"By Any Other Name" (TOS50)

Stardate 4657.5 : Extra-galactic beings commandeer the Enterprise in an attempt to return home.

Rojan and his fellow Kelvans have journeyed from their native Kelva in the Andromeda galaxy , assuming Human form to determine if this galaxy is suitable for colonization by the Kelvan Empire . Now ready to return home with their report, Rojan lures the Enterprise with a false distress call and succeeds in taking over the ship. The Kelvans intend to use it for transportation back to their home in Andromeda. Preparing for the 300- year journey, Rojan, Kelinda , and the other Kelvans transform the Enterprise crew into small, tetrahedral blocks — save for Kirk , Spock , McCoy , and Scott . Spared from the conversion process, the four plot to regain control of their vessel. To do this, they take advantage of the aliens' newly-acquired Human emotions. With the aid of carefully cultivated jealousy, a little food, alcohol , and drugs, the Kelvans soon find themselves at each other's throats, enabling Kirk and company to retake the Enterprise and restore the crew to normal. The Kelvans realize that they cannot return to Andromeda: now too Human to survive there, they agree to permit the Federation to locate a habitable world for them to settle on.

Original air date: February 24, 1968

It all starts when Kirk, Bones, Spock and two Red Shirts beam down to a planet to investigate a distress signal from a crashed ship. Turns out, it was just bait put out by the Kelvans who have decided this galaxy is suitable for colonization. Kirk tells them they're quite welcome to some of the galaxy's uninhabited planets. The Federation might even be willing to aid them. However, the Kelvans do not settle, they conquer. And now they're going back to the Andromeda galaxy to tell everyone the wonderful news! Oh, and they'll be needing the starship Enterprise to get there. The trip should only take 300 years, more or less.

By Any Other Tropes:

  • And I Must Scream : The neural neuralizer that the Kelvans use to freeze people in place shuts down all voluntary systems. They can still blink and presumably hear since Rojan continues to talk to them, but they can neither move or speak.
  • Becoming the Mask : The Kelvans pose as humans for practical purposes, but they become enamoured by the new senses their human bodies provide them with. Kirk uses this to his advantage.
  • Black Dude Dies First : Averted. The cute girl gets crushed to dust while the black Red Shirt is spared.
  • Blatant Lies : Spock asks Rojan if he's jealous that Kelinda spends time alone with Kirk. "Of course not!" Rojan answers, obviously aggravated.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality : The Kelvans have apparently rejected pretty much damn near everything to focus on intellectual pursuits. Including emotion and senses, but they still have notions of honor and duty.
  • Buffy Speak : By the time Scotty gets down to one of his last, last secret supplies of hooch, he's so sloshed that the only description he can come up with for it is "green".
  • Can Only Move the Eyes : The effects of the Kelvan stunning device used in the beginning.
  • A reference is made to Spock's method of escape from Eminiar VII in "A Taste Of Armageddon".
  • The episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is not only referenced, they use Stock Footage from it (though the remastered version uses all-new effects shots). The Kelvans ran into the barrier on their way into this galaxy, which is why there's only five of them, and why they need the Enterprise in the first place (their ship got smashed). The Enterprise , meanwhile, gets through it a hell of a lot better than last time - not even a single exploding console.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy : Rojan becomes increasingly jealous of Kelinda spending time with Kirk. His jealousy gets so bad that he demands that she stay away from Kirk under the threat that Kirk will be neutralized if she doesn’t. He also starts a physical fight with Kirk after seeing him and Kelinda kissing.
  • Drinking Contest : Scotty manages to drink a Kelvan under the table. Then he takes away the passed-out Kelvan's magic belt buckle, planning to get it to Captain Kirk... right after he takes a little nap.
  • Easily Forgiven : Justified. Kirk is willing to overlook how the Kelvans hijacked his ship, and how one of them killed one of his crew members, in order to talk them into peaceful settlement like he'd tried to at the beginning of the episode. Why justified? Well, you try telling Sufficiently Advanced Aliens that they're on trial for first degree murder.
  • The Empire : The Kelvan Empire. Rojan implies they've got several species under their thumb... er, tentacles. Problem is, their home in Andromeda's getting a little too radioactive, so the solution is to spread out to other galaxies. And then conquer them.
  • Food Pills : Kelvans insist this is a more efficient method of nutrition, until they try real food.
  • Forgotten Phlebotinum : For the journey to Andromeda, the Kelvans make upgrades that allow the Enterprise to travel safely at many times her previous top speed. The upgrades are still in place at the end of the episode, but they're never referred to again.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With : Spock describes the Kelvans' true forms as being very Cthulhu-like.
  • Genre Savvy : Kelinda has studied human literature, and as a result she can tell that Kirk is trying to seduce her! However, she welcomes his advances.
  • Go to Your Room! : Rojan orders a frustrated and angry Hanar to confine himself to his quarters.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs : Rojan is so angry to find Kelinda with Kirk that he lets himself be drawn into a fistfight, even when Kirk dares him to just use his paralyzer. This proves to be the last straw that convinces him that he can't control the physical and emotional responses that come with taking human form.
  • Green-Eyed Monster : Rojan can't stand it when Kelinda is with Kirk.
  • Human Aliens : The Kelvans have taken on human "shells" which, to all appearances, look and function like ours. And saves on the effects budget.
  • Humanity Ensues : The more time Kelvans spend as humans, the more human-like they become.
  • Intoxication Ensues : The crew takes advantage of the Kelvans' unfamiliarity with their new human bodies to employ two variations: Scotty drinks one of them under the table, while Bones tricks another into taking stimulant injections until he starts acting like a hyperactive child who just washed down a bag of candy with a pot of espresso.
  • Leitmotif : Bagpipes for Scotty.
  • Literary Allusion Title : Kirk quotes a line from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Kelinda, who is fascinated by flowers. "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
  • Literally Shattered Lives : Rojan smashes Yeoman Thompson as a way of intimidating Kirk into letting him have the Enterprise .
  • Love Makes You Stupid : Rojan completely forgot he had a belt buckle that could freeze people or turn them into crushable blocks when he saw Kirk kissing Kelinda and attacked him with his bare hands. Kirk even points it out; he's too angry to think straight, and was already overstimulated before this .
  • The Main Characters Do Everything : A justified example. The Kelvans reduce all "non-essential" crew members to ceramic blocks; "non-essential" turns out to mean everyone barring Kirk, Spock, Bones, and Scotty, and thus it naturally falls to these four to regain control of the ship. Furthermore, due to these characters' high ranks and vital functions note  Kirk is the ship's captain (useful for communication between the Kelvans and the Enterprise crew), Spock is both First Officer and Chief Science Officer (same as Kirk plus useful for identifying/dealing with any scientific phenomena the ship may encounter), Bones is Chief Medical Officer (necessary for any medical emergencies), and Scotty is Chief Engineer (needed for any potential repairs to the ship) it makes perfect sense the Kelvans would deem them "essential" relative to the rest of the crew.
  • Manly Tears : A half-drunk Scotty sheds them when he realizes he has to sacrifice his rare bottle of aged whiskey to save the ship. Keep in mind, he earlier had no qualms about taking everyone's life including his own to keep the Kelvans from accomplishing their objectives. Liquor is Serious Business . The tears turn into Tears of Joy when that bottle manages to get the Kelvan under the table. A proud Scotty kisses the bottle. Scotty: We did it, you and me! Right under the table!
  • Men Are the Expendable Gender : Subverted when Yeoman Thompson takes one for the team.
  • The Milky Way Is the Only Way : Not only will the journey to Andromeda take several hundred years, there is also an energy barrier surrounding the Milky Way and blocking the way out that the Enterprise barely manages to cross.
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read : When Spock glimpses into the Kelvan's minds, he feels a surge of mental pain from their incredibly complex thoughts.
  • Neutral Female : When Kirk and Rojan get into a brawl, Kelinda stands around looking helpless, even though she's armed with a paralysis ray that could easily bring the fight to a halt. Given that she's a Kelvan woman overstimulated by Kirk's romance, she's no doubt still processing the new emotional experience of being fought over (physically included).
  • No-Sell : In order to get out of their cell, Kirk judo-chops Kelinda. After they get caught seconds later, she just casually strolls on past and takes her stuff back.
  • "Not So Different" Remark : Rojan says to Kirk, "I think we're somewhat alike, captain." Because Rojan is the leader of his crew, and he recognizes that Kirk suffers when his crew suffers.
  • Objectshifting : Aliens from the Andromeda Galaxy have a device that can change people into a small geometric solid. The resulting solids can be easily crushed, killing the original person.
  • Orgasmically Delicious : Bones remarks that if one of the Kelvans enjoys his food much more, he'll need a diet.
  • Playing Sick : Spock puts himself into a trance to make the Kelvans think he needs to go to sick bay.
  • Real Men Wear Pink : Or real aliens in the form of men.
  • Red Shirt : Yeoman Thompson is the only female redshirt during TOS's run (a "redskirt")— the only other female Enterprise crewmembers to die on-screen were Lt. Tracy from "Wolf in the Fold" and Lt. Galway from "The Deadly Years", but they both wore a blue uniform rather than a red one.
  • The trip is said to take 300 years. Still, going at warp 11 for any length of time is bound to turn anyone into chunky salsa.
  • That said, the trip being several million light years is an acknowledgement that even for Sufficiently Advanced Aliens, travelling to the next galaxy is gonna take a hell of a long time. Space is big.
  • The energy barrier that surrounds the Milky Way. Just attempt to guess the requirements to envelop an entire galaxy (and probably at least part of its halo).
  • Sense Freak : Kirk's plan to wrest control of the ship relies on driving the Kelvans to distraction by bombarding them with physical and emotional sensations they don't know how to handle.
  • Sick Captive Scam : After Kirk, Spock and Doctor McCoy are imprisoned by the Kelvans, Spock places himself in a trance in order to appear to be ill. McCoy tells the Kelvans that Spock needs to be taken to the Enterprise in order to be cured, and they fall for it.
  • Smart People Play Chess : Spock screws with Rojan's new and unfamiliar tendency toward emotion while beating him at chess.
  • The Spock : The Kelvans fit this trope better than Spock himself, as he quickly surmises, although assuming human form makes them capable of emotion.
  • Starfish Aliens : What the Kelvans are in their true forms, as Spock glimpses briefly. Apparently they're giant squidlike things with a hundred arms, each of which they can control on independent tasks simultaneously. That'd be a strain even on a modern CGI budget, never mind Trek's (at least, not without looking seriously goofy). They also have no concept of love, food, drink, or the like, having given all of it up in favor of intellectual pursuits.
  • Stock Footage : The Enterprise returns to the galactic barrier, seen in the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". All footage of the barrier is recycled from the earlier installment.
  • Suicide Mission : At first, they consider blowing up the ship rather than letting the Kelvans have it, but Kirk insists on taking a third option.
  • Through His Stomach : The Kelvans are offered food and drink to make them more amenable.
  • Title Drop : When Kelinda is fascinated by flowers on the planet's surface, Kirk mumbles, "a rose by any other name." He then explains that this is a quote from the great human poet William Shakespeare .
  • Two of Your Earth Minutes : The Kelvans' planned voyage should take only "300 of your years." Are Earth time periods common knowledge across multiple galaxies?
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"? : And flowers? And food? And booze? And drugs? The Kelvans are unused to human sensations.
  • What Ever Happened To The Mouse : We never actually get a chance to see what happens to Scotty and Tomar after Kirk makes peace with the Kelvans.
  • Kirk would to escape from a desperate situation. Of course, he "apologizes" later.
  • Rojan kills Yeoman Thompson, a rare female Red Shirt .

Star Trek: The Original Series 'By Any Other Name'

When the U.S.S. Enterprise answers a distress call from a small planet, the landing party is captured by a group of agents from the Kelvan empire, located in the distant Andromeda galaxy. The Kelvans' purpose is to find planets suitable for colonization. However, their own ship was destroyed and now they need the Enterprise to make the 300-year journey home. To utilize the starship, the Kelvans - huge, tentacled creatures - take on human form. After several attempts at escape, Kirk accepts his fate and agrees to let the aliens take over his ship. The Kelvans use their technology to transform all but essential Enterprise personnel into small "cubes" which, unless broken or damaged, can be restored to human beings. jssor_1_slider_init(); [ Complete Screencap Index ] Recognizing that the Kelvans, in their new human bodies, are discovering human sensation and emotion, the remaining crew attempts to foster dissent amongst the aliens: Scotty succeeds in gettting one of them drunk, McCoy injects an irritant into another, and Kirk makes romantic overtures to the Kelvan leader's woman. With the Kelvans thus distracted, Kirk and the crew are able to regain control of the ship. Kirk points out to Rojan, the Kelvan leader, that the Kelvans are already becoming less like they were before by encountering the humans. In 300 years, their descendants will be so human-like that they won't be able to live among their people on Kelva. Rojan sees the logic in his argument and sends a robot probe to Kelva, reporting what has happened. Pledging to restore the Enterprise crew, Rojan accepts Kirk's offer that the Enterprise find the Kelvans a Class-M planet to colonize.

‘Star Trek’: Long-Lost Original USS Enterprise Model Finally Makes the Voyage Home

The model was used for the pilot and credits of the original 'Star Trek' series.

The Big Picture

  • The original USS Enterprise model has been found in a storage locker after going missing for decades.
  • The model was used for the original unaired pilot and opening credits of Star Trek: The Original Series .
  • Rod Roddenberry plans to restore and display the iconic starship model in a museum for public viewing.

The original model of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series has been located, after spending several decades missing — not in some distant region of space, but in a storage locker. The model has been returned to Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry , the son of original Trek creator Gene Roddenberry . ABC News reports that the three-foot-long model was given to Gene Roddenberry after the original Trek series ended in 1969, and graced his desk for several years before he loaned it to the makers of 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture . The model disappeared shortly afterward and remained missing until it turned up on eBay last year. It had been discovered in a storage locker by parties unknown, who contacted action site Heritage Auctions. Although the model would fetch an enormous price at auction as a one-of-a-kind pop-cultural artifact, an arrangement was made between the finders and Roddenberry, whose father died at 70 in 1991.

The model in question was the first finished model of the iconic starship; it was used for the series' original unaired pilot episode, "The Cage," which was later incorporated into a two-part episode , "The Menagerie," before it was released in full in the 1980s. It was also used for the shots of the Enterprise seen in the show's opening credits. A larger model was later created for the rest of the series; that model is currently on display at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum . Roddenberry intends for the original model to find a permanent home, as well:

"This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere."

What Is the USS Enterprise?

The flagship of the United Federation of Planets' Starfleet, the USS Enterprise is a Constitution-class starship from the 23rd century. It was originally captained by Robert April, who appeared on Star Trek: The Animated Series before appearing in live-action for the first time in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . April later passed on command to Christopher Pike , whose adventures are currently being chronicled in the prequel series Strange New Worlds . After Pike was promoted to fleet command, James Kirk was given command of the ship, taking it on a five-year mission that kicked off one of science fiction's most enduring franchises.

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , then-Admiral Kirk stole the Enterprise to journey to the unstable Genesis Planet and reunite his friend Spock's mind with his body; during that adventure, Kirk had the ship self-destruct to prevent it from being seized by the Klingons. It was later replaced by a near-identical ship, the Enterprise-A ; many subsequent Federation ships have borne the name, up to the rechristened Enterprise-J in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard .

The son of Roddenberry and actor Majel Barrett , Rod Roddenberry is the chief executive officer of Roddenberry Entertainment. He currently executive produces the latest generation of Star Trek series, including Discovery , Strange New Worlds , Picard , Lower Decks , and Prodigy .

The original model of the Enterprise is now back in the Roddenberry family. Viewers can see it in action in Star Trek: The Original Series , which can be streamed on Paramount+.

Original ‘Star Trek’ Enterprise Model Is Found After Being Missing for Decades

The 33-inch model surfaced on eBay after disappearing around 1979. An auction house is giving it to the son of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek.”

A model of the U.S.S. Enterprise stands on a wooden base against a black backdrop.

By Emily Schmall

The first model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series , has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.

“After a long journey, she’s home,” Mr. Roddenberry wrote on social media on Thursday.

For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.

Mr. Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.

The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.

The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said on Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, Calif., Mr. Maddalena said he knew it was real.

“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Mr. Roddenberry.

Mr. Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said on Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution. He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.

“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”

It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.

The original U.S.S. Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard C. Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Company, a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows .

An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum , where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.

Mr. Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.

The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.

“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Mr. Roddenberry said.

“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100 percent the one,’” he said.

Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 , kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.

Mr. Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Mr. Roddenberry’s desk.

“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said on Saturday.

The model went missing after Mr. Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Mr. Maddalena said.

“This is a major discovery,” he said, likening the model to the ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz,” a prop that was stolen in 2005 and recovered by the F.B.I. in 2018, and that Heritage Auctions is selling.

While the slippers represent hope, he said, the starship Enterprise model “represents dreams.”

“It’s a portal to what could be,” he said.

DALLAS — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry's son decades after it went missing.

The first model of the USS Enterprise is displayed April 13 at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles. The model — used in the original “Star Trek” television series — has been returned to Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, the son of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, decades after it vanished in the 1970s.

The model's disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model's return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he's thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves," Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

Heritage's executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they'd discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn't go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it," Rod Roddenberry said.

Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, left, and Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, the son of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, view the recently recovered first model of the USS Enterprise on April 13 at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles, decades after it disappeared.

The 3-foot model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show's original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot version featured in the series' episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of  cultural phenomena,  with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can't get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless," Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is," he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

The first model of the USS Enterprise's  disappearance in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall.

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn't something he'd thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don't think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he'd thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years," he said with a laugh.

Barbara Bouchet and Warren Stevens in Star Trek (1966)

Quotes

Kelinda : These are lovely. Captain Kirk, what is it you call them?

Captain James T. Kirk : Flowers. I don't know the variety.

Kelinda : Our memory tapes tell us of such things on Kelvan - crystals that form with such rapidity, they seem to grow. They look like this fragile thing, somewhat. We call them sahsheer.

Captain James T. Kirk : [mumbles]  A rose by any other name.

Kelinda : Captain?

Captain James T. Kirk : A quote from a great human poet, Shakespeare. "That which we call a rose by any other name... would smell as sweet."

Captain James T. Kirk : Yes, well, I don't usually go around beating up beautiful women.

Kelinda : Why not?

Kelinda : [upon being kissed]  Is there some significance to this action?

Captain James T. Kirk : Well, among humans, it's, uh, meant to express warmth and love.

Kelinda : [understandingly]  Oh. You are trying to seduce me.

[Kirk and Kelinda are passionately kissing]

Kelinda : Rojan has forbidden me to see you.

Captain James T. Kirk : Yes, that's too bad. Why do you defy him?

Kelinda : It is not a question of defiance. We were told to find out everything we could about you.

Captain James T. Kirk : M-hm. And how is the research going?

Kelinda : I need some more experiments.

[kisses him again]

Rojan : [to Kelinda, indicating Kirk]  And you. You would wish to remain with him?

Kelinda : He's most interesting. But I wish to go with you. I believe I owe you an apology.

[she kisses him]

Kelinda : Do you really regard this touching of the lips as pleasurable?

Captain James T. Kirk : I did.

Kelinda : Curious. Let me try.

[She kisses him. Rojan enters]

Rojan : Is there some problem, Captain?

Captain James T. Kirk : Not when I came in.

[Kirk exits]

Rojan : What did he want here?

Kelinda : He came to apologize for hitting me. Apparently it involves some peculiar touching contact.

Rojan : In what manner?

[She kisses him]

Rojan : [nearly chuckling]  Very odd creatures, these humans.

Kelinda : This cultural mystique surrounding the biological function.

Captain James T. Kirk : Yes?

Kelinda : You realize humans are overly preoccupied with the subject.

Captain James T. Kirk : Yes, we do think a great deal about it.

Kelinda : I've done some supplemental reading on it, and, er...

Captain James T. Kirk : You have a question?

Kelinda : Yes. I was wondering, would you please apologize to me again?

Star Trek: Discovery Just Brought A Legendary Original Series Episode Back Into The Mix

Let's fly ... away from spoilers . Read no further if you haven't watched the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the strangest of them all? In "Star Trek," that title goes to one of the zaniest concepts ever introduced into the canon: The Mirror Universe. The idea of our alternate selves living completely different lives somewhere out there is no longer the sole domain of perhaps the nerdiest franchise in all of sci-fi (although shows like "For All Mankind," "Foundation," and "3 Body Problem" are creating some stiff competition), the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the best episode of "Community" ever made . Fans might be surprised to find out that many in the scientific community believe the theory is worth discussion these days . But "Trek" put its own unmistakable fingerprints on the multiverse by emphasizing one in particular that stands at odds with the usual Prime Universe -- one that poses a fundamentally moral dilemma between the paragons of Starfleet we know and love, and the absolute worst versions of themselves.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that "Star Trek: Discovery" would use its final season to travel full circle and return to the Mirror Universe that played such a significant role back in season 1 (even if, ironically, there might be a parallel universe out there where we were able to see  former showrunner Bryan Fuller's more complex and nuanced take on it ). But what's sure to shock and delight longtime fans in episode 5, aptly titled "Mirrors," is a deep-cut reference to arguably one of the most influential hours of "Trek" ever made, and the one that introduced the Mirror Universe in the first place.

A Different Kind Of Black Mirror

There might not be any sinister goatees or chest-baring V-necks in sight throughout this episode of "Discovery," but the lasting effects of "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" are plain to see. Upon entering the wormhole that took scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) into multidimensional space, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) discover the wrecked remains of their ship ... alongside the still-functioning husk of a familiar-looking Starfleet vessel, emblazoned with the name, "ISS Enterprise." For those who haven't brushed up on their 1967 "Trek" lore (and, quite frankly, shame on you if that's the case), Burnham helpfully points out that this isn't exactly the same starship captained by the fabled James T. Kirk thousands of years ago. It's one that has somehow found its way from the depths of the Mirror Universe (the exact specifics are oddly brushed aside) and remained stranded ever since.

But then "Discovery" goes a step further and hearkens back to "Mirror, Mirror" more thematically. While exploring the derelict ship, Burnham and Book stumble upon information about the previous occupants of the ISS Enterprise and specifically that of a certain Kelpian who rose from a slave to a leader in his own right. That, of course, refers to none other than the Mirror version of Saru (Doug Jones) seen in season 3, whom Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) saved from certain death and pointed towards his proper path. Where the ending of "Mirror, Mirror" suggests that Mirror Spock is still "a man of integrity" despite the ruthlessness of the Empire he serves, "Discovery" reconfirms that even the comically rampant evil of the Mirror Universe is no match for the stubborn idealism of "Trek."

New episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" stream on Paramount+ every Thursday.

All the Stars Attending the 2024 White House Correspondents' Dinner, Hosted by Colin Jost

The star-studded dinner is a celebration of the First Amendment at its core, but media outlets always manage to sneak a few A-list celebrities onto the guest list

We've reached the weekend of the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner — the most star-studded event in political journalism — when celebrities, government officials and the president of the United States join White House reporters in celebrating the First Amendment right to a free press.

While the prestigious dinner (and the glamorous parties sandwiching it) is intended to bring journalists together, they have also become a hotbed for celebrity sightings, as media outlets bring along A-list talent in an unspoken competition of who knows who .

For the 2024 WHCD on Saturday, April 27, SNL 's Colin Jost was tapped to deliver the roast of President Joe Biden — and he'll have plenty of entertainment peers in the room watching. Aside from the president, vice president, first lady, second gentleman and all your favorite news anchors, here are the biggest stars attending this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Molly Ringwald

Pretty in Pink actress Molly Ringwald will attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner as one of ABC News' guests of honor. Ringwald, 56, recently starred as Joanne Carson in FX series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans , which is now streaming on Hulu.

ABC News, FX and Hulu are all owned by Disney, likely explaining why the news network signed her up.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph

Newly minted Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph will join in the weekend festivities as another of ABC News' A-list guests. Fresh off a successful award season for her supporting role in The Holdovers , Randolph, 37, is one of the most exciting names in Hollywood right now.

As Hulu's Only Murders in the Building teases its upcoming fourth season , in which Randolph may reprise her role as Detective Dee Williams, ABC is no doubt excited to bring her along.

Theo Wargo/Getty

Jon Hamm will be CBS News' star celebrity guest during this year's WHCD events, likely in connection to his work with the network's parent company, Paramount. The 53-year-old Mad Men alum joined the cast of two upcoming Paramount projects: Landman , a drama series about big oil in Texas, and Transformers One , an animated film that will exist within the Transformers world.

He is reportedly arriving with his wife, actress Anna Osceola .

Keri Russell

Keri Russell , 48, recently handed fans of The Americans a new favorite show with Netflix's The Diplomat , in which she stars as a rugged foreign service officer thrown into the more polished role of U.S. ambassador to the U.K.

Now, she'll get a chance to live like her on-screen character, attending the WHCD as an esteemed guest of Deadline.

Rosario Dawson

Araya Doheny/Getty

Rent actress Rosario Dawson , who is very active in politics and even dated New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker for two years, will appear at the White House Correspondents' Dinner for the second year in a row as a guest of ABC News.

Dawson, 44, plays the titular character in Star Wars: Ahsoka on Disney+, and recently starred in the 2023 film Haunted Mansion , solidifying her ties to the Disney family.

Rachel Brosnahan

Frazer Harrison/Getty

Rachel Brosnahan of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fame will join CNN's entourage on Saturday, April 27, as she prepares to enter the DC Comics Universe with her starring role as journalist Lois Lane in the 2025 Superman reboot . DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures — which are producing and distributing the film, respectively — are both owned by CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.

Political thriller fiends may also remember Brosnahan, 33, for her recurring role in House of Cards as former sex worker Rachel Posner, a love interest of White House chief of staff Doug Stamper.

Naomi Biden

First granddaughter Naomi Biden — the eldest daughter of Hunter Biden — had a memorable moment in the national spotlight during her 2022 White House wedding , and is no stranger to the White House Correspondents' Weekend events. She will be a guest of ABC News this year.

Biden, 30, has obvious ties to politics, but she also married a political junkie. Her husband, Peter Neal , interned at the White House during the Obama administration, and contributed to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Both Biden and Neal are now Ivy League law school graduates.

Caitlyn Jenner

Mike Marsland/Mike Marsland/Getty Images for Sky

Caitlyn Jenner , 74, will again join Fox News at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The former Olympic gold medalist and reality TV star waded into conservative politics during California's 2021 gubernatorial recall election , landing in 13th place.

Months after her bid for governor, Jenner was hired as an on-air contributor for Fox News.

Shannon Finney/Getty Images for The Rocket Foundation

Quavo , 33, will attend the dinner as a guest of ABC News. The rapper rose to stardom as one-third of the hip-hop group Migos , which also featured his nephew, Takeoff. In 2022, Takeoff was shot and killed while attending a private party in Houston with Quavo.

Now building a solo rap career, Quavo has also turned to activism. In 2023, he met with Vice President Kamala Harris and members of Congress to advocate on behalf of "millions of families" who have been effected by gun violence, and in March, his foundation launched an initiative that will grant $100,000 to organizations that are working to minimize violence in his local Atlanta community.

Colin Jost & Scarlett Johansson

Gisela Schober/Getty

You can't have a White House Correspondents' Dinner without a host, and this year, emcee Colin Jost is expected to arrive with his wife, Scarlett Johansson , for moral support before taking the stage.
