Incredible Crete! Tour

Incredible Crete!

The tour of Crete was indeed Incredible due to two great gentlemen! RG and Kostintinos displayed the utmost professionalism and class as they drove us all through the island of Crete. They were very genuine and thoughtful to Michele and I throughout the entire trip. They both knew that we were eager to experience and learn about Crete. Michele and I wanted to see Crete through the eyes of the locals that’s reside there and RG and Kostas delivered! We went off the grid and had experiences with Epos Tours that we never could have planned ourselves. Kostas is a wealth of information regarding the culture and history of Crete. From the minute you meet these two men you will bond and have the best travel experience ever! Miss you both and thanks again!

Thank you for the great hotels! The one in Paros was away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. The view from our room, first floor, was ideal. Spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean room with a large bathroom and a nice terrace. In Santorini we stayed in a hotel with a view of the caldera and within walking distance to the center of fira town. We highly recommend travel zone!!

Paradisial Peloponnese (All Inclusive & Guided In-Depth Tour)

We wanted a guided tour that focused on ancient archaeological sites and museums across the Peloponnese. George, your agent at Pictures, but together a package that suited our needs to a tee. He brought along Aristotle as our guide and he made the trip into something extraordinary. Aristotle is a Greek archaeologist with literally encyclopedic knowledge of the Greek sites and museums we visited. We was the best guide we've ever had anywhere in the world. George was along on the trip as well, taking care of the day-to-day operations: Hotels, meals, water, getting from A to B as well as the inevitable snags that develop (Each of us leaving our iPads behind in hotel rooms on two different occasions!). We emerged from the tour satisfied and pleased with the entire experience.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Greece

Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again
Mia our leader gets 10/10! We were lucky to have her as our guide. She made everything easy and we saw so much in a short time. This has been a memorable trip. It's my first Intrepid tour. I will definitely be doing more and will recommend them to my friends!! Thanks Intrepid
Excellent tour, great skipper, Marios and great group participation. Though travelling alone, I never felt left out. Our skipper / guide did everything to make the tour a joy !

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Explore this sun-kissed island on our  7 day Highlights of Crete tour.

10. Sail around Greece

You know those moments in life when you wonder, is this even real? On a sailing trip in Greece’s Cyclades Islands, that happens a lot. Learn more about our sailing tour in Greece .

From public markets and designer boutiques to European chain stores, Greece has every aspect of retail cornered.

If you are in the market for traditional Greek handicrafts, consider supporting the local economy by purchasing goods in the region that produces them. This includes silver from Ioannina; ceramics from Sifnos and Skopelos; and embroidery and lace from Crete, the Ionian Islands, Rhodes, and Skiros.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (Worry Beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical Skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece, and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colorful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewelry on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events in Greece

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travelers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.

Is it safe to visit Greece?

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travelers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Do you need a visa for Greece?

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while traveling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my cell phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

What will it cost for a...?

Greece’s unit of currency is the euro:

  • A takeaway souvlaki or gyros = EUR € 3-6
  • Bottle of wine from the supermarket = EUR € 5–8
  • Meal in a local cafe = EUR € 15
  • Meal in a nice restaurant = EUR € 20+
  • Ticket for the Acropolis (including other ancient sites) = EUR € 10-20
  • Domestic beer (Mythos or similar) at local bar = EUR €3-4.50
  • Espresso coffee = EUR €1.50

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

What is the weather like in Greece?

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself traveling by:

Extension Style

Best time for travel exploring greece and its islands featuring classical greece, mykonos & santorini.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Exploring Greece and Its Islands tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

On Tour Air Included

  • The cost of all internal flights on tour or within an extension are included into the total tour cost on our website and brochures.
  • Purchasing internal flights through Collette is now required on tours where applicable.
  • This price continues to exclude all round-trip air getting to and from the tour, as well as any additional air segments required to arrive at or depart from an extension.
  • The cost displayed is based on availability at the time of booking.

Today you have the choice between 2 activities. Your first option is to visit ancient Mycenae, an archaic city once ruled by mythological King Agamemnon, commander-in-chief of the Greeks during the Trojan War. Explore the excavations during a guided visit featuring the Beehive Tombs and the Lion Gate. Your second choice is to linger in Nafplio, and join a walking tour of Greece’s first capital city. During your tour, enjoy views of the island fortress of Bourtzi, which the Venetians fortified in the 17th century to protect the town’s harbor. Nafplio’s mix of Venetian and Neo-classical architectural influences make it Greece’s most elegant city.

Begin your trip with a 3-night sojourn in the Eternal City. Toast to your Roman getaway with a welcome dinner in a local restaurant. See the city with an expert guide, including an in-depth tour of the Colosseum. Enjoy ample free time to explore Rome's charms or join an optional tour to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica.Your other option is to book a pre stay?

  • Overnight Flight
  • Travel to the eternal city of Rome.
  • Get settled into Rome for your 3-night stay. Take time to get acquainted with the area on your own. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner featuring regional delicacies.
  • Start your morning with a locally guided tour of Classical Rome. Discover the city’s famous sights such as the legendary Aventine and Palatine Hills, the ancient Circus Maximus, and the Arch of Constantine. During an in-depth visit to the Colosseum, your guide recounts its rich history. The remainder of the day is yours. Perhaps you will join an optional dinner in a popular restaurant, where you’ll indulge in a hearty meal accompanied by wine and local entertainment.
  • Make the most of a free day in Italy’s capital city. Perhaps you will join an optional tour* to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica, taking in world-renowned wonders such as the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s mural of the Last Judgment. In the afternoon, consider strolling through the Borghese Gardens for views of the city’s skyline or meander through Rome’s bohemian Trastevere district.
  • Rome - Athens
  • Your Roman sojourn comes to a close today. Say Arrivederci Roma as you transfer to the airport for your flight to Athens.

Extend your tour longer with a 3-night stay in Istanbul, Turkey’s most popular city. Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures and legendary architecture. As the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, walk in the footsteps of centuries of travelers before you. From the towering Hagia Sophia to the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, you’ll find an indescribable blend of nostalgia and modernity. Full of authentic flavors and legendary cultures, a trip to Turkey is not one you’ll soon forget. Your other option is to book a post stay?

  • Athens - Istanbul, Turkey
  • Depart Greece and make your way to Istanbul, Turkey’s most popular city. Considered to be the bridge between the East and the West, Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures, complicated history, and legendary architecture. The city was the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires – which is seen through its blend of times-gone-by nostalgia and ever-evolving modernity. This evening, kick-start your exploration of Istanbul by sampling Turkish cuisine during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Discover the city with a local guide. Start your morning at the famous Hagia Sophia,* the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time it was built, this massive cathedral was the largest in the world. Continue on to the Blue Mosque,** where vibrant blue tiles line the building’s opulent interior walls. This morning also includes a visit to Topkapi Palace, the main residence of sultans of the Ottoman Empire. After free time for lunch, continue exploring Istanbul with your local expert. Make your way through the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, surrounding yourself with artisan crafts, buzzing energy, and exciting vendors. Enjoy an evening at leisure.
  • Start your day with a relaxing cruise on the Bosphorus, and see the city from a different vantage point. The rest of the day is yours! Explore the local boutiques or maybe taste the culture through Turkish favorites. Perhaps you will choose to go on an optional excursion to a Hammam Turkish bath, where you’ll enjoy an authentic scrub and foam bath.

You'll make your way through three neighborhoods in the city, full of hidden gems that few travelers ever get to see. Be welcomed into several local restaurants, bakeries and markets to sample some of the area’s best culinary specialties and wine. Your guide will explain the significance each dish serves to the culture and region. You'll learn about common grocery items found in the markets and the importance of spices used in Greek cooking. Along the way, view the traditional architecture and see historic artifacts from ancient Athens that were recently discovered.

Take a step into the past with a half-day excursion to the island of Delos, the fabled birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. After a quick 30-minute boat ride, allow your guide to introduce you to this sprawling UNESCO site. See how the Greek myths intertwine with prehistoric ruins, passing through narrow streets from the Hellenistic age. Tour the awe-inspiring House of Dionysus, a relic from the 4th-century BC containing ancient mosaics and preserved columns. Peruse the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Lake, and the guardian Naxian Lions with your guide before enjoying time to explore independently. Take in views of the Sacred Island of Delos as you ferry back to Mykonos.

Travel to the southern side of Santorini to the small traditional village of Megalochori, one of the most picturesque villages on the island, dating back to the 17th century. Embark on a walking tour through the narrow alleys and peek into the small shops, markets and churches for a taste of the local life. After your walking tour, make your way to a local restaurant. Savor regional cuisine during your delicious 3-course dinner in an open setting with breathtaking views of the rich, blue Aegean waters. Sit back and relax as you toast to your incredible experience.

"Dimitris was everything we could have looked for in a travel agent. Following the parameters we laid out for him, he provided us with the absolute best options for our travels. He was both honest and patient with us, and made sure we took as much time as we needed to finalize a trip that felt right for our group. Dimitris informed us on everything that was going on throughout our booking and travel process, so there were no surprises along the way. He answered every question we had and made sure we were prepared when we arrived in Athens. Andreas went above and beyond in his role as our skipper for the week. He was patient and thoughtful with our group, and put so much effort into making sure we had the best trip possible. We felt very safe and protected throughout all of our travels, and were taken to some of the most incredible place – places that weren’t even on our initial itinerary. Andreas’ expertise in his craft and his companionate demeanor are the reasons our trip was as fantastic as it was. He exceeded all of our expectations and genuinely made this trip one of the best of our lives. Thank you, Dimitris and Andreas, for giving us a week we will never forget! We can honestly say we would not have had the same experience if it wasn't for all of your help and consideration."

"BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep."

Greek Islands Tour Selection Trips

  • The Greek Islands are divided into six main groups, so you can choose a tour that either focuses on one group or on island-hopping among two or more
  • With more than 200 inhabited islands from which to choose, you could spend a lifetime trying to see them all – it’s more rewarding  to see them a few at a time
  • Small ship cruises are an ideal way to see the Greek islands, especially smaller, more off-the-beaten path isles where big ships can’t dock
  • Greek islands vary among desert  and lush, barren and forested, low-lying and mountainous, populated and sparsely occupied, undiscovered and trendy – choose your favorite(s)
  • Some of the best-known islands are overrun by tourists in the summer high season, so if your schedule allows, consider visiting in spring or fall
  • While Greece has suffered severe economic stress of late, don’t stay away – the locals are very grateful for visitors
  • If your focus is on touring mainland Greece, you can still find tours that add a nearby Greek island or two at the beginning or end

Bathing suits, sarongs, dresses, shorts, and party wear (if you are living it up in the Mykonos atmosphere) are popularly worn among tourists. Make sure to come prepared with sun protection, as it is very sunny and warm in Greece during the summer! Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses, and bathing suit coverups.

Light colors, flowy attire, linen, and strappy sandals are items frequently worn in the Greek Islands. While the weather is cooler during the spring and fall seasons, the temperatures in the Greek Islands remain moderate, so light jackets, long, flowy boat pants, and sweaters do the trick.

The Carpe Mundo Touch

Join us in Greece as we explore the beautiful Cyclades! This area is home to famous Mykonos and Santorini, but there are over 200 islands in the Cyclades and we will be visiting six of them on our Greek Islands Sailing tour. Our itinerary was chosen to allow you to experience Greece off the beaten path , while still having the opportunity to visit Athens, Mykonos, and/or Santorini before or after our tour. The islands we visit have a lot to offer- beautiful scenery, delicious food, great hiking and biking, beautiful beaches , interesting museums, ancient ruins, and more. There is one thing they are missing- the floods of tourists that descend on the more well known islands!  In addition to the charming towns where we will dock at night, we will visit remote beaches and bays where you can swim in the crystal blue water of the Aegean Sea. This trip is the perfect combination of fun activities and relaxation, of group time and opportunities to explore on your own.

This is the general itinerary that is used for the trip. Itineraries are subject to change based on weather, group preferences, and other circumstances.

Your Cyclades sailing adventure begins at the port of Parikia on the island of Paros, known for its golden beaches and white-washed shops and houses decked with bougainvillea. Ferry or fly to the island on your own in time for boarding your deluxe catamaran in the late afternoon. Your captain and trip leader welcome you aboard with refreshments and appetizers and will assign you to your cabin with private bathroom for the week. Meet your fellow travelers and get oriented to Paros’ many attractions, including  Ekatontapiliani (the “church with 100 gates”). Stroll back into town for dinner and drinks at your leisure; then tuck into your catamaran for the night.

Wake up to a typical Greek breakfast buffet of yogurt, coffee, fresh fruits and pastries and set sail for Sifnos. You’ll have the whole afternoon and evening to discover the island. Sifnos is a hiker’s paradise, with dozens of trails to explore and experience Greece off the beaten path. There are many other great options besides hiking… Borrow a snorkel and mask from your catamaran and dive into the warm, crystal clear waters. Stroll the maze of narrow streets and shops, rent a bicycle, or visit the archaeological museums. Pause for a prayer at the beautiful Church of the Seven Martyrs and explore the antiquities in Kastro, the old capital. Tonight, dine near the harbor or head inland to the tavernas of lively Apollonia, a town dedicated to the god Apollo. Apollonia is known for its fun yet unpretentious atmosphere and is the perfect place to enjoy Greek nightlife.

Leave lively Sifnos for the striking rock formations, caves and hot springs dotting unspoilt Milos. As you approach the island, you’ll be greeted by a colorful spread of boathouses; venture further to visit the Christian catacombs and the ancient amphitheater, built to hold 7,000 people. We can recommend several of the island’s dozens of beaches to laze upon, and point you to the hot springs. Head to the capital town of Plaka to visit its museums and castle. A popular way to experience Milos is by renting an ATV to tour around the island! As the sun sets, perhaps hire a taxi or drive an ATV to the port of Pollonia for a gorgeous view and lovely setting for dinner.  Watch the stars slowly reveal themselves as you return to your cabin and doze off to the gentle lapping of the sea.

After a leisurely breakfast, set sail to Folegandros, said to be “as beautiful as Santorini” with its cliffside setting and white-washed houses pouring down to the sea. Only 12 square miles, this gem of an island has less than 700 full-time residents. Venture to Chora (the main town), closed to cars but bustling with tavernas and shops under the trees. Take the bus or hike to find secluded beaches and villages. Time travel to the Middle Ages as you stroll along the Kastro, a small fortress built by the Venetians in 1210. Feel the magic of old Greece as you walk up the hill to the Orthodox church of Panagia for a panoramic view of the Chora and coast as the sun sets. Return to your catamaran to sip a glass of wine or grappa and watch the sunset from the deck.

Today’s exciting destination is Ios , in the heart of the Cyclades. Known for its great beaches, fun bars and tavernas, you will love this beautiful island. The main town, also called Ios, is located on a hillside marked by a double windmill. Explore the island’s numerous churches and chapels encircled within its crumbling medieval walls. Or, seek out the beautiful, domed 17 th century Church of Ayia Irini  on the west coast of the island. Archaeology enthusiasts can hire a taxi to visit the terraced ruins of Skarkos, an early Bronze settlement and one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Aegean. Tonight, join the party in town with a shot of grappa and some Greek dancing – or just relax onboard.

Catch the steady breeze and set sail for lively Naxos, one of the largest and greenest islands in the Cyclades. Wander through the old town’s market and meander around the Venetian castle, or join your trip leader and rent a bike or hike to a traditional village or particularly gorgeous beach. Venture further by renting a scooter or car to visit the island’s attractions (like the giant unfinished statue of Apollo in Apollon) as you wish. Drop into the church of Panagia Mirtidiotissa and Saint Georgios Diasorites to take in the artwork and beautiful frescoes. Walk through the Portara, the gateway to the unfinished Temple of Apollo.  Head to the old town for dinner and an evening stroll or partake in an optional cooking lesson with a local Greek chef before returning to your peaceful cabin on the Aegean.

Your last day sailing returns you to the island of Paros and the port of Naoussa where you’ll have a full afternoon to explore this beautiful island – its white marble quarries were used to create the famed Venus de Milo. Set off on your own to seek out one of several incredible beaches, such as Alykí beach with its ancient ruins, where you can laze on the beach and dive into the clear waters to cool off. If you enjoy wine, visit one of several wineries on the island where you can sample varieties of wine found only in this region! Tonight, toast your captain and traveling mates to your weeks’ adventures. Opa!

After one last hearty Greek breakfast, disembark your catamaran. You can extend your stay in Paros for the day or continue to other Greek destinations such as Santorini, Mykonos, or Crete, or journey homeward.

Greece tour highlights

Home to some of the earliest examples of Western civilization, not to mention the antiquities contained within their ruins, cerulean seas peppered with picture-perfect islands and lip-smackingly good cuisine served up in waterside tavernas, it’s no surprise that Greece is one of Europe’s most loved destinations. You can enjoy the quintessential Hellenic experience on our selection of small group journeys to Greece.

From cruising the lesser-known Aegean islands on board a traditional wooden caique, to walking the olive-shaded paths of Corfu or relaxing among the gorges and secluded coves of Crete: these are a few of our favorite Greek highlights.

Corfu Island

Often described as Greece’s greenest island, Corfu is lush, sprinkled with wildflowers and whitewashed buildings draped in fuchsia bougainvillea. Corfu may be known for its beach vacations, but the best way to explore is on foot. Immerse yourself in the sleepy way of life as you walk between pretty villages, rolling vineyards, shady olive groves and local tavernas. Corfu's longest-distance Corfu Trail, a 220km-long stroll around some of the islands highlights. With Explore you can choose the  Corfu Trail South  to climb the second highest peak of Agii Deka, visit isolated monasteries and a selection of beaches, or the quieter  Corfu Trail North  to cross the Karst Plateau and admire views of Albania. If you can’t choose, you can also do both trips back-to-back on our two-week  Corfu Trail Explorer .

Crete is Greece’s southernmost and largest island and comprises the best of what Greece has to offer in one 8,000 square kilometer dot of land. Crete is a feast for the senses: thousands of years of history, wild and unfettered natural beauty, beautiful Venetian towns along its striking beach-stippled coastline, plus a fragrant and surprisingly healthy cuisine packed with fresh Mediterranean produce. Our  Walking in Crete  holiday takes you through some of the island’s finest natural sights, including the White Mountains and the Samaria Gorge – Europe’s longest. In the lesser-visited south of the island you can walk the coastal paths to peaceful Loutro and Chora Sfakion and replenish in seafood tavernas where you can savor the day’s catch served with peppery greens and glorious golden olive oil.

Benvenuto in Italia! Your Italian tour begins on arrival at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), where you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel in the heart of Venice.

Romance and revelry meet in explosive colour along the shady canals and labyrinthine alleys of this spectacular city. Fine seafood, artfully arched bridges and glorious sunsets are just some of the reasons visitors flock to Venice each year.

Arrive early and settle in before meeting your tour director in the evening.

Spend today exploring the magnificent floating city of Venice. Follow you guide as you walk the narrow alleys and cross picturesque bridges over peaceful canals to discover the city's most beautiful sites, including the lively Piazza San Marco with its miraculous Byzantine basilica, the grand Doge’s Palace and the spectacular Rialto Bridge, which arches over the Grand Canal.

Later, you're free to explore this glorious city's twisting streets at leisure, perhaps paying a visit to the legendary Bridge of Sighs – a beautiful structure, so-named for its tragic history. Alternatively, choose to join an optional lagoon cruise to Murano and Burano, famous for glassmaking, lacework and brightly coloured stonework (surcharges apply).

In the early evening, climb into a gondola for a magical ride along the canals on your way to a decadent welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Optional Activity:

  • Murano & Burano Venitian Lagoon cruise (surcharges apply).

Gather your energy with a filling breakfast, then head south to beautiful Bologna. Soaring towers, stunning churches and lengthy porticoes paint a picture of rich architectural heritage. Take a guided tour of this warm and welcoming city and visit the Archiginnasio, home to the historic Anatomical Theatre. This awe-inspiring palace was formerly part of the University of Bologna – opened in the 11th century and thought to be the oldest university in the world.

Continue to Florence, the capital of Tuscany and known as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Spend your evening in your comfortable hotel and choose to step out into the glittering streets by night.

Rise and shine with a refreshing breakfast, then join a guided walking tour through the storied streets of this marvellous jewel of the Renaissance. With its extensive cultural heritage and far-reaching influence, Florence is a living expression of one of Italy’s most enduring artistic movements.

Admire the beautiful bustle of the Piazza della Signoria, the elegant grandeur of Florence Cathedral and its eye-catching red duomo and soaring bell tower, the octagonal oddity of the Battistero and the medieval Ponte Vecchio bridge, spanning the Arno River.

Spend the afternoon freely wandering the city of arts, perhaps choosing to visit the Uffizi Gallery for a chance to witness Botticelli’s masterpiece, 'The Birth of Venus’.

Wake to a hearty buffet breakfast and enjoy a day at leisure. Choose to wander the cobbled streets in search of ultra-delicious gelato, sit down for a plate of tagliatelle funghi porcini e tartufo (fresh mushroom pasta) or step into the Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze to see the statue of David, Michelangelo’s masterpiece (surcharges apply).

Alternatively, decide to join an optional full-day excursion to nearby Pisa, where you can see the famous leaning tower, and the Renaissance-era structure of Lucca, an Italian ‘City of Art’ (surcharges apply).

Optional activities:

  • Day tour of Pisa and Lucca (surcharges apply).

Waste no time this morning as you set out on the road to Chianti. The heart of Italy’s wine country, Chianti is an idyllic landscape of gently rolling hills and bucolic stone villages.

Above all, Chianti is known for its titular wine, produced primarily with red Sangiovese grapes. Let vibrant fruity notes and contrasting herbal tones dance across your palate as you join a tasting at one of the region’s best vineyards.

Continue to Siena, an historic city encircled by walls constructed in the Middle Ages. Follow your local guide through the streets to immerse yourself in the art, culture and traditions, then stop for an ‘aperitivo’ of local wine and light lunch in the renowned Piazza del Campo.

Later, depart for Perugia, where you’ll check in at your hotel and spend the evening at leisure.

Start your day exploring the university town of Perugia, famed for its arts festivals and cultural events. As the capital of Italy’s central Umbria region, this city boasts medieval palaces, a Gothic cathedral and Renaissance artwork aplenty.

Continue on to Assisi where Saint Francis, founder of the Franciscan Order, was born. Gaze upon the 13th-century basilicas of Saint Francis and his contemporary Saint Clare, who together established the ‘Poor Clares’ as a branch of the Franciscan Order.

This afternoon, depart for Rome and check in at your hotel. Spend the rest of your day acquainting yourself with this nonstop metropolis at your own pace.

No where does romance like Rome – this city is a buzzing blend of contemporary culture and rich history.

Step out on a morning discovery tour, marvelling at the cobbled alleys and impressive sites that pepper this urban landscape. Your tour culminates at enormous Saint Peter’s Square, right at the doorstep of Saint Peter’s Basilica and Vatican City. Join your guide as you enter the jaw-dropping Sistine Chapel. Turn your eyes to the heavens and survey the profoundly moving ceiling fresco, painted by the inimitable Michelangelo.

Later, choose to spend your leisure time absorbing the views at Piazza Navona and the incredible Pantheon. Don't miss your chance to throw a coin into the legendary Trevi Fountain and make a wish.

Indulge in a buffet breakfast at your hotel, then set about on a day of discovery at leisure.

Choose to view the masterworks of Caravaggio, Canova and Raphael at the Borghese Gallery, watch the playful resident cats of Largo di Torre Argentina leaping and lazing around the temple ruins, or cool off with a scoop at hidden gem Gelateria del Teatro.

Perhaps you’ll decide to join an optional art walk, visiting Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano and witnessing the grand sculpture of Moses at San Pietro in Vincoli (surcharges apply).

In the early evening, regroup with your fellow travellers for a sumptuous farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Cathedral art excursion (surcharges apply).

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel, then relax as you watch the Italian countryside roll by on your way to historic Pompeii.

Mark your arrival with a tour of the remarkable ruins and learn about their epic history. Wander the bones of this long-dormant city, eerily preserved in volcanic ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 BCE.

In the afternoon, savour a light lunch at a local vineyard and taste the full-bodied and fruity flavour of Lacryma Christi, made from grapes grown in the volcanic soil on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.

Spend the evening as you desire.

Fill up with an energising breakfast at your hotel, then spend your day freely exploring. Return to the eerie silence of the ruins for a deeper dive into history or stop at one of Pompeii’s many cafes and restaurants for fresh seafood or perhaps some delicious ragu.

Alternatively, choose to take an optional early tour to the exclusive island of Capri for a traditional lunch and a visit to a limoncello factory.

  • Capri day tour (surcharges apply).

Prepare for a full day cruising the incredible Amalfi Coast, sailing between the beloved towns of Positano and Amalfi.

This UNESCO World Heritage-listed region is renowned for its colourful houses and terrace towns that climb the steep cliffside. The coast is home to hidden gems such as the natural swimming hole of Bagni Regina Giovanna and Li Galli, the legendary home of the sirens. Stop at idyllic Positano and walk along the beach, then later disembark for a chance to explore the rainbow of structures, covered passages and awe-inspiring Piazza del Duomo.

Later, return to your hotel for a well-earned dinner and a relaxing evening in comfort.

Tuck into a buffet breakfast before making your way to sweeping Caserta. The astounding detail and architecture of the Royal Palace offer wonders both micro and macro as you stroll the grounds of the largest former royal residence in the world.

Later, continue to Rome for your final evening in Italy. Dust your hands with flour and put your kneading to the test at a memorable pizza-making masterclass, then dine with your fellow travellers at an unforgettable feast.

After breakfast, it’s time to wave goodbye as you board an economy-class flight onward to Athens International Airport (ATH).

Yassas, and welcome to beautiful Greece! Widely regarded as the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens is a bustling city that brings history to life. A plethora of archaeological sites shape its topography, and museums housing precious ancient artefacts pepper the landscape. Make no mistake, though – Athens is ever-evolving, drawing on arts, culture and cuisine to breathe new life into the ruins.

Your tour begins upon arrival at Athens International Airport (ATH), where you’ll be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel. The rest of the day is to be spent at your leisure. Choose to climb the sunny trails of Lycabettus Hill for one of the best views over Athens, then reward yourself with mouthwatering moussaka at a local restaurant. Soak up the atmosphere on the cobbled streets of the Plaka – Athens’ welcoming old town – or step inside and browse the myriad of traditional shops.

In the evening, meet with your tour leader for a sumptuous welcome dinner and the chance to get to know your fellow adventurers.

Wake to a filling buffet breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to the port and trade cobblestones for the cruise deck as you embark on a cruise aboard the Celestyal Discovery. Elegant design and comfortable cabins await as you’re welcomed aboard for your unforgettable four-night cruise through the spectacular Greek islands. From rugged cliffs to romantic ruins, your odyssey carries you through crystalline waters in the premium comfort of your exterior cabin. Arrive at vibrant Mykonos in the early evening and watch as the whitewashed houses and alleys light up in the glow of the island’s famous nightlife.

This evening, mark your departure with a welcome dinner of the freshest ingredients, prepared by local chefs.

Wake to the soothing sound of the Aegean Sea lapping at your doorstep and enjoy a hearty buffet breakfast aboard.

Gaze out over Kusadasi, one of Turkiye’s most popular resort towns and a launchpad to the ruins of Ephesus. One of the most important trading centres of classical Greece, Ephesus is a remarkably preserved monument to the region’s extensive history. Among the tumbled blocks and skeletal facades lie the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Continue to Patmos, famed for its biblical connections. Once the refuge of Saint John the Theologian as he wrote the Book of Revelations, this idyllic island has consequently earned the hefty title of ‘Island of the Apocalypse’.

Choose to take excursions ashore or relax in sun-drenched style on the deck – floating on Aegean waters, the ancient world is your oyster.

Tonight, savour the centuries-old flavours of traditional Greek cuisine as you watch the glittering lights along the shore.

  • Kusadasi shore excursion (surcharges apply).
  • Patmos shore excursion (surcharges apply).

Breathe in the salty air of another day on the Aegean. After breakfast, choose to relax aboard your Celestyal cruise, or opt to go ashore to magnificent Rhodes.

Renowned for its historic winemaking and picturesque medieval Old Town, here once stood the legendary Colossus of Rhodes – a gargantuan statue of the sun god Helios, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, since lost to the passage of time. Opt to step ashore and visit the Doric Temple of Athena in the hilltop Acropolis of Lindos. Wander into the Old Town of Rhodes and pass through the imposing Gate d’Amboise into the Knights’ Quarter, then rest your eyes upon the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes – one of very few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece.

Later, board your vessel once more and relax with another spectacular Greek dinner aboard.

  • Rhodes shore excursion (surcharges may apply).

After a restful sleep and an energising breakfast, you’re free to take the day at your leisure, unwinding in serenity or hopping ashore to explore Greece’s largest island, Crete.

Home to one of the earliest known civilisations of the Aegean, Crete’s ancient Minoan towns leave traces of the distant past scattered along its world-famous beaches. At the cusp of the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is also regarded as the birthplace of Mediterranean cuisine, full of fresh and fragrant ingredients to match the bright days and slow pace. Just outside the city of Heraklion is the Palace of Knossos, beneath which it’s believed lies the fabled labyrinth of the Minotaur.

In the afternoon, glide over the sparkling seas to Santorini. The breathtaking beauty of its white-terraced town and blue-domed houses is amplified by the fiery glow of the setting sun against the hillside. Volcanic sand beaches and panoramic views over the cliffs make Santorini a bucket list destination for travellers the world over. Opt to make landfall and wander the bright streets of this fantastical island community, making way for hard-working donkeys and stopping in for a glass of vinsanto – a refreshing local dessert wine.

Back aboard your vessel, tuck into another tantalising traditional dinner.

  • Crete shore excursion (surcharges apply).
  • Santorini shore excursion (surcharges apply).

Savour one last buffet breakfast aboard as you cruise into Lavrion, the Port of Athens.

Seize the day with a morning tour of Athens, led by your expert local guide. Stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympics in 1896, then gaze up at the surviving columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Visit the Hellenic Parliament and study the astounding artefacts of the Numismatic Museum of Athens – a collection of over half a million coins, medals, gems and stamps dating back more than 3,000 years.

Stand in awe at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, marvel at the neoclassical Academy of Athens and survey the millennia-old structure of Hadrian’s Arch.

Complete your Athens adventure with a trip to the legendary Acropolis. This ancient citadel lords over the city with the weight of history as its foundation. Circle your way up the mountain, stopping to discover numerous cultural sites and hidden remnants on your way to the jaw-dropping Temple of Athena Nike. Instantly recognisable and utterly unparalleled, this ancient temple has stood in dedication of deities Athena and Nike – goddesses of wisdom and victory, respectively – since approximately 420 BCE.

Later this afternoon, check into your hotel and spend the rest of your day freely wandering the streets of this historic metropolis. If you prefer, spend your time relaxing in your hotel with stunning views of the nearby Acropolis.

Today’s itinerary is yours to write. While away the hours at the stunning Acropolis Museum and dig deeper into the countless relics of this historic site. Sit down at a local cafe and sample anise-flavoured ouzo over freshly rolled dolmades.

For the history enthusiasts, opt to join a full-day tour of nearby Delphi, famed for its mythic oracle at the dramatic Temple of Apollo.

  • Delphi full-day excursion with lunch (surcharges apply).

After breakfast, it’s time to wave goodbye as you transfer to the Athens Airport (ATH) and say farwell to your European journey.

Roman pizza is legendary for its light, crispy deliciousness and is a must-try for anyone visiting the Italian capital. With a leavening process that requires at least 48 hours of rest and reliance on simple, traditional ingredients – including rich tomato sauce, fresh green basil and smatterings of buffalo mozzarella cheese – pizza-making in Italy is more art than science. Dust your hands and learn how to make pizza the traditional way with an included masterclass before feasting gloriously on your creation. There’s no better way to taste an authentic slice of Rome.

Set sail on a boat ride down the Amalfi Coast to the charming village of Positano. The sun-kissed cliffs and azure waters become your canvas, painting a masterpiece of beauty and serenity that stretches as far as the eye can see. As your boat glides along the coastline, each bend reveals a new panorama that defies description – picturesque towns nestled in the embrace of hills and colourful umbrellas lining beaches that beckon with their crystalline allure.

Drop anchor in the clear waters of Positano and venture through the pastel-hued buildings pressed along the cliff face. Choose to bask in the sunshine beneath a beach club umbrella and feed your soul with the freshest pasta and seafood on offer.

Embark on a journey of enchantment and discovery as you set sail on a four-night cruise through the captivating Greek Islands. Your adventure begins in the city of Athens, where the echoes of ancient civilisations still reverberate through the streets. From there, you'll glide across the azure waters, feeling the gentle caress of the sea breeze against your skin, stopping at the vibrant island of Mykonos, where you will uncover its charming whitewashed buildings and lively atmosphere.

Continue sailing until you find yourself in Rhodes, a realm where medieval grandeur melds seamlessly with Mediterranean beauty. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, and let the stories of knights and traders transport you to another era. Then, the mystical allure of Santorini beckons – a place where sunsets paint the sky in hues of gold and pink, casting a spell of serenity upon all who behold them.
