Recent tour reviews

I saw The Struts for the first time at The Kentish Town Forum and to say I was impressed is an understatement! What a band! What a show! They were amazing! The lead singer is from the Freddie Mercury mould, such a showman! Great voice, plays the piano beautifully, flamboyant, charismatic and works the crowd expertly.

The lead guitarist was also amazing and actually performed a solo during the set. He looks like a proper Rock guitarist, big hair, chest out, weilding his guitar with aplomb.

Their music is similar to the likes of Queen, The Darkness, even Slade in parts, proper glam rock with the outfits to match. The songs are so great and every one felt like it could be a finale, with the crowd being worked after every one. Such a great band, a must see live.

How about having a stadium caliber band playing in a small sweaty venue with a bar at the back that takes up half the space?

I’ve been to hundreds of concerts, but never, ever since Queen at Wembley have I seen so much charisma and talent on stage. Perfect in every way. The friendliness of the band, their respect for the fans, and the clear fun they have in giving the show made it the most memorable one ever.

Thanks you Struts. You are going to be HUGE and I’ll be telling the story over and over to my grand kids of how I was there. In that little Betlin club at the end of your tour to see you just as you stepped into universal stardom. I give you 3/5 years before you are indicted in the Rock n roll hall of fame. Now I must turn up the volume to my Struts.

The energy in the venue began the moment they took the stage. What an an amazing night was had by all. Luke commanded the stage in a way that has not been seen since the likes of the Legend Mr. Freddie Mercury.

I found this band about four years ago on youtube and it is about time they are getting recognized for the sheer talent that they they all are blessed with. If people do not know the Struts now, they will!!

I cannot wait for my next experience. Long Island Loves The Struts!!

ABOUT THE STRUTS: The Struts have been a live sensation since they first erupted onto the scene with their certified Platinum anthem, “Could’ve Been Me,” taking the No. 5 spot on Alternative Radio and introducing the world to their triumphant, timeless rock sound. Following the release of their critically-acclaimed debut, 2016’s Everybody Wants, the British rockers set out on the road, bringing their energetic tracks alive on stage with larger-than-life performances and cementing their reputation as a must-see live act. Lead vocalist Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies have continued to prove themselves worthy of that distinction since first coming together in Derby, England back in 2012. They’ve opened for the likes of the Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, and Guns N’ Roses, while selling out shows across the globe and leaving a trail of unbridled rock collections, including 2018’s Young & Dangerous and 2020’s Strange Days, in their wake. Their on-stage prowess and perpetual musicality have allowed them to reach the No. 1 spot on Spotify’s Viral Top 50, garner more than 850 million on-demand streams. Now, The Struts have taken the raucous nature of their live shows and transmuted it into an album, fusing their arena-sized energy into their most concentrated and exciting songs to date. “This record showcases each individual member’s strengths,” Spiller says of their fourth album and first full-length release on Big Machine/John Varvatos Records, Pretty Vicious. “It’s some of my favorite music, hands down, we’ve ever conjured up. It’s the record everyone’s been waiting for.”

The Struts Are the Glam-Rock Style Gods We Need Right Now

On the eve of a U.S. summer tour, the English rockers open up about their audacious on-stage style, their second full-length album, and their unexpected off-duty look.

Performance, Musical, Stage, Performing arts, Event, heater, Musical theatre, Fashion, Performance art, Scene,

Luke Spiller has not one, not two, but three top hats that were made for him by fans. He’s worn two of them on stage. “They’re brilliant,” he tells me, lounging on the couch in a small back room of Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts before taking the stage to a sold-out crowd. (He does not comment on the third, and it seems like this is a kindness.)

Fashion, Event, Fashion design, Outerwear, Fun, Dress, Performance, Costume design, Haute couture, Formal wear,

That's because the Struts are gleefully, refreshingly out-of-synch with the way most popular music sounds nowadays. Founded in Derby, England, in 2009, the band has embraced a glam-rock ebullience that practically demands top hats (along with capes, sequins, fringe, and leopard print, for that matter). The current lineup—Spiller, plus guitarist and co-founder Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies—was established in 2012, and has garnered a reputation not only for anthemic singles like “It Could Have Been Me,” but also downright impressive live shows, complete with costumes that’d make Freddie Mercury proud.

“When The Struts came together, that was something that I very much carried into this project,” says Spiller, “and from the word 'go' was very focused on creating excitement visually as well as sonically.” He started out making his own performance pieces, sewing together “these kind of cape things,” or customizing thrift-store finds like just-different-enough blazers to make them fit and feel more stage-friendly.

Hair, Sitting, Fashion, Beauty, Black hair, Cool, Fashion design, Furniture, Room, Dress,

In the band’s earlier days, “I think that Luke maybe had a clearer idea than the rest of us might have” when it came to creating an aesthetic, says Elliott. Still, all four members were giving it a shot—and all living in the same house, where they’d throw themed parties. “It’d be Hippie Night, or Mod Night, and it’d be some £10 fucking blazer that we’d pull out that looked a little bit more fancy than what you’d wear down the shops,” recalls Elliott.

“I remember when Jed and Geth first joined the band, I gave ‘em £200 of my own money because they didn’t have anything to wear,” Spiller interjects. “I was like, ‘Go! Buy something!’”

“That’s what I loved about joining the band at the start, though,” says Davies. “It was the vision. It wasn’t just music, it was everything. And it was us being a collective.”

Performance, Entertainment, Stage, Text, Performing arts, Music, Concert, Font, Musician, Event,

It did take some doing, though. “There was a learning curve, for sure,” says Elliott. “I look back at pictures from six years ago, like ‘What the fuck was I wearing on stage?’ It was all wrong. But you live and learn.”

And, if you’re lucky, you book a gig with The Rolling Stones , which The Struts did in 2014 with just a four-track EP called Kiss This under their belts. It was a massive milestone—and the moment when the band achieved glam ascendency.

Hair, Human, Fashion, Arm, Long hair, Flesh, Photography, Dress, Performance, Chest,

“I didn’t really have anything custom-made for me at that point,” Spiller explains. But he was eying the work of Zandra Rhodes , the English designer who famously dressed not only Mercury, but Queen guitarist Brian May as well. “It was actually my mom, funny enough, who told me to get in contact with her,” he says. He reached out via email (“the old-fashioned way”) and commissioned a look. The costume—with its bright blue, winged top—was a hit, and that was the beginning of an even bolder style for The Struts. “Once you do something like that, it’s hard to go back,” Spiller says.

For the past five years or so, the band has been working with another legend of rock ‘n’ roll costume design: Ray Brown , who’s created outfits for everyone from AC/DC’s Bon Scott to Mötley Crüe and the Arctic Monkeys. It was that last band that put him on The Struts’ radar.

“I’m a big Arctic Monkeys fan,” says Davies, who decided to reach out to Brown after learning he worked with the band. “I just thought his stuff was really unique and cool, so I think I gave him £100 to make me a sequin waistcoat.” That turned into a discussion about the importance of visuals for touring bands, and, eventually, into a long-term partnership. “Since then, all of our costumes are made by him,” says Davies. “It’s definitely added to the showy bit.”

Monochrome, Black-and-white, Monochrome photography, Photography, Event, Musician, Music, Style, Street, Performance,

And as the band’s sound has progressed—first with the 2014 album Everybody Wants (released in 2016 in the U.S.) , and then with last fall’s Young & Dangerous —so has its style. “It’s kind of like the music,” Spiller says. “The first album, you could hear a lot of everything in there, really directly, influence-wise. And now, our second album, is very Struts. It’s not like, ‘This one sounds like this, and this one sounds like that.’ It’s not like that, it just sounds like The Struts. And I think the look is like that as well.”

Of course, there’s always room to grow. Currently, the band’s entire stage wardrobe is managed by the members themselves, with some assistance from Spiller’s girlfriend, model Laura Cartier Millon, and their assistant tour manager. It’s no mean feat, especially when you have a frontman who’s doing two or three costume changes over the course of a show. But it’s also the reality of the situation.

Facial hair, Hat, Style, Beard, Headgear, Costume accessory, Jacket, Fashion, Moustache, Street fashion,

“I would love to be able to expand what we’re doing and push it and push it and push it. But financially, we simply don’t have the cash to do that,” Spiller says. “We have to—I don’t want to say play it safe—but we kind of have to go for things at the moment that we know work. Push it a little bit, and then thread some sort of consistency throughout all four members.” (The irony of implying the band's current look is “safe” doesn't seem to register, which speaks volumes about The Struts' appetite for pageantry.)

Spiller is looking forward to a moment when that changes, likely when Young & Dangerous gets a follow-up record. Thanks to singles like “Body Talk,” the remix of which features none other than Kesha, the band’s profile is growing, especially Stateside. And that might just mean a bigger clothing budget. “I already know what I want to do on the next album," Spiller says.

In the meantime, it’s all about making due with what’s on-hand. “Even the talk of having another costume case made our tour manager’s head explode,” Spiller jokes. They have a one-off stop in April for Lalapalooza Brazil, but The Struts’ proper U.S. summer tour kicks off in May in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby Festival. There will be one bus, one trailer, and, in all likelihood, no more costume cases than there were in the fall and winter. Spiller and crew will still be ironing their own pieces—“that’s when you know you’re making far too much money, when you’ve got someone actually dedicated to fucking iron your shirt”—and tapping significant others and tour managers to assist with mid-set clothing changes. And they will still look like glam-rock gods up there.

But before that happens, there’s a momentary lull, something no one in the band takes lightly. That means instead of sequins and eyeliner, there’s time to dress down for a change. Slack is emblematic of the entire group’s off-duty mentality. “I dress very practically when I’m home,” he says. He describes the sartorial calculations of going down to his local pub: “I’ll put my nice warm shoes on, thick socks, thick coat, and a beanie. And I’m thinking, ‘Ah well, I’m wearing my boots, and it might be quite cold there, but I’ve got to look cool.’ Fuck that. Just practicality.”

Social group, Fashion, Fun, Team, Event, Photography, Fashion design, Tourism, Jeans,

Aside from more obvious bands—Queen, the Stones—Spiller notes another group he and The Struts look to for inspiration, and not just of the musical kind: Oasis. “I have to say, the Oasis look is our walking-to-the-pub, casual look,” he says. “I want to have a nice big parka on, have a pint, have a cigarette, be able to stand outside and enjoy it.”

I mention that might be a lot harder in a cape.

“I did that once. And I almost died of hypothermia. Mid-November.”

New Music Releases and Summer Tour News: From The Struts and Brotality to Will Hoge and Bobby Mahoney

New Music Releases is a column that keeps abreast of all the news from the music industry that often flies under the radar. Keep up-to-date with the underground and independent scene and find your next favorite band or singer-songwriter right here.

Munich-based Cadet Carter release new album 'Self-Maintenance'

Munich's Cadet Carter have released their new album 'Self-Maintenance'. The band, fronted by Welsh lead singer Nick Sauter, has made quite an impact on the European music scene since starting out in late 2017.

Their 2020 album 'Perceptions' made it to #14 on the European Alternative Rock chart, and before the pandemic stopped all touring, the band played a ton of shows supporting artists like Touché Amoré, The Dangerous Summer, Stand Atlantic and As December Falls.

In 2022, the band released another album entitled 'Anthems For The Weak' to great reviews before embarking on their first-ever headline tour, playing highly successful shows throughout Europe and the UK.

Rare unreleased Torn Boys music '1983' sees light of day

'1983', the first-ever release from Torn Boys, the early '80s post-punk quartet from Stockton, California featuring Jeffrey Clark, Kelly Foley, Duncan Atkinson and a 19-year-old Grant-Lee Phillips, is out. This 10-track archival release from Independent Project Records features almost all existing tracks from the band.

The comprehensive set of rare, unreleased studio and live tracks documents the short but eventful life of Torn Boys, a group comprising future members of Shiva Burlesque, Gary Young’s Hospital and Grant Lee Buffalo.

Formed in 1982 by Jeffrey Clark (vocals, electric guitar) and Kelly Foley (vocals, acoustic guitar) and disbanded by late 1983, Torn Boys lived out their one-and-a-half summers fusing dreamscape lyricism with ultra-80s synth rhythms and Fripp-meets-Carl-Perkins electric guitar textures, leaving behind a scant recorded legacy before dissolving.

Brotality drops single 'Black Abandon' on wave of social media acclaim

New York metal band Brotality have released their newest single 'Black Abandon'. The new single shows the band at their best, mixing classic thrash metal together with modern melodies, progressive grooves, and bouncing riffs, culminating in a refreshingly energetic and compelling track that is sure to leave listeners coming back for more.

Brotality recently made a splash on Instagram when they posted a Reel of a performance of their track 'Nosedive' they held in a lecture hall. The post has over 60,000 likes since it's original posting.

The Maopolski brothers started Brotality in 2016. In a few short years, Brotality has released two EP's, multiple singles, and two full length albums. Their debut full length, Worldwide Desolation, has received countless rave reviews and landed on several Best Albums of 2021 lists.

Taylor Acorn drops new track 'Greener' as Good Enough tour kicks into high gear

Pop-punk star Taylor Acorn has released her brand new single 'Greener'. 'Greener' serves as a follow-up to Taylor’s previous single 'Gray'.

“‘Greener' has to be one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written,” Taylor says. “I wanted this song to capture a feeling of revelation in that ‘grass is greener’ turn of phrase that we all know — and I think the music video does a great job in showcasing it too!! We all go through struggles and tough days where we beat ourselves up emotionally, and then when the going gets good, the grass feels so much greener.”

Taylor recently kicked off the sold-out Good Enough Tour, a month-long US headline tour featuring support from World’s First Cinema. Fans can look forward to hearing 'Greener' live for the first time, along with songs from Taylor’s 'Certified Depressant' EP (2023), as she performs in Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Seattle, Austin, Pittsburgh, and more. Following the US tour, Taylor will be making her way to the UK for Slam Dunk Festival.

Irish sensation Lyra releases 14-track debut album

Irish singing sensation Lyra has released her debut, self-titled album. Written between Los Angeles and London, the 14 tracks express the broad range of her musicality, journeying from the dark and sultry 'Chess' to the ethereal radio hit 'Falling' and the pulsating dance anthem of 'Lovers', all of which elevate her powerful vocals that have given her a one-to-watch status.

“When I began writing music, I aimed for a specific style,” she explains. “But as I started developing, I wanted to write a ballad when I was heartbroken, or an irreverent song when I had a one-night stand, or an upbeat song about going on the lash with my friends and dancing until three am. To me, music should be fun and evoke different emotions, and you’re not going to do that through one sound.”

Other collaborators on the album include Dan Priddy (Bastille, Rag'n'Bone Man), The Nocturns (James Arthur, Maisie Peters) and Phil Cook (Lewis Capaldi, Ellie Goulding).

Bobby Mahoney announces new album 'Another Deadbeat Summer' and new label

Central New Jersey alternative rock outfit Bobby Mahoney has signed with Stevie Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records and has dropped the new single, 'Empty Passenger Seats', which will appear on the band's upcoming label debut, 'Another Deadbeat Summer', out June 14.

Of the track, frontman Bobby Mahoney says, "I initially wrote the first part of 'Empty Passenger Seats' while we were driving home overnight after playing Richmond, VA for the first time. We were driving up the NJ Turnpike as the sun was rising. We had this feeling of accomplishment that we were doing exactly what we should be doing, and that imagery became the bridge of the song.

"I then spent time with our friend Dan Cohen (Creating Clementine) on the riff and the chorus in East Brunswick at my parents’ house. I remember also working on it with the band in a Motel 6 in Carlisle, PA, and listening to rough mixes in a parking lot in Georgia. It is very much a road song, and a good representation of what we do as a band. Geoff Sanoff’s mix and Joe Lambert's master really heightened it sonically, and we are excited for people to hear it, and we are especially excited to be joining the Wicked Cool Records roster!"

Mest drops new single 'When We Were Young'

Beloved Chicago pop-punk band Mest have dropped the music for their brand new single 'When We Were Young (feat. Jaret Reddick from Bowling For Soup)'.

Mest was formed in 1995 with Tony Lovato, his brother Steve, and his cousin Matt in Blue Island, Illinois; a small working-class town on the Southside of Chicago. They released a couple of demos on cassette in 1996 and 1997 and a full length record in 1998. This got the attention of John Feldmann, lead singer and frontman of the punk ska band Goldfinger, who secured them a demo deal with Maverick Records. Seven days after turning the recordings, Maverick signed them to a multi-record deal. Mest released four records with Maverick/Warner Brothers from the year 2000 to 2005, two of which went gold in Japan.

MEST is heading to Europe May 25 through June 9th for a headlining run and festival appearances.

The four-song EP includes unplugged versions of their hit single “Fallin’ With Me,” as well as covers of Michael Jackson’s “Stranger In Moscow” and Oasis’ “Supersonic,” plus a full-length version of “Pretty Vicious.” The latter was uploaded to TikTok in 2021 and garnered 14 million views, making it a viral sensation.

In other news, Struts frontman Luke Spiller recently released his new collaboration with Fossil Group imprint Misfit , a special-edition watch that launches the brand’s Artist Series designs. The limited-run “The Time Is Now” set is described in a press release as a “modern take on a vintage-inspired pocket watch that can be worn as a traditional wristwatch or on a necklace chain.”

Ciara is preparing to tour for the first time since welcoming her daughter Amora Princess with husband Russell Wilson in December.

In an Instagram post shared April 13, the singer, 38, revealed that she is gearing up to hit the stage again — in addition to her mommy duties.

Alongside a photo of herself at the gym, Ciara wrote that she is “trying to lose 70lbs post baby, prepare for a show and tour while breastfeeding, and running my businesses.”

"Shout out to all my mammas out there gettin in, I see you!” she wrote, adding, “ToughSh$t. #MambaMentality🐍.”

Earlier this month, Ciara announced that she — along with rappers Busta Rhymes and Timbaland — would be joining Missy Elliott on tour this summer for The Missy Elliott Experience.

“So excited to hit the road with Missy, Busta Rhymes and Timbaland for OUT OF THIS WORLD Tour!!!” Ciara shared in an Instagram post . “Let’s go!”

Kicking off July 4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the tour is set to hit 24 cities throughout North America , including Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York City and more before wrapping August 22 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

Ciara’s tour preparation will include sharing parental duties with her husband, 35, after they welcomed their baby girl on Dec. 11.

The couple announced her arrival with a joint Instagram post, which they captioned, “We Love You so much!”

Prior to welcoming their latest little one, the couple — who also shares daughter Sienna , 6, son Win , 3, and son Future , 9, whom Ciara had with her ex Future — opened up about embracing the chaos of their full house , telling PEOPLE that it is “nonstop entertainment.”

“These kids are funny,” Ciara told PEOPLE at the time. “Our kids are really hilarious, and obviously the older they get, the more they think they know.”

While celebrating their first Easter as a family of six , Wilson shared several snaps of himself, Ciara and their kids in an Instagram post, which he captioned, “Grateful for Family.”

“Jesus continues to amaze me! HIS Sacrifice for us all,” he continued. “His Grace & Love for us all is more than enough! Forever Grateful for our babies and His Endless Love!”

Colt ford still in icu, cancels summer tour dates, colt ford steadily improving after heart attack ... still in icu, cancels tour.

Colt Ford is doing a little better after suffering a heart attack -- but he's far from out of the woods, and won't be well enough to hit the stage anytime soon ... TMZ has learned.

The country singer's team confirms to TMZ that CF remains in the ICU following his medical episode ... which landed him in the hospital after a show in Arizona.

With that said, his team says Colt is steadily improving -- but it's pretty obvious he isn't doing great, because they've gone ahead and canceled the rest of his touring dates this year.

Colt had been scheduled to do a bunch of shows between now and the end of August -- but we're told all of those are nixed ... and it's in direct connection to his condition. His team says refunds are available at the point of purchase for any canceled dates. Previously purchased tickets will be honored for any rescheduled dates.

Colt's team also shared a message from the singer's family ... who asked for continued privacy during CF's recovery.

ICYMI ... Colt gave no inkling he was feeling unwell during his recent concert at Dierks Bentley ’s Whiskey Row on April 4. As seen in video, he gave an impressive performance over the course of his 2.5-hour set ... before needing medical assistance backstage.

Colt was transferred to the ICU at a hospital in Scottsdale, where he has remained ever since. Colt himself has not spoken out about his condition, prompting countless fans to wish him well on social media.

While we'd been hearing he was stable, the fact he continues to be in the ICU 10 days after the fact is telling -- it suggests he's in bad shape.

Many Scandinavian cities offer brilliant seaside fun. Sørenga in Oslo pictured.

Summer in Scandinavia: five eco-friendly ideas to holiday like a local

The essence of a Nordic summer is to lean into a slower pace of life and embrace nature, from staying in a Swedish summer house to gentle canoe tours in Finland

Oslo: summer in the city

With swimmable harbours in Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and across Denmark’s cities, not to mention plenty of ways to enjoy the sea, from kayaking to urban fishing, there’s often a seaside air to Nordic cities in summer, and especially in Oslo.

One of the best summer activities is to tour the Oslofjord and its archipelago by boat – pack a picnic and set sail in search of hidden swimming spots and colourful island houses. Brim Explorer is one of the best options: an eco-friendly boat company offering silent tours powered by an electric motor (tours from £44). You can also show your love for the water by joining Mad Goats in their fjord clean-up operations every Sunday; participation gives you access to one of their saunas for free and a free burger at the end.

There’s a growing art scene to discover around the harbour. The National Museum is showing an unmissable exhibition by Sápmi artist Britta Marakatt-Labba focused on the environmental struggle and climate issues seen from an indigenous perspective, until August. Afterwards, stroll around the harbour promenade past the opera house, and visit the Munch Museum . There is a new family-friendly beach, Operastranda, by the Opera House this year; it’s also great to swim at the Sørenga seawater pool . Stay at the eco-conscious Oslo Guldsmeden , a Nordic-Balinese hotel in the Vika district from £100 a night.

Explore Denmark ’s sunniest isle

Balka is one of the best beaches on Bornholm.

Bornholm is officially the Danes’ favourite holiday spot (as voted for last year in the Danish Travel Awards). Reachable by bus and ferry or hydrofoil from Copenhagen, it’s known as the country’s sunshine island: Svaneke, a charming harbour town on the west coast, is the sunniest spot in the whole of Denmark.

There’s no need for a car: you can get around relatively easily by bike and bus to explore fishing villages and small towns such as Gudhjem, known for its national cooking competition , and sunny Svaneke, in search of the best ice-cream, smoked herring and locally brewed beer. Bornholm has an artist colony vibe reminiscent of parts of Cornwall and is well known for its ceramics. You can find small workshops and galleries dotted around its villages, and especially in the town of Nexø, where there is a ceramics school. Beaches are wide, sandy and beautiful – especially child-friendly, dune-backed Dueodde, which Lonely Planet recently listed as one of the 20 best beaches in Europe .

New this year, Eco Beach Camp offers glamping from about £150 a night (sleeping two to four) on the beach just steps from the island’s Michelin-starred Kadeau restaurant, known for its focus on hyper-local, sustainable food. Or rent a summer house through firms including Novasol and Dancenter where rates start from about £300 for a week’s stay. It’s expected that you’ll bring basics with you, including bed linen.

Norway’s Arctic hiking route

The Nordlandsruta takes in a magnificent array of Norwegian landscapes.

Culture and nature come together on Norway’s longest hiking route this summer. The 400-mile Nordlandsruta , which runs along the Norwegian-Swedish border, will be joining in the celebrations to mark the Arctic city of Bodø’s year in the spotlight as one of 2024’s European Capitals of Culture. There are a range of artist-led events in cabins along the trail, and activities include poetry and portrait workshops and a mobile perfumery making scents from the herbs that hikers pick along the route.

Evening entertainment includes campfire cooking, improv theatre and Sápmi lassoo throwing. It also plays into another key Nordic travel theme: friluftsliv , a love of the great outdoors. Norwegians love to hike and there is an extensive network of trails, with hiking cabins along them, across the country.

It’s a beautiful hike – whether you’re in the region for the celebrations or not – passing through the Arctic Circle, Laponian Area world heritage site , national parks and Sápmi cities. From meadows filled with wildflowers to snow-capped mountains, reindeer-herding plateaux and raging rivers, it has all the drama you’d expect of this northern landscape. There are 43 unstaffed huts on the route – you’ll need a key from Norwegian trekking organisation DNT to use them.

To walk the whole route would take around six weeks, but it’s broken down into eight smaller stages for those with less time. For ramblers with an eye on reindeer herding and Sápmi husbandry, the 57-mile stretch from Raudlia to Susendalen treks across two valleys and past the hat-shaped Hatten mountain while the 45-mile section from Bolna to Umbukta skirts the sacred Sápmi mountain of Auronasen, silver mines and a glacier. Weekend hikes along the trail are also possible from Narvik and Bodø.

Finland’s peaceful waterways

Kainuu is one of the most tranquil regions in Europe.

If you like lakes, islands and trees, Finland is the place for you – it is the most forested country in Europe and has more bodies of water than any other country in the world . In the Kainuu region in the east of the country, it’s easy to get away from the crowds for pure immersion in Nordic nature.

Nature Travels offers self-guided canoe tours in the region where you can camp wild along the route, fish for your supper and go at your own pace. The pick of the bunch is a remote adventure on the Tar Route (from £154 per person, for three nights/four days, based on two people, including all equipment and transfers to start point), the historic route once used to transport tar to the Baltic Sea. Instead of tar, your cargo will be just yourselves, your tent and enough food for a four to eight-day tour of quiet waterways, short and easily bypassed rapids, and protected islands.

Along the route you might spot moose, foxes, owls or even eagles. Stop to fish for your dinner, cook it on an open fire and retire to a lean-to shelter or tent in the evening. Look out, too, for island saunas, dotted along the route, where you can ease the tension in your back and arms after a hard day’s paddle. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent: Finland’s forests are known for their pesky flies.

This route commonly starts from Kuhmo, accessed by train and bus from Helsinki, while Helsinki itself can be reached by ferry from Stockholm if you prefer not to fly.

Stay in a Swedish summer house

Landsort village on the island of Öja.

It’s traditional in this part of the world to spend at least part of the summer in a “summer house” (actually more of a simple cabin) in nature. The essence of summer house life is leaning into a slower pace of life: read a book under a tree, bake a cake, a gentle walk. It’s about living in harmony with nature, too, and embracing the joys it offers, including sea swimming, fishing, hiking and boating.

The Stockholm archipelago is one of the most accessible and popular summer house destinations. Access is via one of the many public ferries (one-way trips from the city pier cost up to £14 depending on the location). It’s as easy as taking a bus.

The region is protected by the Archipelago Foundation , which preserves public access to land and water in the area, and has a wide range of characterful accommodation spread all over the islands. They include a 19th-century former customs house on the remote and rocky island of Huvudskär, remade into a rustic youth hostel (room rates from £186 for a four-bed room), as well as summer cottages on the activity-packed southern island of Utö, where two-person cabins start at around £338 for a week in high season.

Summer cottages usually require you to bring bed linen. Depending on which island you choose, you might need to bring all your supplies for the week too. Peak season for Scandinavia is typically July – travel in August for slightly reduced rates.

Travel | day of protest: crowds block golden gate bridge, i-880 in oakland, travel | everything you need to know about traveling in the summer of 2024 .

Summer travel in 2024 will be expensive in every way, but even more so if there's a Taylor Swift show in town when you are. (Illustration by Aren Elliott)

Summer travel in 2024 will be “expensive in every way,” says Katharine Nohr. And she should know.

She’s planning a two-week adventure to Europe in June, which starts with a marathon flight from Honolulu to Zurich, where she’ll speak at a conference. Then she’s hopscotching across Europe — to Vienna, then on to the Olympics. She’s made plans to be in Nantes, France, to watch a soccer game, Lille for basketball and Paris for gymnastics, boxing and swimming.

All told, it’ll set her back five figures despite her best efforts, which include flying economy class and staying in the lowest-priced hotels.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

“The trip is pricey, even with my efforts to economize,” says Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu. “But it’s a once-in-my-life adventure.”

Summer travelers are pursuing exciting, expensive vacations

Nohr is part of a wave of travelers that are making big plans for this summer. The itineraries are exciting — and expensive.

Pretty much every barometer of travel intent is up for the summer travel season. Inflation and unemployment are low, and consumer sentiment and curiosity are high, fueling an unprecedented interest in travel during the summer of 2024.

“Bookings are rising,” says Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. “Unfortunately, hotel, tour, and air prices are not falling. So, if you plan on hitting the road this summer, make sure you are willing to splash some cash.”

Travel companies say they’re overwhelmed with summer reservations.

“The travel economy is booming,” says Joe Ialacci, owner of Yacht Hampton Boating Club, a company that rents yachts in Sag Harbor, N.Y. He’s seeing a 40 percent increase in rentals this summer compared to last year as Americans shift some of their vacation dollars to domestic destinations.

Prices aren’t the only thing trending higher. People’s expectations for their summer vacation are also higher than at any time since the pandemic, says Sangeeta Sadarangani, CEO of Crossing , a multinational travel agency headquartered in London.

“They’re embracing the unknown,” she says.

And one of the great unknowns is travel prices. How much higher will they be?

What will prices be like this summer?

It depends on where you’re going. There’s good news if you’re traveling within the U.S.: flights and hotels are a little less expensive than last summer. But they’re rising elsewhere. Here’s the breakdown:

Airfares are mixed. Domestic roundtrip airfares for summer are averaging $325 per ticket, which is down 5 percent from last year, according to the travel platform Hopper. Flights to Europe are cheaper, too. They’ve fallen 12 percent from last year to $1,012. But flights to South America are up 4 percent and flights to Canada have risen 5 percent. You’ll pay an average of $759 to fly south of the border and $430 to head north.

U.S. hotel rates are down. Domestically, they’re down 7 percent to an average of $304 per night. Internationally, they’re up 2 percent to $314 per night, according to Kayak.

Car rental prices are rising. Average domestic car rental rates are up 10 percent this summer to $113 per day, according to Kayak.  Last summer, rates dropped 14 percent after the car rental shortage ended. Internationally, rates are up 3 percent to an average of $88 per day.

But you can avoid the high prices with a little strategic planning, experts say.

What to avoid this summer

American travelers are becoming more predictable in their summer vacation choices, says John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Group . Immediately after the pandemic, they embarked on “revenge” vacations to far-flung locations. Now they’re returning to more conventional vacations.

“We continue to see U.S. travelers heading back to the more traditional locations across Europe this year, like London, Rome, Athens and Munich,” he says.

But there are places that will be exceptionally busy — and exceptionally pricey — this summer.

Paris during the Olympics. The Olympic Games are taking place in Paris this summer. Rooms are more than double the normal rates. which is typical of the Olympics. Paris is already crowded with tourists during the summer, so you can probably imagine what it will be like with the Olympics. Zut, alors!

Taylor Swift is touring Europe this summer. Prices will be higher and the crowds will be denser. “If you aren’t planning to attend one of her concerts, I recommend planning around those European cities when she’s there,” says Betsy Ball, co-founder of Euro Travel Coach . (Want to know if your schedules overlap? Here’s Taylor Swift’s concert schedule .)

Other big summer events. Even if you steer clear of Taylor and the Olympics, you’re still not out of the woods. There’s the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany in June. There’s the Tour de France in July, which begins in Florence and finishes in Nice. France is also hosting the Paralympic Games in August and September, which will take place in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Bordeaux.

When is the best time to book a 2024 summer vacation?

Since this is going to be a busy one, the sooner you book, the better. Hopper recommends buying your airfare two to three months before your departure for domestic flights, and for international — well, it’s probably too late to get that rock-bottom fare. If you’re reading this in April, you can still find something for late August or early September, according to airfare experts.

As always, you can save money by booking a flight for midweek instead of on the weekend — and, of course, by keeping far, far away from the big travel holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Also, if you’re going overseas, remember their holiday calendar is different. For example, half of Europe shuts down during August for summer vacation. It’s worth a look-up, otherwise, you could face some real disappointments.

Strategies for traveling better during the summer

One tactic that consistently works is splitting your getaway into two sections. Take that required summer vacation with your family somewhere less expensive during the high season. Then, wait until shoulder season for the big trip.

That’s what Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, is doing during the summer of 2024. It’s a road trip across the northern U.S. by motorcycle — New York to Washington State and then back east through Canada.

Then he’s heading to Amsterdam in September for a 23-day European river cruise. He says the late summer getaway will be costly, but he doubts fares will fall anytime soon. “So price be damned,” he adds.

With hotel rates rising in some places this summer, this is the right time to consider alternatives. Monica Fish, a writer from Glen Rock, N.J., is headed to Ireland to catch one of Taylor Swift’s performances. She says hotel rooms in Dublin are overpriced, if they’re even available. But Fish found an affordable vacation rental.

“We just had to book it farther in advance than we normally would,” she says.

Go ahead, follow the crowds this summer

I’ll be following the crowds this summer. I’m planning to rent an apartment for a month in Switzerland with Blueground, a long-term apartment rental company. Then I’m crashing on a friend’s sofa in Spain, then heading to Sweden to see other friends and visiting my brother in Finland. Yes, travel writers know people everywhere.

But don’t follow the crowds off a cliff. There are places even I won’t go. I might take the four-hour train trip from Zurich to Paris in June to check out my favorite patisseries, but I wouldn’t go anywhere near the City of Lights during the summer games in July unless I made a reservation a long time ago.

And Taylor Swift? Puh-leeze. I’m more of a jazz guy.
