A new “ Star Trek ” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

During a Paramount Global investors day presentation in February of 2022, Abrams announced that a new “Star Trek” movie would begin shooting by the end of that year with the Pine-led crew. Pine and his co-stars reportedly had no idea Paramount was moving forward with another “Star Trek” film, which was eventually removed from the studio’s film slate in September of that year.

Haynes recently directed six episodes of the “Star Wars” series “Andor,” starring Diego Luna as the titular role. He also helmed the “Star Trek”-inspired episode of “Black Mirror,” titled “USS Callister.” Haynes is repped by WME and attorney Peter Nelson.

Grahame-Smith is best known as the author of the best-selling novels “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” He also wrote and produced 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie.” Grahame-Smith is repped by WME and attorneys PJ Shapiro and Wendy Kirk.

Deadline was first to report the “Star Trek” news.

The Star Trek “Origin” Movie Is Finally Going Into Production

The new Star Trek prequel movie is set to be revealed on the big screen. Probably.

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock (Mr. Spock) in the STAR TREK: The Origina...

For 30 years — from 1979 to 2009 — the longest wait between new Star Trek feature films was seven years. And, for most of that period, from the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) to Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), there was almost always a new Star Trek movie in theaters every two to four years. But after the wildly successful J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film in 2009, the release clip for Trek movies went from maximum warp to impulse power, to glacially slow. And now, by the time the next Star Trek movie hits theaters, it will have been about 10 years since the previous one — Star Trek Beyond — beamed into cinemas in 2016.

Since that time, for Trekkies, updates of a new Star Trek film have been very similar to the game football Lucy plays with Charlie Brown; just when a hypothetical movie sounds real, it gets snatched away. But now, there’s a glimmer of hope. Thanks to reports out of CinemaCon 2024, it looks like, the next Trek film is scheduled for release in either 2025 or 2026. But what’s it about? And will it really happen?

Star Trek 14 is “an untitled origin story”

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in 'Star Trek' (2009).

The new “origin story” will be set before the 2009 reboot. But how many decades before?

During CinemaCon 2024, Paramount confirmed several in-development projects including a live-action GI Joe / Transformers crossover (teased in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts ), a hardcore Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie, a remake of the sci-fi thriller The Running Man (from Edgar Wright), the confirmation of an Avatar trilogy, and the assertion that a new Star Trek feature film will go into production this year, with a release date soon to follow.

Since 2016 to now, there have been at least five different attempts to make a new Star Trek film, either as timey wimey direct sequel to Beyond (“Star Trek 4”) a one-off space mobster movie (Quentin Tarantino’s script) or something else entirely (Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman’s attempts that remain undisclosed). But now, although Paramount is reportedly developing a sequel to Beyond — which would feature the reboot cast from the 2009 film one last time — the next Star Trek movie is not that sequel, but instead, as previously reported , an “origin story” that “takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.” This movie has been confirmed to be directed by Toby Haynes ( Andor, Doctor Who ) with a script from Seth Grahame-Smith ( The Lego Batman Movie , Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter) .

Wait? Wasn’t the 2009 film an “origin story?” While the answer to this question is technically a “yes,” the 2009 film (just titled Star Trek ) was also partially a time-travel sequel to the canon established in The Next Generation , and literally everything else in the Trek franchise up until that point. By saying the new prequel film takes place “decades before” the first reboot, this could hypothetically mean that the movie takes place in both the Prime and Kelvin timelines simultaneously.

TLDR: The Trek timeline diverged in the first reboot movie, beginning in the year 2233, so, a story set even a few decades before that divergence, in the 2210s or 2220s or earlier, would be consistent with all versions of Trek's future history. Presumably, the “origin story” won’t take place in the two decades between the prologue of the 2009 film (2233) and the main story (2258), because honestly, even for hardcore Trekkies that’s a big canon headache. So, sometime in the early 2200s, but before the 2230s is probably the best bet. And, even if the movie was set a bit earlier than that — say in the late 2180s or 2190s — we’d still be dealing with a very early point of Starfleet history that has never been depicted and that we know almost nothing about. Hence, if you squint — and don’t think about the prequel series Enterprise (2151-2161) too much — then yes, we’re looking at an origin story in which pretty much anything could happen.

Star Trek “origin” movie release date

LOS ANGELES - DECEMBER 1: The USS Enterprise during the opening credit for in the STAR TREK: The Ori...

One of the earliest shots of the USS Enterprise — from the 1964 Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage.” The new prequel film will likely be set half a century before this moment.

While some tweets out of CinemaCon seemed to indicate that the new Star Trek movie could hit next year in 2025 , TrekMovie confirmed that the “Untitled Star Trek Origin Story,” is on the Paramount slate for 2025 or 2026. TrekMovie also predicted that 2026 is more likely, writing, “If Paramount can move fast enough they could get the origin movie into theaters by 2026 — in time for Star Trek’s 60th anniversary.” Then again, 2025 is not impossible, it’s just cutting it a little close.

It should also be noted that the entire corporate entity of Paramount is reportedly close to a merger that would see it purchased by Skydance Media, the same production company behind the three existing J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboots. If that deal is finalized soon, then, yes, this Star Trek feature film might actually happen very quickly. And if it doesn’t, there will still be plenty of new Star Trek shows streaming , not to mention the first direct-to-streaming standalone Star Trek movie, Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh, which will hit Paramount+ sometime later this year.

All the reboot Star Trek films (2009-2016) are currently streaming on Paramount+. The previous ten films (1979-2002) are all on Max.

Star Trek Origin Movie Confirmed by Paramount, Logline Revealed

Paramount Pictures confirms a new Star Trek movie soon to release separate from the long-gestating Star Trek 4.

Star Trek has been dormant on the big screen for a long time, but the franchise is looking to get back into theaters within the next two years. At CinemaCon, Paramount unveiled its titles for the company's movie slate for 2025 and 2026, officially confirming plans to release a major Star Trek film during this time.

Previously, it was reported that a new Star Trek film was in development that's separate from the planned sequel to 2016's Star Trek Beyond . The film slate reveal has now officially confirmed that the project is in development, and as it's currently untitled, it's listed as Untitled Star Trek Origin Story . Also confirmed to be on board are director Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ), writer Seth Grahame-Smith ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ), and producer J.J. Abrams .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Gets Renewed, Lower Decks to End With Season 5

A brief logline was provided by Paramount, describing the project as " an origin story that takes place decades before the original 2009 Star Trek film ." This is also confirmation that the prequel is connected to the 2009 movie along with its two sequels. Given the timeline, it can be expected to follow an all-new cast of characters, though there are likely to be references that connect the film to the other Trek movies.

Star Trek 4 Is Still in the Works

Meanwhile, Star Trek 4 remains in active development, even after multiple false starts over the past several years in getting made. In March, it was reported that the project was getting back on track with The Flight Attendant co-creator Steve Yockey signing on to write a new screenplay for the movie. Franchise star Zoe Saldana recently addressed the project's slow development, sharing how she still had hope the movie would see its eventual release.

What Is Star Trek: Discovery's Spore Drive and How Does It Work?

"I still have hope. I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team,” she said on The Playlist's podcast . “I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on Star Trek, which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so."

The untitled Star Trek prequel is expected to be released in 2025 or 2026, but a release date hasn't yet been set.

A New Star Trek Movie Will Explore the Origins of Starfleet

J.j. abrams will produce a new star trek movie set on the kelvin timeline, before his 2009 film..

A new Star Trek film is beaming up.

Star Trek has been doing quite well on TV of late but it’s time to beam back to the big screen. While a fourth Star Trek film on the Kelvin timeline is still in the works , now a new project has been revealed too.

Toby Haynes, who helmed episodes of Andor , will direct the film from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith ( It, Lego Batman ). J.J. Abrams will once again produce, which makes sense since the film is set decades before the events of his 2009 Star Trek film.

Deadline broke the news, and while there are no specifics on what the film will entail, it’s described as an origin story. We already saw the origins of all the main characters in Abrams’ original, so we are making the educated guess that Starfleet would be front and center.

The film comes at a time when Star Trek is thriving on TV with fans loving shows like Strange New Worlds , Picard , and Lower Decks . However, those shows are all on the Star Trek Prime timeline. This movie, like 2009's Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond, is on an alternate Kelvin timeline. A timeline that was created when the Romulan Nero was sent back in time by accident during the explosion of a Supernova that destroyed the Romulan homeworld.

And, as mentioned, a fourth film on that timeline—with those original cast members, such as Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana—is still in the works. But, as has been proven on TV over the past few years, fans can handle more than one Trek , and this origin story seems to be the later iteration.

A New ‘Star Trek’ Prequel Film Is in the Works at Paramount

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Star Trek keeps moving further and further back in time. The space franchise is constantly growing – it counts 13 movies and the original Star Trek TV show has quite literally been renamed Star Trek: The Original Series to differentiate it from all its spin-offs.

The latest addition to the Star Trek saga, however, arrives in the form of a film. The news was announced at Paramount CinemaCon and while there aren’t any specific plot details, the movie will serve as a prequel to 2009’s Star Trek, which was directed by J.J. Abrams and starred Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.

For the forthcoming Paramount film, Toby Hanes, who directed Andor , will be directing the flick, while Abrams will return to produce. Seth Grahame-Smith is writing the script. Paramount has yet to give word on a potential timeline or cast for the film.

Paramount has begun development on and then ultimately scrapped several Star Trek spin-offs in the past few years, including a Quentin Tarantino -directed project, so fans shouldn’t bank on any particular project making it to theaters until there’s actually a trailer.

‘Star Trek’ Origin Story Movie Will Be Set Decades Before 2009 Film

CinemaCon 2024: The new project will be produced by longtime “Star Trek” steward J.J. Abrams

star-trek-2009-chris-pine-zachary-quinto

Paramount Pictures is ready to boldly go (again).

After rumors circulated earlier this year, Paramount officially announced a new “Star Trek” prequel film on Thursday, this time taking place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” feature.

“Andor” director Toby Haynes will direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (who is also writing another hotly touted CinemaCon title, the third “Now You See Me” film). J.J. Abrams is returning to produce.

But then again, we’ve heard about a new “Star Trek” movie before.

star trek yeni film

During the run-up to “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, it was revealed that a fourth film would reunite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk with his deceased father (played, once again, by Chris Hemsworth). A year later, Quentin Tarantino approached Paramount about doing a “Star Trek” movie – this time as an R-rated gangster movie (based, in part, on the 1968 episode of the original series “A Piece of the Action”). In 2018 S.J. Clarkson, a TV vet who would eventually direct “Madame Web,” was hired to direct the fourth film in the Abrams-verse, but salary disputes led to Pine and Hemsworth leaving the project. That version was canceled in 2019 and Tarantino stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be making his “Star Trek” either.

In November 2019 “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new “Star Trek” film based on his version of the series. A year later, this movie was canceled by new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts. In 2021 “Star Trek: Discovery” writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired to write a version based on her original pitch, but a separate script was being developed by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The studio even set a summer 2023 release date for a new “Trek” (which “Trek” was the question).

In 2021 that release date was pushed to Christmas 2023, under the direction of “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires were brought on to retool the script. In early 2022 it was announced that the stars of the three previous “Star Trek” installments in the Abrams-verse would all be returning, although it was later reported that the actors had not entered negotiations to return.

In 2022 Shakman left “Star Trek” to join Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four.” But just last month Steve Yockey was hired to write a fourth “Star Trek” movie.

Now, we are finally getting word of another film in development, with another writer/director team. But it’s not the first time that a “Star Trek” prequel script has been floated, as Erik Jendresen, cowriter of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” had submitted a script for “Star Trek: The Beginning” before J.J. had taken over and pitched his 2009 version. It depicted the Earth-Romulan War.

Star Trek: Section 31 filminin çekimlerine başlandı

Star trek: section 31, paramount+'ta i̇zleyici ile buluşacak.

Everything Everywhere All at Once filmindeki performansıyla Oscar kazanan usta oyuncu  Michelle Yeoh , Section 31 filminde Philippa Georgiou rolünde geri dönecek.

Star Trek: Discovery'nin yönetmenlerinden Olatunde Osunsanmi'nin yöneteceği Section 31'in oyuncu kadrosunda Michelle Yeoh'a Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez ve James Hiroyuki Liao eşlik edecek.

Star Trek Prequel Movie In The Works With Star Wars Director

Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of Black Mirror, Doctor Who, and Andor, is lined up to make a Star Trek movie.

By Eddie Makuch on April 11, 2024 at 12:06PM PDT

A Star Trek prequel movie is in the works with Star Wars director Toby Haynes attached to direct, Paramount announced during CinemaCon. This has been rumored since January , and now it's confirmed. The movie is set for release sometime in 2025.

Haynes previously directed episodes of Doctor Who, Black Mirror, Sherlock, and the Star Wars series Andor. Collider reported on these details from CinemaCon.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote The Lego Batman Movie, is writing the untitled Star Trek film. Haynes has never directed or written a Star Trek movie, but he directed Black Mirror's Star Trek-inspired USS Callister episode.

The film is said to be an "origin story" that will take place prior to the events of 2009's Star Trek, which took place in 2255 and was itself an origin story. This likely means it will feature a different cast. The stars of the latest series, including Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, have been rumored to be coming back for a fourth film in their series, but it hasn't happened yet.

2016's Star Trek Beyond is the latest entry in the main Star Trek movie series, but the franchise has lived long and prospered on streaming with the TV shows Picard and Strange New Worlds.

The 2009 Star Trek reboot and its 2013 sequel Into Darkness were directed by JJ Abrams, before he handed off directing duties to Justin Lin for Star Trek Beyond. The three movies collectively earned around $1.2 billion at the global box office.

In addition to Pine, Saldana, and Quinto, the latest Star Trek movie series featured John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Yelchin tragically died in 2016 at the age of 27 after a motor vehicle accident in his driveway.

Why Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Star Trek’ Film Should Be His Last

The Movie Critic had a lot going for it. Too much, as it turns out. The film was meant to be Quentin Tarantino’s 10th and final, until production fell apart and Sony officially shelved the project at Tarantino’s request. And while this may not seem all that odd at first glance—movies often come apart at the seams—the late-breaking nature of the cancellation is noteworthy. Tarantino famously begins and abandons projects all the time, but never ones already in pre-production.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , The Movie Critic plot began as one thing before veering off-track. Sources revealed a meta-like angle to the story, with old characters from the Tarantino universe appearing. It also allegedly morphed from a movie about a real-life 70s film critic (supposedly based on Jim Sheldon of The Hollywood Press ) into something of a Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood prequel.

From the sounds of it, Tarantino might have caved to the pressure of his own self-assigned legacy. His vow to cap his filmography at 10 movies necessitates going out with a bang.

But what if instead of bowing out with a comprehensive meta-fairytale, Tarantino zagged? What if he returned to an older abandoned project and used his final film as a way to shake up the movie industry—perhaps forever? That’s something a disrupter like Tarantino would probably enjoy, at least in theory. And maybe ending with something wildly unexpected could remove the pressure valve and let the auteur phase peacefully out of film and into whatever comes next. (He’s hinted that he’d like to spend his later years writing novels .)

This is why it’d be fun and genuinely subversive if Tarantino’s final film was one he teased long ago—an R-rated Star Trek movie. But before we dig deeper into the reasons this would be an unexpected move for the director, let’s take a quick look back at the project and where it currently stands.

Tarantino’s Star Trek Film Might Have Been the Franchise’s “Greatest”

In a recent interview, screenwriter Mark L. Smith—who was set to collaborate with Tarantino on a Star Trek script—revealed that the film could have been the “greatest Star Trek film”. He also confirmed that the director feared ending his cinematic career with a pre-existing franchise.

“Quentin and I went back and forth, he was gonna do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films,” Smith told Collider. “I remember we were talking, and he goes, ‘If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?’ And I think that was the bump he could never get across, so the script is still sitting there on his desk.”

Tarantino, a longtime fan of the Gene Roddenberry-created series, envisioned a “largely earthbound” story set in the 1930s and loosely inspired by the 17th episode of the original series, “A Piece of the Action.” Smith said the two watched gangster films together for inspiration and that the film would have been full of gory, Pulp Fiction -esque action as well as time travel. It was meant to star the current Star Trek movie cast, including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.

In 2019, Tarantino said that he was moving on from directing the film—but that it could still be made without him. “It’s a good idea,” he told Consequence of Sound . “They should definitely do it and I’ll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.”

So the film moved off his plate—but that doesn’t mean it can’t come back. Tarantino changes his mind all the time. His uncertainty is one of his more refreshingly relatable qualities. Who can’t identify with the constant need to fuss indecisively about big-stakes projects? He famously abandoned The Hateful Eight after the script leaked online, only to come back and complete it. So moving on from Star Trek doesn’t mean it’s really the end. And returning to the project actually makes a lot of sense when you consider the rest of his career.

It Would Be a Subversive Choice—for the King of Subversive Choices

Tarantino radicalized the film industry with Pulp Fiction back in 1994. While his first film, Reservoir Dogs , was a critical hit, it was Fiction that made the director a household name. That film, with its self-referential style, non-chronological storytelling, and bursts of shocking violence, became a postmodern classic and is largely considered one of the greatest films ever made. It was also highly subversive at the time of release, in the era of more traditionalist, sentimental fare like Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption .

Now, at first glance, bowing out on a Star Trek film sounds far from subversive. Star Trek is a beloved property spanning back to the 1960s—a franchise that consistently sees new output. But while it might seem like a “safe” choice, it would really be anything but. It’s rare to see beloved filmmakers at the top of the industry dip into someone else’s franchise. Think of Tarantino’s peers like Paul Thomas Anderson or the Coens and imagine them making a Star Wars or Marvel film. Sounds almost silly, right? At the very least hard to wrap your head around.

Tarantino abandoning preconceived notions about what his final film should be is in keeping with his whole… thing. He isn’t one to make traditional choices. He’s a Tinseltown rascal, someone intent on crafting a wholly unique legacy. The “10 films and done” thing is based on nothing but his own self-actualized mythmaking. Going out with Trek —that’s a move no one else of his stature would make, which makes it the perfect move for him.

It’s in Keeping With His Love of Vintage TV and Genre

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood revealed a new side of Tarantino—or at least a previously unrealized special interest. He’s always been a lover of vintage pop culture, from the pulp novels that inspired Pulp Fiction to the blaxploitation influences in Jackie Brown to the spaghetti Western vibes of Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained . But with Hollywood , we learned that he also has a deep respect for classic television. The film is packed full of references to real shows like Lancer, The F.B.I., The Green Hornet, and Bonanza , with nods to backlot production that reveal a deep well of behind-the-scenes knowledge.

Star Trek was also a show of this era. In fact, the original series ended in 1969, the year that Hollywood takes place. Tarantino’s interest in late 60s/early 70s Hollywood meshes nicely with Star Trek ’s origins, so ending in that universe would in many ways be its own kind of meta tribute. It wouldn’t be wildly out of line to stick Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in there, perhaps as an actor playing a Trek villain—with stunts by Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth. Doesn’t that seem like a very Tarantino thing to do?

And while Tarantino’s never officially dipped into sci-fi, it’s clearly a genre he enjoys. He’s cited Back to the Future, The Thing, Mad Max: Fury Road , and The Matrix as some of his favorite films . It seems, then, that Star Trek could be the perfect vehicle to delve deep into a world and genre he’s long admired, and could leave his quintessential mark on.

It Could Forge a Bold New Path for Franchise Filmmaking

We’re in a weird era of franchise filmmaking. The Marvel Cinematic Universe took a major hit these past few years, a shocking turn of events for one of the most reliable blockbuster churners of the 21st century. Fans seemingly grew fatigued by the constant onslaught of superhero fare, a problem that’s extended to DC and Sony films as well. And with other major franchises, from Star Wars to Harry Potter , seemingly on pause while their studios plot next moves, we’re left with a bit of a dearth in 2024.

But one way to revitalize IP? Bring in the big guns. Letting respected auteurs helm franchise movies—especially with less corporate-mandated oversight—can yield brilliant results with enough trust. Think of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune , Brian DePalma’s Mission: Impossible , Sam Mendes’ Skyfall , or even Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther . Properties with varying degrees of reliability to the behemoth Trek franchise. But pairings that elevated their films from run-of-the-mill content to respected and beloved cinema.

Now what if we take that one step farther? What if, instead of just pairing a hotshot director with big-brand IP, we also let them carry that IP from family-friendly to a hard-R rating? It’s a risky move, but not an unprecedented one. Think of the success of the Deadpool films, soon to be an official Disney property. There’s an audience for gnarly, grown up films. And luckily, there’s enough gentle Trek already in the ecosystem for the younger fans to play in until they’re ready for a Quentin Tarantino bloodbath. Targeting adults is a wise move—and it would let these franchises evolve beyond the safer plots we’ve come to expect.

It Might Embolden Other Auteur Artists To Enter the Trek Universe

Another cool thing that could come from Tarantino stepping into Trek ? It could lure other notable directors into the fray. The Trek universe has a lot of big-name fans, many of them directors. Seth MacFarlane, Brad Bird, Ben Stiller, Edgar Wright, and Olivia Wilde are all Trekkies and have expressed interest in the franchise. Even Ridley Scott almost made a Star Trek film.

If Tarantino really did choose to end his legacy career with Trek , it could throw the door wide open—in more ways than one. And after such a storied filmography, paving a new frontier—the final, in Tarantino’s case—of possibility would be a perfect grace note for one of the most beloved, fascinating, and admired filmmakers of all time. It’d be a real thrill to see him go boldly where no director of his status has gone before.

Star trek: voyager's janeway becoming ripley from alien explained by producer.

Brannon Braga explained his surprising inspiration for the Star Trek: Voyager season 3 episode where Captain Janeway becomes Ripley from Alien.

  • Captain Janeway's "Ripley" moments in "Macrocosm" left a notable impact on Star Trek: Voyager.
  • Brannon Braga didn't intend to copy Alien with "Macrocosm," instead wanting to create a dialogue-light episode.
  • "Macrocosm" allowed Janeway to showcase new action-hero qualities while retaining her core characteristics.

Star Trek: Voyager 's Executive Producer Brannon Braga explained his real inspiration behind the episode where Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) becomes Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from Alien . Although both Voyager and Alien are science fiction, there are a lot of differences between the Star Trek and Alien franchises. While Alien focuses on blending horror and suspense with its sci-fi elements, Star Trek almost always takes a more optimistic approach to the future. However, there are occasionally Star Trek episodes that take on more of a horror twist .

One such episode was Voyager season 3, episode 12, "Macrocosm," where an alien virus managed to take over the USS Voyager, mutating to grow at least a meter in length and then proceeding to make Voyager 's cast of characters very sick. As the lone un-infected, Captain Janeway was forced to mount a guerrilla attack on the viruses while the Doctor (Robert Picardo) worked on finding a cure. Along with similar premises, "Macrocosm" seemed to take a lot of influence from Alien , especially in how it portrayed Janeway as its heroine.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star trek: voyager’s janeway “alien” episode explained by executive producer, braga's intention wasn't actually to copy alien.

Despite Janeway's crusade against the viruses in "Macrocosm" often being compared to Ellen Ripley, Brannon Braga, who wrote the episode's story, claimed it wasn't his intention to create a tribute to Alien . In an interview with Cinefantastique around the time of the episode's release, Braga stated that "Macrocosm" actually rose out of a desire to do a solo character story with very little dialogue , and implied that any comparisons between Janeway and Ripley were completely unintentional. Read Braga's full quote below:

"Sometimes Star Trek can be a little high-and-mighty, talky, moralistic. Sometimes it's just time to have fun. The intention actually began, on my part, to do an episode with no dialogue. I wanted to just do a purely cinematic episode with Janeway and a bunch of weird creatures, these macroviruses, viruses as life-sized creatures. Unfortunately it was impossible to do, and I ended up having to put a couple of acts of dialogue in. I just wanted to do something that felt and looked and smelled differently than most shows. It was not an attempt to make Janeway look like Ripley."

Despite Braga's protestations, it is hard not to see the numerous similarities between Janeway and Sigourney Weaver's iconic Alien role in "Macrocosm." Stripped down to her uniform's undershirt and equipped with a large phaser rifle for defense, Janeway embodied the recognizable sci-fi "final girl" aesthetic popularized by Weaver's portrayal of Ripley in the first Alien film from 1979 . Given what a recognizable character Ripley is thanks to Alien 's popularity, it's no wonder that "Macrocosm" became such a memorable episode of Voyager after it aired.

Why Captain Janeway’s “Ripley” Moments In Star Trek: Voyager Are Still So Popular

"macrocosm's" version of janeway is still extremely well-liked.

Despite not being one of Voyager 's most popular episodes, Janeway's "Ripley" scenes in "Macrocosm" left an indelible mark on the series. This is likely due to what a departure Janeway's actions and aesthetic were from how she was usually portrayed on Voyager . "Macrocosm" allowed Janeway to be a true action hero , showing that she was able to handle more than just the scientific and diplomatic aspects of being a Captain.

However, Janeway never lost what made her such a popular character in the first place, including her stubborn determination and fierce loyalty to her crew. Her nearly single-handed defeat of the macrovirus perfectly demonstrated how far she was willing to go to make sure everyone under her protection was safe. The macrovirus itself also likely contributed to the episode's popularity , and demonstrated its longevity when it was brought back as part of Star Trek: Lower Decks ' tribute episode to Voyager , "Two-vix." Lower Decks helped remind audiences just how iconic "Macrocosm" was for Star Trek: Voyager season 3.

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Alien (1979)

Alien is a sci-fi horror-thriller by director Ridley Scott that follows the crew of a spaceship known as the Nostromo. After the staff of the merchant's vessel perceives an unknown transmission as a distress call, its landing on the source moon finds one of the crew members attacked by a mysterious lifeform, and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun.

Star Trek: Discovery Just Brought A Legendary Original Series Episode Back Into The Mix

Star Trek: Discovery

Let's fly ... away from spoilers . Read no further if you haven't watched the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the strangest of them all? In "Star Trek," that title goes to one of the zaniest concepts ever introduced into the canon: The Mirror Universe. The idea of our alternate selves living completely different lives somewhere out there is no longer the sole domain of perhaps the nerdiest franchise in all of sci-fi (although shows like "For All Mankind," "Foundation," and "3 Body Problem" are creating some stiff competition), the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the best episode of "Community" ever made . Fans might be surprised to find out that many in the scientific community believe the theory is worth discussion these days . But "Trek" put its own unmistakable fingerprints on the multiverse by emphasizing one in particular that stands at odds with the usual Prime Universe — one that poses a fundamentally moral dilemma between the paragons of Starfleet we know and love, and the absolute worst versions of themselves.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that "Star Trek: Discovery" would use its final season to travel full circle and return to the Mirror Universe that played such a significant role back in season 1 (even if, ironically, there might be a parallel universe out there where we were able to see  former showrunner Bryan Fuller's more complex and nuanced take on it ). But what's sure to shock and delight longtime fans in episode 5, aptly titled "Mirrors," is a deep-cut reference to arguably one of the most influential hours of "Trek" ever made, and the one that introduced the Mirror Universe in the first place.

A different kind of black mirror

There might not be any sinister goatees or chest-baring V-necks in sight throughout this episode of "Discovery," but the lasting effects of "The Original Series" episode "Mirror, Mirror" are plain to see. Upon entering the wormhole that took scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) into multidimensional space, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) discover the wrecked remains of their ship ... alongside the still-functioning husk of a familiar-looking Starfleet vessel, emblazoned with the name, "ISS Enterprise." For those who haven't brushed up on their 1967 "Trek" lore (and, quite frankly, shame on you if that's the case), Burnham helpfully points out that this isn't exactly the same starship captained by the fabled James T. Kirk thousands of years ago. It's one that has somehow found its way from the depths of the Mirror Universe (the exact specifics are oddly brushed aside) and remained stranded ever since.

But then "Discovery" goes a step further and hearkens back to "Mirror, Mirror" more thematically. While exploring the derelict ship, Burnham and Book stumble upon information about the previous occupants of the ISS Enterprise and specifically that of a certain Kelpian who rose from a slave to a leader in his own right. That, of course, refers to none other than the Mirror version of Saru (Doug Jones) seen in season 3, whom Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) saved from certain death and pointed towards his proper path. Where the ending of "Mirror, Mirror" suggests that Mirror Spock is still "a man of integrity" despite the ruthlessness of the Empire he serves, "Discovery" reconfirms that even the comically rampant evil of the Mirror Universe is no match for the stubborn idealism of "Trek."

New episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" stream on Paramount+ every Thursday.
