The band will stage 44 appearances across North America beginning on February 9 at Biloxi’s Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The itinerary features 30 appearances as support for Journey in arenas across The United States and Canada, with an additional 14 headline performances planned. A tour of Europe follows this Summer. Additional performances will be announced in the coming weeks, with a run of the UK and plans to visit other continents in motion now. Tickets for all appearances are available for purchase here .

Over the past decade, Toto has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The total plays of the band’s collected works across all platforms is now approaching five billion. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. The song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Individually and collectively, the band’s family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles while continuing to remain relevant.

Toto’s last LP was 2018’s  Old Is New . Recently, their multi-platinum single “Africa” garnered 1 billion streams on Spotify. It was famously covered by alt-rock juggernauts Weezer back in 2018. In turn, Toto took a shot at Weezer’s “Hash Pipe.”

Throughout their career, Toto have sold over 40 million records worldwide. The multiple GRAMMY® Award winners have released several rock anthems, including “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” and the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single, “Africa.” Their masterful fourth album, Toto IV, featured the latter two tracks. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and won the GRAMMY® for Album of the Year, while the single “Rosanna” won Record of the Year.

In 2009, Toto were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.

toto band tour 2024

TOTO Announces Early 2024 Headline Shows

TOTO , featuring guitarist Steve Lukather and singer Joseph Williams has announced details of the band's headline appearances in North America within the planned JOURNEY itinerary from February 2024 through April 2024. Additional shows will be shared in the coming weeks. A European tour will be staged in July/August, with seven performances in Germany announced today. The entire itinerary will be made public shortly which includes the band's return to the U.K.

For North America, an artist pre-sale goes live at 10 a.m. local time the morning of Tuesday, November 7 and ends at 10 p.m. local time Thursday evening (Password: DOGZOFOZ). Local pre-sales will open on Thursday with the public on-sale to follow Friday, November 10 at 10 a.m. local time. Tickets for all appearances are available for purchase here .

The band's European tour will be staged in June 2024 and July 2024. General on-sale for appearances announced today will be live on Friday morning at 10 a.m. local time.

Over the past decade, TOTO has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. No individual statistic exhibits this more than achieving the milestone of over 3.4 billion streams at Spotify alone. The total plays of the band's collected works across all platforms is now approaching five billion. Amongst the most listened to recordings, "Africa" accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. The song was recertified by the RIAA eight times platinum.

Individually and collectively, the band's family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 1970s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles while continuing to remain relevant.

Lukather , a.k.a. Luke , shares: "There is a refreshing, optimistic enthusiasm to step into the future.

"As long-tenured members of the band, Joe and I want to be on the road continuing to keep the original legacy of the band alive, bringing the music to our multi-generational fan base.

"In 2023, it was truly humbling to perform in front of close to a million fans. And for 2024, we'll stage appearances in front of even more across the globe.

"I've spent more than four and a half decades of my life nurturing this legacy, while enabling the music to continually exist in the live concert setting."

Williams offers: " Luke and I have been through a lot with one another. He's like a brother to me. Our creative partnership has always enriched our lives. As we look ahead, there is nothing but anticipation to bring everything in our minds to life. I can't think of anyone else on Earth I'd rather collaborate with. He is a lifelong, loyal and gifted friend and band mate…we've become The Dogz of Oz!"

Two and a half years ago, Lukather confirmed to Jeff Gaudiosi of MisplacedStraws.com that there are no plans for TOTO to record new music. "There's not gonna be another TOTO record," he said. "What we do is we continue doing what we do. Joe and I can make [solo] records and have some of the cats on it. And we can go out and play as TOTO . And if we get the audience, we pay off the people that sued us, and we go forward."

Lukather continued: "I'm gonna dig in. I don't roll over easily. I've taken a lot of punches over the last 45-plus years — whatever the hell it is; it's a long time. So I can take a punch, man, and I've taken a whole lot of 'em on falsities. But that's okay. It's behind me now. I let it all go. Peace and love to everybody. I don't carry around any hate. I'm, like, 'Okay, life changes. I'm sorry.' It broke my heart too. But it's like getting over a divorce — you've gotta get back on the horse again and do it. And that's what we plan on doing. There's no malicious vibe or, 'I'm gonna get even with anybody.' It's just such a waste of time. I don't wanna play the games anymore."

Ringo Starr talks hanging with McCartney, why he's making a country album and new tour

toto band tour 2024

To look at Ringo Starr is to observe a legend who looks decades younger than his soon-to-be 84 years.

The regular workouts , jogs and healthy diet can be credited to an extent.

But Starr seems to thrive on work.

Since 2021 he has released four EPs, and a fifth, “ Crooked Boy ,” arrived in April. The four tracks written by musician/producer Linda Perry range from the reflective title track (which includes a Starr-specific line, “I speak of love, I speak of peace”) and the jubilant “Gonna Need Someone.”

Starr also resumed touring with his All-Starr Band in 2022 after pandemic-related closures halted momentum and will return May 22 for a few weeks of shows before another spate of dates in September.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Joining him for this excursion are Men At Work frontman Colin Hay, Toto veteran Steve Lukather , keyboard stalwart Edgar Winter, saxophonist Warren Ham (Toto, Kansas), drummer Gregg Bissonette (David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani) and Hamish Stuart (Average White Band, Paul McCartney).

Chatting from his home studio in Los Angeles, the affable drummer leapfrogged topics from his upcoming country album to his feelings about The Beatles’ final recording to hanging out with McCartney.

Question: You’ve worked with Linda Perry on a couple of songs in the past, and now she’s written all of the songs on your new EP. What is it about her vibe that makes you two click?

Answer: Her songwriting is really great; she plays really great and she does all of her demos in a Liverpool accent (laughs). We just became friends and got on right away. She’s very straightforward , very bossy.

You look like you’re having so much fun in the video for “Gonna Need Someone.” How do you stay so upbeat?

I just always believe in keeping the energy up. It’s never a bad thing to be energized, but I’m quite lucky because I can be the other guy, too. Besides, “Crooked Boy” is out now, and Linda is great and I’m working on a real CD. I haven’t done one in so long.

What can you tell us about it?

It’s a country one. I’m working on it with someone very special – T Bone Burnett. He’s doing stuff in Nashville and he comes to LA and it’s all working out. He came to me with nine songs. It won’t be out until October, at least.

How often do you play your drums if you aren’t on the road?

I don’t even look at them. I’ve never liked just drumming by myself. I always want to be in a band with players. If you play whatever, I’ll play with you all night. (As a kid) I went upstairs the traditional way from all of those black and white movies where the drummer goes upstairs to his kit and hits them. Well in my neighborhood, I was this close to being stabbed! Everyone in the neighborhood was going, SHUT UP! (Laughs.) But I’ll play anywhere. My first band was the guy from next door, Eddie Miles, and my best friend Roy taught us bass and that’s what we’ve done: just keep playing with other guys.

More: Beatles movie 'Let It Be' is more than a shorter 'Get Back': 'They were different animals'

How do you feel about “Now and Then” finally being out?

I did love “Now and Then,” and we did hear it in 1995 and we’d done (the other two vault songs) already, and then it came to a halt. And then I got a call from Paul (in 2022) and he asked, "Do you want to drum on it?" It’s great for me to have John’s (Lennon) voice coming at me. Thanks to Peter Jackson with the machine that can pull out anything from anything. Paul went in with a string section; he worked really hard on it and I just sang on some of it.

Is it sad to think that is the last-ever true Beatles recording?

I think I’m past that, really. I miss them, but we’re getting on with our own things now. Paul and I will have dinner together; we’re still buddies. George (Harrison) and John , I certainly miss them. I’m an only child, and suddenly I had three brothers and it was great.

It seems like you and Paul are spending more time together lately.

If he comes to LA we certainly do something, and when I get to England we’ll do something there. It’s just what we do. We went to Paris together (in March) for Stella McCartney’s clothing line . But really we went there for the lunch. (Laughs.) But no, really, we were hanging out. We went by train and were all sitting in the same carriage. We had a good time.

More: James Taylor talks koalas, the 'gravitational attraction' of touring and Taylor Swift

Most of the guys in the All-Starr Band have been with you for years. What is it about this group that complements the show so well?

When I first started this, I was invited to put a band together and go on tour, and I said yes, and then I said: What do you mean, yes? You‘re the drummer in other people’s bands! But I opened my phone book and called everyone I knew and they all said yes. So I had to close my book.

And there are frequently changes in the lineup.

I’ve had like five new bands. Just to change it up years ago, some people were asked to leave and others brought it. Like (Steve) Lukather was brought in (in 2012). This time … we have Colin (Hay) , who is great and has hits, and Hamish (Stuart) I had in one of the other All-Starr Bands and he came back. But Luke (Lukather), I’ll never get rid of Luke. He has a lifelong ticket. He’s my last best friend. You need time to make best friends. He’s an incredibly good musician and an incredible human being.

How much longer do you see yourself going out for these tours?

Until the end of this year, at least. We have the May-June shows and then the fall. That’s where I get my rocks off playing. I play to all of their songs, they play mine. This band is very close and very interested in the other person. No one is hanging out alone having a cigarette.

Over the past decade,  TOTO  has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career.  No individual statistic exhibits this more than achieving the milestone of over 3.4 billion streams at Spotify alone.

Steve Lukather aka Luke shares, “There is a refreshing, optimistic enthusiasm to step in to the future. As long-tenured members of the band, Joe and I want to be on the road continuing to keep the original legacy of the band alive, bringing the music to our multi-generational fan base. In 2023, it was truly humbling to perform in front of close to a million fans. And for 2024, we’ll stage appearances in front of even more across the globe. I’ve spent more than four and a half decades of my life nurturing this legacy, while enabling the music to continually exist in the live concert setting.” Joseph Williams offers, “Luke and I have been through a lot with one another. He’s like a brother to me. Our creative partnership has always enriched our lives. As we look ahead, there is nothing but anticipation to bring everything in our minds to life. I can’t think of anyone else on Earth I’d rather collaborate with. He is a lifelong, loyal and gifted friend and band mate…we’ve become The Dogz of Oz!”

Well I flew from New Zealand to see the two later shows in Tokyo. From the moments the lights dimmed the stage was filled with a group that could have been doing their first shows in months with the amount of pent-up energy that was unleashed! The 70s era songs could have been new releases from the enthusiasm that they were played with and the songs off the new album deserve to go into the collection of classics. The enthusiasm of the audience of all ages was relentless and only dimmed when the group left the stage! Oh and I should mention that I am 69 years young!! This is a group that don't have the words " bad show "" in their vocabulary and are rocking into their half century. Go see them people you won't be disappointed . I can't wait to see them again. Rock on. Peter

Wow!We waited a very long time to see Uriah Heep, and it was definitely worth the wait!!! I bought the tickets for an anniversary gift to surprise my husband. This is his FAV band. I splurged and bought him the VIP package with a meet and greet. Not only did we rock every minute from the time they started playing, till the band finished the final song, but we got to go upstairs and meet them all, get photos, hugs, and some awesome conversation. I would rate this performance 12 out if 10!!! One of the best, and most fun ever! Great audience participation, great energy, great band!!! Highly recommended!!!

A man in a paisley button-up shirt stands outside, with a large R.V. vehicle visible behind him and a few white flowers in close-up in front of him.

He Sang ‘What a Fool Believes.’ But Michael McDonald Is in on the Joke.

The singer and songwriter with a silky-smooth voice has written a memoir with Paul Reiser that recounts his story of pain and redemption with dashes of humor.

The voice of Michael McDonald has been compared to velvet , silk and sandpaper , melted chocolate and last year, by a besotted 11-year-old girl, an angel . He has harmonized with the best in the business. But his latest duet might cause even the most Botoxed foreheads of Hollywood to furrow.

“How you like us so far?” joked Paul Reiser, the actor and comedian, from one corner of a squishy sofa in McDonald’s Santa Barbara, Calif., aerie on a recent Tuesday morning. He was there to talk about the singer’s memoir, which they wrote together and will be published by Dey Street Books on May 21.

In the other corner, emanating the equanimity that’s as beloved as his baritone, was the man whose 50-plus-year career has included backup vocals for Steely Dan, Elton John , El DeBarge , Toto , Bonnie Raitt and on and on — backup so extensive and distinctive it’s inspired playlists on Apple Music and Spotify . He was wearing a paisley-patterned shirt, black trousers and, as one might expect of an angel who must tread this cursed Earth, puffy Hoka sneakers .

McDonald, 72, has also spent decades in the spotlight, albeit sidlingly, often with his famous blue eyes shut . (“Singing is such an intimate act,” he explains in the book, “and like kissing, it does no real good to see what the other person is doing.”) He led the Doobie Brothers in various iterations with his gospel-inflected keyboard style; released nine solo studio albums traversing multiple genres and continues to make live appearances at venues from Coachella to the Carlyle .

A man in a black shirt and dark pants stands a few feet behind a man in a paisley shirt with a white beard, both outside in a garden near a house with an angled roof.

The book is titled “What a Fool Believes,” after the Grammy-winning hit McDonald wrote in 1978 with Kenny Loggins, though with some hesitation. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s just too obvious,’” he said. “I wanted it to be something clever and mind-provoking, and I couldn’t really think of anything because, you know, I have a problem provoking my own mind.”

He was convinced by Reiser, who among many other projects wrote the best-selling books “Couplehood” and “Babyhood” in the 1990s, and a follow-up, “Familyhood,” in 2011.

“I mean, how lucky am I?” McDonald said.

“Awwww,” Reiser said. But seriously: “He’s very introspective, which you don’t see at first and then you go, ‘Oh, this guy is deeper than you think.’” A beat. “Not that I thought you were shallow!”

As if in a marathon therapy session, they plunged together back to the past. McDonald grew up Irish Catholic, bracketed by two sisters in a suburb of St. Louis. His father was a streetcar driver and ex-Marine, a teetotaler with an eye for the ladies and a beautiful singing voice. His mother worked in a trading stamps store and had a weakness for pep pills. The marriage didn’t last.

He had an Aunt Mame with a Victrola from which, at age 5, he learned to imitate Mario Lanza warbling “ Love is a Many-Splendored Thing ”; an Aunt Bitsy who introduced him to Rodgers and Hammerstein; and an Aunt Ann Catherine whose record collection included, revelatorily, Ray Charles. Burt Bacharach was a big influence, too. Beatles-wise, he gravitated more toward McCartney than Lennon.

“I always related to him,” McDonald said, “because I could sense from him that he heard a lot of the same music I heard — that kind of barroom, Tin Pan Alley chord progression.”

In one devastating passage, McDonald writes of getting his girlfriend pregnant in eighth grade and biking over to confront her parents, who insisted, along with his own, that she give the baby up for adoption. Too young to sort through this emotional wreckage, he steered away. “Disappearing became my MO,” he writes. “Distancing myself from whatever it was that might require accountability.”

He dropped out of high school and joined a series of colorful-sounding bands — the Majestics, the Sheratons, the Delrays, the Guild, the Blue. Old ballrooms; natty threads. Beer and marijuana became staples, and later, after he moved to Los Angeles and began breaking into the big time, cocaine.

Referred to Steely Dan by the drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1973, he “came to rehearsal a few days later and knocked everyone out,” Donald Fagen, the band’s surviving founder, wrote in an email. “There was a serious discussion about whether he should replace me as the lead singer, which would have been my personal preference. But, for some dumb reason, I was voted down. I didn’t insist, and I’ve regretted it ever since. I mean, here’s this monster singer and musician, and he’s also really funny and a sweetheart of a guy. What’s not to like?”

Patti LaBelle called about recording “ On My Own ” (1986) with McDonald, after a solo version went sour. “I said, ‘The person I would love to sing it with is quiet, beautiful Michael,’” she remembered. Recently they crooned it together on a jazz cruise on the Norwegian Pearl where, she said, he confessed nerves beforehand; when he emerged onstage, the crowd went bananas. “He’s one of a kind. He comes out whispering and then — all this power. It’s like he doesn’t even open his mouth, he’s just so laid back.”

Indeed, so constitutionally low-key is McDonald that Loggins, with whom he also composed “ This is It ” and “ I Gotta Try, ” and who released his own memoir, “ Still Alright ,” in 2022, didn’t even know his old collaborator is about to join him on the bookshelves.

On the phone, Loggins remembered the first time he heard McDonald in the Doobies’ “ Livin’ on the Fault Line .” “I just felt like, ‘Oh, this is going to be a major American voice,’” he said. “He kind of goes into a trance when we write, and if I say ‘play it again,’ he won’t remember, so I have to record all the time. We have completely different styles vocally, but blend really well. It’s not logical.”

In 2005, the duo, along with Hall and Oates, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steve Perry and others, were affectionately spoofed in J.D. Ryznar’s web series, “ Yacht Rock .” A strain of the much-maligned catchall “adult contemporary” category was suddenly rebranded as “smooth music”: gleaming with high production values and a general mellifluence; the polar opposite of punk. McDonald was portrayed as the genre’s earnest common denominator: its anchor, its intergenerational secret sauce, who stumbles out of fashion and then rises again when “ I Keep Forgettin ’” is sampled by Warren G in 1994.

McDonald compared the yacht-rock phenomenon to oldies radio. “Even though I was a little ambivalent about both, at first, they turned out to be the two best things that ever happened to us from the ’70s,” he said, “because we kept getting airplay.”

This wasn’t his first time as a figure of comedy. In 1981, in an SCTV sketch, Rick Moranis portrayed McDonald driving intently down a highway in a convertible to clap on headphones and sing bits of backup for Cross’s “Ride Like the Wind” before rushing off to his next gig. McDonald contributed a song to the 1999 “South Park” movie and sang at a fictional “30 Rock” benefit . In “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005), an electronics-store manager played by Jane Lynch is excoriated by an employee for broadcasting a McDonald concert video ad nauseam. (“If I have to hear ‘ Yah Mo B There ’ one more time I’m going to yah mo burn this place to the ground!”) And in 2013 Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake donned silver McDonald wigs to sing “ Row, Row, Row Your Boat ” with him.

We have his current writing partner to thank, or blame, for the chapter title “Doobie or Not Doobie, That Is the Question.” Reiser, an accomplished musician himself who can sit down at the Yamaha and spontaneously ripple off a Rachmaninoff concerto, first encountered McDonald performing during an event at a neighbor’s house. “And in a surge of moxie, I went, ‘I live literally next door, and I got a music studio with two pianos that I put in just in case this ever happened,’” Reiser recalled. “Would you like to come over?’”

A jam session ensued. A friendship developed. Then the pandemic descended. McDonald thought that during lockdown he might apply himself with renewed vigor to his painting hobby . Reiser had another idea. “He’s the only reason the book exists, as far as I know,” McDonald said. “Putting one foot in front of the other was never my strong suit, on my own power. By myself, I become like a blob.”

McDonald’s wife, the singer Amy Holland, wandered briefly into their living room, which is large, cozy and barnlike, with plenty of blankets and candles and a banjo mounted on the wall bearing the visage of her mother, Verna Sherrill Boersma, who did a hillbilly routine as Esmereldy in the 1940s and resembled …. was it Bette Davis? “Celeste Holm,” McDonald said.

He and Holland were married in 1983, with David Pack, the lead singer of Ambrosia performing “Biggest Part of Me” at the reception. They have two adult children, a submissive golden retriever, and a possessive Chihuahua who sleeps in between the couple.

One of their previous pooches cringed at his singing, McDonald noted, and would try to pry his master’s hands off the piano keys every time he played.

“Everyone’s a critic,” Reiser said.

Working with McDonald, he said, was often just a process of having him slow down and fill out anecdotes that, to him, seemed like no big deal — Steely Dan partying in the penthouse of a London hotel, for one. “I’m going, ‘That’s like a Fellini movie!’” One chapter is devoted to an extended bender with the band’s co-founder, Walter Becker , who died in 2017; another features an unintentional acid trip. ( David Gest also makes an appearance.)

“I remember looking to the guys who seem to manage it well — guys who did a little of this and did a little of that but didn’t have a problem like I suspect that I already did,” McDonald said. “Their whole thing was ‘You just got to manage it — you can’t overdo it, man.’” He paused. “And every one of those guys, to a man, is gone.”

Sober since the mid-80s — he said his current vices are “food and sloth” — McDonald is not only still here, but discreetly ubiquitous.

Forget about velvet and silk: The more you read and think and listen, the more his voice seems like a connecting thread running through America’s popular-music tapestry that, if pulled, might unravel the whole thing — or at least, leave a significant, unmendable hole.

And yet, he said, “to this day I keep expecting the doors to fly open and the impostor police to come and grab me and take me out.”

Nemo holds flowers on stage as confetti is released above them

Switzerland wins Eurovision song contest after controversial grand final

Nemo has won the 68th song contest with The Code, after a fraught competition overshadowed by protests over Israel’s inclusion and a shock exit

  • Eurovision 2024: everything we learned – from the Abba swizz to the UK’s wild unpopularity

Switzerland has won the 68th Eurovision song contest, bringing to an end a fraught and at times tumultuous competition overshadowed by a row over Israel’s inclusion and the disqualification of the Dutch contestant just hours before the start of the grand final.

Swiss singer Nemo, who identifies as non-binary, had entered the night as the bookmakers’ third favourite, but saw off frontrunners Croatia and Israel with an enthusiastic performance of their song The Code.

The operatic, drum’n’bass-propelled offering was the runaway winner in the jury vote, which makes up half of the overall score.

The musical performances risked becoming a footnote at the world’s largest live music event, after Dutch contestant Joost Klein was disqualified from the grand final over what the organisers described as an “incident” involving a female member of the production crew.

Runaway winner … Nemo of Switzerland performs the song The Code.

The Dutch broadcaster who sent Klein to the competition said it was “shocked” by the “disproportionate” decision , and declined to hand out the points of its jury at the end of the show.

The suspension heightened an already politically charged atmosphere , since Klein had appeared to vent his disagreement with Israel’s presence at a press conference on Thursday, vocally backing a journalist who had asked Israel’s contestant, Eden Golan, if she thought her presence might endanger the other acts and the attending fans.

Israel had been cleared to compete by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in March, after changing some of the lyrics to Golan’s power ballad Hurricane , a song about the traumatic experience of Hamas’s massacre on 7 October, originally entitled October Rain.

But the question of whether Israel should be allowed to compete or not while engaged in a military conflict in Gaza continued to dominate the run-up to the five-day kitsch extravaganza in the Swedish city of Malmö, with pro-Palestine activists unsuccessfully urging participating artists to join their boycott.

At a large demonstration in Malmö city centre on Saturday, several thousand protesters with Palestinian flags proclaimed their view that Israel should not have been allowed to compete in the first place, citing Russia’s exclusion since 2022 as a precedent.

Eurovision: Greta Thunberg joins thousands in pro-Palestine protest before final – video

Some protesters later moved on to the concert venue south of the city centre, shouting “Shame on you” at fans entering the arena. About 30 people were detained by police.

Inside the arena, the boos were mostly drowned out by cheers as Golan took to the stage. Israel performed strongly in the public vote, coming second only to Croatia.

The boos were mostly drowned out by cheers … Eden Golan, representing Israel, performs Hurricane.

Eurovision’s organisers dismissed rumours that the incident relating to Klein’s suspension had involved any other performers or delegation members, or even an altercation with the Israeli delegation.

“Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his [Klein’s] performance in Thursday night’s semi-final,” they said, reiterating “a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event”.

In a statement, the Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said it was “shocked” by the “disproportionate” decision, saying the singer and rapper had merely made a “threatening move” towards a camerawoman but not touched her.

“Against the clearly made agreement, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the green room. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This wasn’t respected.”

According to the broadcaster, it offered “several solutions” to the EBU, which decided to disqualify Klein anyway. Martin Österdahl, Eurovision’s executive director, drew loud booing from the audience whenever he appeared on the screen during the show.

While rumours about the reasons behind Klein’s suspension ricocheted around the dressing rooms at Malmö Arena, the mood turned febrile. Ireland’s entry, a non-binary singer called Bambie Thug, failed to show up at the final dress rehearsal, fuelling rumours of their pulling out of the event.

Rumoured to have pulled out of the final … Bambie Thug of Ireland.

In a statement, they later said their absence was over a separate disagreement with EBU, relating to the conduct of Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, during the first semi-final.

The French performer, Slimane, interrupted the a cappella section of his song Mon Amour during the dress rehearsal to give a speech about “love and peace”.

In Norway, the country’s ex-contestant Alessandra Mele withdrew from her role as the spokesperson for delivering the jury points, over what she called the “genocide” in the Middle East.

At an event marred by political divisions, the Swiss entry offered a comforting rallying point. Singer Nemo Mettler follows in the footsteps of previous queer, transgender or drag contestants who were launched into the world at Eurovision, from Israel’s Dana International in 1998 to Austria’s Conchita Wurst in 2014.

Their song The Code was high-drama, but the stage show was effective for its simplicity, with the artist acrobatically balancing on a spinning platform.

It was one of several entries that defied Eurovision’s reputation as a showcase for the blandest of eurodance mush.

Croatia’s Baby Lasagna, real name Marko Purišić, had not just been the bookkeepers’ but a fan favourite with Rim Tim Tagi Dim, a song that sounded as if Jon Bon Jovi had secured Rammstein as a backing band; Italy’s Angelina Mango reminded the continent of her country’s proud song tradition with a forceful steelpan number on the unlikely theme of boredom.

Olly Alexander performs Dizzy for the UK.

Britain’s entry, Olly Alexander, came 18th with his song Dizzy, having received zero points in the audience vote.

Klein, a 26-year-old former YouTuber from Friesland, had long been tipped to make an impression at the song contest – just not like this. With lyrics in Dutch, German, Italian and English, and a video that closes on an image of a “European house” in flames, his song Europapa would have also been the first Eurovision song about the European Union since Toto Cotugno’s Insieme 92, which references the Maastricht treaty that was signed that year.

At the pro-Palestine rally in the city centre on Saturday afternoon, one participant waved a “Twelve points go to Joost Klein” placard. Politics and pop had become intertwined in ways that were difficult to untangle.
