Performance

The new Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft is designed to produce Low/Mid launch angles and Low-ball spin rates. After playing the 23’ Tour AD CQ since last fall, I found my Accuracy and Distance increased greatly. I’ve hit the driver this year with some of my personal best results, which I attribute to having a great head and shaft combination for my swing. The Tour AD VF , has a slightly lower launch angle, so I was able to turn up the loft on my driver and gain an advantage in peak high without as much spin. The stability of the shaft produced even more personal best yardages, both longer and straighter. Just when I think they have an incredible shaft for my driver, they come up with another one that works exceptionally well!

The new Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft utilizes the same TORAYCA ® T1100G carbon-fiber pre-preg with NANOALLOY ® technology as several Tour AD shafts from recent years. This provides the tip section of the shaft with additional shaft stability, exceptional feel and precise ball control.

Graphite Design Tour AD GT: Editor Review

Pros: Extremely smooth, and stable. The mix of blue, white and silver looks awesome.

Cons: Costs as much as most new drivers — $380.

Bottom Line: The Tour AD-GT shaft is a great extension of the Tour AD line, providing all of the smoothness Graphite Design is known for in a profile that’s slightly softer than the company’s low-launch, low-spin Tour AD BB shaft . That makes it great for players who need more spin, or as a fairway wood shaft for players who enjoy the BB in their driver.

With the addition of the GT, Graphite Design’s premium line of Tour AD Shafts now comes in four different profiles.

The company’s best-known shaft, the Tour AD DI, is the orange-and-white model that has been used for several years by Tiger Woods. The company’s next most-popular shaft, the Tour AD BB, is the company’s lowest-launching, lowest-spinning shaft.

Graphite Design’s Tour AD DJ is a slightly spinnier version of the DI. That means it’s a good fairway wood shaft for golfer’s who like the feel of the DI in their driver, and also works for golfers who don’t spin the ball enough with the DI.

The GT has the same relationship to the BB. But while it’s slightly softer than the BB, it’s slightly stiffer than the DJ, providing a lower trajectory with less spin.

According to Graphite Design, the GT has a mid-trajectory, while maintaining an optimal amount of spin.

The GT is available in five different flexes, from R2 to X, and four different weights, from 50 to 80 grams. Like the rest of the Tour AD line, the GT sells for around $380.

I’ve been a fan of Graphite Design shafts for a very long time. Years ago, I loved the company’s “Tour AD Quattro Tech” shaft so much that no matter the driver head I was playing, that pretty green shaft would be in it.

Through the years, I’ve experimented with pretty much every high-end shaft made, from prototypes to retail, and have always come back to a Graphite Design shaft in my driver. There’s something about the feel that has always worked well for me.

Recently I’ve been playing the Graphite Design Tour AD DI. I’ve loved everything about it and have actually had it in play for the last three years.

Although I did a little experimenting with the Tour AD DJ and BB, I always went back to the DI. It wasn’t so much the ball flight changes or spin differences between the shafts, as I found them minimal for myself. My confidence in the DI had grown so much and I had come to build so much trust in it, it was hard for me to make a complete change. Yet when the Tour AD GT came out, like the DJ and BB, I had to give it a try.

Performance

I was really pleased with the smoothness of the shaft through the impact area. It was slightly more tip stiff than the DI, but in no way had a boardy feeling. My clubmaker built it exactly to the same CPM’s that I had in my other Miura SIT 460 driver with the DI, so I was comparing apples to apple. And the differences were genuinely noticeable

I found the trajectory to be a tad lower with the GT —  about 1 degree on a launch monitor — but I was still able to get quite a bit of carry with it. What I particularly enjoyed about the GT was that no matter how hard I swung, the shaft never felt overpowered. I’ve never been one to believe the torque numbers that shaft companies specify, but according to the Graphite Design website, the GT 6X that I tested has 3.1 degrees of torque in a 46 inch shaft (I tested it at 45.5 inches).

The past months of testing have also proven to me the workability of the GT. Although I have a Tour AD DI set up identically in a Miura SIT 460, I’ve found the ability to control my trajectory a bit more simpler in the GT over the DI.

Spin numbers have also been great with the GT — about 200 to 300 rpms lower and very consistent — and the extra yards I’ve been getting out of my driver have been extremely pleasing.

Looks and Feel

The GT has the familiar AD paint job in a lustrous blue color with white rings, and the blue fades to a silver blue towards the butt. I can’t lie, as ridiculous as it may sound, one of the features that immediately grabbed me wanting to try it was the color. I love the looks of the shaft!

The Takeaway

Graphite Design has produced another super shaft with the Tour AD GT. Its feel, workability and playability have been astounding. Even the looks of it, which initially grabbed my attention, are sweet!

Anyone who’s played and liked Graphite Design shafts in the past will immediately find a familiar smoothness in the GT, however, it’s bumped up a few notches. The GT is a true tribute to the Graphite Design ideals of never letting a shaft hit the market that doesn’t excel in feel.

If you get a chance to try a friend’s driver with a GT or if your clubmaker stocks them, do yourself a favor and give it a swing. I highly recommend it as one of the best new shafts of the year.

On Monday evening, inside the swanky, second-story “Coach House” event center in the Palisades Village, just minutes down the road from the 2024 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, Tiger Woods and TaylorMade officially announced their new apparel/footwear/accessory line, called “Sun Day Red.”

The Sun Day Red website officially launched on Monday night during the event, and the products are set to go on sale starting May 1.

The “Sun Day Red,” or “SDR” name will be self-explanatory for most golf fans, since he’s been wearing a victory-red shirt on Sunday’s for his entire professional career, but Woods explained the meaning of Sun Day Red at the launch event:

“It started with mom. Mom thought – being a Capricorn – that my power color was red, so I wore red as a junior golfer and I won some tournaments. Lo and behold, I go to a university that is red; Stanford is red. We wore red on the final day of every single tournament, and then every single tournament I’ve played as a professional I’ve worn red. It’s just become synonymous with me.”

The Sunday Red outfit has worked to perfection for his 82 PGA Tour victories, including 15 majors, so why not make an entire apparel line based on the career-long superstition?

As I learned at Monday’s launch event, the new Sun Day Red line includes much more than just clothing. To go along with a slew of different golf shirt designs and colorways, there were also windbreakers, hoodies, shoes, hats, headcovers, ball markers and gloves on display.

The upscale event was hosted by sports media personality Erin Andrews, with special guests David Abeles (CEO of TaylorMade) and Tiger Woods himself.

As explained by Abeles, the Sun Day Red brand is an independently-run business under the TaylorMade umbrella, and is based in San Clemente, California (rather than Carlsbad, where TaylorMade headquarters is located), and it’s run by a newly-formed, independent group. Brad Blackinship, formerly of Quiksilver and RVCA, is the appointed president of the new brand.

As for the logo itself, obviously, it’s made to look like a Tiger (the animal), and is comprised of 15 tiger stripes, which correspond with Woods’ 15 major championships. While the logo may need a 16th stripe if Woods adds a major trophy to his collection, it makes perfect sense for the time being.

The golf/lifestyle line is meant to combine premium precision and athletic comfort, while still having plenty of wearability and style off the course. Like Woods said on stage at the event, he wants to be able to go right from the course to dinner wearing Sun Day Red, and that was exactly the aesthetic on display at the event on Monday.

Titleist launches new Vokey WedgeWorks 60 “A” grind wedge

The menu of grind options just got more expansive for Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks consumers, with the addition of a “60A” wedge to the lineup.

Previously, Vokey offered seven main grind options for players with various needs :

• T Grind: The narrowest sole option, which is widely used by PGA Tour players, and has low bounce
• L Grind: The lowest bounce option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for maximum versatility
• F Grind: An all-purpose grind that’s best for full wedge shots played with a square face
• S Grind: A neutral grind, best for full shots played with a square face
• M Grind: A versatile grind that’s for players who want to open and close the face for various shots
• D Grind: A higher-bounce wedge that’s for players with a steep swing angle, but want to play shots from various club orientations
• K Grind: The highest-bounce wedge option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for versatility

Titleist has now added the “A” grind, which has actually already been played on the PGA Tour by golfers such as Tom Kim, who used an A-grind to win three times on the PGA Tour, Wyndham Clark, who won the U.S. Open using an A-grind, and Max Homa, who used an A-grind at the 2023 Open Championship.

According to Titleist, the Vokey WedgeWorks 60A wedge is a low-bounce option that’s for golfers with a shallow angle of attack, and who play in firmer conditions. It has a “smoothed-out” sole for a faster feel through the turf, helping some golfers slide under the ball easier at impact.

“The most important club for me, probably in my bag, is this A grind,” Clark said, according to a Titleist press release. “I use the SM9 60-degree A grind, which is a low bounce 60 that is very versatile. I’m able to – on tight lies, rough, wet lies, firm lies, whatever it is – hit the shot I want, and with the amount of spin I want, trajectory and everything.”  

Apparently, Geoff Ogilvy played a large part in the A-grind coming to life.

“I spoke with Geoff (Ogilvy), and we got on the topic of Australian golf courses and how they compared to courses in America, and around the world,” said Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill, in a press release. “I asked him some specific questions, which resulted in an idea to design another lob wedge grind option that complemented the firm links-style conditions that players face – not just in Australia and Europe – but globally. Geoff has always been a low bounce player in his 60-degree, so I took his 60.04L wedge and removed the ribbon, resulting in a grind that moves through the turf quickly with very little resistance.” 

The new Vokey A-grind will be available on Nov. 7, selling for $225 each. Custom options include up to six toe engravings, 10-15 character stamping options, the Flight Line alignment feature option, and custom shafts/grips/ferrules are available.

GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test

Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT , development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft Review

Lucky for us, Graphite Design has released a second shaft in 2023 – the Tour AD VF “Victory Force.” This sleek black and red shat fits the low spin, low-to-mid launch profile and one of the stiffest tip sections out of all their offerings.  As you come to expect, the AD VF offers the best of modern materials in Japanese golf design and manufacturing.

It’s been a few iterations since we’ve seen the boldest and most vibrant Graphite Design graphics show up! In previous years, we had the iconic and vibrant Tour AD DI, older classics like the highlighter yellow AD MT, or the shimmering turquoise AD UB . Like this year’s other earlier release in the AD CQ , this shaft comes in with a glossy black base color. The new Tour AD VF is accented by a deep red…

My opinion is that it’s traditional and classy, and very understated. A bit “stealthy” if you get what I’m saying. Depending on your level of nerdiness, you can even think of it as a Sith Lightsaber too!

How Does it Feel?

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF has, in my opinion, one of the more unique feels of any shaft that the company offers. This company has attained a reputation for smoothness which you’ll often hear people comment on regardless of which shaft you choose from the family. You never hear “boardy” or “unstable” or “loose” when talking about Graphite Design.

For the AD VF, the company has created a profile that moves from firm to very stiff (their terms) as you move from the handle to the tip. They’re using TORAYCA M40X and T1100G carbon fiber materials to create those sensations in this shaft. And yeah, you can feel that. For me, the AD VF has the expected smooth feel, but a much more satisfying kick at the end. I think back a few years to the AD XC which also started softer at the handle and gradually stiffened to the tip. Having it just a bit tighter in the hands really makes this one fun.

On-Course Performance

I got a chance to spend two weeks testing my current favorite, the Graphite Design AD CQ, alongside the AD VF at my home away from home, Marquette Golf Club’s Greywalls course. It’s a demanding driving course and while length is not imperative, hitting the right shot shapes is a must. I tried to hit bombs, tried to flight it, and quite possibly mixed in a few absolute stinkers in there too.

While Graphite Design slots this in as a low to mid flight shaft, I felt my stock swing here kept it closer to mid than low. Good shots started low, but it seemed to keep rising to nearly the same peaks and windows as the AD CQ (which is a much higher launching profile on paper). Visually, I did not think this spun as much as the AD CQ either, but it didn’t cruise through the wind like the lowest of the low spin shafts I’ve hit. I’m not a huge swing speed player, so the truly fast players may experience it slightly different.

The adjustment period I had with this one was getting rid of the big slice. That very stiff tip sometimes makes it hard to close the club face, but that’s more of my issue! I’d even say that it helps keep that left side out of play for me. I felt like I could give the AD VF everything I had. It held up well to both aggressive swings, but I could also finesse it as needed. I found I could flight it low pretty easily, which is nice… and also something I cannot do with the AD CQ!

I don’t think my perspective would really change anything. The point Jon makes is valid in that the tip section is stiffer and would translate into a different player’s swing. That experience, in my opinion, makes it an applicable “real world” review.

Plus, there’s not enough time in the day for us to double up the reviews 🙂

I’ll send it over to Ol Bill’s Clubratory for an adapter change and give him a few whacks if he likes! He does bring a bit more heat than me (probably because as old washed up hockey players he was a forward and I was a mere goalie) but we’ve both gotten good use out of shafts with wildly different profiles along the way.

However, the cool thing about Graphite Design is that they’re one of the most fine-tuneable golf shafts out there. This one was a 5x, but I’ve played 6x and 7x in Graphite Design shafts before and gotten great results. The tip stiffness is for sure a main feature of the AD VF. It tested well for me, but on game day, I’ve typically been going with the AD CQ or the AD VR… again two wildly different profiles. Pays off to test em all!

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.

Shafts are tip trimmed (if required) to manufacturer’s recommendations. For steel shafts, we abrade the tips. For graphite shafts, we remove the polyurethane coating. When you receive your shaft, all you need to do is mix epoxy, install and align. After the epoxy is cured, cut to your final playing length from the butt end and install the grip.

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is a low launch, low spin shaft that wants your most aggressive swings.  Excellent dispersion.  Stout, one-piece feel.

Introduction

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is at the center of one of the happiest coincidences in recent golf equipment history.  Shortly after its introduction, this red and black shaft made its way into the bag of the golfer who made red and black his signature, Tiger Woods .  With the kind of hype that money can’t buy, the VF – which stands for Victory Force – is now available to golfers everywhere.  I tested one to see if it can help power your on course victories this season.

While Graphite Design claims that the Tour AD VF wasn’t made with Tiger in mind, it would be hard to imagine a shaft more perfectly designed for the Big Cat.  The upper is a deep, rich red that is visually stunning, especially in contrast with the jet black lower portion.  It’s a great demonstration of the fact that you don’t need gaudy graphics to be eye-catching if you pick the right colors.

Speaking of graphics, the Graphite Design Tour AD VF sticks to the script of the Tour AD shafts that have come before.  The “Graphite Design” branding is split over the color shift.  On the “logo down” side, there are simply black and red rings.  With the exception of the small “Accuracy & Distance” mark, the lower third of the shaft is free of distractions .

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF sits at the top of the Graphite Design pyramid of stiffness .  This is their stiffest profile, rating a Firm+ (butt), Stiff (mid), Very Stiff (tip) from Graphite Design.  The shaft nearest in tip stiffness is the Tour AD UB [review HERE ] which rates a Stiff+.

Giving the Tour AD VF a wiggle, I felt just a hint of flex in the mid section.  During the swing, that largely went away.  This is a shaft for the player that wants a “one-piece” feel without the shaft bending or kicking noticeably.  It’s not harsh feeling, but it does demand a strong effort from you.

In the past, I’ve described some super stiff shafts as laughing at your strongest swings.  In X-flex (the correct flex for my speed), the Graphite Design Tour AD VF didn’t laugh at me, but I knew I was never going to “win.”  It was like running with a friend who is much faster than you but isn’t trying to hurt your feelings .  When I bumped up to the TX, I did feel laughed at – I don’t have the speed to make that work.

Finally, I was able to compare the Tour AD VF to the modern classic Tour AD DI [review HERE ].  Both shafts are rated low spin by Graphite Design, but the AD DI feels completely different with a smooth, pronounced kick.  This is a great illustration of the fact that not all low spin shafts need to feel the same.

Performance

The calling card of the Graphite Design Tour AD VF is low launch, low spin .  Those were the first two things that I noticed when I started my testing.  Virtually every drive came out on a piercing trajectory and hit the ground running.  If you’re looking to bring down your spin or get more out of drives in a windy environment, the Tour AD VF will deliver.  For players that want low spin without the low launch, you might consider the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ [review HERE ].

As I noted earlier, this is a shaft that wants to be swung aggressively, and it encourages that by keeping the dispersion tight .  What’s unique about the Tour AD VF – at least for me – is that it’s not strictly “anti-left” in the way that some low/low shafts are.  I was able to hit a soft draw or a soft cut equally well.  Where it excels is in keeping those shot shapes gentle.  Unless I made a really poor swing, I didn’t see the ball curving more than I wanted.

When I went to the Graphite Design Tour AD VF in TX flex, it felt much more “anti-left.”  Even with an aggressive swing and a strong intent, I could barely square the face, let alone get the ball to draw.  If you’re seeking a hooker-killer, the AD VF can be it, you may just need a stiffer flex.

I also ran the VF against the Tour AD DI which felt world’s different.  First, I could dial my swing down to sub-100% effort, which was refreshing after numerous all-out swings.  Also, my dispersion shifted left.  I don’t think the AD DI is particularly draw-biased, but compared to the AD VF, it felt that way to me.

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF is offered in weights ranging from 40 to 80 grams .  At the lightest weight, the Tour AD VF is available in stiff, regular, and senior flexes.  Moving up to 50 grams retains those three options and adds the X flex.  At 60 grams, there is a stiff/regular, stiff, X, and Tour X.  The 70 gram model has just stiff and X.  Finally, at 80 grams GD offers X and Tour X.

While I would not typically suggest that recreational players emulate Tiger Woods’s equipment decisions, the Graphite Design Tour AD VF shaft is one that you might consider.  If you’re a high spin player who wants to get into more optimal numbers, this is definitely one to try at your next fitting.

What kind of numbers are you looking for when testing out a shaft? I tried the VF found your review very similar to my impressions

I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking what numbers I think are optimal or what metrics I’m using to evaluate the shaft?

Just curious if there’s a certain criteria you look for in choosing a shaft that works for you

Because of my impact dynamics, I’m able to get a lot of distance out of almost any shaft – I don’t need a shaft to reduce spin for me. Because of that, my focus is on feel and dispersion.

I swing about 105mph but generate high spin. I might try this shaft out. Just deciding between the S and X flex. Do you recommend a certain flex at 105MPH?

My recommendation is always to get fit. With this shaft, I think a stiff could easily stretch to 105 MPH depending on the player’s feel preference.

How does the VF feel in the butt section ? I’m a lefty swinging right handed so I pull hard with my left arm in the transition and I always had issues issue with GD shafts that I find too soft (for my swing) in the handle. Curious also to know how it compares to a Ventus Red or Blue feel wise. Thanks

What, no price? Your articles seem to always have a price point. Must be $1k or something crazy like that.

I rarely put the price in shaft reviews because not many golfers buy them online, they get them from a fitter, and prices vary. Graphite Design tends to be $350-400.
