Located just a few hours away from the Canadian Rockies, the city of Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, and is considered the “Gateway to the North”. Locals are used to the cold and snow, and the city’s proximity to the mountains means there are tons of amazing options for snowboarding and skiing near Edmonton. Incredible Ski Resorts Near Edmonton

Marmot basin.

Located about four hours from Edmonton, Marmot Basin is a great choice for the whole family! With 91 trails evenly split across easy to expert, there’s something for everyone. Located in Jasper National Park, enjoy incredible mountain views across the resort’s 1720 skiable acres and 3000 feet of vertical. There are 7 lifts across 5 mountain faces to choose from, as well as 2 terrain parks and diverse terrain, including groomed runs, trees, moguls, bowls and chutes. After a long day on the slopes, check out the charming mountain town of Jasper . There are tons of unique places to stay in Jasper , including  this adorable suite right downtown!

Lake Louise Ski Resort

• Distance from Edmonton: 369 km (~4 hours, 40 minutes)

Located among some of Canada’s most jaw-dropping mountains and the iconic Lake Louise, the Lake Louise Ski Resort is not to be missed if you’re looking for snowboarding  and skiing near Edmonton. The resort spans 4 mountain faces and 4200 acres, packing in 3250 feet of vertical. There are 143 marked runs to choose from, as well as back bowls and the West Bowl. There is a solid mix of beginner, intermediate, and expert runs accessible from every chair, meaning the whole family can enjoy. Stay at the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise , or if you’re on a budget, check out an adorable mountain chalet.

Pro Tip: Lake Louise is part of SkiBig3 , a mountain collective for ski resorts in Banff National Park. If you’re hungry for more than Louise has to offer, look at purchasing a SkiBig3 pass, which grants you access to Mt. Norquay and Sunshine Village as well.

Sunshine Village

• Distance from Edmonton: 430 km (~4 hours, 20 minutes)
• Accommodation on site? Yes, at Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Just like Lake Louise, Sunshine Village in Banff National Park is a top-quality option for snowboarding and skiing near Edmonton. Just 15 minutes from the town of Banff, Sunshine sits astride the Continental Divide in the Rockies. You can even ski in British Columbia and Alberta in the same run! With a ski season lasting from early November to late May, and 120 runs across 3300 acres, including the 12-acre Great Divide Terrain Park, Sunshine offers some of the best skiing in the Rockies. There are runs for all levels, as well as lessons and rentals. Experts can test their skills in the off-piste Delirium Dive. Stay onsite at Sunshine Mountain Lodge , or cozy up in this apartment in the town of Banff.

Mt. Norquay

• Distance from Edmonton: 420 km (~4 hours, 15 minutes)

Located just outside the town of Banff (you can see the lights from night skiing if you look up from town!), Mt. Norquay is a favourite of Banff locals and is a great spot to hit up from Edmonton. Choose from steep terrain or gentle groomers, with 60 runs spanning 190 acres. Norquay boasts 1650 feet of vertical, 5 lifts, and a terrain park. The hill has 85% snowmaking capacity, even though being located in Banff means plenty of big dumps over the season. Make a weekend of it and book a place to stay in Banff!

Rabbit Hill Snow Resort

• Location: 20715 57 Ave SW, Edmonton, AB

Looking for local? Look no further! Located within Edmonton city limits, Rabbit Hill Snow Resort has more than enough winter fun to keep you busy if you want to hit the slopes after work or on the weekend. Featuring 11 runs ranging from green to black diamond, as well as 3 terrain parks, Rabbit Hill is a great ski hill near Edmonton. The resort also has a snow school, so you can get in some practice before you take on the big mountains further south. If you’re coming from out of town, check out this cute downtown condo. 

Panorama Mountain Resort

• Distance from Edmonton: 582 km (~6hr, 15 minutes)
• Accommodation on site? Yes, at many lodges, including Horsethief Lodge

For a perfect weekend getaway from Edmonton, look no further than a ski trip to Panorama Mountain Resort . Located near Invermere, BC, you’ll be rewarded for your journey with 2975 acres of terrain, 4265 feet of vertical, and 133 trails. The terrain feels endless, with plenty of easy wide groomed runs, as well as a stash of black diamond runs in Taynton Bowl, a former heli-skiing area. Choose from a multitude of slopeside lodging options, from Tamarack Condos to the Taynton Lodge , or explore Invermere from this cozy condo.

Fernie Alpine Resort

• Distance from Edmonton: 580 km (~6hr, 15 minutes)
• Accommodation on site? Yes, at many lodges, including Lizard Creek Lodge

“As steep as you want it to be”, Fernie Alpine Resort is a great choice for those looking to push their limits. The resort has 142 trails, 30% of which are advanced, as well as 5 alpine bowls and countless chutes. Beginners are more than welcome at Fernie too, with plenty of greens and blues to choose from across the resort’s 3550 feet of vertical and 2500 acres. The resort sees up to 37 feet of snow every year, making it a great spot to find fresh pow. If downhill isn’t your thing, you can also enjoy 14km of groomed cross country skiing runs. Stay slopeside at Fernie Slopeside Lodge or Lizard Creek Lodge , or get your fill of relaxed ski town vibes staying at this cool studio in town.

Sunridge Ski Area

• Location: 10980 17 St. NW, Edmonton, AB

With 12 runs across 72 acres, you wouldn’t expect this Edmonton-area ski resort to have 45% advanced runs, but Sunridge Ski Area packs a punch! This ski hill inside Edmonton city limits also offers tubing, terrain parks, cross country skiing, and night skiing! Even though the ski area doesn’t quite get the same big dumps as the mountain resorts, it has 100% snowmaking capacity, so you can still enjoy going out for a rip to Sunridge over the entire season! 

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

• Distance from Edmonton: 562 km (~6hr, 15 minutes)
• Accommodation on site? Yes, at many lodges, including Palliser Lodge
• Ability levels: All levels, but mostly advanced

The “Champagne Powder Capital of Canada”, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has epic runs and kick-ass views that just don’t quit. With 120 runs, 45% of which are advanced and 15% of which are expert, Kicking Horse is not for the faint of heart. The resort also has options to heli-ski, giving you even more ways to get your heart pounding over its 3400 acres and impressive 4314 feet of vertical. Beginners will find greens and blues to try as well, but adrenaline lovers from Edmonton will flock to this ski hill. Stay slope side at Palliser Lodge , (among other options ) or relax in this incredible “eco-cabin” in the woods.

Kimberley Alpine Resort

• Distance from Edmonton: 680 km (~7hr, 30 minutes)
• Accommodation on site? Yes, at many lodges, including Timberstone Lodge

Kimberley Alpine Resort is a great option for skiing near Edmonton if you’re looking to get away from it all. The hill itself is nothing to sniff at, with 68 runs, 2465 feet of vertical, and 1800 acres of terrain. The real draw however, is the laidback and genuine feel of the resort, as well as a combination of delicious powder and a penchant towards sunny days. There’s fun for the whole family with a skating rink and night skiing, as well as the Bavarian-style downtown of the town of Kimberley. Stay slopeside  or relax and retreat at this authentic cabin in the woods.

Nakiska Ski Area

• Distance from Edmonton: 385 km (~4hr, 20 minutes)

Set in the awe-inspiring mountains of Kananaskis Country, Nakiska Ski Area is a great spot for snowboarding and skiing near Edmonton, with less crowds than bigger players like Sunshine or Louise. The ski area has 4 lifts and 2 magic carpets, with 79 trails to choose from and 2412 feet of vertical. The runs are 60% intermediate, making it a great spot for beginners wanting to improve their skills. Bonus: the ski area is close to the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge where you’ll find the famed Kananaskis Nordic Spa . You can bomb down runs all day, and treat yourself to a relaxing soak in the pools after.

Snow Valley Edmonton

• Location: 13204 Rainbow Valley Road NW, Edmonton, AB

If you’re itching to get out on the hill during the week, check out Snow Valley Edmonton . The hill has 4 lifts as well as a terrain park and a halfpipe where you can practice your backside 360, and it’s close to home if you don’t have the budget for a big weekend trip to the mountains. With tons of options for lessons, including junior programs and 65+, Snow Valley is perfect for the whole family, even grandma and grandpa!

Edmonton Ski Club

• Location: 9613 96 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB
• Ability levels: Beginner

The price is right at Edmonton Ski Club , with lift tickets for only $10! The facility has five runs: one green, three blues, and one black diamond. There is also a terrain park, tubing and lessons. The Edmonton Ski Club has partnered with Marmot Basin to offer lesson packages that include two days at the club and a full day at the hill in Jasper! The club is a perfect stepping-stone from skiing near Edmonton proper to tackling those big mountain runs, so what are you waiting for? Get shredding!

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Area

If the thought of spending hours on end at the hill doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to put that ski or snowbaord gear to good use, check out the ski area at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. The hill features 12 runs, ranging from green to black diamond, as well as 2 terrain parks and a tubing park. The big draw of the ski area is that a lift ticket doubles as entry to the resort’s famed natural hot springs. Book a weekend at the resort and get the best of both worlds, a fun day on the hill and a soothing soak in the hot springs!

What You Need to Know Before Snowboarding or Skiing Near Edmonton

What to pack:.

• Waterproof outerwear – Possibly the most critical pieces of clothing for your ski trip packing list is durable, waterproof outerwear. 6 Closest Ski Resorts by Edmonton, Canada

As one of the biggest cities in Canada, Edmonton has plenty to do inside the city limits, but taking a bit of a drive outside the town will allow you to explore some excellent skiing options. For those planning an upcoming visit to Alberta and looking for great ski resorts near Edmonton, we’ve curated a list of the closest options.

One of the best things about the ski resorts near Edmonton is the variety of destinations you’ll find. There are some sizable hills with challenging runs as well as family-friendly slopes where you can get out to enjoy a casual day on the snow. Most of the immediate ski areas are smaller hills catering to beginner and intermediate riders.

The biggest resorts in Alberta require a farther drive from Edmonton. The Alberta region of Canada has hot springs too, especially rich in the area west of Calgary.

Here are the ski areas near Edmonton, Alberta, in order of proximity:

Snow Valley Ski – Edmonton: 10 km | 20 minutes

Snow Valley Ski Club is located right in the city of Edmonton meaning visitors don’t even have to leave the city to have some fun on the slopes. At Snow Valley, visitors will find four lifts and eight runs to explore. This small hill is an outstanding spot to get out for some fun after work, or even during your lunch break! With modest prices and a friendly atmosphere, this is a great place to spend time in the winter.

One of the best attractions at Snow Valley is the terrain parks. There’s a beginner park in addition to the main park, and each has a variety of features for you to grow your skills. Some of the notable features in the main park include a flat bar, cannon rail, hip jump, and raised lipstick rail. Experienced terrain riders can knock off the rust here, and it’s also a great place for beginners to get started.

Rabbit Hill – Edmonton: 32 km | 40 minutes

Rabbit Hill is another great option to get on your skis or board without traveling far from the city. Not only can you keep your drive time short by visiting Rabbit Hill, but you can also keep everyone in your party happy.

All levels of skiers and snowboarders will have fun at Rabbit Hill Snow Resort, with runs suitable for total beginners up to black diamond runs. There are also a variety of lift options, including a chairlift, ropes, magic carpets, and T-bars.

Just like Snow Valley, Rabbit Hill also has two terrain parks for you to explore. With an assortment of boxes, rails, and jumps, you’ll be able to challenge yourself all season long. If you need help developing your skills, whether on the slopes or in the terrain park, private and group lessons are available with experienced instructors.

Gwynne Valley – Wetaskiwin CTY: 70 km | 1 hour

Another great option for the whole family to get out and enjoy the snow is Gwynne Valley Ski Area, located to the south of Edmonton. If you are an adult who is just getting into skiing, or maybe you have skied for years and would like to teach your children, Gwynne Valley is perfect.

One of the most nerve-racking experiences new snowboarders and skiers have to accomplish is getting on the lift, and for those who are smaller, this can be a daunting task. A recent addition to Gwynne Valley that speaks to what this friendly destination is all about is the ‘spud lift’, specifically to help kids get up the slope.

While many big mountain resorts can be intimidating places for young people, places like Gwynne Valley Ski Area create opportunities to foster growth and are essential for the future of the sport.

Tawatinaw Valley – Tawatinaw: 96 km | 1.25 hours

As you start to drive a little farther from Edmonton, you begin to find a little more incline and a few more challenging ski runs. Some of those runs can be found at Tawatinaw Valley Ski Area, the largest hill of the aforementioned ski resorts.

This destination has a sizable collection of trails available, ranging from easy to difficult. Among these are a few Black Diamonds such as the Superpipe, Beaver Gully, and Otter’s Slide. Additionally, there are options in the terrain park area for all skill levels, including a mini-park for beginners and the main park with bigger features.

Looking for a change of pace from downhill skiing? Tawatinaw also offers tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Medicine Lodge Ski – Bentley: 162 km | 1.75 hours

Continuing the theme from much of this article, we have another hill that is all about having a great time with family and friends. They keep things simple at Medicine Lodge Ski Area, and that’s a good thing.

Ride the T-bar up to the top and pick from one of a few runs to make your way back down. Thanks to modest pricing and a welcoming environment, you might find yourself returning to this ski area week after week during the season.

Misty Ridge Ski Hill – Neerlandia: 157 km | 2 hours

At Misty Ridge Ski Hill, you will find something that you don’t see at many similar resorts: the ability to make snow. That alone is enough to put this destination on your map if Mother Nature hasn’t been providing much fresh powder.

In addition to making their own snow, Misty Ridge also offers an excellent bunny hill for those who are just learning how to ski or snowboard. It’s not always easy for beginners to find a place to practice without getting in the way of more experienced skiers.

With such a long bunny slope available, you’ll have plenty of room to practice turning and stopping. The practice time you put in at community-operated Misty Ridge Ski Hill could help you conquer many bigger mountains later on.

Taking a Ski Trip from Edmonton

As our list has established, the skiing options in the Edmonton area are mostly smaller hills with a limited number of runs and a few extra features. These can be great spots, but they aren’t going to scratch the itch when you are looking for that big mountain experience.

For that, you’ll need to take a bit of a road trip to get up into the Rockies. Fortunately, if you are willing to drive for a few hours or more, you can find some outstanding ski destinations.

In Jasper, Marmot Basin is an excellent option with over 1,700 skiable acres and a base elevation of more than 5,500 feet. The longest run here stretches out to 3.5 miles, so you’ll definitely be able to put those skills that you built on the smaller hills to the test here. With 91 total runs, 7 lifts, and two terrain parks, this is a mountain that’s certainly worth the drive.

Further south in the Rockies, you can find a variety of ski and snowboard options worthy of your attention. Some of the best ski resorts near Calgary include Lake Louise Ski Resort, Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Nakiska Ski Area. With so many great local hills and the big mountain resorts within a day’s drive, Edmonton is a prime home base for a winter full of powdery fun.

Edmonton Ski Club

Located in the heart of the Edmonton downtown river valley Edmonton Ski Club has been in operation since 1911. Preparing for a new net zero carbon neutral facility the old lodge has been demolished and a new interim day lodge installed. Offering enhanced facilities for the 2022/23 season Edmonton Ski Club features a T Bar, Carpet lift, and two handle tows servicing exciting urban terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels to explore along with Tubing and Ice climbing available onsite. Featuring a mini grom park, progressive learning park, spacious beginner area, moguls, and Edmonton’s steepest pitch for the advance skier or snowboarder. We are easily available via public transit, close to the university and feature the best view in Edmonton.

Holiday Camps

Between December 26 – 30 and January 2-6, the Edmonton Ski Club is offering Kinder Kids (ages 4-6), Juniors (ages 7-12) and Teen (ages 13-17) winter camps.

Each camp is priced at $250 and runs from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM daily during its scheduled week, with one instructional hour, one tubing hour, a half-hour lunch break and two fifteen-minute snack breaks. The camp fee includes full day rentals and lift tickets. Camps are offered at both beginner and intermediate levels.

KidSki and KidsBoard drop-in sessions

If your child has previous experience skiing or snowboarding, the Edmonton Ski Club’s KidSki and KidsBoard drop-in sessions are a great option for them! For just $19.95 per drop-in session, participants get full instruction and an evening lift ticket. Rentals are available free of charge if required. Sessions occur on Friday evenings up to March 17 2023, with the exception of December 30. KidSki and KidsBoard are among our most popular programs. Enroll today to secure your child’s ticket to fun!

KidSki and KidsBoard sessions were made possible by funding by the Government of Alberta and KidSport Alberta.

Try out tubing against the Downtown skyline in the Edmonton Ski Club’s Tube Park! Afterwards, drop by our interim lodge for a hot drink and a snack. Tubing makes for a great family-friendly activity, especially over the holidays.

Our rates include a lift ticket for the day, or more if you choose to stay overnight. No more ticket line-ups, so you’re on the mountain shredding faster.

Transportation

The MagicBus is a 56 passenger luxury motor coach. It’s family friendly (non-drinking, non-smoking), washroom equipped, and hosted by a MagicBus Tour Director.

Taxes & Fees

MagicBus rates include National Park fees when applicable and are always tax in. The price shown is exactly what you pay; there’s no rate increase at the end of your booking. 

If you choose to stay overnight, your accommodations will also be included in your price! Choose from one of many great hotel options in Jasper.

Need to Know the Specifics?

Our buses do sell out frequently (especially Saturdays) so you should book as soon as possible. Generally, for daytrips if you book 3-4 days in advance you should get a spot, and for overnights you want to book a week or more in advance to ensure availability. 

MagicBus accepts riders of all ages and is a family friendly bus hosted by Tour Directors. Riders that are 13 years and older can ride without a parent or guardian onboard. A waiver will need to be signed for all minors. Overnight stays require at least one adult (18 years or older) in the room. 

There is either no bus running that day or it has likely sold out. Please note, it’s possible for a depart and return bus on the same day to have different availabilities due to overnight passengers. Contact us to be put on a waitlist as people do cancel!

Yes, you can find the “transportation only” rate  here . To book this, go to our  Book Now  page and on step 5: Lift Tickets, select the option “pick and choose”. Here you may un-check the required lift tickets for each person. We offer a discounted transportation only rate for seasons pass holders and Marmot Escape Card holders. Yes! You can totally ride the bus as a 1-way transportation, you can find the rate here. But to ensure the trip goes smoothly, we ask that you call us to book your tour, you can do so by clicking here.

Free parking is available right where the bus departs from (the back side of the Edmonton Inn). Please make sure your vehicle is locked up with no valuables inside. MagicBus Tours is not responsible for stolen/damaged items.

Please note:

• The calendar allows selection of any dates; please confirm there are scheduled buses for your desired dates on the Departure schedule above.
• Prices are per person and include a lift ticket per person, per day. Prices also include round transportation, all taxes and National Park fees if applicable.
• Single means one adult per room, double means two, triple means three and quad means four. Only those age 18 and up affect room occupancy. For example: Two adults and one youth/junior/child will be considered a double room rate per parent, plus the price of the youth/junior/child "staying with parents".
• Youths, Juniors, and Children must be staying in a room with at least one person age 18 or older.
• Bed sharing may be required.
• Your rate generation and online booking do not confirm hotel availability.
• Final rates at time of booking are subject to change based on supplier availability.

Non-Skiing Deductions:

Deduct the appropriate non-ski rate (ie. adult, student, youth) for each day you do not require a lift ticket. There are no non-ski deductions for juniors or children.

With a healthy dose of snow on the ground, it’s officially ski season in Edmonton. Sure, heading to the Rockies may be the preferred location for skiing, but when time’s a constraint, there are some great ski options right here in the city.  Most locations offer online reservations for lift tickets so be sure to check availability before you go!

Edmonton Ski Club

Edmonton Ski Club is now open for the 2023-24 season. Featuring a bunny hill for beginners up to a Black Diamond run and even a Terrain Park, there’s something for everyone. Not interested in skiing? Check out their snow tube hill! Plus, the view of the downtown skyline from the top of the hill on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River is one of the best in the city!

Rabbit Hill

You’ll find Rabbit Hill Snow Resort just south of Edmonton in Leduc County. There are 4 beginner routes, 2 intermediate routes, and an advanced route along with several terrain parks and even a skill development area. Rabbit Hill even offers adaptive snowsport options including instruction for cognitively disabled, learning disabled, visually impaired, and hearing impaired.

Rejoice! The snowy season is upon us once again. Downhill (alpine) skiing in Alberta is some of the best in the world, and many people from far and wide plan their vacations here around the activity. Besides the amazing landscapes Alberta and the Canadian Rocky Mountains offer, skiers and snowboarders will find some of the best ski resorts and powder in the world.

The most difficult decision visitors have to make is choosing which resort they’ll visit. This guide will answer all your questions about skiing in Alberta and give top recommendations for ski hills and resorts throughout the province.

Alberta Ski Season

Having seven months of winter certainly helps Alberta’s ski situation. Skiing in Alberta typically starts in November and ends in May, but it all depends on the snowfall. There have been seasons when the snow comes early and ends late. With the high elevation in the Rocky Mountains, the deep snow base can stick around.

Alberta Ski Resorts

Banff Ski Resorts

There are three main resorts within Banff National Park: Sunshine Village, Mount Norquay, and Lake Louise Ski Resort. They are all world-class ski resorts and are marketed together as the Big 3.

The closest airport to Banff National Park is Calgary International Airport, and the driving time from there is approximately 90 minutes. There are also plenty of shuttles and other options to make the journey – see our complete guide to getting from Calgary to Banff to plan the trip.

Sunshine Village Ski Resort

Banff Sunshine Village is one of Alberta and Canada’s most popular ski resorts. It’s famous for the crazy amounts of snow (average snowfall is over 9 metres) and three different mountains with ski runs.

Getting here: From the Banff townsite, it’s only a 15-minute drive west to Sunshine Village; just follow the signs right from Highway 1. Be sure to arrive early, as the parking lot at the base of the resort gets packed. If you are not driving, there are shuttle options from Banff Village .

Number of runs: 139 Number of lifts: 12 (One 8 person gondola, 7 high-speed quads, 2 fixed-grip quads, and 2 beginner conveyors)

Sunshine’s terrain is wide open and it feels like there is an endless amount of terrain spread across three mountain peaks. Almost hidden from sight are Delirium Dive and the Wild West, two of the steepest and most technical lift-access zones in Canada. These advanced skier areas require users to wear an avalanche transceiver, carry both a shovel and probe and ski with a partner.

Lift Tickets : Sunshine Village lift tickets or a Sunshine Village Ski pass can be purchased online or directly at the resort.

Half-day, multi-day, and a full-season pass can also be purchased online in advance. You can also purchase mobile tickets that will save you a few dollars. Avid skiers can also purchase the Sunshine Super Card, which will get you three free days of skiing throughout the season and discounts in November and May.

Other Amenities: It’s possible to plan your whole ski vacation at Sunshine Village. Staying at Banff’s only mountain-top hotel, guests at Sunshine Mountain Lodge are treated to extraordinary luxury and breathtaking scenery atop the Canadian Rockies. There are eight restaurants to choose from and three different coffee bars. And the activities don’t stop at skiing! Enjoy the outdoor hot tub, take a pair of snowshoes and go hiking in the Banff back-country, or unwind at the Verde Day Spa.

Lake Louise Ski Resort

Lake Louise Ski Resort was voted 2018 World’s Best Family Ski Resort for good reason. With four mountain faces to cruise down, skiers can explore gentle slopes to long chutes. For the experienced skier, it can be some of the most challenging terrain in the Canadian Rockies.

Getting to Lake Louise Ski Resort: The Lake Louise Ski Resort is approximately 40 minutes (60 km or 36 miles) west of the town of Banff. If driving, you will need to take Highway 1 west from Banff and follow the signs from the highway. There are also shuttle and bus options which will take you directly to the resort from Banff.

Number of runs: 164 Number of lifts: 10 (1 gondola, 7 chairs, 3 conveyors)

The recently added West Bowl adds to the wide-open alpine-style terrain available to expert skiers, but Whitehorn still offers the biggest terrain on the mountain. Beginner and intermediate skiers have few limitations at Lake Louise, with runs accessible on the front and back sides to explore. Installed last season was the Juniper Express Chair, the third base area lift to get skiers up the mountain faster! Plus, a new beginner and intermediate area and plans to build another high-speed quad chair.

Lift Tickets : Lake Louise lift tickets or a Lake Louise season pass can be purchased online or directly at the resort. Note that there are discounts for the early season pricing, so get out there now!

A full season pass can be purchased online, or consider a Lake Louise Plus Card, which can get you crazy-good discounts.

Other Amenities: Although there is no hotel or accommodations at the ski resort, there are plenty of places to stay in Lake Louise Village. There are plenty of options for dining and apres-ski at Lake Louise Ski Resort. There are eight different cafes, pubs, and base area dining options, including the Powder Keg Lounge for cold beers and Kuma Yama for an in-lodge sushi bar. For a more intimate dining experience, be sure to try the Whitehorn Bistro for its upscale menu and beautiful mountain views.

If skiing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other things to do in Lake Louise . Grab your camera and go for a beautiful scenic guided snowshoe tour. Take the gondola up the mountain for a scenic view of the Lake Louise valley. Or, for some real snow thrills, try the sunny tube park!

Mount Norquay Ski Resort

Since the 1930’s skiers have given the thumbs up to Norquay ski resort . It’s known as the “locals” ski hill and boasts unbeatable views of Banff from above. There are hills for every skill level, and has been voted as one of the best hills to learn how to alpine ski.

Getting here: Mt Norquay Ski Resort is the closest ski resort to the Banff townsite – being only 6 km away, it’s a quick 7-minute drive up the mountain. There is also a free shuttle to Norquay from various hotels in Banff that will bring you and your equipment to the resort.

Number of runs: 60 Number of lifts: 6 (1 high-speed quad, 2 fixed grip quads, 1 double chair, 2 surface chairs)

In the spring, Mt Norquay catches the upslope storms that bring snow into the Bow Valley. Because it’s smaller than its two Ski Big 3 counterparts, it often goes unnoticed. Catching fresh tracks in the steep terrain off the top of the North American chairlift is something of a rite of passage for Bow Valley residents. The rest of the mountain has great beginner and intermediate terrain, and lift lines are extremely rare.

Lift Tickets : Norquay lift tickets or a Norquay ski pass can be purchased online or directly at the resort. Half-day tickets, night skiing, or a full-season pass can also be purchased online.

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations at the Norquay ski resort, but being so close to the townsite, there are plenty of options for places to stay in Banff. Food options are never a concern at Norquay, with four different spots to refuel. Our recommendation is the Cliffhouse Bistro: a transformed tea-house with a retro look of a Euro chalet and boasts one of the most scenic spots in the Rockies for a bite to eat.

There’s plenty more to the Norquay than just skiing. Rent a pair of snowshoes and head off on one of five marked trails into the backcountry for deep powder and stunning views. Or, if you are seeking a little fun and thrill, rip down the mountain on a snow tube. There are eight lanes for tubing, and it’s the biggest snow tube park in Alberta. Finally, if you are just wanting to capture an incredible view, then why not take advantage of a Norquay sightseeing ticket and take in the fresh mountain air and a bird’s eye view of Banff townsite?

Jasper National Park Ski Resorts

Marmot basin.

There’s something special about skiing at Marmot Basin ; it’s one of the best mountains for skiing in Alberta. Besides being the highest base elevation of any Canadian ski area, skiers are treated to a pristine, uncrowded feel. With over 1,700 acres of skiable terrain on five different mountain faces, there is surely a run for every skill level of skier. The resort also boasts of having the longest high-speed quad chair in the Canadian Rockies, stretching 2.3 kilometres long.

Getting here: Marmot Basin Ski Resort is 21km from the Jasper townsite. Unfortunately, there is no shuttle from the Jasper townsite to Marmot Basin, but there are taxis (Caribou Cabs and Mountain Express Taxi) that can get you to the resort. During the ski season, there are also daily shuttle options from Edmonton to Marmot Basin .

If you are starting your journey from Alberta’s capital city, be prepared for up to a five-hour trip to Jasper. There are plenty of options to get you there, and you can start planning your trip by reading our guide on getting from Edmonton to Jasper .

Beginner and intermediate skiers will truly appreciate Marmot Basin’s varied terrain. Every lift accesses at least one green or blue run, and few resorts can match the length and variety of this terrain. Expert skiers aiming to get off-piste will appreciate Tres Hombres, a 45-acre bowl accessed by the Paradise Chair; Eagles East, accessed by the Eagle Ridge Chair; or Charlie’s bowl, found atop the Knob Chair.

Other Amenities: There is no lodging at the Marmot Basin Ski Resort, but there are plenty of options for accommodations in Jasper .

Finding a bite to eat at Marmot Basin is easy, with three different chalets to refuel and get you back out on the slopes. There is also a store on-site in case you forget a necessary piece of gear and need to buy something.

Other Popular Mountain Skiing in Alberta

Nakiska ski resort (kananaskis).

It’s all about the location of the Nakiska Ski Area. Nestled in Kananaskis Country, it’s a unique ski resort, not being near a ski town. The ski hill was built for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, and the mountain is well known for its long ski seasons and immaculately groomed trails. 

Getting here: Arriving at Nakiska by car is easy. From Calgary, it’s 83km away by taking Highway 1 west, turning south on Highway 40, and then following the signs to the resort. The nearest towns to Nakiska are Canmore (56km away) and Banff (81km away). Note that there are no shuttles to the resort, so it’s best to plan your own transportation.

Lift Tickets : Nakiska lift tickets or a Nakiska ski pass can be purchased online or directly at the hill. Note that the price may vary based on the day you want to ski.

Other Amenities: If you plan on skiing at Nakiska and spending a night, we recommend staying at the world-class Kananaskis Mountain Lodge . The lodge is right next door to the ski resort, making it easy to get back and forth from the ski hill.

There are five different dining options at the Nakiska ski area. Depending on your mood, you can grab a quick bite at the cafeteria or enjoy a burger and beer at the Finish Line Lounge. 

Are you not planning on skiing? You can rent a pair of snowshoes and play in all the snow. There are options to take a tour or head off and explore on your own. For some winter fun, be sure to check out the Wanidu Tube park to cruise down the hill.

Castle Mountain Ski Resort (Castle Provincial Park)

In 1965, the T-bar lift and Swiss-style lodge were built on Castle Mountain. Fifty years later Castle Mountain Resort is the most popular ski resort offering exciting terrain that many southern Albertans have enjoyed for years. With the opening of Mount Haig in 2005, Castle Mountain offers fantastic ski options to a wide range of skiers.

Getting here: The nearest airports to fly into are Calgary International Airport (YYC) or Lethbridge Airport (YQL). From Calgary, it’s 244km or about a two and half hour’s drive. Head south towards Pincher Creek, turn into Pincher Creek, and simply follow the signs to Castle Provincial Park. Here are detailed instructions to arrive at Castle Mountain ski resort. Note that there are no shuttles that run to Castle Mountain Resort.

Lift Tickets : Castle Mountain lift tickets or a multi-day Castle Mountain ski pass can be purchased online (and you can save up to 20% by doing so!) or directly at the resort. Note that higher prices may be charged depending on the day of the week.

Consider the Wonders of Winter (WOW) card that will save you plenty of money. Cardholders receive unlimited 50% off days, with no blackouts, at Castle Mountain Resort. The cards are on sale until December 24, or quantities run out.

Buying a lift ticket online seven days in advance will get you a discount, and there are options to buy a Castle Mountain full season pass as well. 

Other Amenities: There are options to stay at Castle Mountain Ski Resort, including the Castle Ski Lodge, which has ski-in-ski-out condos. There are also multiple bed and breakfasts nearby. In addition, castle has dining options at the resort, including a pub for apres-ski, a cafe, and a cafeteria.

One unique activity Castle Ski Resort offers is cat-skiing. The cat will give skiers access to more than 900 acres of terrain and some of the best snow in North America. And for something other than skiing, guided snowshoeing tours (with a $10 pub credit included) are offered, or bring your camera along for a scenic snow-cat tour.

Pass Powderkeg Ski Resort (Crowsnest Pass)

Nestled in the heart of the Crowsnest Pass, Pass Powderkeg mountain is a little mountain that is big enough to offer trails for all difficulty levels. Since 1938, everything about Pass Powderkeg has remained authentic, including the beloved T-bars, bringing big smiles to all its visitors. One of the best things about Pass Powderkeg is one of the longest night skiing runs in Canada and a Terrain Park for everyone to play under the stars.

Getting here: Pass Powderkeg is situated in the town of Blairmore, AB, in the middle of the Crowsnest Pass. Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Lethbridge Airport (YQL) are nearest airports. From Calgary, head southwest for a scenic 220km drive which will take approximately 2 ½ hours.

Lift Tickets : Pass Powderkeg lift tickets , or a PassPowderkeg ski pass can be purchased online or directly at the resort. There are also discounts for half-days, night skiing, and during the week.

*Note Pass Powderkeg ski area is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations directly at the ski resort, but there are plenty of places to stay nearby. We recommend either the York Creek Bed and Breakfast or Country Encounters Accommodations.

Be sure not to miss the restaurant at Pass Powderkeg. After a full day of skiing, visitors can relax in the lodge soaking in the spectacular mountain views to go with their meal. From comfort foods (be sure to try the brussel sprouts!) to more adventurous options, there is something on the menu for everyone.

Although the ski resort offers no extra activities, there are plenty of options for things to do in the Crowsnest Pass area , including hiking and snowshoeing.

Popular Non-Mountain Skiing in Alberta

Not all skiing in Alberta has to be in the mountains. There are plenty of options that offer up a fun day! Here are some of the most popular spots:

Calgary Olympic Park – Winsport (Calgary)

There is good skiing in Calgary at WinSport (formerly known as Canada Olympic Park). The ski area also offers an array of winter sports catering to all ability levels, including a terrain park boasting a half-pipe that is a replica of what is used in the Winter Olympics. From the beginner (lessons are available) to the high-performance athlete, the WinSport ski area presents a fun day of skiing for everyone.

Getting here: Located on the west side of Calgary along the Trans Canada Trail (highway 1), WinSport is easy to access from any point in the city. 

Number of runs: 13 Number of lifts: 8 (2 chairlifts, 4 T-bars, 2 magic carpets)

Lift Tickets : Winsport lift tickets or a Winsport annual ski pass can be purchased online or directly at the resort. Prices may vary from the below depending on the day you go.

Other Amenities: There are no on-site accommodations at WinSport, but there are plenty of options for hotels nearby, and we recommend the Sheraton Four Points West . For food and beverage, there is a cafeteria at WinSport to make sure skiers are refuelled.

If you’re looking for something other than skiing at WinSport, there are a variety of activities, including a tube park .

Rabbit Hill Snow Resort (Edmonton)

In the scenic North Saskatchewan river valley is Rabbit Hill Snow Resort . The resort is Edmonton’s largest local ski and snowboard area, with over 40 acres of ski and snowboard trails.

Getting here: Rabbit Hill Snow Resort is located approximately 25 km southwest of Edmonton. The resort is just north of Highway 19 and is accessible by several different routes.

Lift Tickets : Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the ski hill. There are also discounts for half days, students, and super seniors (age 70+). A full-season pass can be purchased online as well. 

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations at Rabbit Hill Snow Resort, but check out this article on Edmonton hotels to get ideas. There is a cafeteria on-site for food and beverage options to have a quick bite to eat so you can refuel and get back on the slopes.

Snow Valley Ski Hill (Edmonton)

The Snow Valley Ski Hill is a small ski resort in the west end of Edmonton. It offers Edmontonians and visitors a decent option to get out and ski without leaving the city. 

Getting here: The ski hill is located right off Whitemud Drive and can be accessed from either the east or west end of Edmonton.

Number of runs: 8 Number of lifts: 4 (1 quad chair, 1 triple chair, 2 magic carpets)

Lift Tickets : Both lift tickets and season passes can be purchased online or at the resort.

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations at the Snow Valley Ski Area, but plenty of options to stay in Alberta’s capital city (see our guide to the best Edmonton hotels to stay at). The Lodge at Snow Valley is a beautiful setting with tall walls of glass overlooking Edmonton’s Rainbow Valley, which offers food and beverage options to its visitors.

Canyon Ski Resort (Red Deer)

Being Alberta’s largest non-mountain ski area, Canyon Ski Resort has 80 acres of skiable terrain. The resort is sure to offer challenges for any level of skier and is winter fun for everyone; plus, they offer night skiing three times per week.

Getting here: The Canyon Ski Resort is located 8 minutes east of Red Deer. There are no shuttles that run to the resort, but there is a bus that runs there.

Family lift tickets and half-day tickets can also be purchased in advance online.

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations on-site at Canyon Ski Resort, but there are plenty of options to stay nearby (and lots of things to do in Red Deer as well). For food and beverage, there is a rustic lodge, a cafeteria and a cozy lounge for apres-ski beers. 

In addition to skiing, a popular attraction at the resort is the two-lane (groomed) tube park with a dedicated tubing lift offering lots of fun.

Hidden Valley Ski Resort (Elkwater / Cypress Hills)

Winter fun is what Hidden Valley Ski Resort is all about! Nestled in the Cypress Hills Provincial Park , Hidden Valley Ski Resort is a unique Alpine Resort. 

Getting here: Hidden Valley Ski Resort is 65km southeast of Medicine Hat and in the heart of Cypress Hills Provincial Park. A daily shuttle operates from the Medicine Hat Lodge for $15 return or free with a season pass.

Lift Tickets : Hidden Valley lift tickets or ski passes can be purchased online or directly at the resort. 

There are also multi-day and half-day discounts available for purchase online.

Other Amenities: There are no accommodations on-site at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, but there is an option to stay at the beautiful Elkwater Lake Lodge or the Reesor Ranch, which are both in the Provincial Park. For food, the Hidden Valley Lodge has a cafe, brown bag lunch areas and the Snowflake Lounge to make sure the skiers are fed and hydrated.

There are plenty of activities to take part in within the provincial park and close to the ski hill, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and fishing.

Skiing in Alberta: Equipment Rentals

If you plan on skiing in Alberta and need equipment, you can rent ski and snowboard equipment at any of the ski resorts. Although it is much more economical to bring your own or rent equipment from the city and bring it to the slopes. Here are some popular spots in the cities and towns to rent equipment:

Also, don’t forget to dress for the elements, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Be sure to have a warm winter coat, snow pants, gloves, and a cool toque (wool hat).

Ski touring, alpine ski touring, and ski mountaineering

Jasper national park.

Jasper National Park offers a wide range of easy short ski touring, alpine ski touring and ski mountaineering day trips to long multi-day glacial traverses. These areas are often in wild and uncontrolled avalanche and glacier terrain. The cold dry snowpack, famous for its spectacular light powder, is typically weak and unstable during the early winter (December, January) and backcountry ski travel is often difficult at this time. Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing at the lift-serviced ski area and ski touring in the valley bottoms are all that can be recommended during this part of the season. The snowpack can normally be depended upon to provide a solid enough base to carry off-piste and backcountry skiers by mid-February, but this is also when the larger avalanches of the season occur so careful route-finding is imperative on mountain trails and routes. The alpine touring season improves from February onward and is recommended through April and May on the Icefields and peaks along the Continental Divide.

Venturing into the backcountry of Jasper National Park requires a basic level of avalanche knowledge and self-reliance. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains, and temperatures may drop to as low as -40 degrees Celsius, even in March. Avalanches are a common occurrence. Do not venture onto glaciated terrain unless everyone in your group is properly equipped and familiar with safe glacier travel, crevasse rescue techniques, and whiteout navigation skills. Considerable level of skill and knowledge is required to navigate through ATES type 2 and 3 avalanche terrain ( Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale ). Avalanche educational courses are offered through the Avalanche Canada .

No avalanche control takes place in the backcountry other than for the purposes of highway corridor avalanche control. Daily backcountry Avalanche Bulletins are prepared by professional avalanche forecasters in the Visitor Safety Program between December and April. The Jasper avalanche forecast covers the area from the Maligne Valley south to Saskatchewan River Crossing in Banff National Park. These forecasts can be viewed online and can be found posted in the Jasper Information Centre and at local retailers.

The avalanche danger can change rapidly with changing weather. Be observant of changing conditions and early warning signs during your ski trip. Be willing to turn around if conditions are not safe. Before heading out be sure to check the mountain weather forecast on-line with Avalanche Canada .

Avalanche control

The Icefields Parkway and the road to Maligne Lake travel through many avalanche paths, which are posted with signs marking their start and end points. Do not stop or park between these signs as you are at danger from avalanches here.

Avalanche control activities take place along these sections of highways, and the road may be closed during these times for several days at a time. Road updates are available through  Alberta 511 or through real-time updates and anticipatory closures on twitter @ParksMntSafety . Un-detonated explosives may be encountered in these areas.

Do not move or touch any objects that you suspect are explosives and report them immediately to Jasper Dispatch by calling 780-852-6155.

Emergencies

If you are calling for assistance using a cell, call 911. If using a satellite phone call +1-780-852-3100 for Jasper emergency dispatch. Preprogram this into your device.

Trip preparation

• Pick an objective that is within your ability and have an alternate plan in case conditions changes. For popular trips, check the  Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale .
• Research the trail or trip. Guidebooks can be purchased at local retail stores in the area.
• Check the backcountry Avalanche Bulletin on line.
• Check the weather forecast on line.
• Let someone at home know your plans for the day and when you are expected back.
• Go with a friend.
• Take your avalanche safety gear and know how to use it if you are venturing into avalanche terrain.
• Be prepared to be self-sufficient if you encounter bad weather or have an accident by packing the right clothing and emergency equipment.
• As you drive to the trailhead observe the landscape and what the weather is doing. Ask yourself is the avalanche danger changing. Look for signs of recent avalanche activity and be prepared to change your objectives for the day.
• Check the information boards at the trailheads.

Season length

Snow cover varies greatly with elevation. On the ice caps in the park, skiing is possible year round. At lower elevations in the valley bottoms skiing is between early December and April.

Seasonal closures for caribou conservation

From November to the middle of May, access to occupied caribou ranges is closed to prevent people from creating packed trails that could give wolves access to important winter caribou habitat. In Jasper National Park, critical caribou habitat is protected by law under Canada’s Species at Risk Act .
