How many Oscars does Tom Cruise have and how many times has he been nominated for the Oscars?
Tom Cruise has been a constant Hollywood presence since he arrived in the world of cinema. He’s evolved, developed as an artist, and has become one of THE legendary actors despite the fact despite a number of nominations, winning an Oscar has turned out to be an impossible mission.

As a young man, Cruise stumbled around the United States in search of opportunities, starting in New York , where he signed up for different castings while working as a waiter , until he gave up. It was at the age of 19 that he changed the city that never sleeps for Los Angeles , landing in a Hollywood that was waiting for him with open arms.
The beginnings of Tom Cruise’s career
Cruise thus began his career on the big screen with a brief role in ‘Endless Love’ (1981), to later share a shooting set with another promising filmmaker Sean Penn, in ‘Taps’ (1981). However, his youth saw him participate in a number of adolescent comedies such as ‘Losin’ It’ (1983) and ‘Risky Business’ (1983).
But it wasn’t until 1988 that the actor truly began to shine, with ‘Rain Man’ , a film that won four Oscars, but with going to Cruise. The first film for which he received a nomination was ‘Born on the 4th of July’ (1989), and although he fell just short of his first Oscar, he did receive his first Golden Globe .
Lots of movies and no Oscars for Cruise
From then on, his career went skyrocketing, thanks to his participation in movies such as ‘Mission Impossible’; ‘Jerry Maguire’ , where he was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars; ‘Magnolia’ , which also earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination; and ‘Top Gun’. A career that has also had its ups and downs, punctuated on various occasions by his interests in his personal life, where he devoted himself almost entirely to Scientology , which also affected his marriage to actress Katie Holmes .
A long, stellar career, but one little recognised in terms of awards. He has never won the coveted statuette . The actor is also a producer on what has been one of the big surprises of 2023, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ , which broke various box office records that year.

Arriving 36 years after the Tony Scott-directed original, the film was delayed by the tragic suicide of that filmmaker, and then sat on the shelf in the pandemic. Cruise, along with fellow producers Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison and Christopher McQuarrie, stood tall when many other languishing films were moved to streaming bows by studios which did not want to wait for moviegoers to feel safe enough to return to theaters. Cruise has said that no way was he going to watch that happen to a film that was directed by Joseph Kosinski to be seen in theaters. Not when he’d put in so much time implementing lessons learned from the first film, when he was the only castmember who didn’t vomit during scenes shot in the jet fighter planes. Cruise set up a boot camp for the Top Gun: Maverick ensemble, to get them better acclimated for the dialogue scenes that were shot in unprecedented fashion in the aircrafts.
Oscar Nominations 2023: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
The film became the top grossing film of Cruise’s career, despite no revenue from China or Russia.
Cruise has been thrice-nominated for Oscar performances — Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire & Magnolia — and he was part of the Best Picture-winning Rain Man . Top Gun: Maverick might seem a dark horse, but the sequel is at a robust 96% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a solid storyline that featured a touching end for Val Kilmer’s Iceman nemesis from the original film, and Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards), Maverick’s flying partner in the original film.

It marks the first Oscar nomination for Jerry Bruckheimer, who has a shelf full of Emmys for The Amazing Race , but hasn’t taken home movie gold despite his long list of blockbusters. This one has a real shot to win, because of all of the variables in raising the movie business out of its pandemic crisis moment.

At the Oscar Nominees Luncheon, a Crowd in Cruise Control
The “Top Gun: Maverick” star and producer is mobbed as Austin Butler, Angela Bassett, Ke Huy Quan and others angle to chat with him.

By Kyle Buchanan
For the privileged few embarking on an Oscar campaign, the path to a nomination asks you to hobnob with so many of the same people that over the course of many months, your competitors can begin to feel like classmates.
But on Monday afternoon, at a luncheon held in Beverly Hills for this year’s Oscar nominees, the arrival of a new student caused quite a stir.
That would be Tom Cruise, nominated this year as a producer of the megahit best-picture contender “ Top Gun: Maverick .” He was among the first notable names to walk into the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. The 60-year-old star had sat out both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards this season, so many of his fellow nominees were encountering him for the first time. Before long, the ballroom had turned into a massive meet-and-greet.
“I love you, I love you, oh my God!” said the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Ke Huy Quan , who hopped in place, exclaiming, “I want a picture with this man!” before seizing a selfie with Cruise. Director Guillermo del Toro went over for an embrace, as did the nominated actors Brendan Fraser, Angela Bassett and Michelle Williams . Cruise even posed for pictures with Steven Spielberg , a once-frequent collaborator whom the star has not been publicly photographed with in over a decade.
The nominees luncheon is supposed to be an egalitarian affair where big stars and behind-the-scenes technicians are on equal footing, but there was no mistaking Cruise as the ballroom’s top dog: He had the gravitational pull of the sun and its burnt-orange countenance, too. Any of the nominees who might have pulled focus from Cruise had declined to attend: Original-song contenders Lady Gaga and Rihanna were busy with other obligations (including, for the latter, a just-concluded Super Bowl stint ), and even surprise best-actress nominee Andrea Riseborough was missing in action.
Still, simply making it to Cruise took some time: In the schmoozy hour before lunch was served, he was so mobbed by his fellow nominees that he was hardly able to move more than a few feet. I watched for a while as “Elvis” star Austin Butler drifted with slow, inexorable determination toward Cruise, who finally pulled the younger man toward him by clamping a hand on his shoulder like a stapler. For several minutes, they were locked in such a tight bro-embrace that it was impossible to discern what they were talking about (or, more important, whether Butler was still speaking in his “Elvis” drawl ).
So instead, I made my way to “Top Gun: Maverick” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who observed the scene serenely just a few feet away. “It’s my first time at the luncheon,” said the newly nominated producer, who’s better known for making explosive action movies than Oscar fare. “After 50 years in the business, I finally get here.”
It was not the first time at the luncheon for songwriter Diane Warren, who has been nominated for an Oscar 13 times before and is back in contention this year for the song “Applause,” from the film “Tell It Like a Woman.”
“It’s my favorite day,” Warren said. “No one’s a loser yet, everybody’s a winner.” I noted that Warren had received an honorary Oscar in November, and asked whether it had dimmed her desire to win a competitive statuette. “No, I still want to win,” she said, grinning. “He wants a friend!”
As the nominees and their guests took their seats to nosh on mushroom risotto, the academy president, Janet Yang, came to the stage and addressed the fallout from the organization’s handling of the Will Smith slap at last year’s ceremony.
“It was inadequate,” Yang said. “We learned from this that the academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis, we must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively.”
One unrelated tweak has already been made: Unlike last year, when eight below-the-line Oscars were presented just before the telecast began, Yang promised that each category would be aired live during the March 12 telecast. Because of that, Yang pleaded with the nominees to keep their speeches short: “We need to be sensitive to our running time,” she said. “This is live television, after all.”
With that settled, the nominees were called one by one to the front of the stage, where they would pose together for one massive “class photo.” The first name announced was Jamie Lee Curtis , who had earned her first Oscar nomination this year for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
“I’ve been acting since I was 19 and I’m 64 — do the math,” Curtis told me. “That’s many years of watching this photograph being taken.” Her late parents, the actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, had both been Oscar nominees. “To be connected through this legacy of their work and my work and now being included here, it’s very powerful,” she said.
Eventually, with all the nominees assembled, the producer and academy governor DeVon Franklin counted down to a flashbulb — pop! — then counted down again as the academy photographer took another picture. “All right, three more,” Franklin said.
“I’ve got one more expression,” shouted best-actor nominee Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).
Moments earlier, Farrell had been in an animated conversation with Warren, who was standing on the riser behind him. When the pictures were finished and the attendees started to make their way out of the ballroom, I asked Warren what they had discussed.
“We talked about how we both did very badly at school,” she said, “and now here we are, at the coolest graduation picture ever.”

Tom Cruise Really Could Finally Win an Oscar for Top Gun: Maverick
By Katey Rich
Let’s start here: It’s entirely likely that Top Gun: Maverick will win multiple Oscars. With her ubiquitous power ballad and an Oscar already in hand, Lady Gaga is perfectly poised to steamroll the best-original-song category with “Hold My Hand.” And though there are blockbusters yet to come, including Black Panther 2 and Avatar 2, the best-sound category basically exists for the zooms and crashes of Top Gun ’s aerial spectaculars.
There’s one more honor that’s a little bit more out of reach, but irresistible to imagine for fans of both the movie and one of the oldest Oscar narratives: the overdue reward. Tom Cruise has already been celebrated as the sole savior of moviegoing, thanks to Maverick ’s incredible returns. But what if he also got a best-actor statue for his effort?
The idea was floated back when Maverick first opened, and at the time, it seemed a little fanciful. But as Maverick has continued its box office dominance, to a degree that seemed impossible for any movie about non-superpowered human beings, Cruise and his Herculean efforts to entertain the world remain difficult to ignore. Would an Oscar really be so outlandish at this point?
Hear more about this not-so-wild idea on this week’s Little Gold Men podcast.
Yes, this is a narrative that, with a few details changed, seems to resurface every year. There was the quixotic campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home to get a best-picture nomination, largely on the strength of its own box office success. There are the summer hits that hold out hope of being remembered when the Oscars roll around six months later, from tiny triumphs like The Farewell to the notorious case of The Dark Knight . There’s the whole mess of the #OscarsCheerMoment for the Snyder Cut , which we just cannot get into right now. But pretty much as long as there have been Oscars, there have been pushes from various corners to reward populist hits, with the somewhat persuasive argument that millions of fans can’t be all wrong.
And every once in a while, it works. Following its splashy premiere at Cannes in May, Top Gun: Maverick was compared fairly favorably to Mad Max: Fury Road, which began its own unlikely road to Oscar dominance at the same festival. Black Panther won three Oscars. Get Out, a horror movie released a full year before the ceremony, was nominated for four Oscars and won best original screenplay. When critics, audiences, and Oscar voters line up so completely, it can be genuinely thrilling—a throwback to the days when Tootsie and E.T. were the highest-grossing films of 1982 by the time they lost best picture to Gandhi.
But the Mad Max: Fury Road comparisons only went so far, even at Cannes. Top Gun: Maverick is an achievement on many levels, but not quite the same as George Miller ’s wild directorial vision, or even Fury Road ’s metaphorical resonance. ( Maverick goes out of its way to avoid any connection to real global politics, which, fair enough.) And even though Maverick is far and away the biggest box office hit of the year, cultural dominance now doesn’t mean quite the same thing that it did for E.T. The urgency to celebrate a hit, even one this big, is not likely to mean as much to the globally spread, future-minded Academy voters of the moment.
But that brings us back to Tom Cruise, the man without whom Maverick would not exist for many reasons. Nominated for three career Oscars—two for definitive leading-man roles in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, one for transformative supporting work in Magnolia —he’s been on quite a journey since his last nomination in 2000. On the brink of irrelevance by the time Jeremy Renner was tapped as his fresh, young colead in 2011’s Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, Cruise instead wrested that franchise back into his control, building up box office clout so strong that even a long-gestating, seemingly implausible Top Gun sequel suddenly became real. His non– Mission: Impossible work—two Jack Reacher movies that barely exist, an attempt to reboot The Mummy, whatever American Made turned out to be—has been almost uniformly irrelevant, but every Ethan Hunt movie has reset the clock. Watch Tom Cruise in his element, and it is impossible not to be in awe. There is still truly no other movie star like him.
By Maureen Ryan
By Matthew Jacobs
By Chris Murphy
And though the physical challenges of the Mission: Impossible franchise are not the stuff Oscar nominations are made of, there’s more going on in Maverick. Cruise gets to play the lingering anguish over Goose’s death that informs Maverick’s relationship with Goose’s son ( Miles Teller ); his continuing struggle to follow orders, barely containing a smirk in the face of Jon Hamm ’s imposing admiral; even a surprisingly robust romantic subplot with Jennifer Connelly, whose chemistry with Cruise feels genuinely well-earned. The spectacle of Maverick ’s flying sequences may be the big selling point, but it’s not hard to imagine audiences returning again and again to see the bracingly emotional reunion between Cruise and Val Kilmer ’s Iceman, an almost 40-year-old, famously homoerotic tension transformed into a deep—and sad—understanding.
Maverick is not Cruise’s best performance, sure. But as a distillation of everything that has made Cruise a generation-defining star, Maverick is pretty much perfect. If the Academy wants to finally award Cruise a statue, it’s not likely there will be a better opportunity to do so.
The question, of course, is how much the Academy really wants that—and how hard Cruise is willing to work for it. Long protected by his tower of mega-fame and Scientology, Cruise would need to embark on some kind of authenticity tour for an awards campaign, different from the exhaustive work he already did to promote Maverick. It’s one thing for Cruise to fly onto an aircraft carrier or hold court in front of a crowd in Cannes, and another entirely to open up for the kind of profiles or roundtable conversations that are ever-present in modern Oscar campaigns. There’s a very, very recent precedent for this: Will Smith was more visible, and vulnerable, than he has been in years in his promotional duties for King Richard, and his carefully calibrated campaign worked beautifully (until, of course, it didn’t). The path megastars must walk in the Oscar circuit is different from the path for fresh-faced newcomers or even previous winners, but Cruise could make it all look as natural as clinging to the side of an airplane.
Many, many factors—including the slew of films that will premiere at the early fall festivals in Toronto, Telluride, and Venice—will determine Cruise’s Oscar chances, far more than the quality of his work; that, unfortunately, is always the way. And it’s possible that there’s a much easier path for him, parlaying the success of Maverick —and maybe some outrage over an Oscar snub—into a win for a juicy, more Oscar-friendly supporting role in the next year or two.
But in this period before we really know what’s on the horizon, it’s worth just floating the idea of Cruise as a serious contender. As The Hollywood Reporter ’s Scott Feinberg pointed out back in June , if Paul Newman could win for The Color of Money and John Wayne for True Grit, why not this? The reward for making a giant blockbuster is the money and the cultural impact, but every once in a while, the stars align to merit something more.

Inside the 2023 Oscar nominees luncheon: Stars mix and mingle

Paul Mescal chatted with Jenny Slate. Cate Blanchett tucked into her salad beside Tony Kushner. Tom Cruise gave Steven Spielberg a bear hug and congratulated the filmmaker, with whom he worked on “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds,” on his latest film, “The Fabelmans” —“Beautiful stuff,” Cruise said, beaming. “Beautiful stuff.”
In all, more than 180 of this year’s Oscar contenders gathered on Monday afternoon at the annual nominees luncheon to celebrate their achievements — and pose together for Hollywood’s most illustrious class photo.
With the Academy Awards on March 12 only one month away, the gathering at the Beverly Hilton — the only Oscar-season stop at which a majority of the nominees are actually in the same room prior to the awards themselves — offered the chance to mix and mingle for those who might otherwise never cross paths.
While the atmosphere at the luncheon, an academy tradition dating back to the early 1980s, was convivial and joyful, only 20% or so of the attendees will actually emerge victorious when Oscar season reaches its climax.
Film composer Carter Burwell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), a nominee for the third time, wryly acknowledged the background hum of competition. “We should have a tug-of-war between the ‘Banshees’ crew and the ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ folks,” Burwell joked. “With Brendan Gleeson, I think we could take them.”
Taking the stage to welcome the nominees, Academy President Janet Yang attempted to address any lingering misgivings about last year’s Oscars telecast, which was upended when Will Smith struck Chris Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“What happened onstage was wholly unacceptable, and the response from our organization was inadequate,” Yang said. “We learned from this that the academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions. And particularly in times of crisis, we must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward.”
Turning to the upcoming ceremony, Yang drew applause from the crowd when she noted that, after last year’s controversial decision to shift eight below-the-line and short-film categories out of the live telecast, all awards will once again be handed out on air.
That said, with the Oscar producers facing continued pressure to trim down the often bloated show, Yang said the nominees bear their own responsibility to help keep things moving at a lively pace. “If you win a coveted gold statue, your acceptance speech must be 45 seconds, tops,” Yang said, asking the attendees to repeat the number to hammer home the point.
Though the luncheon was celebratory, for the nominees it’s just one in what can seem like an endless series of receptions, screenings, cocktail parties, Q&As and industry schmooze-fests as Oscar season grinds on.
“I need some hand sanitizer,” songwriter Diane Warren, celebrating her 14th Oscar nod this year for the song “Applause” from the film “Tell It Like a Woman,” said with a slight note of weariness. “I have shaken so many hands.”

Why Tom Cruise Wasn't At the Oscars
The Top Gun: Maverick star didn't turn up for the big awards night, despite the film's multiple nominations.
The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun , Top Gun: Maverick , became a must-watch film in 2022. But while the blockbuster garnered five Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture, along with Best Adapted Screenplay, sound and film editing, visual effects and Best Original Song, one major player was missing from the festivities tonight: the franchise's star, Tom Cruise.
Despite starring in both the original film, as well as the long-anticipated sequel, Cruise did not make an appearance on the red carpet at the 2023 Oscars tonight. Though the film became an awards show darling, Cruise himself did not receive any Academy Award nominations for his performance. Nonetheless, it was expected by many that the star would turn up for any potential wins for the film.
On Sunday, however, a representative for Cruise told People that Cruise would not be in attendance on the big night due to scheduling obligations for Cruise's currently in the works sequel known as Mission Impossible 8 . Inside the 2023 Oscar Nominees Luncheon: Tom Cruise Has 'Fun,' Academy Addresses Slap and More
There were several group hugs and movie reunions at the annual Oscar nominees luncheon held on Monday
Mia McNiece joined PEOPLE in 2010 and is currently the Senior Movies Editor.
The 95th Academy Awards are approaching, and this year's nominees gathered to celebrate.
On Monday, stars like Tom Cruise , Brendan Fraser , Hong Chau , Angela Bassett , Austin Butler , Michelle Williams , Steven Spielberg and more nominees showed up to the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., for the 95th annual Oscars nominees luncheon.
Actors Michelle Yeoh and Paul Mescal greeted each other during the event, hugging and congratulating each other on their nominations for lead performances in Everything Everywhere all at Once and Aftersun , respectively.
Elvis star Butler, 31, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress Bassett, 64, and Cruise, 60, were spotted greeting each other, congratulating each other on their recognition while in a group hug.
Cruise, who is nominated as a producer behind the Top Gun: Maverick sequel up for Best Picture, also reunited with Spielberg, 76, at the gathering. (He and the director made 2002's Minority Report and 2005's War of the Worlds together.)
The menu for the star-studded event included a two-course meal with dessert, featuring a harvest salad and king oyster mushroom scallops, wild mushroom risotto, roasted Brussels sprouts, baby carrots and pea tendrils. For dessert, guests were served an opera cake, ganache and fresh berries.
"This is fun," Cruise told PEOPLE at one point during the luncheon Monday. "I'm enjoying it."

During the event, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang addressed Will Smith 's infamous slap of Chris Rock during last year's Oscars, telling the room of nominees that the Academy's initial response to the incident was "inadequate." (Smith, who has apologized, resigned from the Academy, which banned him from attending its events for 10 years.)
"We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis we must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry," Yang said in a speech. "You should and can expect no less from us going forward."
Yang added that the Academy's efforts to "maintaining the highest of standards while creating the changes we wish to see" in the film industry include inspiring young people who want to work in film.
"This is how we create the global film community of the future, one that's open to ideas and cultures from all corners," Yang said at the luncheon. "I urge us all to focus our efforts on nurturing the extraordinary, brilliant community that we inhabit."
When it came time for the group photo with all the nominees present for the luncheon, Jamie Lee Curtis was first called up, receiving a big round of applause.
Prior to that, Yang informed this year's nominees, "One rule we asks of those privileged to take the stage on Oscar night: the 45-second rule. Your acceptance speech must be 45 seconds tops. We've worked really hard to keep all the awards live this year, so we need to keep the speeches short."
The 95th Oscars will be held Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The awards show will be televised live on ABC, with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel returning to host for the third time.

They saved cinema – so why weren’t Tom Cruise and James Cameron at the Oscars?
Jimmy Kimmel joked: ‘The two guys who insisted we go to the theater didn’t come the theater.’ So where were Cruise and Cameron?
They were the two men credited with saving cinema, getting bums back on seats in cinemas around the world after months and months of Covid-19 lockdowns. And yet neither James Cameron or Tom Cruise showed up to the 2023 Oscars .
Cruise’s film Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1986 hit, grossed $1.4bn at the global box office. Its huge success was widely considered a sign that the industry had recovered after months of uncertainty, showing Covid-wary audiences were willing to return for the right film.
Cruise is the star of Top Gun: Maverick, but also a producer, which meant he was nominated in the best picture category, alongside Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer.
Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning
On Sunday, a representative for Cruise confirmed the actor is filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part II, the action franchise’s upcoming eighth instalment, in Europe. Bruckheimer was prepared to accept the Oscar if the film had won best picture, which instead went to Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Top Gun: Maverick only won one of the six awards it was up for: best sound. It was the dark horse nominee for best picture, but has been widely credited with luring back audiences who wanted to see the big-budget action flick on a cinema screen.
Last month, director Steven Spielberg was filmed telling Cruise at the 2023 Academy Luncheon: “You saved Hollywood’s ass, and you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously, Maverick might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”
Cameron, meanwhile, was nominated as a producer of best picture nominee Avatar: The Way of Water, which is now the No. 3 highest-grossing movie of all time, having taken $2.29bn at the global box office . Avatar: The Way of Water was nominated for four Oscars including best picture, but only won one, for best visual effects.
Cameron’s producing partner and fellow nominee Jon Landau told The New York Times that his absence was due to “personal reasons”. Cameron had attended two Oscars functions in the days before the ceremony.
This year’s Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel joked about their absences, saying: “You know, Tom [Cruise] and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight. The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre didn’t come the theatre.”
“Everyone loved Top Gun, everyone! I mean, Tom Cruise with his shirt off and that beach football scene? L Ron hubba hubba,” Kimmel joked, referring to Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard.
He also addressed the possibility that Cameron had not attended due to not being nominated for best director, saying: “Some of the cynics are saying James Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a best director nomination. And while I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility, he does have a point. I mean, how does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed Avatar? What do they think he is, a woman?”
“You know a show is too long when even James Cameron can’t sit through it,” he added, in reference to Avatar: The Way of Water’s 192-minute running time.
Cruise will next be on screens in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part I in July, while the next Avatar film will be released in December 2024.

Tom Cruise and James Cameron, two champions of the theatrical experience behind the biggest movies of 2022 skipped the 2023 Oscars.
“The two guys who insisted you go to the theater, didn’t go to the theater,” host Jimmy Kimmel quipped during his monologue.

Cameron, meanwhile, is nominated as a producer of Avatar: The Way of Water , the No. 3 highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.93 billion globally. He did not receive a best director nod for his work on the sequel. His producing partner and fellow nominee Jon Landau told The New York Times on the carpet that the absence was due to “personal reasons.”
Maverick is considered a dark horse candidate for best picture, but the feature was widely credited with helping get audiences back to theaters, with Steven Spielberg telling Cruise at the 2023 Academy Luncheon that he saved theaters .
Though Cruise was treated as royalty at that event as well as at the PGA Awards , he was mocked at the Golden Globes and the DGA Awards .
“I like to see people do well. I know that things don’t just happen. I know it’s not just luck. You have to create that luck. You have to will it into existence. I want you to know that I’m always rooting for you. I’m rooting for all of you,” Cruise said while accepting the David O. Selznick Achievement Award during the 2023 PGA Awards .
Top Gun: Maverick is nominated for six Oscars, including best song for Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand.” Cruise will return to theaters with Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One , which arrives in theaters July 14.
Avatar: The Way of Water earned four nominations. A sequel is due out Dec. 20, 2024.

TOM CRUISE has received many awards and nominations for his extensive career acting career.
Cruise began acting in 1981 when he made his film debut in Endless Love. Since then, he has appeared in over 58 films.
Cruise has been nominated for three Academy Awards throughout his career.
He was nominated for Best Actor in 1997 for Jerry Maguire and in 1990 for Born On The Fourth Of July.
He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Magnolia in 2000.
Tom Cruise has not won any of the Academy Awards that he has been nominated for.
What awards has Tom Cruise won?
Although Cruise has not won an Oscar, he has received many other accolades for his performances in the past.
While Cruise did not win an Oscar for Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, or Born On The Fourth Of July, he did win Golden Globes for all three of his performances.
He has also won two MTV Movie Awards, a Satellite Award, a People's Choice Award, and many more.
In May 2021, Cruise announced that he will be returning his three Golden Globes to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Why is Tom Cruise returning his Golden Globes?
A source close to CNN revealed that Cruise was returning his three Golden Globe awards back to the HFPA.
This comes following criticism of the HFPA regarding lack of diversity in its 87 members.
A recent investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Times revealed that the HFPA included no Black members.
The investigation also raised ethical questions about the financial benefits to some of the members.

Tom Cruise Doesn't Really Do Sequels Very Often, But There's Apparently One Movie His Co-Star Was Shocked Didn't Get A Follow-up
"He did bite me at the end..."
Unless we are talking about Mission: Impossible – M:I 8 is currently filming or the long-delayed Top Gun : Maverick – Tom Cruise isn’t known for making very many sequels to his flicks. But, according to one former cast member, there is one film in his oeuvre that he is shocked never got a follow-up. The former cast member in question is Christian Slater , who co-starred along with Cruise and Brad Pitt in one of the best films of the 90s , the film adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel Interview With The Vampire . According to the Heathers alum, he’s shocked that he and the Risky Business star never got a second bite at the neck, playing a vampire in a sequel.
Christian Slater Reflects on The Missed Sequel Opportunity
It's hard to believe it's been nearly three decades–the movie turns 30 this year–since we were first mesmerized by one of the most iconic vampire performances on screen. In an interview shared on Comicbook.com’s Chris Killian’s Instagram , Christian Slater discussed how he and Cruise were reflecting on the project. The pair expressed a mutual astonishment over the movie's lack of a sequel despite their roles becoming fan favorites. He recounted:
Tom Cruise and I were both surprised that Interview With The Vampire didn’t get a sequel. You know, that would have been fun. Uh, I mean, he did bite me at the end of that thing.
For my money, even three decades since its release, Interview With The Vampire is still one of the best vampire movies ever committed to celluloid. Upon release, it was a critical and financial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror films of 1994, and grew to become a goth cult favorite. Not to mention, it introduced the broader world to actress Kirsten Dunst , a role Cruise helped the young actress secure thanks to some very practical advice.
The Enduring Legacy of 'Interview With the Vampire'
Tom Cruise's electrifying turn as the vampire Lestat was central to the film’s success. Initially, Anne Rice, the source material's author, hated Cruise’s casting in the role. However, his performance won her over and helped cement the film's place in cinematic history. Despite this success and the buzz around it, plans to continue Lestat's story with Cruise in a sequel never came to fruition. While the potential for a direct follow-up to this beloved film sparked plenty of discussions, ultimately, those plans remained just out of reach, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.
There was anticipation over a sequel starring the Top Gun A-lister, yet various factors, including rights issues, changes in production companies, and creative decisions, led to a different path for the book to screen adaptations of Rice's novels.
The next film in the series, Queen of the Damned, starring the late singer and actress Aaliyah , was released in 2002, but it did not involve Tom Cruise. Instead, Stuart Townsend took over the role of Lestat. The film combined elements from the second and third books of Rice's series, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned . Still, it diverged significantly from the source material and did not continue directly from where Interview left off.
Interview With The Vampire is enjoying a second adaptation and return to screens as a television series, which is gearing up for its second season on AMC .

The Possibility Of A Sequel With Cruise
The ending of Interview with the Vampire set the stage perfectly for a sequel. It left audiences reeling from its final twist and introduced a new narrative thread with Daniel, the San Francisco reporter who becomes enthralled with Louis's tale of the undead. As Christian Slater hinted in the recent interview, the setup was ideal for a follow-up. Yet, despite the ripe storytelling potential, a direct continuation wasn't in the cards. Could a sequel with Cruise still happen? As the interviewers and Slater point out, Tom Cruise barely looks like he's aged since the last time he put on the Vampire Lestat's fangs. So, never say never.
Christian Slater's most recent work, another book adaptation, the series The Spiderwick Chronicles , is available now for free on The Roku Channel . Be sure to check out our 2024 movie schedule to see what upcoming horror movies are heading to a screen near you.

Amid the glitz and glamour of Victoria Beckham 's extravagant 50th birthday bash, Tom Cruise showcased a moment of chivalry as he helped a photographer who had stumbled outside the venue.
The Top Gun actor, exuding his trademark suave demeanor in a sharp black suit and shades, diverted from entering the festivities to assist the paparazzo, who had taken a tumble. With effortless grace, the 61-year-old extended a helping hand, swiftly grasping the photographer's arm and aiding him back to his feet.
Victoria's milestone celebration unfolded in grandeur at Oswald's in Mayfair, London, where she spared no expense in orchestrating an unforgettable evening. Accompanied by her husband, David, and their brood of Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, the fashion icon radiated jubilance as she marked the occasion in style.
Among the star-studded guests were Victoria's fellow Spice Girls -- Melanie Chisholm , Geri Halliwell , Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown -- all arriving to revel in the festivities. Cruise himself, alongside Victoria's close confidante Eva Longoria, crooner Marc Anthony, and a plethora of other renowned personalities, converged on the exclusive members' bar.
An eyewitness tells ET, "Tom was in amazing spirits while celebrating Victoria’s birthday. He had great energy and was dancing throughout the entire night. He had so much fun."
On Saturday, David, 48, treated his Instagram followers to a special performance from Victoria's 50th birthday celebration: a Spice Girls reunion.
"I mean come on x @victoriabeckham @melaniecmusic @officialmelb @emmaleebunton @gerihalliwellhorner 💚💛🧡💜💙," David captioned the post.
In the video, the camera pans to Victoria (Posh Spice), Geri (Ginger Spice), Emma (Baby Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice) and Mel C (Sporty Spice) all in a line doing their iconic dance moves while singing their hit, "Stop."
While the Spice Girls are in action during the moment, David sings along with the rest of the room.
Victoria celebrated the moment on her respective Instagram.
"Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife," the fashion designer captioned the video.
Mel B also shared the video on her Instagram alongside a cheeky caption.
"About last night #tourdatescomingsoon," she wrote on the video.
Meanwhile, Emma posed with Mel C prior to the party.
"Off to celebrate our special girl @victoriabeckham #spicegirls #holdontoyournickersgirls," she captioned the post featuring her and Mel C posing in their gowns.
The Spice Girls reunion comes one month after the group marked the 30th anniversary of their auditions. The last time the women officially reunited was for their tour in 2013, though Victoria notably skipped out on it.
"Today marks the 30th anniversary of the very first Spice Girls auditions!" they wrote last month. "What started back in 1994 has turned into an amazing journey, way beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our fans for your support from day one #FriendshipNeverEnds ."
In the video montage, set to their 1996 hit, "Wannabe," the women are shown dancing and goofing around with each other while wearing casual '90s outfits.
In January, Mel B opened up about the bond the women share after three decades of friendship.
"I was a Spice Girl at the age of 17. I'm old," she told Jennifer Hudson at the time. "I'm feeling old right now. But it is amazing that we've managed to kind of still stay friends. It's been 30 years. What you go through as a group... you are just welded together for life because you've been through such a crazy experience."

David & Victoria Beckham were so ‘starstruck’ they kept a Tom Cruise photo display: sources

David and Victoria Beckham have always been “charmed” by Tom Cruise — and even displayed photos of themselves with the “Top Gun” star at home, according to sources.
So Cruise was, naturally, a VIP guest at Victoria’s 50th birthday celebrations Saturday, where he wowed the crowd with his dance-floor moves .
The “Mission: Impossible” star joined guests including the Spice Girls , Gordon Ramsay, Eva Longoria and Salma Hayek Saturday night at London’s exclusive Oswald’s private members club.
The “Mission: Impossible” actor showed off his breakdancing skills and even did the splits for the “absolutely dumbfounded” crowd, according to the Daily Mail.
But his close friendship with the Beckhams goes back decades.
An industry source told Page Six, “The Beckhams were super close with Tom [for years] — they went to loads of parties at his house in LA.
“He is very, very charming. They were starstruck by him.”
The couple actually met Cruise years before their move to Los Angeles in 2007, and another source who knows the couple said they were big fans.
According to Jenny Frankfurt , former manager to Victoria’s Spice Girls bandmate Geri Halliwell, the Beckhams had an array of photos of themselves with the star at their country home, dubbed Beckingham Palace.
Frankfurt wrote that, upon arriving at the estate in Hertfordshire, “There was a huge Christmas tree in the hall and several tables of photographs, one devoted completely to about 30 pictures of Victoria and David with Tom Cruise.”
Some industry sources said that devout Scientologist Cruise tried to talk to the couple about his church and they politely told him they were uninterested.
In his 2022 book, “ A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology ,” former high-ranking Scientology officer Mike Rinder claimed the church went to great expense trying to woo the Beckhams through Cruise.
“A professional-grade soccer pitch was constructed on the property at Gold [Base, church headquarters in San Jacinto, Calif.]. The ground was leveled, irrigation installed, perfect turf, goals raised,” Rinder wrote. “A full-time caretaker was appointed from the Gold staff … It was built for one purpose only: so Tom Cruise could woo his friend David to come to Gold. It never happened.”
A source who knows the couple denied they ever discussed Scientology with Cruise.
Victoria famously attended Cruise’s star-studded wedding to Katie Holmes — mother of his estranged daughter Suri Cruise — in Italy in 2006..
Cruise is a soccer fan and has been seen at many of David’s games.
And David once revealed that he turned to the Oscar nominee for advice on whether to leave Real Madrid and join LA Galaxy in a series of late-night phone calls.
“Obviously, I’d asked him for his advice as well because he’s a very wise man; he’s a very good friend of mine,” Beckham said at the time.
Cruise threw the Beckhams a lavish “Welcome to LA” party when they moved to the US.
Speaking in his Netflix documentary, “BECKHAM”, David reminisced, “The funny thing was, I was friends with Tom Cruise. I remember Tom turning round and saying, ‘me and Will are gonna throw you a party’. I was like ‘Will?’ and he said ‘Will Smith’.”
The party was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, with Cruise clearing the dance floor to recreate the choreography from his 1983 film “Risky Business.”
Despite rumors over the past few years, “There was never any falling out between them, not at all,” said the source of Cruise and the Beckhams. “They have always remained close and in contact.”
Another source who knows the couple said the friendship quieted down when the Beckhams left LA and David went to play in France, but they have grown closer now that they are all living mostly in the UK.

Nicole Kidman posts throwback clip of first movie role, because nostalgia feels good in a place like this
The actress is set to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award, making her the first Aussie to get the honor.
Lester Fabian Brathwaite is a staff writer at Entertainment Weekly , where he covers breaking news, all things Real Housewives , and a rich cornucopia of popular culture. Formerly a senior editor at Out magazine, his work has appeared on NewNowNext , Queerty , Rolling Stone , and The New Yorker . He was also the first author signed to Phoebe Robinson's Tiny Reparations imprint. He met Oprah once.
Ahead of receiving the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award, Nicole Kidman is looking back to where it all began.
The Oscar-winning actress, who will be the first Australian ever to receive the AFI honor, shared a clip on Instagram Tuesday from her very first film, 1983's Bush Christmas .
"This 14 year old girl could have never predicted all the talented people she would get to work with and the many different characters she would get to play," Kidman wrote in the caption. "So excited to celebrate with so many friends and peers on Saturday with the @AmericanFilmInstitute."
Kidman had her breakthrough role six years after Bush Christmas in 1989's Dead Calm , followed by 1990's Days of Thunder with her future husband Tom Cruise , which led to international recognition. Following her divorce from Cruise in 2001, Kidman went on to become a bona fide movie star with back-to-back roles in Moulin Rouge , The Others , and The Hours , for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award.
Throughout her career, Kidman has earned five Oscar nominations, two Emmy Awards, and the eternal devotion of homosexuals the world over for her now-iconic AMC Theatres ad.
Or, as AFI put it , "Both a powerhouse performer, spellbinding movie star and accomplished producer, Nicole Kidman has captured the imaginations of audiences throughout her prolific career, delivering complex and versatile performances onscreen."

The 56-year-old actress will receive the AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The tribute will air on TNT and Turner Classic Movies at a later date.

In January, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy jetted to London to connect with the new crown jewel of the studio, Tom Cruise . The three met to identify a film that would kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership.” Sources say a raft of possibilities were discussed, including an “Edge of Tomorrow” follow-up and Quentin Tarantino ’s “The Movie Critic,” which currently isn’t set up with a distributor and has Warner Bros., like every major studio, salivating.

“The strategy at Warner Bros. right now and the reason they made some of these big star deals is they’re basically playing with other people’s money,” says one insider. “They’re shopping for Quentin or Cruise with the notion they can use it as a shiny object that is going to be additive when Zaslav sells the company.”
That time may be approaching. In April, Warner Bros. Discovery can entertain offers to buy, sell or merge with a studio like NBCUniversal, as many on the lot believe will happen. That’s when the two-year lock-up period expires as part of the 2022 deal that united WarnerMedia and Discovery. All of the recent moves, from a first-look pact with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap to the quest to land Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” follow-up are akin to painting a house before it hits the market.
And this is one splashy renovation. The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.
Some argue that spending big is essential when releasing movies in theaters.
“There’s only so much top talent in Hollywood, and it’s very competitive and stretched thin because a lot of talent have deals in streaming,” says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “If theatrical is going to work, you need the A-lister like Tom and Leo, and Warner Bros. is spending what they need to spend to keep this talent.”
But executives across town believe Warners’ math sometimes doesn’t add up, with the studio decried as fiscally irresponsible. The Anderson film, for instance, was greenlit with a $115 million budget, according to sources. Underscoring the gamble, none of the director’s movies has crossed $80 million at the box office. His latest, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” made $33 million worldwide. Even with Cruise’s star power, “Magnolia” only mustered $48.5 million. (It was De Luca, then a New Line exec, who convinced Cruise to play “Magnolia’s” misogynistic self-help guru.) The pair are said to be less pumped about another auteur’s latest: Bong Joon Ho ’s “Mickey 17.” In January, Warner Bros. pulled the $150 million Robert Pattinson sci-fi starrer from its schedule and then moved it to 2025. A Warner rep insists: “There is, of course, enthusiasm for it.”
As merger mania draws near, De Luca and Abdy seem unwilling to push back on talent asks. But apparently they did just that during the Coogler-Jordan negotiations. The director and star wanted 25% of first-dollar gross to split and two guaranteed theatrical release slots for future films. Both deal points were nixed.
Despite the pressure to acquiesce to demands from top talent, De Luca and Abdy can still say no.
