MATTA Fair Penang 2024 kicks off with 300 booths

G EORGE TOWN: The two-day Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2024 has opened its doors at Setia SPICE Arena here.

Featuring some 300 booths promoting international and domestic travel packages, the event includes various offerings from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who launched the event, said the influx of tourists is integral to the state's economy, providing employment opportunities, business ventures, and bolstering its overall economic growth.

"MATTA has played a pivotal role in promoting our country, particularly Penang, as a premier tourism destination.

"I am pleased to announce the maiden voyage of two prestigious cruise liners, Costa Deliziosa and Serenade of the Seas, each capable of accommodating up to 2,500 passengers.

"This significant milestone underscores the strategic importance of Penang's Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal and the allure of Penang as a tourism hub for Malaysia," he said.

Chow added that Penang's accessibility continues to expand, with direct flights from 15 international cities, including Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Banda Acheh, Ho Chi Minh City, Doha, Haikou, and Shanghai.

"Penang boasts eight domestic flight routes, with 17 airlines operating direct flights, including MAS, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Fly Dubai, Starlux, Xiamen Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Juneyao Airlines, among others.

"As a result, the airport has recently recorded a 5% increase in passengers movement from 313,000 to 328,000 from February to March this year," he added.

MATTA Penang chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said a sales revenue of RM40mil is expected at this year's fair compared to the RM33mil recorded last year.

"MATTA is committed to aligning with the aspirations of state tourism, and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts in promoting tourism and cultural enrichment.

"Each year, we strive to enhance our international participation by inviting more foreign embassies to showcase their cultural richness and new destinations at the fair. This serves as a dynamic platform

for cultural exchange and exploration of exciting travel opportunities.

"In introducing our esteemed travel exhibitors, we aim to enrich the fair experience by offering additional attractions and fostering closer connections between nations," she said.

The highlight of the travel fair will be the lucky draw prizes which will see visitors winning air tickets from flydubai, Xiamen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Air Arabia to destinations like Dubai, Xiamen, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Visitors who buy any domestic packages by securing a RM300 deposit per person will stand a chance to take part in the lucky draw to win an air ticket to a domestic destination while anyone who buys an international holiday package with a deposit of RM1,000 will be eligible to win an air ticket to an international destination.

Besides air tickets, visitors who take part in the lucky draws also stand a chance to win hotel stays, staycations, tour vouchers and admission tickets

The fair, held today and tomorrow (April 27 and 28) will be open from 10am to 9pm.

SABAH TOURISM LOOK NORTH AT THE MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL MART (MITM)

PENANG: The Sabah Tourism Board, along with 4 travel agents, are at the at the SPICE Convention Centre set to showcase Sabah as one of Malaysia’s hidden gems at the 2022 Malaysia International Travel Mart (MITM) travel fair in Penang.

Many holiday packages are on offers during the fair from the most sought after islands in the Semporna’s waters to others consumer’s choices like Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang, Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and Kinabalu Park among others.

The islands off Semporna, Sabah was a popular hit for both agents and consumers as many outbound agents are offering Semporna apart from other international destination and buyers are still lingering at the Sabah Tourism booth towards the final hours of the first day.

Featured products on display that are gaining traction is the rural tourism product where visitors can experience natural nature’s theme park and learn about how the people in these areas are connected through Community Based Tourism in interior part of Sabah such as in Tenom.

Sabah Tourism is also partnering with one of the nation’s e-wallet provider, Boost, to add value to consumers experience during the fair with RM100 e-wallet voucher.

Sabah Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer, Noredah Othman said that Sabah Tourism will continue its mission to promote Sabah as preferred destinations for all Malaysian in the upcoming MITM Fair in Kuala Lumpur.

I road tripped from Springfield, Missouri to New Orleans, Louisiana in a 1992 Ford Econoline that I camped out of with my partner and dog. I spent seven months working for a glamping company in Moab, Utah. On my weekends, you could find me roaming the Utah desert. I once rappelled 200 feet into a canyon near Zion National Park. I have camped on the Gulf of Mexico in 45 mile per hour winds. On summer weekends, I can be found exploring the Ozarks by kayak. My experiences have taught me how much time, research, and logistical planning go into experiential travel. This is why I created Trail Spice Travel. I am here to do the hard work for you before your trip so you can fully engage in learning the history of a quaint town, taste test street food that is important to a city and feel comfortable having a conversation with a local about their culture and way of life. I understand that one travel plan does not fill all. MATTA Penang Chapter is pleased to inform that we are organizing MATTA Fair Penang 30 September - 1 October 2023 at Setia SPICE, 108, Jalan Tun Awang, Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Penang. Please be informed and to take note of the following registration system: 1. Registration shall be made through the official Booking Form, accompanied with Registration Fee (Non-Refundable) of RM500 and a Security Deposit of (Refundable) of RM500 per booth. 2. Even though exhibitors have registered, exhibit companies are reminded that booths are NOT guaranteed but subject to availability of booths in the hall. 3. Upon a company registration, our office will issue an invoice of the total cost involved to your company for payment for your participation in the MATTA Fair Penang. 4. The Organizer reserves the right to cancel, postpone or shorten the MATTA Fair Penang in the event of any unforeseen circumstances that are beyond the control of the Organizer. 5. A Spicy Story – How Pinch Was Born

Pinch Spice Market was born in 2012 after Founder Thomas “Shoebocks” McGee left his 9-to-5 job and followed his passion for cooking and exploring global flavors.

His curiosity with food began at an early age thanks to his mother. She developed an appetite for international fare when she lived in South Africa as a child. Later, as a single mom raising three kids on a social worker’s salary, she wasn’t able to take her kids globe-trekking to explore cultures and new dishes, but she would hunt down authentic restaurants and treat them to tastes from around the world (which wasn’t an easy feat when you lived in upstate New York in the 80s).

Thomas was floored by how much cuisine varied depending on where you lived, and intrigued by all the flavors the Earth provides. He wanted to learn, see and taste it all. He would come home from those special dinners and teach himself how to recreate them, breaking down the ingredients so he could build them back up into a homemade meal.

He still does that reverse engineering of dishes today, and it drives him to source and create the best tasting, highest quality organic spices on the planet.

In 2019 his life partner, Meaghan Thomas, became his business partner too. After years of benefiting from Thomas’ cooking and Pinch’s infinite bounty, Meaghan left her executive marketing job to join Pinch full time. Together, they work to get high-quality, affordable organic spices into more kitchens and help support farming communities around the globe.

Meet Thomas & Meaghan

Thomas (co owner, founder) and Meaghan (co owner, president) are partners in life, and in spice.

Thomas grew up in upstate New York, spending many of his days at the local dojo practicing karate, and nights teaching himself how to cook. After graduating high school, he went to Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia for a business degree (and lots of surfing). After graduating around the dawn of the millennium, he landed a job in Chicago as a research analyst. Over the next decade he continued his culinary exploration, experimenting with making BBQ blends, baking and delighting his friends and family with global meals made from scratch. In 2012, he leapt into the spice trade and has never looked back.

Meaghan grew up in Chicago and its suburbs, spending most of her childhood bouncing between juvenile jail or bizarre child reform institutions. It’s a whole story, and she’s an open book about it . Thanks to the help of others, she eventually got her GED and went to college for journalism. After a brief but beloved stint as a reporter, she fell into digital marketing at the right moment when no one really knew what it was, and was able to convince a start up to hire her. She spent the next 15 years in online marketing before she jumped into Pinch full-time with Thomas.

When Thomas and Meaghan are not in the Louisville spice factory, they’re probably cooking, riding bikes, metal detecting, exploring new restaurants, dreaming about their next travel adventure or cuddled up with one of their rescue pups (Pepper & Briscoe) and a foster dog.

SOME 300 booths promoting international and domestic travel packages at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2024 were all snapped up even before the registration date closed on April 15.

The fair's organising chairman for the third consecutive year, Carolyn Leong, said this indicated the promising growth of the state's tourism industry.

"The booths have all been taken up even before the registration date closed.

"This shows the confidence the travel agents have in the fair, which also augurs well for the state's efforts in promoting local tourism," she said recently, adding that the tourism industry is picking up again and travellers are eager to resume exploring the world.

She said the fair will not only feature travel agents offering attractive packages to international destinations but also domestic travel agents who will be promoting Penang to Penangites and holidaymakers alike from the northern region states such as Kedah and Perak.

"Therefore, to encourage domestic players, MATTA Penang is subsidising 50% of the booth price for them.

"Besides featuring Penang's attractions and charm as a heritage city, the state's tourism booth will also highlight attractions and holiday spots in other parts of Penang such as Balik Pulau's greenery and durian orchards as well as other activities found on mainland Penang," she added.

The fair that will be held at the Setia SPICE Arena on April 27 and 28, is expected to draw some 35,000 visitors.

The booths set up at the arena and concourse areas will feature both domestic and international exhibitors representing a diverse range from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Leong said a sales revenue of RM40mil is expected at this year's fair compared to the RM33mil recorded last year.

"The fair will be a one-stop venue for everyone's travel needs offering fantastic deals, be it domestic or international packages.

"We have Malaysian Airlines as our official airline and RHB Bank has come in too," said Leong, who is also chief executive officer (CEO) of Angel Tours Sdn Bhd.

Attractive prizes await

The highlight of the travel fair will be the lucky draw prizes which will see visitors winning air tickets from flydubai, Xiamen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Air Arabia to destinations like Dubai, Xiamen, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Visitors who buy any domestic packages by securing a RM300 deposit per person will stand a chance to take part in the lucky draw to win an air ticket to a domestic destination while anyone who buys an international holiday package with a deposit of RM1,000 will be eligible to win an air ticket to an international destination.

Besides air tickets, visitors who take part in the lucky draws also stand a chance to win hotel stays, staycations, tour vouchers and admission tickets.

Leong said the fair will feature halal tourism or Muslim-friendly travel packages too which has been gaining popularity.

She noted that the favourite travel packages this year includes China due to the one-year visa waiver programme between Malaysia and China, and other countries such as Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Dubai, Indonesia and Thailand.

“This is due to the increasing number of direct flights between Penang and these destinations, and vice-versa.

“We are also seeing a high demand for Australia, especially Western Australia such as Perth,” she said.

As for domestic packages, Leong said Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak remain the most popular places for local travellers.

The fair on both days will be held from 10am to 9pm.

A family ferry trip across to Dublin has its fair share of drama

But first there’s that long drive to Holyhead

‘W e should really check that,’ I say to my wife about our son’s passport, which we’d suddenly remembered might be going out of date soon. With a sharp dart of sweating horror, I grab it from the drawer and discover it has indeed expired, just two days earlier – and we are due to fly to Dublin in six days. We decide our only option is to book ourselves on to a later ferry instead.

The problem with the ferry is it means six hours of driving through England and Wales. (And if you’re wondering whether our kids were sick during this trip, you’ll be delighted to know that our daughter vomited twice before we’d even reached the M25. Our son, perhaps affected by the miasma, or maybe sensing a deficit in attention, caught up and was himself sick three times, before his sister chimed in with one last spew 20 minutes before we reached the boat, to make it a creditable 3-3 draw.)

Well and truly wiped – in every sense – we stumble onboard with three and a half hours of seafaring ahead of us. Luckily, the ferry itself is great. As a rural Irishman myself, I recognise my people everywhere I look. Almost every male adult here could give you a quote for a horse and a lift to collect it. Moreover, about 80% of the passengers are children en route to sporting tournaments, which adds an air of prestige to proceedings.

Any time spent on a boat reminds one how odd it is that air travel is such a drudge. The latter is, after all, new. The miracle of human flight was solely the province of poets and sorcerers until about a century ago. Two of my grandparents never saw the inside of a plane in their entire lives. Sea travel, by contrast, has been a staple of human existence for at least 50,000 years, and yet its wonders remain intact.

My kids crowd the windows to watch the vast expanse of water surrounding them. We cheer when we see land or another ship somewhere in the distance. There is everywhere the convivial feeling of people making the best of a situation beyond their control, like red-faced holidaymakers drinking it up in a Greek hotel during a power cut.

A man at the bar reacts to my daughter’s crying not with disgust but kindly laughter and asks me to pass a lemonade to his son, the under-15s Taekwondo champion of Kildare. Admittedly, half an hour spent tumbling around the soft play area with 115 shoeless children would have you wondering how often kids wash their feet, but it’s a small price to pay for a mode of transport that gives your irritable brood a decent runaround.

It seems to have ended too quickly, as we tumble downstairs to the car, ready for the last 30 minutes of our journey. As we disembark, we wonder why it is we don’t do this more often. ‘I feel sick,’ says our son, and suddenly we yearn for airport drear.

We make our own ginger beer from scratch and it's the best.

Pumpkin Beer

This is a seasonal ingredient you might not find easily year round. In fall it is quite common to see pumpkin beer at larger beer and wine stores as well as craft breweries. This ingredient is essential for giving this drink its pumpkin flavor.

Once you have those two ingredients, the rest can easily be found in your kitchen or home bar.

Ingredients:

• 2 oz premium vodka
• 1/3 cup ginger beer

• Splash of club soda
• 1/4 oz fresh lime juice
• Cinnamon stick for garnish
• Apple slices for garnish

Instructions:

• Fill a moscow mule mug with ice.
• Add vodka and fresh lime juice.
• Top with ginger beer, pumpkin beer, and a splash of club soda.
• Garnish with a cinnamon stick and apple slices and serve.
