First-ever Arabic anime feature ‘The Journey’ currently playing in UAE cinemas

Headed by CEO Essam Bukhary, Manga Productions, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s MiSK Foundation, collaborated with Japan’s TOEI Animation to produce the first-ever Arabic anime feature film, The Journey, which was released for the UAE audiences on 17 June 2021. 

The Journey is inspired by Arabian folktales and set 1500 years ago in Mecca. It centers around Aws, a potter with a dark past, who, along with fellow Meccans, is forced to take up arms and stop Mecca from being enslaved by a ruthless conqueror Abraha. Abraha, the main antagonist, has sworn to destroy Mecca and the religious sentiment it holds. It is up to Aws and Mecca’s small army to fight Abraha’s superior force. The creators also add a personal touch to the many tales of the Islamic prophets that are portrayed in the film as stories to remember during one’s hardships.

Bukhary, who is also The Journey’s executive producer, reveals what inspired him to create Arabic content in a Japanese-dominated market. “In our childhood, we mostly spent time watching Japanese anime. I was inspired by such shows. For a long time we have been consuming the content, now it is our time to export the content. We are now not only exporting oil and gas, but also our creativity to Japan and the world.”

Ahead of the film’s official release, the team behind The Journey was present at the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai where a panel discussion was held. Among the panelists were Essam Bukhary, along with Farah Arif, associate art director , Nassar Alnassar, the voice of Aws, the hero character in The Journey, and Vox Cinemas CCO Toni El Massih. With the release of The Journey , the Saudi industry is ready to make an impact in anime. 

“Three months ago, we released the trailer for The Journey, and the likeability was 99 per cent,” Bukhary said, adding that it appealed to the global audience. “It’s only the beginning and it is part of the Saudi 2030 vision.”

“At Manga Productions, we are not producing comics, video games, or animations. We are investing in the next generation. We exist to inspire the heroes of tomorrow. The Journey is a unique journey, not only in having it as a co-production between Saudi and Japan, not only in terms of quality but also in terms of regional and global distribution,” Bukharay told City Times.

Well, creating the first-ever Arabic anime was not easy for the team. They had to face quite a few challenges, including brainstorming the process of creating the Arab anime characters. The Journey associate art director Farah Arif said, “In anime, there is a specific way of drawing characters. Of course, our characters are Arabian, so we had to bring in the character designer to Saudi Arabia. We wanted our characters to look more Arabian (the skin colour, the hair, and the face) so it was a challenge to draw the Arabian characters. The most challenging part was drawing the Arabian clothes, and, of course, the setting of Mecca, but we got through it and it was a very good experience.”

The Journey is the first Saudi animation movie ever made in collaboration between Saudi Manga Productions and TOEI Animation in Japan and the first Saudi made animation movie that will have promotional merchandise in what is a unique step for the Saudi and Arab film industry. In collaboration with Japan’s TOEI Animation, over 330 individuals, including the aforementioned team, the Saudi writers, artists, production and post-production crews came together to create this milestone project.

Directed by the amazing animation director Shizuno Kobun ( Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle) , the film is currently playing in UAE cinemas and can be watched in Arabic with English subtitles.

'The Journey' becomes first Arab film to screen at Hollywood's famous Chinese theatre

The movie is a collaboration between manga productions, a subsidiary of saudi crown prince's misk foundation, and tokyo-based toei animation.

Saudi-Japanese animation The Journey has become the first Arab film to screen at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre, a movie palace on the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A dubbed version of the film in English made its US premiere at the venue on Tuesday.

Directed by Kobun Shizuno, the Japanese filmmaker behind several Detective Conan and Godzilla titles, the film is a collaboration between Manga Productions, a subsidiary of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Misk Foundation, and Toei Animation, the Tokyo studio behind cult classics including Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon.

Set in the kingdom 1,500 years ago, The Journey is an epic fantasy story inspired by the region’s ancient civilisations. It tells the story of a potter in Makkah who takes up arms to protect his city against ruthless invaders who threaten to destroy the Kaaba.

The film was originally released regionally, as well as in Japan, in last June.

Following the US premiere of The Journey, Manga Productions also announced a new partnership with Crunchyroll, a distributor of anime, manga and dorama in the Americas. The deal, Manga Productions said, would help the company expand its viewership and compete on a global level.

Crunchyroll has already begun distributing The Journey to more than 50 streaming platforms across North and South America, giving an audience of more than 125 million access to the film.

“We are thrilled that through The Journey, Arab and Saudi cinema established itself in Hollywood, the capital of filmmaking,” said Essam Bukhari, chief executive of Manga Production Company. “We screened at the historic Chinese Theatre, and it is merely the beginning for films coming out of Manga Productions and other Saudi films.

"We are proud of this partnership with Crunchyroll, which is one of the largest animation platforms in the world. We are going to work with them to connect Saudi art and creativity with the world."

Production of The Journey began in 2019 and took place in Riyadh and Tokyo. A dozen Saudi creatives were involved in story development, character design, pre-production, storyboards and colouring.

The Journey took two years to complete and had a production team of more than 330 people. The film was originally planned to premiere at the Cannes in 2020, but was cancelled during the pandemic.

Manga and Toei have previously collaborated on The Woodcutter's Treasure , a 20-minute animation based on Saudi Arabian folklore. The team is also producing a 13-episode animated TV series.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.
