Kenny Loggins announces This Is It farewell tour: 'It's been an amazing journey'

The 75-year-old singer-songwriter will head into the danger zone one last time this year.

A proud Kingston University alum, Emlyn has written about music, fandom, film, television, and awards for multiple outlets including MTV News,  Teen Vogue , Bustle, BuzzFeed,  Paper Magazine , Dazed, and NME. She joined EW in August 2022.

Kenny Loggins will ride into the danger zone one last time.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is clear for takeoff for his 2023 This is It farewell tour.

After kicking off at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota, Fla., the 11-stop concert series will rock across the country to Fort Worth, Tex.; Williamsburg, Va.; and Inglewood, Calif., over the next seven months.

"It's been an amazing journey since starting with Jimmy Messina in 1971, and I'm fortunate to have had such a long touring career," Loggins said in a statement on his website . "I don't see this as the end of my professional career, but certainly a halt to the grind of major touring."

But don't fret! Loggins added that the reason he has decided to put touring behind him is simple: "After spending a lifetime on the road, I want to have more time at home," he said.

For his celebratory send-off, the 75-year-old musician will return to the stage to perform a variety of hits from his 45-plus-year career. "I'll be playing songs that I feel sum up the emotional story of my music," Loggins explained. "This will include 90 percent of the hits, and 10 or so percent of the deeper cuts."

We can only hope one of those hits will be the fabled "5.0 version" of his 1986 single "Danger Zone," which Loggins previously told EW he rerecorded for last year's blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick but that it was not featured in the final cut of the movie.

"I did rerecord 'Danger Zone' to make a 5.0 version that would wrap around the audience," he said at the time. "But Tom Cruise really wanted to conjure up the original version, the original feeling. So in the long run, it turned out to be the old track coming back."

Loggins recalled meeting Cruise while visiting Jimmy Kimmel Live . During his encounter with the Top Gun star, he asked if the film's unofficial anthem would be making a return in its follow-up.

"I said, 'So, tell me, is "Danger Zone" in or out?' And he said, 'It wouldn't be Top Gun without "Danger Zone,"'" Loggins said. "When we first talked about it, they were thinking it might go in a scene in the middle of the movie or somewhere near the end where he comes to the rescue. Instead, Tom opted to use it at the beginning of the movie so that it really conjures up the energy and excitement of the original Top Gun ."

[1] It was promoted by AEG Presents (at the time AEG Live). Michael Jackson announcing This Is It (March 5, 2009)

The idea for the concert residency came to Jackson's mind in 2008 due to his financial struggles and debt. Thus, talks with AEG, a music entertainment presenter, eventually began. According to Michael Prince , Michael was surprisingly very excited for the tour, despite of the artist stating the opposite in years prior. [2]

Originally, there were going to be only ten dates, but then the number was changed to fifty. Additionally, as the U.K. gigs would finish, shows for Australia, Japan and North America would be announced as well. [3]

On March 5, 2009, a conference would be held at the O2 Arena in London, where Michael would announce This Is It.

In a matter of four hours, 750,000 tickets were sold. During the process, two sites with pre-sale tickets crashed.

Initial preparations would start in April, with rehearsals beginning in June. Throughout them, Jackson's mental and physical health had been at its lowest, having the singer miss multiple rehearsals in the middle of the month.

Unfortunately, due to Michael Jackson's death, the preparations would never conclude and This Is It had to be cancelled on June 25, only two weeks prior to its launch. After the tragic event had took place, AEG confirmed 100 hours of footage from the rehearsals was recorded. Originally, it was meant to be used only for a fifteen-minute feature on a planned concert movie Blu-ray, but it was eventually decided it'd be edited into the Michael Jackson's This Is It movie. [2] [5]

  • If it happened, This Is It could've earned Michael Jackson even $1.5 billion. [7]
  • The tour was going to feature multiple a-list guest stars, this includes Lady Gaga and Britney Spears , who were artists Jackson was eager the most to have on stage alongside him. [8] [9]
  • In early 2009, Michael received a brown necklace as a gift from a fan. He seems to have loved it so much, that he wore it throughout the entirety of This Is It press and rehearsals. [10]
  • Some fans got to sneak into the arena and record 30 minutes of amateur audio from the This Is It rehearsals. This included "Dangerous", "Dirty Diana", "Heal the World" (playback), "Will You Be There" (playback) and "We Are the World". [11]
  • A split second video of Michael rehearsing "Dangerous" along with pictures from such also found their way online in 2020. [12]
  • A five second video of Michael rehearsing "Dirty Diana" was featured in the Michael Jackson's This Is It Blu-ray extras. [13]
  • The last song Jackson rehearsed was “Earth Song” on June 24, 2009. It was the last time Michael sang during his lifetime.
  • Michael's final rehearsal lasted 'til around midnight, June 25, 2009. According to Sugarfoot , at this exact time, he was told by Michael that he'll "see him tomorrow". [14]
  • As of June 25, 2009 when working at This Is It at the Staples Center, Kenny Ortega had the behind-the-scenes team holding hands and saying prayers, as Jackson's hospitalization was announced. For the next half an hour, everyone went back to work, when suddenly Ortega called the team to gather again, as to confirm, that Michael had passed away. [2]
  • Michael's make up artist, Karen Faye stated she overheard an AEG executive, saying Michael "should" rehearse despite of his supposed declining health. [15]
  • Faye also revealed Michael was frustrated and after a costume fitting (which took place days before his passing) repeatedly asked the make up artist "Why can't I choose?". Randy Phillips, co-CEO of AEG Live told her to ignore Jackson's requests. [15]
  • Matt Fiddes, one of Jackson's bodyguards, stated Michael wanted to wear a bulletproof vest during the tour, as the artist was afraid there would be an attempt to assasinate him on stage. [16]
  • It is rumored, that during the final show on March 6, 2010, Michael would perform “ Best of Joy ”, although this isn't confirmed.

Here's what Michael Jackson planned for final 'This Is It' tour that never happened

"He wanted to make sure that there were really important moments."

Michael Jackson at a press conference in 1996

Before Michael Jackson suddenly passed away back in 2009, he was due to play a massive string of shows in London as part of his This Is It tour.

While we never got to see how the shows turned out – except in rehearsal form as part of the Michael Jackson's This Is It documentary – the tour's choreographer has opened up about what plans they did have.

Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson This Is It, Good Morning Britain

"From the very, very start, when Michael called me, he said to me, 'Kenny, this is it'. He said 'this is it' so many times that I went back to him and said, 'Why don't we just call the tour This Is It?'

"But he had given me reasons, and he really wanted to do a tour so that his children could have an opportunity to see him in action, and to see him doing what he's loved all his life.

Ortega also revealed that Jackson wanted to do the tour for his "loyal" fans, as well as using the stage as a "platform to remind the world" of the "vulnerability of the planet".

Kenny Ortega, Michael Jackson This Is It, Good Morning Britain

"So Michael really had a vision for this tour, and every part of it played into those three reasons," Ortega continued.

"He wanted a likefulness to it, and he wanted to make sure that there were really important moments that were reminding his audiences to step out there and to take a responsibility, to do their part to make sure that we have a world that we recognise in the future."

Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, and his daughter Paris recently shared a poignant tribute on what would have been her dad's 59th birthday.

"You are always with me and I am always with you," she wrote. "Though I am not you, and you are not me, I know with all of my being that we are one. And our souls will never change in that way. Thank you for the magic, forever and always."

  • Trivia Guitarist Orianthi Panagaris states in an interview that she received an invite to audition for a spot on the tour via MySpace. When she showed up to audition, Jackson and other producers asked her to play the solo from the song "Beat It." After playing the piece, Jackson approached Panagaris, took her arm, and asked if she could play the solo walking across the stage at a specific speed. When she responded she could handle the assignment, Jackson hired her on the spot.

I believe Kenny opened for Fleetwood Mac on a tour in the late 70s. His was definitely the better show, at least the night I saw them in the fall of 1977.

Kenny, Loved seeing you a few years ago at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga… I hope to see you in October at Saratoga Mountain Winery… Earlier on I saw you at “Day on the Green” in Oakland when teaming with Messina… ALWAYS A FAN!!!

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance

Change Text Size

Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.

His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.

Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage

Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:

  • By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
  • Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
  • With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
  • This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
  • In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
  • All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
  • This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
  • Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
  • In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
  • Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
  • In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
  • Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.

Can this golf-ball design help your game? We put it to the test | Proving Ground

The multi-colored design on the side of Bridgestone's Tour B ball is part of a multi-step visualization process.

Jonathan Wall/GOLF

Welcome to GOLF.com’s ClubTest Proving Ground, where  managing equipment editor Jonathan Wall  and  senior equipment editor Ryan Barath  put the latest designs and groundbreaking technology in the equipment space to the test on the range and the course.

The tools: Bridgestone Tour B X Mindset golf ball

The test:  To determine if Bridgestone’s Mindset visual technology can improve your pre-shot routine.

The results:  About two years ago, I stopped relying on a visual aid that had been a part of my golf game for more than a decade. The putter had gone cold, and I was spending an inordinate amount of time lining up the side stamp to the target, which led me to do something Scottie Scheffler did recently: remove the line and shake up the pre-shot routine.

“I like not having to line the ball up,” Scheffler said of his Titleist Pro V1 after his win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “I line this putter up well in the middle of the face. It’s very good visually. And yeah, I try not to focus too much on the results, but my process was really good this week and the results so far are pretty tough to argue with, I would say.”

Scheffler started focusing on the single black alignment line on the putter crown and allowed himself to rely more on his eyes and feel to visualize the path to the hole. As the great Ty Webb once said, “Be the ball.”

Simplifying the process not only worked for Scheffler, but this gear scribe as well. Relying on a single sight dot and removing the sight line — I have the blank space on the ball facing me at address — brought the feel and confidence back within a few practice sessions. This was a massive win in my book.

There was no reason to mess with a good thing, but my interest was piqued when Bridgestone sent me a dozen Tour B X’s with their new Mindset visual technology, the multi-colored design developed by Bridgestone, major winner Jason Day and Day’s long-time mental performance coach, Jason Goldsmith.

Bridgestone Tour B X MindSet 2024 Golf Balls

Since he was 12 years old, Day has employed a multi-step visualization process that came about through work with Goldsmith. It was through their work that Mindset was conceived.

The visual technology on the side of the ball is designed around three different circles that act like a stop light: Red helps the golfer stop and identify what needs to be calculated — things like distance and wind. From there, the yellow circle is designed to help the golfer prepare for the shot by visualizing what needs to be accomplished. Once the golfer is fully engaged, the green circle gives them the permission to fully commit to the pre-shot work and execute.

Even though I have simplified my process on the greens, I tried my best to be mindful (no pun intended) of the pre-shot process and focus on the colors before tee shots and putts. It wasn’t all that easy at first. As someone who plays fast and tries to keep the brain free of additional thoughts on the course, making sure the visual technology was visible on the tee and putting green took some getting used to.

Taking an extra beat to consider the variables and visualize the shot is something more golfers should do before they pull the trigger, but we’re so focused on avoiding a pesky fairway bunker or the lake running down the left side of the hole that we tend to forget how even a simple pre-shot routine can help us block out the noise.

As I started logging more rounds with Mindset, I began to notice how much I enjoyed leaning into visual tech. I tend to get frustrated after a poor shot and let the bad vibes linger, but I found myself becoming more resilient after a poor shot and focusing on the one at hand.

In my estimation, I removed roughly 1.5 “poor shots” — one that required a punchout or drop from the hazard line — during each round, which ended up improving my score anywhere from 1 to 3 shots depending on how I was hitting it that day.

bridgestone mindset golf ball

While it’s still early days, I believe Bridgestone’s visual technology can make you a more resilient golfer, provided you stick to the pre-shot process and don’t consider it a quick fix.

Conclusion: I’m not going to sit here and proclaim Mindset will make you a worldbeater overnight. What it can do is give you a valuable pre-shot process that can help you cut down on silly mistakes. It adds purpose to each shot and forces you to live in the moment instead of continually focusing on the last three-putt or the long par-3 ahead that always eats your lunch.

If you’re a golfer who doesn’t have a pre-shot routine or gets easily frustrated, consider giving Mindset a shot. And if you’re like me and have a simplied approach on the greens, don’t sweat staring at the visual tech. Never once did I feel like I had to rely on design to help me line up the ball, so rest easy knowing you won’t become robotic with your approach.

Fact or Fiction: Scottie Scheffler Is the PGA Tour Player of the Year Already

SI Golf’s writers and editors debate the historic runs of Scheffler and Nelly Korda, plus the return of LIV Golf.

  • Author: SI Golf Staff

Welcome back to SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction, where we’re not crazy to be entertaining Grand Slam odds for Scottie, and even wondering what they might be for Nelly.

Once again, we’re here to debate a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

Scottie Scheffler won Monday at the RBC Heritage, dominating and completely brushing off any post-Masters hangover . Bernhard Langer was the last to win the week after a Masters title—in 1985. If the major was his best win of the season, Hilton Head was his second-best.

Bob Harig: FACT. Winning the Players Championship will get some attention but a victory a week after capturing the Masters is above and beyond. It’s simply too difficult to come back a few days later and compete at the level needed to maintain what went so well at Augusta National. Not to mention … Harbour Town is such a different test of golf than Augusta National. That Scheffler was able to quickly adapt and keep it going is impressive.

John Pluym: FACT. Check out these two stats: In the last 20 years, only Tiger Woods averaged a tournament finish position in the top 10 after winning the Masters in 2002. And the record for most tournament victories after winning at Augusta in the same year is three, and Woods did it twice (2002, ’05), and Jordan Spieth did it in 2015. So, yes, Scheffler winning the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters is no ordinary feat. In fact, it’s actually quite extraordinary when you consider the stats above.

Jeff Ritter: FACT: Scottie is on fire, and going right out and winning a week after the Masters is further proof that he’s on another level right now. The PGA Championship can’t get here fast enough.

John Schwarb: FICTION. Becoming the first back-to-back Players champ, against the Tour’s deepest field on its flagship course, has to rank second in this run. But as Bob wrote Monday, not mailing it in at Harbour Town is still remarkable. Scottie is wired differently.

Scheffler’s wife Meredith is due at the end of the month with the couple’s first child. The world No. 1 could take the rest of the year off as a new father and still win PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Bob Harig: FACT.  Scheffler has won a major, the PGA Tour’s flagship event and two signature events. Nobody else on the PGA Tour has more than one victory at this point. Take Hideki Matsuyama, for example. He won the Genesis, a signature event. He’d need to add a major plus one of the remaining signature events (Wells Fargo, Memorial, Travelers) and ONE more win just to match Scheffler. And what win would be on the same level as the Players? So that suggests another signature event or a FedEx Cup playoff win. It’s possible someone wins a major and the FedEx Cup and gets consideration but it is difficult to see that at this point.

John Pluym: FACT. The only golfer on a hotter streak than Scheffler is Nelly Korda, and she plays on the LPGA Tour. I don’t see any golfer on the PGA Tour playing consistently well enough to overtake Scheffler for POY if Scheffler decided to pack it in for the rest of the season. Rory? Xander? Wyndham? Max? Tommy? Collin? It’s not even close right now.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. Scottie’s resume would be impressive, but the news cycle moves fast! Someone else—maybe Wyndham Clark, or Rory or Morikawa, for example—could snag one of the summer’s majors and cap the season with a FedEx Cup title just before voters go to the polls for POY.

John Schwarb: FACT. Taking POY from Scheffler right now would likely require a half-dozen wins with two majors. Tough to see who’s doing that given the lackluster seasons by so many Tour “stars.”

Nelly Korda won her fifth consecutive start at the Chevron Championship (for her second career major), tying five-win streaks by Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam. Hers is the most impressive.

Bob Harig: FICTION. This is not to diminish Korda’s accomplishment, which is incredible. We are comparing remarkable achievements. But her winning early in the year, and then not playing for seven weeks, makes it harder to equate it to what Lopez and Sorenstam did. But we’re splitting hairs. Winning five tournaments—at all—is amazing.

John Pluym: FICTION. Here’s the thing: Is the LPGA Tour field better than when Lopez and Sorenstam were dominating? No. So, for now, the streak is impressive but let’s see if she can win a couple more in a row.

Nelly Korda jumps in the pond next to the 18th after winning the 2024 Chevron Championship.

The LPGA's best player also has excellent cannonball form.

Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

Jeff Ritter: FACT. Today’s LPGA draws from a worldwide pool of the best players the world has ever known. It’s a much more global tour than in the days of Lopez, and even Annika. It’s tough to win, even if Nelly is currently making it look easy.

John Schwarb: FICTION. Sorenstam’s five, like Korda’s, was capped with a win at the Kraft Nabisco Championship (now Chevron). But she won that by eight shots, one of many tournaments in which she was the best by a wide margin.

LIV Golf returns this week with a two-week swing through Australia and Singapore. Jon Rahm will get his first win at one of the two stops.

Bob Harig: FACT. Rahm had a bad Masters but that happened to a lot of players. He started strong at LIV with a couple of early close calls and he’s too good to let this linger for long. Either place seems a good spot to get the first win and some momentum heading into the PGA Championship.

John Pluym: FICTION. It might take a pair of low-pressure stops for Rahm to win after the defending Masters champion stunk it up during the first major of the year. And he looks like a guy who is enjoying a $450 million payday and has settled into playing 54-hole tournaments.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. Rahm appeared lost and ticked off leaving Augusta. But is he just going to throw the switch on his golf game? I’d expect him to win somewhere on LIV this year, but I’m skeptical that it’s coming soon. He has some work to do.

John Schwarb: FACT. As great as it is to return to the Masters as the defending champion, there was a lot more baked into it for Rahm as a LIV guy and it didn’t appear easy on or off the course. He can exhale with that behind him and these are a pair of low-pressure stops for the Spaniard to get a W.
