Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the second busiest airport in the U.S., serving over 30 million passengers in 2021. The airport is bigger than Manhattan and is so large that it has its own ZIP code. Despite its size, itâs an easy airport to navigate with a convenient light rail service running between all terminals.
DFW is the main hub for American Airlines with the airline solely occupying 3 of the 5 terminals.
Hereâs all the information you need to know on how to navigate DFW and ensure you get to your gate efficiently.
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was designed to reduce traffic congestion within the terminals and therefore speed up services such as the Terminal Link shuttle bus. The terminals are all accessible individually from the International Parkway/ State Highway Spur 97 that runs from north to south of the airport.
The terminals are shaped like semicircles, apart from Terminal D, with parking lots, ground transportation, and pre-security departure and arrival facilities situated on the inside of the semicircle. The departure gates and Skylink train are located post-security on the outside of the semicircle where only ticketed passengers are permitted.
Terminals C and D have airport hotels either located within the terminal or just outside the terminal. Each terminal has its own shops, cafes, lounges, and restaurants with the widest selection being in Terminal D, also known as the international terminal.
DFW Ground Transportation Pre-security
In some situations, you may need to connect between terminals outside of the secure area, and the best way to do this is via the free Terminal Link shuttle bus . The Terminal Link shuttle bus stops at all terminals from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. with an out-of-hours service available by calling 972-574-5465.
Buses operate every 5 to 10 minutes from the departures level of each terminal, excluding Terminal D where pick-up and drop-off are from the arrivals level. There are 2 pick-up points at each terminal signposted â Terminal Link.â
Terminal Link shuttle buses operate from:
- Entrance A10 for gate A1 to gate A20 and DFW Airport DART Rail Station
- Entrance A16 for gate A21 to gate A39
- Entrance B14 for gate B1 to gate B25
- Entrance B43 for gate B26 to gate B49 and DFW Airport TEXRail Station
- Entrance C4 for gate C1 to gate C20
- Entrance C30 for gate C21 to gate C39
- Entrance at Lower Level D17 for gate D1 to gate D22
- Entrance at Lower Level D29 for gate D23 to gate D40
- Entrance E14 for gate E2 to gate E18
- Entrance E35 for gate E20 to gate E38
DFW has a convenient airside people mover called Skylink, with 2 Skylink stations located at either end of each terminal depending on which gate you need to reach. The Skylink is free to use and operates clockwise and counter-clockwise , so you can choose the direction with the quickest journey to your desired terminal.
Trains depart every 2 minutes , and it takes a maximum of 9 minutes to travel between the furthest points. The Skylink runs post-security for the full journey, so passengers need to clear security to utilize this transportation.
Skylink stations are located:
- Between gate A13 and gate A16
- Between gate A29 and gate A34
- Between gate B9 and gate B12
- Between gate B28 and gate B31
- Between gate C8 and gate C12
- Between gate C27 and gate C32
- Between gate D11 and gate D20
- Between gate D24 and gate D34
- Between gate E8 and gate E11
- Between gate E31 and gate E32
Layout of DFW Terminals
Terminal A is located on the east side of the airport, opposite Terminal B and next to Terminal C. There are 26 gates numbered A8 to A11, A13 to A25, A28, A29, and A33 to A39, with the lower numbered gates located at the north of the semicircle through to the higher numbered gates at the south.
Terminal A is connected to Terminals B and C via post-security walkways if youâre looking to walk between terminals.
To reach Terminal B, you can cross over the Skylink tunnel, with moving walkways, that is located opposite gate A39, up the escalator/elevator at the south end of Terminal A. To reach Terminal C from Terminal A, walk along the connector tunnel, with moving walkways, that is located next to gate A39 on the same level.
If you would prefer to take the Skylink train between terminals, then the Terminal A stations are located between gates A13 and A16 and between gates A29 and A34 up the escalator/elevator on Level 3.
If you have to exit the secure area, then you can pick up the Terminal Link shuttle bus from outside the terminal on the departures level, entry/exit A10 for gates A1 to A20, and entry/exit A16 for gates A21 to A39.
Hot Tip: If youâre connecting from the higher numbered gates of Terminal A to the lower numbered gates of Terminals B or C, then it may be quicker for you to walk rather than catch the Skylink, due to the locations of the Skylink stations.Â
Terminal B has 44 gates numbered B1 to B11, B12A, B12B, B14 to B17, B19, B21, B22, and B24 to B44, and B46 to B49 with the higher numbered gates located at the north of the terminal and the lower numbered gates at the south. The terminal is situated on the west side of the airport, opposite Terminal A and beside Terminal D, both of which are accessible by the Skylink train or connecting walkways .
To reach Terminal A by foot, take the escalator/elevator near gate B4 to level 3 and cross over the Skylink using the moving walkways. To reach Terminal D, continue around the corner near gate B4, past gates B1 and B3 through the walkway until you reach Terminal D. There are no moving walkways on this route.
To reach Terminal C by foot, walk across the connector bridge to Terminal A and take a right at gate A39 to walk through the walkway to Terminal C.
The Skylink train stations are located between gates B9 and B12 and between gates B28 and B31 , where you take the escalator/elevator to level 3 to access the train. The Skylink train can transport you to other terminals if you can remain airside; however, if you leave the secure area, then take the Terminal Link shuttle bus from outside the terminal at the departures level, near entry/exit B14 for gates B1 to B25 or B43 for gates B26 to B49.
Hot Tip: It may be quicker for you to walk than take the Skylink train if youâre connecting from the lower numbered gates of Terminal B to the higher numbered gates of terminals A or D. Check where the Skylink stations are located in relation to your gate number to help make your decision.
Terminal C is located on the east side of the airport, opposite Terminal D with Terminal A and terminal E on either side. Terminal C is connected to Terminals A and D via airside walkways but is not connected to Terminal E.
There are 28 gates in Terminal C numbered C2, C4, C6 to C8, C10 to C12, C14 to C17, C19 to C22, C24, C26 to C31, C33, and C35 to C39, with the lower numbered gates in the north of the terminal and the higher number gates in the south.
To connect to Terminal A by foot, follow the walkway around to the right after gate C2, or to connect to Terminal D, take the escalator/elevator near gate C2 to level 3 and walk across the Skylink connector bridge. To connect to any of the terminals, you can ride the Skylink train, with stations accessible between gates C8 and C12 or between gates C27 and C32 .
Hot Tip: If youâre connecting from the lower-numbered gates of Terminal C to the higher-numbered gates of terminals A or D, it might be quicker to walk instead of taking the Skylink train. You may even find it quicker to walk to gates B1 to B3 as these gates are located in the walkway between terminals D and B.Â
Terminal D consists of 28 gates numbered D5 to D8, D10 to D12, D14 to D18, D20 to D25, D27 to D31, D33, D34, D36 to D38, and D40, with the higher numbered gates at the northern end of the terminal and the lower numbered gates at the southern end.
Terminal D is located on the west side of the airport, opposite Terminal C and beside Terminal B with both connected via airside walkways .
To reach Terminal B from Terminal D, walk past gate D40 and follow the walkway around to the hallway between the 2 terminals. This is on the same level as departures and connects to the departures area of Terminal B with the lower gate numbers.
The Skylink train can be picked up between gates D11 and D20 or between gates D24 and D34 and stops at all terminals.
As Terminal D operates international flights, it is likely that on arrival you will end up outside of the secure area after clearing customs and immigration. If you have a flight connection with your bags checked to your final destination, then you can re-check these at the flight connections bag drop area, re-clear security, and ride the Skylink to your connecting terminal.
If you have to connect outside of security, then you can ride the Terminal Link shuttle bus from outside of Terminal D. These depart regularly from the arrivals level at entry/exit D17 for gates D1 to D22 and D29 for gates D23 to D40.
Hot Tip: If youâve booked 2 separate tickets and are connecting with American Airlines, then you will be able to check in for your connecting flight at the American desk in Terminal D. You can then re-clear security and ride the Skylink train from Terminal D to your connecting terminal, rather than catching the Terminal Link shuttle bus that can be slower.Â
Terminal E is the only terminal that is not connected to another terminal with any walkways and is located on the east side of the airport next to Terminal C.
Terminal E has 26 gates numbered E2, E4 to E18, E20, E21, E22, E22B, E23, E23B, E24, E24B, E25, E25A E25B, E26, E27, E27B, E28, E29A, E29B, and E30 to E38. The lower-numbered gates are located at the northern end of the terminal and the higher-numbered gates are at the southern end.
Gates E22, E22B, E23, E23B, E24, E24B, E25, E25A E25B, E26, E27, E27B, E28, E29A, E29B, and E30 are located at terminal Eâs satellite terminal that is accessible via an underground tunnel near gate E21.
Terminal E is connected to the other terminals via the Skylink train. However, if you are connecting to terminal E from outside of the secure area of another terminal, then you wouldnât be able to access the train as the stations are located post-security.
To connect to terminal E outside of the secure area, youâll need to ride the Terminal Link shuttle bus from outside of the terminal at entry/exit E14 serving gates E2 to E18 or E35 serving gates E20 to E38. If youâre connecting airside from terminal E, the Skyline train stations are located between gates E8 and E11 or between gates E31 and E32 .
Hot Tip: If youâre flying American Eagle from the satellite terminal, allow an additional 10 minutes to reach your gate.Â
Although the Skylink train is usually the quickest way to get between terminals at DFW, in some situations it may be quicker to walk. For example, if your flight arrives at the higher-numbered gates of Terminal A and your connection is at a lower-numbered gate of Terminal B, then these gates are easily accessible via a walkway.
Thereâs no hard and fast rule for this as it depends entirely on the location of your arrival and departures gates and whether these are close to a Skylink station, so itâs worth checking the map.
The estimated walking times below are based on the closest points of each terminal so you will need to factor in a little extra time to reach your gate:
- From Terminal A to Terminal B; moving walkways available
- From Terminal A to Terminal C; moving walkways available
- From Terminal B to Terminal D; moving walkways unavailable
- From Terminal C to Terminal D; moving walkways available
- From Terminal A to Terminal D; moving walkways available
- From Terminal B to Terminal C; moving walkways available
As with all U.S. airports, if you are arriving on an international flight, then you will need to clear customs and immigration upon arrival; that means picking up your bag from baggage claim. If you booked a combined ticket, or your bags are checked to an onward destination, then you will be able to drop them off at the flight connections bag drop area.
If you have booked separate tickets, then you will need to re-check your bag at the applicable airlineâs check-in desk. In any case, you will have to re-clear security to enter the other terminals, and once you do, you can make use of the Skylink train to reach your connecting terminal.
If youâre connecting from a domestic flight, then you wonât need to clear customs and immigration , and you can remain airside to connect to your next terminal, unless youâre flying from Terminal E where no airside connections are available.
DFW terminals are accessible to passengers with disabilities, mobility concerns, and wheelchair users. The Skylink is fully accessible at each station by elevator, with dedicated seating areas onboard each train for passengers with mobility impairments.
Terminal link shuttle buses and shuttles to/from the rental car center or parking lots are wheelchair accessible, and for use in the terminal, wheelchairs can be requested through the individual airlines.
DFW is a busy airport for flight connections due to its central position and 4-hour flight time to most continental U.S. cities.
Every terminal at DFW, other than Terminal E, is connected to another with airside walkways and connector bridges, so itâs possible to walk between flight connections if you have time or are looking to stretch your legs between flights.
Passengers looking for the fastest and most convenient way to get between terminals can ride the Skylink train, operating every 2 minutes from each terminal with a train running clockwise and another running counter-clockwise to ensure youâre going in the right direction.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground
Jun 06 2018.
Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.
Subterranean commuting might not be anyoneâs idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscowâs finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.
The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the cityâs psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. Itâs also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules â official and not â hereâs what you need to know to get started.
A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour
A Brief Introduction
Moscowâs Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the cityâs beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalinâs secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscowâs layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.
The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a stationâs aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.
The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan âBuilding a Palace for the Peopleâ. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Unionâs past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.
It may be a museum, but itâs no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)
In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, itâs also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But thereâs a price to modernity: itâs phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly womenââ escalator grandmas â in news accountsâwho have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.
For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscowâs above-ground growth, as Russiaâs capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the worldâs worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations â a 40 percent increase â the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metroâs history.
Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55â˝ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide
Buying Tickets
- Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
- You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
- There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
- Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218â˝/ US$4), three days (415â˝/US$7) or seven days (830â˝/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
- If youâre going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, itâs worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36â˝, not 55â˝. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and theyâre valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
- You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
- You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
Rules, spoken and unspoken
No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.
Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)
Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.
Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).
An Easy Tour
This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). Itâs an easy tour, taking in mostâthough not allâof the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.
Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Â Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.
1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York Worldâs Fair in 1939. Itâs all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.
Take the 3/Green line one station to:
2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.
Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:
3. Novoslobodskaya. Â This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldnât find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Rigaâs Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.
Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:
4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russiaâs illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. Â The stationâs eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.
One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:
5. Baumanskaya.  Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.
Stay on that train direction one more east to:
6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metroâs tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Unionâs war-time struggles at home. The ceilingâs recurring rows of circular lamps give the stationâs main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.
Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:
7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchevâ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraineâs contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.
Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.
8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the worldâs longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russiaâs great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the â Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generalsâ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely thereâs some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.
Keep going one more stop west to:
9. Slavyansky Bulvar. Â One of the Metroâs youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stationsâwhich tend to have covered central tunnels on the platformsâit has an âopen-airâ feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). Itâs an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M ĂŠ tro, and thatâs precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M ĂŠ tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimardâs Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.
Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:
10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesnât have a war theme. It may also be one of the systemâs most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.
Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:
11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statuesâ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscowâs commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldierâs gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a babyâs foot, and a womanâs knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )
Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow | How does it work?
- August 15, 2023
Moscow transport: how does it work? Here we summarized all you need to know about Moscow city public transport (bus, metro, card Troika), but also taxi in Moscow.
Distances in Moscow: walking in Moscow
Walking. The geolocation of your accommodation in Moscow is important, because the distances are great. Youâre definitely not going to be able to do it all on foot. Moscow is the largest city in Europe with more than 12 million intramural inhabitants. Besides, Moscow is made for giants, because everything is big: the avenues, the buildings, the metro stations! So, the place of your accommodation is very important. You can check our blog post: Where to stay in Moscow?
Good to know! We have written 2 other blog posts that could be helpful: Maps of Moscow and Moscow Airport Transfer.
Public transport in Moscow: prices and how does it work?
Even if you are going to be able to visit many interesting places around Red Square (see the article: Moscow Red Square ), you will certainly take the metro to get around, but also to see the most beautiful stations . Furthermore, among public transport the metro remains the fastest solution in Moscow.
Good to know! Public transport is free for children under the age of 7. More specifically, 1 adult may not purchase a ticket for 1 child under the age of 7. If you are 2 adults, it is therefore for 2 children that the trips will be free.
Tips for Moscow city transport
Here are my tips to make travel more pleasant and optimized:
- Avoid to take Moscow City transport during rush hours. Especially for ground transportation (lots of traffic jams). You will lose a lot of time, especially for city center trips by land transport. Peak hours correspond to office hours: the standard working day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
- Use a mobile application to estimate your journey time as accurately as possible. In Europe, as in Russia, we use CityMapper . It is a free application that allows you to calculate your trips and see all the possibilities to get from one place to another. For the application to work, you must have an Internet connection: either through your French package which can prove to be expensive; either by wifi, in your hotel, in a cafe (very common in Moscow) or by using the free Wi-Fi of the city of Moscow! To download CityMapper on your mobile, just type its name in AppStore or GooglePlay . Then choose the city where you want to use it.
- Buy a transportation card. If you plan to take public transport several times a day or if you come to Moscow for a university or work exchange, it is more economical to take a transport card. I talk about it later in the article.
- Further info about airport transfer here: How to get from airport to Moscow?
Moscow metro: the fastest way to get around Moscow
Beautiful! The Moscow Metro is considered the most beautiful in the world! You can find out which stations are worth a visit in my article: The most beautiful stations in Moscow .
Metro timetables. Times vary by station, but approximately the Moscow Metro is open from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Below you can find a map of the Moscow metro, with an example of a metro station. You can find other Moscow maps here .
Metro prices in Moscow
- A single trip = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
- Price for transporting a suitcase in the metro = 60 rubles
- With a transport card , the price of the journey decreases. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about troika card below.
- You can also pay with ApplePay or GooglePay.
Where to buy metro tickets?
- At the cash desks , where you can buy everything: transport card or one-way tickets. Small flat: most of the time, the employees of the metro do not speak English very well. But they are used to it, you will be able to understand each other.
- At the English terminals , where you can also buy everything. See below for more details on terminal purchases.
Bus, trolleybus, tram in Moscow
Avoid at peak hours. The city center can be literally blocked! Mobile applications are very useful to estimate travel times.
Tram. Trams are very nice to do. Itâs a bit special. Tram stops are hard on the road. The cars then stop and let the pedestrians get on or off the tram.
Price of a bus, trolleybus or tram ticket
- One way = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
- With a transport card , the price drops. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about transport cards below.
Where to buy bus, trolleybus or tram tickets?
To drivers. There are no controllers on each bus, as in St. Petersburg.
By purchasing a transport card in advance at a metro station. There are few terminals installed near bus, tram or trolley stations.
Good to know! It is possible to pay on the metro, but also on buses with your smartphone or a contactless card (Apple Pay or Google Pay)! The price is 44 rubles per way. Beware, however, of bank charges, as for other ruble payments in Russia. See article: How to pay in Russia?
Transport cards in Moscow
Two most interesting solutions for taking Moscow City transport:
Troika card prices
- 1 metro, bus, trolley bus or tram journey: 40 rubles (instead of 57)
- 90 minutes in public transport (regardless of the number of changes): 62 rubles
How to buy a Troika card?
- Cost of purchase : 50 rubles. You can get it at all metro stations.
- Refill . Once the card is purchased, you must reload it. You can choose the amount freely.
- Where? It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card.
The Troika card is interesting if you:
- want to take advantage of lower transportation rates.
- stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, VIE, university exchange), but do not go for frequent daily trips.
- don’t stay long, but you know roughly how many trips you’re going to make or you don’t mind reloading the card often. Why? It is possible, but long and complicated to recover the initial amount of 50 rubles, as well as the rest on the card.
How much does the unlimited Yediny card (central Moscow area) cost?
- 1 day = 24 hours = 230 rubles
- 3 days = 438 rubles
- 30 days = 2170 rubles
- There are no unlimited cards for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days.
More details: Moscow transport website
How to buy a Yediny card?
It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card. The card is activated (the countdown starts) at the time of validation and not at the time of purchase. The card must be activated within 10 days of purchase (day of purchase included).
Here are the pictures of the automatic terminal (in English), when buying a YĂŠdiny card.
The Yediny card is interesting if you:
- stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, university exchange), but make frequent daily trips.
- do not stay in Moscow for a long time, but do not want to estimate your trips in advance (Troika card) while enjoying the unlimited.
Our experience with transport cards in Moscow
When I was working in Moscow, I used the Troika card. It was the most economical solution for me. We also used it later when we both went there. On the other hand, the last time we were there, we took the Yediny card and finally we found it more practical, even if it turned out to be less economical in the end.
Our verdict (compared to our travel habits): budget side, the Troika card is better. But for less headache (how much to put on the card? How much is left?âŚ), The unlimited Yediny card is more practical.
Boat trips in Moscow
There are several boat trips on the Moskva River. In addition, it is even possible to buy an unlimited day ticket. For more information, you can then consult the article: Take a boat trip on the Moskva River.
Getting around in Moscow by taxi
There are several types of taxis in Moscow:
- First, official taxis (sign on the roof);
- Then individuals who do this out of the blue;
- And finally Moscow taxis via mobile applications (private drivers or taxi agencies).
Good to know. The cost of a taxi ride to the city center in Moscow is around 500 rubles. If you want to avoid negotiations, use the taxi apps in Moscow.
Uber Moscow: NO.
It works before, but not anymore, because Uber does not use the classic app in Russia (they have created a special app for Russia, only this app works now). So, you have to download the special Uber Russia app… but this application is only available on the Russian AppStore, so it cannot be downloaded for us. Uber’s competitors in Russia such as YandexTaxi or Gett can be used.
Use the YandexTaxi app to take a taxi in Moscow
The Yandex company is the Russian Google. Initially a search engine, it also offers several services. YandexTaxi is then the taxi service in Moscow, it works everywhere in Russia. You can download the app from the AppStore or GooglePlay . Thanks to this application, it is possible to pay the taxi in cash (by default) or by bank card directly (to be specified in the application). If you are thinking of paying in cash, then have rather small denominations so that the driver can give you change. The application is now in French.
How does YandexTaxi work?
- First, it detects your geolocation.
- Then you indicate your arrival position using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
- It then offers you the estimated prices for each range (thrifty, business, etc.).
- You choose, confirm and wait for the driver to arrive.
- You identify the driver with the indicated license plate, then at the end YandexTaxi collects the race via your bank card (do not forget to put your card info before using the app, otherwise pay in cash).
Other solution. You can also book a taxi in advance on KiwiTaxi website . It’s easy!
Public transport and taxi in Moscow: summary
Getting around Moscow is quite simple, as Moscow City transport is well developed. However, because of traffic jams, the metro is the quickest solution. It isn’t an issue, because the Moscow metro is very clean and beautiful. Taxis are rather cheap and easy to find thanks to mobile applications like, for example, YandexTaxi.
