It’s the dawn of a new era — a new Taylor Swift Era, that is.

This week, the 14-time Grammy Award-winning artist will release her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” which she first announced at the Grammys in February.

While accepting the pop vocal album award for “Midnights” — her first of two wins that night — Swift thanked her fans by divulging “a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19.”

The announcement came as a shock to Swifties, who had theorized that the singer would instead announce “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” at the awards ceremony. (That the albums seem to share a B&W aesthetic didn’t help).

And while she may have intentionally thrown fans off the scent, “ All’s fair in love and poetry .” So here’s what we know so far:

When does ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ come out?

Following a whirlwind promotional week, “The Tortured Poets Department” will arrive at 9 p.m. Pacific on Thursday. Her “April 19” announcement in February was referring to the album’s East Coast ETA.

Swift began making the album directly after she turned in “Midnights,” and it took her about two years to complete, she said during her first Eras Tour show in Japan on Feb. 7.

“I kept working on it throughout the U.S. tour, and when it was perfect — in my opinion when it’s good enough for you — I finished it and I am so, so excited that soon you’ll get to hear it,” she told the crowd.

TikTok (Taylor’s version): Singer’s music returns despite platform’s dispute with label UMG

Swifites on TikTok can rejoice — for now. It seems Taylor Swift’s music returned to the platform ahead of her new ‘Tortured Poets’ album.

What genre is it?

In Target’s product description for “The Tortured Poets Department” vinyl , the album is classified as pop, but the singer herself has not indicated where the album lands with respect to genre.

Instead, the self-proclaimed “chairman of the Tortured Poets Department” has released successive batches of lyrics, including “Crowd goes wild at her fingertips / Half moonshine, / full eclipse” — posted on the day of the April 8 solar eclipse .

Still, clues about the album’s potential sonic characteristics may lie with two of its credited songwriters, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, who have each produced large swaths of Swift’s discography.

If the two producers’ generally dissimilar sounds — Dessner leans pastoral, and Antonoff, synthetic — both inflect the record, it could be anything from folk to indie pop.

How many songs? Any guest artists?

Swift revealed the track list for “The Tortured Poets Department” in a Feb. 5 Instagram post , listing the following 16 titles:

  • “Fortnight” (feat. Post Malone)
  • “The Tortured Poets Department”
  • “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”
  • “So Long, London”
  • “But Daddy I Love Him”
  • “Fresh Out the Slammer”
  • “Florida!!!!” (feat. Florence + The Machine)
  • “Guilty as Sin?”
  • “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”
  • “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”
  • “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”
  • “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”
  • “The Alchemy”
  • “Clara Bow”

Additionally, there are four different confirmed editions of the album, each named after the bonus track it will include: “The Bolter,” “The Albatross,” “The Black Dog” and “The Manuscript.”

Post Malone and Florence and the Machine are also credited as songwriters on their respective tracks.

What promotional activity has gone on?

A gray and brown outdoor structure resembling a bookcase with the words "The Tortured Poets Department" near the top

After the initial announcement at the Grammys, Swift was relatively quiet. In recent weeks, though, she’s gone back to her internet-breaking behavior.

It started with an Apple Music collaboration that saw Swift releasing five different playlists on the platform, each consisting of songs from her catalog and representing one of the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The playlists were titled with track names and lyrics from “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Then, on Saturday, Apple Music marked the final countdown to the album with a digital scavenger hunt.

“A word a day til the @taylorswift13 album drops,” the music service wrote in its bio on X (formerly Twitter) .

Soon after, fans discovered that the secret words were hidden within song lyrics on Apple Music. Thus far, they’ve parsed the words “hereby,” “conduct,” “this,” “post” and “we,” and while many have their theories , the meaning of the incomplete word jumble is still unknown.

The festivities have also moved offline, to Spotify’s “The Tortured Poets Department” library installation at the Grove in L.A., which debuted Tuesday and is open through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“Fans will be able to explore a poetry library, highly curated to represent the new record,” the event description on the Grove’s website reads. “The shelves will be packed with books and visual surprises for fans to enjoy.”

Visitors also seem to be finding a number of Swift’s trademark Easter eggs throughout the installation, including an upside-down “So Long, London” title — which fans suspect is a nod to her year-ago breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn — and a clock set to 2.

The former visual also appeared in a video Swift posted Tuesday on Instagram. Captioned “The TTPD Timetable,” the cryptic clip guides viewers from a “Midnights”-style room into “The Tortured Poets Department,” where a wall calendar teases a Friday music video release.

How can I listen to the new album?

“The Tortured Poets Department” is available to pre-order (and pre-save on Spotify or Apple Music) on Swift’s website , and is currently being offered in vinyl, cassette, CD and digital album formats to be released April 19. It will also start streaming on that date — which for West Coasters means at 9 p.m. Pacific Thursday.

The four versions of the album are also available to pre-order on Swift’s website, but CD and vinyl versions of the album are also available at Target. Currently, there is no version of the album, digital or physical, that will contain all four bonus tracks.

Science & Medicine

Taylor Swift’s new album is rife with breakup songs. Psychologists explain why we love them

Taylor Swift's new album features 2 high-profile guest stars — and they both stand to reap major rewards

  • Taylor Swift's latest album features collaborations with Post Malone and Florence and The Machine.
  • The billionaire pop star has experimented widely with her collaborators.
  • Swift has worked with artists as varied as B.o.B, Bon Iver, and Ed Sheeran.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift 's album " The Tortured Poets Department " is here, and it features two heavy-hitting collaborations.

Swift's 11th studio album features the rapper Post Malone on the song " Fortnight " and the English indie rock band Florence and The Machine on " Florida!!! ." This is the first time Swift has worked with either artist.

"I've been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever," Swift said of the rapper in an X post on Thursday.

Their song, "Fortnight," serves as the album's lead single. Its music video is set to be released on Friday night.

The first single from The Tortured Poets Department is…………. Fortnight featuring @postmalone 🤍 I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever. I got to witness that… pic.twitter.com/b6cqrHkbE1 — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) April 18, 2024

And with "Florida!!!" Swift has finally gotten the chance to work with an artist who she's long been gushing about.

"What sets Florence apart? Everything," Swift said of Florence Welch, the lead vocalist of Florence and The Machine, in a Billboard interview published in May 2015. "Every time I've been around her, she is the most magnetic person in the room — surrounded by people who are fascinated by the idea of being near her."

"There are very few people I've met in my life who are truly electric, and Florence is one of them," she added.

Related stories

While both Post Malone and Welch are famous in their own rights, both stand to reap major exposure gains from their collaborations. Consider the sizes of their Spotify followings: Post Malone has 63.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, while Florence and The Machine has 19.5 million. Swift has 98.4 million monthly listeners.

The pop star has come a long way from her earlier days when she partnered with Boys Like Girls for the song " Two Is Better Than One " in 2009 and with John Mayer for " Half of My Heart " in 2010.

When it comes to collaborations, Swift has demonstrated an eclectic taste in whom she picks to join her in the recording studio.

The songstress has gone from duetting with Colbie Caillat on the song " Breathe " for her sophomore album, "Fearless," to singing with the indie folk band Bon Iver on " exile " in 2020's "Folklore."

In fact, Post Malone isn't even the first rapper Swift has worked with. Back in 2012, she made an appearance on B.o.b's second studio album, "Strange Clouds." The duo blended their vocals in their anti-bullying anthem, " Both of Us ."

For most artists, collaborating with Swift would deliver a huge boost in terms of fame and name recognition. The pop star has become an economic force of her own following the immense success of her billion-dollar grossing Eras Tour .

Swift sold nearly 4.35 million tickets across 60 concerts in 2023, netting her a whopping $1.04 billion, according to the concert trade publication Pollstar's year-end charts .

Swift's longtime collaborator Ed Sheeran said working with Swift helped launch his career in the US.

The pair first worked together on Swift's 2012 album, "Red," for the song " Everything Has Changed ," before reuniting on 2017's "Reputation" for the song " Endgame ." Sheeran was also one of the opening acts for Swift's "Red" tour in 2013.

Swift would return the favor in 2022 when she made an appearance on the song " The Joker and the Queen " for Sheeran's fifth album.

"Having an endorsement like Taylor Swift in America will help anyone. I think she's like, Miss America. There's no one really bigger than her in America, and if she says she likes anything, people kind of take notice of it," Sheeran said in a 2015 interview .

Representatives for Swift didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

Russia killing and torturing Ukrainian Christians, not 'protecting' them. Ignore MTG.

House speaker michael johnson is right to advance ukraine aid package. stand against russian propaganda..

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., describes herself as a “ Christian Nationalist ” but doesn’t seem to know much about Christians outside our nation. In a move that would have made Soviet propagandists proud, she has claimed that Russia is a protector of Christianity .

In a podcast with Steve Bannon, Greene said Russia is "not attacking Christianity. As a matter of fact, they seem to be protecting it."

Protecting it? Greene was apparently unaware of the numerous reports from reputable religious freedom organizations and Christian groups and publications accusing Russia of torturing and killing religious leaders. In February, the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance , a group with 38 member countries, asserted that Russia has killed 30 Ukrainian religious leaders and held 26 captive in the past two years.

To Russians, 'Baptists are American spies'

For example, in November 2022, Russian forces in the small Ukrainian city of Nova Kakhovka  abducted evangelical deacon Anatoliy Prokopchuk and his 19-year-old son.

Days later in a nearby forest, the two were found dead with signs of torture so brutal, their friends said they were “ mutilated beyond recognition ,” according to the Religious Information Service of Ukraine.

Several evangelicals who thankfully survived torture have shared their horrifying stories.

Azat Azatyan, a Baptist children’s pastor who helps oppressed Christians flee Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, was captured by Russian security services on his 25th evacuation trip. After dragging him to a basement, where he spent the next 43 days, they put a bag over his head, handcuffed his hands to his legs and connected electrical wires to his genitals.

While torturing him, Azatyan said, they “mocked me” for being a Baptist. To Russians, “Baptists are American spies,” and they “beat me so badly that they thought that I was dead.” Azatyan survived: “I truly knew that my God was with me.”

Will Congress abandon Ukraine? Here's what's at stake in the war against Russia.

Baptist Pastor Oleksandr Salfetnikov was abducted by Russians in May 2022 , driven to a detention center, thrown in a cell, interrogated and beaten for three days. He said his captors were convinced that “all evangelical believers are American spies” and wanted him to confess.

His arm was broken. He couldn’t walk. His body was swollen. He collapsed and fell unconscious. When he woke up, he was in the basement of a medical institution, with his wife by his side. He survived, and after the Ukrainians won back control of Balaklia, he returned to his church.

Apparently, torturing and killing individuals isn’t enough. The Russians have also gone after entire congregations.

On Sept. 11, 2022, 20 armed Russian soldiers burst in on the worship service at Grace Evangelical Church in the occupied city of Melitopol, the Rev. Mikhaylo Brytsyn told the PBS NewsHour. One soldier took over the stage, telling women and children to go downstairs to be fingerprinted. The Russians copied worshippers’ IDs and took photos.

“It’s horrifying to think about what they can do with this information ,” Brytsyn said.

Other Christian churches have suffered similar crackdowns, and scores across occupied areas have been shut down. Under surveillance and risking persecution, those believers are now forced to worship in secret, in their homes.

Pro-Russia messages 'uttered on the House floor'

This week is crucial for both Congress and global stability, as House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., moves to advance military aid bills for Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine. Greene and a growing number of her far-right colleagues have been holding up the multibillion dollar Ukraine aid package, which any Congress in the past half-century would have easily approved.

The Pentagon has spent more than $14 trillion since Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000, in part to deter Russia. It has not worked.

The Ukrainians, however, have taken U.S. aid and cut Putin’s warfighting capability in half .

Putin's playbook: Marjorie Taylor Greene doesn't want to help Ukraine. That's exactly what Russia wants.

Most Republicans disagree with Greene and her colleagues opposing Ukraine aid. In fact, two GOP committee chairmen said some of their House colleagues are spouting Russian propaganda.

Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News that Russian propaganda has “infected a good chunk of my party’s base. And I have to explain to them what’s at stake, why Ukraine is in our national security interest .”

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, chair of the House Intelligence Committee, agreed, telling CNN that anti-Ukraine, pro-Russia messages “are being uttered on the House floor.”

It’s now time for the House to brush aside those spreading Russian propaganda, to approve aid to Ukraine and prevent victory by a dictatorship that shuts down churches and tortures and kills Christians.

Steven E. Moore, founder of the Ukraine Freedom Project , which raises money to aid Ukrainians, moved from the United States to Kyiv just five days after Russia invaded Ukraine.

‘You’re on your own,’ Joe. Taylor Swift hadn’t endorsed Biden for president as of mid-April 2024

If your time is short.

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election but has not issued a public endorsement in 2024.

No spin, just facts you can trust. Here's how we do it.

Sorry, Joe Biden. As Taylor Swift might say, "You’re on your own, kid." At least for now —  Swift still hasn’t endorsed anyone for president in 2024. Popular social media posts said otherwise, however.

"You’ve probably heard that Taylor Swift is endorsing Joe B," posts from April 6 and April 11 said. Joe B is a reference to President Biden, who is seeking reelection for a second four-year term.

The Facebook posts were flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta , which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

You have probably not heard Swift’s endorsement because it hasn’t happened. Swift endorsed Biden a month out from the 2020 presidential election but has not made a public endorsement in 2024.

On March 5, Super Tuesday, Swift posted a message to her 282 million Instagram followers encouraging them to vote, along with a link to the website of nonpartisan group Vote.org, which lets people find local polling stations and hours. She sent a similar get-out-the-vote message in 2023, after which Vote.org said it recorded 35,000 registrations .

Featured Fact-check

Although some election watchers are reportedly eager to see Swift, whom Time named its 2023 Person of the Year, throw her support behind either Biden or his competitor, former President Donald Trump, experts told PolitiFact that they are skeptical that her involvement would tip the race decisively to her chosen candidate. An endorsement would draw attention, but her fans already lean left. And for celebrity endorsements to move the needle in elections, there usually needs to be more than one action or message, experts said. Younger people exhibit consistently poor voter turnout.

Swift endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen in a 2018 Tennessee U.S. Senate race, but Bredesen lost that election to Republican Marsha Blackburn.

We rate the claim that Swift endorsed Biden False.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What Really Went Down Between Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian? Reliving Their Years-Long Feud

Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian have had a rocky road, but where do they stand now after their years-long feud?

To be fair, it’s not Kardashian’s fault that she was dragged into drama with Swift. She just happened to be married to Kanye West , and defending her now-ex-husband made things pretty complicated.

In 2009, West infamously interrupted Swift’s VMAs acceptance speech, declaring that Beyoncé should have won that particular award instead. West subsequently apologized, and it seemed that everything was copacetic — until 2016, when West dropped his Life of Pablo album.

The record includes the song “Famous,” on which West says, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? / I made that bitch famous.”

Swift released a statement at the time, declaring that she was not aware she would be referred to as “that bitch” in the song — but Kardashian felt otherwise.

“She totally approved that,” the reality star claimed of the lyric in her June 2016 GQ cover story. A few snake emojis later, her feud with Swift was born.

Kardashian called herself “the biggest Taylor Swift fan” during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

August 2015

When West and Swift buried the hatchet at the MTV VMAs , Kardashian was present. The Skims founder stood with her arm around the singer as West took the stage to accept the Video Vanguard Award.

Kardashian defended West’s “Famous” lyric in her GQ interview.

“She totally knew that that was coming out,” Kardashian claimed. “She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear, my husband gets so much s—t for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved.”

Swift later argued that Kardashian’s account of what went down between herself and West was “incorrect,” claiming that she and West “only spoke once on the phone” about “Famous” in January 2016 and she “never denied that conversation.”

Kardashian released the footage of Swift and West’s phone call via Snapchat — complete with snake emojis. During the conversation, Swift appeared to only be privy to the lyric “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex,” which she signed off on. Her biggest issue was with the “I made that bitch famous” portion.

“Of course I wanted to like the song. I wanted to believe Kanye when he told me that I would love the song. I wanted us to have a friendly relationship. He promised to play the song for me, but he never did,” Swift posted after the video went public. “While I wanted to be supportive of Kanye on the phone call, you cannot ‘approve’ a song you haven’t heard. Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination.”

Kardashian declared that she had “moved on” from the Swift drama during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen .

The full phone call between Swift and West was leaked online, proving that she really wasn’t privy to the “bitch” line.

“Instead of answering those who are asking how I feel about the video footage that leaked, proving that I was telling the truth the whole time about *that call* (you know, the one that was illegally recorded, that somebody edited and manipulated in order to frame me and put me, my family and fans through hell for 4 years) … SWIPE UP to see what really matters,” Swift posted at the time, promoting the World Health Organization and Feeding America amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kardashian responded as well, asserting that her “only issue” with Swift was that she “lied,” adding, “They clearly spoke so I let you all see that. Nobody ever denied the word ‘bitch’ was used without her permission.”

December 2021

“I really like a lot of her songs,” Kardashian said during a podcast interview. “They’re all super cute and catchy. I’d have to look in my phone to get a name.”

January 2023

Kardashian’s eldest daughter, North West , posted a video dancing to Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

December 2023

Swift reflected on the feud during an interview with TIME , calling it “a career death” that “took [her] down psychologically to a place [she’d] never been before.”

“You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,” she recalled.

When Swift released The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology , she included a song called “thanK you aIMee,” which appeared to be a reference to Kardashian as the capitalized letters spell out KIM.

The lyrics paint the seemingly fictional Aimee as a bully, which is how Swift has alluded to Kardashian in the past. Swift did, however, offer Aimee some credit at one point in the track.

“I can’t forgive the way you made me feel / Screamed ‘F—k you, Aimee’ to the night sky, as the blood was gushin’,” she sings. “But I can’t forget the way you made me heal.”

Mike Johnson Finally Found the Gumption to Stand Up to the Freedom Caucus. It Could Cost Him His Job.

During a House vote Thursday, Speaker Mike Johnson found himself surrounded by members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, demanding answers about rumored rules changes that would go a long way toward defanging the Freedom Caucus’ veto power over the body. As Johnson was being berated, Wisconsin Rep. Derrick Van Orden interjected to defend the speaker. He began hurling insults at the Freedom Caucus members, including calling Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz “ tubby .” Of all the things to say about Gaetz … tubby?

Why is everyone so mad ? Well, getting mad is just what Van Orden does, whether the target of his opprobrium is Gaetz, Joe Biden , or a group of teens enjoying themselves .

The most right-wing members of the House GOP, however, were furious at Johnson for threatening to finally do what’s necessary to retake control of his chamber after 15 months of gobsmacking dysfunction.

After months of delays, Johnson has finally found the gumption to allow a package of bills providing security assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan to move through the House. He’s organized it in a clever way. There will be separate votes on each of those three measures, allowing some Republicans to vote for the Israel portion alone and some Democrats to vote for the Ukraine portion alone , with plenty of crossover voting for both. There will also be a separate, fourth vote on a piece of “sidecar” legislation , intended as a legislative sweetener to move certain House priorities through the Senate. It would include measures seizing Russian foreign assets and forcing the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok, among other things. Whatever passes will be rolled into one bill for the Senate to take up.

No sweetener, however, can satisfy the hard-right Republicans who’ve made abandonment of Ukraine a top priority. And Johnson’s decision to push through Ukraine aid—a policy choice he’s now passionately advocating for in a way we hadn’t previously seen —all but guarantees that Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, or some other fellow traveler , will force a vote on removing Johnson from his job, as she threatened to do several weeks ago .

And so Johnson’s maneuver to pass the aid package, and to keep his job, would rely on votes from the opposition party to a very, very unusual extent. Under the process Johnson has laid out, Democratic votes could be needed in every step of the process. That would mean Democrats would vote to advance a rule governing floor debate in the Rules Committee, on that rule in a full House vote, during votes on the legislative package itself, and, perhaps, in a vote to sustain Johnson’s speakership afterward. There is little if any precedent in modern times of a minority party bailing out the majority leadership on procedural votes like this. But Democrats may be willing to swallow it if that’s what it takes to re-arm Ukraine.

What really teed off the right, though, beyond Johnson relying on Democrats to assist Ukraine, was a story about something else Johnson was considering. Punchbowl News reported Thursday morning that House Republican leaders were “discussing using the debate over the $95 billion foreign aid package to make it harder to oust Speaker Mike Johnson.”

Under current House rules, any individual member can force a vote to oust the Speaker. This was the process by which ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed, and it is the move that Greene has been threatening to deploy against Johnson. It is the central source of the far right’s control over the speaker: Rely on Democratic votes to pass something we disapprove of, and you will lose your job .

It’s poison, and rank-and-file House Republicans are at their wits’ end with the crippling effect it’s had on the ongoing, internationally embarrassing session of Congress. The change under discussion, then, would have raised the threshold for what it takes to force a vote on ousting the speaker. Johnson, then, wouldn’t have needed Democrats to bail him out repeatedly when his speakership would come up for a vote, putting everyone in an unsustainable position.

This is what the Freedom Caucus members—even the ones who previously hadn’t supported an ouster of Johnson—confronted Johnson about on the House floor on Thursday.

Matt Gaetz, who was among those confronting Johnson, told reporters that they “sought clarification” from Johnson that he wouldn’t attempt to change this, and “we did not get the answer that we wanted.” Johnson, Gaetz said, was “equivocating.” (As for the interaction with Van Orden, Gaetz said “the only thing I gleaned from it is that Mr. Van Orden is not a particularly intelligent individual.”)

Gaetz, who led McCarthy’s ouster, had been outspoken against ousting Johnson, even as he was staunchly against sending additional aid to Ukraine. But the rumors of a rule change to release the speaker, once and for all, from the Freedom Caucus’ grip got him to reconsider that.

“My hope was that the motion to vacate would be an elixir that only required one dose for effectiveness,” Gaetz told reporters Thursday. “But sometimes, there are some therapies that require more than one dose. And I hope that’s not the case with the motion to vacate, but we’ll administer that elixir as many times as necessary to save the country.”

By late Thursday afternoon, Johnson had decided against pursuing the rule change. “Any rule change requires a majority of the full House, which we do not have,” he said . “We will continue to govern under the existing rules.” His gumption, in other words, still only goes so far. But he is nevertheless risking his job and his standing among conservatives to support Ukraine, which is gumption enough for the moment.

In spite of this, paranoia is still rippling through the Freedom Caucus. Their members were also worried on Thursday that Republican leaders could attempt a sudden removal of three hardliners from the Rules Committee, another source of the right’s power. Just in case, the Freedom Caucus decided to take shifts with members monitoring the House floor should leaders attempt to pass any of these changes by unanimous consent. That group of members is known as the Freedom Caucus’ Floor Action Response Team— aka “FART.”

The debate happening in Congress now is a weighty one. Members are fighting about America’s role in the world: whether it has an obligation to prop up an independent country facing aggression from its neighbors, and whether it should help other allies defend themselves against a concerted effort from Russia, China, and Iran and its proxies to destabilize the Western-led order. It’s a serious moment.

But also: “FART.”
