The Stockholm Pass is a product of the company Go City. With this pass you can use more than 40 tourist offers. This City Pass is a real all-inclusive package!

City tours & boat trips

That's not all. The All Inclusive Pass from Go City includes some interesting tourist offers that allow you to explore Stockholm quite comfortably:

A central part of the Stockholm Pass is Strømma's hop-on/hop-off buses and boats, which can be used for the entire duration of the pass (up to five days). The Stockholm Pass is only worthwhile if you take advantage of this offer. However, there are some aspects you should keep in mind.

There are two different operators for hop-on hop-off services in Stockholm. The Stockholm Card gives you access to Strømma's light green vehicles. Strømma also co-operates with City Sightseeing, which means that you can also use their red buses.

However, it is important to note that Red Sightseeing's red buses and boats are not included in the pass, which can cause some confusion at first.

What the Stockholm Pass does not include

The Stockholm Pass includes many museums and boat trips. Nevertheless, there are also some services that are missing from the Stockholm Pass. The ABBA Museum and Gröna Lund amusement park in particular would be a useful addition.

The following offers are not included in the Stockholm City Pass:

• ABBA Museum
• Public transport
• Stockholm City Hall
• Guided city walks

Until a few years ago, public transport was included in the Stockholm Card, but this is no longer the case. Public transport cannot be used with the Stockholm Pass.

Reservations with the Stockholm Pass

Basically, you can simply go to the participating sights in Stockholm and present your digital Stockholm Pass. The QR code on it will be scanned. You will then receive your ticket. Normally it is not necessary, nor feasible, to make reservations.

However, boat trips are an exception. For this, it is necessary to reserve a ticket at one of the Strømma kiosks. There have been complaints from some visitors about long queues at the kiosks and sold-out tours. Therefore, we recommend securing tickets as early as possible. The kiosks start their operation at 10 am. Especially in the high summer months, it can already be very busy at this time.

It is unfortunate, but in the summer season it can happen that some boat tours are already sold out for the day. This is because guests without a Stockholm Card can purchase their tickets online in advance. In such a situation, it is necessary to be flexible and switch to another boat trip if necessary.

Another factor that complicates this situation is the fact that pass holders can only ever book for the current day. So if you want to take a boat trip every day, you have to queue at the Strømma kiosk every morning. We believe that this somewhat cumbersome procedure is the biggest disadvantage of the Stockholm Passes.

An important piece of advice when booking: Go City offers a digital handbook. This consists of a detailed PDF file with information on all participating attractions. In this handbook you can find out which attractions require a reservation and how to make one. You will receive this digital handbook after purchasing the pass. You can also find the same information in the Go City app.

There is a lot to be said for the Stockholm All Inclusive Pass if you want to visit many sights and take advantage of several tourist offers. But is it also worth it financially?

What does the Stockholm Pass cost?

The price of the Stockholm Pass depends on the length of validity. The longer the All Inclusive Pass is valid, the more you have to pay for it. However, the price-performance ratio improves with increasing validity.

• 1 day: SEK 999
• 2 days: SEK 1.349 = SEK 675 per day
• 3 days: SEK 1.629
• 4 days: SEK 1.929
• 5 days: SEK 2.089 = SEK 418 per day

There is a reduced Stockholm Pass for children from 6 to 15 years.

Tip: These regular prices apply on the official Go City website, but not always. The company regularly runs price promotions, so you can benefit from discounted prices every now and then. Check here the current daily price.

Example calculation for 3 days

In general, the longer the Stockholm Pass is valid, the more it is worthwhile. The most popular variant is the one with a validity period of three days. With each additional day, the product becomes only slightly more expensive. Using the example of the 3-day pass, we would like to show how much money you can save.

With the Stockholm All Inclusive Pass, significant savings are possible if you use two to three services each day and also travel on the hop-on/hop-off buses and hop-on/hop-off boats.

Conclusion: High savings are possible if the All Inclusive Pass is valid for at least three days and you use several expensive services every day.

The Stockholm Pass is a product of the Go City company. You can get the passport on the official website .

Arguments against the Stockholm Pass

The All Inclusive Pass from Go City is a very good product. Nevertheless, there are also arguments against the Stockholm Pass:

No quick entry: With the Stockholm Pass you do not enjoy fast track access for quick entry. You always have to queue at the box office to get your free ticket.

Queuing at the Strømma kiosk: To take part in the boat trips, you must queue at a Strømma kiosk every morning. Only there will you get your ticket. Unfortunately, you can only reserve the dates for the same day.

Only worth it if you do a lot of sightseeing:  This product is only suitable if you are prepared to do a lot of sightseeing within a few days and use the expensive services. Then again, high savings are possible.

No public transport: Unfortunately, you cannot use Stockholm's public transport with this pass.

Short opening hours: Many museums, attractions and boat trips can only be used during the day. Opening hours are often restricted to 10 am to around 4 pm.

Conclusion: For whom is the Stockholm Pass suitable?

Under the following circumstances, the All Inclusive Pass may be suitable for your trip to Stockholm:

• You want to visit some of Stockholm's best museums. The pass gives free access to Vasa Museum, Viking Museum, Skansen, Fotografiska and Nobel Prize Museum, among others.
• You would like to use the hop-on/hop-off buses and boats for several days.
• You want to make several boat trips in the Stockholm area. The large number of boat trips is the most important advantage of the Stockholm Pass.

What is the Stockholm Pass?

You can choose from over 50 attractions , including the famous Stockholm Castle, a trip on the hop-on hop-off bus or the Vasa Museum. You can decide which one you want to visit spontaneously – and not at the time of purchase. This gives you flexibility on the spot!

You can download the pass to your smartphone and use it in the app – no hassle of picking it up on site . After purchasing, you can start sightseeing straight away.

How does the Stockholm Pass work?

• Activation & validity: After purchase, you can simply download the pass to your smartphone and then have direct access to many attractions in Stockholm. The pass is activated the first time you use it and is then valid for your chosen period.

There is a discount for children and young people under the age of 16.  Check the Go City website for current prices . Children under the age of 6 do not need a pass, they have free entry to most attractions anyway.

Which attractions are included in the Stockholm Pass?

The Stockholm Pass gives you access to many of the city’s favourite attractions. Some of the main attractions are:

Hop-on hop-off buses and boats

In Stockholm, you can use the hop-on hop-off buses and even boats operated by Strømma free of charge with the pass . And for the entire period of validity! The operator’s buses are green, but you can also use the red buses operated by City Sightseeing. But beware: you cannot use the Red Sightseeing buses, which are also red. So always look carefully.

• The hop-on hop-off boats only run from June to the beginning of September.
• The last round trip of the buses usually starts at around 4 pm in the high season. Unfortunately, there are far fewer trips out of season.
• Many boat trips or water-related activities are only available again in summer.
• In general, the offer can change from time to time. You should therefore check the list of attractions  before purchasing and make sure that your desired attractions are included.
• Some attractions require a reservation with a free timed ticket . Check the reservation page to see which ones these are so that you can book them in advance. However, this is actually only necessary for very few attractions.
• The boat tours must be booked at the Strømma kiosk. Be prepared for longer waiting times or arrive as early as possible.

How long is the pass valid for?

You have 2 years after purchase to redeem your pass. From the first time you use it, it is valid for the period of your choice (1-5 days).

My tip: The validity starts in the morning. So if you use your pass for the first time in the afternoon, you have lost the morning. So always start sightseeing in the morning so that you can make full use of the pass.

The Stockholm Pass can be worthwhile if you plan to visit a lot of sights in a short space of time. Let’s take a look at how much you could save with a pass for 3 days:

When is the pass not worth it?

• Short stay: The 1-day option is quite expensive. You have to pack your day very full to make the pass worthwhile. You also have to bear in mind that the days in Stockholm are shorter than ours and many sights are therefore only open until 4 pm. The longer the validity of the pass, the cheaper the average price per day.
• Low season: Only in the months of July and August are all the attractions on the pass actually available. If you are in Stockholm in the low season or even in winter, you should check carefully whether the pass is worthwhile for you. The price remains the same, but there are fewer attractions to choose from.
• No hop-on hop-off buses or boats: If you don’t use the hop-on hop-off buses and/or boats, you should carefully calculate whether the pass is worthwhile for you, as they offer the greatest savings.

What I like

• Large selection of attractions: The pass offers a wide range of attractions. The boat trips and the hop-on hop-off bus are particularly popular.
• Easy to use: Not only can you save your ticket in the app, but it also provides you with lots of helpful information and a handbook. It’s best to skim through this before you go sightseeing, as it will save you some of the problems that other customers have with the pass.
• Hop-on hop-off buses and boats: In Stockholm, there are not only the popular sightseeing buses, but also boats. The cool thing is that you can use them for the entire validity period of your pass. In other cities, this is usually only possible for 24 hours.

What I don’t like

• Some attractions are missing: Stockholm City Hall and the popular ABBA Museum are missing from the pass ( here you can buy the ABBA museum tickets separately ).
• Less availability in winter: Some great attractions are not available in winter, such as the Stockholm Canal Tour or a boat trip to Skokloster Castle. The hop-on hop-off bus also runs much less frequently.
• Consecutive calendar days: If you choose a pass for several days, you have to redeem them one after the other. This sometimes means a tight sightseeing programme.
• No public transport: The pass does not include public transport.

If you want to do a lot of sightseeing in Stockholm, then the Stockholm Pass is just the thing for you. However, you will have to visit a few museums and should also take the hop-on hop-off boats.

Alternatives to the Stockholm Pass

The Stockholm Pass is currently the only City Card for the Swedish capital. If it doesn’t suit you or isn’t worthwhile for you, you can alternatively buy individual tickets for the attractions that interest you.

Attractions and Sights Included in Your Go City Stockholm Pass

By the way, since 2020 visits to Stockholm’s City Hall and Gröna Lund are NOT included.

Another interesting thing for you who love being on the water is all the great boat sightseeing tours offered which were not covered by the previous Stockholm card. Among them you’ll find the successful “Stockholm Under the Bridges” or “Round tour in Djurgården” which will take you around the greenest oasis-island in the capital of Sweden. Make sure to come back and stroll along the island best natural sights like Rosendalsträdgård (an amazing ecofriendly hub which is a garden, a park and a cafeteria in the best Swedish design).

You will also be able to find extended tours to the island of Birka, the Viking capital island, or Vaxholm and to other destinations in the outskirts of Stockholm like Sigtuna – once Swedish capital city and one of the oldest cities in Sweden – and the Palace of Skokloster where this summer you’d be able to visit an exhibition about Jane Austen. You can buy it for 1,2,3 or 5 consecutive days (yes, you can visit at least 10 different attractions in Stockholm in 24 hours ) for adults or children. Prices for the Go City Stockholm Pass are the following for 1, 2, 3 and 5 days:

• Adult prices: 669, 989, 1209, 1569 SEK (68€ – 150€ / $75 – $170 / £55 – £125)
• Child prices (6 to 15 years): 279, 389, 479, 629 SEK (28€ – 60€ / $30 – $68 / £22 – £50)

Currently there are NO Go City Stockholm Pass which include public transportation .

Where to Buy the Stockholm City Card and Get a Discount

The fastest and cheapest option to get your Stockholm card and the one I recommend is buying it at the official website where you can get discounts up to 15% . Remember that cards are valid during 12 months after the purchase.

As the physical Stockholm Pass no longer exists you will get an email with a QR code for your mobile phone upon purchase.

Although at first the price may not seem cheap you should bear in mind what visiting every attraction would cost you without the card. That’s why I think the Go City Stockholm Pass is worth its money to get the best experience possible when discovering the fascinating city of Stockholm.

Pro-tip: buy your public transportation card upon your landing at Arlanda and use the cheapest way of traveling between Arlanda airport and Stockholm center to get to the city center.

A 2-day card with public transportation is a great way to discover the city. If it is your first visit to Stockholm I strongly advise you to buy it and check Skansen, Vasa Museum, Vikingaliv, Spritmuseum, Fotografiska, Nobel Museum among others.

Stockholm is an expensive city so many visitors turn to the Stockholm Pass as a way to save some money. Luckily, for many travelers, this sightseeing pass is a good value if you want to see most of the city’s highlights — but in some cases, it might not be a great value. So keep reading our Stockholm Pass review to see if this city pass is right for your travel style.

Stockholm Pass Variations

The Stockholm Pass comes in four variations — 1,2,3, and 5 days. You can also add an unlimited travel card to your city pass — but it’s the same price as buying a normal unlimited travel pass so it just adds a bit of a convenience factor.

Public Transportation Prices:

A single ticket on Stockholm’s public transit (which includes buses, underground trains, commuter trains, trams, and certain ferry lines) is 45 SEK. An unlimited 24-hour pass is 130 SEK and a 72-hour pass is 260 SEK. Therefore, the pass is worth the price if you take about three rides per day.

Stockholm Pass Highlights

In order to figure out if the Stockholm Pass is a good value, we need to look at what it covers. Luckily, the pass covers just about every big-name attraction (and a bunch of other stuff you probably won’t visit). The ABBA Museum is the main attraction that’s not included.

Is The Stockholm Pass Worth It?

The first step to evaluating the value of the Stockholm Pass is breaking down the per-day price.

• 2-Day Pass: 929 SEK (465 SEK/day)
• 3-Day Pass: 1129 SEK (377 SEK/day)
• 5-Day Pass: 1479 SEK (296 SEK/day)

So now you know how much you need to spend each day on individual activities to make the pass worth the price.

So let’s look at the one-day pass that’s 669 SEK. It’s kind of hard to get a lot of value out of this unless you do one of the expensive attractions like Drottningholm Palace & Boat Tour (340 SEK) or Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus and Boat (450 SEK) and then add two other sights. You could try to do a lot of cheaper attractions but that would be a full day since most things are 140-160 SEK.

For a two-day pass you need to spend 465 SEK/day — which is a little easier. This works out to one expensive + one less expensive attraction or three key attractions.

The three-day pass is 377 SEK/day — which is essentially two things a day. A few of the attractions on the list cost more than 350 SEK so just doing one of those in a day already saves you money.

The five-day pass is 296 SEK/day — this still works out to about two attractions a day. It’s pretty easy to hit this mark and it’s super easy when you throw in a few of the expensive attractions that cost over 269 SEK.

In general, the Stockholm Pass is worth the price for a lot of travelers. It’s especially worth the price if you want to do the expensive attractions — mainly the tours. And you might end up doing a few cool things you might have otherwise skipped. Plus, you get the skip the ticket line at many of the attractions so that is a nice bonus.

That said, if you only want to see one or two things a day then it’s most likely better to skip the pass. This is especially true if you want to visit the cheaper sights since those are usually around 100-150 SEK.

Tips For Getting The Most Out Of The Stockholm Pass

Get a shorter pass if you’re on a budget.

If you want to see a lot of the sights on the Stockholm Pass, you can arrange your visit so that you see all the major/expensive sites on the pass in a day or two.

Get Up Early

Be sure to check the hours of the sights to see when they close. We recommend getting started early and hitting the sights when they open. If you don’t get started until noon then you might only have a few hours to squeeze everything in before things start closing. Plus, getting started early will help you beat the crowds.

Group Your Sightseeing

Get a map and plot out where things are so you can group your sightseeing by location. Don’t waste your time traveling from one side of the city to the other if you don’t have to.

Download The App

The app goes a nice job of helping you plan where to visit. It also has a handy map feature so you can plan your route easier if you’re not familiar with the city. It’s also handy for seeing things spur of the moment as you’re walking around.

Night Activities

Since most museums and sights are only open during the day, you should see what activities are open later and do those after the other attractions are closed.

Don’t Waste the First Day

The time on the pass starts the first day you use it, so if you use your pass for the first time at 8 pm, it will count as a full day.

An important part of the Stockholm Card are the hop-on hop-off buses and boats as well as the numerous boat tours in and around Stockholm. The following services are included in the Stockholm Card

• Hop-on hop-off boat from Strømma for the entire period of validity of the Stockholm Card (1 - 5 days)
• Boat trip under the bridges of Stockholm

• Stockholm winter boat tour (only in winter)
• ... and a few more

Please note that most boat tours are only offered in summer. Some boat trips start as early as April and run until October. Other boats only operate from June to August. In winter, however, a special winter boat tour is offered. On the official website of Go City you will find the operating times of all boat tours ( Show attractions & boat tours ).

Most boat tours also need to be booked. You can find more information on this in the next section.

With the Stockholm Pass, visitors can easily visit Stockholm's sights by simply showing the QR code in the Go City app to get tickets.

Reservations are not usually required, except for boat trips, for which tickets must be purchased in advance at the Strømma kiosks. There are often long queues at these kiosks and the tours can be sold out, especially in summer. Stockholm Card holders can only book tickets for the day, which is a disadvantage of the tourist card.

A digital city guide and the Go City app are available for information on sights and reservations.

It is easier to book the Stockholm Pass than to buy individual tickets for all the attractions. This alone makes the City Card worthwhile.

It is also suitable under the following conditions:

• You would like to use Stockholm's hop-on hop-off buses on several days.
• You would like to take part in several boat tours.
• You want to visit some of Stockholm's best museums.
• You would like to use several Stockholm Card services every day.
• You want to have finalised your planning before your trip to Stockholm.
• You would like to receive all tickets in a digital app.
• You want to save some money when sightseeing.

Conclusion: The Stockholm Card should be worthwhile for many travellers who are interested in the city's top museums and want to book their tickets easily.

The Stockholm Pass is a very good product that is suitable for many travellers. But the card also has some disadvantages that we don't want to conceal:

• Booking boat trips is inconvenient, as you have to queue at the kiosk in Strømma every morning to book the boat trip you want. It can happen that some tours are already fully booked.
• The opening hours of many museums and attractions are relatively short. Museums and other attractions often close in the afternoon at around 4 pm. That doesn't leave much time for sightseeing.
• The Stockholm Card does not offer fast track access. You must queue at the ticket office at each attraction to receive your free admission ticket. There may therefore be waiting times at some attractions.
• Many boat trips and some attractions are not available in winter. The Stockholm Card can only be used in full in summer.
• Public transport cannot be used with the Stockholm Card.

Stockholm Public Transport – how to get around town

The Stockholm Public Transport System is efficient and covers most parts of town. Even if this is a perfect city to explore by foot it can be nice to gain some extra time by using the public transport every once in a while. [Updated 10-06-2023]

The Swedish capital has a very well-organized transport system and you can choose between taking the subway, the light railway, commuter trains, buses or navigate the city by boat.

The bus-and rail transport is operated by SL . Below is our Stockholm public transport guide.

Stockholm subway – 3 main lines

The easiest way to get around is to use the subway. The Stockholm city subway provides 3 main lines – the green, the red and the blue line serving approximately 100 stations with T-centralen (Central Station) being the transport hub. Stockholm subway runs daily from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.

A really nice thing to note about the subway in Stockholm is all the art that embellishes the stations.

About 90 of the 100 stations are filled with murals, sculptures, ceramic and mosaic. Stockholms subway is sometimes called “the worlds largest art gallery”.

There are also four light rail lines called Tvärbanan , Nockebybanan , Djurgårdslinjen (Spårväg City) and Lidingöbanan .

Tram no.7 reaches Djurgården and connects you to many of the most well-known museums and attractions in only 10 minutes. A perfect way to discover the city as well.

Buses in Stockholm

If you prefer taking a bus instead, there are many lines operating in and around Stockholm. Stockholm city bus lines use Slussen as a transport hub which is close to Gamla Stan (Old Town).

Moreover, the disabled are sure to enjoy a nice ride as well whether they go by subway, by bus, or by tram. If you have a stroller you also get to ride for free.

There are four main bus lines in Stockholm:

• Inner-city blue buses
• Inner-city red buses (operate less frequently)
• Suburban blue buses
• Service buses for elderly people

Commuter trains

You can either take the commuter trains if you want to have a look around and go further outside the city area, or you can catch a national train to visit another city. The commuter services and the national rail both connect at T-centralen (Central Station).

Boat lines in and outside town

Several boat lines are operating from Nybrokajen and allow you to explore the archipelago. If you fancy a boat trip “within” the city, you can take the Djurgården ferry from Slussen. Main boat lines are:

• Waxholmsbolaget
• Cinderellabåtarna

Stockholm Public Transport – tickets and travel cards

Buying tickets is easy! Just tap your contactless credit card, or mobile device, to pay. It works on the automatic barriers in the metro, on buses, and on card readers on the tram and light railway, as well as on the commuter train stations.

Please note that there's no need to touch out after your journey.

A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes and you can use it for multiple journeys during that time.

If you do not manage to show a valid ticket or travel card you may have to pay a penalty fee of 1500 SEK.

However, if you will be using public transport for a couple of days during your stay in Stockholm, the best and the cheapest way to get around is to use a prepaid travel card.

There are cards for 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days and even longer. For tourists these are the most likely ones to be used.

Stockholm Go City Pass: is it worth buying in 2024?

If you’re planning a trip to Stockholm, you might have already seen adverts for the Stockholm Pass – also known as the Go City All-Inclusive Pass.

It’s an all-in-one discount pass that guarantees you free entry to dozens of attractions across the Swedish capital, and has a few organised boat and bus tours thrown in for good measure.

According to the official website, buying the Stockholm Pass could save you more than 737 SEK (around US $ 70 ) on a three-day visit. But is it really worth buying?

And will it actually save you a big wad of kronor (Swedish currency) when you’re trying to see Stockholm’s best bits? Read our review to find out!

Wait up! What is the Stockholm Pass?

The  Stockholm Pass  is a pass that allows you free admission to loads of Stockholm’s sights and attractions. The pass is available on an app that you download onto your phone. 

You then show it at one of the participating attractions in Stockholm – or at the start point of one of the included city tours – and you’ll be waved through with the rest of the paying visitors.

Once you scan the Stockholm Pass at the first attraction, the time remaining on your pass starts running down automatically.

And the good news is that once it’s on the app, you don’t need internet to access, so you won’t have to use any pricey roaming data.

What’s included with the pass?

The Stockholm Pass includes free admission to some of the city’s top attractions . This gives you a good opportunity to cram in lots of sightseeing without worrying about what it costs to get into each attraction.

As well as boat trips and sights, the pass includes kayak rental, a free sandwich at a café in the trendy Södermalm district and a trip in a SkyView glass dome that takes you over the top of the Avicii Arena for great views across Stockholm.

Does the Stockholm Pass include public transport?

Public transport isn’t included in the pass, but the hop-on, hop-off bus tour that runs round the centre of the city past most of the major sights is. 

And a hop-on, hop-off boat tour that takes in some of the city’s sights from the water is also included.

Because you can get on and off when and where you like, they’re both good ways to see most of the city’s main sights.

How much does the Stockholm Pass cost?

There are several different versions of the pass, with validity periods of between one and five days. Passes are available on the Stockholm Pass website .

We’ve given the full prices below, but the website often runs special offers, with discounts of around ten percent. So you can often get the pass even cheaper, especially in low season.

Where can I buy the Stockholm Pass?

You can  buy the pass online  and then use it via the Go City app. Download the app, then the pass will show up on it.

But it won’t be activated until you scan in at your first attraction, so you can buy it any time in advance.

Is there a maximum amount of stuff I can see with the Stockholm Pass? 

Each pass has a maximum value that you can’t exceed, based on the individual attraction’s general admission fee. So if you go over the limit you won’t be able to use the pass.

However, the maximum limits are generous, so it’s very unlikely that you will exceed this amount. 

We picked a pretty active three-day itinerary below, and the general admission cost came to 2288. The maximum limit for a three-day pass is 6135 SEK, which is more than double the cost of our itinerary.

So you would have to be incredibly busy to get anywhere near the limit!

What’s new for 2024? 

Each year new attractions are added to the Stockholm Pass and a few are dropped.

This year, kayak and SUP rental have been added, so you can paddle around the city’s waterways at your own pace.

They have also included entrance to the fascinating Museum of Wrecks , which tells the story of the shipwrecks the lie beneath the Baltic Sea.

And we really like that there are a few free food and drink attractions, that are new for 2024 too. 

You can get a fun free drink in the Stockholm Icebar , and sample some traditional Swedish fika – coffee and a cinnamon bun at a cute café in the centre of the city.

Some of the other newer attractions include The Museum of Spirits , where you can learn all about Swedish vodka and visit the Absolut Art Collection. 

Or you can go on a self-guided Murder Mystery walking tour , where you follow clues around the Old Town’s cobbled streets and catch a murderer!

Admission to Drottningholm Palace and the Royal Palace are now included with the pass, as of 2024. Both can also be seen from the outside on boat trips that are included in the pass.

Top tips for getting the very most out of the Stockholm Pass. 

• Check the website for discounts. The pass is sold at a discount at various points throughout the year – often in spring and autumn. So check the website and buy the pass when it’s on sale, as you have up to two years after purchase to use it.
• Make an itinerary. If you’re on a short trip, you’ll want to cram in as much as possible, so plan a logical route round all the sights you want to visit.
• Check opening hours and closing days in advance. Some sights are closed one day a week, while others stay open late on certain evenings, so check websites and plan accordingly.
• Prioritise! Don’t go mad and try and fit everything in. Do your research, choose which places are top of your list and visit them first, in case you run out of time.
• Take advantage of the food and drink offers. The card includes coffee and a bun, a drink and sandwich, plus a drink at the Icebar, so factor these into your meal times.
• Use the evenings. In summer, Stockholm stays light late, so plan an evening kayak trip or boat trip.

So is it really worth buying?

Yes, the Stockholm Pass is worth buying, especially if you are visiting for the first time and want to see as much as possible.

If you have a few museums, galleries and attractions on your radar then the Stockholm Pass is definitely worth buying ( get it here ) and could save you money.

Armed with a pass, you can also avoid queuing for tickets at each attraction.

On the other hand, if you only want to check out a couple of Stockholm’s big attractions, you won’t save much with the Stockholm Pass.

If you’re planning to spend most of your time wandering around, eating, drinking, shopping, chilling at the parks and beaches, and generally getting a feel for the city, then we don’t think the Stockholm Pass will be worth it.

It’s work noting, too, that not all Stockholm’s big attractions are included with the Stockholm Pass. 

At the  Abba Museum , for example, you’ll still have to pay the usual 269 SEK entry fee, or you can skip the queues and buy a  fast-track admission ticket here . 

So, we definitely recommend taking a look at the sample itinerary below and thinking about what you want to see and do in Stockholm.  

Then you can make an informed decision on whether you could save money by buying the Stockholm Pass.

Three days in Stockholm: would you save cash?

We’ve added some of the real must-see attractions that are included with the pass, such as the Vasa Museet and Skansen, along with a couple of smaller fun sights and tours.

If you visited these attractions during a three-day stay you would spend 2288 SEK in total.

So in this example, buying the Stockholm Pass saves you a whopping 709 SEK, and it also gives you the flexibility to add in more attractions if you get time.

But of course, results will vary depending on exactly what you want to see.

The Stockholm Pass: is it worth it?

Is the Stockholm Pass actually worth buying? Yes. If you’re planning to do a lot of sightseeing, plus a few fun tours and activities, you could save a lot of cash by getting the Stockholm Pass.

The best advice we can give is to work out exactly what you want to see and then add up the totals, just like we did above.

If you’re doing a fair bit of museum hopping and want to check out big must-see attractions like the Vasa Museum, you’ll probably find that it’s much cheaper to buy the Stockholm Pass rather than going it alone.

Our take on the Stockholm Pass

We’ve been updating this post since 2016, and will continue to do so.

We’re aware that buying an all-inclusive pass in advance is a big outlay, and not everyone wants to spend their trip cramming in the sights. 

But we also know that money can run away with you when you’re on holiday, and there’s a huge sense of liberation when you’ve bought and paid for all your entertainment in advance.

Can you get a 7-day version of the Stockholm Pass?

The Stockholm Pass comes in one-, two-, three-, four- and five-day versions. If you want the pass for a full week, you can always buy a five- and a two-day version.

What’s the difference between the Stockholm Card and Stockholm Pass?

The short answer is nothing! They are the same thing. The Stockholm Card is the old name for the Go City Stockholm Pass.

What is the Explorer Pass?

There’s also an alternative type of pass available called the Explorer Pass. 

This is for people who are on a longer trip and don’t want cram all their sight sightseeing into a few days.

You can choose how many attractions you want to visit – though you don’t have to decide which specific ones when you buy –  and the pass is then valid for 60 days after you visit the first sight. 

You simply download it onto the app, as with the regular all-inclusive pass.

Is Drottningholm Palace included in the Stockholm Pass?

Yes, admission to Drottningholm Palace is included, as is entrance to the Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm Palace plus a guided tour of the Drottningholm Court Theatre.

The boat trip to the palace along Lake Mälaren is also free with the Stockholm Pass.

Is Moderna Museet included in the Stockholm Pass?

No, the admission fee for Moderna Museet’s permanent collection is 150 SEK, though entrance is free for everyone on Fridays from 6–8pm.

Is the Stockholm Pass refundable? 

What if my plans change? Can I get my money back once I’ve bought the pass? Provided you haven’t activated your pass, you can get a full refund up to 90 days after the date you purchased the pass.

Can I visit the same attraction more than once?

No, once you’ve scanned your pass at an attraction, you can’t revisit it.

As a side-note for any students reading this: I just calculated the prices for everything and it’s definitely not worth buying a Stockholm pass if you have a student ID card, unless you plan to do that whole list in one day. We were thinking of maybe getting a two day pass as we’re not planning on rushing about in one day to do everything, but its 200 SEK cheaper not to when you take the student discounts into consideration. 🙂

Is it possible to cover all the places in 1 day?

I am thinking of buying the pass for the one day when my cruise stops at the port. I see that it is discounted online if I buy today- but is the pick up location walking distance from the cruise terminal? Looks like all the collection places would be 20min away…

Just a small update. I bought a single day city pass 2 days ago and thought it was worth it. The going cost right now is 535SEK and that price includes a 24 hour pass for the city metro which by itself costs 120SEK. So for 415SEK, I was able to see the Vasa Museum and go for Vaxholm tour and museum plus skyview the next morning. Paid for itself.

My wife and I just returned from a nine-day trip to Stockholm in July 2016. We bought a five-day (actually 120-hour) Stockholm Pass. My verdict is that the Pass was well worth it for us, but bear in mind the following: – The one-day or two-day pass is almost certainly not worth it unless you plan to have a really, really busy day. If you are planning to visit Stockholm , one of Europe's most atmospheric and culturally rich capitals, you will probably find yourself considering purchasing the Stockholm Pass . The city has much to offer from a tourist standpoint, and the pass content to visit many attractions while generally maintaining some savings.

But is it really worth it for your vacation? In this article you can learn in detail about how the Stockholm Pass works , the attractions included in the package, and the benefits it offers, so that together you can understand whether or not it may be a good solution for your vacation.

What is the Stockholm Pass?

How does it work, stockholm card and transportation, attraction reservations and skip the line, pass values, stockholm pass: is it worth it, where to buy stockholm pass, validity and refunds.

The Stockholm Pass is the classic "all inclusive" tourist card for visiting the city, with a list of attractions and tours included in the price, which can be visited in a set number of days , from 1 to 5.

Museums, historic buildings, guided tours, boat trips: there are many things to do and see in Stockholm. If you plan to enjoy to the fullest what the Swedish capital has to offer , buying this pass could save you quite a bit. Indeed, with the logic of "it's already paid for anyway," those who buy the pass often visit even more things than planned in their itinerary, saving even more money and allowing them to expand their knowledge about Nordic culture and explore Sweden's beautiful landscapes.

Currently the choice of which pass or card to make for Stockholm is very simple: there is only one tourist pass , the all-inclusive (or all-inclusive) Stockholm Pass from Go City .

Below you can understand in detail how it works and, most importantly, whether it really pays off for your vacation in the Swedish capital.

Please note - Inquiring online about passes to Stockholm, you may have found references to the Stockholm Pass. The name is identical, translated into English it is still Stockholm Pass, but the Stockholm Pass, offered by the company Strömma, no longer exists . Go City took over its ownership and reformulated the offer by proposing the pass you find described on this page. However, the operation has remained very similar. The most important change is that public transportation is no longer included, replaced however by the possibility of using the hop-on hop-off bus.

The operation of Go City's Stockholm Pass is very simple.

The card includes a long list of museums, attractions, tours, which can be visited in a set time frame . It is available for varying durations of 1, 2, 3, or 5 days , to which a maximum cash limit is added. The price obviously changes depending on the option you choose, and the maximum amounts available also change. I then explain in detail how the pricing works.

The Stockholm Pass consists of a QR Code , which you can use directly from a smartphone by installing the appropriate app, or you can print it out on paper.

The pass is activated the first time you use it in the city to visit a museum or participate in a tour. From that moment on, the days of validity start, within which you can see all the attractions included, within the limits of the caps provided.

Simply show the QR Code at the entrance to enter, or, where required, drop by the ticket office to convert the pass into a ticket (for boat tours, for example).

What the Stockholm Pass includes

The Stockholm Pass includes admissions to some of Stockholm's most important attractions and museums . A variety of boat tours, sightseeing tours, and the ability to use the boat and hop-on hop-off bus are also offered for the duration of the pass .

• The Vasa Museum , which houses a perfectly preserved galleon from 1628
• The Viking Museum , a true institution for the study of this civilization
• The Nobel Museum, entirely dedicated to the founder and winners of this prestigious prize
• The Nordic Museum , focusing on Swedish history and culture.
• The Skyview , one of the city's most impressive vantage points
• The entrance to Storkyrkan , Stockholm Cathedral.
• The Waldermarsudde , the royal picture gallery with some of Sweden's most important paintings

On the official Go City website you can find a detailed list of all the attractions included in the Stockholm Pass. Here you can click on each individual attraction to get some brief information on what it is about, learn about the details for visiting and the benefits offered by using the card.

In some museums in addition to admission you are entitled to a free audio guide, or a discount at the attached gift store.

The Stockholm Pass does not include public transportation .

There is to say, however, that you can take advantage of hop-on hop-off tour buses and ferries , again in hop-on hop-off mode with unlimited access for the duration of the pass .

With these vehicles you can reach Stockholm's main tourist spots, with the ability to hop on and off as you please. You also have audio commentary explaining what you can admire on board or once you get off at the next stop.

The buses are those of City Sightseeing, green and red in color. There are also other tourist buses, also red, from the company "Stockholm RED Buses," but these are not included in the pass.

Hop-on hop-off buses are a good alternative for getting around Stockholm, but they do not reach all parts of the city. They also operate from about 10 a.m., and in winter they stop running as early as mid-afternoon. Therefore, if you want more freedom in getting around when the tour buses are not running and for other needs, you must rely on the city's efficient public transportation network.

A few single tickets might be enough, but for frequent use of city buses, subways or streetcars, buy the Stockholm Travel Card . This is Stockholm's card dedicated exclusively to public transportation . A pass that allows unlimited travel on subways, buses, trains and some ferries for 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days or more.

Stockholm metro station

For most of the museums and attractions included in the Stockholm Pass, simply show your pass at the entrance to enter . There are no real "skip the line," but it is rare to find long lines or wait times.

Note that attractions or tours included in the Stockholm Pass cannot be booked in advance. This is usually not a problem, just go to the ticket office and pick up your ticket for the first available tour.

However, during periods with particular tourist crowds you may have difficulty finding available seats for Strömma's boat tours . They are a favorite activity among tourists and availability sells out quickly.

If you are visiting Stockholm in the high season , it is therefore essential to show up at the boat tour ticket office in the morning as soon as it opens, so that you can find some seats on the day's tours.

Stockholm Pass Prices

Stockholm Pass list prices are high, but they are practically always discounted on the official website.

Below you will find the costs with the discount already applied , in Swedish kronor (SEK) and with the equivalent in euros, at the current exchange rate as I write this article.

1-DAY PASS: SEK 869 for adults → approx. € 77 SEK 279 for children (6-15 years old) → approx. € 25

2-DAY PASS: SEK 1179 for adults → about € 105 SEK 429 for children (6-15 years old) → approx. € 38

3-DAY PASS: SEK 1419 for adults → approx. € 126 SEK 529 for children (6-15 years old) → approx. € 47

4-DAY PASS: SEK 1679 for adults → approx. € 149 SEK 619 for children (6-15 years old) → about € 55

5-DAY PASS: SEK 1829 for adults → about € 163 SEK 699 for children (6-15 years old) → approx. € 62

In addition to the discount already provided on the site, you can apply an additional 5% discount by entering the code AFFGOALL in the appropriate "promo code" field.

In addition to the "time" limits provided by this card for Stockholm, there is also to pay attention that there are also limits in terms of "value ."

Basically, there is a ceiling in kroner that can be spent on attractions. As the Stockholm Pass is used, fees are subtracted from this ceiling, calculated based on the normal price of attractions/tours (i.e., the ticket provided for those without passes). Once the limit is reached, the card no longer works and is no longer valid for visiting other attractions.

Perhaps the concept is not so immediate to understand, but in my opinion it should not matter to you too much. It is good to know that they exist, but the expected limits are quite high and you are unlikely to go to exhaust this spending budget .

Specifically, the available limit values are:

• 1 day: 2,750 SEK for adults and 1,690 SEK for children.
• 2 days: 4,640 SEK for adults and 2,720 SEK for children.
• 3 days: 6,390 SEK for adults and 3,655 SEK for children.
• 4 days: 7,900 SEK for adults and 4,540 SEK for children.
• 5 days: 9,260 SEK for adults and 5,350 SEK for children.

This information is not expressed so clearly and prominently on the official website, however you will find it listed on this Go City page .

The convenience of the Stockholm Pass is essentially determined by what you plan to do or see in the Swedish capital.

In fact, this card includes so many attractions and activities. If you plan to include many of these in your itinerary, you will also save a lot of money.

To give you an idea, assuming a three-day itinerary with a visit to Storkyrkan, Vasa Museum, Viking Museum and Nordic Museum, plus sightseeing bus, SkyView, Stockholm boat tour and Fjäderholmarna island tour you would pay a total of SEK 1,799 (about €160), if you buy individual tickets. With the Stockholm Card, however, the same 3-day itinerary costs SEK 1,419 (about €126), a translated savings of about €34 . This savings is per person in the travel group. Definitely interesting, and if you visit something else the savings increase further .

On the other hand, if you are uninterested in museums or the like, if you want to enjoy more of the city's atmosphere, walk around and explore Stockholm on foot, you will hardly be able to take advantage of the convenience of the pass. Questionable choice anyway, Stockholm really has a lot to offer!

However, it may be the case for very short vacations of 1 or 2 days. For the short time you have, I would tell you not to crowd the itinerary too much and perhaps the card for Stockholm becomes oversized.

The convenience of the Stockholm Pass should also be evaluated according to the time of year you go on vacation.

In winter, many museums close early; making good use of the admissions and activities included in the pass requires good itinerary planning. You will also need to consider adding a public transportation pass to get around after 4 p.m., when hop-on hop-off buses stop running.

In spring and summer , opening hours are extended, tour buses run longer, and boat tours are added to the pass offerings. So with the warm season you have a wider range of possibilities , more attractions and experiences to enrich your vacation in Stockholm.

The Stockholm Pass can be bought well in advance, perhaps taking advantage of some special discounts. You then have 2 years to use it.

The pass is activated only when scanned for the first time, at one of Stockholm's attractions. The purchased days of validity, 1, 2, 3 , 4 or 5 , start from the first use. These are meant to be calendar days (not 24 hours), consecutive to each other.

Validity also ends when the maximum available value is reached.

Unactivated Stockholm Passes are fully refundable within 90 days of purchase . To request a refund, simply contact Go City customer service online, by email or via the form at the bottom of the FAQ page .

By subway, tram, bus, ferry, or commuter train. Stockholm's local transportation network takes you almost anywhere.

Stockholm Public Transport, SL, is responsible for buses, underground trains, commuter trains, trams, and certain ferry lines in Greater Stockholm.

A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes, costs 42 SEK (26 SEK for senior citizens and children/teenagers/students up to the age of 20), and can be purchased at SL's customer service shops, through their app, or directly at the turnstiles and on buses using a credit card. It's also possible to buy 24-hour, 72-hour, 7-day and 30-day tickets. A parent with a stroller gets to ride for free on any of Stockholm's buses.

It's not possible to pay cash for tickets on buses in Stockholm. Failure to show a valid ticket during a control will result in a 1500 SEK penalty fee.

Is The Stockholm Pass Worth It?

A three-day Stockholm Pass , including a travel card, costs about 96 euros for one adult, although discounts can sometimes be found online. In my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to see the highlights of Stockholm on a budget.

The Stockholm Pass is all-inclusive and provides access to popular attractions, like:

• Vasa Museum
• Archipelago tour
• Nobel Prize Museum
• Many different boat tours
• Hop-on hop-off bus
• SkyView Stockholm
• 15+ Museums

The best way to decide if it’s worth buying the pass is to plan all the attractions you want to see beforehand and work out how much individual tickets would cost. In most cases, if you plan on any paid experiences, the Stockholm Pass helps save some money.

One thing to note is that many of the activities included are seasonal, so if you’re visiting during the winter, be sure to double-check that your desired attractions are available.

3 days in Stockholm: Day one

The best way to kick-start any trip to Stockholm is with a visit to the iconic Vasa Museum. This 17th-century ship sank to the bottom of the archipelago before being recovered 333 years later in remarkably good condition, meaning you can really see how the ship would have looked all those centuries ago. You can walk around the ship in all her glory at your own leisure or take a guided tour to learn more.

The ABBA Museum

Just as iconic as the Vasa and probably more famous is ABBA, and just a short walk away from the Vasa Museum you can find the ABBA museum. Dedicated to all things ABBA, this interactive museum is a must for any ABBA fan. Here you can learn about the story of ABBA, see the costumes, and get yourself digitally dressed up in full ABBA gear before hitting the hologram stage to perform as the band’s 5th member.

Close to the ABBA Museum is Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum, which allows you to experience how it would have been to live in Sweden in the past. You can also visit the bakery to try some traditional, homemade bread and cakes.

Skansen is also home to many Nordic animals such as wolves, reindeer, and wolverines and there is a children’s petting zoo. In addition to learning a bit about Sweden’s history and nature, you can visit the aquarium, with 2,000 exotic species including a whole host of monkeys in Monkey World. It costs extra to go to the aquarium but it is well worth it if you are interested in seeing some animals.

The Royal National City Park

Once you’ve visited the museums and know everything there is to know about Sweden and it’s history and culture, you can take a stroll around the Royal National City Park. The park is more than 10km long and is full of wildlife, although you’ll also find museums and other points of interest as you wander your way through.

3 days in Stockholm: Day two

Archipelago cruise.

Start your second day in Stockholm with a boat trip out into the archipelago. The Stockholm archipelago is one of the city’s best features and once you get out on the boat it’s not hard to see why Stockholmers love it so much. In summer, the locals like to head out to the islands to spend time in summer houses and cruising around on boats. A boat tour is a great way to experience this firsthand. Archipelago boat tours run all year round, although there are more departure times and different tour lengths available in the summer; timetables can be found online .

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet) in Gamla Stan is one of Europe’s largest palaces and is the official residence of the Swedish royal family. The impressive Baroque-style building is also home to several museums, including the armory and the treasury, so if you’re a palace enthusiast, make sure you save plenty of time for this trip.

If you also want to check out the church where Sweden’s monarchs are buried (Riddarholmen Church), you can buy a joint ticket. The medieval abbey on the island of Riddarholmen is just a 10-minute walk away from the palace.

Stortorget and the Nobel Museum

After you’ve seen the palace you can start exploring the winding, cobbled streets of Gamla Stan (the old town). Make your way to the old town square (Stortorget) where you can take your own photo of the red, yellow, and green buildings that you’ll see on every magnet and postcard in the gift shops.

At Stortorget you will also find the Stockholm Stock Exchange building, built in the late 1700s and, while it is no longer home to the stock exchange, you can find the Nobel Museum here. As well as exploring the exhibitions on the different Nobel prizes, you can take a 35-minute guided tour to learn about the history of Alfred Nobel and hear about some of the over 900 Nobel Laureates.

3 days in Stockholm: Day three

Drottningholm palace.

While the Royal Palace is the official residence of the Swedish royal family, Drottningholm Palace is where they actually live. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is representative of typical European architecture from the 1600s when it was built.

The most scenic route to the palace is by boat, which you can take from the City Hall (this option, unfortunately, isn’t available if you’re visiting in the winter as the water freezes over. You will instead need to take the metro and a bus). The boat journey takes around one hour and you can even choose to have lunch or dinner onboard.

Once you arrive at Drottningholm, you can wander the building and grounds by yourself, or alternatively take a guided tour and learn in more detail about the history of the palace and its residents. Aside from the beautiful palace and gardens, you will find a Chinese pavilion, Royal Chapel and the most well preserved 18th-century theatre in Europe, still with its original stage machinery in full working order.

If you take the boat back from Drottningholm you will find yourself just a short walk from Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset). Located by the edge of the lake, its tower is a core part of the Stockholm skyline and you get great views of Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen across the water from its small grounds. If you want to go inside the City Hall you need to book a tour, as it is not possible to go in unattended.

Tours in English only run in the summer, but you can take a tour in Swedish all year round. The tour lasts around 45 minutes and includes the grandiose Blue and Golden Halls, known for hosting the Nobel Banquet and ball respectively, following the annual prize-giving ceremonies.

As well as taking a tour of the City Hall, you can climb up the tower, which offers spectacular aerial views of Stockholm. You need to book a time and buy a ticket to go up the tower (this is separate to the City Hall tour ticket) and it is worth bearing in mind that there are quite a lot of steps to get up to the top.

Norr Mälarstrand, Södermalm and Fotografiska

Once you’ve finished looking around the City Hall you can walk all the way along the water’s edge at Norr Mälarstrand (translated as the northern shore of Lake Mälaren), towards Västerbron (the western bridge), and across to Södermalm.

If you don’t want to walk, or just want to walk part of the way, you can take the bus instead, however, the walk is really beautiful and allows you to see parts of the city that locals love but tourists are less likely to visit.

Along the route, there are several nice restaurants and bars, particularly in the summer when the ice cream kiosk is open and the floating bar/garden combination that is Mälarpaviljongen opens up for the season.

Once you reach the end of Norr Mälarstrand you will find yourself in a large park (Rålambshovsparken), which has a boule bar in the summer months. From here you can walk over Västerbron, another opportunity to get some fantastic views of Stockholm, and into Södermalm.

Södermalm is central Stockholm’s southern island and is known for its laid-back hipster vibe. It is also very beautiful to walk around, with buildings carefully positioned in and around its rocky cliffs and many excellent viewpoints where you can look down on the northern islands below.

If you enjoy walking around and want to experience some of the views, you can go to Skinnarviksberget, which is Stockholm’s highest natural viewpoint, allowing you to see across to Norr Mälarstrand and the City Hall. From Skinnarviksberget you can walk along Monteliusvägen, a 500-meter long path cut into the side of the cliff, overlooking the lake and down to Gamla Stan.

Just walking around and enjoying the quiet back streets of Södermalm can be a really enjoyable way to spend a few hours, however, it is also worthwhile heading to the photography museum, Fotografiska .

Not just for the photography exhibitions from both international and Swedish artists, but also for the excellent restaurant and cafe on the top floor, which overlooks the lake to the north and serves seasonal, plant-focused dishes. If you’re visiting on a weekend you should book a brunch, the price of which includes the entrance fee, however, it is very popular so you should try to book several weeks in advance.

In short, yes. There is no denying that Stockholm is one of Europe’s most expensive cities. But there are ways to do Stockholm on a budget, even if you’re only visiting for 3 days, like getting the Stockholm Pass as mentioned above.

So much! Highlights of this three-day Stockholm itinerary include visiting several museums (including the ABBA Museum ), an archipelago cruise , Drottningholm Palace , and much more.

This itinerary for Stockholm in 3 days can be done year-round. But keep in mind that winter in Stockholm can be quite cold and the days are very short as well, though the Christmas season can be quite special. The off-season months of May and September tend to see the best prices and fewer crowds, though Stockholm during the summer is lovely as well. Just be prepared for bigger crowds.

Stockholm, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark are two cities that are often compared. And the truth is that both have a lot to offer in terms of Nordic city culture. Stockholm has a bit more Nordic history and is actually slightly cheaper than Copenhagen, though Copenhagen has more art and a bit of an edgier vibe. It’s hard to pick between the two! Where to eat in Stockholm

Rörstrandsgatan

If you’re not sure what to eat or haven’t booked a table anywhere, you can head to Rörstrandsgatan in Norrmalm. Here you will find every type of restaurant you can think of. In the summer the street is pedestrianized and filled with outdoor seating. It is a very popular place with locals, particularly after work when the sun shines down the street, allowing everyone to enjoy their dinner bathing in the warm rays.

Kvarnen and Pelikan

If you want to try some traditional Swedish cuisine during your visit you can visit Kvarnen or Pelikan. Both are located in Södermalm and situated inside old beer halls, the high ceilings contributing to a buzzing atmosphere. At both restaurants, you will find classic dishes such as meatballs, västerbotten cheese pie, reindeer and herring.

Fjäderholmarnas Krog

You can combine a trip to the archipelago with a delicious meal by heading to Fjäderholmarna, just a half an hour boat trip from central Stockholm. In the summer there are several cafes and restaurants on the island, however, one of the best is Fjäderholmarnas Krog, situated right by the edge of the water looking out to the Baltic Sea. From here you can watch the large cruise ships make their way out to sea as you enjoy your meal. Boats run back to town until around midnight so there’s always time for a nice after-dinner walk around the island too.

  Vete-katten

While you are in Sweden you might hear the word “fika” used quite regularly. Fika is essentially having a cup of coffee and a cake and it is an important part of Swedish culture, so be sure to take plenty of fika breaks during your stay.

There are many wonderful cafes and coffee shops all around Stockholm so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding one, however, if you want a touch of history with your fika you can try Vete-katten, a Stockholm institution. Vete-katten was founded in 1928 by Ester Nordhammar, one of the very few women at the time to run her own business. Today the cafe retains its 1920s-style charm and everything is homemade from scratch.

Where to stay in Stockholm

There are many hotels of varying styles and budgets around Stockholm, so where you decide to stay is really a matter of taste.

Grand Hotel

For a bit of luxury, some of the best waterside views and a central location, Grand Hotel is the ideal choice. Aside from the spa, Grand Hotel is also home to award-winning Swedish chef Mathias Dahlgren’s Michelin-starred, modern bistro Matbaren and his more recently opened, vibrant vegetarian restaurant Rutabaga.

Lydmar Hotel

The boutique-style Lydmar Hotel is also centrally located and overlooks the water across to the Royal Palace. It has a comfortable-but-luxury feel and quirky-yet-stylish interior design. On Sundays there is a DJ in the restaurant/lounge area, creating a laid-back feel and an enjoyable way to while away the afternoon.

Hotel Rival

On the other side of town, in the hipster hotspot of Södermalm, is Hotel Rival, owned by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and with subtle nods to this throughout. The hotel also boasts several fashionable bars and a lively cafe.

Despite Stockholm’s high prices, there is also more budget accommodation available, including several options that provide something a bit different from the usual hotel experience, such as one of the boat hostels moored along the side of the lake Mälaren, each with stunning views across the city. There is also a hostel and hotel situated inside the old prison on the island of Långholmen, which includes a restaurant and a museum exhibiting the 250 year history of the prison, which closed in 1975.

Getting Around Stockholm

Stockholm is a relatively small city and it is possible to walk around the centre if you prefer, however if you want to cram in as much sightseeing as possible during your stay you’re best to get an SL travel card, which gives you access to all of Stockholm’s excellent public transport network, including the metro, buses, trams, and ferries (with the exception of some boats that are operated by Waxholmsbolaget).

A 72-hour travel card costs SEK 330 and it is easy to find your way around using the SL journey planner . If you’re planning on doing lots of sightseeing, it also might be worthwhile buying a Stockholm Pass , which gives you entrance to many of Stockholm’s main attractions.

Using the metro also gives you the excuse to explore the underground artwork. Sometimes referred to as the world’s longest art exhibit, 90 of the 100 metro stations in Stockholm have been decorated by over 150 different artists. Free tours of the metro art are available all year round, although the English tours are only offered during June to August. If you want to explore on your own, some of the more frequently photographed pieces of art can be found at Kungsträdgården, T-Centralen, Stadion, Thorildsplan, and Solna Centrum.

How to Get To Stockholm

Whether Stockholm is your only destination or part of a larger European adventure, there are several ways to reach the city.

By plane. Stockholm has 3 different airports, though if you’re flying internationally you will likey arrive at the Arlanda airport. See below for more details on how to reach the city centre from the airport.

By train. You can easily catch a train from other Swedish cities, as well as Norway, Denmark, Germany, and more other European destinations. Check Rail Europe for routes. Most routes end up at the Stockholm Central Station, where you can easily find public transportation to your accomodation.

By bus. Another option is to travel to Stockholm via bus, especially from other Swedish cities, as well as Norway, Denmark, and other destinations. Flixbus is a well-known option for budget bus travel in Europe.

By ferry . You can also reach Stockholm via ferry from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Poland, though you may arrive some distance from the city center.

Getting to Stockholm from the Airport

Stockholm has three airports; Arlanda, Bromma, and Skavsta. Arlanda is where you’ll likely arrive if you’re flying international, though European budget airlines may arrive at the others. All airports have several transportation options for reaching Stockholm city centre.

Arlanda airport

Arlanda is the main airport, with flights from all around the globe. It lies roughly 40km away from Stockholm city center and is easily accessible by public transport:

Bus: The cheapest way to get between Arlanda airport and the city center is by coach ( flygbussarna ), it takes around 45 minutes to get into the city center with several stops along the way. Tickets can be bought online, via the app, at the ticket machines, or onboard the bus. It is usually slightly cheaper to buy online or via the app and is also worth noting that it is not possible to use cash when buying a ticket on board. Tickets costs around SEK 129 one way.

Train : The fastest way to get into the city is using the Arlanda Express train , which takes 20 minutes and costs around SEK 320 one way. It is also possible to take the regular commuter train (pendeltåg), however, this takes 40 minutes and you need to pay a supplement to access the airport.

Taxi: A taxi ride to the city centre takes around 40 minutes and usually costs SEK 450-500. Be aware that taxi prices in Sweden are not regulated, so make sure you confirm pricing with your taxi driver before you set off. Pricing can also be found on the yellow label displayed in the car window.

Private transfer: If you don’t want to negotiate with a taxi and aren’t up for public transport, you can also arrange an airport transfer in advance.

Bromma airport

Bromma airport is only 7km away from the city center; the journey by bus takes around 20 minutes. The most convenient way to get to and from Bromma airport is using the flygbusarna airport coach, which costs SEK 99 one way, however, you can also use the regular bus if you wish.

Skavsta airport

Skavsta airport is the furthest away from Stockholm, situated 100km southwest of the city. Again, the flygbussarna airport coach is the best way to travel to and from the airport. It costs SEK 219 one way and takes about 70 minutes.

Many times, it includes a couple of cool things and the rest are just cheesy activities that I wouldn’t be caught dead doing.

However, this isn’t the case with the Stockholm Pass! It includes plenty of the top attractions and activities, from iconic sights and experiences, to some really cool hidden gems. I found plenty to do during my time in Stockholm, and I even wish I had more time to take advantage of more attractions included in the pass!

What is the Stockholm Pass?

The Stockholm Pass (now officially the Go City Stockholm Pass) is an all-inclusive Stockholm city pass that grants the holder entry into almost 50 of the city’s top attractions. It includes access to many of the city’s top museums and historical sites, as well as boat tours and even day trips to the surrounding islands.

A hop-on, hop-off bus AND boat is also included in the pass as well.

The digital pass is immediately loaded onto your mobile device and can easily be used by scanning the QR code at the participating attractions.

We all know that Stockholm is an expensive city, so this can be a fantastic way to save some money – I show you how in this Stockholm Pass review!

What is the difference between the Stockholm Pass vs. Stockholm Card?

Nothing! The Stockholm Card is the old name for what is now the Go City Stockholm Pass. While some of the features and attractions have been updated, the Stockholm Pass works in the same way. There is essentially no difference between the Stockholm Pass vs. Stockholm Card.

What are some advantages of the Stockholm Pass?

• Save money : This might be the biggest advantage – we all know that Stockholm is expensive AF! If you plan ahead and use it right, you can save a good amount of money using the Go City Stockholm Pass, leaving you with extra cash for more important things (like, idk, extra meatballs and cardamom buns). This is probably the biggest perk that makes the Stockholm Pass worth it!
• Save time : You’ll avoid having to line up in the ticket queue at many attractions. Simply pull up and scan the QR code on your phone to gain entry.
• Convenience : You can’t beat the convenience factor of having a Stockholm city pass – instead of lining up at ticket queues and digging around for some cash or your credit card to pay for admission, simply just pull up the QR code on your phone. Easy peasy!
• Variety : I find many city passes to be limiting in what they offer – they usually have a handful of the top attractions, and the rest are super cheesy, lame activities that I wouldn’t be caught dead doing. This is NOT the case with the Stockholm Pass! I absolutely love the variety of activities that it offers – museums, historical sites, boat tours, and even day trips. There’s plenty of interesting things to see and do, that makes the Stockholm Pass worth it even for return visitors. You won’t get bored using this Stockholm city pass!

How much does the Stockholm Pass cost?

The Go City Stockholm Pass is available in durations of 1, 2, 3, and 5 days.

Pricing is as follows: 

• 1 day : 549 SEK
• 2 days : 959 SEK
• 3 days : 1209 SEK
• 5 days : 1569 SEK

There is also a child pass available for those aged 6-15:

• 1 day : 249 SEK
• 2 days : 369 SEK
• 3 days : 479 SEK
• 5 days : 629 SEK

However, some museums and attractions offer free admission for those under 18, so look up which ones you want to visit and do the math to determine if the Stockholm Pass is worth it for your child.

How do I purchase the Stockholm Pass?

Upon purchase, you will receive the pass via email. Simply download the app to access your QR code, or print it out if you want to use a physical copy.

The pass becomes activated once it gets scanned at your first attraction.

How do I use the Stockholm Pass?

Your Stockholm Pass becomes active once you scan the QR code to enter your first attraction.

Do keep in mind that the Stockholm Pass is valid on consecutive days NOT for the corresponding number of hours (24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, etc) as with the old version of the pass. 

This means that once the pass is scanned, it is only valid on consecutive calendar days regardless of the time of day. For example, if you purchase a 2 day pass on a Tuesday and activate it at 2 pm, you only have until the end of Wednesday to use it, NOT until Thursday afternoon.

Therefore, to really make the Stockholm Pass worth it, get an early start on your first day! This will ensure that you maximize the time available to use up your pass.

What attractions are included in the Stockholm Pass?

Hop On, Hop Off Bus (490 SEK) + Boat (360 SEK)

In the past, I used to always turn my nose up at these Hop On, Hop Off tours because I thought they’d be cheesy, but after doing one recently, I have turned into a fan! They’re a fantastic way to get around the city, see the top sights, and learn interesting tidbits and fun facts about them. 

Stockholm takes it one step further and also has a Hop On, Hop Off boat as well.

Both the Hop On, Hop Off Bus and Boat are valid for the duration of your pass, which makes the Stockholm Pass worth it. However, a good way to get an introduction to the city and to get your bearings is to do it on the first day.

Drottningholm Palace (260 SEK) + Theatre (110 SEK)

Sitting just outside of Stockholm, Drottningholm Palace is the official residence of the King and Queen of Sweden. The beautiful palace draws inspiration from 16th and 17th century French architecture (like that of Versailles in Paris), and is one of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sweden.

The palace grounds also feature a park, baroque garden, and Chinese Pavilion. In addition, the Stockholm city pass also allows you to the theatre, one of the best preserved from this time period. The boat ride to get to the palace is super scenic as well, and makes a lovely excursion on your Stockholm itinerary.

• Skansen (220 SEK)

Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum, and is essentially Sweden in miniature. You’ll learn about all aspects of Swedish life and culture, throughout history up until today. Staff dress in period costumes and offer demonstrations showcasing traditional handicrafts, music, and food. There is also a zoo with Nordic animals.

In addition, you’ll find mini villages with over 150 examples of Swedish dwellings to show how Swedes lived and worked throughout time. The houses were collected from various parts of the country, deconstructed and transported to Skansen, and then rebuilt on site.

• Vasa Museum (190 SEK)

The Vasa Museum is one of Stockholm’s most unique museums. It showcases the 17th century Vasa warship, considered the most impressive of its time. Unfortunately, the ship was too top-heavy and sank on its maiden voyage, just 20 minutes from shore.

It was salvaged out of the ocean 300 years later, and painstakingly restored to all of its original glory. You’ll see it on display here, with its intricately carved details.

Under the Bridges Boat Tour (345 SEK)

Stockholm is a city built on 14 islands connected by more than 50 bridges. One of the best ways to see the city is from the water, and the Under the Bridges tour takes you past some of Stockholm’s most iconic sights, and under some of its bridges. 

On this one-hour cruise, you’ll sail by such attractions as Gamla Stan, Sodermalm, and Djugarden, as well as see the inner island and through a lock that connects the Baltic Sea with Lake Mälaren. 

Royal Canal Boat Tour (260 SEK)

Another fantastic boat tour, the Royal Canal tour sails through the Djugarden Canal, which was built under the orders of King Charles XIV in 1825. Located in the Sodermalm neighborhood, Fotografiska is one of the most interesting museums in Stockholm. The world-renowned photography center and museum showcases the works of the world’s most famous photographers (such as Annie Leibovitz), as well as up-and-coming artists. It usually has four large exhibitions and 20 smaller installations throughout the year.

One plus about Fotografiska is that it is open late every night, so if you are looking for ways to use your Stockholm Pass after everything else has closed, this is a good place to do it!

• Archipelago Tour (345 SEK)

Stockholm’s archipelago is the second largest in the Baltic Sea and extends over 50 miles from the city. It boasts some 30,000 islands, rocks, and skerries that have been carved out by glaciers over the course of millions of years.

One of the best ways to get a taste of the archipelago (especially if you have limited time in the city) is to take an archipelago cruise , during which you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours and see some of the islands, hear stories about the people who live on them, as well as enjoy some beautiful views of the water. 

Fjaderholmarna (170 SEK)

A few of the islands on the archipelago are home to charming villages that are perfect for a day trip. If you want to experience one of them, or are looking for a day trip option, consider taking an excursion to Fjaderholmarna .

Known as the “gateway to the archipelago” because it is the closest island to the city, Fjaderholmarna is home to quaint boutiques, seaside restaurants, trails, and plenty of spots to sunbathe and makes a perfect half-day or full-day excursion.

What attractions are NOT included in the Stockholm Pass?

While the Stockholm Pass includes many of the top activities in the city, there are a few popular attractions that are included. Keep in mind that the following are NOT included in the Stockholm Pass when making your decision whether the Stockholm Pass is worth it:

• ABBA Museum (there used to be a discount available in the old pass, however, this is no longer the case)
• Royal Palace (this used to be included in the old Stockholm Pass, but was removed in the newest version)
• Moderna Museet (admission is already free, though)
• Transit Pass (in the past, this used to be offered as an add-on with the Stockholm city pass, but it is no longer the case. However, the price of the pass was sold at cost, so even if you buy directly from SE it is the same price)

Sample itinerary using the Stockholm Pass

I used a 3 day Stockholm Pass on a 4 day trip to Stockholm. Below is a breakdown of how I used it. Keep in mind that if you use the hop-on, hop-off bus and/or boat to get around (priced 490 SEK/360 SEK), you can save even more money!

Still wondering if you should buy the Stockholm Pass? Honestly, I think the Stockholm Pass is worth it for most people, BUT consider the following when deciding if the Stockholm Pass is worth it for you:

The Stockholm Pass is worth it for you if…

• Your Stockholm itinerary is between 2-5 days : This will give you a good amount of time to take advantage of all the attractions and activities that are included in the pass! You’ll get to experience a good mix of museums, historical sites, boat tours, and excursions.
• You are a first time visitor to Stockholm and want to experience the top things to do : Many of the city’s iconic sights and top activities are included, which makes the Stockholm Pass worth it for first time visitors.
• You are a return visitor to Stockholm and looking for new things to do : There are plenty of activity options included with the pass, including day trips, so the Stockholm Pass is also worth it if you are a return visitor.
• You want the flexibility to see a lot of attractions without having to worry about price. Since it is an all-inclusive pass, you won’t have to worry about paying for all the included attractions individually – this is such a big convenience! 
• You plan to do at least 2-3 activities a day

The Stockholm Pass is NOT worth it for you if…

• You are only in Stockholm for one day . You would have to cram in a LOT during your one day in Stockholm in order to make the Stockholm Pass worth it for you.
• You plan on having a super relaxed itinerary. You need to do at least 2-3 activities a day in order to make the Stockholm Pass worth it. It also isn’t worth it if you are staying in Stockholm for more than five days.
• You prefer to wander the city. If you don’t want to visit attractions or do tours, and prefer to just sightsee by wandering the streets, eating, drinking, and shopping, then the Stockholm Pass probably is not worth it for you.
• You are an extreme budget traveler . If you are on a budget wouldn’t pay for any attractions or tours anyway, then the Stockholm Pass probably isn’t worth it for you

Is the Stockholm Pass 2020 worth it? Stockholm Pass review and prices

As one of Europe’s more remote and expensive capitals, Stockholm doesn’t get nearly the visitor numbers of cities like Paris or London or Rome. Even so, Stockholm is a stunning place that is packed with history and interesting sights. If you are coming on your first trip to explore the best this city has to offer, the Stockholm Pass is probably a good way to see a lot in a 2 or 3 days.

You’ll see when you look at the numbers below that the hop-on, hop-off bus and boat tour is expensive on its own and if you are going to do it anyway, the Stockholm Pass is a slam dunk. And since the bus and boat tours are the best and fastest way to see a lot of Stockholm in only a few hours, they are highly recommended whether you are considering the pass or not. The ABBA Museum is NOT included with the pass, but pretty much everything else is, so it’s easy to get your money’s worth if you plan your days at least a bit.

Is the Stockholm Pass worth it? (short version)

The main attractions in Stockholm are all fairly expensive, so it only takes 2 or 3 of them per day to make the pass worthwhile. However, it’s also important to mention that many people visit Stockholm without seeing the top attractions, and they can have a good time as well. So if you want to see at least a few of the included attractions the Stockholm Pass is good value. But if those tours and attractions don’t seem too interesting to you, it’s probably better to skip the pass.

If you’ve seen photos of Stockholm, you’ve seen photos of the Viking-style warship Vasa, which sunk in 1628 and was recovered in 1961. This popular museum is another one that you’ll at least want to visit quickly, which is easy to do with the Stockholm Pass because you don’t feel like you have to spend hours there to “get your money’s worth.”

This 50-minute boat tour takes you around the most central and photogenic islands in Stockholm’s lovely harbour.

Everyone knows the Nobel Prize, and this museum shows you all about how they started and how they work. Again, if you go in with a pass you can do a short visit without the guilt.

Sweden’s oldest amusement park is obviously big with families. The Stockholm Pass is good for admission to the park, which is a lovely place to spend a few hours. You can buy ride tickets once inside if you like.

SkyView : SEK150

Not unlike the London Eye or other Ferris Wheels, the SkyView is actually a 20-minute ride over the top of the Ericsson Globe. Some think the individual ticket price is too high for 20 minutes, but with a Stockholm Pass that doesn’t matter because it’s included.

Drottningholm Palace and boat tour of Lake Mälaren:  SEK350

This popular boat tour out to the Drottningholm Palace leaves from next to the train station and takes 60 minutes each way. You probably won’t want to do this on a 1-day or 2-day pass, but on the longer passes this is a really nice half-day attraction.

• Visitors who are organized with a genuine interest in seeing Stockholm’s Royal Palace and other top attractions
• Visitors who want to do the HOHO bus and a boat tour as well

• Visitors who don’t enjoy HOHO bus tours or walking tours
• Stockholm visitors on very-low “backpacker” budgets
• Visitors who will be spending 3 or more days in Stockholm who would prefer to see the sights at a slower pace

Does the Stockholm Pass include transportation via train from Nynashamn to Stockholm?

If you buy a Travel Card with your Stockholm Pass then yes, it does cover transportation all the way to Nynäshamn, which is the last stop on the pink line. Have a great trip. -Roger

Hi. I would like to know if HOHO bus is ok for babies? Our will be 11 months old, so must we buy card for her as well?

I just checked the City Sightseeing Stockholm site and see that they allow you to “purchase” a ticket for kids from 0 to 5, but it comes up as free in the shopping cart. The Stockholm Pass starts their Child Pass at age 6, so I’m sure kids under 6 are free. Those City Sightseeing buses are pretty good quality so you shouldn’t have any problems. There are currently two different tourist passes available in Stockholm, and they each provide discounts on a variety of popular attractions and activities in the city.

This overview provides an explanation of how these services work, how much you can expect to save, and the best way to use them to save money.

Each pass includes admission to dozens of different activities for a specific amount of time (1, 2, 3, or 5 days).

The way it works is that you’ll pay one flat price for the service and every attraction included will be covered by the pass.

Depending on how you use a tourist pass, you can save up to 50% off general admission prices.

In order to get the most out of it, you’ll have to use it as much as possible while it’s valid.

Although there are some pretty expensive activities included with these services, it is important to note that you’ll need to use this pass for at least 3-4 attractions in order to start saving money.

What this means is that these tourist passes are best for people who plan on seeing and doing a lot of different things during their visit to Stockholm.

These passes typically include at least one bus tour, one boat tour, famous landmarks, and several interesting museums.

Each service is available either as a physical pass or a mobile pass, which means you can actually just download their app onto your mobile phone and use it as your pass to get into each attraction like the Swedish History Museum, and Nobel Museum.

All-inclusive passes must be used on consecutive days after they have been validated.

As such, visitors who are interested in either a boat or bus tour will probably get the most out of this pass, because those are the most valuable activities offered.

Things to Consider

Anyone planning to be in Stockholm for a week or more should keep in mind that the 3 & 7-day travel cards are an excellent way to save some money on public transportation prices.

If you’re not interested in taking a cruise and you just want an easy way to get across the water, the ferries included on this travel card could be a great alternative to the hop-on-hop-off boat excursions in Stockholm.

With so many different forms of public transport in the city, this is a great way to get around that won’t cost much at all.

Travel cards can be purchased with the Stockholm Pass, but there is no additional discount when you buy them that way – it’s just easier to buy both of them together than separately!

3 Day Itinerary Stockholm Travel Guide

Stockholm was not really on my radar for a destination I wanted to visit. Sweden in general I wanted to see just because I kind of want to see every country I possibly can. Copenhagen on the other hand is on my physical want-to-visit list.

But after the Swiftholm bonanza of 2024, this destination officially went on my wish list. After seeing how beautiful the Scandinavian city was through friends who went, I knew it was a place I wanted to see for myself.

With a direct flight from JFK to Arlanda Airport (ARN), it was an easy trip to make. And after a quick Google search of things to do, I knew it was a destination I would enjoy. It’s a walkable city, water everywhere, great food, delicious pastries and pleasant weather, especially in the summer. So off I went to Stockholm for a long weekend of solo exploring .

My itinerary had me arriving really early on Saturday morning, and departing Tuesday morning. When I arrived, I walked around my neighborhood and made my way to Old Town and toured the Grand Palace. After a sandwich and pastry, I took a nap, and then had dinner at Symbios.

On Sunday I took a ferry to Vaxholm which was a great way to spend a few hours exploring a new destination and seeing the archipelagos. After returning to Stockholm I walked around and did some shopping before having dinner at Kvarnen.

Monday was a bit more chill, and I wish I didn’t cancel my food tour (I signed up for this one and canceled last minute, regretting it after the fact). I had breakfast at my hotel and headed to Djurgården to spend most of the day. This island has the Vasa Museum, and The ABBA museum, along with a few great restaurants and parks. I then finished the day off with dinner near my hotel (did not love it, so it’s not recommended here).

This itinerary was honestly pretty light. You easily could add in another museum or two, but I enjoy taking my time and sitting at cafes and reading my book or calling a friend and catching up while sitting and taking in the views. I still feel like I saw a lot and the only thing I wish I did was the food tour.

Where To Stay

I stayed on the island of Södermalm which felt like a more local spot from everywhere else I visited in Stockholm. The hotel I stayed at was the NOFO Hotel and I absolutely loved it. It was a recommendation from my friend Katelyn who stayed there during Swiftholm.

This boutique hotel has a variety of room options from single twin rooms for the solo traveler, or suites that have a pull out couch for larger groups. Each floor has its own theme inspired by the owners’ travels. I ended up staying on the New York floor which was just ironic. It had subway signs throughout the floor and the rooms. One of the subway signs in my room was one of my subway stops. It just felt meant to be.

The NOFO Hotel is just a few blocks from great restaurants, bakeries and shopping. And just two blocks to the subway station making it really easy to get to other neighborhoods.

My favorite part about the NOFO Hotel was that it felt like it was where the locals also hung out. With a bustling wine bar and restaurant, this place had locals and hotel guests alike hanging out and enjoying the courtyard with a glass of wine. The complimentary breakfast buffet was fantastic. I loved heading down to make a plate or two and enjoy the crisp mornings in the courtyard before starting my day.

I also found this hotel to be reasonably priced. As a solo traveler, I always find it hard to book hotels that don’t break the bank and still feel cute, charming and clean.

Getting to Stockholm From ARN Airport

If you’re flying into ARN airport, there are a few options for getting into the city center. I went with the Arlanda Express train which was about $35 each way that takes you to the Central Station (Centralen) in about 20 minutes. From there, you can then take the T (their subway system) or grab a taxi to get to your hotel.

I found this very easy to do on my way into Stockholm, but completely missed the Arlanda Express on the way to the airport and ended up on a commuter train. Just keep an eye out for Arlanda Express and don’t make the same mistake I did because it can add 40 minutes to your trip.

You can also take a taxi to and from the airport. Just keep in mind traffic, and price changes based on that. Uber is also available.

Where To Eat In Stockholm

I had a long list of great restaurants to check out from recommendations. I only made it to the following ones that I really enjoyed. Every Swedish dish I had was better than the next.

Beck Kaffebar

A charming cafe with pastries and sandwiches. This was just around the corner from the NOFO hotel and was a great place to stop for an afternoon pick-me up.

A traditional Swedish restaurant serving up classic dishes like meatballs with lingonberries, reindeer, shrimp toast and more.

This was a modern restaurant with beautiful decor and ambiance. I had the beet salad which was one of the best beet salads I have ever had. I also ordered the chicken skewers which they said was one of their most popular dishes. It was served over a creamy garlic sauce with pickled chilis. It was outstanding.

Stora Bageriet

A popular bakery that has incredible pastries and coffees. They also offer a variety of savory items like salmon and shrimp toast. Everything here looks incredible. I also really appreciated that most coffee shops have a variety of milk alternatives as well as lactose-free milk.

Skroten Café & Skeppshandel

Located on Djurgården, this was a cute little cafe serving up simple Swedish dishes like fried herring, shrimp toast and more. You can sit outside overlooking the docks. I had the shrimp toast which was a hearty portion and packed with flavor yet so simple.

I realized on my way to Stockholm that my favorite bakery in NYC is in fact, Swedish! I quickly looked up this bakery thinking there was just maybe one in Stockholm, but turns out this is a popular spot and there is one on every corner. I saw them everywhere, and even accidentally went to one thinking it was a new to me bakery. Turns out, they just make a really fantastic cardamom bun. If you see one, stop in to try a pastry!

Where To Explore In Stockholm

Stockholm is made up a lot of islands and you can easily get to each of the main ones through public transportation, walking and by car. Here are a few that I visited.

This is where Old Town is located and several museums. Walk through the cobblestone streets and take in the beautiful architecture and history. Packed with shops, cafes and restaurants, this is a great place to spend some time during your stay.

This island has a lot to do on it like the ABBA museum and the Vasa museum. There’s plenty to do here and you can easily spend a good chunk of your day exploring the shops, amusement park, parks and more.

To me, Östermalm felt like the main city center. Grand and beautiful hotels lined the water along with high end shopping and restaurants. For shopping, head to NK which is a high end department store. Have afternoon tea at Grand Hôtel, or enjoy a cardamom bun at Stora and sit outside enjoying what feels like endless sunlight in the summer.

This is where my hotel was located along with a few great restaurants and cafes. There is some good shopping here as well and the Fotografiska museum. This neighborhood definitely felt like a place where locals hang out.

You’ll need to take a boat to get here as it’s about an hour away on the ferry. But it’s worth it. I loved spending the afternoon here having lunch and Swedish desserts while taking in the views. Once you arrive you can simply walk the whole island. If it’s warm, pack your swimsuit as folks were taking a dip in the water at Battery Park.

Things To Do In Stockholm

Explore the archipelagos & have lunch on vaxholm.

The Stockholm archiplegago is made up of over 24,000 islands. Take a boat tour of the islands to take in the beauty of the archipelagos. I did a 50 minute ferry to Vaxholm to explore the island. It was such a charming place and you could spend a good 2-3 hours there.

I had lunch at Bistro Magasinet which was delicious and had a view of the water. It sits above a cute home shop so be sure to stop in after your meal. Just a few minutes away by foot is Vaxholms Hembygdsgårds Café and I would definitely recommend trying a few desserts. They do a buffet where you fill your plate and pay at the counter. You can also get lunch here as well.

Eat Classic Swedish Foods & Pastries

One of the things I was so surprised by was how much I loved the food. I didn’t really have anything in mind of what to expect outside of Swedish meatballs and cardamom buns. I enjoyed every meal I had and wish I had more time to eat more.

Cardamom buns are a must-have and you’ll find the locals enjoying what they call Fika, a coffee break if you will, with a coffee and bun throughout the day in Stockholm. It’s a part of their culture to slow down, sit down with a friend and enjoy a coffee and pastry. And thanks to that, there are plenty of bakeries to stop into. I loved the cardamom buns at Fabrique and Stora. But seriously, I don’t think there are any bad ones in the city.

A few other sweets and pastries to try include chokladbollar, kladdkaka chocolate cake, kanelbulle and kardemummabulle (these are the cinnamon and cardamom buns), Princess cake and Silviakaka to name a few. Just try them all if you can. I found their sweets to not be overly sweet which I appreciated. And I’ve officially declared that Sweden has my favorite pastries and desserts out of any country I’ve ever visited.

For lunch or dinner, try Swedish meatballs, gravlax, pickled or fried herring, falu sausage, and toast Skagen (shrimp toast), are all great dishes and ingredients to try. I wish I had more time to have more meals because I thoroughly enjoyed everything I had and wanted to try even more.

Vasa Museum

A 17th century warship was built and unfortunately sunk within minutes of its maiden voyage. They pulled the wreckage out of the Baltic Sea years later and restored it. There is now a museum of the ship and the stories surrounding it on the island of Djurgården.

The ABBA Museum

Also located on Djurgården, is The ABBA Museum. Learn about the history and people of the ABBA music group at this museum. I would recommend getting tickets ahead of time as the line to purchase was long.

The Royal Palace

Take a look inside the Swedish monarch’s palace. You can spend a good hour or two walking through this and taking in all the history.

Swedish Food Tour

I canceled my food tour last minute and have 100% regrets. I love a food tour because they are such a great way to see a city on foot and get to try a LOT of dishes. This is especially nice when visiting somewhere for a short amount of time. I feel like I missed out on several classic dishes due to how few meals I was able to get in. This is the tour I booked that looked really great! If I ever go back to Stockholm, it’s the first thing I’m booking and doing!

Other Museums To Check Out

With only 3 days in Stockholm, I could only see so many museums. But there really are a lot of options that you could explore depending on your interests. Below are ones that were on my radar and I would love to check out on my next visit.

I found Stockholm to be an easy city to get around with public transportation and that most people spoke English. This city is also completely cashless. Everywhere I went was tap to pay. This was super convenient and made it really easy to get around, including the subways and buses!

If you’ve been thinking about visiting a Scandinavian city, I absolutely loved my short time in Stockholm and would definitely go back. The weather was a delight, food was great, and it was such a charming city surrounded by water.
