Movies With Time-Traveling Robots

Have you ever been in the middle of asking a question but your love of time traveling robots distracts you? So your question starts off with something like “How many times on Red Dwarf does the spaceship break down?” but ends up with “While I’m on that subject, if you could you please provide a list of all movies that deal with robots traveling through time I would be very appreciative.” It can happen to anyone, but it specifically happens to one person .

Here we present a comprehensive list of movies that involve time-traveling robots. What is the criteria? The robot / cyborg / android / super intelligent A.I. must travel through time, not just be a character in a movie where other things (humans) travel through time.

A cyborg from the future comes to the past to try and woo its one true love, Sarah Connor. Unfortunately some meatbag named Kyle Reese swoops in and impregnates her when she is most vulnerable. The cyborg’s heart is both figuratively and literally crushed by a hydraulic press because of this betrayal.

Terminator 2 : Judgment Day

This time two robots come from the future, both seeking the affections of one woman, the same Sarah Connor. The heart broken cyborg from the first movie tries to reconcile their differences and become the father young John Connor never had, while the other robot takes a much more aggressive stance. Both robots perish as their love burns hot enough to melt steel, which was deadly to their cold mechanical hearts.

Terminator 3 : Rise of the Machines

Our love struck cyborg is back again. Sarah Connor is long dead, but the cyborg feels it is important that now adult John Connor receive his inheritance. In this case it ends up being a coffin full of guns. Another cyborg comes back hoping to win John Connor’s heart, but much like the first movie, is thwarted by a meatbag who takes advantage of the situation when both her and John are trapped alone together in a nuclear bunker.

Lost in Space

A robot tries to save the humans from their own stupidity, constantly warning them of dangers to which they turn a deaf ear. Eventually this robot gives up and lets the humans crash land on a planet and die.

Star Trek: First Contact

Android Commander Data has been in the same job on the same ship for 9 years, but with his positronic brain, it might as well be forever. His programming wants him to become more human, which sounds pretty racist in a universe with hundreds of varied sentient species. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, he travels to the past, joins a radical anti-free thinking group, and tries to destroy the race he always tried to emulate.

Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey

Bill and Ted travel through heaven, hell, and time in order to build very poor robot versions of themselves to fight very evil robot versions of themselves. It is kind of like a bodacious exodus.

Flight of the Navigator

A robot space ship is just trying to do its job, when a routine stop causes a traffic accident with some electrical lines and lose its navigation charts. Conveniently the child who was being dropped off has all the necessary charts in his head, Jonny Mnemonic style. Follow that with an hour of evading the government shenanigans, and a trip back to 1978, and you’ve got yourself a time traveling robot.

Bender’s Big Score

Bender is just a robot trying to make ends meet. So when he travels to the past over and over again to steal Earth’s historic treasures, what could go wrong? Apparently everything. Paradoxes ensue.

Cyborg 2087

Cyborg travels to the past to try and fix dystopian future. This is almost more detail than is provided on the Wikipedia page.

Meet the Robinsons

Like most good robot time-traveling stories this one is a tragic love story. Hatty the Bowler Hat just wanted to be appreciated by its maker. When that doesn’t work, it travels to the past to make sure everyone will always love bowler hats. There may also be a couple of kids in this movie.

Unidentified Flying Oddball

Hermes the Android and his lookalike human companion Tom travel to King Arthur’s court to stop Merlin, who apparently is a bad guy now. Hermes has the advantage here, because he is the only one who doesn’t fear death and is a robot.

Attack Robots are sent back in time to work a union job, destroying a virus that causes a paradox and ruins the future. Unfortunately yet another human is on duty to get in the way and steal all the credit. Meatbag extraordinaire Sinclair decides to do things “his way” and fix the future behind the killer robot’s backs. The nerve of some people.

A movie about love, hate, beauty, tragedy, and ultimately redemption, Future War (set in the present day) sees the caring Cyborg Master travel to the past to find his lost puppy of a slave “Runaway”. Unfortunately Cyborg Master suffers a fate worse than death, which is appearing in this movie, and then finally is given sweet release when his slave kills him, setting him free from the agony of this picture.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

They call Marvin “the paranoid android,” behind his back, because kids can be so cruel. Is it paranoid to have hyper suspicion, anxiety, and fear? Marvin probably wouldn’t be so depressed if he didn’t have to aimlessly wander the galaxy with people approximately 50,000 times stupider than himself. After meandering around for 100 minutes or so with these half wits, he needs a break, and decides to travel to the end of time and matter and dine at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

While Lost in Space features both time-travel and robots, I don’t believe the robot actually does any of the time-travelling. Am I not remembering correctly?

At about 40 minutes into the film, when they approach the two derelict spacecraft, they pass through one of the “time” bubbles. The robot is on board the Jupiter One for this, and subsequently boards one of the ships with the “away team.” Since it passed through the time bubble with everyone else, it traveled through time.

I looked at the list at http://www.aetherco.com/timelinks/ and didn’t find any other movies with time-traveling robots, but since you have some cyborg movies on your list I did find two that appear to feature time-traveling cyborgs: “Eliminators” from 1986, and “Nemesis 2: Nebula” from 1997. And the description there doesn’t mention it, but I know that “The Time Guardian” from 1987 has some evil time-traveling cyborgs.

Also came across “The Invisible Boy” from 1957, though the plot description at http://moria.co.nz/sciencefiction/invisibleboy.htm suggests time travel just a pretext for getting Robbie the Robot from Forbidden Planet back to the present era so a kid could have some adventures with him. And “The Last Mimzy” described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Mimzy might count, the stuffed rabbit that comes back in time is a type of A.I. I think.

Clearly, you – enough to comment.

Many futuristic movies are vague about the year in which their action takes place. But other movies are willing to nail their colors to the mast, predicting specific technologies in specific years. Some of these visions—like the soaring skylines of Metropolis —have already come to pass, while others—like the hoverboards of Back to the Future II —seem likely to miss the mark. But some of the underlying themes have a timeless appeal.

Stephen Cass is the special projects editor at IEEE Spectrum . He currently helms Spectrum's Hands On column, and is also responsible for interactive projects such as the Top Programming Languages app. He has a bachelor's degree in experimental physics from Trinity College Dublin.

Robots, Time-Travel and Eternal Life: 9 predictions from a professional tech futurist

Predicting the future is a difficult gambit that too often involves tea leaves, crystal balls, and tightly-crossed fingers. But can anyone really see beyond the present day?

Dr Ian Pearson is a professional futurist, and sceptic of all things ‘Mystic Meg’. He’s been a full-time future-gazer since 1991, and claims 85% accuracy when it comes to 10-year predictions. These include music subscription services (1991), the wristwatch computer (1994), and even Elon Musk’s Hyperloop (2006). Far from being some tarot card wielding rent-a-mystic, he was even previously employed by BT as an actual ‘futurologist’.

A Doctor of Science with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Pearson has had an illustrious career, which saw him spend four years designing missiles, as well as helping develop text messaging and the active contact lens. He now spends his days peddling predictions about the coming years.

We sat down with Pearson to see what an esteemed futurist thinks the road ahead looks like for humanity. But be warned – it’s not all pretty.

Conscious AI is coming, and it might kill us

Killer robots might be one of the more common science fiction tropes, but the idea is borne from science fact. According to Pearson, humanity could be usurped by circuit boards as soon as 2025.

“It could happen in the next 10 years,” said Pearson, when asked how far off the AI apocalypse might be. “We’re pretty much at the point where you could start doing evolutionary design projects that would come up with an AI which is of human level intelligence and conscious within two to three years.”

Pearson may be right; there’s no shortage of researchers trying to develop artificial intelligence. Even your smartphone has its own digital assistant – Apple’s Siri, Google’s Now, and Microsoft’s Cortana. But they’re all still pretty stupid, for now anyway.

“You could have a computer which is conscious and smarter than a human being within ten years,” the futurist tells TrustedReviews . “Other people would tell you that that’s absolutely impossible and that will never happen, but I really don’t understand why they believe that. I think it’s very likely that it won’t be just equivalent, and we will make some that are vastly superior.”

Pearson explains that there’s a good chance AI will eventually design its own offspring, and says we “could end up with the Terminator scenario”.

Maybe Elon Musk’s warnings were right?

future 15

Killer robots scare you? How about liquid metal death droids…

Right, let’s say we do end up with the Terminator scenario. How bad can it be? Pretty darn terrible according to Pearson, who says the liquid metal T-1000 robot from Terminator 2 could become a reality.

For the unaware, T-1000 is a shapeshifting android assassin whose body is made from a liquid metal that lets the droid transform into deadly objects (read: not good).

“I’ve actually met the guy who runs a company called Robodyne, and he works out a technique to actually make that liquid metal robot,” Pearson reveals. “So other people have worked out how to make self-healing systems, other people have worked out how to make reconfigurable hardware, and so on.”

The futurist continues: “So a lot of the concepts that you see in the liquid metal Terminator 2, the T-1000; that sort of thing is well known to be entirely feasible. We could make that sort of thing in due course.”

Pearson says that we already know how to do it “in principle”, and that it’s just a matter of time waiting for the technology to come down in price. He also warns against blanket faith in science fiction, and says some technology we see in the movies just isn’t realistic.

“Watch a film like Iron Man or something like that, you see this sort of glowy thing that he has on his chest, which is somehow supposed to make energy,” he explains. “That looks pretty and it makes a nice film, but it’s not any great relevance to engineering, because there’s obviously no indication to how it actually works.”

future 9

AI is a legal headache waiting to happen

Whether artificial intelligence wipes us out or not is open to debate. What’s more certain however, is that we can eventually develop AI. And when we do, we’ll need solid legislation in place ahead of time – but that isn’t easy.

“Even in the field, there isn’t 100% agreement how the technology might play out,” says Pearson. “And because of that, it’s very difficult to make laws about it really. You could make a generic law that says you’re not allowed to make a machine with the intention of making it smarter than a human being, but you might overlook something.”

According to the futurist, there are so many different ways we might try to write AI laws, that any one of them “might have great big gaping holes.

“I don’t think we have the capability to make a set of laws which we be successful in preventing somebody from developing AI,” he continues, adding that even laws “don’t stop people doing it”.

“We’ve just seen teenagers hacking through into TalkTalk and causing quite severe problems. It’s against the law to do that, but they still did it,” he tells us.

future 7

You could fall in love with a robot

It’s not all doom and gloom though. Pearson reckons there’s a good chance we’ll learn to love our AI counterparts – perhaps a little too much.

“People will fall in love with a robot even if it doesn’t behave exactly like a human being,” the futurist explains. “We see the evidence of that when people watch science fiction. If somebody sits down and watches Star Wars for example, they form a bond with C-3P0 and R2-D2, and when they get trashed they feel upset. They’re very obviously machines, but they still form a bond.”

Pearson’s right, and he’s not peddling an entirely original concept either. Plenty of science fiction flicks have dabbled with the idea of human-robot relations. Recent examples include Ex Machina (2015) and Her (2013), both of which saw the humble homo sapien get smitten with a circuit board.

Pearson compares it to how humans care for animals, but says the bond can go much further than the tenderness we feel towards a pet.

“A lot of people have got pet cats and pet dogs and love those, and would very easily love a robot that has got some sort of personality, or a picture on a computer screen which seems to have personality behind it,” he says. “They will fall in love with it. Whether you believe it, people will. And some people will want to have sex with them as well.”

future 5

Developing AI isn’t safe – until 2040, anyway

In the grand timeline of the universe, humanity is still in its infancy. So maybe it’s wise to put the brakes on before we starting building our successors. But how long should we wait before it’s safe to work on AI?

“Around about 2040, 2045, some time after that it will be relatively safe to develop strong AI,” explains Pearson, warning about the perils of getting ahead of ourselves. “If we were to develop a very strong AI next year or the year after, I think it would be very risky. We would be trusting in luck that the machine doesn’t want to take over the world and doesn’t want to kill us all.”

He continues: “So if you do it too early, you’re relying on luck. If you leave it long enough, the luck becomes much less relevant.”

The problem isn’t with us though; Pearson admits that “most of us are aware of the risks” and can see the point in delaying AI research a little while. The real jeopardy lies in the possibility of someone taking matters into their own hands.

“You can’t stop some rogue regime or terrorist group or a lone mad scientist trying his best to develop this stuff all by himself,” says the futurist. “And it’s the sort of thing you could do in a teenager’s bedroom.”

future 3

We’ll be augmenting our bodies soon

So if you can’t beat them, why not join them? It might sound like a crazy prospect, but Pearson thinks there’s a high chance we’ll eventually turn into machines ourselves.

“A lot of people are very enthusiastic about using technology to make their bodies better in a lot of different ways,” he tells TrustedReviews . “They’re almost queueing up around the block to get their arms chopped off so they can get bionic arms put on that because they see them as better.”

It’s not such a crazy thought; bionics is already a heavily developed field in medicine. Pearson references a number of existing augmentation technologies, including implants to treat Parkinson’s and hearing issues, retina implants, and limb replacements.

“We’re working on the neuro-network connections to allow them to control their prosthetic limbs,” he continues. “And this last week we’ve seen synthetic skin coming out which is more sensitive than human skin, and you could link that to the existing nervous system to give you better senses.”

“So if you get your arm chopped off, we could give you a bionic arm which actually works better than your one. So we’re heading down that road quite quickly,” the futurist adds.

Of course, that brings us back to the legal issues again, Pearson reminds us: “It does make it more difficult to do the regulations as well, because if you make laws against robots, do you also extend those to people who contain robotics?”

We sense a dystopian novel in the making…

future

We can eventually live forever…sort of

What’s interesting about augmentation is that there’s very little stopping us from eventually replacing the majority of our bodies with technology.

According to Pearson’s estimates, we will be able to replace 98% of our body with synthetic parts by 2025 – everything but the brain, basically. And that, he says, is the key to eternal life.

“I think by 2050 onwards, we’ve got such a strong link between the human brain and the machine world, it’s entirely possible to make an exact replica of your brain outside of the machine,” the futurist explains, “which means essentially making a backup of yourself, so if one day you get run down by a bus, it doesn’t really matter, you’ve got a back-up.”

He continues: “I think it’s very likely to happen, and we will see some people who have died biologically who will carry on as robots and androids for essentially an indefinite period after that. It might not be forever, because there might be people who are concerned about population and environmental impact and all sorts of other things, so there might be restrictions on how long you’re allowed to carry on living after you’ve died.”

“I always make the joke that from 2050 onwards, death isn’t a major career problem,” Pearson adds.

future 13

Time-travel will probably be invented by robots

Time-travel is a tricky concept, and Pearson isn’t convinced that we’ll ever resolve the difficult physics involved. But if we do, it’ll be the robots that crack it first.

“When we do figure it out in the real world, it will probably be a smart AI which will make this discovery,” says the futurist. “A super-smart AI which is actually fantastic at mathematics and physics and stuff, will understand it so well it might figure out a solution, and it’ll be the machine that will likely build the machine to do that time travel, long before people can understand it.”

VR experiences

We’ll end up addicted to virtual reality

Today, we see humans addicted to all sorts of things, including computer games. If something is really enjoyable, some people will end up with a habit that’s difficult to kick.

Pearson says that same logic can be applied to virtual reality, a burgeoning technology that looks set to take off over the next year.

“You can live long periods in it, and I think some people will spend a lot of time in virtual reality worlds, if they’re any good,” he says. “Some people will prefer it to real life because they can control what they do better, and they can live like a king or a queen in virtual reality, whereas in real life they live in a horrible flat in the middle of London which is damp and ugly.”

The futurist describes how virtual reality could offer “a level of escapism” that will lead people down the dark path of addiction.

But Pearson says we probably won’t see a Matrix-style scenario where people are strapped to VR machines 24/7.

“I don’t think that you really can live your whole life in it, because you have to eat and you have to sleep and you have to go to the toilet and so on,” he says. “Those physical needs interrupt play.” Do you have any predictions for the future of technology and humanity? In April 2021, Bumble, one of the free-flying Astrobee robots aboard the International Space Station, was put to the test to investigate a simulated anomaly. In the simulation, the station’s life support systems detected a high concentration of carbon dioxide. A similar situation in reality could be very dangerous for the seven people who are living and working aboard the microgravity laboratory.

During the test, the small, cube-shaped robot adeptly navigated the station to find the location designated as a “vent” used for cabin air circulation, and used computer vision to automatically detect the foreign object blocking the vent – an “astronaut sock,” represented by a printed image of a sock. Then, Bumble called for help to clear the blockage. For its next test, Bumble completed a survey of Bay 6 of the space station’s Japanese Exploration Module, building a high-resolution multi-sensor 3D map. During this journey, Bumble found itself bumping into and untangling itself from stray cables, and coping with simulated space-to-ground communication interruptions. It ultimately persevered and completed its mission objectives, with a little timely help from ground operators.

This simulated fault scenario marked the end of the first phase of testing for software designed to enable autonomous operations of a spacecraft’s operating and robotic systems. The software’s name is ISAAC – the Integrated System for Autonomous and Adaptive Caretaking.

“ISAAC is far more than just a management tool for our robotics and spacecraft systems,” said Trey Smith, the project manager for ISAAC at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “Our long-term vision is that it can transform a spacecraft into an autonomous robotic system itself.”

NASA’s future Artemis missions to the Moon and beyond will take humans farther than they ever have before – and a host of robotic and mechanical systems will go with them. On the space station, much closer to home, astronauts have been able to stay full time, surpassing 20 years of continuous human presence – something that won’t be possible in deep space for some time. How can future spacecraft operate smoothly without that consistent human touch? ISAAC aims to deliver technologies to enable remote and autonomous caretaking during long periods of time when the astronauts are not aboard to perform maintenance, logistics management, and utilization tasks, as well as when communication with ground controllers is limited or simply unavailable.

NASA’s future missions will venture farther and farther away from Earth. This means some spacecraft and stations, like the agency’s Gateway outpost, will not be continuously crewed as the space station is. Gateway, which will orbit near the Moon and be a model for future missions to Mars, may only host a human crew six weeks out of a year but will still need to be maintained year-round.

The series of demonstrations NASA conducted with ISAAC on the space station this spring that culminated with Bumble’s journey used both the station’s systems and robotics to autonomously work through potential scenarios in which NASA may want to use ISAAC on future stations. The latest demo was the final milestone of ISAAC’s first phase of testing, with more to follow in the future, ultimately bringing this technology to a place where it can be used for future deep space missions.

Man in a blue polo shirt floats next to a small, cube-shaped robot in a hallway in the International Space Station.

The ISAAC team is now engaged in its second phase of testing aboard the station, which focuses on managing multiple robots as they transport cargo between an uncrewed space station and an uncrewed visiting cargo spacecraft. In addition to testing ISAAC with these new variables, the team is adding an improved operator interface to simplify managing the vehicle-robot systems. In the third and final phase of testing, the team will throw even more difficult fault scenarios at ISAAC, such as mock cabin air leaks or fires, and develop robust techniques to respond to anomalies that occur when responding to these simulated crises.

Life today on the space station is one of near-constant communication – between astronauts, robots like the free-flying Astrobees, station systems, science teams on Earth, and more. Human controllers on Earth manage many of these complex schedules and systems, but in the future, when NASA travels to further destinations where humans won’t always be around, that’s going to change.

“ISAAC is a key to making a station like Gateway work,” said Smith. “The farther we go out into space, the smarter our spacecraft and robotics systems will need to be. We’re hoping ISAAC will be an assistant to future astronauts, even when they’re not there.”

'The Paradox Hotel' by Rob Hart is a trippy time travel murder mystery (exclusive)

Hart spoke with us on his old-fashioned murder mystery at a luxury hotel for time travelers.

In Rob Hart's "The Paradox Hotel," an old-fashioned murder mystery stirs up trouble in a luxury lodging for time travelers.

Ever since H.G. Wells' sci-fi novella "The Time Machine" entered Victorian society in 1895, we've been transfixed with the notion of hopping backwards and forwards via the turbulent waters of the time stream.

Expanding upon the time travel idea of skipping through the centuries, film franchises and TV shows like "The Terminator," "Back to the Future," "12 Monkeys," "Looper" and "Doctor Who" have all explored the promise and the perils of time travel to varying degrees over the last 50 years. The result is some of the best time travel movies of all time.

Now New York Times bestselling author Rob Hart is dipping his imagination into the temporal pool with " The Paradox Hotel ," (Ballantine Books, 2022) where he introduces us to a mysterious lodging facility located beside a timeport that specifically caters to wayward time travelers.

Hart’s work has already attracted Hollywood luminaries by selling the adaptation rights to his 2019 futuristic thriller " The Warehouse " to Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard for his next directorial project. "The Paradox Hotel" has also been optioned to develop into a TV series. (If you're interested in more wild science fiction reads, check out our best sci-fi books guide.

The Paradox Hotel: A Novel was $28

The Paradox Hotel: A Novel | was $28 now $20.49 at Amazon.

Dive into an old-fashioned murder mystery with a time travel twist in Rob Hart's new novel "The Paradox Hotel" out now.

The Paradox Hotel

This sci-fi mystery's storyline introduces the character of January Cole, a director of security at the Paradox Hotel, where a typical day finds rich tourists checking in dressed to impress for a dozen different time periods while awaiting departures for flights to the past. It's a bizarre workplace environment where clocks might tick backwards and temporal spirits roam.

There's also the conundrum of a dead body in Room 526 that, like Schrödinger's Cat, is both there and not there at the same instant. But January is the only one who can see this spectral corpse and her reality begins to unravel when VIP guests arrive as the U.S. government prepares to privatize time travel technology and a ghostly murderer is on the loose inside the hotel.

"I've always loved time travel stories, and I finally decided to give it a try with 'The Paradox Hotel' — which seemed like a good idea when I started, and then I learned that actually writing time travel is pretty complicated," Hart told Space.com. "But it was worth it! Since it was about time travel, I was pretty adamant that it needed robots and dinosaurs — because if I'm going to do it, I'm going to have fun with it. But it was also a great mechanism for exploring grief, and how hard it is for us to face ourselves."

The Paradox Hotel

Hart first got the premise while searching for real-world parallels, and discovered it in the current state of space travel.

" Something that started as a research venture by the government, and became underfunded over the years, which opened the door to private investment,." Hart explains." And now you've got guys like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk sending tourists into space. It seems like time travel would follow a similar path. But here's the thing: space isn't just about tourism. It's about communication networks, and how zero-G would improve manufacturing and shipping, and the fact that the average meteor contains trillions of dollars in precious metals. There are a lot of ways to profit in space, and it was fun to figure out the ways people could profit with time travel."

"The Paradox Hotel" was officially optioned for an episodic TV series by Universal's Working Title, and Hart reveals that the development process is coming along great.

"I just recently read the finished draft of the pilot episode, and it's just bonkers brilliant," he adds. "It takes a lot of liberties, but in the best way possible, really spinning out the worldbuilding and the mystery aspects, and making them work in a really visual way. At this point we move on to the next steps in the process, and sure, it's just an option, and this stuff takes forever, and it might not even get made — but I'm excited to have made it this far."

Rob Hart's " The Paradox Hotel " is available now at book stores and online outlets.

Top 20 Best Time Travel Anime Series & Movies

Time machine in SteinsGate

Here’s a question: what’s your favorite time travel anime? Are there even enough good titles in this sci-fi subgenre?

It isn’t filled to the brim each season unlike with the case of isekai titles, but it’s not impossible to find some great ones.

If you’re in the mood for some mind-boggling twists and turns (or even minor time travel elements in an otherwise typical anime) check out my list below.

And fair warning: spoilers ahead(in some cases). Some titles here have time travel itself as a key turning point or surprise in the series, so if you don’t want to know any more just skim the titles and pick one that interests you!

20. Nobunaga Concerto

Nobunaga Concerto anime screenshot

I’m going to start with Nobunaga Concerto, an anime that does have time travel — but is also more of an isekai.

This is why I’m including it on my list but, but not the highest for sure. So what’s it all about?

As you may have already guessed, it involves Oda Nobunaga . Arguably one of the most popular Japanese historical figures.

He was a brutal leader, but he was also brilliant and a key figure in the reunification of Japan.

But Nobunaga isn’t the OP. In Nobunaga Concerto, he meets Saburou who mysteriously time travels from the 21st century and looks like him.

Saburou was just an ordinary high school kid, but now he must replace Nobunaga, who wishes to relax in his final years.

19. Natsu-iro no Sunadokei (Sandglass of Summer Colors)

Natsu-iro no Sunadokei screenshot

This is an old anime. Like, really old.

But while its character design, animation, and overall quality haven’t stood the test of time, it is a worthwhile show that involves more time travel than Nobunaga Concerto.

Sandglass of Summer Colors is an adaptation of a video game, a visual novel (VN) from Princess Soft that was released way back in 2002.

Also, it only has two episodes; it’s an OVA. Still, it’s an intriguing show.

Yes it once again involves a teenage boy, this time named Kotaro Makimura.

But here, the time travel comes in the form of Kotaro waking up to the next school year, and then going back and forth to specific days of his summer vacation.

Through this he learns some very crazy news about his girlfriend Kaho Serizawa. It gets deep.

18. Buddy Complex

Buddy Complex anime screenshot

In 2014, Sunrise released an action-heavy mecha title that surprisingly wasn’t another entry to their sprawling Gundam franchise.

It’s called Buddy Complex, and it does enough to distinguish itself from other similar titles with its appealing trio, plot, and solid execution.

Buddy Complex starts with the main hero Aoba Watase nearly getting killed in the hands of a massive robot from the future.

Hina Yumihara saves him, and also takes him 70 years into the future for him to learn all about the fighting robots and possibly prevent his demise.

Can he go back to his actual timeline? Or is he stuck in this future of warring military forces?

17. Doraemon

Doraemon anime screen

Yes, Doraemon is indeed a time-travel anime — and quite a good one at that.

Some argue that the time travel aspect is a mere gimmick here. But I honestly love what the anime has done with it.

The story isn’t about a dystopian future and someone who wants to save it by going back to the past.

No, it’s about Sewashi Nobi from the 22nd century sending a cat robot to improve the life of his grandfather Nobita Nobi — and that’s wonderful.

With 1,700 episodes, Doraemon has proven that this subgenre can be wholesome for kids.

Likewise, who doesn’t want a four-dimensional pouch that can bring out all sorts of gadgets of different sizes?

16. Punch Line

Punch Line anime screenshot

Punch Line was MAPPA’s third original anime after Garo: The Animation and Zankyou no Terror, the latter being one of my all-time favorites.

No, Punch Line wasn’t a modern classic in my eyes at all.

It didn’t have the serious or ambitious tone of those previous shows.

However, Punch Line was a creative risk that needs commending — and even a reappraisal from anime fans.

It’s silly but fully aware of it.

How silly? It involves spirits, nose bleeding, panty shots.

Also, the OP has to avoid looking at panties as he travels through time as a spirit. Otherwise a meteor immediately kills all life on Earth. So that’s fun.

15. InuYasha

InuYasha anime screenshot

I’ve got another entry here from Sunrise Studio.

InuYasha was one of the biggest shounen titles before series like Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy Tail took over — and it does have time travel.

Kagome Higurashi goes back hundreds of years to feudal Japan. The difference is instead of meeting a general, he meets a white-haired guy who also has dog ears.

Also, both Kagome and Inuyasha can travel between modern Japan and feudal Japan with relative ease.

And I suggest InuYasha just because it’s one of the best shounen series of all time. Time travel or not.

14. Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara (Iroduku: The World in Colors)

Iroduku: The World in Colors anime

I have a soft spot for original anime. It takes a lot of guts to push through with a story you don’t know will work out.

It doesn’t have a built-in fan base unlike with adaptations of manga, LNs, and video games.

But Iroduku: The World in Colors was more than just an original anime.

It was a visually imaginative and wonderfully animated series, and it was clear that P.A. Works didn’t just do this half-heartedly.

Think of it as a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and school drama.

A grandmother sends her emotionally distant granddaughter 60 years back to the past, but she doesn’t say why.

And now that she’s back to 2018(present when released) the young girl named Hitomi Tsukishiro learns all about self-discovery and human connection. Go see it.

13. Charlotte

Charlotte anime screenshot

Look, I get it — Angel Beats was a great anime series.

That was a show that managed to make me love all the students in just 13 episodes.

Plus, I’m confident that most viewers won’t ever forget the ending.

Since then, people have been clamoring for something like it from Jun Maeda.

Well Charlotte came into the fray, but it wasn’t exactly as good as Angel Beats or Clannad.

Still, Charlotte certainly has its moments as a school drama with time travel (among other powers).

Also this is an anime original, and I think the best moments outweigh the pacing and plot issues by the end.

Zipang anime screenshot

I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of Zipang.

Despite being released two full years later than Naruto, Zipang somehow sports a more old-school design.

Then again, it’s a fitting choice given the military and historical setting.

Simply put, it’s about a Japanese missile destroyer (a navy warship) called Mirai that gets itself into a storm, but it was no ordinary storm.

Once Mirai gets away from the storm, its crew realizes that they’ve all time-traveled to 1942 — back to the Second World War.

Exciting, right?

Here’s the more interesting part: They must try their best not to change history. But can the crew keep themselves in the background when people are dying left and right?

11. Natsu no Arashi (Summer Storm!)

Natsu no Arashi anime screenshot

Interestingly enough, I didn’t catch this until last year — a full decade since its release.

But hey, this is an excellent example of “better late than never” because this is a fine mix of time travel and comedy.

Natsu no Arashi is about, again, a male teenager who meets a beautiful girl.

But Sayoko Arashiyama is far from an ordinary teenager.

She may not even be a teenager as Hajime Yasaka finds a photo of her in her 60s.

What’s going on? And why does Sayoko still look young?

Check out Natsu no Arashi. It’s made by Shaft so expect some visual delights.

10. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)

When They Cry anime screenshot

We’re getting closer to the highest ranking so let’s be really careful now. I did warn about spoilers, so be prepared.

When They Cry deceives its audience by portraying itself as another generic anime with a guy OP and a bunch of cute girls.

Only for it to actually be a murder mystery with a time loop to boot.

Also, it may even be the only horror and time travel anime out there.

One minute you’re seeing kids playing together, all smiles. The next, they’re splattered with blood and having edgy expressions.

Orange anime screenshot

Admittedly I hate what happened to the anime adaptation here (although the movie Orange: Future was way better in terms of animation quality and consistency).

I read the manga, and it had moments that could’ve catapulted the anime as a classic.

But the anime did not meet or exceed expectations.

Orange was just above average. But still good enough to warrant a spot here.

If you think the anime was good and made you cry and laugh, consider the gorgeous and much more emotional manga too.

8. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World)

ReZERO Starting Life in Another World

I think Re:Zero is a fine isekai and time travel anime.

It could’ve been like any typical isekai after all the hype for Sword Art Online. But it etched its own place in history.

Re:Zero makes you think that it’s just another guy getting transported to a fantasy world. But the time loop aspect elevates the series to new heights of dread and sheer desperation for Subaru.

It’s not just an escape to a better world with waifu material like Emilia and Rem, it’s overall a really engaging show. And I’m definitely excited for season 2 .

7. Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.)

Kimi no Na wa. anime

Yup, this is big spoiler territory.

I sure hope that you’ve already watched the critically acclaimed movie, which also broke records around the world — or that you’ve read the novel of the same name.

Because time travel is what made audiences gasp in the middle of the movie. Kimi no Na wa is seemingly just about two people living in different regions… but what viewers didn’t know was that they also lived in different periods.

I still remember the shock everyone had in the cinemas (because I saw this twice in theaters).

There is nothing quite like the audiovisual spectacle of a Makoto Shinkai film on the big screen. And the ending is so rewarding if you’ve watched Five Centimeters Per Second.

6. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei anime

Masaaki Yuasa needs no introduction after Devilman Crybaby garnered rave reviews from fans and critics all over the world, in part because it was available on Netflix.

But even before that, I was a huge fan of Yuasa’s directorial prowess.

He’s a man with impeccable skill, ensuring that both substance and style are way above the competition.

The Tatami Galaxy features rapid conversations (so you have to read fast if you prefer subtitles like me) and there’s so much going on when this is all about a young man’s life (and love life).

Watch him go through some sort of Groundhog Day, but in a much more artistic, magical manner.

It’s a rewarding experience across space and time (and tatami), I promise you that.

5. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime screenshot

At this point, I’m not sure which of my top picks have time travel as one of its biggest turning points.

This one has a certain episode in the latter half that completely turns it from an impressive series to arguably one of the best anime of all time.

You may not agree that it’s a “deconstruction” of the magical girl genre . But it’s clear evidence that Gen Urobuchi could change the game if he had the right team.

Also, this original anime looks breathtaking.

It’s dark, it’s exciting, it’s inspirational.

Shaft had a classic in their hands and they didn’t waste the opportunity.

4. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime screenshot

As one of Kyoto Animation’s first big hits, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya took the relatively small 2006 global anime community by storm.

It was hilarious, had a stellar set of characters, had a viral opening song, and had episodes that didn’t line up chronologically.

And yet the order of events didn’t ruin the story at all.

The nonlinear structure enabled a new way of looking at the character dynamics. And it made rewatches (in the chronological order) more rewarding.

Once you’ve watched the series (and bless you if you’ve seen the Endless Eight arc) go ahead and enjoy The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya .

3. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)

Girl Who Leapt Through Time anime screenshot

Like Masaaki Yuasa and Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda is one of the best anime directors today.

And he’s done many more amazing films besides this one: Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Boy and the Beast, just to name a few.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time works as well as it does because of how it didn’t just use time travel as a gimmick.

It thought of how to shape the character and the story as a whole, creating tension and developing emotional impact in the latter half.

Plus I think many of us can relate to Makoto Shonno. Spending the last year of high school knowing that life is about to change, and yet you’re unsure of your own future.

It’s thrilling, hilarious, and has a heart at its core.

2. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED)

Boku dake ga Inai Machi anime screenshot

Am I making a controversial choice by putting this so high on my list?

Not really.

Sure, not everyone was a fan of the adaptation. And I admit that the suspense thriller aspect to it was a bit heavy-handed.

But like with how I feel about Zankyou no Terror, ERASED has highs that are so high, they easily make up for the lows.

It’s an imperfect masterpiece in my eyes.

The first episode was a 10/10 with how it easily grabbed my attention by the end with the change in aspect ratio, signifying the drastic change in time… it’s really interesting.

ERASED has a killer OP from none other than Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and I still think that the birthday scene of Kayo is one of the most heart-wrenching yet simultaneously heartwarming moments in anime.

Also, (big spoiler ahead) I dislike that some fans think the show was bad just because the guy didn’t end up with the girl he saved(and attempted to save again and again) in the past.

Look, you don’t just get to marry someone because you saved their life. You save someone because it’s the right thing to do, not because you expect something in return.

1. Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate anime screenshot

Is there even any other anime that could be at the No. 1 spot?

It’s the first show that comes to mind if you ask most anime fans what the best time travel anime is. And for good reason.

Furthermore, Steins;Gate isn’t just lauded as the top time travel series ever.

It’s also in the running as possible the best anime in general, usually in competition with FMA: Brotherhood.

Steins;Gate is both an outstanding gateway show to anime and one that becomes rewarding once you’ve consumed a ton of anime.

Some claim that it’s overrated, but one thing’s for sure: It set the standard for what a time travel anime could achieve in terms of sheer brilliance and entertainment.

One of the most interesting history lessons you’ll ever take at the Singapore Flyer!

If you’ve not visited the Singapore Flyer in a while, you’re in for a surprise. Its two-storey indoor space has been completely transformed, with interactive, multi-sensory exhibits!

Just opened on 9 Dec 2020, the new Time Capsule will bring you through Singapore’s past and present in a way that’s never been seen before.

Singapore Flyer Time Capsule Launch - Singapore Flyer

Each themed space comes with high-tech displays and light projections, playing out Singapore’s transformation dating back to 700 years ago. Imagine a history lesson combined with stunning digital art, interactive games, and Instagrammable backdrops.

Humanoid robots are learning to fall well

Boston dynamics and agility are teaching their bipedal robots to brace for the inevitable.

time travelling robot

The savvy marketers at Boston Dynamics produced two major robotics news cycles last week. The larger of the two was, naturally, the electric Atlas announcement . As I write this, the sub-40 second video is steadily approaching five million views. A day prior, the company tugged at the community’s heart strings when it announced that the original hydraulic Atlas was being put out to pasture , a decade after its introduction.

The accompanying video was a celebration of the older Atlas’ journey from DARPA research project to an impressively nimble bipedal ’bot. A minute in, however, the tone shifts. Ultimately, “Farewell to Atlas” is as much a celebration as it is a blooper reel. It’s a welcome reminder that for every time the robot sticks the landing on video there are dozens of slips, falls and sputters.

I’ve long championed this sort of transparency. It’s the sort of thing I would like to see more from the robotics world. Simply showcasing the highlight reel does a disservice to the effort that went into getting those shots. In many cases, we’re talking years of trial and error spent getting robots to look good on camera. When you only share the positive outcomes, you’re setting unrealistic expectations. Bipedal robots fall over. In that respect, at least, they’re just like us. As Agility put it recently , “Everyone falls sometimes, it’s how we get back up that defines us.” I would take that a step further, adding that learning how to fall well is equally important.

The company’s newly appointed CTO, Pras Velagapudi, recently told me that seeing robots fall on the job at this stage is actually a good thing. “When a robot is actually out in the world doing real things, unexpected things are going to happen,” he notes. “You’re going to see some falls, but that’s part of learning to run a really long time in real-world environments. It’s expected, and it’s a sign that you’re not staging things.”

A quick scan of Harvard’s rules for falling without injury reflects what we intuitively understand about falling as humans:

 • Protect your head
 • Use your weight to direct your fall
 • Bend your knees
 • Avoid taking other people with you

As for robots, this IEEE Spectrum piece from last year is a great place to start.

“We’re not afraid of a fall—we’re not treating the robots like they’re going to break all the time,” Boston Dynamics CTO Aaron Saunders told the publication last year. “Our robot falls a lot, and one of the things we decided a long time ago [is] that we needed to build robots that can fall without breaking. If you can go through that cycle of pushing your robot to failure, studying the failure, and fixing it, you can make progress to where it’s not falling. But if you build a machine or a control system or a culture around never falling, then you’ll never learn what you need to learn to make your robot not fall. We celebrate falls, even the falls that break the robot.”

The subject of falling also came up when I spoke with Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter ahead of the electric Atlas’ launch. Notably, the short video begins with the robot in a prone position. The way the robot’s legs arc around is quite novel, allowing the system to stand up from a completely flat position. At first glance, it almost feels as though the company is showing off, using the flashy move simply as a method to showcase the extremely robust custom-built actuators.

“There will be very practical uses for that,” Playter told me. “Robots are going to fall. You’d better be able to get up from prone.” He adds that the ability to get up from a prone position may also be useful for charging purposes.

Much of Boston Dynamics’ learnings around falling came from Spot. While there’s generally more stability in the quadrupedal form factor (as evidenced from decades trying and failing to kick the robots over in videos), there are simply way more hours of Spot robots working in real-world conditions.

“Spot’s walking something like 70,000 kms a year on factory floors, doing about 100,000 inspections per month,” adds Playter. “They do fall, eventually. You have to be able to get back up. Hopefully you get your fall rate down — we have. I think we’re falling once every 100-200 kms. The fall rate has really gotten small, but it does happen.”

Playter adds that the company has a long history of being “rough” on its robots. “They fall, and they’ve got to be able to survive. Fingers can’t fall off.”

Watching the above Atlas outtakes, it’s hard not to project a bit of human empathy onto the ’bot. It really does appear to fall like a human, drawing its extremities as close to its body as possible, to protect them from further injury.

With a 99% success rate over about 20 hours of live demos, Digit still took a couple of falls at ProMat. We have no proof, but we think our sales team orchestrated it so they could talk about Digits quick-change limbs and durability. #ConspiracyTheories pic.twitter.com/aqC5rhvBTj — Agility Robotics (@agilityrobotics) April 6, 2023

When Agility added arms to Digit, back in 2019, it discussed the role they play in falling. “For us, arms are simultaneously a tool for moving through the world — think getting up after a fall, waving your arms for balance, or pushing open a door — while also being useful for manipulating or carrying objects,” co-founder Jonathan Hurst noted at the time .

I spoke a bit to Agility about the topic at Modex earlier this year. Video of a Digit robot falling over on a convention floor a year prior had made the social media rounds. “With a 99% success rate over about 20 hours of live demos, Digit still took a couple of falls at ProMat,” Agility noted at the time. “We have no proof, but we think our sales team orchestrated it so they could talk about Digits quick-change limbs and durability.”

As with the Atlas video, the company told me that something akin to a fetal position is useful in terms of protecting the robot’s legs and arms.

The company has been using reinforcement learning to help fallen robots right themselves. Agility shut off Digit’s obstacle avoidance for the above video to force a fall. In the video, the robot uses its arms to mitigate the fall as much as possible. It then utilizes its reinforcement learnings to return to a familiar position from which it is capable of standing again with a robotic pushup.

One of humanoid robots’ main selling points is their ability to slot into existing workflows — these factories and warehouses are known as “brownfield,” meaning they weren’t custom built for automation. In many existing cases of factory automation, errors mean the system effectively shuts down until a human intervenes.

"We'll be singing / when we're winning." 🔊 pic.twitter.com/51DYD1Avvg — Brian Heater (@bheater) August 17, 2021

“Rescuing a humanoid robot is not going to be trivial,” says Playter, noting that these systems are heavy and can be difficult to manually right. “How are you going to do that if it can’t get itself off the ground?”

If these systems are truly going to ensure uninterrupted automation, they’ll need to fall well and get right back up again.

“Every time Digit falls, we learn something new,” adds Velagapudi. “When it comes to bipedal robotics, falling is a wonderful teacher.”

X-Men ‘97 Resetting Entire Series In Finale?

Posted: May 4, 2024 | Last updated: May 6, 2024

The only thing more shocking about the quality of X-Men ‘’97 is how ruthless the show has been: we’ve seen our heroes betrayed, mutants massacred, and heroes like Rogue driven to attempted murder. The only thing more shocking about the quality of X-Men ‘’97 is how ruthless the show has been: we’ve seen our heroes betrayed, mutants massacred, and heroes like Rogue driven to attempted murder. Fans have collectively wondered how the show’s second season (which has already been greenlit by Disney) could top all of this insanity. However, I have some bad news, true believers: there is every reason to believe that the X-Men ‘97 finale will effectively reset the series by stopping the attack on Genosha.

Our strongest hints about the X-Men ‘97 finale came in the recent episode “Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 1.” When the team finally gets some extended face time with Cable (who is Cyclops’ recently born son, all grown up and back from the future), Wolverine asks the obvious question. Since Cable has both extensive knowledge of the timeline and the ability to travel into the past, the Ol’ Canucklehead wants to know, “Why the heck didn’t you stop Genosha?”

Time Travel Is Again The Answer

Our strongest hints about the X-Men ‘97 finale came in the recent episode “Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 1.” When the team finally gets some extended face time with Cable (who is Cyclops’ recently born son, all grown up and back from the future), Wolverine asks the obvious question. Since Cable has both extensive knowledge of the timeline and the ability to travel into the past, the Ol’ Canucklehead wants to know, “Why the heck didn’t you stop Genosha?”

To that blunt question, Cable responds that he did repeatedly try to save the mutant nation, and his talking tech chimes in to say that whenever they try to do so, they get pulled back into the future. This is what led to Cable’s heartbreaking farewell to his mother, Madelyne Pryor: he tried to stop the attack on Genosha but was yanked back to the future right before she was killed. Cable goes on to say that he has given up on changing the past in that way and is now content on getting revenge on Bastion, setting up our X-Men ‘97 season finale.

Cable Did Try To Save Genosha

To that blunt question, Cable responds that he did repeatedly try to save the mutant nation, and his talking tech chimes in to say that whenever they try to do so, they get pulled back into the future. This is what led to Cable’s heartbreaking farewell to his mother, Madelyne Pryor: he tried to stop the attack on Genosha but was yanked back to the future right before she was killed. Cable goes on to say that he has given up on changing the past in that way and is now content on getting revenge on Bastion, setting up our X-Men ‘97 season finale.

You see, Beast (who I’m betting is a big Doctor Who fan) brings up the idea that there are certain events that happen “across all timelines” and speculates that the fall of Genosha may be one such event. His theory is that time itself will keep stopping the would-be mutant savior. With respect to Beast, however, I think the X-Men ‘97 finale will involve Cable saving the day by getting help from someone who may be out of time in the most literal way.

Fixed Points In Time

You see, Beast (who I’m betting is a big Doctor Who fan) brings up the idea that there are certain events that happen “across all timelines” and speculates that the fall of Genosha may be one such event. His theory is that time itself will keep stopping the would-be mutant savior. With respect to Beast, however, I think the X-Men ‘97 finale will involve Cable saving the day by getting help from someone who may be out of time in the most literal way.

We discover in this episode that the reason Cable’s fellow time-traveling mutant Bishop is no longer with him is that they got ‘separated in the time stream.” You don’t need telepathic abilities and close proximity to Kevin Feige’s office to know that Bishop’s return by the end of the season is inevitable. And since the character was somehow lost in the flow of time, I believe that Bishop will find a way to help Cable finally complete his mission of changing the past by saving Genosha.

The Other Time-Travelling X-Man

We discover in this episode that the reason Cable’s fellow time-traveling mutant Bishop is no longer with him is that they got ‘separated in the time stream.” You don’t need telepathic abilities and close proximity to Kevin Feige’s office to know that Bishop’s return by the end of the season is inevitable. And since the character was somehow lost in the flow of time, I believe that Bishop will find a way to help Cable finally complete his mission of changing the past by saving Genosha.

Gambit’s death in X-Men ’97 was just as poignant. Here’s a character who’s spent his whole life trying to prove that he’s more than the sleazy “swamp rat” he resembles on the surface, finally getting a chance to show the world he’s a hero. And what b**a** line does he say right before he blows himself and one of the sentinels to smithereens?

“The name’s Gambit. Remember it.”

Chills. I got chills just typing that.

The Dark World Of X-Men 97

Since I’m already making predictions, I think such a plot twist in the X-Men ‘97 finale would split the fandom in a major way. On one hand, it was difficult not to be utterly horrified as we saw the apocalyptic attack on Genosha and the death of beloved characters like Gambit. If the timeline gets reset, all of those mutants will be saved, and this animated world wouldn’t have to be such a dark timeline that even Valerie Cooper accepts that “Magneto was right.”

A lesser show would have had Magneto fall in the middle of combat, but X-Men ’97 had him die while he was protecting a group of mutants with his forcefield. After all, what has been at the heart of all Magneto’s radical actions, if not the eventual safety of mutant kind? But that wasn’t enough for ’97; they had to call back to an earlier episode when Magneto told the Morlock Leach that he never had to be afraid again.

Not only are Magneto’s final words to the Morlocks right before they all die, but he says it in his native German because that’s likely what his mother said to him right before she and his father were taken away by Nazis. Talk about a show ripping your heart out!

Undoing Deaths Would Be A Disservice

On the other hand, countless fans across the world hate when shows hit the reset button like that, and for good reason. It hurts to watch our favorite characters suffer, but suffering is part of life, and our shared pain is how we grow alongside our most cherished shows. If the X-Men ‘97 finale hits the “undo” button on all of these character evolutions and plot developments, it would be hard not to conclude the show has been wasting our time the way Jubilee wastes quarters at the mall.

By now, you’ve probably watched the third episode of X-Men ’97, and you know that Mr. Sinister infected Cyclops and Jean Grey’s baby with an incurable techno-organic virus. This led to Bishop taking the child into the future to find a way to stop the virus. What you might not know is that the cute little baby that X-Men ’97 just introduced is destined to become future soldier Cable, and his personal hell is just beginning.

Hopefully Disney Doesn’t Take The Easy Way Out

Of course, I’m not the mutant Destiny, meaning I can’t clearly see into the future. It’s possible the X-Men ‘97 finale won’t take the easy way out and will keep our characters in this increasingly dark and scary world. If I’m right, though, and we decide to destroy this universe and build one with a better finale, we need to agree on something simple: the last one to the M’Kraan Crystal is a rotten bamf.

China releases world's first electric running humanoid robot 'Tiangong'

time travelling robot

China's first self-developed general-purpose humanoid robot "Tiangong" was unveiled at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area on Saturday.

"Tiangong" is also described as the world's first full-sized humanoid robot capable of running solely on electric drive.

Developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center Company, the robot can maintain a steady speed of six kilometers per hour. The robot is an independently developed humanoid robot platform poised for broader industry adoption.

The robot has an open source and compatible scalability. With such characteristics, other robot enterprises and scientific research units can directly study home services, industrial manufacturing and other industry applications according to the personalized needs of the market and users. It can further promote large-scale commercial applications.

An animation clip shows Tiangong walking. /CMG

Tiangong stands at a height of 1.63 meters and weighs 43 kilograms. It is equipped with multiple vision perception sensors. It boasts a processing power of 550 trillion operations per second, with high-precision inertial measurement units and 3D vision sensors. In addition, the robot is equipped with high-precision six-axis force sensors to provide accurate force feedback.

It has already demonstrated human-like running abilities and offers open-source compatibility for further expansion, facilitating broader commercial applications, according to a briefing by the developers.

The release of Tiangong coincides with the reveal of several AI technological breakthroughs at the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum (ZGC Forum), said Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh, founding executive director of Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk.

"I am quite optimistic about the prospects of the Chinese AI industrial sector. One of the things that China has excelled at is developing AI in a way that integrates into everyday life, providing meaningful and useful tools to people," he said.

Other AI robot products were also unveiled at this year's ZGC Forum, a state-level event for global exchanges and cooperation showcasing China's rapid development in cutting-edge innovation and technologies.
