Delight for Whiskey Drinkers.

I went on The Whiskey Walk which is one of the Belfast tours offered by Taste & Tour. A group of 15 people and we were led by Mike round 5 drinking venues and sampled 7 whiskey based drinks. A good mixture of whiskey mixers, Irish coffee and straight local whiskeys with a bit of beer and a hot pie added on the way. Lasted about 3 hours and gave me the opportunity to find great places to drink that I didn’t know about. Mike was also great telling us about the various whiskeys we were sampling and keeping us from getting lost. I would definitely recommend the Whiskey Walk and will probably try one of their other tours when I get the chance.

Thank you so much and I hope you do get the chance to join us again on one of our tours soon! We love the Whiskey Walk and glad you did too, Caroline

The 5 Stop Brunch Tour was a great experience. Fantastic food and cocktails throughout. Ability to accommodate vegetarian options was superb. In particular, our guide Elma made everyone relaxed and feel in good hands. Highly recommended!

This a wonderful to read Charlie, much appreciated, truly! Means a lot to us and Elma. See you again soon! Caroline

Brilliant, fun, engaging and informative tour with Olivia. Great experience, tasting amazing food and drink with a very enthusiastic tour guide. Olivia clearly loves what she does and it shows. She was amazing and we ended up purchasing some of the food she recommended and went back to a couple of the locations we visited. She’s a great advert for the tour. Loved it and will recommend to all of our friends. We’ve been on many food tours and this rates right up there at the top. Well done Olivia, your enthusiasm is infectious

Hurrah!!! You're the best, thank you :) Olivia is delighted as are we. Think we might print this one off and frame it it's that good :) Thanks again and see you again on another one of our tours again soon, Caroline

Exceptional tour of the food and drink around Belfast. Special shout out to Maeve. She was exceptional and made the tour extra special. I don’t want to give too much away but you get a very good selection of different food and drink from all 4 corners of Northern Ireland. Would recommend this tour to anyone and we will be back on it when my in laws are over. Thank you once again!

She is very special indeed!! So happy you loved it and we look forward to seeing you with your in laws :) Thanks for taking the time to review us, much appreciated, Caroline

Myself and my husband took the Food and Drink Tour. It was fantastic. Lovely to try local foods and drinks with our friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide Maeve. The tour was paced perfectly over 4 hours. Highly recommended!

So great to read, thank you!! We know Meave is such a delight and the perfect person to spend a few hours with. We will see you again soon hopefully and thank you so much for taking the time out to review us, Caroline

Was bought this tour as a present for my wife and I and absolutely loved every bit of the four hour tour starting in St George's market (1 hour in market) and ending up at the reporter bar (Union street) having a cocktail after eating our way across Belfast and visiting places I didn't know existed .I will revisit these places and purchase some of the items we tasted .Oh I nearly forgot Maeve was an absolute star as our tour guide and made the tour so enjoyable with her knowledge - thanks once again

Well this is brilliant to read!! Meave is an absolute star, we are so happy you enjoyed it. The whole idea is finding new people, places and produce even if it is in your own back yard. Well done you being a tourist for the day. See you soon on another one of our tours hopefully ! Caroline

Whisky Capitals: Belfast

As the story of Irish whiskey has grown, Belfast and its famously friendly locals have rallied to welcome fans of the dram.

S ure, the area is home to some long-standing whiskey institutions, but the capital in the North is fast becoming popular for new distillers, experimental cocktail makers and budding restaurateurs, all keen to further the story – as narrated here for Whisky Wednesday by Stuart Irvine of  Whisky Belfast .

What’s the best place to have a dram?

Whilst most tourists flock to the classic surroundings of The Crown Bar on Great Victoria Street, I prefer to head to Bittles Bar . Being Belfast’s only ‘flatiron’ building (see picture), this place oozes character. Head inside and you’ll find, in my opinion, one of the best selections of whiskey in Belfast. The owner, John Bittles, is ahead of the game when it comes to newly released Irish whiskeys, making sure his bar has a new bottle before any other in Belfast.

Where would you go for a whiskey cocktail?

Cocktails at the Merchant Hotel, Belfast

Mixology is coming to the fore across the world and many bars in Belfast are getting in on the act, but if I had to pick one venue to enjoy a fine cocktail, then it would have to be The Merchant Hotel . For me a great cocktail starts with great ingredients, and at The Merchant Hotel you are not disappointed. Once inside you are surrounded by luxurious décor and what better way to enjoy such surroundings by treating yourself to a whiskey cocktail like no other you’d find in Belfast.

What about restaurants with a good selection?

This is a tricky question as Belfast, in my opinion, is still learning to combine food and drink. There are many fine restaurants but when it comes to the whiskey side of things, they often let themselves down with a standard selection of drams. An exception, however, would have to be The Hudson Bar . Whilst the food may not be the fanciest you’ll ever see, it’s guaranteed to leave you satisfied and ready for the night ahead.

How about a local tipple?

Local distilling used to be exclusively summed up with one word: Bushmills . But in recent times things have started to get a little more exciting. Already up and running is The Echlinville Distillery , which is based about 20 miles outside Belfast down the County Down coast. They have been instrumental in bringing the Dunville’s brand back into the market and I expect great things from them in the future. I’d also mention Shortcross. Based in Crossgar, a little south of Belfast, they have hit the ground running with their much revered gin, and already begun laying down new make whiskey spirit into barrels. All-in-all it’s an extremely exciting time for Irish whiskey, and specifically Northern Irish whiskey. Long may it continue.

Where would you shop for whiskey?

There’s only one answer for me and it’s The Vineyard . Whatever your taste in alcohol, this is the place to be. They boast a carefully selected range of whiskey and they have most styles covered from Irish to Japanese and blended to single cask. Staff are knowledgeable beyond belief and they’ll take the time to make sure you find that perfect bottle. If whiskey isn’t your thing, then you can also find a fine selection of wine, beer and other spirits. A top, top retailer.

What about a hidden gem?

For this I am going to choose something that’s brand new to Belfast. Taste & Tour , along with Whiskey Club N.I. , have created Belfast’s first ever walking whiskey tour. Literally launched this month, the tour will run once a month and will take punters on a tour of five Belfast bars whilst treating them to eight very different drinks. Operating around Belfast’s ‘Cathedral Quarter’, the tour takes participants through the history of Irish whiskey, bringing people together to talk about it. For too long Belfast has been crying out for something new to introduce people to whiskey, and now they have it.

Riley Strain Texted His Mother That His Drink Tasted Funny Before Disappearing In Nashville

taste and tour whiskey walk

Still trying to piece together what happened that fateful night.

It’s been nearly a month since Riley Strain’s body was pulled from the Cumberland River after a desperate two-week search for the missing college student.

The 22-year old from the University of Missouri was in Nashville for a fraternity trip when he was asked to leave Luke’s 32 Bridge (the bar owned by Luke Bryan on Broadway), and he told his friends that he was would just going to walk back to their hotel. The group was staying at the Tempo Hotel, which is just off of Broadway on 8th Avenue, and just a few blocks from Luke’s bar.

However, Strain walked in the opposite direction of his hotel, and was spotted on numerous surveillance videos walking towards the river in downtown Nashville, and the last location that his phone pinged was near the James Robertson Parkway Bridge, near the Davidson County Courthouse at around 10:00pm.

The death was  ruled an accident, and Nashville Metro Police have since closed their investigation, but the family says they are searching for answers amid what they say are still unanswered questions that they have about their loved one’s death.

Family friend and spokesman Chris Dingman appeared on News Nation recently and spoke about the concerns that the family still have over the passing of their loved one:

“One thing that threw the family for a loop was the coroner going on record with a news person in Nashville stating about the lack of water in his lungs.

It raises more questions. I’m not a crime drama person by no means, but usually water in the lungs means they were alive when they went into the water.”

And Dingman also says that Strain’s body was found without his pants or boots:

“Unfortunately the only thing that was found with him as the police stated in the report was the watch and the shirt. Everything else was not with him when he was found.”

Strain was reportedly wearing square-toed Justin cowboy boots when he was missing, as well as jeans. His wallet was also missing.

And another question in the family’s mind comes from some of the last text messages that Riley sent to his mother before he went missing.

In an interview with Brian Entin of News Nation , Strain’s mother Michelle Whiteid reveals a concerning text she got from her son shortly before his disappearance:

“He had sent me a text and said that he was drinking a rum and coke and it didn’t taste good. And I said, ‘Well you probably shouldn’t drink it then.’

He goes, ‘Well it tastes like barbeque.’

And I go, ‘Well that sounds awful.’ And he says, ‘Well it sounds good but it’s not.'”

Whiteid says she’s now concerned that there was something in that drink:

“Maybe there was something in it that shouldn’t have been.”

Riley Strain's mom says he texted her before disappearing that his rum and coke did "not taste good." It's one of the new parts of our interview airing tonight on @NewsNation at 10pmET. Also — why Riley's family is very disappointed in his fraternity. All of it at 10. pic.twitter.com/jSwK98ba6l — Brian Entin (@BrianEntin) April 16, 2024

Obviously there’s been a lot of speculation about whether Strain was drugged before disappearing, but as of right now we haven’t gotten any toxicology reports from the autopsy to show anything that was in the student’s system at the time of his death.

And it’s also not clear when this exchange with his mother occurred, or which bar he was drinking at when he complained about his drink.

Hopefully we get some of the answers we’re still missing when the toxicology reports come back in a couple of weeks. But until then, it seems like Strain’s family is still struggling with the circumstances surrounding the 22-year old’s tragic death.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
