How Ticketing Works For The Cure’s Shows Of A Lost World Tour

  • Copied to Clipboard

the cure tour presale

Statement From Robert Smith, The Cure

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Cure (@thecure)
  • TICKETS WILL BE NON-TRANSFERABLE : Ticketmaster will be following the artist’s terms and any tickets sold on our platform will be non-transferable to prevent tickets being resold for a profit. (Please note: This does not apply to tickets purchased for tour dates in New York and Illinois, where state laws prohibit artists from restricting resale).
  • TICKETS CAN ONLY BE RESOLD AT FACE VALUE : To give fans flexibility if their plans change, the tour will utilize Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange, which allows fans to sell their tickets for the price they paid, including fees and taxes. That way, if a fan can’t make the show, they have a way to get their money back while making another fan’s night.
  • THE ONSALE WILL USE VERIFIED FAN TO GET TICKETS TO FANS : The Cure is leveraging Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan technology to ensure more tickets get into the hands of concertgoers. Verified Fan requires registration to help filter out buyers looking to resell tickets, and instead get them into the hands of fans who want to attend the show. While there may not be enough tickets for everyone, Verified Fan does significantly block bots and professional resellers from competing against fans for tickets during the sale. It also provides an equal opportunity for all fans to get the chance to purchase tickets to shows by using a lottery-style selection process.

For more information about Ticketmaster Verified Fan, visit: blog.ticketmaster.com/verifiedfan-faq/

Fans mean everything to artists, and we at Ticketmaster believe that the best way to ensure a fair ticketing experience for live music fans is to put more control in the hands of the artists themselves. To learn more about the FAIR Ticketing Act and how we’re supporting this movement, visit fairticketing.com .

How does Ticketmaster Verified Fan work?

Artists choose to use Verified Fan to give their fans a better chance at buying tickets by creating an extra line of defense against bots and professional resellers who are looking to get tickets for profit. The process includes three steps:

Step 1: Registration

By registering for a Verified Fan sale, you are letting us know that you’re interested in purchasing tickets. From the registration page, you  sign in to your account, select your preferred show(s) and register your email and phone number. Once completed, you’ll automatically receive a confirmation email letting you know that we got your request. It’s quick, easy and free to sign up.

Step 2: Verification

Next Ticketmaster vets each request by confirming it belongs to an individual  – not a bot – and that it hasn’t been tied to irregular behaviors that could be a sign of a professional seller attempting to access the sale.

Access Code or Waitlist

When demand exceeds availability, a lottery-style process will determine which registered Verified Fans get an access code for the sale, and which are put on a waitlist. You’ll receive an email the day prior to the ticket sale letting you know which group you’re in.

Access Code: If you receive an access code, it will be sent via text message. It is unique to your account, and will not work if anyone else enters it – do not try to sell or trade your code.

Waitlist: If tickets remain, we may text you an access code to join the ticket sale. The lottery-style process will be used to determine who gets off the waitlist.

While it doesn’t guarantee that all Verified Fans will get tickets, it does significantly block bots and professional resellers from competing against fans for tickets during the sale .

What does it mean if a ticket is non-transferable?

When tickets are non-transferable, it means that the transfer feature is disabled by the event organizer to prevent tickets from being resold for a profit.

If you can no longer attend a show, you can sell your tickets for the price you paid using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange . Important note: Fans should not attempt to purchase tickets from sites outside of those made available on the Face Value Exchange. Learn more about how to avoid fake “speculative” tickets for live events.

What is Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange?

Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange allows fans to sell their tickets to other fans at the price they paid, including fees and taxes. Artists choose to leverage the Ticket Exchange marketplace to protect fans who can no longer make the show. It also gives fans looking for tickets access to purchase them at a fair price.

How do I list tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange?

It’s quick and easy to list your tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange.

Here’s how it works:

  • Sign in to My Account, click My Tickets then select See Details next to your event.
  • Click the Sell button.
  • Choose to list one or all your tickets for the price you paid.
  • Tell us how you’d like to get paid.
  • Review your listing and you’re all set .

If I sell my tickets on the Face Value Exchange, will I get back the fees I paid when I purchased my tickets?

Yes. If you have purchased a ticket on our platform and discover you can’t use it, you’ll be able to make your money back by selling your ticket for exactly what you originally paid, including fees.

What does it cost to sell tickets on the Face Value Exchange?

There are no additional fees charged to buy or sell tickets on the Face Value Exchange.

What does it cost to buy tickets on the Face Value Exchange?

There are no additional fees charged when purchasing tickets on the Face Value Exchange. The tickets are listed at an all-in price including face value and fees paid by the original buyer.

How to Get Tickets to The Cure’s 2023 Tour

The post How to Get Tickets to The Cure’s 2023 Tour appeared first on Consequence .

The Cure have announced their 2023 North American tour . Going from coast to coast from May to July for 30 stops, this leg of the “Songs of a Lost World Tour” will be their first tour on the continent in seven years ( get tickets here ).

The announcement comes as fans are still in anticipation of the band’s new album, itself titled Songs of a Lost World . In 2022, frontman Robert Smith hinted that the album would be out by the end of the year, but as of March 2023, there is still no release date. Nonetheless, the band did play the European leg of the “Songs of a Lost World Tour” last fall, where they debuted two new songs presumably off the album.

Embarking on the North American leg of the tour, fans can expect to hear a good variety of classic hits, deep cuts, and maybe a few new tracks (if the setlist is anything like the European leg, that is).

Get tickets here , and read on for all the dates and details.

What Is The Cure’s Next Tour?

The European leg of the “Songs of a Lost World Tour” ran from last October through December — now, the show is coming stateside for 30 dates, starting in New Orleans on May 10th and ending in Miami on July 1st.

After kicking off, the tour will go west through Texas (making stops in Houston, Dallas, and Austin), through the Southwest, and into California, where the band will play their first of two three-day residencies, this one at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Then, the show will follow the West Coast all the way up to Vancouver, before hopping back into the states for shows in cities such as Chicago and Detroit, among many others.

Then, going into Canada one more time, they’ll hit Toronto and Montreal, and return to the states for East Coast gigs, including their second three-day residency, this one at Madison Square Garden in New York. From there, the tour will continue down the coast and end in Miami.

Who Is Opening for The Cure?

The Cure will be taking longtime tourmates The Twilight Sad on the road with them. They first toured together in 2016 after Smith selected the group as openers, and since then, the two acts have done numerous collaborations.

How Can I Get Tickets for The Cure’s 2023 Tour?

A Ticketmaster Verified Fan pre-sale is set for Wednesday, March 15th via Ticketmaster , with fans able to register for up to five different shows. Registration for the pre-sale is open now, and will close on Monday, March 13 at 10:00 a.m. ET. Apart from “a few Hollywood Bowl charity seats, there will be no ‘platinum’ or ‘dynamically priced’ tickets on this tour,” according to a press release.

Alternatively, fans can purchase tickets to The Cure’s upcoming tour via Stubhub — where your order is 100% guaranteed through Stubhub’s FanProtect program.

The Cure Announce First North American Tour Since 2016 + Are Trying to Block Scalpers From Buying Tickets

It's official — goth rock/new wave legends The Cure will embark on a North American tour this year, their first continental run since 2016.

Dubbed the "Shows of a Lost World" tour, the 30-date jaunt will kick off on May 10 in New Orleans, trekking through several major markets in the U.S. and Canada with things wrapping up on June 1 in Miami.

Opening each night are The Twilight Sad, a post-punk/indie rock group from Scotland who have been on the road with The Cure on previous tours. It also happens to be the 20th anniversary since their formation, so perhaps a special set is in order as they also continue to promote their most recent album, 2019's  It Won/t Be Like This All the Time .

The Cure, meanwhile, are expected to release a new album this year, which will be their first studio effort since 2008's  4:13 Dream . Last year, fans were even treated to a couple of new songs live , which are presumably on the forthcoming  Songs of a Lost World album, the title which frontman Robert Smith confirmed earlier in 2022. He also forecasted a fall 2022 release, so fans have really been on edge waiting for this new record.

Per The Cure's website, tickets will be available on March 15 via Ticketmaster Verified Fan Sale, which requires registration to access . "We have priced tickets to benefit fans and our efforts to block scalpers and limited inflated resale prices are being supported by our ticketing partners," the band also confirmed.

The Cure's first US tour since 2016 is coming to metro Phoenix. What fans should know

the cure tour presale

Post-punk legends the Cure will bring the Shows of a Lost World Tour, their first full U.S. tour in seven years, to Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Thursday, May 18, with the Twilight Sad.

It's been even longer since they've played a Valley concert — June 4, 2008, at what was then called the Dodge Theatre in downtown Phoenix.

Since the band's last U.S. tour, the Cure have been inducted (for obvious reasons) to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails inducted them, calling them "one of the most instantaneously recognizable and sonically unique rock bands of the 20th and 21st century."

The Cure’s first album since 2008's “4:13 Dream," “Songs of a Lost World," is expected to arrive this year.

The 30-date US tour in support of the "Songs of a Lost World" album will include three nights at the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden.

The Cure’s Robert Smith Says Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan System Is ‘Far From Perfect’ as N. American Shows Go on Sale

Robert Smith of The Cure

Robert Smith is explaining the serious measures The Cure is taking to avoid outrageous ticket prices for their upcoming North American tour . In a shot across the bow at re-sellers, when the tickets for the 30-date run of Shows of a Lost World Tour went on sale Wednesday morning (March 15) to those who pre-registered using Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system, will be non-transferrable in order to minimize resale and keep prices at face value.

The Cure Announce 2023 North American Tour Dates

Trending on billboard.

He then noted that the group had “final say” in all the ticket pricing for the tour, with Smith determined that those prices would not be “INSTANTLY AND HORRIBLY DISTORTED BY RESALE.” Smith referred to touts as being part of a “sophisticated business” expert at acquiring tickets and reselling them on marketplaces such as Vivid, Stubhub and Seatgeek.

Smith also revealed that the Cure were told that TM’s Verified Fan platform “has been used more than 400 times to qualify buyers and reduced the % of tickets on the secondary market” and that using VF has regularly reduced scalping by 80%, with less than 5% of tickets typically ending up on the secondary market.

By making the tickets non-transferable, scalpers will be unable to purchase tickets and then resell them for a profit since the original owner will have to be present to enter the venue. For fans who purchase tickets but can’t make it to the event, they will be able to resell the ticket on a face-value ticket exchange.

“WE WERE CONVINCED THAT TICKETMASTER’S ‘Verified Fan Page’ AND ‘Face Value Ticket Exchange’ IDEAS COULD HELP US FIGHT THE SCALPERS,” Smith wrote. “(WE DIDN’T AGREE TO THE ‘DYNAMIC PRICING’ / ‘PRICE SURGING’ / ‘PLATINUM TICKET’ THING… BECAUSE IT IS ITSELF A BIT OF A SCAM? A SEPARATE CONVERSATION!).”

The singer also tweeted that though TM’s Verified Fan is a “far from perfect system,” the reality is that if there aren’t enough tickets on sale, some fans will miss out no matter what system the Cure use. “At least this one tries to get tickets into the hands of fans at a fair price,” he said. In the final comment in the Twitter run, Smith noted he’d been told that TM will continued to sell tickets to Verified users “until there are no more tickets to sell.”

The Cure’s efforts to combat resale ticketing comes after a season of in-demand tours facing astronomical price increases due to dynamic ticketing and scalpers. Ticketmaster is currently facing  government inquiries  into its handling of the disastrous  Taylor Swift  Eras Tour presale, which left many fans outraged when service delays and website crashes (caused in part by bots)  prevented many of them from securing tickets .

See Smith’s tweets below.

TM HAVE JUST TOLD ME "ALL tickets for The Cure Shows Of A Lost World Tour will be made available during tomorrow’s Verified Fan Sale" SEEMS THE RESPONSE TO REGISTRATION HAS BEEN PRETTY OVERWHELMING – THANKS! HOWEVER, I REALISE THERE ARE PROBLEMS, SOME MORE REAL THAN OTHERS… — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
WE HAD FINAL SAY IN ALL OUR TICKET PRICING FOR THIS UPCOMING TOUR, AND DIDN’T WANT THOSE PRICES INSTANTLY AND HORRIBLY DISTORTED BY RESALE – WE WERE TOLD "In North America the resale business is a multi-billion $ industry. — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
The touts are sophisticated businesses that are expert at acquiring tickets, and the major marketplaces like Vivid, Stubhub and Seatgeek spend tens of millions of dollars on marketing. The touts get an unfair share of tickets and resell them on these marketplaces." — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
WE WERE TOLD “Ticketmaster's Verified Fan platform has been used more than 400 times to qualify buyers and reduce the % of tickets on the secondary market. — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
Using Verified Fan scalping is regularly reduced by 80%, with typically fewer than 5% of tickets on the secondary market after a Verified Fan campaign. Listed below are a few of the artists who have effectively used VF to limit resale.” — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
WE WERE CONVINCED THAT TICKETMASTER'S "Verified Fan Page” AND "Face Value Ticket Exchange” IDEAS COULD HELP US FIGHT THE SCALPERS — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
(WE DIDN’T AGREE TO THE 'DYNAMIC PRICING' / 'PRICE SURGING’ / ‘PLATINUM TICKET' THING… BECAUSE IT IS ITSELF A BIT OF A SCAM? A SEPARATE CONVERSATION!) — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023
WE KNOW IT IS A FAR FROM PERFECT SYSTEM – BUT THE REALITY IS THAT IF THERE AREN’T ENOUGH TICKETS ONSALE, A NUMBER OF FANS ARE GOING TO MISS OUT WHATEVER SYSTEM WE USE; AT LEAST THIS ONE TRIES TO GET TICKETS INTO THE HANDS OF FANS AT A FAIR PRICE… — ROBERT SMITH (@RobertSmith) March 15, 2023

The Cure Look to Limit Scalping, Platinum Prices on Upcoming Tour

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Fans and artists trying to find solutions for a more fan-friendly ticketing experience may want to look to The Cure .

After the English rock band announced their first U.S. tour in seven years earlier this week, The Cure said Friday that tickets for most of their shows wouldn’t be transferrable, part of an effort to help make sure tickets sell only for face value and that customers won’t pay exorbitant prices from scalpers.

“We want the tour to be affordable for all fans, and we have a very wide (and we think very fair) range of pricing at every show,” The Cure said in a statement on Friday. “Our ticketing partners have agreed to help us stop scalpers from getting in the way; to help minimize resale and keep prices at face value, tickets for this tour will not be transferrable. If something comes up that prevents a fan from being able to use a ticket they have purchased, they will be able to resell it on a face value ticket exchange.”

The Cure adds 4 more North American concerts; dates in Mexico, South America to come

The Cure today expanded its Shows of a Lost World 2023 tour by adding four additional North American dates, including second concerts in San Diego, Montreal and Atlanta, plus a new stop in Portland, Oregon, that bandleader Robert Smith says is an “experiment” to see whether simply using non-transferrable tickets is “enough protection” to keep seats out of the hands of scalpers.

The new concerts are set for May 21 in San Diego, May 31 in Portland, June 17 in Montreal and June 28 in Atlanta, the band announced this morning on social media .

Anyone with previously issued, but unused, Ticketmaster Verified Fan presale codes “from any market” will have the first crack at tickets for San Diego, Montreal and Atlanta, the band says. That presale begins at 10 a.m. local time Friday, April 7, with a limit of four non-transferrable tickets per person.

“Please, please, please don’t buy tickets if you don’t intend going (sic) to the show,” Smith writes on Twitter.

If tickets remain to those concerts after the Verified Fan presale, a public on-sale is set for 10 a.m. local time on Saturday, April 8.

Additionally, non-transferrable tickets for the new Portland show will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Friday, April 7, with no Verified Fan presale. See thecure.com for more details.

Smith also revealed, in a tweet on Tuesday , that The Cure is planning to play in Mexico “and seven of the 12 sovereign states of South America” — the details of which will be announced before the end of this month.

The Shows of a Lost World tour will find Smith joined by his longest-serving bandmate, bassist Simon Gallup, as well as drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell and guitarist Reeves Gabrels. Smith surprised fans last fall by bringing back guitarist/keyboardist Perry Bamonte, who played in the band from 1990 to 2005.

The Cure announced what initially was a 30-date North American tour on March 9, and spelled out efforts to thwart scalpers and try to keep tickets affordable — including by barring the transfer of tickets, prohibiting resale above face value and the use of the  Ticketmaster Verified Fan system.

When tickets went on sale, though, sky-high demand meant many fans were shut out from even getting codes to access the presale that began March 15 — and through which it seemed most of the seats available at the 30 shows were sold. Fans also grumbled as the band’s attempts to keep prices low were met with services fees that, in the most extreme cases , exceeded ticket prices.

By the time the general on-sale rolled around on March 17, Smith had secured partial refunds of Ticketmaster’s “unduly high” fees that he had felt “sickened” by. Still, by the Friday general on-sale, the majority of tickets already had been sold and buyers quickly snatched up most of what was left.

Smith has urged fans to use face value exchanges like  twickets.live  if they need to buy or sell tickets, and repeatedly has asked fans not to buy tickets to the shows in Denver, New York City and Chicago from ticket brokers, as they are in states with “laws protecting scalpers.” According to Ticketmaster, it those three states, “state law prohibits artists from restricting resale.”

Last week, Smith announced that he’d been informed that approximately 7,000 tickets to the band’s North American tour have been canceled because they were bought with “fake accounts” or listed on the secondary market. A day earlier,  Smith had tweeted  about how ticket scalpers were getting around The Cure’s attempt to limit the digital transfer of tickets by reselling entire Ticketmaster accounts, with tickets included — a method  detailed by Vice’s Motherboard in an extensive article  last month.

All tickets bought that way,  Smith continued , will be canceled and the original fees won’t be refunded — instead the fees will be donated to Amnesty International, “and the tickets themselves will be resold to fans.”

The 7,000 canceled tickets were linked to 2,200 individual orders, Smith wrote on Friday. “These are tickets acquired with fake accounts/listed on secondary resale sites,” he wrote. Any fans who believe their tickets have been “wrongly canceled” should contact Ticketmaster via  @TMFanSupport  on Twitter, Smith added.

Concert ticket system is 'broken,' say artists. But some experts say targeting resellers isn't the fix

More than 250 artists signed a letter thursday calling out 'predatory' re-sellers.

the cure tour presale

Social Sharing

The way concert tickets are sold is "broken," according to a new letter signed by more than 250 major recording artists including Billie Eilish, Blue Rodeo and Fall Out Boy.

The letter, signed Thursday, voiced support for the Fans First Act, a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would prevent speculative ticket sales when a seller does not have a ticket. It also would require "all-in" pricing, outlaw deceptive websites and strengthen enforcement of penalties for bot usage to scoop up tickets.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken," the artists said in a letter to congressional sponsors of the legislation.

"Predatory re-sellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favourite artists at a fair price.

"Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

Other prominent artists who signed include Cyndi Lauper,  Aimee Mann, Indigo Girls, Lorde, Green Day and Duran Duran.

  • Analysis Quebec wants to stop sky-high prices from ticket resellers. It won't be easy
  • Music fans won't get a break on concert ticket prices in 2024, according to experts

"Buying a ticket to see your favourite artist in concert is like going through a gauntlet for too many Americans," said U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, in a statement on her website . "This is hurting music fans and it's hurting artists."

It's an issue lawmakers are looking at in Canada , too. Measures such as more transparency, prohibiting bots, and strengthening penalties have already been adopted in some provinces, CBC previously reported . In last week's  federal budget , the Liberal government pledged to work with provinces to crack down on "fraudulent resellers and reseller practices which unfairly drive up prices."

Ticket resale prices keep rising. What's Quebec doing to crack down?

But as ticket prices soar , and resale prices soar even higher (tickets for Taylor Swift's Nov. 14 Toronto show go as high as $11,267 a pair on StubHub, for instance), some experts argue that the letter — and the U.S. bill — are unlikely to change much for fans. And they say targeting resellers isn't necessarily the fix.

The perception is often that artists feel they're being exploited or taken advantage of by the ticketing industry, said Shiraz Mawani, an independent ticketing consultant in Toronto. And he says he can empathize with their frustration.

"But at the same time, it's difficult to find a solution that really works. Because, at the end of the day, it's a supply issue," Mawani said.

"There are only so many seats available."

Sales are booming

Live music sales are booming, according to Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster. Earlier in April, the company said in a filing with regulators that 2023 brought all-time highs in both attendance and ticket sales . This was powered by big stadium tours from artists including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, Live Nation said.

Economists have predicted that, this year, music fans will continue to see high prices for big-name artists .

One problem with the letter signed by the musicians calling for ticket reform is that it's directed at resellers such as StubHub instead of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, which hold the market share and "considerable control" in the industry, said Timothy Dewhirst, a professor of marketing and consumer studies at the University of Guelph.

"It's become pretty pricey to deal with Ticketmaster for a lot of the leading concerts that are out there," Dewhirst told CBC News.

  • U.S. Senate questions Ticketmaster over Taylor Swift presale fiasco
  • As It Happens Q&A 'It's called capitalism': Ticketmaster's ex-CEO defends the company's business model

Some artists have been vocally critical of Ticketmaster, calling out their extra fees and dynamic ticket pricing. Last year, The Cure's Robert Smith convinced Ticketmaster to refund some of what he said were the "unduly high" fees for tickets for the band's U.S. tour.

Some fans had complained that the fees essentially doubled the price of their tickets. In a post on X last year , formerly Twitter, Smith wrote that he was "sickened."

That was a "pretty notable gesture" on Smith's part, Dewhirst said, but it's not one he sees some of the major artists out there, such as Taylor Swift, replicating.

"People are willingly paying the high prices. She probably figures, 'well, people are willingly able to do that, that's the going rate,' so to speak," he said.

the cure tour presale

The Cure frontman ‘sickened’ by Ticketmaster fees

Fix the tix.

Venues and artist groups have formed a coalition called Fix the Tix, led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), that is pushing for passage of the Fans First Act, which they say offers the strongest protections for ticket buyers.

Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, said that bill is "the most fan- and artist-friendly ticketing legislation that Congress has ever introduced."

"It makes illegal the abusive, predatory behaviour from predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers," he said, and also calls for a national evaluation of the ticket resale market.

  • 'If it's too good to be true, it likely is,' police warn amid reports of Taylor Swift concert ticket scam
  • Online scammers making it a cruel summer for Taylor Swift fans

But going after re-sellers, or more specifically, bad actors in the reseller market, won't fix the ticket price problem, said Mawani, the independent ticketing consultant. And limiting reselling could actually limit the supply of tickets for people who aren't able to buy them during the pre-sale or the moment they became available online, he added.

"This act that they're trying to push through does very little on the Ticketmaster side," he said.

"It could be a step in the right direction in terms of continuing the conversation around tickets and resale... but I don't know if this specific bill is going to be the one that's going to change the world."

Ticketmaster told Reuters it backed bans on speculative sales and deceptive websites, as well as better enforcement of anti-bot legislation.
