Namibia Flying Safari – Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Windhoek (1 night)

Welcome to Windhoek!   On arrival   at Windhoek   International Airport you will be met and assisted by a Great Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel.

The balance of the afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Day 2-3 Windhoek / Etosha (2 nights)

Wake up to your first morning under an African sun.  After a leisurely breakfast, you are collected and transferred to Eros Airport for the beginning of your wing adventure across Namibia.

Your flight takes you north to the border of Etosha National Park. The following days are devoted purely to game drives in search of the abundant wildlife found in the park, which surrounds a parched salt desert known as the Etosha Pan. The park is home to 4 of the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard and rhino. Game viewing in the park is largely focused around the waterholes, an ideal places to sit and watch over 114 different game species, or for an avid birder, in excess of 340 bird species.

Day 4 Etosha / Damaraland  (1 night)

After a relaxed breakfast, the flight continues across the mountainous region of Damaraland to the UNESCO World Heritage site of   Twyfelfontein. In the afternoon you join a local ranger to explore this spectacular semi-arid desert in search of the elusive desert elephants that roam this area.

Your lodge is situated in close vicinity to the geological attractions that are visited in the afternoon or during the morning of the next day. The highlight of these attractions, Twyfelfontein, represents Namibia’s Only World Heritage Site and belongs to one of the world’s largest rock-art sites. Enjoy a visit this afternoon or tomorrow morning before flying on to your nest destination.

Day 5-6 Damaraland / Swakopmund (2 nights)

Leaving the majestic mountain ranges far below, travel past Namibia’s highest mountain – the   Brandberg   and across endless desert plains to the coastal town of Swakopmund. T he rest of the day is spent at leisure.

Swakopmund is often fondly referred to as the “playground of Namibia”, it has numerous activities, one of them being a  catamaran cruise exploring the marine life around the lagoon and   harbor   of Walvis Bay. You may get a chance to see swooping pelicans, seals, dolphins and – during the season – even whales,   sunfish   and turtles!

Day 7-8  Swakopmund / Sossusvlei  (2 nights)

Your flight takes off into the heart of the Namib desert at   Sesriem , the gateway to   Sossusvlei   and Dead Vlei. The afternoon can be spent at leisure or on an optional nature drive exploring the desert surrounding your lodge.

The following morning demands an early start. Entering the Namib   Naukluft   National Park with   the first rays of sunlight paint the mountains of sand into a variety of apricot, red and orange, contrasted against a crisp blue skyline. You will be captivated by the surreal   Deadvlei   surrounded by some of the highest dunes on earth and  Sossusvlei , where the dry   Tsauchab   River ends abruptly amongst dunes. Take the opportunity to walk up one of these majestic dunes to admire the desert landscape beneath.

Day 9 Sossusvlei / Windhoek / Departure

After breakfast you fly back to Windhoek, arriving in the late morning. You are met on arrival, any stored luggage is returned to you and then you are transferred to Josea Kutako International Airport for the departure of your homebound flight.

Namibia is awe-inspiringly impressive from all angles, but if we had to choose one way to marvel at the magnificent landscapes, it would be from a small plane, high up in the skies. And that’s exactly why we’ve come up with this ultimate Namibia flying safari. For six nights, you’ll swap four wheels (almost) for two wings, and travel across Namibia on a series of short flights. All that’s left to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery sweeping below you.

Your first two nights on the flying safari will be at Kwessi Dunes, before you swoop over the vast Namib Desert and the towering dunes of Sossusvlei from above. You’ll touch down briefly for a beach lunch in Swakopmund, and then back to the sky for an incredible flight over the Atlantic Coastline and inland to the Hoanib Valley for two nights. Leave the plane behind for the spectacular drive to the Skeleton Coast where you’ll stay at award-winning Shipwreck Lodge for a further two nights, before you hop back in the plane for a final flight across the interior of the country to Windhoek. It’s going to be difficult to choose a highlight…

NB This safari can be customised to include Etosha – please contact us for details!

Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek and fly to Kwessi Dunes, NamibRand Nature Reserve

flying safari namibia

You’ll be met by your guide at the airport and flown to Kwessi Dunes in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, just south of Sossusvlei. G&Ts at the ready!

Accommodations

Our lodges in Namibia are quirky, stylish and full of character. We think you’ll love them as much as we do, from the thatched, air-conditioned rooms at Kwessi Dunes, to the elegant tents at Hoanib Valley and the award-winning design of Shipwreck Lodge. All the lodges have ensuite bathrooms, plenty of hot water and airy main living areas, whilst both Kwessi and Hoanib have swimming pools – the perfect way to escape the desert heat. At Kwessi and Hoanib, you’ll eat dinner under the stars and retire to the campfire for post-dinner safari tales and digestifs, whilst at Shipwreck Lodge, you’ll dine in the ship-style dining room, surrounded by candelabras and old silverware.

Day 2: Kwessi Dunes, NamibRand Nature Reserve

flying safari namibia

Today, you’ll spend time exploring the magical NamibRand and Sossuvlei area. Whether you want to embark on all the activities, or just soak up the magic of the area, this is a day to remember.

In Namibia, the landscape is just as much of an attraction as the wildlife – and it’s even more mesmerising from the skies – but don’t forget your binos either, as there’s an astonishing variety of wildlife hidden in these desert plains.

In the Sossusvlei and NamibRand area, keep a lookout for springbok and oryx, as well as some of the rarer creatures like aardwolf. If you’ve got a penchant for birdlife, ask your guide to find the endemic dune lark, which is found nowhere but Namibia.

Day 3: Fly to Hoanib Valley Camp, Hoanib Valley

flying safari namibia

Hop back on the plane for a scenic flight over the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour, before touching down in Swakopmund for lunch. Then, it’s onward to Hoanib Valley Camp, over the dramatic Skeleton Coast and then inland to the beautiful interior of the country.

Day 4: Hoanib Valley Camp, Hoanib Valley

flying safari namibia

Spend today looking for desert-adapted giraffes, game driving through the sandy terrain or visiting the local Himba communities.

Valley are fascinating to watch, and you may also be lucky enough to spot desert lion and rhino. One certainty, however, is the desert-adapted giraffe. The icons of the area, they are also the focus of our conservation partners, Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

Day 5: Transfer to Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast

flying safari namibia

Get ready to enjoy the best transfer drive on the continent! You’ll pass incredible rock formations and desert-elephant digging for water, before arriving at the crashing waves and rolling dunes of the Skeleton Coast. Wow.

Day 6: Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast

flying safari namibia

Enjoy your time at the award-winning Shipwreck Lodge. Activities on offer include quad biking, visits to the Clay Castle and seal colony and game drives – or you may like to just put your feet up and admire the views.

At Shipwreck Lodge, expect giraffe, lion, baboons, elephant and elusive brown hyena in the dunes, whilst at the coast you’ll find hundreds of Cape fur seals at the Mowe Bay Seal Colony, and plenty of birds flitting through the chilly ocean spray.

Day 7: Departure

flying safari namibia

This morning you’ll meet the plane and fly back down the stunning Atlantic Coastline, before arriving back in Windhoek, or, if you’ve chosen to extend your trip to Etosha, you’ll make your way north for the safari of a lifetime.

Additional Information

When to go & what to pack:.

This trip can be done at any time of year, winter or summer, rain or shine. Generally, the climate in Namibia is typical of an arid area but it’s not unusual for there to be seasonal variations across the country. Be prepared for anything, but our general predictions would be as follows… Summer (January to March), is the hottest time of year and if it’s going to rain, it will be now. In April and May, the temperature cools down a little and June to October are the winter months, characterised by balmy days, blue skies and lots of sunshine. At the end of the year, the temperature heats up again and you may encounter some thunderstorms here and there.

If you’re travelling in the winter months, make sure to pack a lightweight jacket and even a pair of gloves and a scarf for the chilly mornings on the coast. In summer, light, loose clothes are best – but perhaps bring a jumper too!

Policies & Access:

Child Policy: Please enquire with reservations.

Disabled Access: Please enquire with reservations.

Wifi: Wifi is available throughout this trip.

Excluded: Expenses of a personal nature, such as laundry, telephone expenses, gratuities, and porterage fees; any additional meals or activities; international flights and related taxes; visa fees where relevant; cancellation, baggage, medical, and evacuation insurance; any new government taxes or levies which are beyond our control.

Namibia is a big, beautiful country, and there’s no better way to get around than by flying into your first destination, then flying between the rest. The decision of whether to fly is about both the convenience of your trip and how best to enjoy it. Flying means that you save traveling time (which leaves more time for experiencing the places you came so far to see) when compared to getting around by road. A fly-in safari also enables you to enjoy Namibia’s amazing scenery from above, with one incredible view unfolding after another. Yes, a fly-in safari can be expensive. But it will be an experience of a lifetime.

7 Questions About Namibia Fly-in Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

flying safari namibia

Are fly-in tours recommended in Namibia?

“Fly-in safaris are among the best ways to explore Namibia. This is a very big country, with long distances between many of the attractions. To make the most of your holiday time, flying allows you to minimize the time you spend getting between places and maximize how long you spend in each destination itself. It also allows you to enjoy fabulous views of the country as you travel around. Another advantage of a Namibia fly-in safari is that it can take you to places that you couldn’t otherwise reach. Some tented camps, protected areas and remote landscapes (especially in the country’s north and northwest) cannot be reached by road. By flying into a remote airstrip, you’re able to add experiences that very few travelers get to enjoy.”

Do I need to charter a plane on a fly-in safari in Namibia?

“It’s unlikely that you will need to charter your own plane, as flying arrangements are usually taken care of by your tour operator or the accommodation where you’re flying. Although small, these planes often carry travelers and safari workers between accommodations and towns, so you may share the plane journey with others. If you’re on a private Namibia fly-in safari, you may have a very small plane to yourself, but it’s highly unlikely that you will need to charter the plane yourself. You will, of course, need to pay for your seat on the plane (or perhaps the whole plane for a private safari). These prices are included in the quoted price for most safari packages, especially for fly-in safaris, but always ask what’s included in any quote.”

What are the luggage restrictions on a fly-in trip in Namibia?

“Most internal or charter flights in Namibia are on very small planes and most of these impose strict limits on how much luggage you can bring. It can vary from one air company to the next, but on most such flights you won’t be allowed to take more than one suitcase or backpack of 15kg/33lb, plus one piece of carry-on baggage. These restrictions catch out many travelers who arrive in Namibia on international airlines that allow checked-in baggage to weigh at least 20kg/44lb, and sometimes even up to 30kg/66lb. If you arrive in the country with a suitcase weighing more than 15kg/33lb, your tour operator will be able to arrange for some of your luggage to be stored. Remember, however, that if your entire time in Namibia is part of a fly-in safari, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to carry any of the overweight items with you anywhere, in which case you’re better off traveling light in the first place.”

Are the small aircraft used in Namibia safe and reliable?

“Safaris involving flights in Namibia are overwhelmingly safe. Most companies operating fly-in safaris have good safety records: many of the pilots who’ll fly you around have decades of experience and planes are modern and well maintained. Tourism is a major income earner for Namibia and everyone involved in the industry understands the importance of the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s safest destinations. For that reason alone, ensuring that your safari is low-risk is taken very seriously. While no form of travel can ever be guaranteed to be completely safe, getting around by plane is both reliable and wonderfully scenic.”

Can I take photos from the air on a fly-in trip?

“Yes, you can, and the results are often magnificent. When boarding the aircraft for your trip, make sure that you have your camera or phone in your hand. There’s nothing worse than discovering that it’s in the suitcase at the back of the plane at a time when you can’t take off your seatbelt and get up from your seat. Most flights on small planes in Namibia do not have allocated seats: you usually take the best available seat when you board. Before getting on the plane, ask the pilot which side of the aircraft will have the best views as you fly and try to get a window seat as you board. It may not make any difference (the views may be just as good on both sides), but it might. Try to avoid sitting right above the wing, as this can obstruct your view. Remember also that plane windows cannot be opened, so avoid any particularly dirty windows if possible!”

What is the typical cost of a fly-in safari in Namibia?

“Fly-in safaris can be expensive. Flying is easily the most expensive way to get around, and if you take a number of flights on your trip and stay in luxury accommodation when you’re on dry land, the costs can quickly add up. Prices for fly-in safari packages can also vary depending on how many days you’ll be spending on the ground between flights, the length of your safari, and whether you’re on a private or group safari. Even if you’re on a private fly-in safari, you may share an aircraft with other travelers as you move between destinations. With such variables, any attempt at estimating the cost can never be truly accurate. But as a starting point, expect to pay a minimum of US$500 per person per day for your Namibia fly-in safari, although most such trips cost closer to US$1000 per person per day, more if you’re on a private safari and have the plane just for you.”

Can I combine flying and driving between destinations?

“Most safari tour operators will happily arrange a mixture of flying and driving between destinations. It’s a good way to travel. It will significantly reduce the cost when compared to a trip where you’re only flying from one place to the next. More than that, it’s a wonderful combination that enables you to enjoy a holiday with both aerial, big-picture views and more intimate, up-close encounters with locals along the African road. Experiencing both will give you a really good understanding of the country and the places you visit. It's important that you discuss all of this with your tour operator before they provide you with a quote. Some will assume that you want all flights or all road transfers, because that is a more common occurrence. But most tour operators should be able to organize the kind of package that you want.”

It is part of the Namib Desert, various sections of which have conservation status, namely the Namib-Naukluft Park in the south, the Skeleton Coast Park in the north (between the Ugab and the Kunene rivers) and the Iona Park in Angola. The coastline and adjoining Namib Desert form a sparsely populated area with landscape, animal and plant diversity, which varies from region to region.

THIS TRIP IS FOR YOU, IF:

  • You're up for adventure
  • You love the high-life
  • You're a sucker for great food and wine

THIS TRIP IS NOT FOR YOU, IF:

  • You think safaris should stay on the Discovery Channel
  • You'd rather stay put than explore
  • You can't stand the heat

Welcome to Namibia!

Upon arrival at Windhoek International Airport, you will be met by our guides where you’ll hit the skies again as we begin our onward journey to the Kwessi Dunes in the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

After checking in at the camp, you’ll be pinching yourself… wondering if all of this is real!

Our camp is lovely and welcoming and offers one of the best services we have ever had. Each room is luxurious and comfortable, but if you’re looking for an experience of a different kind and are brave enough, their open-air “rooms” literally allow you to sleep out under the stars.

Enjoy a ride out to the desert where you’ll spot some oryxes and other wild animals native to the region.

Once back at camp, retire to your super comfortable tent for a restful sleep in preparation for an early start tomorrow.

Today you’ll wake up to a delicious breakfast before starting the day’s adventure. We’ll enjoy a “walking tour” through the area, joining a local guide to learn about the desert and the environment. You’ll be surprised to learn what you can find in the desert!

Later we’ll go on another Desert Safari Drive exploring the magic in the NamibRand Nature Reserve and the Sossusvlei area; the largest private nature reserve in Africa full of mountains, savannahs, and dunes to spot a great diversity of animals in the plains.

If you’re planning on crossing some things off your bucket list, join the Optional Hot Air Balloon Ride for some amazing aerial views!

If you are up for some adrenaline, join an Quad bike tour through the dunes to complete the day before resting on your last day at camp.

Days 3 & 4

It’s time to hit the skies again… hop back on our private plane for a scenic flight over more famous sites before touching down in Swakopmund for lunch, and heading to the Hoanib Valley Camp; the glamping ground you’ll call home for the next two days.

After landing and settling in, you’ll get a sneak peek of the Himba tribe; one of the few cultures that have never been colonized. Relish in their authenticity and purity, as they showcase their traditional nomadic culture.

Join the game drive and spot the wildlife that calls the region home. Hoanib Valley Camp is teeming with elephants and desert-adapted giraffes and it’s here where you’ll learn how the camp aims to preserve these animals through the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. You may even be lucky enough to sport a desert lion or herd of rhinos.

Today you’ll head out on a scenic drive to the Skeleton Coast where you’ll stay in the award-winning Shipwreck Lodge. This waterfront accommodation is one of the most unique glamping experiences we’ve ever had. On the drive, you’ll spot giraffes, baboons, and hyenas hiding in the dunes, before heading back to enjoy the incredible architecture and ambiance of the lodge.

A short drive to the coast and your eyes will spot hundreds of Cape fur seals who call the bay home. Here the birdlife comes to play, with plenty of species flitting through the cold ocean spray.

Join the Quad bikes for a blood-pumping drive through the sand dunes at sunset, before heading back to the lodge to unwind in your surrounds.

Today is your last full day of glamping, and we’ll enjoy a beach picnic with a glass of bubbles in hand, taking in the incredible landscapes and escaping the heat with an ocean dip.

Tonight  we’ll meet for a sumptuous farewell dinner as we say goodbye to new friends and talk about everything we’ve experienced during the week.

If you haven’t got enough of exploring the dunes, join the last Quad bike ride as you take one last moment to appreciate the vastness of the desert.

Rise and shine for your last day in Namibia.

Before heading home, we’ll visit the unusual natural rock formations that litter the Skeleton Coast, known as the Clay Castles.

Afterward, you’ll board our private plane and take the breathtaking journey back down the stunning coast before arriving at Windhoek to head home or onward to your next adventure.

Our flying safari is hands down the bougiest way to experience Namibia’s vast desert and natural beauty.

About Flying Safaris

The Skeleton Coast flying safari is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences you wish you could bottle and keep by your bed in case you feel like escaping reality for a few minutes.

Far beyond the paradigms of everyday life, the multi-stop safari takes you to places you could only have imagined. Operated by the Schoeman family, the trip is a journey through Namibia’s phenomenal desert scenery; playground to the four brothers who guide you since childhood.

From the rocky Khomas Hochland west of Windhoek, over the red sands of the Namib and up the thrashing Atlantic Coast, the journey is one of continual change. Flying low in a Cessna 210, you can really appreciate the beauty of nature’s design, and every now and then, you set down to get a closer look. Your journey over a number of days will fly you over dramatic skeleton coast and up to the border with Angola in the Kunene region.

Tailor made

WHY WE LOVE FLYING SAFARIS

Much of the pleasure of the trip is in the many surprises each day and these shouldn’t be spoiled here, suffice to say that every moment is unique and special.

The family own a series of small rustic camps where you stay overnight. As the only visitors in an otherwise empty area, it is peace and quiet at its most extreme.

BEST TIME TO GO ON A SKELETON COAST FLYING SAFARI

The flying safari operates throughout the year but with a fog belt, which is often present on the coast, temperatures on your trip could vary considerably.

Temperatures tend to be warm in the mornings and usually start cooling off in the afternoons. The lack of moisture, a clear night sky often brings in rather chilly nights.

“Over the years the Schoemans have perfected what they do, not only the complicated logistics of supplying and maintaining such remote camps, and the planes and Land Rovers, but the pacing and presentation of the safari. It unfolds like a three-act play, with thrills, laughs and intermissions in all the right places, and a steadily building a sense of drama.

THE SCHOEMAN BROTHERS

Set up in 1977 Skeleton Coast Safaris is operated by four brothers who had the Skeleton Coast as their playground growing up.

Their father’s passion and enthusiasm for the desert rubbed off and today the Schoeman brothers are regarded as the experts on the semi-desert of Namibia.

flying safari namibia

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

By day you’ll land on beaches in the middle of nowhere, touch down in remote desert canyons that feel like they’ve never seen a human.

Fly in intense evening light over magical landscapes populated with magnificently marked oryx, run down monstrous dunes and crawl into caves to discover bushman rock art.

flying safari namibia

AN EXPERIENCE LIKE NOTHING ELSE

The danger these days, with too much information too readily available, is that you might – if you’re unlucky – discover too much about this trip before you get there.

All we can say is that this would be a real shame. Resist the urge to over research this, trust to more than 40 years of Schoeman know-how and you’ll most likely be letting yourself in for a treat that you’ll never forget.

At the end of the safari, you truly feel as though you have trodden where very few people have been before and that is indeed a privilege.

Itinerary overview

Days 1 & 2: Fly from Windhoek to Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Sossusvlei

Days 3 & 4: Fly north to Torra Conservancy, Damaraland

Days 5 & 6: Fly to Ongava Game Reserve bordering Etosha National Park

Day 7 : Return flight to Windhoek

Itinerary in detail

Flying from Windhoek, you'll enjoy views of the beautiful landscapes of Namibia on your way to the Namib Desert. You'll spend the next two nights at the luxurious Kulala Lodge in the wilderness reserve with easy access to the towering burnt-red dunes of Sossusvlei.

Drifting over the Namib Desert in a hot air balloon.

You can also upgrade to the exclusive Little Kulala if budget and availability permit. Up early to take advantage of the soft morning light, you'll visit the dunes and the fascinating Sesriem Canyon and enjoy scenic sundowners.

Hot air balloon excursions are a terrific way to experience the light, silence and enormity of this ancient desert (extra cost, weather permitting).

Departing Sossusvlei, you'll head northwards with a scenic flight over the Namib Desert to get a view of the incredible 'dune sea' as well as catching a glimpse of one of the famous shipwrecks or old mining camps. Landing for refuelling at Swakopmund, you'll head inland to the flat-topped mountains and arresting landscapes of Damaraland where you'll spend the next two nights at Damaraland Camp .

This arid area is famous for its diverse wildlife as well as the desert-adapted elephant and black rhino. It's also an outstanding example of a successful partnership with the local Torra community.

Fly onwards to Ongava Game Reserve by light aircraft, getting a look at the stark contrast between the barren, rocky landscapes of Damaraland and Kaokoveld and the greener, grassy plains of Ongava and Etosha National Park. Your home for the next two nights will be either Ongava Tented Camp or Ongava Lodge . The tented camp overlooks a busy waterhole that attracts myriad wildlife.

Elephants gathering at a waterhole in Etosha

The lodge is built around a rocky outcrop with views of vast plains. At night, its waterhole is floodlit and you can watch for hours as the many night visitors come to quench their thirst.

After a short but unforgettable overview of Namibia and its rich landscapes, you'll transfer by light aircraft to Windhoek's Hosea Kutako International Airport for your onward travel arrangements.

The focus of this flying route is undoubtedly the Skeleton Coast. With its misty beaches, enigmatic shipwrecks and variety of unique flora and fauna, the coastline is like nowhere on earth. Most of the region, and the camps that are hidden in the wildest of corners, are only accessible by light aircraft and from there, you’ll use 4x4s (or your own two feet) to explore. For the ultimate expedition, embark on a short flying safari of the region, landing on deserted beaches and spotting desert elephant from the air. Turn the route into an iconic Namibia experience with a stop at Sossusvlei (towering dunes and sleep-outs under gazillion-star skies), followed by Etosha (epic wildlife and a safari that will knock your socks off).

Sam Gee - Africa Specialist, Red Savannah

SAMANTHA GORDON

Africa travel specialist, day 1 arrive windhoek – sossusvlei.

You will be met on arrival in Windhoek and assisted with boarding your scheduled light aircraft shuttle transfer to Sossusvlei. On arrival in Sossusvlei you’ll be met by a member of the Little Kulala team and transferred directly to the camp. Situated in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Little Kulala is a luxury desert retreat. A library, wine cellar, boutique and lounge provide plenty of space to relax, while the al-fresco dining area ensures views of the African night sky. Air-conditioned “kulalas” blend perfectly into the desert landscape, each equipped with private plunge pool, indoor and outdoor shower and a rooftop star bed for incredible star gazing. Try to get an early night though, as you’ve an early start tomorrow.

Overnight: Little Kulala

Day 2 - 3 Wolwedans, NamibRand Nature Reserve

Rise before dawn and head straight to the Sossusvlei dunes, to which Little Kulala has its own exclusive access gate. Watch the sun rise over the dunes and take the opportunity to capture some stunning photographs as dramatic shadows are cast over the orange landscape. Return to the lodge for breakfast before being transferred privately to Wolwedans Dunes Camp, with a journey time of around 90 minutes. Wolwedans Dunes Camp sits atop a plateau, commanding unrivalled views over the breath-taking landscape. Simply constructed from canvas and wood, the nine chalets are designed to allow nature in while offering the comforts of a more permanent lodge. Private verandahs lead straight onto the sand and into the wilderness beyond. The main lodge is home to lounges, decks (perfect for sundowners), a library, wine cellar and two dining rooms. There is no shortage of space here, both inside and out.

Overnight: Wolwedans Dunes Lodge

Day 4 - 5 Kaokoland, northwest Namibia

This morning you will be taken to the airstrip for your private light aircraft flight to Kaokoland and Hoanib Valley Camp. Weather and fog-permitting you will have some stunning views of the desoltae Skeleton Coast en-route. In the heart of north-western Namibia, Kaokoland is characterised by a varied landscape of mountains, dunes, and expanses of desert with a scattering of nomadic Himba families. Hoanib Valley Camp is the result of a wonderful partnership between the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and local communities which has proved to be immensely successful. With just six tents, the camp has a very exclusive feel and all the materials used to build it were sourced locally, as was the hand-crafted furniture and it is, of course, completely solar powered.

Overnight: Hoanib Valley Camp

Day 6 - 7 Ongava Private Game Reserve

Fly today to your final Namibian destination, Ongava Private Game Reserve, on the border of Etosha National Park. Spend two days here immersing yourself in superb game viewing with expert guides both within the private 33,000-hectare reserve and in Etosha National Park itself. Stay at the charming Ongava Tented Camp with its eight spacious Meru-style tents, all with private decks. The main area boasts a swimming pool and overlooks a very popular waterhole where you’re likely to see game coming to drink at any hour of the day, though sometimes they prefer to simply drink from the pool.

Overnight: Ongava Tented Camp

Day 8 Departure

Transfer to Ongava’s airstrip and transfer to Windhoek by private light aircraft for your international flight home.

The itinerary may also be customised to include a wildlife safari in Etosha.

Itinerary in Brief

2 Nights  Hoanib Valley Camp

2 Nights Shipwreck Lodge

OPTIONAL:  2 Nights Onguma Tented Camp

10Hoanib Valley Camp Arial tents at dusk

This flying safari begins in Windhoek, where you’ll meet your pilot and take to the skies for the flight to Kwessi Dunes!

Spend two days exploring the magic that is NamibRand and Kwessi Dunes. The vastness of the area makes for the ideal place to explore on quad bike, hot air balloon or a helicopter flight. The sunset from one of the red dunes with G&T in hand will leave you speechless, guaranteed!

Board your plane and head north west over Sossusvlei and along the coast viewing where ‘desert meets ocean’ and all the shipwrecks from yonder year. Do a quick stopover in Swakopmund for refuelling and lunch before you head up the REAL skeleton Coast, destination Hoanib Valley Camp. Spend two days in one of the most scenic locations and camps in Africa! Search for desert adapted animals, including giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. Also meet the local Himba, this is as good at it gets!

Then leave the plane behind, get onboard a 4×4 and head down the Hoanib River towards the coast, with a chance to see the large elephant herds that calls this home. This day trip is one of the most scenic in Africa and an unforgettable experience! In the afternoon arrive at the coast with white sand dunes replacing the harsh terrain. You have arrived at one of the most remote camps in Africa, Shipwreck Lodge.

Spend two days on the real Skeleton Coast for that eerie and mysterious feeling whilst enjoying the many activities on offer. At night sleep in your cosy cabin amongst the dunes with a log fire to keep you warm. Once again just magical, leaving you in awe!

On the last morning fly back to Windhoek or continue for two nights at Etosha for the best game viewing in Namibia! The itinerary can be designed to any of the camps or lodges at Etosha.

There are scheduled departures for the 6-night tour every Sunday throughout the year, from March 2021.

Frankly, this is one of the VERY BEST tours in the whole of Africa!

1Kwessi Dunes Dunescapes from the air

Detailed Itinerary

Night 1 and 2: namibrand - kwessi dunes.

Namibia is awe-inspiringly impressive from all angles, but viewing the landscapes from a small plane, high in the sky, is magical. This flying safari begins in Windhoek, where you’ll meet your pilot and take to the skies for the flight to Kwessi Dunes in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. As you near the reserve, you’ll fly over the iconic, blood-red dunes stretching for as far as the eye can see.

ACCOMMODATION:

2 nights at Kwessi Dunes, a classic canvas-and-thatch lodge in the heart of the striking NamibRand Nature Reserve that offers an escape from the modern world and a chance to reconnect with the wild.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Day trip to the dunes of Sossusvlei (included).
  • Morning and afternoon scenic drives and walks in the NamibRand Nature Reserve.
  • Quad biking.
  • Hot air ballooning and heli flights (at an extra cost).
  • Star gazing; the NamibRand is Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve.

Nights 3 and 4: Damaraland - Hoanib Valley Camp

This morning, it’s back to the plane for a flight towards the Atlantic Coast!

As the plane veers northwards, you’ll pass the Eduard Bohlen, one of the most famous shipwrecks on the coastline that came adrift in 1909, as well as Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour. You’ll then land in Swakopmund for a seafood lunch on the beach and a brief tour of the quaint town, before continuing north in the plane. This dramatic coastline was nicknamed the “gates to hell” by Portuguese sailors who had to navigate the powerful currents in their quest to round the Cape of Good Hope, and the Atlantic Ocean’s power is visible from the air as it hits the rocky coastline. From the air, glimpses of the remnants of shipwrecks are still visible and a stark reminder of nature’s power.

The plane will then turn inland toward the Hoanib Valley and it’s now that you’ll start to appreciate the mindboggling vastness of the country…

2 nights at Hoanib Valley Camp, an elegant tented camp located amongst the towering mountains and sand dunes of north-western Namibia.

  • Morning and afternoon desert game drives to search for desert-adapted giraffe, elephant, lion and rhino.
  • Learn about the giraffe research conducted in the area.
  • Nature walks through the dry riverbeds and dunes. • Spending a morning or afternoon with the local Himba communities.

Nights 5 and 6: Skeleton Coast - Shipwreck Lodge

Today, you’ll swap two wings for four wheels for the drive to the Skeleton Coast.

The full-day journey is one of the most spectacular drives on the continent, and you will travel along the ephemeral Hoanib River, home to large herds of elephant. From there, the route follows the course of the Hoarusib River, where dry plains give way to a clay-baked landscape, and as the salty sea breeze begins to pick up, so the landscape turns to white sand dunes.

2 nights at the award-winning Shipwreck Lodge, designed to resemble the shipwrecks that line the hauntingly beautiful Skeleton Coast.

ACTIVITIES :

  • Trips to the Mowe Bay seal colony, including stops at the Suiderkus and Karimona shipwrecks, Westies diamond mine, and the remains of the Ventura Bomber.
  • Sundowner drives to the roaring dunes. • Full day 4×4 Hoarusib River excursions, including the Clay Castles and wildlife spotting.
  • Beach lunches.
  • Quad biking and sand boarding.

OPTIONAL- Nights 7 and 8: Etosha - Onguma Tented Camp

Add on two nights at the Onguma Private Reserve, that shares a border with the famous Etosha National Park in the east. The reserve offers unspoiled landscapes and a sense of tranquillity and solitude. Wildlife-wise, you’ll find lion, cheetah and many of Namibia’s fascinating desert species, but the reserve is probably most famous for its strong population of black and white rhino. Game drives into Etosha National Park are also on offer.

The two nights can also be done at any of the other lodges or camps around Etosha.

Namibia Fly-in Safaris

Namibia is vast, which means distances between destinations are vast too. Want to get a real perspective of her grandeur and skip on long hours on the road? Take to the skies. Once a dream for all but the exclusive elite, a Namibia fly-in safari is now an affordable alternative to a private guided or self-drive safari and you get to reach those far flung remote corners.

A Namibia flying safari means less time travelling and more time to enjoy each destination. Plus you can go further in a day, reach those exclusive remote areas and camps and you get to experience her ever-changing and vast endless landscapes from above. A whole new perspective and one worth every penny.

Take a private charter - travel alone in your own private aircraft with your own private pilot or opt for a seat on a set scheduled flight. Take the latter and while you might not fly direct, you’ll be sharing the aircraft which makes this the ideal option for individual legs on flight routes to save on costs. Fly your entire route or combine it with a self-drive safari or private guided safari to explore by air and land.

Namibia is phenomenal either way. On a fly-in safari, she is simply spectacular and breath-taking from above. You’ll be jet setting from the moment you arrive. We’ll have you at some suitable other worldly location within hours of touch down.

Take a look at our most popular Namibia fly-in safaris to get started or speak to a Travel Expert to design a fly-in safari of Namibia tailored just for you.

Accommodation in Windhoek

flying safari namibia

Housed in a turreted castle built by Count Schwerin for his fiancee and with fabulous views over Windhoek, this Relais & Chateaux property is hands down the most luxurious place to stay in the capital city.

The sixteen rooms are contemporary and chic with a traditional twist, very well-equipped and highly comfortable. A quiet sanctuary in the midst of the city, the hotel’s gardens and pool are a joy to relax in and a nearby golf course means getting in a couple of holes before your flight home or a good way to begin your trip, is pleasingly straightforward.

A fantastic restaurant and with tables set up on the wonderful terrace outside, means very few guests choose to dine out.

flying safari namibia

Your home before you venture off into the barren and beautiful Namibian Desert, this stylish boutique hotel is hidden away in the Eastern corner of Namibia’s capital and only proclaimed city, Windhoek.

The city itself is the seat of the country’s cultural and administrative powers but despite this, it remains one of the smallest capitals in the world with just 250,000 residents. The Olive reflects Windhoek’s small size, providing a cosy but luxurious bolt-hole with great access to the surrounding wilderness.

Reminders of the prevalent Namibian culture are spread throughout the hotel as the modern is combined with the traditional. Rough-hewn wooden benches sit on plush carpets around sculpted granite coffee tables, animal-skin rugs lay beneath large beds covered in crisp white cotton and wide glass doors lead out onto your personal terrace for a view across the small city.

flying safari namibia

Windhoek is one of the smallest capital cities in the world with a population of just 234,000, but it is home to some fascinating buildings with typical German architecture. You could also visit the National Botanical Gardens which has the densest stand of mountain aloes in Namibia. The restaurants in town are good with delicious game meat on offer to those who fancy trying it.

Set high on a hill overlooking Ongava Private Reserve’s plains along the south-west border of Etosha National Park, Little Ongava comprises just three luxury villas, offering privacy and the utmost comfort.

Each of the thatched villas feels like a home, with a king sized bed, beautiful open bathroom, fireplace, private plunge pool and veranda making the most of the surrounding panorama.

A board walk snakes through the rocks connecting the villas to a main lounge and dining area that looks down onto a watering hole below, a real draw to wildlife throughout the night.

Activities in the reserve include game drives, rhino tracking, nature walks, birding and use of a wildlife hide. There are also excursions into the neighbouring Etosha National Park.

flying safari namibia

Ongava Lodge is situated on the slopes of a rocky outcrop within Ongava Reserve and its surrounding scenery is astoundingly attractive with large open plains blending into Mopane tree woodlands and granite ridges.

14 rock-and-thatch en-suite chalets, one of which is a family suite with two bedrooms. The main lounge, dining and pool area is situated on the foothills of the Ondundozonanandana Range, overlooking a floodlit waterhole and a vast beautiful plain. You’ll be accommodated in luxury air-conditioned thatched chalets with private veranda, all with en-suite bathrooms.

This lovely property offers you the full Etosha experience whilst providing superb accommodation and service, as well as night drives and nature walks on the reserve.

flying safari namibia

At the foot of one of Ongava Game Reserve’s dolomite hills, the Tented Camp sits immersed in mopane woodland that is rife with game and birdlife.

There are seven large, classic safari tents sat on decks with shaded verandas from which you can watch wandering antelope. Inside, you’ll find a large bed leading around to an en suite bathroom and an open-air shower. There is also a family suite consisting of two tents linked by a walkway that can sleep four people.

The main area, built of stone, canvas and thatch, fronts onto a busy waterhole where much of the reserves wildlife can be viewed while floating in the swimming pool.

Enjoy game drives and guided walks within the expansive reserve itself, a great place to spot both black and white rhino, or take excursions into the adjacent Etosha National Park to see it’s stunning salt pan.

flying safari namibia

The Onguma Fort is built in the perfect spot to give guests arguably one of the best sunset views in the whole of Namibia overlooking the beautiful scarceness of the Etosha Pans, bedecked with its wild animals and hundreds of camel thorn trees.

Upon arriving at The Fort, you will be received by a very friendly team of staff, and the massive raw walls, stunning stone cladded features and a huge tower with the views toward Etosha and Fisher’s Pan from within the private Onguma Game Reserve. Combining a tangibly ethnic African feel with a touch of Moroccan and Indian, plus a selection of the most beautiful antique windows and doors, the Fort’s decoration is both surreal and authentic.

Twelve mini suites, all situated adjacent to the Main Fort extending on both sides to the south and the north, each is completely private and about 50 metres apart from one another. They are equipped with a bar fridge, telephone and an air cooling system for those warmer days. The spacious bathroom has both an inside shower as well as an outside shower area. From every area of the room, wooden decks lead you towards the outside seating area and sun loungers for just relaxing and enjoying the extraordinary view.

The one and only Sultan Suite is situated inside the Main Tower of the main complex. It has a large, beautifully designed bedroom that leads into a lounge area and out onto a private viewing deck. The lounge is equipped with a satellite television system, a bar fridge and telephone facilities. And for those warm evenings, you have an air cooling system as well. The large bathroom has a wonderful open shower area, as well as a bath in which to relax and reflect upon your day’s experiences.

flying safari namibia

Onguma marries the timeless appeal of a tented safari camp with sleek contemporary twists. With only seven (standalone) tented rooms arranged in a U-shape around an active waterhole, there’s an added intimacy and thrill to your stay in Onguma Game Reserve.

Stylish, natural sophistication is employed throughout the camp, including the rooms that each feature en-suite bathrooms with a bath and outdoor shower. Each of the seven exquisitely styled tents are on a raised platform with a large private deck that overlooks the waterhole.

The two guest lounges have plush sofas and armchairs, wooden furnishings and bright cushions, welcoming guests to unwind after a day of exploring the reserve. Sunloungers beckon beside the alluring infinity pool.

Dinner is served under a thatched roof with completely opened sides, allowing guests to watch the floodlit waterhole while they dine on delightful safari cuisine. Giraffe, antelope, zebra and the occasional lion are known to visit the waterhole.

The camp has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere but as it’s not fenced children under 12 are not allowed.

flying safari namibia

Spend your days on safari and on scheduled game drives to spot the impressive selection of wildlife. Depending on which lodge or camp you choose to stay at, there will be a range of other activities on offer for you to make the most of your time here.

Wilderness Serra Cafema is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia on the banks of the Kunene River  in the Hartmann Valley. Undoubtedly amongst the most remote camps in Southern Africa, Serra Cafema is only reachable by light aircraft which adds to the exclusivity of this beautiful property.

Wilderness Serra Cafema is an intimate, peaceful camp with a unique mix of rustic and luxury elements nestled amongst the shady Albida trees on the banks of the Kunene. Rapids just below camp provide a calming ambiance with guests often lulled into dreamland by the gurgling waters after a day exploring one of the driest, starkly beautiful regions in the world.

Accommodation at here consists of eight riverside Meru-style canvas and thatched villas on spacious, elevated decks blended smoothly into the picturesque surroundings. Each fully furnished tent has an en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan and mosquito nets. A late afternoon spent lounging on the front deck soaking up the breathtaking vistas of this contrasting wilderness is an absolute must.

flying safari namibia

The impact of your stay:

  • Serra Cafema is located in the Marienfluss Conservancy, an area leased from the Himba community, a semi-nomadic tribe rooted in this region for centuries. These conservancies serve as protective shields, preserving the land and environment from threats like industrial farming while ensuring the well-being of local communities. The strong bond with the Himba led to continuous pandemic support, funding a community garden, providing seeds, and installing a solar borehole.
  • Wilderness has established Children in the Wilderness Namibia, a programme focused on community engagement and educational impact. The initiative promotes sustainable conservation through the leadership development and education of children in Africa. This goal is achieved through activities like eco-club programmes at local schools and annual camps for children in rural communities on the outskirts of Africa’s wild areas.
  • Wilderness’s impact in Namibia spans a cumulative area of around 167,310 hectares. Operating under the Namibia Large Fauna Programme, they engage in continuous conservation efforts for desert-adapted wildlife species. These initiatives encompass large predators such as lions, leopards, brown and spotted hyenas, as well as desert-adapted elephants, black rhinos, giraffes and other ungulates.

Enjoy exploring one of the remotest places on Earth. Fill your days with nature drives, guided walks and even visits to the local villages of this extraordinary nomadic Himba people.

Lodges in Kaokoland

flying safari namibia

A particularly remote corner of one of the wildest countries in Africa, Kaokoland is a mix of mountains, sand dunes and desert, home unique wildlife, a scattering of nomadic Himba settlements and the Hoanib Valley Camp. A joint venture between local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, this intimate luxury is a excellent spot from which to explore the great wilderness that surrounds it.

There are six elegant tents that blend into the rugged environment, with design elements inspired by the landscape and furniture created by local Rundu carpenters and Himba carvers. Intended to leave virtually no footprint on this fragile eco-system, tents sit on decks made of wood and are entirely solar powered.

Days here are spent tracking endangered rhino, desert-adapted elephant, giraffe and, with luck, roving prides desert lion. It’s a great spot for birders and you can also explore on nature walks, visit the Giraffe Conservation Foundation field-base and meet the people that call the desert home.

flying safari namibia

One of the most striking things about the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge are the views you get from every angle that you sit, stand or lie. Even from your bathtub you get scenes of the Hoarusib River below, the jagged outlines of the Purros Valley mountains in the distance sometimes accompanied by the remote roar of desert lion.

Ethnically-styled, its terracotta buildings blend in well with the valley’s copper backdrop and the refreshing turquoise infinity pool is the only obvious sign of civilisation in a large radius. The feeling of being completely in the wild is tangible to say the least. Each of the rooms fall into line with the earthy décor of the entire lodge, with very comfortable beds, an en suite bathroom with a bath tub and indoor and outdoor showers.

Based in then Purros Conservancy you are in for a truly unique safari experience that only Namibia can offer in the form of desert Elephants, giraffe, lion and black rhino. Spend your days on game drives or perhaps take a flying safari over the Skeleton Coast.

Dine all the atmospheric delight that a lodge as remote this can deliver, whilst feasting on Italian-Namibian cuisine and under the light of the stars.

flying safari namibia

Days here will consist of morning and afternoon game drives to track the rare desert adapted elephants, black rhino and lions as well various antelopes, giraffes, ostriches, hartman zebras among other animals. You will also be able to go on guided walks and visit the local Himba village.

The villa has three spacious en-suite bedrooms, a sala, various decks, a central lounge, study, living room, dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. Roll up the canvased walls to reveal stunning views across the expansive desert. Delightful food and provisions are supplied or guests can opt for a private chef.

Antique furniture, old leather-bound books and lounging sofas create a welcoming and contemporary oasis in this wild landscape. Designed for those who seek solitude and peace, you can relax in silence and take in the ever-changing colours of the desert.

There is no swimming pool at the camp but a driver can be arranged to drive 20 to 30 minutes to use the one at Dunes Lodge. There are a number of guided activities (only for guests at this camp) to choose from to make the most of this spectacular region.

flying safari namibia

Perched on a dune plateau for phenomenal panoramas, Dune Lodge is the largest camp at Wolwedans with nine private chalets but is also the best appointed with a well-equipped main complex and swimming pool.

This is a better option for those that like the company of a few other guests amongst such a secluded expanse as the NamibRand reserve. With panoramic views over the plateau, the building’s large canvas blinds offer a unique connection to the wild surroundings, all while staying in unparalleled luxury.

Each of the spacious rooms comes with en-suite bathroom, a private verandah and canvas blinds which form the wall panels and can be rolled up for what feels like a night under the stars.

Sandy pathways lead to the central hub of the camp where you can sample wine from the cellar, unwind in one of two exquisite lounges, recline on the sundowner decks or relax in the library.

flying safari namibia

The newest and most exclusive addition to Wolwedans, Boulders Camp only has four tents surrounded by enormous granite rocks after which it was named.

The camp is positioned forty five kilometres south of the main Wolwedans camp allowing for a deeper exploration of the NamibRand’s south with scenic drives and walks. Staying here you certainly feel as if civilisation seems a million miles away, yet the traditional comfort and luxury of the tents pleasantly contradicts this.

There is a main tent with a dining area, breakfast deck, lounge and open fireplace to enjoy, eat and swap stories.
