What's cool about this Top Gun costume idea is you can do either character and go to your Halloween party with a Maverick, or you can have a father son combo with Goose and Rooster. One can dress as Miles Teller (Rooster) and the other as Anthony Edwards (Goose).

Besides their masculine good looks, the jeans were also selected for comfort. Top Gun: Maverick costume designer Marlene Stewart worked with Vince to create a pair of jeans that were comfortable enough for Cruise to wear during long shoots and, most importantly, flexible enough to straddle his signature motorcycle (the hem also had to fit over Cruise’s motorcycle boots). The DM 01’s cotton-elastane blend fabric fit the bill, with just a bit of stretch for more comfort than 100% cotton denim jeans.

Pete Mitchell is a United States Navy F-14 pilot. After a mission to intercept some MiGs ends with Maverick helping Cougar land his plane on the carrier, Cougar surrenders his wings to the Navy and Maverick and Goose are sent to Top Gun in Miramar. The reason for Maverick's reckless flying is the death of his father.

Duke Mitchell when his plane was shot down in a dogfight during the Vietnam War. While at Top Gun, Maverick falls in love with flight instructor Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood and becomes a rival to another pilot, Iceman, who thinks Maverick is dangerous.

At the same time, Maverick's reckless flying simultaneously angers and impresses Jester, which is shown when he defeats Jester in combat, breaking two rules of engagement in the process. In another flight, Maverick leaves his wingmen in Hollywood and takes on Viper, "the best pilot alive."

However, Jester manages to defeat Maverick before Maverick can defeat Viper. Then, during a training exercise, tragedy strikes. Iceman breaks formation and Maverick flies through the jet stream from Iceman's F-14, causing his plane to burn out and go into a flat spin.

As Maverick exits the plane, Goose is thrown into the canopy, colliding on impact and killing him. Despite the board of inquiry acquitting Maverick, Maverick feels guilty about Goose's death and is unable to concentrate.

Pete Mitchell considers quitting until he speaks to Viper, who reveals he flew with Maverick's father. In the climax, Maverick, Iceman and Hollywood must embark on a rescue mission to help a disabled communications ship named the SS Layton.

Maverick works with Merlin and during the mission, Hollywood is shot down by the MiGs and Hollywood and Wolfman come out safely. When Maverick flies into battle, Maverick flies through one of the MiGs' jetwashes, but retains control. After recovering, Maverick and Iceman manage to shoot down four of the MiGs, forcing the others to flee.

Maverick throws Goose's dog tags into the sea, and Maverick and Iceman eventually become friends. When offered to return to Top Gun, Maverick decides to become an instructor. Maverick was last seen meeting Charlie at the bar while "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was on.

Years later, a middle-aged Maverick becomes captain of the base, helping the son of one of his deceased friends, Goose.

Say what you want about Tom Cruise , but the man makes great movies. Top Gun from 1986 is one of the best action films ever made and its follow-up Top Gun Maverick (2022) challenges the notion that sequels can never be as good as the original (it was amazing). Sorting a Top Gun costume for Halloween is pretty straightforward—and when in doubt, just chuck on a pair of Aviator sunglasses and people will get the idea.

Top Gun Maverick was finally released in 2022 after being delayed significantly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was supposed to hit cinemas in November 2021 but due to surges in the virus cases, Paramount Pictures postponed its release because the production company—and its star, Tom Cruise —believed firmly that this movie should be experienced in cinemas. When asked if the movie should, like so many other delayed releases, be sent to streaming services first, Cruise responded: “That’s not going to happen. Ever,” per Variety . “I’ve spent a lot of time with theater owners. The people that serve the popcorn, the ones who make this [happen]… I make movies for the big screen.” Part of the reason was that Maverick had been shot in IMAX format with six cameras affixed to the fighter jets. Yes, those fighter jets are actually flying and those actors are experiencing real G-forces within them. Top Gun Maverick finally hit theater screens in May 2022 with overwhelmingly positive reviews. “The action sequences are tense and exuberant, reminders that flight has been one of the great thrills of cinema almost from the beginning,” A. O. Scott wrote in his review for the New York Times . “

Sure, the flight suit is the easy choice and there are plenty to choose from, but if you want people to believe you’re the Top Gun superfan that you are (honestly, how could you not?), there are other references to pull from this duo of adrenaline-fueled, glorified navy advertisements. She turns out to be a TOPGUN instructor, Charlie Blackwood, who “doesn’t date students”, but he pursues her anyway. In the scene where Maverick rides his motorbike to her house, he’s wearing a leather bomber jacket with navy patches sewn onto it, as “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin plays over the top. Will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Revive Our Lust for Aviator Shades?

Every element of Tom Cruise’s onscreen wardrobe was custom-made for the star, costume designer Marlene Stewart reveals—including the big screen’s coolest sunglasses.

Midway through Top Gun: Maverick , in homage to the original Top Gun ’s famous volleyball scene, Tom Cruise and his young acolytes frolic on the beach, playing a game of shirtless touch football. Cruise is just as bare-chested as the rest, clad only in blue jeans and his character’s distinctive, Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. Glistening in golden hour sunlight, Cruise is resplendent.

“Tom is a stickler,” Marlene Stewart, Maverick ’s costume designer, told The Daily Beast. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic, Aviator Ray-Bans, and what I do and what costume designers do is you work with props, who is in charge of making the glasses. Altering them, customizing them. I’m in charge of the look, which includes the glasses, but I work in tandem with props, so that when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the Aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.

“It was really a matter of what size, and how customized was the color of the glass, and the shape. To talk about the scene on the beach, we had fittings with each character to see what’s gonna work for them, but we wanted to establish Tom’s first.”

The Aviators were established as iconic in the original Top Gun (1986). After the movie’s release, sales of Aviator sunglasses leapt by 40 percent; perhaps even more impressively, Aviators have continued to maintain double-digit growth in the following years . The film’s supporting cast members also each rock Ray-Bans that vary depending on the character, but each style works in harmony with the Aviators’ classic shape.

The sunglasses are just one sartorial echo of the original Top Gun . 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick finds Cruise reprising his now-classic 1980s role as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell; the original’s narrative is more or less adhered to—a ragtag band of hotshot pilots must work together to execute an extremely dangerous mission, led by Cruise, who’s aged into the role of teacher. The costumes have only gotten more vigilantly precise.

Cruise, his love interest, played by Jennifer Connelly, and every one of his airborne naval comrades dip in and out of frame like models in a Ralph Lauren ad; Maverick high tails it astride a motorcycle, his jacket billowing in the wind, but only so much.

As for the supporting characters, one standout is Miles Teller as the hotheaded rookie “Rooster.” Teller huffs and puffs through the film rocking a petulant mustache and a pair of Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan shades. Connelly, meanwhile sports the classic Aviators in a shade of golden brown .

The mercenary slickness of the film’s look and feel is no accident. Stewart has a long history in Hollywood; she’s got a particularly established track record when it comes to amplifying unique shades of cinematic masculinity.

One of her earliest collaborations was with Oliver Stone for the Jim Morrison biopic The Doors, and she went on to craft the terrifying T-1000’s look in Terminator 2: Judgement Day . (To my eye, there are more than a few similarities between Robert Patrick’s T-1000 and Cruise’s Maverick, even down to the two actors’ mesmerizing running styles .)

Maverick is also Stewart’s third collaboration with Tom Cruise. “Especially in Top Gun , [Cruise’s character] is very old school in a way, it’s like another period in time when people respected each other and yet they still had individuality and drive and ambition,” Stewart said.

“I had worked with Tony Scott; I did not do the first Top Gun , but I knew the people who worked on it,” Stewart said. “Back in those days, they used original pieces that were around, whether it be an original-issue flight suit or his jeans or his leather jacket.”

Cruise’s onscreen enthusiasm can border on hysterical, so it was essential that his performance in the original was helmed in by his character’s precise, utilitarian wardrobe. Mitchell appears onscreen looking every inch the US Naval Officer in his prime, clad in close-fitting flight suits, rugged bomber jackets, classic denim and, of course, instantly-iconic Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses.

For the new movie, to evoke these shades of nostalgia while ensuring that Cruise’s look was 100 percent contemporary, Stewart and her team went to extraordinary lengths to craft the perfect garments.

“We reproduced the original jacket to kind of change the shape of it, so it wasn’t really too much of that 1980s, oversized, shoulder pad look that was in the original,” Stewart said. “[Cruise’s] physical shape has changed a little bit and the times have changed a little bit. That was the biggest project on the movie. We had gathered almost 40 leather jackets from all over the world from vintage dealers that we Frankenstein-ed together. It had to have the original knit cut on the sleeves. It was maybe a five month process, the whole thing. We had to piece this whole thing together, it was like a Rubik’s Cube.”

While the other elements of Cruise’s wardrobe in the movie look perhaps more standardized and attainable, every single item was custom-made for the star from scratch, down to his white T-shirts and blue jeans, Stewart said. “I worked with a company called Vince that custom-made the jeans that had some stretch in them, that had a boot cut for his cowboy boots,” Stewart said. “We needed to have a higher rise in the back so that when he was riding the motorcycle they worked, and they made other jeans for the scene at the beach.”

“ Top Gun was my much older brother’s favorite movie growing up, so it became my favorite movie,” Yang-Yi Goh , GQ ’s Commerce Editor, said. “It’s so tight and compact, and every scene is so propulsive. When you’re a little kid, the action scenes and fighter jets are the coolest thing on earth, and it’s extremely quotable and quippy. And you have young Tom Cruise, the coolest person who ever existed, looking really cool. All these things left a deep imprint on my brain.”

Cruise’s Aviators in the Top Gun sequel function on a subconscious level: like the star wearing them, they’re a welcome reminder that despite the turmoil that currently defines American life, the classics are still firing on all cylinders. (Cruise has two indelible Ray-Ban moments. The first was Risky Business in 1983, when the actor cackled to high heaven wearing Wayfarers . Ray-Ban sold 200,000 pairs of the shades in 1982, and after the movie came out, Wayfarers sales jumped to 360,000.)

The fashions in the original Top Gun are “very classic and timeless on purpose,” Goh said. “When he’s not in a flight suit, Maverick basically just wears a tight white T-shirt and Levi’s, which is something you could have worn in 1955 or 2022 and looked perfectly normal and cool.”

“Out of all the actors that I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with many, Tom has given me 1,000 percent presence and time to do the job, and you see the results,” Stewart told The Daily Beast. “A lot of actors maybe are not so cognizant of spending that much time, but he is, and it’s really rare.”

When the original Top Gun was released back in 1986, Tom Cruise was a baby-faced 24-year old, not the bona-fide and pumped up action hero we know him as today. In fact, he had to be convinced to take on the role as fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, but seven Mission Impossibles , two Top Guns and a War of the Worlds later and Cruise, who recently turned 60, shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, he looks better than ever. Is it a prodigious work ethic? A gruelling workout regime or a meticulous diet? Who knows (we’d like to), but one thing is for sure: Cruise is oozing body confidence right now, and it shows in his choice of outfits recently.

During the global press run for Top Gun: Maverick , the actor has worn a wardrobe of tight-fitting tops that have shown off all those hours spent in the gym. Fair, given he looks fantastic. But yesterday, while out in London’s Mayfair for an evening of fun, he bravely wore an item of clothing that most of us would wince at in fear: a black, stretchy, velour polo top . The sort of clingy garment that hugs the body. An item which requires a toned physique to wear (granted in Cruise’s case), but takes a certain type of confidence to pull off.

For velour, which is tactile, rich and sheeny, has an ostentatious quality about it. Whether worn in the form of a sweat jacket, blouson or polo (in the case of Cruise) it’s always guaranteed to make you stand out from the crowd. What’s more, it’s become associated with a certain-type of raffishness and wanton sex appeal, which lays in it’s indulgent nature. 

Was he out on the cruise (get it?) for a new romantic partner? Who knows. But the actor’s choice to wear a slinky velour number — which he wore with black jeans and black boots – definitely tells us that this is a man who believes he is in his prime, in peak physical shape and virility, who wants to show off his carefully maintained body to the world. And we’re here for it. After all, who wouldn't want to look like Cruise at 60? And if you’ve got it, flaunt it, right?

Tom Cruise returns for the second installment of  Top Gun , which promises to be an improvement on the first one. However, before the film’s premiere, Cruise teamed up with television host and actor James Corden to promote the movie. In 2018, Tom took James skydiving; in 2022, Tom strapped him into a plane piloted by the  Mission Impossible  star. 

“I’m gonna go up in a 75-year-old plane with someone who isn’t a pilot? Yeah, that sounds like a good idea,”  Corden protested . 

If it were another actor, it’d be difficult to believe that they were a pilot. However, given Tom Cruise’s penchant for performing his own stunts, it’s pretty easy to fathom Cruise having a pilot’s license.

Tom Cruise qualified as a pilot in 1994, nearly three decades ago. Cruise reportedly owns several planes, including a luxury Gulfstream jet and his beloved P-51 Mustang, a WWII fighter that’ll appear in  Top Gun . 

“The P-51 Mustang you see in the movie is actually my plane, so I got to pilot in those sequences,” Cruise told  Hello magazine . “I also got to be in the jet fighter a lot more this time, which was thrilling. It was something I had been working up to.”

Cruise told the outlet that  Top Gun  allowed him to fulfill two dreams: flying and acting. “All I ever wanted to be was a pilot or an actor, so Top Gun was a huge moment in so many respects, including my passion for aviation,” Cruise said. “I got to actually fly in an F-14 jet which was a dream come true, and play a character I loved in Maverick.”

Tom told the PA News Service that he advocated for realism in the new  Top Gun , translating to as little computer trickery as possible. For Cruise, a man with a decades-old flying license, flying would be easy, but the rest of the cast needed intense training. 

For three months, the actors developed skills crafted by Cruise and learned how to film while inside the aircraft. However, few can match Tom Cruise, as Miles Teller admitted that he never got used to the feeling:

“We trained for this for a long time, Tom had us in a flight programme for several months before we ever started filming. But it was never something you really ever got, like, super comfortable with, at least for me. It was something that every time I went up, it really tested me and I felt like I wanted to puke pretty much every time.”

Cruise didn’t get to fly the F-18 Super Hornet in  Top Gun

Cruise may be an experienced pilot, but the military doesn’t hand the keys to one of their most prized assets to anyone with a flying license. 

The military hasn’t given a reason why it didn’t offer Cruise the F-18 Super Hornet, but we think money has a lot to do with it. The jet costs $70 million, nearly half of the film’s $152 budget. Few insurers would accept to insure potential damage of such an aircraft. 

Furthermore, despite having a pilot’s license, Cruise may not have the requisite skill to fly an F-18 safely – placing one in his hands would put lives at risk. The crew and cast filmed using real F-18 jets driven by trained Navy pilots.

Prince William and Tom Cruise Talked Fashion at Gala After the Royal's Top Gun Shoes Were a Hit

The Prince of Wales joked about his headline-making velvet slippers in conversation with the American actor

Prince William reminded Tom Cruise of his fancy flying-themed footwear at London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner .

The Prince of Wales, 41, and the Top Gun star, 61, reunited at the fundraiser at The OWO hotel on Wednesday evening. Their photo opp in matching tuxedos and black bow ties, captured on video and shared to X by Rebecca English of the Daily Mail, prompted the royal to recall one of the most stylish pieces in his closet.

Prince William motioned towards his feet and told the American actor, "I haven’t got my Top Gun slippers on tonight."

Prince William completed his look with shiny black dress shoes for the charity gala, but he was referring to his Crockett & Jones black velvet loafers embroidered with airplanes that made headlines at the U.K. premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in May 2022, the last time he saw Cruise. Each slipper featured an F-18 Super Hornet in honor of the aircraft famously featured in the Top Gun films, but the detail was no surprise for royal watchers. Prince William previously served as a pilot with the Royal Air Force and as an air ambulance helicopter pilot, making his interest in the film — and the fun choice of footwear — a natural fit.

"Having the Royal Warrant for HRH Prince Charles meant that we were gratefully approached to produce the slippers for HRH Prince William on this occasion, proudly turning the slippers around in just 2 weeks, usually a 2-month process. One has little choice but to jump around for such a prestigious customer," a spokesperson for Crockett & Jones said at the time.

"It gives us great pride to be associated with such a wonderful and historic family, and to have two members of the royal family wear our footwear, a just a few weeks before the Jubilee celebration [for Queen Elizabeth ], is nothing short of incredible,” they added.

Cruise has met members of the British royal family on several occasions through the years, and attended the funeral of Prince William's mother, Princess Diana, in 1997. He and Prince William most recently crossed paths at Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London, where the actor chivalrously lent Kate Middleton a hand as she navigated stairs in a long Roland Mouret gown. 

Prince William’s appearance at the London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner came on the first day he returned to royal duty after Princess Kate had abdominal surgery on Jan. 16 and was discharged following a 13-day hospital stay on Jan. 29. Prince William cleared his calendar to support his wife and their three children, Prince George , 10, Princess Charlotte , 8, and Prince Louis , 5, during that time, and he expressed gratitude for the well-wishes sent to his family during his speech at the gala dinner on Wednesday.

One week after the palace announced that Princess Kate was home from the hospital, they revealed that King Charles was diagnosed with cancer . The news was publicized shortly after the King, 75, underwent a procedure to treat a benign enlarged prostate on Jan. 26. The update came one week after the King left the London Clinic , the same hospital where Princess Kate was treated, following a three-day stay after his surgery. (The palace clarified that the monarch does not have prostate cancer.)

Prince William took the stage at the charity gala on Wednesday to give a speech, where he thanked those who made the event possible.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you, also, for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days,” he continued. "It means a great deal to us all."

Keeping the mood light, the Prince of Wales quipped, "It's fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather 'medical' focus. So I thought I'd come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all!"

Prince William praised the "top class care" provided by London's Air Ambulance team, which can bring the hospital emergency department to the scene of an incident anywhere in the city. He spoke from personal experience as a former air ambulance pilot in East Anglia and a patron of London's Air Ambulance since 2020. 

The organization is hoping to raise $19 million by the fall, and Prince William stressed the urgency of the campaign.

"Here in London, the current aircraft have served magnificently," he said. "But our capital city needs a new fleet. And we are Up Against Time. The clue really is in the Appeal's name. By September, we need the two new red birds — decked with the latest kit such as night vision — in our skies.”

Prince William then gave Cruise a special shoutout, referencing his skills in the skies in another film franchise.

"I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my — our — fellow pilot, Tom Cruise," the royal continued. "Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight. And Tom, if you wouldn't mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next Mission Impossible , it would be appreciated. We have all seen on our screens that — how can I put it — you seem to have a different take on 'normal wear and tear' to the rest of us. It's not the kind that buffs out."

Prince William wrapped up his speech by saying, "Anyway, my thanks to everyone. You are all, each and everyone, lifesavers."

The Prince of Wales’ first day back at work began with a morning of investitures at Windsor Castle, conducted on behalf of his father the King. While the duty was announced before Buckingham Palace shared the news about the King’s health, Prince William is expected to step out (like Queen Camilla ) and be the face of the monarchy.

“It is hard with Kate being ill as well, but he will step up,” a source close to the royal household tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's issue.
