Northern Lights Wilderness Tour with Professional Camera

After being picked up from your accommodation and properly dressed with professional winter overalls and boots (temperature can drop to -30°C!), your Northern Lights guide will drive you far away from Rovaniemi, straight out to the wilderness to start hunting for the Northern Lights. Show more

During the day, we always check the weather forecasts and the solar activity reports. This way, we can adapt the start of the tour to give you the best chance to enjoy the clearer sky and observe the Northern Lights. Based on the analysis of the meteorological situation and our experience, we will drive to locations that will hopefully offer a better chance to see this natural phenomenon. For example, if the forecasts and Northern Lights predictions are not promising around the Rovaniemi area, your guide can take you further afield to get a better sky.

The weather conditions are checked during the tour, and we may decide together to jump back in the minivan and get to another location if we wish. As this excursion is a 4-hour Northern Lights hunt, you will get the chance to visit up to 3 different locations and increase your chance to observe the Northern Lights.

This excursion will also offer you the unique opportunity to drive long distances through the Lappish wilderness, explore the Arctic nature and take on different routes that will lead you to fantastic scenery; snowy forests, powerful rapids, quaint frozen beaches and vast ice covered lakes. Hopefully, with the Northern Lights dancing over your heads!

Refreshments and a typical Finnish campfire snack will be provided halfway, as your guide lights a fire to keep you warm. This is a great opportunity for your guide to show you how to build a fire using traditional methods. No need for matches or a lighter, your guide will use flint & steel and natural materials you can find in the nature that surrounds you (this can be done in conditions as cold as -30°C!). Once the fire is burning and the kettle is boiling, your guide will keep an eye on the moving sky. This break around the campfire will be also the perfect moment for your guide to answer all your questions about Lapland, life in the Arctic and the Northern Lights. Hot drinks are served, sausages are grilled over the campfire and bread toasted for you.

We invite you to take your camera with you (you can rent or buy a tripod from us if you wish) to capture the Northern Lights. In all cases, your guide will be equipped with a professional camera and will take many pictures for you, of you and the Northern Lights. A link to download all the pictures will be sent to you the next day.

On all our excursions, our groups are limited to 8 people maximum. This tour is for children aged 5 years old and upwards. It is very important for us to provide you with the best experience possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. Furthermore, when it comes to the Northern Lights, chances to observe them properly are increased when groups (and light pollution emitted by torches, phones, cameras, etc.) are reduced. As we usually say – the smaller the group, the bigger the experience!

Epic northern lights wilderness tour [wild about lapland honest review].

Bradley Williams

As a part of our epic 3 month journey around Scandinavia, one of our biggest goals was to see the breathtaking Northern Lights.

In fact, I’d say that almost everyone who visits Lapland is hoping to see the breathtaking phenomenon as well!

Wouldn't you agree?

Of course you do!

Well, one of the best ways to see the Northern Lights when in Finland is to go on a late night wilderness tour.

That’s why we were so excited to work in collaboration with Wild About Lapland , to see if we could spot the lights as well, and learn more about them from an expert guide.

Well, here’s a look at how we got on with their Northern Lights Wilderness Tour and a cheeky discount at the end!

But first ...

Travellerspoint

Who are Wild About Lapland?

Wild About Lapland are a small, independent tour operator based in Rovaniemi.

This city is easily one of Lapland’s most popular places to visit, as it serves as a great base to go on all kinds of tours and adventures into the nearby nature.

Wild About Lapland offer a variety of daily tours, each one tailored to the time of year you expect to visit.

It was founded just a few short years ago by Theo Turner, an ex British Royal Marine Commando; so you know he has plenty of experience surviving in rugged conditions!

Offering tours with a maximum of 8 people, his goal is to create a more intimate and worthwhile experience on each of his tours, giving everyone the chance to learn more and truly experience the beauty of their surroundings.

If you're keen to find out more about the tours they offer, you can view them here .

But for now, let’s take a look at what you came here for …

Our experience of the Northern Lights Wilderness Tour

The Northern Lights Wilderness Tour lasts for 4 hours and takes you well outside of Rovaniemi, giving you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Hunting for the Northern Lights

To see the Northern Lights in all their beauty, it’s essential that you get away from any light pollution and find places located with near complete darkness.

These locations are, as you'd imagine, best found well outside of Rovaniemi, so our first stop was a lakeside resting spot about 20 km northwest of the city.

This gorgeous spot is popular year round with Finnish locals, be it for ice fishing in the winter or lake swimming in the summer months.

When the sun goes in at night, it served as a peaceful spot to try and hunt for the nights.

However, due to the cloud cover, Theo loaded us back in the van and took us further outside to an even more remote spot, by yet another incredible lake.

Here the cloud cover was much less and, when our eyes adjusted, we were able to see many of the bright stars in the sky.

Just being by the lake, staring out was very peaceful and tranquil.

As a part of our 4 hour tour, we went to a few other remote spots, but unfortunately were not able to see the lights that night.

The thing about the Northern Lights is there is no way to know for sure when they will come out.

Some weeks they will be out in full force every day of the week and other weeks they may be visible just one or two days.

Typically, October is a very good month and they had great success other nights that week, but unfortunately for us, this wasn’t to be our night.

That being said, there was much more to enjoy as a part of our tour ...

winter gearr

Fireside snacks

This is a key part of every Wilderness Tour, where Theo (or your guide that night) goes ahead and makes a cosy fire, using traditional methods.

Theo taught us how to make a fire without matches, using just a magnesium fire starter and the bark of Silver Birch.

Afterwards, we got to enjoy freshly grilled sausages with sinappi (local Finnish mustard) which tastes amazing!

It was very cosy by the fire, which more than kept away the cold and made for a great spot to relax, talk and keep an eye on the night’s sky.

cooking sasags

Learning more about native Finland

All throughout the tour, Theo put a lot of focus on the history of the local area and how Finnish locals would have survived for hundreds of years using just simple tools and what nature provides.

He’s very knowledgeable of the history of Lapland and it was a great way to learn more about our surroundings.

Also, if our van ever lets us down and we’re stuck in the woods one night, I guess we now know the basics of how to survive!

So long as a bear doesn’t find us ...

making fire

Small group atmosphere

After visiting more than 60 countries around the world, you can imagine that we have been on a LOT of tours!

Well, I certainly can agree with the team at Wild About Lapland that keeping tours to a maximum of just 8 people is a great way to do it.

It gives you the chance to meet everyone there much more closely and gives you more one-on-one time with your guide to ask questions.

It also means you can get to and from sites much quicker, which is a big bonus.

Overall verdict

Despite not being able to see the Northern Lights, I can say that the tour was a massive success!

The night was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend the tour as being excellent value for money.

It set us up with the knowledge and know-how to spot them on our own on future nights.

Writing this a week after our experience, I can report that we have seen the lights, and the knowledge imparted by Theo was crucial in us achieving this!

He also allowed us to capture their beauty, by showing us the best settings on our camera for Northern Lights photography.

Some epic shots of the Northern Lights

Don't worry, I’m not going to let you leave this post without seeing some awesome shots of the Northern Lights.

As a part of your tour with Wild About Lapland, your guide will use advanced photography equipment to take stunning shots of the lights seen that night.

Sometimes, the camera is able to pick up shots that you can’t even see with your own eyes; so there’s even more chance of you walking away having seen them.

The guys at Wild About Lapland were kind enough to see across the following shots they had recently taken, as an example of what you can hope to see on your own tour with them …

Who is their Northern Lights Wilderness Tour best suited to?

Overall, there is nothing too strenuous about this tour.

Your guide will do all of the driving to necessary spots, and there is only minimal walking involved.

Also, much of your time can be spent sat by the fireplace or snuggled up in big winter coats they provide you with.

As such, you don’t need to worry about getting cold or tired, making this a great tour for almost anyone.

However, those that get the most from it are those that are curious to learn more about 2 things:

  • The Northern Lights
  • The great Finnish outdoors

A key part of this tour is engaging with your guide and gaining a deeper understanding of why the Northern Lights exist, how best to find them and how to photograph them.

As well as learning more about the history of native Finns who used to survive in the wilderness.

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  LENGTH:  4-5 hours | ✅  Book it!

Discover authentic Lappish traditions hidden away from the usual tourist trails, right on the outskirts of Rovaniemi. Enjoy a slice of Finnish culture with a rejuvenating sauna experience, a refreshing dip in an Arctic lake and a delightful dinner by a crackling open fire in a charming cottage.

Throughout your adventure, your knowledgeable tour guide will reveal the rich cultural significance behind each activity. This small group expedition, limited to just eight participants, offers the perfect blend of adventure and cultural insight.

Alice says “If you’re looking for an authentic Lappish experience, this is it. We loved every second of it. Our group of four – two adults and two children (11 and 8) joined another couple in a group of six. We were taken by Pedro in his van from Santa Claus out to the cabin. It had no running water, which was an experience in itself, and we were given a welcome and introduction to the sauna, main house and the lake. We spent two hours between sauna and lake, which was truly invigorating. The kids did it as well and loved it – they even did snow angels in their swimsuits. We then enjoyed an incredible lunch and a really interesting chat with Pedro about the Finnish sauna lifestyle. Highly recommend.”

Why I booked a Northern Lights Wilderness Tour with a Camera from Rovaniemi

I love taking northern lights tours . While I am happy enough to go hunting on my own, there is something fun about going with a group of people and seeing the joy of people seeing the aurora borealis for the first time.

Every tour provider offers something slightly different, with their own little northern lights viewing points dotted around Rovaniemi.

I decided to book my Rovaniemi northern lights tour with Wild About Lapland, as I love their ethos around sustainable small group tours . I had also heard that their northern lights tour is one of the best around Rovaniemi. Spoiler alert… it is.

How to Book the Rovaniemi Northern Lights Wilderness Tour

I booked my tour through Get Your Guide , one of the best tour booking platforms out there. They offer an incredible range of tours from Rovaniemi including the northern lights tour with a camera !

Booking a Rovaniemi northern lights tour via Get Your Guide couldn’t be easier. Simply select the date required and the number of participants you wish to join the tour.

Occasionally if there have not been enough bookings for your preferred date, you will be unable to book the tour for one person as a minimum of two participants are required to run the tour.

The tour runs between September and early April.

Once you have selected the date and number of people, you will need to add the tour to your cart. At this point, you can add additional tours you wish to book.

Once you proceed to check out, you will need to add your details and a pick-up location if staying outside of central Rovaniemi. If your hotel is not listed, select a place close to your accommodation and contact Wild About Lapland with your actual address. They will confirm if they can pick you up from there.

If your pick-up location is outside of Rovaniemi, like Apukka Resort , for example, there may be an additional charge. After completing your details, you will need to go to the payment section.

Payment can be done with all major credit and debit cards, along with online payment platforms like PayPal. During the payment process, you can also reserve your tour and pay at a later date.

This is a great option for those who are looking to space out the payments for their trip. After you have completed the booking process, you will receive a confirmation email confirming pick-up details and time.

Where to meet on the night of the northern lights wilderness tour

If you have selected a hotel pick-up, Wild About Lapland will provide you with a pick-up time. You should make sure you are waiting at the entrance of your accommodation on time to not delay the tour.

Once you have been picked up, you will be taken to the office, where you will be decked out with snow gear.

If you are staying in the city center, you will need to make your way to the Wild About Lapland office on your own. The office can be found at Rovakatu 24, which is conveniently located in the city center.

At the office, you will meet the rest of your tour participants and get dressed in winter attire if required. Once everyone has convened at the office and is dressed for the weather, you will head out with your guide for the tour.

My experience and highlights from the Rovaniemi Northern Lights Tour

Your Rovaniemi northern lights tour will visit two to three locations, normally within a 50km radius around Rovaniemi. However, if there are clear skies outside of their normal operation zone, they will head there to give you the best chance of seeing the aurora.

For this reason, I would not cancel the tour, even if it is cloudy above Rovaniemi. Every tour is different, and even on the night of the tour, different groups will go to different locations so that areas do not become too crowded.

I took my tour in late March when the snow was still thick on the ground and the lakes were still frozen.

The night I took the tour, the skies were very clear, but the aurora forecast was not predicting strong northern lights. This meant we were going to need a very clear view of the north as the aurora would likely sit on the horizon.

This isn’t always predictable, but the underlying data aurora guides read helps them to predict if the northern lights will be active. However, there is always a chance that the aurora will explode into action and appear stronger and further south than predicted.

Our first stop was a frozen lake. It involved a little bit of walking on a slippery road, but it was easy to get down to the lake. From there we had great views of the north, but in the west, there was still a faint glow of the sun setting in the distance.

It is quite surprising how late the sunset is in the Arctic in March. Thankfully, shortly after we arrived, the aurora came out to play. Our guide, Tyler, quickly gathered everyone together to take photos of the group and individually.

The aurora started to fade and the lake became busier, so we headed to our second and final location. This time, we went to another lake where Wild About Lapland had built their own lavvu on the lake’s edge.

To reach this spot, you need to walk through a birch forest and then down onto the lake. This is the same lake where you can do the Rovaniemi ice fishing tour with Wild About Lapland.

You will need to watch where you are walking as moving off the path will plunge you into deep snow. As soon as we arrived the northern lights burst into action and put on another vibrant show for everyone.

While everyone was taking pictures on their own devices, the guide set up a fire in the lavvu. Eventually, we all went to the lavvu to warm up and eat some sausages (vegetarian sausages available on request) and have a hot drink.

In the lavvu, you get the opportunity to talk with your group and share travel stories and tips for Rovaniemi and Lapland.

After the lavvu, my tour ended and we headed back to Rovaniemi, dropping some people off along the way. The best thing about this tour is even if you are unfortunate enough not to see the northern lights, you will have a great time.

This is largely in part due to the incredible guides that Wild About Lapland employs. Every tour guide I have met has always been knowledgeable and a joy to be around.

It is important to remember seeing the northern lights is not guaranteed as you will need several things to go right on the night. The tour provider will do everything they can, but ultimately it is out of their control.

I recommend booking closer to the time of arrival as you will be able to see when there are predicted to be clear skies somewhere around Rovaniemi.

Who can’t take this northern lights from Rovaniemi tour

This tour is not suitable for people with severe mobility issues, as you will need to be able to get in and out of the minibus and complete short walks. I would not take this tour with younger children, as it involves standing around for long times outside in the cold.

Otherwise, this is a very easy tour that is accessible to pretty much everyone!

What to bring on your tour

Firstly, you will want to wear the right clothing, depending on the time of year you take the tour. If you go in September and October, the temperatures are not too extreme.

You will be spending a lot of time standing around outside, so you will want to be as warm as possible. A good pair of gloves is a must, especially a pair that allows you to operate a camera effectively if you are going to be taking photographs.

Pocket warmers are great during the winter, and if you are wearing mittens, they slot perfectly in the main section. I own a rechargeable pocket warmer that works perfectly and has three heat settings.

The tour provides hot drinks and food, so I don’t see the need to bring food with you. However, I would eat a hearty meal before heading out on the tour.

Camera equipment for a Rovaniemi northern lights tour

  • Camera – You will want a camera that allows you to set the settings manually and run long exposures. I use a Sony Alpha 7 iii. This is a higher-end camera, but it takes incredibly stunning photographs. I have also taken photographs of the northern lights successfully on an entry-level Canon DSLR. Thankfully, nearly all modern smartphones have a night mode that takes fairly awesome pictures of the aurora. Just make sure your flash is turned off!
  • Lens – You will want a lens on your camera to have a low f-stop. I use a 20mm prime lens for my Sony, and for the Canon DSLR, I use a wide-angle lens. You will also need to switch the lens to manual focus.
  • Tripod – A tripod is incredibly important as with long exposures on cameras and phones, you will need to keep the camera steady. A durable tripod will do the job, and you can get attachments that will allow you to attach your phone to it.
  • A Remote – Avoiding any possible camera shake is vital. Therefore I recommend purchasing a remote to avoid touching the camera. Alternatively, you can set a timer, but I personally have always found a remote better.

This tour is definitely one of my favorite activities when visiting Rovaniemi in winter . Do you have any questions before booking a Rovaniemi northern lights tour?

Aurora dome

Spend the evening with us in our exclusive Aurora Dome far away from any light pollution and discover the magic of the Northern Lights!  We will walk with you through the evening forest for around ten minutes, to the Dome. When we arrive at the Aurora dome we will serve you hot soup and bread as well as coffee/tea and tell you about the Northern Lights while waiting for them.

We will go outside if the Aurora Borealis appear to enjoy their show and take pictures of that unforgettable moment.

Why The Aurora Dome?

The biggest advantage of the Aurora Dome compared to waiting outside without a shelter or inside in a regular cabin is that you have tempered environment and can sit down on a bench while enjoying a bowl of hot soup, but it is not so warm that you have to take your winter gear off. We do have a nice log fire which will keep you considerably warmer than outside, but keep your hat on! The Aurora Dome allows you to just walk outside with your camera if you see the Northern Lights through the Dome wall and take pictures when they come to dance. The Aurora Dome is located in a forest where you have no other source of light other than the lights of the stars and the small light from the candles & fire inside the Dome.

Denali Aurora Quest

northern lights wilderness tour

Description

Search the skies for the Northern Lights on a guided 3-hour tour in the Denali area. The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomenons, and Alaska is one of the best places in the world for viewing.

Why take this tour?

Leave your Healy area accommodations via a climate-controlled van, and journey away from the lights of town to search for the Northern Lights. The area around Denali makes an ideal spot for stargazing and catching the sometimes elusive Aurora Borealis. Your Alaskan guide will provide commentary and conversation on the area’s unique history, formidable climate, dynamic geography, and separate scientific facts from fictional myths. Learn all about Mother Nature’s fireworks display from a local guide, sip a warm drink, and learn how the Lights are the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere. This bucket list experience lets you hop out at select locations with your camera in hand with pointers from your guide. The Northern Lights are visible only during the winter months (August to April) and sightings are not guaranteed.

Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Home / Russia Travel Tips & Essential Advice / Russia’s Best Locations for the Northern Lights

Only eight countries reach north above the Arctic Circle, but without a doubt, Russia reigns supreme. While this means freezing winters with uninterrupted nights that linger for weeks, it’s also the setting for one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring spectacles – the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights.

Here are 6 of the top unique destinations to view the northern lights in Russia: View map

Table of Contents

1. Murmansk, Kola Peninsula

Murmansk , in the extreme north-west near Finland, enjoys over 40 days of uninterrupted night, making it one of the world’s premier destinations for the Aurora Borealis, and with over 300,000 residents you can enjoy all the cosmopolitan comforts of civilisation amidst the serenity of the Arctic.

Northern Lights Murmansk tour Russia Kola Peninsula icebreaker Lenin

You can get to Murmansk by train (30h) or flight (2h) from Moscow or St Petersburg, what makes this region is easiest to get in order to experience the Northern Lights from late August to May, with the condition that the night temperature is below -10 ° C, so plan your trip for mid-September to mid-April.

The Northern Lights is a poorly predicted phenomenon and depends on the magnetic activity of the Sun. In other words, you have to wait and literally “hunt” it, which means it’s worth a week or more to go. You can diversify your vacation in the Kola Peninsula by skiing in the Khibiny Mountains or dog sledding in Kirovsk.

Check out this snippet of what to see on a tour in Murmansk, hunting the northern lights:

2. Arkhangelsk

There is a general rule for observing the Northern Lights in Arkhangelsk region – the heart of Russian North – the further from the large populated areas, the brighter the “dance of the sky” is. Severodvinsk city is where you’d like to go for the Aurora Borealis hunting from mid-September to mid-April. The radiance of the lights here is distinguished by a green shade and specific flicker. Aurora borealis lasts here from 10 minutes to several days. Well, while waiting for the sky to blossom, you may visit the open-air museum of wooden architecture “Malye Korely”.

The flight from Moscow to Arkhangelsk will take two hours, a journey by train – about 22 h.

3. Naryan-Mar

This forgotten northern outpost lost prominence when easier routes across Siberia opened through the Ural mountains, leaving it a preserved vestige of Nenets culture . Enjoy learning myths, legends, and indigenous lore (like not whistling during the northern lights) in a truly unique journey through Russia’s heartland.

Northern lights green Russia

The Aurora Borealis in the polar Naryan-Mar is very beautiful, it consists of several colours and is accompanied by a flicker, that turns the night sky into a fairy tale. The best time for observation is the season from November to March. This natural phenomenon is observed usually with a sharp change of weather. The flight to Naryan-Mar from Moscow takes slightly less than three hours.

4. Novaya Zemlya

Only reachable by special permit, this northern archipelago is one of the most extreme locations to view the northern lights. Watch the glow of lights bathe herds of reindeer in subtle greens as they stroll on islands stranded in a frozen sea during the polar night. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

5. Taimyr Peninsula

Taimyr is called “the edge of the cold”, because the duration of winter here is from 235 days in the south, up to 285 days in the north of the peninsula. The climate is extremely stiff: in winter it’s from -40 ° C and to -60 ° C. Taimyr is also known as the land of rare amazing northern lights.

Taimyr northern lights

You can get to the peninsula by plane from Moscow to Norilsk (4h), and then to Dixon, Igarka or Khatanga villages by car. These villages are actually renowned for its bright white light show seen only during summer. But don’t get too excited – the year-round high never gets above +5C (43 F), so don’t forget to pack your coat.

The only “city” in the world located north of Arctic Circle, Salekhard in Yamal region thrives on the northern lights. Known for a specific tint of green local Nenets people call “Nger Harp – the light of the dead,” Salekhard is a city with its own unique connection to the winter light show.   The Nenets are the native people of the Yamal , and one of the largest native communities in Russia also called ‘Samoyeds’ – a nomadic people who used to live by herding reindeer and are close to the Scandinavia’s Sami (or ‘Lapps’).

Yamal Nenets reindeer migration Siberia

If you spend a week out in the tundra or taiga at a nomad camp of Nenets, then you are likely to see the Northern Lights. In general, they can be viewed from August until April, but are most common from November to March and best of all in January and February, when nights are long and dark and colder temperatures bring about multi-coloured Northern Lights, rather than the green ones that appear when it’s “warmer”. To get to Salekhard you can by train from Moscow (45h) or by direct flight (2h).

In Russia, the Northern Lights can be seen even in the more southern areas – in, for example, Karelia, Valdai, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

Top places to watch the Northern Lights in Russia

  • #Petrozavodsk
  • #Special Interest

Did you know that Russia is one of the eight countries in the world, where you can view the northern lights? If you have always dreamt of admiring this mesmerizing spectacle, here are the top 5 destinations in Russia to do this. A trip to Russia in winter is a challenging but unforgettable experience which will bring lots of insights into the local lifestyle and will allow seeing Russia from a different perspective.

01 Murmansk

northern lights wilderness tour

The region of Murmansk on the Kola Peninsula is located in the far north-west of Russia, near Finland. With a population of 300,000, this is the world’s biggest city beyond the Arctic Circle, which makes it an outstanding location, where you can enjoy nature, yet have all the city amenities near you.

Although it is possible to see the Northern Lights from Murmansk, for better chances, you may consider a small village called Teriberka Just 120 kilometres away from the city. A conspicuous fact about winter in Murmansk is that it is mild, while the average temperature goes 10-15 Celsius below zero.

The Aurora show, however, is not only limited to the winter period, meaning you can plan your trip for mid-September to mid-April.

Since the Northern Lights is unlikely to be predicted, as it depends on the magnetic activity of the Sun, make sure to have enough time to try your luck and stay in the area for several days. While waiting for Aurora, you can experience other entertainment activities, such as skiing or dog sledging in the Murmansk area.

02 Arkhangelsk region

northern lights wilderness tour

Arkhangelsk is another large city in the Arctic Circle. It is nowadays a modern city with an important historical centre and unique wooden architecture. The flight from Moscow to Arkhangelsk takes about two hours, a journey by train – about 22 hours, with an outstanding view on Russian winter.

When looking for the brighter sky, it is worth going further from the populated area, for example, consider Severodvinsk. The lights there differ by special green shade and flicker. The Aurora Borealis can last as short as 10 minutes or can go on for several days, there is no way of predicting its duration in advance.

While waiting for the sky to start the spectacle, you can visit the open-air museum of wooden architecture “Malye Korely”.

northern lights wilderness tour

Kirovsk is located near the Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula, where many tourists go for a skiing trip. The recommended resorts to check out are Kukisvumchorr, Bolshoi Vudyavr and Kolasportland.

Beware that the climate there is more severe. The higher you go, however, the clearer and brighter the sky becomes, leaving you with more chances to see the Aurora. Your hike up will be rewarded with thousands of seemingly dancing lights in the sky.

04 Naryan-Mar

northern lights wilderness tour

Another outstanding location for a great Aurora experience is the polar Naryan-Mar. It is the capital of the Nenets Autonomous District famous for reindeer farms, fishing and oil. While watching the Northern Lights there, one can immerse into local myths, legends, and indigenous lore, as well as experience a journey through Russia’s heartland.

The best period to observe the Lights is from November to March. The colours of the phenomena in this region are exceptional, and the flicker adds to the magic. The flight to Naryan-Mar from Moscow will take about three hours.

northern lights wilderness tour

This destination is recommended only to the most persistent and experienced travellers, as the region is famous for the coldest weather in the world. Temperatures there can drop down to minus 60 degrees Celsius!

It is quite probable to see the Northern Lights near the regional capital — the city of Yakutsk. The sky here looks like a lavender-green star-encrusted veil. The flights from Moscow to Yakutsk take 6.5 hours.

General tips to prepare for a Northern Lights trip:

  • Arrange a transport: If you want to go further from a city and see the Aurora from a local settlement, you will need to book a tour in advance to transport you into the wilder parts.
  • Get ready to take pictures: If you aspire to capture this natural magic, you will need a tripod and a camera with manual mode settings. For better results, make sure you learn about ISO and shutter speed.
  • Get Warm: The weather in winter in Russia corresponds to all the stereotypes, so once in the Arctic Circles you should prepare many layers of clothing. As hunting for northern lights takes some time, make sure you wear wool socks, gloves, scarf or even thermal clothing.

Best conditions: make sure to escape the city lights and look for dark skies. Before going on a hunt, check the weather forecast for a cloudless sky. Also check the information on the solar flares, as solar activity forecasts

7 best places to see the Northern Lights in Russia

Northern lights over the fishing boat Teriberka, Murmansk Region.

Northern lights over the fishing boat Teriberka, Murmansk Region.

The Northern Lights are something akin to a miracle because their appearance depends on many factors: weather, solar activity and geographic location. Also, the evening air should be frosty and the sky clear, without any clouds.  The Aurora season lasts from the end of September to the end of March, and it usually appears from 9 p.m. to midnight. Check the Aurora forecast before your trip.

In Russia, there are many places for observation. The Arctic Circle crosses a large part of the country, and the nighttime light show can be seen from Karelia to Chukotka. Sometimes, even St. Petersburg residents can see the magic Northern Lights. Here are the best places to enjoy them.

1. Murmansk

A cozy house on the coast of the Barents Sea and the aurora. Kola Peninsula, Murmansk region.

A cozy house on the coast of the Barents Sea and the aurora. Kola Peninsula, Murmansk region.

The Murmansk Region, which is located on the Kola Peninsula, is very popular among Russian tourists who go there to ski, snowboard and visit traditional Sami villages. With a population of 300,000, this is the world’s largest city beyond the Arctic Circle.

You can see the Aurora in Murmansk, but tourists are recommended to travel 120 kilometers to the small village of Teriberka, which was featured in the movie, Leviathan . The most convenient option is to order a tour, which costs about 9,000 rubles ($150) per person including transportation and hotel. In fact, there are many small towns near Murmansk from where one can see the Aurora, but most are closed to tourists. Good news: The winter in Murmansk is mild, with the average temperature in December and January about minus 10-15 Celsius.

Maria Stambler and her husband visited Teriberka just before New Year’s Eve 2016, a fairy tale time of year, and spent about four hours in the middle of the tundra during the night. Despite the cold, they said it was “an incredible experience.”

“Eventually, we stopped near a large field and everyone marched through the snow to the spot that would serve as the vantage and photo point. There were about 30 people that evening eager to see the Northern Lights. And see them we did!” she marveled.

How to get there: the trip to Murmansk from Moscow or St. Petersburg is rather cheap (return flight costs about 6,000 rubles - $100), and it takes only two hours to get there. You can reach Teriberka by bus ( schedule in Russian ), or by taxi (about 5,000 rubles - $85). The official tourism website of the Murmansk Region.

This small town is the nearest to the Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula and a popular place for skiing. There are several resorts here, including Kukisvumchorr , Bolshoi Vudyavr (only in Russian) and Kolasportland (only in Russian).

The Khibiny Mountains are located south of Murmansk, but the climate is more severe. From high up, the sky is clear and bright, and there are more chances to see the Northern Lights.

How to get there: The Khibiny airport near Kirovsk welcomes regular flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg, (roundtrip costs 11,000 rubles - $185). Visit Kirovsk’s official tourism website .

3. Arkhangelsk

This rather large northern city (population 350,000) is also a popular destination for winter tourism. Founded in the 16th century, Arkhangelsk lies in the Arctic Circle, at a point where the Northern Dvina River meets the White Sea. Today, this is a modern city with a major historical center and fine examples of wooden architecture. By the way, Arkhangelsk is depicted on the 500-ruble banknote.

The Aurora can be seen in the city, but it’s worth going to the northern part of the Arkhangelsk Region. The best time to observe the Aurora is the spring and autumn equinox, as well as in winter.

How to get there: Roundtrip flights from Moscow or St. Petersburg cost about 10,000 rubles ($170), and take only 2 hours. Visit the official tourism website of the Arkhangelsk Region.

4. Petrozavodsk

Aurora borealis (northern lights) over Lake Onega in Petrozavodsk.

Aurora borealis (northern lights) over Lake Onega in Petrozavodsk.

Sometimes the Northern Lights can be seen in Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. But for more atmospheric photos visit the small Karelian towns in the north:  Kem, Belomorsk, Nilmoguba or along the White Sea coast. You can also observe the Aurora on Solovki Island.

Petrozavodsk is a very interesting city, located 400 km north of St. Petersburg. Moreover, Karelia has a wide range of tourism infrastructure, from convenient transportation routes to English-speaking tour guides.

How to get there: Regular flights from Moscow cost only 7,000 rubles ($120), and there is also the Lastochka express train from St. Petersburg (twice a day). Here is Karelia’s official tourism website .

5. Naryan- Mar

Northern Lights with reflection in the lake, Naryan-Mar.

Northern Lights with reflection in the lake, Naryan-Mar.

The capital of the Nenets Autonomous District in the north of Russia is located beyond the Arctic Circle. Naryan-Mar is a city of reindeer farms, fishing and oil.

There is a monument to the first Russian city built in the Arctic – Pustozersk, founded in 1499. In the 16th century, Pustozersk became a major Russian outpost in the north and in Siberia, and it often served as a place of exile and imprisonment.

The Aurora here consists of numerous shadows and flickering that makes it really fantastic. The best time to visit the region in order to see the Northern Lights and to listen to the legends of the vanished city is in early fall.

How to get there: Roundtrip flights from Moscow to Naryan-Mar cost about 15,000 rubles ($250), and take 2.5 hours. Visit the website of the Center of Arctic Tourism (in Russian only).

The Northern Lights are not a rarity in the Komi Republic, and sometimes the Aurora is seen even in August in Syktyvkar (the capital of Komi), but you’ll have better chances if you go further north to the city of Vorkuta (population 60,000). The region’s northernmost city lies at the far end of a railway line that stretches 2,500 km from Moscow. In the 1930-50s, the region was home to the largest Gulag camp, with over 70,000 inmates. In modern Russia, the city is known for coal mining. The climate is severe, with average temperatures in winter hovering around minus 20 Celsius, and in summer frost is not uncommon.

Locals say the Aurora can be seen even in summer, but they usually see it in winter.  “At this time of year it’s always dark, and the Northern Lights can be seen in the morning, afternoon, and evening. It is emerald green, red and even white.”

How to get there: Flights from Moscow to Vorkuta are several times a month and cost about 30,000 rubles ($500). Travel time is three hours. Another way to reach Vorkuta is via Syktyvkar by train (return flight Moscow – Syktyvkar costs 12,000 rubles - $200; the train takes 21 hours). Visit the Komi Republic tourism website .

The Republic of Sakha-Yakutia is only for the most frost resistant people, and it boasts the coldest city in the world – Oymyakon, where winter temperatures can drop to minus 60 Celsius.

The Northern Lights can be seen near the regional capital of Yakutsk, as well as from other local settlements. Some of the northern towns are closed for individual tourists, but they can be visited with tour groups.

How to get there: Regular flights from Moscow to Yakutsk cost about 20,000 rubles ($330), and take 6.5 hours. Visit Yakutia’s tourism website .
