sturgill simpson australia tour

Sturgill Simpson is coming out of pseudo retirement to act as one of the headliners of the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco, CA, August 9-11. He will also be joined by the most legendary lineup of his backing band, including guitarist Laur Joamets, Kevin Black on bass, and Miles Miller on drums. It will be Sturgill’s first full performance in three years, and even longer since he went on a full tour. Kevin Black was one of the secondary members of Sturgill’s first band called Sunday Valley before following him along on his solo career through the High Top Mountain era. Black currently tours regularly with Margo Price. Laur Joamets joined Sturgill during the Metamodern Sounds era, and quickly set the country music world on fire before a falling out with Sturgill after their legendary performance on the Grammy Awards in 2017. Laur has played with numerous other Nashville-based projects since. Miles Miller continues to act as Sturgill’s bandleader, and launched a solo career in 2023 with his debut album Solid Gold produced by Sturgill. The announcement comes after a morning of wild speculation swirling around the Sturgill Simpson camp. On Monday, April 22nd, a countdown clock appeared on the home page of Sturgill Simpson’s website, counting down to 10 AM on Tuesday. However, the clock wasn’t set for a specific time zone, and it ended up being 10 AM Pacific that the announcement was revealed. Whiskey Riff and others went scrambling when they thought the countdown clock was simply a troll. Nonetheless, some remain a little disappointed that the Sturgill Simpson announcement wasn’t a more extensive tour, or the announcement of new music. But Sturgill has promised that his solo music career is pretty much done. Also, Outside Lands is very music an indie rock affair. Attendees will get the opportunity to see Sturgill perform alongside acts like Strfkr, Ayybo, Cmat, and Badbadnotgood. The only country-adjacent acts on the massive bill are Charley Crockett, Paul Cauthen, and Katie Pruitt, probably making it hard for some country fans to pull the trigger on tickets for a show that they won’t know most of the names on. Post Malone is also scheduled to make an appearance as part of a “Special Country Set.” Perhaps it will be cool, but so far, Posty’s “country” foray with Hardy and Morgan Wallen has been a bit deflating. Similarly, folks should know by now to not get overhyped about Sturgill Simpson news after earlier this month, a simple “Coming Soon” message appeared on the website, followed by the announcement of a 10th Anniversary edition on his landmark album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music . Nonetheless, the reunification of his old band have some speculating that Sturgill could announce further tour dates soon. Sturgill stated quite plainly that his last album  The Ballad of Dood and Juanita  (2021) would be his final original album as a solo artist, fulfilling a five album commitment he made to himself. Simpson has left open the door of perhaps forming a band in the future, and has collaborated with other artists since. He also occasionally produces albums, though that output has been spotty over the last few years. Meanwhile, Sturgill Simpson continues to dabble in acting, appearing in Martin Scorsese’s latest film  Killers of the Flower Moon  in 2023, as well as the science fiction film  The Creator . He also appeared in the HBO-based series  Righteous Gemstones  in 2023. Outside Lands tickets go on sale Wednesday April 24 at 10:00AM PT at  www.sfoutsidelands.com .

Post Malone covered a Sturgill tune so wouldn’t be surprised if he made an appearance with Sturgill. If that’s the case, it’ll be cool to check out on YouTube afterwards. I’m not a fan of Post’s music, but he seems like a genuine music fan and I’ve liked seeing him cover Dwight and Sturgill in the past.

' src=

Definitely wouldn’t be shocked if Sturgill appears with Post Malone at this fest, or if Post’s involvement somehow is the reason Sturgill was booked.

' src=

I like the fact this dude just wants to do his own thing. I respect it. He’s very annoying though. Oh well, we’ll always have the first two albums, I guess.

' src=

What about him do you find annoying? That he stopped doing the Waylon Jennings tribute albums? I am honestly very curious. I wasn’t much of a fanboy until Dood and Juanita. Then I went through his catalogue backwards and think he is the shit. Sailor is one of my favorite albums ever.

' src=

Well, to clarify, I’m a huge fan of the guy. I love his records. I think the first two, “Dood…” and the Childer’s albums her produced are all timeless classics. I loved the grass records, I thought they were brilliantly produced, picked, packaged and put together. I like the other two albums as well – I was an early supporter of the Dap Kings, so it was great to hear that experiment on “Sailor’s…” and Sound & Fury is a certified 80s rock banger too.

I do think his attitude stinks. As I said, I respect his decisions as an artist and a man, but I’ve seen shows of his where he’s phoned it in and then turned on the audience for it. I have read him being dismissive towards people he’s worked with in the past. He’s cancelled tours, not re-booked, but then turns up at Grateful Dead tribute shows in Mexico and this thing in SF… Okay, maybe he doesn’t want to hack it out on the road, maybe he would rather do acting that get back in the studio, that’s fine. That’s his choice. I just find that a bit annoying. Especially when you see how hard others work in the business.

Other opinions are available.

' src=

It might be annoying but if I could wrap up my career today, know my family would be supported and children left with enough, and only show up as a “consultant” every now and then…. I’d sure as shit do it

Yeah, The putting on shitty shows thing does suck. I try to give him the benefit of the doubt and think about what dealing with a bunch of entitled fu manchus for fans would do to a guy’s attitude. Thanks for the reply.

Yo, devil it’s me your best friend.jk I love your name. I appreciate all of u. I played with John Simpson for a few years before Sunday Valley. 2 things i would love people to know is, we both felt hopeless and never dreamed we would be successful.anyone who feels like they born be a musician, his story is proof that there is hope, just don’t give up.2nd thing is we looked for singer for our group for at least a year before he said he was gonna try to sing for us and I was cool with that.before that we sang funny songs and we were trying to be a funk jamband.when he finally serious, I had my eyes closed and I thought it was the ghost of Waylon lol. To watch his success, I need a therapist.lol. He also is hilarious.im glad the Waffle House song let people see that. When it said putting the band back to I was hoping it was me lol. One day, if we do, I’ll make him do sailor’s guide 2. I agree it’s one of my favorite albums ever. Of all people,I am the most proud of him.we broke up cause he moved and really was a blessing in disguise.we both were forced to become singer songwriters because nobody else would like we needed, despite our lack of confidence and shyness.i just feel like people who haven’t experienced that level of success can’t understand why people do things.i even forgive Axl Rose.lol.sorry for replying

' data-tf-not-load src=

Annoying? Where you thinking of Jason Isbell when you wrote this?

' data-tf-not-load src=

Man, regarding the five-album promise, I think Sound & Fury and Cuttin’ Grass shouldn’t count since those were kinda like side projects or rehashes. But that’s just me being selfish. Exploit the loopholes! Give us more!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Cuttin’ Grass didn’t count on the 5 album trajectory, but Sound & Fury did and despite what the purists think, it is an astoundingly great rock record.

And for as much as I love the first 2 albums “Sailor’s Guide…” is far and away my favorite Sturgill album and he was at the peak of his powers as a live act during this time!

Ok, you’re right, I miscounted. But that still maybe leaves room for one more!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Yeah Sound & Fury aged so well for me. I regularly listen to it in the gym. That album fucking rocks.

' data-tf-not-load src=

One thing this festival lineup does suggest is wider acceptance of Country music. Even as these types of festival have trended from being indie rock to become more eclectic multi-genre festivals, country music has been shut out, the uncool cousin that didn’t get an invite.

Well not anymore, in a year when country is having a moment, its great to see Sturgill, Cauthen and Crockett making the lineup here.

Within the same week Bay Area Country fans will also have Tyler Childers at Shoreline (22,000 – pretty much sold out), and 2 nights of Billy Strings at the Greek in Berkeley.

Like it or not, the coastal cities is where the national media are located, and being invited to these parties is a rubber stamp of coolness that will open the door of opportunity for many more. I won’t be surprised to see Tyler headline Coachella in the coming years.

' data-tf-not-load src=

New traditional country music is the “in” genre for west coast hipsters. You can hear it in faux dives, whiskey bars, and gastropubs all over LA.

I fully understand that the moment you become ‘cool’, in the exact same moment, is actually the moment you start to become uncool.

There are few things more insufferable than an LA hipster.

Turnpike Troubadours just announced co-headlining day 2 of Ohana Festival in Dana Point CA in September with Neil Young/Crazy Horse. Also on the bill: Black Pumas (soul revival), Jenny Lewis (alt country/indie), Cat Power (indie), so yes it’s gone mainstream.

' data-tf-not-load src=

That’s what has me a bit concerned quite frankly. Maybe I’m just old and doubt too much

Festivals like this usually find a few roots or Americana musicians to play. What’s rare is to pull a headliner like Sturgill Simpson, and then book Post Malone to perform a “country” set. I agree there is a greater level of acceptance, or you could also consider it the commercial capitalization on the current popularity of country.

It’s worth noting that a few years ago, Sturgill Simpson would not be considered a headliner for a festival like this. Similar to the Turnpike Troubadours, perhaps absence has made the heart grow fonder, or the organizers had to break the bank to get him, or both. Seeing the massive reception for the news, it appears Sturgill’s stock has grown over the last few years.

Don’t underestimate how disorientating it is for a Bay Area hipster to admit they like “Country”. I still get weird reactions when I tell people thats what I mostly listen to. Avett Brothers, Fleet Foxes, Mumford and the big wave of Americana a decade ago was the gateway drug to this moment.

As a Bay Area fan of Country music, it feels big.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I hear you. I live in the Bay Area too. When I wear my Country Squire t-shirt around here, no one gets it. Sturgill did play HSB years ago. I missed that one, but from the videos, he had a packed crowd.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Hey, I’m a Bay Area hipster and I admit to LOVIN’ country music first thing in the morning every morning! I have no use for Sturgill Simpson tho.

Sturgill damn Simpson is playing his first show in 3 years and Laur Joamets is joining him.

Nothing about that is disappointing to me. Awesome news!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I wish the tickets werent $500. I am spending the summer in Northern California and Id love to go.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Laur is BACK!

' data-tf-not-load src=

As great as Childers, Stapleton, Isbell, Bryan, and whoever else are, Sturgill is still the GOAT as far as I’m concerned of this modern independent country revolution that he helped spearhead. Really hopes he does go on an actual tour sometime in the not to distant future. Awesome to see Laur back too, I didn’t think they’d ever play together again.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I had tickets to see him on the tour with Willie Nelson and he pulled out with his vocal injury. Had tickets to see him on the sound and fury tour and covid happened. I really hope I get to see him one day. He’s such a singular talent you can’t help but want more from him.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I had tickets to see Simpson and Childers before the pandemic cancelled it. It was a bummer to miss that show. However, I did see Simpson at a Salt Lake dive in ~2015 for $12/ticket just before his meteoric rise.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Apparently we lived the same life. Sound and fury at the anthem right? The outlaw tour at merriweather. We just hit a streak of bad luck. It kills me that I didn’t see sound and fury live and at the anthem. That place rocks. I saw Jack white there.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Any chance this reunion gets the ball rolling on getting that album on streaming?

Kevin Black was the only guy who was ever officially in Sunday Valley, and he was a replacement for the original bass player. Laur and Miles came along later. I do think Sturgill should release the Sunday Valley album, but my guess is that this won’t be the impetus.

' data-tf-not-load src=

On November 1st 2015, I watched this very group on the ryman stage during the Living the Dream tour and it was the single best live show I’ve ever attended. I was 100 percent sober but it was pure transcendence. My entire periphery faded out of focus and I’ll never forget the feeling of the top of my head buzzing during certain moments of the set. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I felt my soul pulled out of my body when he played “you don’t miss your water”.

I’d give anything to see them play again. If my wife wasn’t due a week later, I’d probably be buying the plane ticket and traveling to this one.

I was excited to see him and the bluegrass avengers with Willie in charlotte. Not sturgills fault what happened there, but it’s the last time I’ll ever travel for a show like that. At least Willie and Margo were great to see.

Last time I saw him live was the opening night of the good look n tour in Birmingham, and he was at the top of his game. Not as captivating as the intimacy of the ryman show, but they set the stage ablaze that night. Since then, I’ve had tickets to four cancellations and the charlotte no show, but you can’t fault the man for his health and the pandemic sure as hell wasn’t his fault.

I have to remind myself that my favorite artists don’t owe me shit. I’m glad to have all the music and the memories from the 10 shows I saw while he was actively doing his thing. The reunion of the 2015 lineup is the stuff of dreams for me, and truly the birth of a child is the only thing that would stop me from being there. Let’s hope it’s not just a one off.

Also, any word of Bobby Emmett joining the lineup here?

Have not seen anything official about Bobby Emmett being there, but I’d kind of be surprised if he wasn’t, or at least some keys player.

Trigger, are you able to elaborate on the falling out between Sturgill and Laur after the 2017 Grammys? I’ve never heard this before.

I’d rather not, and I really don’t know much more. Laur came at me when I reported that he left Sturgill’s band, and didn’t really say anything more about it then. I’m glad that whatever happened there appears to be water under the bridge so they can play together again.

Understood, thanks Trigger!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I love this lineup!! One of my favorite concerts I’ve ever attended was seeing Sturgill on the Metamodern tourn at The Shed outside of Maryville, TN. His cover of Medicine Springs was truely epic!!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Sturgill was cool for a second, until his incredible ego got in the way. Seeing him in a club with 5 people in attendance, thanks to this site, before he blew up was killer. Just haven’t been interested in a long time

' data-tf-not-load src=

‘Attendees will get the opportunity to see Sturgill perform alongside acts like Strfkr, Ayybo, Cmat, and Badbadnotgood.’ One of the many reasons we’re devoted readers, Trigger.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I swear, most band names today read like someone dumped out a bag of Scrabble tiles.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Not gonna lie, Strfkr is a pretty solid name. And their music ain’t half bad – if you’re into that sorta thing.

badbadnotgood are also a pretty decent band…though nothing like Sturgill (watch him come out of retirement to record an album with them!)

No way he’s getting band together and rehearsing just for one gig. Maybe no tour but prob some more fest dates.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Can only hope for some more shows to be added.

I will say the tour 2014-2015 changed me and my outlook for the future of hard country music. I brought a friend who came along just because he had a night to get out from the family and wanted something to do. He was NOT a country fan. I never seen the term drop jaw so literally illustrated on someone. He now listens to a shit load of good country music.

Seen Sturg 5 additional times and just always an awesome experience. Sailors Guide tour with the horns blew me away as well. Saw that mid-tour when all cylinders were cranking.

' data-tf-not-load src=

So no koozie…? 🙁

I firat saw Sturgill in February 2015 in Grand Rapids, MI. He was initially booked for the tiny front room, known as The Stache, but had absolutely blown up between booking and the show, so it was pushed back to the main stage, known as The Intersection. The show was sold-out, Laurs had just joined and was fire, and the whole night was nearly life-changing. It was one of the first times that I truly believed that country music was “saved” – and that Sturgill may be one of its saviors.

Fast forward to 2018. I’m now living in MO and hear that Sturgill is headlining the Roots N Blues Festival in Columbia. I convince a bunch of friends to go by heralding Sturgill’s shows as an “out of body experience if you like true country music”. Imagine the egg on my face when my “savior” comes out and plays a 45 minute set that is flatter than year old opened Mountain Dew and full of generic blues-rock. My favorite part was him completely removing the “I’m tired of y’all playing dress up and trying to sing them ol’ country songs.” from Some Days. If he was trying to distance himself from true country, he sure-as-hell succeeded.

I know others in the comments may disagree, but I really have zero appreciation and patience for the” I’m only doing 5 albums because I’m an artist” bull. It comes off as way too hoity-toity for my tastes. I much prefer the Warren Zevon approach, and though I can’t remember the exact quote, said something along the lines of “I’m a performer, paid to entertain”.

' data-tf-not-load src=

“Going forward, I’d like to form a proper band with some people who I really love and respect musically and be a part of something truly democratic in terms of creativity. Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way.”

When you consider the real reason he decided to go with five instead of the reason you made up in your head (“…because I’m an artist.”) it doesn’t sound nearly as hoity-toity.

I appreciate this. The quote really pushes home the fact that he’s doing it as an artist, for artistic reasons. Which truly does support my opinion – or, as you’d say, what I “made up in my head”. So, thank you!

Question for you though, in regards to Sturgill:

Does it taste like rubber covered in goo, as DAC alluded to us all?

Classy comment. Bet you high-fived your inner 13 year old when you typed that one out.

I actually did! But only because you’re not here to share the moment with me.

Just remember, you started this with your shitty “the reason you made up in your head” comment. All because I said, as my opinion/personal taste, that I don’t appreciate Sturgill’s approach and find it pretty prima donna. And I back that up by sharing my opinion that he’s no longer a valid country artist, that he’s the definition of a sellout, and that I no longer support him financially.

Look – I’m done here if you’re done here. If not, I’m happy to talk about it further the next time we’re in the same locale – or perhaps the next SCM meet n’ greet. Just let me know.

“And I back that up by sharing my opinion that he’s no longer a valid country artist, that he’s the definition of a sellout, and that I no longer support him financially.”

This is quite the comment. You called him ‘hoity-toity’ for being to concerned with his art. You said he’s paid to perform so he should perform. And then you follow that up by calling him a sell-out.

I don’t think you understand what a sell-out is if you think it’s a guy who won’t perform for money because he’s too concerned with his ‘hoity-toity’ art.

Bob Dylan: “I think of myself more as a song and dance man.”

' data-tf-not-load src=

Laur played on Miles Miller’s debut album Solid Gold produced by Sturgill so maybe we have Miles to thank for repairing their relationship

' data-tf-not-load src=

This lineup (plus a piano player) cooked on ACL.

' data-tf-not-load src=

“Strfkr, Ayybo, Cmat, and Badbadnotgood.”.

I was pretty confident Trigger had stroked out mid-article. But the interwebs tells me that, no, those are in fact real bands.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Saw CMAT earlier this year. Fantastic live. The recordings are alright, did not prepare me for her. A real character with amazing stage presence.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’ve seen Sturgill in venues large and small, and the far and away greatest live experience I’ve ever had was watching him rock out in GG Park, for free, at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few years back. He played the Sunday night sunset slot and somehow extended 4-5 songs into a full hour+. Just pure effing rock’n’roll.

Outside Lands has a verrrrry different audience — lots of bootie shorts and shitfaced 25 years old. Doubt his presence will change that entirely, given the price point, but he’ll definitely pull a few folks who otherwise would’ve skipped the fest again.

Best thing about Outside Lands (and Hardly Strictly) is that many artists find ways to take advantage of being in SF to do small pop-up shows around the city. One can hope…

LOL. Saying Sturgill “produced a few albums” is a bit like saying Vermeer only painted a few paintings. The output may be limited, but “Purgatory” is a masterpiece. One of the all time greats.

The comment about producing albums reflects that Sturgill has only produced a few albums recently when I think some folks thought that after he stopped releasing his own music and touring, his production output would perhaps increase. Yes, he’s produced some important albums, but that’s sort of a topic in itself. It in no way was meant to diminish Sturgill as a producer.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I have never understood the fuss about Sturgill’s music. I think him not thing special and over rated by some. Some good songs amongst his albums. Each to their own but there are many much better artists around than him. I have just not been able to get into his music. I for one am not unhappy if he releases nothing else. It would be interesting to see if he is better live. maybe then, I would get the fuss.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I saw him shortly after he won a Grammy and got rid of much of his band. He was solid, but it seemed like he’d have rather been somewhere else. Since I paid good money to travel to that venue, it left me feeling like I had rather have been somewhere else, too.

Ain’t nothing to Sturgill Simpson’s music that Waylon Jennings hasn’t done better – so opines this here commenter.

' data-tf-not-load src=

…omg, the world stood still – we are just not quite sure at what time exactly.

' data-tf-not-load src=

He just announced 5 more records..Then he’s done:)

' data-tf-not-load src=

Posty and Sturgill could definitely be performing together. There are videos of post covering sturgill on YouTube, including an incredible full-band cover of IFWIYCHTC.

' data-tf-not-load src=

More Indie than anything country-adjacent musically (despite the name of their new album), but Medium Build opened a couple of Tyler Childers’ recent shows.

I’d pay to watch them again — the lead singer was a “leave it all on the stage” style compelling performer that made him a good fit with Childers despite the difference in musical styles.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Y’all act like the folks writing songs owe you something, let alone getting out and touring the country performing them for you. If its so easy, why don’t you do it?

Spoken as someone who has done countless Econoline Van tours, written songs from the heart just to have them thrown in the trash by folks who “didn’t hear the single”.

The heart pulls the folks on stage in directions they might not otherwise want to go. Reading the comments here is an education, that’s for sure. Sturgill and others like him are a gift that aren’t appreciated enough. God bless him for following his own path and lets just appreciate what he has been willing to share with us. Isn’t that enough?

Sturgill Simpson will no longer play Bluesfest or sideshows this March.

Country singer Sturgill Simpson has cancelled his Australian tour, which was to see him play Bluesfest as well as headline dates in Sydney and Melbourne.

The tour was to be Simpson's first Australian visit and comes as a blow to fans of one of modern country music's most exciting artists. His 2014 album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music attracted rave reviews upon its release, drawing comparisons to the likes of Waylon Jennings and praised for his gritty, occasionally psychedelic take on the country genre.

Video: YouTube

A statement from the Paradigm Talent Agency, which represents Simpson, stated "circumstances beyond his control" as the reason behind the cancellation.

"Due to circumstances beyond his control, Sturgill Simpson must regrettably cancel his upcoming dates in Australia and New Zealand, including his performances at Australia's Bluesfest as well as New Zealand's inaugural Auckland City Limits. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate everyone's understanding.

"For the two headline performances in Sydney @ the Metro Theatre on March 22 and Melbourne @ 170 Russell on March 23, full and complete refunds will be made at point of purchase.

"Sturgill looks forward to visiting and performing in Australia and New Zealand in the near future. Thank you again for your kind understanding."

Simpson was to play the following shows:

Tuesday 22 March – The Metro Theatre, Sydney

Wednesday 23 March – 170 Russell, Melbourne

STURGILL SIMPSON IN CONCERT:

Country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson stays true to his Appalachian roots with his no-frills singing style and boot-stomping live shows. His rocking sound pays homage to country outlaws like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but never feels like imitation -- Simpson's cerebral lyrics and psychedelic production touches keep the music firmly grounded in the present. Whether he's extolling the virtues of a "Life of Sin" or playing his unique cover of When In Rome's "The Promise", Simpson always impresses with his authentic vocals, smart songwriting, and unbeatable energy on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sturgill Simpson was born and raised in Kentucky, where he began playing the guitar at age eight. He formed the bluegrass band Sunday Valley in 2004, releasing an album and touring with the band before relocating to Nashville to pursue a solo career. He self-released his debut album High Top Mountain in 2013, receiving praise from critics for his updated approach to the classic outlaw country sound.  His sophomore album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music followed in 2014, expanding both his lyrical range and sonic palette with heady explorations of the human experience and an array of psychedelic production flourishes. A passionate performer with a genuine country rock sound, Sturgill continues to do Kentucky proud on his unforgettable concert tours.

Come to the sherman theater in stroudsburg pa! Intimate venue. Really cool place.

Doesn’t even show when actually even books one

Went to outlaw festival and paid good money for 8th row up front and he didn’t even come out said his voice wasn’t right yet willie Nelson had to have help walking out to his stool at like 80 years old and did extended set to cover for arrogant sturgill. Sturgill Simpson is a country singer born in Jackson, Kentucky, U.S who was born on June 8th 1978. Since his debut in 2013 he has released two studio albums and is widely agreed to be one of the most promising new talents in alternative country.

Even though Sturgill Simpson first picked up the guitar at the age of eight years old, he is not one of the current breed of popular musicians barely old enough to drive. Quite the opposite in fact, Simpson lived enough for two lives before he became a musician as a full-time career, enrolling in the U.S Navy at the age of 19 and spending three years deployed everywhere from Tokyo to his native Kentucky. In fact, it was his time spent in the Navy that convinced him that he wanted to spend the rest of his life playing music, and in 2004, he formed his first real band, the bluegrass combo Sunny Valley. Despite his best efforts, Sunny Valley weren’t to be, and in the mid-200’s he left the band and took a job in a freight-shipping yard in Salt Lake City, Utah. Music was still in the back of Simpson’s mind though, so he wrote songs and performed at as many open mic nights as he could find the whole time.

Come 2013 he had enough material and drive to self-finance and self-release his first album “High Top Mountain”. It was a critical smash, with comparisons to the immortal Waylon Jennings coming from everyone from Allmusic to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. The album was enough to secure him a record deal with Loose Music, and since then he’s remained one of the most exciting talents in modern country music. His second album “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music” sold over a hundred thousand copies after appearances by Simpson on David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon, and he has the world of country music at his feet. For that, he comes highly recommended.

Sailor or Savior? Sturgill Simpson Impresses at The Vogue

It was St. Ambrose in 374 AD that originally said ‘First attested in medieval Latin si fueris Rōmae, Rōmānō vīvitō mōre; si fueris alibī, vīvitō sicut ibi’ (if you should be in Rome, live in the Roman manner; if you should be elsewhere, live as they do there).

Some 1,674 years later ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’ is simply summed up with ‘when in Rome’...

Thursday night marked the first of two consecutive nights that Jackson, Kentucky native John Sturgill Simpson graced the legendary Vogue Theatre.

Simpson, haven clearly taken St Ambrose to heart walked on stage sporting a blue denim shirt in conjunction with blue denim jeans; better known as the Canadian Tuxedo.

Simpson, or ‘Stuuuuurgill’ as the bellowing gentleman in the balcony (house left) drunkenly yet affectionately continued refer to him as throughout the evening, played a very complete and well rounded two hour set.

The humble Simpson has been afforded some luxuries since his last stop-off at The Vogue Theatre back on December 7th 2014, the most notable being the now six-piece band that accompanies the rising star.

Standing centre stage in the middle of a musical semicircle the 5’9 Simpson was complemented by an elaborate often Garth Hudson (The Band) sounding keys section to his right, a mild mannered electric guitar player just behind him, who was flanked by a trombone player, a saxophonist, and a trumpet and bass guitar player respectively.

Amidst the sea of cheers and adulation directed at Simpson, the Grammy nominee launched into his first song of the night, crowd favourite “Long White Line”; from the Metamodern Sounds in Country Music LP. Very quickly showing the control in his voice and the contrast with which he can emote, “Long White Line” took a detour and unapologetically delved into a few minutes of Led Zeppelin’s 1971 closing track from their album IV, “When the Levee Breaks”.

With the aforementioned horn section backing up the outlaw country artist, it allowed the layers and texture required for Simpson to achieve a proper representation of his latest album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth to flourish.

As on most of the dates on The Sailor’s Tour, Simpson front-loaded much of the set with tracks from his first two albums High Top Mountain and Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, respectively.

At about the hour mark, or roughly half way through his often two hour long set, Simpson switches gears and focuses on the sentimental and emotional third album released on April 15th, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.

With 37 down and 35 more dates to go, Simpson is just past the halfway mark on the staggering 72-date world-tour he has embarked on. Simpson’s tour saw him depart from Austin Texas on May 05 and won’t see him back home to his wife and boy in Nashville until he has completed the second of his two Fox Theatre shows in Oakland on November 20th.

Opting to play two shows in many of the cities he and his cohorts travel to on this tour, Vancouver is set to prove no different.

The infamous Vogue Theatre plays host to Sturgill Simpson again tonight, adding yet another to the long list of legends some 75 years strong that have performed on the city’s most decorated stage.

No stranger to any genre The Vogue Theatre’s rich history in country music continues on Saturday night with whom many call the greatest songwriter in country music history, Steve Earle alongside Shawn Colvin. Having had country music’s best like Willie Nelson, Terri Clark, Bonnie Raitt and Keith Urban all step booted foot on The Vogue stage, and with the anticipation of so many more artists to come this year, The Vogue Theatre is as happening as it was back in April of 1941 when they invited Dal Richards on stage to be their first ever musical act.

While at 38 years of age and widely considered a savoir of sorts for country music purists enraged with the current tidal wave of pop-country nonsense, Simpson, along with Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon), Hank III, Scott H. Biram and a handful more have be looked at to assume the mantle and take country music back to its outlaw roots. With performances reminiscent of the late Merle Haggard such as the one witnessed last night by Sturgill Simpson to draw from, it gives me reassurance that real country is still alive; and with any luck just building the strength to come back and reassume the saddle over whatever you call that twang-pop the rest of Nashville is currently shoving down our gullets.

Tuesday 28th January, The Forum, London. Sturgill Simpson. After a stunning five star gig a little over four years ago where Sturgill and his band delivered a faultless lesson in country rock I wasn’t going to miss this one tonight. Even though I moved to a new house today my lovely wife gave me the green light to attend. She’s a keeper for sure.

What’s different this time from his previous tours is these are the first shows since Simpson released his ZZ Top meets Pink Floyd meets Daft Punk opus ‘Sound and Fury’ last year. Expectations levels are high to see how these new songs come across. Purists will say he’s lost his way and this isn’t country. What this is, is an artist at the top of his game not afraid to take risks with new sounds but at its heart these are still country songs.

It’s a slow start with ‘Brace for Impact’ and a cover of Derek and the Dominoes ‘Bell Bottom Blues’ kicking us off while the sound guy finds the right balance, the crowd wakes up and then we are off. What follows is two hours of a band at the peak of their creative curve playing effortlessly as one, instinctively following each other as they settle in for some elongated jams and rockin out like the proverbial ba$tard$. The set tonight spans his whole back catalogue with the usual sprinkling of covers, taking in rock, country, disco, folk, punk and of course something for the ladies.

The new song segments are stunning which allow Bobby Emmett on keys to really showcase his talents and Miles Miller on drums and Chuck Bartels on bass don’t stop in providing that driving rhythm through each song. There is little rest bite over the two hours and they could probably have played for another two.

On a night of highlights the new song segment of ‘Ronin’, ‘Remember to Breathe’ and ‘Sing Along’ was exceptional.

With the change in direction on the last album it would be interesting to know how older Simpson fans have taken to this. I am guessing he’s lost a few fans but gained a few too. I did hear someone shout out play some country which is just naïve to say the least. Open your ears and open your minds and embrace music in whatever form and tonight’s show took in many forms. Sturgill and chums deliver another peerless performance and those music fans in the US who will see this tour with Tyler Childers as support are in for a treat.

Come back soon.

Keep on country rockin y’all

Thursday 20th August. Islington Assembly Hall. Sturgill Simpson. So it’s off to the Town Hall where Arsenal parade their recent cup successes. A good sized room and the best toilets of any gig venue in London. A sold out show wait in expectation of a straight country show by Sturgill Simpson and his band. How wrong we were.

Simpson’s stock has risen dramatically over the past year and he references his first show in London a year ago in front of a significantly smaller audience. On a hot sticky night with the band suffering combined trans-atlantic jet colds they get straight down to it. There’s no time for much banter as the band rattle through ‘Water in the Well’ and ‘Long white Line’

What is clear from the off is that this band rocks. They are tighter than a Scotsman’s wallet. Laur Joamets, the Estonian lead guitarist is an understated, no histrionics straight out rock n roll axe man. His provides the perfect electric foil to Simpson’s acoustic. Bass player Kevin Black doesn’t seem to move his hands at all but provides the underlying beat to it all with Miles Miller providing the harmonies and drums with Jeff Crow supplementing the sound on keys.

Highlights on the night range from their cover of ‘The Promise’ but it’s the balls out rocker ‘Poor Rambler’ where the band excel with a lengthy jam and fine soloing on the acoustic guitar from Simpson. Tonight it’s all about the band as a unit and it’s difficult to think of a better group of musicians at the moment. The sound tonight is clean and crisp and the show was as close to perfection as you can get.

Twenty five gigs in this year for me and it’s going to be difficult to top this. Messrs.’ Bingham and Isbell have truly had the gauntlet thrown down if they are going to match tonight.

Keep on rockin y’all

I’d like to think Sturgill Simpon was the reason Red Rocks seemed over capacity on the first dry show of the season, but I knew The Avett Brothers were responsible for selling almost thirty thousand tickets over a single weekend. That being said, Simpson had his fair share of friends in the crowd on Saturday night. He might have only been the opening act, but that didn’t stop him from playing a full, fifteen song set that included highlights from both his albums, as well as a few cover songs. For someone being touted a savior, there was exactly zero ego to be found on the man as he took his place in the center of the famous stage. Giving a quick nod to the growing crowd, he queued up his band with a single pluck of a guitar string, before kicking things off with two of the most straight-forward country songs from High Top Mountain. Following the ‘tears in my beers’, brokenhearted format my mom despised so much, “Sitting Here Without You” and “Water in a Well” poured the foundation for a solid set of true country music. “There’s a moon over me so bright, it lights up my sorrow for everyone to see.” Sure, those words are just another way of saying what’s been said a million times before, but Sturgill’s remarkably candid delivery left no doubt that the sorrow was very real at one time. And at 37-years-old, he can sing “I know sometimes it can seem like my mind belongs to a child that’s grown” as only someone who’s twenties are in the rear-view mirror can. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/07/12/sturgill-simpson-red-rocks-07-11-15/#sthash.HRMOkEVT.dpuf

Cold beer, tequila, Sturgill Simpson - all perfect accompaniments to a hot summer night in Shepherd's Bush. Sturgill has been positioned at the authentic hard-nosed end of country, a (country) mile from the photoshopped, chisel-jawed commercial Nashville scene. He's lived hard, been in the US Navy, worked on the freight trains - you get the picture. So it was something of a surprise to be entertained by a funny, soulful guy with Kentucky charm and a voice that could raise the dead. His latest album is a wonderful mix of love songs ('this one's for the ladies') and songs about "theology, cosmology, and breakthroughs in modern physics". He is a hell of a guitarist - I know because I was with my stepbrother who is one himself - and was wonderfully accompanied on guitar & honky tonk piano by two guys from Glasgow who he'd apparently only met that morning. He mixed it up with a few covers too, including a memorable countrified 'Crying' and one by Lefty Frizzell that wasn't 'Long Black Veil'. We both left wanting more of everything, especially Sturgill. Sadly for my head, the only thing we succeeded with was the tequila...

I've seen Sturgis Simpson five or six times now. The first was at the troubadour in LA, small venue (500) and I was impressed. Crowd was into it and the band was flawless. And I was impressed. From that point in 2014 to his last shows (2015) in California, Sturgill Simpson and the band have become very polished and exceptional live performers. I saw them in San Francisco, Fresno and at stagecoach. My only fear is that Sturgill Simpson will become so big that they will no longer play 500 to 1000 people venues. But that's the price of fame and fortune, and congratulations to them. I hope they prosper, realize and fulfill their dreams and play both big and large venues. I was fortunate enough to see them when he and the boys were still working on the sound. Wherever they do play, small or large venues, they are well worth your hard-earned dollar.

I wrote a great review for this concert. But after a day to digest it and read the set list I think it ended a little premature. Early in the concert we learned he was having some technical difficulties. Because of this he didn't sing the second half of Welcome to Earth pollywog. You could see he was changing guitars because of sound (I thought it sounded great). And when he left the stage at the end, he did not return for an encore. I was told because there was lightning. Charlotte is the south, so heat lightning is pretty normal in the summer months. He played 17 songs. Prior set lists were showing about 20 to 25 songs. I guess I will go see him again. There is nobody around this day and age with his style and talent.

Sturgill Simpson and his musicians own their talent in a high quality crowd pleasing performance that not only features Sturgill as the lead artist, but offers a generous amount of time for band mates to show their skills as well. The clear and respectful connectivity of the entire group provided an outward enthusiastic performance that I am looking forward to seeing again. The Minneapolis concert was last night, and I am still on a music high. I would drive a long way to see this concert again in another city. Waiting for another Minneapolis visit just might be too much to ask my of my patience!

I was very pleased to be able to work in seeing my first Sturgill show while on a quick business trip to Detroit. His show was great and the band was tight.

His banter with the crowd was perfectly timed dry humor and his response was spot on for those that hollered "Freebird"...he gave them one.

The sound was not the greatest at the Majestic, but I am a bit of a "venue snob" being a native Nashvillian.

I can't wait to see him on the Opry later in March!

If there ever was someone that should be made completely welcome on the Opry stage...it's Sturgill.

Was SO looking forward to this show. Think Sturgill's new album is brilliant, and I am big fan. Unfortunately the show was a terrible disappointment. First time in 30 years of concert going that I have walked out of a show. The sound mix was horrendous, and Sturgill's vocal were incomprehensible (though I know his style is to drawl) and too loud. The mix was so grating on the ears, we had to leave. Having seen many live videos on YouTube, I know Sturgill and his band can sound great live. Unfortunately the sound at this DMH show was terrible. :(

Country Singer Returns After 3-Year 'Retirement': Sturgill Simpson Set for Outside Lands

This will be a return to the stage after suffering a vocal hemorrhage and stepping back from music.

By Andrew Roberts - April 28, 2024 05:20 pm EDT

Sturgill Simpson is making his return from his self-imposed retirement to perform as one of the headliners at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco, CA on Aug. 9-11. It will be Simpson's first full performance in three years, reuniting with a favorite era of his backing band for the performance.

Simpson will take the stage with guitarist Laur Joamets, bassist Kevin Black, and drummer Miles Miller. Black was a former member of Simpson's first band, Sunday Valley, before joining him on his solo career through High Top Mountain. Joamets played with Simpson during the Metamodern Sounds era of his career, falling out after a memorable Grammys performance in 2017. Miller is the only constant for Simpson in the lineup, remaining his bandleader and taking on his own solo career.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Where TF is Sturgill Simpson (@wherethefuckissturgillsimpson)

The announcement was preceded by a countdown clock on Simpson's official page, finally revealing itself at 10 a.m. PT due to the concert's locale and just saving it for the last possible moment.

Simpson's return doesn't mean he's back full-time for a tour and a new album. His last album, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita , was called his final original album as a solo artist , fulfilling a commitment he made to himself. He also has been recovering from a hemorrhaging vocal cord he ruptured in 2021.

"I am currently getting the best treatment available and should fully recover but its gonna be a long hot minute before I can return to stage," he said at the time, only months after calling his last album his last.

"I don't want to say I'll never make another record, but this five-album narrative was really clear when I moved to Nashville. My wife really helped me carve that out, in terms of how to go about the beginning, middle and end for each chapter. But then after that, I am not sure," Simpson told Whiskey Riff in 2021 . "I love the studio. I like sleeping in my bed. I like seeing other people succeed. And I really love helping other people succeed-people like Tyler or Margo or Lucette or anybody else who would be willing to work with me."

Despite his movement away from his own music, Simpson has been visible in recent years thanks to his acting roles. He was most recently in Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. He was also in The Creator and made an appearance on Righteous Gemstones on HBO.

Sturgill Simpson Says He’s Hemorrhaged His Vocal Cords, Cancels Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

One week after having to cancel several of his shows, including a multi-evening stint at New York’s Webster Hall, Sturgill Simpson has canceled the remainder of his tour dates for 2021. The country singer-guitarist posted on Instagram that he’d been dealing with severe vocal cord issues that leave his future as a performer uncertain.

“Turns out I did in fact unfortunately hemorrhage / rupture my vocal cords after all,” he wrote, posting a scan of his larynx that showed the injury. “I am currently getting the best treatment available and should fully recover but it’s gonna be a long hot minute before I can return to stage.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sturg⚡️iLL (@sturgillsimpson)

Simpson went on to acknowledge his fans and the tour stops he’d already missed, including Outlaw Music Festival shows in the Atlanta and Baltimore areas, as well as headlining dates to come in New York and at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

“I’m sorry to everyone that had tickets to the remaining shows and to thank everyone that has supported me over the years,” he wrote. “It’s been an incredibly fun, rewarding and educational journey. I played all the venues I dreamed about playing as a kid, met all my heroes, even became friends with most of them, and got to work and play with some of the finest musicians on the planet over the years.”

In August, Simpson released The Ballad of Dood & Juanita , which he speculated would be his final release as a solo performer. “I’d like to form a proper band with some people who I really love and respect musically, and be a part of something truly democratic in terms of creativity,” he told Rolling Stone just before the album’s release. At last week’s Americana Honors and Awards, Simpson’s bluegrass effort Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 1: The Butcher Shoppe Sessions was named Album of the Year.

Outside of music, Simpson has also stepped into acting, appearing in the films Queen & Slim and The Hunter . He’s playing a role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon . As for what lies ahead once his recovery is complete, Simpson is characteristically wry.

“On the bright side, now I can finally really focus on other pursuits and areas of passionate interest,” he said, “like becoming the best hitman I can be.”

Outside Lands 2024 To Host First Sturgill Simpson Show In Three Years

Sturgill Simpson will perform his first solo show in three years at the 2024  Outside Lands festival in San Francisco from August 9th–11th. This announcement comes after the alt-country singer-songwriter dipped his toe out of semi-retirement with gigs alongside members of Dead & Company  and  Margo Price .

Simpson is a bit of an odd man out on the indie-leaning Outside Lands lineup, with  Charley Crockett ,  Paul Cauthen , and Katie Pruitt the only other country artists of note, along with a country set by Post Malone . Sturgill will headline the festival alongside Tyler, The Creator ,  The Killers ,  The Postal Service ,  Grace Jones ,  Kaytranada ,  JUNGLE ,  Chris Lake , and  Gryffin . For his Outside Lands appearance, Simspon will reunite with his most celebrated backing band lineup featuring guitarist Laur Joamets , bassist Kevin Black , and drummer Miles Miller . Tickets for Outside Lands 2024 go on sale on Wednesday, April 24th at 10 a.m. PT here .

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Outside Lands (@outsidelands)

Tuesday’s lineup announcement follows a period of (not unwarranted) speculation among Simpson’s fans. His followers were likely disappointed when earlier this month a “Coming Soon” message on his website amounted to simply a 10th anniversary reissue of his landmark album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music . Then on Monday, a clock appeared on his website counting down to 10 a.m. on Tuesday—10 a.m. PT, it should be noted—which coincided with the Outside Lands lineup revelation.

Simpson stepped away from live performing back in September 2021 when damage to his vocal cords forced him to cancel his tour midway. At the time, Sturgill warned that it’d “be a long hot minute” before he returned to the stage. Coupled with the fact that the month prior Simpson released his fifth and allegedly final solo album The Ballad of Dood & Juanita , it was unclear when fans would see or hear from Sturgill again.

Following his break from the road and release of  Dood & Juanita —completing a five-album promise he made throughout his career—Simpson appeared as a featured guest on songs by Angel Olsen and Diplo (though under the pseudonym Johnny Blue Skies). He also produced albums by Brit Taylor and  Miles Miller in 2023. That same year, he appeared in season three of The Righteous Gemstones and  Martin Scorsese ‘s epic  Killers of the Flower Moon . Simpson even recorded a song for  The Righteous Gemstones , an a cappella cover of “ All the Gold in California “, under the name Brother Marshall and the Choir of Fire which showed his vocal cords were in good shape.

Last year also saw Simpson step back onstage for several high-profile gigs. He made his first live appearance post-injury for a brief one-song spot at  Willie Nelson ‘s 90th birthday celebration at the  Hollywood Bowl  in April. Then in September, Sturgill was included on the lineup for the  Dead Ahead  Mexico destination event featuring members of  Dead & Company ,  Goose ,  Tedeschi Trucks Band , and more. Two weeks after the lineup announcement, Simpson made a surprise appearance at  Farm Aid in Noblesville, IN, where he joined  Bob Weir & Wolf Bros and  Margo Price throughout the evening —two acts also on the Dead Ahead bill. While Simpson’s appearance at Farm Aid was certainly historic and made up for his canceled 2021 appearance, it was ultimately overshadowed by  Bob Dylan ‘s surprise appearance later that same evening, his first trip to Farm Aid in over 20 years.

While down in Mexico in January for Dead Ahead, Simpson got around. In addition to two full-show performances with Bob Weir,  Mickey Hart ,  Don Was ,  Derek Trucks , Susan Tedeschi , Rick Mitarotonda , Margo Price, and others, Simpson made a surprise sit-in with acoustic Goose offshoot  Orebolo . Clearly in good spirits, during his afternoon appearance with Orebolo he even threatened the crowd, “I’m here all week, if I see you I’ll steal  all your weed.”

Sturgill Simpson Returns To The Stage For Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Party, Performs “I’d Have To Be Crazy”

sturgill simpson australia tour

It’s been a minute…

Since the release of his critically acclaimed  The Ballad Of Dood & Juanita   album in 2021, Sturgill Simpson has been relatively quiet. Mostly due to the fact that he has been rehabbing the pipes after a vocal cord rupture, but nevertheless, Stu is back in the spotlight… and that’s always a good thing.

He resurfaced as Johnny Blue Skies on Diplo’s new country/pop crossover project,  Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley: Chapter 2 — Swamp Savant …  which actually rips, by the way. It’s not a country record by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s the kind of pop music I dig, featuring some of the country acts that I love on the vocals.

However last night, Sturgill graced the stage once again (for the first time since his vocal cord rupture to my knowledge) to celebrate Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday.

The two-day event at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, features a star-studded lineup including the likes of Tyler Childers, George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Willie’s sons Lukas and Micah, Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg and many, many more.

Sturgill kicked off his performance with some of his signature commentary, always sure to garner a ton of laughs and applause:

“There’s only one reason I’m not on a beach in South Asia right now and because it’s Willie Nelson’s birthday.”

And then went on to offer some heartfelt praise for the country music legend and pioneer:

“I’m gonna take a minute to say something that I’ve never had the courage to say to his face, and that is that there is only one reason that I ever went to Nashville to make country records and that’s because I grew up listening to country records made by Willie Nelson.

And I wanted to make country records that were outside of the box of what most people think country records can be. I only signed a record deal with Atlantic Records because Willie Nelson made those records on Atlantic. That didn’t work out too good for me, but everything else did thanks to you guys.

I’m gonna sing a song written by a guy named Steve Fromholz that Willie recorded, and this is one of those songs that always resonated so strong with me, I feel like I could’ve written it, it pertained to my life so much.”

He went on to perform “I’d Have To Be Crazy,” which was recorded by Willie for his 1976 record, The Sound In Your Mind.

Sturgill also recorded the song for his debut solo album,  High Top Mountain.

Here’s to the GOAT… the great Willie Nelson. Happy 90th, Willie.

And how about the original from Shotgun Willie, himself:

Willie Nelson Announces New Dates For 2023 ‘Outlaw Music Festival’ Tour

On the road again…

The living legend Willie Nelson announced that he’s adding a slew of new dates to his 2023 Outlaw Music Festival tour, which is slated to kickoff in June. The new shows include openers such as Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros. featuring the Wolfpack, The Avett Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov’t Mule and many more.

Willie says he can’t wait to continue his 90th birthday celebration with such incredible shows this fall:

“I am so thrilled to announce these additional dates for our 2023 Outlaw Music Festival Tour.’

I can’t wait to keep the celebration of my 90th birthday going into the fall with this great lineup of artists, my friends and family, and of course, the amazing fans.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Willie Nelson (@willienelsonofficial)

Willie also released his 98th career studio album I Don’t Know A Thing About Love  at the beginning of March, and it’s pretty damn incredible that he just keeps going the way he does at his age… really,  it’s the stuff of legends, so I guess we shouldn’t really be  all  that surprised, though that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

And it goes without saying, but seeing the red headed stranger live in any capacity is a bucket list show for sure, so take a look and see if he’ll be making a stop anywhere near you on this run.

You can check out the previously announced dates and lineups HERE , and all new dates are listed below.
