Tourists brace for hot summer in Ooty, scorching heat at ‘Queen of Hills’ Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu

Tourists visiting ooty for a cool respite this summer meet soaring temperatures, heat wave alert at isolated pockets over north interior tamil nadu till may 3.

Udhagamandalam, popularly known as the Queen of Hills in Tamil Nadu , does not appear to be a cool respite this summer as a spike in temperature has left the sequestered hill station scorched.

This familiar haunt of tourists recorded its highest-ever temperature of 29 degree Celsius on April 29 and this was 5.4 degrees above the average temperature for Udhagamandalam, says Additional Director General, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, S Balachandran.

The previous all-time high temperature of 28.5 degree Celsius was recorded on April 29, 1986.

The RMC has warned of heat wave conditions at isolated pockets over north interior Tamil Nadu and issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions till May 3.

The meteorological department uses four colour codes – green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action) – for weather warning.

Erode district recorded the highest temperature of 42 degree Celsius while Chennai recorded 38.6 degree Celsius. Light rain has been predicted for the southern districts of Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli.

Tourists visiting the idyllic Ooty for a cool respite this summer were in for a surprise when the day temperature soared.

"The temperature at night was cooler, providing the needed relief to our guests," Balaji, manager at a resort, said.

The hill station, also known as Ooty, the headquarters of Nilgiris district on the vibrant Western Ghats, would receive several hundreds of footfalls when the ten-day Ooty Flower Festival commences on May 10, he adds.

According to police, traffic regulation would be in place from May 1 and there will be 12 designated parking spaces.

The Madras High Court has directed the district collectors of Nilgiris an Dindigul to issue electronic passes (E-pass) for all vehicles entering the hill stations from May 7 to June 30 to monitor the influx of tourists.

On an average, about 11,509 cars, 1,341 vans, 637 buses and 6,524 two-wheelers enter the hill station during the tourist season, while 1,150 cars, 118 vans, 60 buses and 674 two-wheelers enter Nilgiris every day during the non-season period, the state government’s status report said.

According to Ram Kumar, director, Centre for Social Reconstruction, an non-governmental organisation, emphasis should be more on sustainable tourism practices and initiatives to address climate change.

At 29°Celsius, Ooty records hottest 2 days in 73 yrs

Tourists resting under trees on a hot day at the Ooty Botanical Garden, Nilgiris, on Monday

NILGIRIS: Less than five months after the temperature in Ooty fell to 0°Celsius in December, the popular tourist destination recorded a high of 29°Celsius, the hottest the hill station has been in 73 years, on Sunday and Monday. Tourists, however, remain undeterred by the heat as officials prepare for more people to visit the traditional summer holiday retreat in the coming days.

“This temperature rise is not limited to Ooty, or even Tamil Nadu. Such an increase is being witnessed across the country,” S Balachandran of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai told TNIE . On Monday, Erode recorded the highest temperature in TN of 42.6°Celsius, followed by Tirupattur with 42°Celsius. Tirupattur also recorded a temperature deviation of 4.2°Celsius. Other districts that recorded high temperatures include Salem (41.6°Celsius), Vellore (41.5°Celsius) and Karur Paramathi (41°Celsius).

Balachandran noted that the temperature spike has occurred right as the El Nino phase is coming to a close. “The overall rise in temperature across TN clearly signals the importance of protecting the environment by planting more trees and preventing deforestation,” he opined.

‘Hotter days due to climate change’

Even as tourists continue to throng Ooty, workers, plantation and agricultural labourers, are among the worst affected by the unusual heat. V Sivadas from the Nilgiris Environment Social Trust, said these days umbrellas are a common sight in the region, used by tourists and locals alike to escape the scorching heat.

“Since tender coconut water is quite costly in Ooty, we have been advising people to drink barley, sabja or thulasi water instead, and to eat pears,” he said.

‘Poovulagu’ Sundarrajan, founder of Poovulagin Nanbargal and a governing council member of the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, told TNIE that it is time Ooty residents and the rest of Tamil Nadu begin adapting to the new weather conditions by following the heatwave instructions which were issued by the health department carefully, in order to prevent sickness and death.

“The rise in temperature is due to climate change. We appeal to the state and central government to examine human deaths in the summer months and declare the number of heat stroke deaths by examining autopsy reports,” Sundarrajan said.

E-pass for Nilgiris

Chennai: Madras High Court on Monday ordered TN government to introduce an E-pass system for tourist vehicles heading to Nilgiris and Kodaikanal during summer to regulate traffic in the region.
