Whether you’re exploring a new European city on foot at ten miles a day, hiking a bucket-list volcano in New Zealand, or partying the night away in Thailand , clothing gets dirty especially fast, when we’re on the road. 

There are various ways to keep your clothing clean while traveling:

Firstly, you could make use of hotel and hostel laundry services. However convenient, with hotels charging per piece of clothing, this service adds up fast. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather spend my vacation savings on street food and adventures than the convenience of clean clothing. 

A slightly cheaper option would be to outsource laundry services. There are plenty of laundromats in backpacker hubs that charge a smaller fee per piece of clothing. That said, I’ve had countless items lost by laundry services before. And the worst part is, you’ll only notice you’re missing something when it’s too late. Self-service laundromats are another option, but sitting around and waiting hours for your clothing to wash and dry is an absolute no-no. 

One of my favorite ways to keep clothing clean is to wash it in the hostel shower and leave it to dry overnight. This is easy and convenient with things like travel underwear, swimwear, and light t-shirts, but it won’t cut it for heavy clothing. If you have the energy to scrub away at a pair of jeans, chances are they will not dry fast enough and will end up smelling even worse than they did before you washed them – no, thank you.

One thing you can do to keep your bag organized and your clean clothes clean is to keep your dirty clothing separate from your clean clothing. For basic hygiene reasons that I shouldn’t have to explain, this is where the iconic travel laundry bag comes into play. Not only are they useful for separating clothing, but they’re also necessary when it comes to transporting your dirty goods to get cleaned.

Space is tight; I get it. So, the first thing you’re going to want to look at in a wash bag is its size and weight. Sure, the smaller, the better, but you’ll also want to consider the volume each bag holds and how much washing you can do per load. Of course, you’ll also want to look for a bag that is easy to use and uncomplicated to clean.

Second, if you’re using your wash bag in the bush, outback, or mountains, you’re going to want to find a bag that helps reduce microplastics in each load. And Osprey is at it again with a highly convenient padded washbag. Let’s get one thing straight: this bag won’t wash your clothing for you. Rather, it’s a toiletry bag that makes it easy to pack all your products and essentials into one small and organized space. 

The bag comes in one size and is made from a ripstop nylon fabric. The ultralight fabric is padded on the inside to make sure your products are well protected (super useful if traveling with small glass bottles, I must say). 

The Osprey travel wash bag has a rectangular form and is closed with a zip. It features multiple pockets and a dedicated space for certain items. One of my favorite features is the straightjacket compression system, which allows you to compress the bag to get rid of any space that isn’t being used. 

No doubt a handy bag for a camping trip or as your general medicine or toiletry bag, I found it really easy to find my things and keep everything well organized and in its place. Once wet, the bag dries fast, which is convenient when camping in all weather conditions. 

On the downside, some of the inner pockets are really small but are useful for things like earbuds or small containers. I would even recommend using it as a small electronics bag if the pocket sizes don’t suit your toiletries. I’m not entirely sure the top needs to be padded since most products and toiletries that one would camp with wouldn’t be too fragile in the first place.

It might look like a traditional dry bag, but the Go Travel Laundry Bag was designed for a different purpose. Its primary use is as a laundry bag, fitting as much as fifteen liters of clothing into the bag. Designed for all my clean-freak travelers who can’t stand dirty clothing rubbing shoulders with their clean clothing, the bag is designed to separate dirty from clean clothes.

Other than storing your dirty clothes in a breathable laundry bag for travel , the container has a buckled loop that makes it easy to hang on any hook or tree. The drawstring closure is great for sealing the dirty clothing inside the bag and protecting your clean clothing from contamination.

As a team that's constantly travelling around the world, our editors have strong opinions when it comes to packing. A quality suitcase is a must, packing cubes are the secret key to travelling hand luggage only, and an organised wash bag is an absolute essential. The tricky part is pretty much every accessories brand, hotel and even airline has a wash bag now. Much like the mass of branded tote bags out there, the average bag tends to be a printed canvas zip-up pouch that can look nice but isn't that practical when it comes to travelling.

In our experience, the best way to choose the right travel wash bag depends on the kind of trip you're set to take.

For short trips: I love the ease of a clear case for stashing all of your essentials. Not only is it easy to find everything, but if you're travelling with only carry on luggage , a clear case avoids the need to unpack and repack your items into one of those plastic sleeves when going through security at the airport.

For long trips: Whether you're in one place for a long time or travelling around multiple destinations, hanging wash bags offer the feel of unpacking without having to actually unpack all of your products.

For beauty fans: Regardless of the length of your trip, if you're not one for travelling light consider investing in a cosmetic case, which are larger than your average wash bag and full of compartments and pouches to keep everything organised.

It’s the bane of any long-term traveller; having to do laundry while travelling. There’s nothing worse than having a backpack full of dirty clothes, and having no time to clean them.

If you’re anything like us, doing laundry on the road is a part of life that you wish you could outsource. While you’re meant to be out exploring a new and exciting part of the world, instead you’re searching for laundromats or hand washing your clothes in a hotel sink.

We’ve spent the better part of 11 years on the road, and out of all that time we couldn’t even guess how many hours have been spent doing laundry.

Hand-washing clothes, searching for laundromats, paying exorbitant fees for hotel laundry services – it’s just a part of travel, right?

But what if there was a better way to do things…

Finding the Best Travel Laundry Bag

The scrubba review – what is it, how does it work, keep it clean and dry, don’t use very hot water, be careful with sharp objects, if you get a hole, fix it, if you’re camping, get some environmentally-friendly detergent, is it worth it, scrubba wash bag.

For the longest time hand washing our clothes was our main method of keeping our clothes clean on the road. We’d travel with a universal sink plug, washing powder and a pegless clothesline, and would wash our clothes whenever they needed them in our hotel room.

We were actually pretty good at it, and had a few different tricks up our sleeves to make this process as efficient as possible.

Sometimes we’d jump in the shower with our clothes on and wash them in there, wringing them out and hanging them up afterwards.

If we were in hot climates, we’d hand wash our clothes, wring them out as best we could, and then wear them straight away, allowing our body heat and the external temperature to dry them quickly.

Usually though we’d wash our clothes in the sink and hang them up overnight, and because we always use quick-dry gear, they’d often be fully dry by morning.

This doesn’t sound like anything too difficult, and it’s not. But the truth is hand washing your clothes is time consuming, and often doesn’t let you get your gear perfectly clean (especially if you’re trying to do this after you’ve been on a multi-day hike.

We always wanted to find a better alternative that was less time consuming and had better results.

Our Scrubba Travel Washing Bag Review

We’ve heard a lot about travel washing machines, but never had the chance to try one. There was one brand that kept popping up in research, and that was Scrubba .

They sounded like they’d work great though, and as far as determining the best travel laundry bag goes, it seemed to tick all the boxes.

• Have a bag you can keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones – check.
• Have a way of quickly and easily cleaning your clothes inside the bag – check.
• Not leave a huge, watery mess – check.
• Be super light so it isn’t a pain to carry around – check.

Anything that meant we didn’t have to keep hand washing our clothes in a sink when we travel was a step in the right direction, so finally we got one.

The first thing you need to know about the Scrubba Travel Washing Machine is that it’s essentially a dry bag, the kind of thing you might use to protect your gear when playing around in a wet environment.

The difference between any old dry bag though and the Scrubba travel laundry bag, is that the Scrubba has a flexible, rubber washboard built into the inside.

There’s a clear plastic strip down one side so that you can see inside the travel laundry bag. This way you can put in the right amount of clothes and water without guessing.

At the top is a typical rubber opening that you fold over itself a few times and snap together using clips. That seals the opening, making it more-or-less watertight.

Finally there’s a valve on the front that you use to squeeze out any excess air once the bag is all sealed up.

The whole bag has a 14 litre capacity, but to use it properly you only put in about 4 litres of water and clothes.

Now that you know what it is, now it’s time to know how it works. In a word – simply.

What you do is take your dirty clothes and throw it straight into the Scrubba travel washing machine. Don’t overpack it, or you won’t be able to get your clothes cleaned properly.

Next you pour some cold or warm (not hot!) water into the bag, using the guidelines next to the clear plastic window to let you know how much water to add.

Finally you add some washing detergent. Liquid detergent works best as it doesn’t have to dissolve, but if you have to you can use washing powder, or even shampoo.

Roll over the opening a few times nice and tight to make sure it’s sealed, then clip it together.

Lay it down, open the valve and expel all the excess air. Close the valve, and you’re good to go.

Now that all the prep work is done, it’s onto the actual cleaning part.

This is the easiest part about the whole process, and honestly after years and years of just rubbing our clothes together hand washing, we can’t believe we didn’t already have this in our lives.

With the clothes, water and detergent in the travel washing machine, you literally just started rubbing the clothes against the internal knobs, frothing up the water as you go.

It’s the same as using a traditional washboard, but everything is contained inside the bag.

You scrub your clothes for as long as you need, depending on how dirty they are. Less than a minute is fine for clothes that have barely been used, while you might want to go for 3 or 4 minutes for really dirty gear.

If your clothes are completely filthy, you can even leave them in the bag to soak for a few hours. Just make sure you stand the bag upright so water doesn’t leak out of the top.

Once you’re done you simply undo the main opening and empty all of the dirty water into a sink. Fill the bag up again with fresh water and gently rub and shake the clothes around to rinse them, then empty that water again. Do this as many times as necessary to remove all the soap from your clothes.

That’s it! You have a bunch of clean clothes now.

To dry them we recommend wringing out excess water into the sink, then rolling the clothes into a dry towel. This soaks up a lot of the water as well.

Hang them up on a piece of rope or pegless clothesline, or hang the clothes on the back of a chair, leave for a few hours and they’ll be dry!

Last thing to do is to rinse out the bag to make sure it is clean for the next wash (and to increase longevity of the product). Do that, then flip it inside-out, and hang it from the shower head or a towel rack to dry.

It might sound like a long process, but it really isn’t The whole thing will take you less than 5 minutes, and your clothes will be left smelling nicer and left much cleaner than if you hand washed it yourself.

Tips for the Scrubba Travel Washing Bag

It’s a pretty straightforward, yet ingenious, piece of kit, and it’d be hard to find anything else that compares as the best travel laundry bag.

That being said, there’s a few small tips we have to make sure you get the most out of your Scrubba Wash Bag.

Just like we pointed out above, once you’re finished with cleaning your clothes you should give the Scrubba Bag a quick rinse and hang it inside-out to make sure it dries before storing it.

The bag itself is durable, but really hot water will start to deteriorate it. Keep the water temperature cold or warm. The Scrubba site recommends less than 50 degrees celsius.

If you’re trying to scrub something that has sharp or metal objects on it, such as zippers, just be careful that you don’t rub too hard on these parts or else you might punch a hole in it.

If you do happen to puncture the Scrubba Travel Washing Machine, no worries – simply fix it. You can use a bicycle tube puncture repair kit, some silicone or hard glue, or even good quality duct tape.

You don’t want to put any nasty chemicals into nature, so if you are out camping or in a place where you might have to dispose of the dirty water into the environment, make sure you use natural and safe detergent!

You might be wondering if it’s actually worth buying this. After all, can’t you just keep hand washing your clothes in a sink, or using laundromats around the world?

Take it from us, who have been doing both of the above things for over a decade – hand washing your clothes sucks, and using laundromats when you travel isn’t ideal.

Especially when it comes to laundromats, you can end up losing items, you need to time your day around picking your clothes up when they are ready, or you need to sit around waiting for them.

Another alternative is to get your hotel or hostel to clean your clothes. This is more convenient, because you can literally just hand your clothes over and then get them back at the end of the day or in the morning when they’re dry, nice and folded.

However this costs more money, and if you’re staying in a fancy place, they might try to charge you per item (which is damn ridiculous, but we’ll save that debate for another day).

Considering the amount of time and money the Scrubba Wash Bag saves us, and the fact that it folds down into a package so small that we barely even know it’s in our backpacks, we think it’s 100% worth it.

Also this travel laundry bag only costs AUD$64.95. Do a dozen washes, and you’re already ahead!

Scrubba Wash Bag Review – 9/10

It’s not very often we find a piece of kit we absolutely love so much that it becomes something we can’t travel with, but the Scrubba Wash Bag has made the list.

Considering we often travel for months at a time, and whatever clothes we have in our backpacks we are pretty much stuck with the entire time, we are constantly doing laundry on the road.

At 8x18x26cm it's roomy enough for most toiletries, while the nicely lined main area contains a small pouch for contact lenses. Elsewhere it's all about style, with excellent quality zips and an embossed designer emblem. It's beautiful, if a little basic, but does anyone need to pay this much for a washbag?

4. Filson Canvas Wash Bag

If you're after a more vegetarian retro look, consider canvas. It's light, durable and much more versatile than leather. Oh, and it's cheaper, too. Cut from canvas and lined with nylon for extra waterproofing, this simple toiletry bag from Filson is a one-compartment affair, though inside is an open side-pocket for easy division of kit. 

A grab handle on one end is a nice touch, as is a high quality zip. Measuring 14x19x30cm, it's big enough to take some serious gear, but it folds down to nothing when not in use, which is handy when you're back at your bathroom base.

5. Osprey Ultralight Washbag Zip

Take two wash bags into the bathroom? If you're quite the jet-setter who's just as likely to pop over to Europe for a business meeting – with hand luggage only – as you are to go long duration, long haul, you don't want to have to buy a different wash bag for every kind of trip. 

This well-designed and incredibly lightweight 14x23x7cm option from outdoor specialist Osprey has three separate sections that can be unfurled when you get to your destination. Weighing just 12g, it's got a small coat hanger and plenty of pockets, a built-in mirror, and a transparent compartment that doubles as a rip-off toiletries pouch.

6. Ted Baker Cobbler Wash Bag

At first glimpse this looks like a solid leather trunk bag, but a clever compartment saves the day. Made from faux leather, with brass-look zips and with some attractive detailing, this 12.5x13x26cm toiletry bag has one big compartment ideal for storing the usual suspects like deodorant, shaving cream and a tube of toothpaste. 

However, another compartment on its undercarriage contains a few mesh pockets and a host of elasticated straps ideal for securing shaving accessories (or even cables). It adds some much-needed functionality because despite the attractive look, the build quality here is actually pretty basic.

However, unfurl it and you find three separate compartments, two of them zipped. There's even a mirror. Handmade in smooth calf leather, each pocket is lined with water resistant fabric. It's a joy to use, but the bizarre choice to have a loop rather than a hook makes it harder to find it a home.

If you have no need for leather and looks, you'll love this small unisex toiletry bag that looks like a packing cube. Available in blue, red and grey, the 22x18x8cm Lifeventure is all about practical design rather than style. It's made from ripstop nylon, and has two compartments one a mesh pocket and the other a more secure zip top security pocket.

We also considered the overall quality of the bags, as well as their ease of use on real trips.

This bag holds more than you'd expect from just looking at it.

The limited edition colors often sell out fast.

You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. The interior of the bag is coated with an easy-to-wipe material, allowing you to clean up any spills quickly. The bag comes in five color options (with limited edition colorways offered on occasion), as well as a smaller size option and a hanging version of the bag.

If you're a toiletry minimalist, this is the case for you. The highly compact Dagne Dover Mila keeps all your products neat and organized in a tiny, plush drum made of water-resistant recycled poly. Unzip the lid and you'll see a grid created by a removable insert — use the insert to keep your products separated from one another, reducing their impact if the toiletry bag is jumbled around. There's also a zippered mesh pocket in the lid, as well as four elastic loops to hold items like makeup brushes and lip balm.

We did notice, however, that the insert takes up quite a bit of space in the bag, and you'd be able to squeeze quite a few more items inside if you remove it instead. Of course in that case, you wouldn't have much help in terms of organization. Ultimately, we love the flexibility — you can customize the bag to suit your needs.

While many toiletry kits are water-resistant, this one is fully waterproof, and that makes all the difference if you're on an outdoor adventure like camping or a multi-day kayaking trip. It's made from a special nylon that has a secret superpower: "dry-through" technology, which allows moisture to escape from the bag without letting any in. That means your toiletries (like a wet toothbrush) can dry while they're in the bag.

We found this bag to be deceptively spacious, given that it looks like a simple pencil pouch at first glance. The bag expands at the bottom, allowing it to stand alone on a flat surface while giving you the space to fit larger items in with ease. That said, there aren't any useful organizational tools to keep your products in order — this is a fairly bare-bones bag.

When you have a large number of toiletries to bring with you on vacation, the best thing you can do is choose a toiletry bag that helps you keep everything organized. This is that bag! Though it appears small from the outside, the bag is so thoughtfully designed with organizational tools — we found that there's a pocket for just about everything. The main compartment is large enough to fit small bottles, while mesh pockets of various sizes line the walls. There's also a separate pocket for your toothbrush, which keeps it nice and clean.

Other highlights include a wide opening to access each pocket easily, and the ability to stand on its own thanks to the bag's layer of high-density foam that also helps protect the items inside. It also has a handy hanging hook if you'd prefer to keep some counter space clear.

What are dopp kits, anyway? Though the term can be used interchangeably with "toiletry bag" today, the dopp kit was originally a durable toiletry bag devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt that was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this bag — a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

What dopp kits are great for is space; we were amazed by how much could fit in this bag, especially because it's expandable with side clips and adjustable webbing straps. As such, it's ideal for longer trips where you'll need as much space as you can get. We also love that it's made from an antimicrobial and antibacterial nylon (yes, it's water-resistant), though we think it could use a little more organization beyond two interior pockets and one exterior one.

Best Small Hanging

Sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

Small and lightweight, it's perfectly portable.

It has to hang as it won't stand up on its own.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultra-thin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multi-day trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. The toiletry bag comes in two sizes (we tested the smaller one) and four color options.

This is an excellent value if you need to store full-size items.

The material is difficult to clean.

Bagsmart is known for making convenient travel products at affordable prices, and that's certainly true of its hanging toiletry bag. Before it's opened, the bag looks just like a little quilted briefcase; inside is an extraordinary amount of storage. Unzip the perimeter and the bag unfurls into four panels of hanging storage for your toiletries, which we found perfectly capable of storing just about every toiletry in the book save for full-size bottles of shampoo and body wash. While most of the storage compartments are variously sized zippered pockets, some actually have elastic bands to help hold your items in place.

The quilted material is made of polyester, which we found to be a little difficult to clean. It is water-resistant, though, and the texture adds a nice visual quality. Plus, it comes in ten colorways.

Best for Cosmetics

The main compartment is pretty much just one big open space.

The clean, minimalist design that Béis is so loved for comes through in its cosmetic case: a sturdy bag with plenty of space for makeup aficionados. For starters, it's offered in eight elegant earth tone hues. But then there's the simple rectangular shape, which feels almost handbag-like in its sculptural form, as well as luxe hardware that adds to that handbag quality.

Though this bag can carry all types of toiletries, it's specifically designed with cosmetics in mind. That's evident from the removable mirror and brush holder, which has PVC material where the brush heads will go for easy cleaning. There are also a few slip pockets, which we found especially helpful for palettes. One thing to note, however, is that the main compartment of this toiletry bag is simply a vast space without any dividers to organize individual products. That said, we can report that nothing broke or spilled during evaluations.

It opens wide with a double zipper.

It's made of canvas, which may be hard to clean but is water-resistant.

Fun fact: dopp kits were originally designed for men so it makes perfect sense why this one is designed to fit shaving and grooming products in particular. It's made of canvas for a rough-and-tumble look, and it's offered in seven colors (mostly neutrals, but also light pink) and two sizes. Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to be stuffed into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

Best for Short Trips

Tumi response travel kit.

It opens like a clamshell.

It's not water-resistant.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — they also make high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon (and offered in three colorways), this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

More care will need to be taken so spills don’t damage the leather.

Take one look at the Cuyana Travel Beauty Case, and it's clear that you're dealing with a luxury item. Made from Italian pebbled leather, this toiletry bag is extremely elegant in each of its three colors: ecru, soft rose, and black. We found that this is high-quality leather that's not so delicate you have to worry about damaging it when stuffing it in your backpack or weekender.

As for storage, there are two main compartments: one with an internal elastic pocket for storing larger items and another that has elastic straps to hold items like makeup brushes in place. They open like a clamshell, and between them is a detachable pouch for smaller items. The pouch is ideal for a few items that can be used to refresh your makeup on a travel day, but it can't hold enough products for a full face.

MZ Wallace Mica Cosmetic Case

It's a no-nonsense bag — simply stash your stuff and go.

There's only one main compartment with a smaller zippered pocket.

The best thing about a pouch like this one is that it's very straightforward — all you have to do is toss in your items without giving much thought to organization. We loved this particular toiletry bag because it's more spacious than it seems at first glance. That's particularly true of the one zippered pocket inside: it was able to hold seven makeup brushes.

By the same token, the lack of organization might be frustrating to some. Depending on your preference, you might wish there were a few dividers or additional pockets to keep things a little tidier inside the bag. Still, the amount of space it has for items is impressive, and for some travelers, that might be just what they're looking for.

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

It comes in nearly 20 colors.

The main compartment only has one zipper, which makes it a little tough to retrieve items.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

• Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag : We love the soft, water-resistant neoprene material of this bag, as well as the two detached pouches for easy organization. (And did we mention the colors? Those are beautiful, too!) Unfortunately, we found it to be a tight fit to squeeze both of the detachable pouches into the main bag when all three had items in them.
• State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit : This is a spacious bag with a detachable pouch for additional storage — there's not much to not like here. But we think it's a bit too expensive, and we found the hook to be too small to use in many cases. Because it's so spacious, it's best for longer trips, as we think it might take up a bit too much room in a carry-on bag.
• L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag, Medium : A favorite for decades, this bag is the king when it comes to storage space and organization — there are pockets for just about everything. Some might find the sheer number of storage spaces to be overwhelming. But others, particularly those going on long trips or families who might be sharing a toiletry bag, will love the roominess.
• Baggu Dopp Kit : This bag packs flat, which is great when you need to store it somewhere. But when you expand it, you'll find that it's large enough to carry all of your toiletries and then some. The only thing we worried about was the durability of the materials. Though it did not fail any of our rigorous tests, we suspect it may wear out over time.

We tested 52 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab to determine the best products.

Testing started with an analysis of the bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

Then we packed the bags with common travel essentials like toiletry bottles, makeup, and dental products, among other items. We then re-evaluated the design of the bag, noting overall capacity; convenience and security of organizational compartments, pockets, and pouches; closure functionality (such as zippers, magnetic clasps, and Velcro tabs); and overall sturdiness and stability of the bag.

Next, we put the bags into weekenders, carry-on luggage, and backpacks to see how they'd fit. We also carried around the larger bags to evaluate the feel of the toiletry bags in them.

Finally, we rated each toiletry bag on its capacity, design, portability, and value, all the while considering extra characteristics like the material's water-resistance, ease of cleaning, and any extra features, such as hanging straps or built-in mirrors.

Testing of the toiletry kits then continues for a period of six months on our real-world trips, and we will continue to update this article based on the results.

When the bag was fully packed, we placed it inside a large weekender bag to get a sense of its weight by carrying it around our lab. We also checked how much space the bag took up inside the weekender bag to determine if there was ample room to store other items, such as clothing and accessories. We then determined whether the bag would be suitable for weekend trips and/or longer vacations.

After rating for all attributes, we checked each bag's price to rate the overall value.

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Also consider the material; more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

While a clear bag is not explicitly stated on all sections of the TSA website , this is the common practice and can speed things up at the security checkpoint. Toiletry bags that don't hold any liquids, as well as toiletry bags that will be checked in your suitcase (regardless of their contents), do not need to be clear.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from hair products to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.
