Six13’s New Hanukkah Taylor Swift Parody Goes Through All the Eras

This mega-parody goes through 14 different Taylor Swift songs in just over four minutes — a Hanukkah miracle.

We knew this would be the year of the Taylor Swift Jewish parody, with the Eras Tour and the Eras Tour movie (and the relationship between Taylor and Kansas City Chief’s Travis Kelce) enrapturing the nation and the world. So it only makes sense that Six13, the a cappella group that rose to fame partly because of their 2014 “Shake It Off” parody, would return to the oeuvre of the songstress from Pennsylvania.

But how do you top a video as delightful as that one from eight years ago in which the men of Six13 made every prepubescent Jewish child cackle by dancing with colorful tutus? (Though I have to say, tutus are for everyone!) The answer is: You go all out! Six13’s 2023 Taylor Swift Hanukkah parody includes not one, not two, but 14 different Taylor Swift songs, taking us through (most of) the eras of Swift’s discography in just a little over four minutes.

“Six13 – Era-lution of Taylor Swift (Chanukah’s version)” starts with a parody of her 2008 hit “Love Story” titled “Hanukkah Story” and ends with Taylor’s 2023 version of the 2019 song “Cruel Summer,” titled “Judah and His Brothers.” Of course, they had to remake “Anti-Hero” into “Antiochus” (since we released our own Passover parody of the song titled “Evil Pharoah,” we approve of this choice).

They even brought us a take on 2008’s “You Belong With Me,” the same song that fellow Jewish group Y-Studs released a very sweet, bubbe-filled parody of this year . (We wonder if the two groups discussed their Hanukkah parody plans when they collaborated on their incredibly moving rendition of “Avinu Shebashamayin,” the prayer for Israel, that they released along with the Maccabeats in late October?)

Taylor Swift fans will be stoked to know that the band went all out with the imagery in this video, too — we’ve got Travis Kelce jerseys, a ton of beaded bracelets, heart-shaped shades, shirts with 1989, cowboy hats, pom-poms and frequent outfits changes (and even one backdrop change!). One of the group members can be seen writing “13” on their hand, a reference to Swift’s lucky number, before adding the Six for the name of the group ( which, if you didn’t know, is a reference to the 613 mitzvot, or commandments in the Torah, so a Jewish lucky number, indeed!).

Also guest-starring in the video are some Hanukkah classics: a menorah and two potatoes (that look suspiciously like sweet potatoes, which make for great latkes, too).

The lyrics include references to the Hanukkah story, about how to make latkes and about Jewish survival (yes, there’s an Israeli flag in there). In my opinion, the best parody in this video (they’re all great, to be fair) is their take on the 2012 bop “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” in which they sing about the spelling of Hanukkah (Chanukah? Hanuka? Januca?), acknowledging that “we will never ever, know the proper letters.” Truth!

There is one complaint that we here at Kveller must lodge at this otherwise terrific video: Where is the “Folklore” and “Evermore” content? Couldn’t “Cardigan” have been turned into “Hanukkah sweater?” Couldn’t “August” easily be about Kislev? It would’ve only been right to turn “champagne problems” into a musing on latke problems in this season of latke topping strife. The people demand answers (the people are Kveller’s very small staff).

Otherwise, very well done, Six13. You’ve outdone yourselves again. Chag sameach to all.

Six13 unveils epic 14 song Taylor Swift Hanukkah parody video with St. Louis connections

Just in time for the first night of Hanukkah, Jewish a cappella group Six13 dropped their latest and perhaps most expansive work to date, a new Hanukkah parody featuring 13 Taylor Swift tunes and a reprise of their T-Swift parody “Shake it off” from 2014.

“In keeping with the theme of her ongoing Eras tour we decided to make it an evolution of Taylor Swift, or, Era-Lution, as we’re calling it,” said Six13 member and Creve Coeur native Lior Melnick . “Parts of 14 songs, in chronological order, spanning 4½ minutes.”

A 4-minute and 21-second music video to be exact, that will leave your face aching for smiling that long.

The St. Louis connections

Melnick, an alum of Solomon Schechter Day School of St. Louis (now Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School) and a member of Traditional Congregation, not only takes a leading role in the video but also plays a significant role in crafting many of the lyrics. His journey into lyric writing for Six13 began with last year’s Hanukah song, “ Elton Johnukah ,” sparking a newfound passion.

This year, he tackled the challenge of composing lyrics for multiple songs in the medley, demonstrating creativity in mirroring various rhyme schemes and syllable parsings.

“Being able to come up with content for 13 song snippets that would be engaging and operate independently and without repeating too many of the same themes was very demanding and rewarding,” said Melnick, who also made the songwriting effort, a family affair.

“My sister Noga, who lives in St. Louis, also collaborated with me on many of the lyrics,” said Melnick. “She shares my love of Taylor Swift, and it’s a big part of our bond. Our family trip to Israel over the high holidays this year coincided perfectly with the window where the group was developing lyrics, and so she and I–as well as my sister-in-law, Racquel Glickman, also a big Swiftie–had a lot of time together to bounce ideas off of each other. The two of them were very enthusiastic contributors.”

Making Era-lution of Taylor Swift

Six13 conceived the medley idea in late 2022 and began production in August, driven by the urgency created by the timing of her Eras tour. The production process for this medley was unlike anything Six13 had ever done before due to the sheer breadth of the content they were covering.

“Taylor Swift has so many big hits throughout the years, and it was tough work whittling down her remarkable repertoire,” said Melnick.

Throughout the production process, the team worked on crafting lyrics for over 20 songs before deciding on the final selections for the medley. Despite having several successful songs by Taylor Swift in consideration, they ultimately discarded some of them due to dissatisfaction with the lyrics options they generated.

“Our focus was on choosing the best Taylor Swift songs for which we felt most confident about creating parody lyrics that would enhance the overall quality of the medley,” said Melnick.

Following the Oct. 7th attacks on Israel, the group debated long and hard about whether they should change to something less ‘fun’.

“In the end, we agreed that even though the Jewish people and the State of Israelare still in a state of mourning, it’s precisely because of what that attack stood for – the eradication of Jews simply because they are Jews – that putting out a song that celebrates our culture, traditions, and history would be the best way to respond to that unrestrained hatred,” said Melnick.

The Cannondale Six13

March 29, 2004  – With excitement building rapidly for the April launch of its new super-light Six13 road models, Cannondale has responded with a new area of its web site devoted exclusively to the innovative new design. The new microsite can be accessed through Cannondale's home page (www.cannondale.com), or directly at either www.cannondalesix13.com or www.legalizemycannondale.com. The site has in-depth information on the Six13's unique design and construction process, which mates carbon fiber top, down and seat tubes with welded aluminum joint clusters and a welded aluminum rear triangle. The highly stylized, Flash-intensive site also details the three different component packages (Campagnolo Record, Shimano Dura Ace and Campy Centaur) which can be paired with any one of five color options to create a complete Six13 bike. Along with a photo gallery, the site includes information on the Six13's debut at last year's Tour de France.  A contest where cyclists can enter to win their own Six13 will be added in the coming weeks. About The Cannondale Six13 The Cannondale Six13 frame weighs just 2.5 pounds (1,150 grams), and unlike virtually every full carbon design, is offered in 12 frame sizes to ensure a perfect frame-to-rider fit for optimum comfort and efficiency. In development for two years, the new Cannondale has been road and race-tested for more than 18 months. The Six13 is named for its carbon fiber top, down and seat tubes (carbon is number six in the periodic chart), and its aluminum tube clusters and rear triangle (aluminum's atomic number is 13).  The frame's carbon fiber tubes incorporate three different types of carbon fiber, and are constructed in a unique process that yields a seamless, interwoven tube. The Six13 is formed in an innovative co-molding method in which the tubes and the frame are constructed simultaneously. The carbon fiber tubes, still in a soft, pliable, and uncured state, are positioned inside the aluminum tube clusters.  Internal bladders are inflated and heat is applied, and the finished tubes are physically formed within the clusters to create a perfectly aligned, super-light frame. As the tubes are being formed, the carbon fiber also expands slightly outward through small windows cut through the walls of the aluminum clusters. The resulting mechanical interlock, paired with an adhesive bond, delivers unparalleled frame integrity: The carbon fiber protruding into the cut-outs would have to be physically sheared in order to pull a cured tube from one of the clusters. “Legalize My Cannondale” The Six13 made its public debut at the 2003 Tour de France, where an advanced prototype of the new design was race-tested by Gilberto Simoni of the Cannondale-sponsored Saeco team.  Simoni rode the bike to an impressive victory in the Tour's 14th stage – one of the toughest of the entire Tour – despite the fact that mechanics had been forced to add weights to the bike in order to satisfy the UCI's 15-pound minimum weight rule. Cannondale launched a “Legalize My Cannondale” appeal to the UCI in protest of the rule, with Saeco riders donning uniforms emblazoned with the slogan for one of the Tour's stages.
