Big Game Hunting in Tanzania

Huge wilderness areas, abundant with a vast variety of game

Tanzania is traditionally renowned for its exceptional hunting and excellent trophy quality. This country is home to the largest concentration of heavy maned Lion left in Africa, a very healthy Leopard population, vast herds of Buffalo as well as incomparably large varieties of plains game, including Roan antelope, Sable antelope, Eland, Greater Kudu and Sitatunga. Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu and Oryx occur throughout the semi-arid North East and Masai Bushbuck, Red Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck and Suni can be found in suitable high altitude habitat.

Three quarters of Tanzania's land mass is wilderness, most of which is National Park, Game Reserve or Hunting Area. The Wilderness (and the Wildlife it contains) is not fenced. The animals know no boundaries - they move freely in and out of various hunting areas.

Tanzania is a beautiful and varied country with the finest wildlife habitat remaining in Africa today with large wilderness areas of abundant game. The country and terrain vary enormously, from semi-desert in the North East, to open plains and thorn bush in the North; swamps in the North West; to Miombo woodland throughout the country. This unusual diversity creates ideal habitat for a wide variety of wildlife species.

The Classic African Safari Experience

The safari tradition originated in East Africa. Tanzania is a land of distinctions that still evokes this spirit of adventure that first attracted famous hunters, such as Roosevelt and Hemingway to Africa. It offers some of the largest hunting areas in Africa where the game is free to roam in true wilderness.

Our safari camps are incredibly comfortable and luxurious, while still retaining the charm and atmosphere of sleeping under canvas. Telling stories and sipping whiskey around the campfire at the end of a long adventurous day’s hunt, is still a huge part of a traditional Tanzanian hunting adventure with Robin Hurt Safaris.

You will not share your camp with any other guests. There are refrigerators, both in your camps and in your vehicles. All tents are roomy, insect-proof and secure. Your sleeping tent has an attached bathroom with flushing loos, running water and a verandah. Beds are large (7' long) with comfortable mattresses.

Your vehicles are all four-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruisers equipped with winches, gun racks, tools, spares, radios, fridges and first aid bags. There is a radio network between vehicles, between camps and from camps to the RHS base in Arusha.

Exclusive Parks and Conservation Efforts: Tanzania boasts some of the world's most renowned and exclusive national parks, such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. These parks have high park fees that contribute to conservation efforts and limit the number of visitors to protect the delicate ecosystems.

Remoteness and Infrastructure: Many safari destinations in Tanzania are remote, with limited infrastructure like roads and airports. This leads to higher transportation costs, as well as the need for specialized safari vehicles that can handle rough terrain.

High-Quality Accommodations and Services: Tanzania prioritizes exclusive, low-impact tourism. This means accommodations are often limited and focus on providing high-quality, eco-friendly experiences, which drives up costs.

Expertise and Personnel: Safaris rely on skilled guides, experienced drivers, and attentive staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. These professionals command higher wages due to their expertise and the demanding nature of their work.

Limited Competition: The safari industry in Tanzania has fewer operators compared to some other African countries, which can result in less competition and higher prices.

About hunting in tanzania.

Tanzania is considered by many experienced Africa hands to be the crown jewel of Africa’s hunting countries. Not only does it boast a vast game list, but also Tanzania prides itself on its safari traditions, which include well-appointed tented camps and large staffs catering to the visiting hunter. A large country in East Africa covering 365,000 square miles, Tanzania still contains large regions of near-wilderness, such as the Selous Game Reserve and the Rungwa Game Reserve. It has a wide variety of ecosystems, from the Masai Steppe in the northeast, home to gazelles and oryx, to miombo forest in the south and west, home to sable and roan. Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo are well distributed throughout the country. The plains-game species are almost too numerous to list, and include some species that are hunted nowhere else in Africa. Among the most sought-after are eland, Grant gazelle, Thomson gazelle, Coke and Lichtenstein hartebeest, greater and lesser kudu, oribi, oryx, puku, several types of reedbucks, sable, roan, sitatunga, topi, suni, waterbuck, zebra, and white-bearded and Nyasa wildebeest. Tanzania has three classes of hunting licenses. A hunter must choose a ten-day, sixteen-day, or twenty-one-day license, and a larger variety of species are available on the longer licenses. For example, a hunter may hunt up to two buffalo and a variety of plains game on a ten-day license, but must buy a sixteen-day license to hunt crocodiles and waterbuck and a twenty-one-day license to hunt elephant, sable, roan, lion, leopard, oryx, greater kudu, and eland. In addition to the license fee, trophy fees are charged for each species taken, as well as other government fees, which can add significantly to the safari cost. A full-bag safari in Tanzania is not inexpensive by any means, but it is one of the hunting world’s most desired experiences.

What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

A tourist visa for traveling to Tanzania is required and must be obtained in advance of your trip. You’ll need to apply to the Tanzanian consulate in your home country, and will need to supply your passport, flight itinerary, two recent passport-size photos, an application form (filled out and signed), and the required fee, which is $100 for U.S. citizens. Allow several weeks for the process to be completed.

Tanzania is a malaria zone country, and antimalarial drugs are strongly recommended.

You will need to send your firearm details to your outfitter well in advance so the proper paperwork and permits will be ready for you up on arrival. Tanzania recently introduced a new requirement to import firearms for safaris: Hunters must now provide photographs of the firearm and of the serial number for any guns brought into the country. Only three rifles per hunter and 100 rounds per rifle may be imported. Automatic weapons and handguns are strictly forbidden. When hunting dangerous game (lion, elephant, and buffalo), the minimum caliber is .375.

If you intend to borrow a rifle from your safari operator, be aware that if your safari is jointly operated by two companies, only the operator conducting the hunt in a given area may provide firearms. If you plan to hunt with your operators' rifles in Tanzania, make sure ahead of time that rifles are available in accordance with Tanzania's regulations.

Upon arrival

Most hunters fly into either Arusha or Dar Es Salaam. A representative of your outfitter should meet you upon arrival to assist in clearing your firearms. Check with your outfitter to determine if you will need to exchange money at the airport, and be aware that many places in Tanzania do not take credit cards.

Hunts in Tanzania almost always require a charter flight from the city of arrival to the hunting area. Depending on when you arrive, your outfitter may arrange for you to stay overnight in a hotel and take the charter flight the following day, or be driven to the domestic airport immediately to catch your charter flight to camp. On arrival in the hunting area, you will be met by your professional hunter at the airstrip and then driven to camp.

The hunting season in Tanzania begins on July 1 and ends on December 31. Tanzania has strict fair-chase hunting regulations that include the following: No animal may be shot from a vehicle or chased or driven by a vehicle. All hunting must be conducted within the hours of daylight. Female, young or immature animals are not to be hunted.

Most hunts in Tanzania are spot-and-stalk or safari style, with the hunters covering ground either on foot or by vehicle and, once an animal is spotted, completing a stalk on foot. Terrain varies dramatically from relatively flat savanna to rugged mountains, depending on the region of the country you’re hunting. Hunts for certain species require extensive walking; others require very little, so it’s a good idea to ask the professional hunter what to expect.

Dark green or brown clothing is best, as are comfortable, well-broken-in boots with soft soles for quiet stalking. You’ll only need a couple of changes of clothing as laundry is done daily at most camps. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunblock, good optics, and a jacket for cool mornings and evenings.

After the hunt

Tipping is appreciated in Tanzania, and camps in this country tend to have very large staffs with a high level of service, so check with your outfitter in advance regarding how much to bring for tips.

Trophy preparation

Typically, animals are skinned at the safari headquarters and all skins are cleaned and salted; skulls and horns are cleaned and buried in salt. After a couple of days, the skins are hung to dry, cleaned once more, and folded and stored in a skinning shed. Skulls will be cleaned and placed on a rack. Before leaving camp, it’s a good idea to ensure the skulls and skins are properly tagged with the hunter’s name and contact information.

At the end of the season, trophies will be taken to a taxidermist for professional cleaning and dipping, which is required for export. The taxidermist then contacts the hunter for instructions regarding preparation and shipment, and to arrange payment for these services. The taxidermist then contacts a shipping agent, who will handle the permits and shipping to the hunter’s home country, again after contacting the hunter.

Export permits

CITES permits are required for exporting certain species, including lion and elephant, and it is the hunter’s responsibility to arrange for these in advance. In addition, enhancement permits are now required for import of certain animals into the USA. It is important that you are in possession of the relevant permits issued by the county into which you will be importing your trophies, and to be aware that many export and import requirements for these species have undergone dramatic changes in recent years.

The area is easily reached from arusha city about 1:30 hours and 90km by road via almost all-weather roads to Nakotela camp. Between Latitudes: 36.90 and 36.83.The terrain ranges from flat plains to scattered ridges or rows of hills. The elevation ranges from 560m to 2123m above sea level. The majority of the flood plains contain black/cotton soils, but the hills have weak soils that are prone to erosion. If you’re looking for a unique gift, this is the place to be. The majority of the vegetation has adapted well to arid circumstances and recurrent droughts. Bush fires are common in the area, and are typically initiated by livestock herders to fend off pests such as ticks and tsetse fly, as well as to promote green foliage growth for their cattle.

This is your chance to hunt dangerous game in Tanzania in one of the great lion, leopard and buffalo hunting areas in all of Africa!  The full bag safari will take place in central Tanzania on a 1,500 sq. mile concession that borders Ruaha National Park and is part of the Rungwa ecosystem.  All areas that will be hunted are free-range.  This area is wild and your 21 day safari will be similar to Roosevelt’s and Hemmingway’s adventures in Africa.  The area is comprised of typical bush terrain, is generally flat and has one large river running through it.  The camp is located on the banks of this river.

THE FULL BAG SAFARI

This outfitter has had a success rate of 70% over the last five years on mature lions and a nearly perfect record on big leopards.  His clients take fully mature lions that comply with Tanzania’s regulations that only male lions that are 6 years of age or older may be taken.  This is a good area to hunt lions, as there are a lot of lions in this area.  There are also a lot of big leopards in the area and you will experience multiple cats on bait during this safari.  This is the perfect safari to bring a cameraman along on, as both cats will be shot during the daytime hours.  You will cover a lot of ground via the comfortable land cruisers to collect, hang and check baits consistently until the focus is narrowed to one actively feeding trophy male cat.  The outfitter is an expert on the use of trail cameras on bait and these methods will be used to monitor the bait stations for big cats..  The outfitter has a proven track record of helping his clients kill trophy lions and leopards.

There are limited opportunities to take elephant in this area, but if an old legal elephant is encountered, the elephant may be harvested at the PH’s discretion.

Cape Buffalo (3), sable, roan and other plains game may be taken on this hunt.  These animals will be utilized as bait for your leopard hunt.  A list of trophy fees is available below:

THE FULL BAG SAFARI CAMP

Although this is a wilderness hunt, you will stay in a 3-star tented camp.  The lodging will consist of large East African style tents with in-suite bathrooms.  The tents will feature frame beds and mattresses with clean linens and blankets.  The tents also feature windows, rugs and complete floors.  Laundry will be done daily and service staff is on call at all times.  Electrical power is provided by a generator.  Internet and cell phone service are not available in camp.  A satellite phone is available in camp in case of emergencies.

Food will consist of 3 course dinners, picnic lunches and made-to-order breakfasts.  Bottled water, beer, wine and ice are all available and included.

THE FULL BAG SAFARI OUTFITTER

This Tanzania outfitter has been hunting professionally in Africa since 2003.  He is very hands-on and personally conducts more than half the hunts.  His other PH has been professionally hunting for over 20 years and both are highly experienced lion hunters.  You cannot be in better hands that when dangerous game hunting in a remote area with this outfitter.  Their equipment is well-maintained and the staff is well-trained.

GETTING THERE

You will take KLM airlines into Kilimanjaro International Airport.  Your PH will meet you at the airport in Kilimanjaro, where you will be driven an hour and 15 minutes to Arusha.   Once in Arusha, you will overnight in a hotel ($165-$350) and wake up the next morning and drive to the hunting concession.  An overnight stay in Arusha may also be necessary on the day of departure from camp. Charter flights are also available from Arusha to the camp and back.  Prices for an unshared plane run around $4,500.  Possible sharing coordination of hunts can lower this cost.

So what are you waiting for?  Isn’t it about time that you put some majestic trophies in your game room?

Tanzania Hunting Safari Prices, Cost and Packages

Tanzania hunting safaris offer a unique and thrilling experience for hunting enthusiasts. The country is renowned for its vast wilderness, including the Selous Game Reserve and the Maswa Game Reserve, which are home to a diverse range of game species such as elephants, lions, buffalos, leopards, and rhinoceros. These safaris are strictly regulated by the Tanzanian government to ensure sustainable hunting practices, with specific hunting seasons and quotas set for each species.

Tanzania hunting safari prices can vary greatly depending on the length of the safari, the type of animals you wish to hunt, and the level of luxury you desire. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1,500 per day. This typically includes accommodation, meals, professional hunting guides, and transportation within the hunting area. However, trophy fees for animals hunted, taxidermy, and shipping of trophies back home are usually not included and can significantly increase the overall cost.

22 Days Tanzania hunting Elephant Safari

Elephant hunting is very challenging. They require a team of expert hunters and trackers who have been learning how to successfully pursue elephants for years. Endurance and sacrifice are also necessary on elephant hunts. There can sometimes be days and days of tracking and hiking before a shot on a trophy animal presents itself. Bull elephants can grow to heights of up to 13 feet with the largest bulls weighing in at close to 14,000 pounds or 7 tons! They can also live for over 50 years in the wild depending on their diets. Elephants have generally poor eyesight, but they make up for that with sharp hearing and an incredible sense of smell. They also have a high degree of intelligence and a marvelous memory. Achieving a successful elephant hunt is truly an accomplishment worth bragging about. The smallest caliber that can be used to harvest an elephant is .375 H&H, but it is generally recommended that you use the highest caliber rifle that you can accurately and comfortably shoot. The elephant is the biggest land animal on the planet and offers one of the most incredible hunts that can be experienced anywhere.

Total hunt: USD 74,750

Duration: 22 day safari (18 days hunting), 22  days tanzania hunting lion safari package.

Tanzania Hunting Safari Areas

Tanzania has over 200,000 square kilometers committed to wildlife protection covering National Parks, Game Reserves, Game Controlled Areas, Wildlife Management Areas, and Open Areas on village lands. Within this Tanzania offers the highest quality plains game and buffalo hunts, as well as the legendary traditional East African safari experience.

Masailand, northern Tanzania

The hunting concession of Burko is in the heart of Masailand, northern-central Tanzania. This is historically a classic game hunting area, taking in the mountain of Burko and adjoining the Lossimingor hunting concession, famed for its aggressive, mist forest buffalo.

The fauna-rich Masailand savannah, rain forest, and semi-desert habitats make this perfect country for an incredible variety of wildlife, including; Greater & Lesser Kudu, Eland, Oryx, and Gerenuk, as well as Grants and Thomson’s Gazelle, Masai Bushbuck, East African Impala, Harvey’s Red Duiker and Suni.

Two important points with hunting the Masailand area, are that there are no Tsetse flies and, because the area is so close to Arusha, there is no need for expensive air charters to get in and out of camp.

Rungwa, southern central Tanzania

The Rungwa South concession in southern Tanzania borders the Ruaha National Park and Rungwa Game Reserve. It covers over a million acres of stunning pristine hunting wilderness.

The area is breathtakingly beautiful, with Miombo Woodland interspersed with riverine valleys, open savannah plains, and some spectacular kopjes. The views from camp equal those out from anywhere in the concession.

This is exceptional hunting country for Buffalo, Greater Kudu, Eland, Cape Bushbuck, Sharpe Grysbok, Coke and Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Impala, Klipspringer, Oribi, Southern Reedbuck, Roan and Sable Antelope, Duiker, Dik Dik, Bushpig, Warthog and Waterbuck.

Luganzo, western Tanzania

Between the Ugalla River Game Reserve and the Moyowosi and Malagarasi Swamps, Luganzo is a unique combination of two primary ecosystems: extensive Miombo woodland and huge open savannah flood plains.

Not only is this excellent Cape Buffalo country, but the area lends itself to hunting Sitatunga Antelope, which are hunted by canoe or from machans, a platform erected in a tree. There are good populations of Sable and Roan antelope, and other riverine species such as Waterbuck and Cape Bushbuck.

KIZIGO CENTRAL AREA

Famous for producing world-class Lion, Leopard, Roan, Sable, Buffalo, Elephant, and Plains game.

MONDULI JUU AREA

Only 50 kilometers from Arusha, to hunt the Northern Maasai species as well as giant Leopard, Big Cape Buffalo (in limited supply), Grants Gazelle, Thompson’s Gazelle, East African Impala, White-bearded Wildebeest, and Grant’s Zebra.

SELOUS K2 Area

Hunt Hippo, Crocodile, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Liechtenstein Hartebeest, Nyasa Wildebeest, Roosevelt Sable, Hyena, Zebra Warthog, and other animals found in the Selous.

MOYOWOSI NJIGWE 3-GAME RESERVE

ABOUT TANZANIA

If in the past Tanzania has been able to attract such illustrious guests such as President Roosevelt or the author Hemingway, it is indebted to the magic of its panoramas, the cordiality of its people and the quality of its animals. Today, like in the past, Tanzania offers you the possibility of a hunting safari that will be engraved in your memory forever. The Republic of Tanzania is host to over 70 natural reserves, all with habitats and 61 different species on the permitted hunting list. The joy of finally capturing a trophy long desired is married with visiting a suggestive location largely unexplored. For this reason, we advise visitors to stay a few extra days and enjoy some of the many nature tours available and get to know “360 degrees” the pure beauty this country has to offer. African hospitality is an obligation, but you will be pleasantly surprised by the people of Tanzania who are often very hospitable to tourists.
