first cruise liner to boast “all suite, all balcony” cabins , in July last year.
The High Court heard that the alarm was raised when Blythe-Tinker, who also had a stint as chairman of Ladbrokes’ multibillion-pound parent company GVC Holdings, failed to disembark the ship at Barcelona, though he was on board when it departed Marseilles the previous day.
His family made “desperate attempts” to make contact with him, after which staff on the ship found his cabin empty with his “clothes folded neatly on the bed”.
Following evidence from Blythe-Tinker’s daughters, judge Chief Master Karen Shuman declared that their father met his death after falling feet first into the sea from his cabin balcony in the early hours of July 22.
The court heard that Blythe-Tinker, who was originally from Worksop, Notts, had been married three times and has two adult daughters, Sophie and Claire Blythe-Tinker.
He had been in the process of moving back to England after a period living in Australia when he vanished.
The 709-foot, 48,000-ton ship is hailed online as “one of the world’s best all-inclusive cruise ships”, with individual balconies attached to each cabin.
The cruise liner, which carries 700 passengers and 445 crew, was en route from Marseilles to Barcelona on July 21 2023 when Blythe-Tinker, who had been in “constant contact” with his family, began to display unusual behaviour and send messages in which he “wasn’t himself”.
Blythe-Tinker had been renovating a house in England he had bought near to the home of his “close” cousin Andrew Gilling and had told Mr Gilling that he had been worried about having enough money to complete the project.
He told his cousin he had had “a suicidal thought” and also seemed confused in messages with other family members, his London-based daughter Sophie, a history and politics teacher, told the judge.
His family contacted staff on the ship and the onboard doctor was dispatched to check on the lawyer, who said he had “no suicidal thoughts” and was physically well apart from back pain.
However, when the ship docked in Barcelona on the morning of July 22 last year, Blythe-Tinker did not disembark and his cabin was empty.
The ship’s CCTV revealed footage of an object – which appeared to be a person – falling from the vessel near to Blythe-Tinker’s cabin balcony and hitting the water.
Sophie Blythe-Tinker brought a High Court application for an examination of the circumstances in which her father vanished, asking for a declaration that he was dead.
She told the judge that he had seemed “strange” in his responses to messages and emails shortly before his disappearance.
When he failed to turn up at Heathrow airport – where he had been due to fly after leaving the ship in Barcelona – his family panicked and made “desperate attempts” to find out where he was. They eventually learned from the cruise company that he had never disembarked at Barcelona.
He ‘wasn’t himself’
Giving judgment in the case and declaring the missing lawyer officially dead, the judge said Blythe-Tinker had been “an active 72-year-old” who “travelled extensively”.
However, he “wasn’t himself” and had become “increasingly abnormal” during his time on the ship, she said.
“I have viewed the video evidence,” she said. “Something descends from the ship at 4.28am. I’m prepared to accept that that was a body and the direction is consistent with it coming from the suite Mr Blythe-Tinker was in.
“The ship was miles from any port or land at the time.
“I’m satisfied on the evidence before me that Mr Blythe-Tinker died at 4.28 central European time by falling to his death from the ship that he was on,” the judge concluded.

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.
The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.
The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.
The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.
And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.
“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”
No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.
The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.
In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.
“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person
- Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
- The ultra-luxury cruise line operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
- Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.
A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.
To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.
Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.
The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.
Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.
The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.
Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.
Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.
Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.
River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.
River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.
Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.
One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.
Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.
Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.
To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.
River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.
But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.
"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.
"Pampering” they will get.
Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.
Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.
Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.
During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.
At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.
Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.
The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.
But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."
Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.
Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.
"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."
Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.
Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.
Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .
Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?
If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.
These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.
The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.
But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.
