Start your tour at Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square is where our walking tour begins. This iconic landmark is steeped in history and features a towering column topped by Admiral Nelson's statue. But that's not all; Trafalgar Square is also known for its resident pigeons. In addition to the many feathered friends, you'll also find the National Gallery located here.

Buckingham Palace

Next, we'll stroll down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace. This route is in honour of Queen Victoria, who was known for her love of the area. If you're lucky enough to be in London during the summer months, you can catch the daily Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace, which takes place at 10.45 AM. If you're visiting during the rest of the year, don't worry - you can still witness this iconic ceremony on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Birdcage Walk

From Buckingham Palace, our tour takes us to the picturesque Birdcage Walk. This delightful pathway has a rich history - Samuel Pepys even mentioned it in his 1600s writings. The name of the walk itself dates back even further, to the reign of King James I. As we make our way down Birdcage Walk, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views of St. James's Park and the abundance of greenery surrounding us.

Westminster Abbey

Our next stop on the tour is the awe-inspiring Westminster Abbey, a Gothic masterpiece that has played host to an incredible 39 coronations since 1066. The sheer grandeur and beauty of this magnificent building will leave you speechless, and it's a must-see on any visit to London. From the intricate stonework to the towering spires, every detail of Westminster Abbey is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the people who built it.

Houses of Parliament & Big Ben

As we continue, we'll soon encounter one of the city's most iconic landmarks - the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben (also known as Elizabeth Tower). The Houses of Parliament is the home of British politics, where the country's most important decisions are made. Meanwhile, the towering Big Ben clock tower stands proud next door, casting its shadow over the city below. Seeing these two impressive buildings standing side-by-side is truly a sight to behold, and it's no wonder they're a popular tourist destination.

Westminster Bridge & London Eye

Crossing over Westminster Bridge is an experience in itself, with its iconic structure that has been in place since 1750. As you step onto the South Bank, you'll soon come across another must-visit attraction - the London Eye. The towering Ferris wheel was built for the millennium, and it has since become one of the city's most popular places to visit. A ride in one of its capsules is well worth it for the panoramic views of the city, although the queues can be a bit daunting.

South Bank Centre

Our next stop on the tour is the vibrant South Bank Centre, a hub of cultural activity in the heart of London. This lively area is known for its summer events, which draw in crowds from all over the world. From music festivals to outdoor performances, there's always something happening at the South Bank Centre. But even if you're not here during the summer months, the area is still a great place to relax and unwind. You can enjoy a leisurely picnic on the grassy banks of the Thames or take a moment to sit and soak up the atmosphere. With its stunning views of the river and the city skyline, the South Bank Centre is a must visit.

Book Stalls underneath Waterloo Bridge

As we continue our walk along the South Bank, we'll soon discover one of the area's hidden gems - the book stalls under Waterloo Bridge. This collection of secondhand booksellers is a paradise for any book lover, offering everything from vintage pieces to modern bestsellers. You can easily spend hours browsing the shelves, chatting with friendly vendors, and soaking up the unique atmosphere of this quirky spot. And even if you're not a big reader, the book stalls are still well worth a visit for their vibrant energy and undeniable charm.

OXO Tower & Tate Modern

Continuing along the South Bank, we'll soon find the OXO Tower and Tate Modern. The OXO Tower is a true city symbol, with its sleek Art Deco design and stunning riverside location. It's a great spot to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat and take in the views of the Thames. And just a stone's throw away is Tate Modern, one of London's most popular art galleries. With its impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, this museum is a must-visit for any art lover. Take your time exploring the galleries, and don't forget to snap a photo or two of the iconic OXO Tower.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre & Millennium Bridge

Next, we’ll approach two more iconic landmarks - Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Millennium Bridge. The Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the original theatre where Shakespeare's plays were first performed over four centuries ago. You can catch a show here or simply take a tour to learn more about the rich history of this beloved institution. And just a short walk away is the Millennium Bridge, a stunning pedestrian suspension bridge that offers panoramic views of the city skyline. Crossing the bridge is an unforgettable experience, with the river Thames stretching out beneath you and some of London's most famous landmarks visible in the distance.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

Our next stop on this walking tour of London is St. Paul's Cathedral, a true masterpiece of English Baroque architecture designed by Sir Christopher Wren. This impressive cathedral has played a vital role in the city's history, serving as the site of numerous important events, including the funerals of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. A visit to St. Paul's is a must for any visitor to London, with its breathtaking interior, stunning dome, and rich history. Explore the cathedral, from the awe-inspiring Whispering Gallery to the ornate Golden Gallery at the top of the dome.

Cannon Street/City of London

Walk along Cannon Street through the historic "City of London". This is one of the city's oldest parts and a true testament to London's rich history, with old and contemporary buildings standing side by side. It's a fascinating area to explore, with plenty of hidden gems and historical sites waiting to be discovered.

The Monument

Our next stop is The Monument that marks a pivotal event in the city's history. The Monument, located in the heart of the City of London, is a tribute to the Great Fire of London in 1666, which destroyed much of the city and left thousands homeless. The Monument is a striking piece of architecture, with a stunning spiral staircase that winds its way up to a breathtaking viewing platform at the top. From here, you can take stunning views of the city skyline and reflect on the resilience of London and its people in the face of disaster.

The Monument. Photo. Majaiva via canva.com.jpg

Tower of London

Our walking tour of London takes us further along Lower Thames Street, and we soon find ourselves at one of the city's most iconic landmarks - The Tower of London. This historic fortress has stood for over 900 years and is home to many fascinating stories and legends. Here, you can observe the famous ravens that roam the grounds (and are said to protect the tower) and interact with the Beefeaters - the ceremonial guardians of the tower who have been a fixture here since the 16th century. But the real highlight of any visit to the Tower of London is undoubtedly the chance to see the Crown Jewels housed in ancient prison buildings. These glittering treasures have been part of the British monarchy for centuries and are a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the royal family.

Tower of London. Photo. Gannet77 via canva.com.jpg

Tower Bridge

From here we’ll see Tower Bridge, a beautiful example of Victorian engineering and has been a beloved landmark of the city since its completion in 1894. But we're not quite finished yet! Just a short walk away, we come across St. Katharine Docks - a charming marina surrounded by cafes, bars, and restaurants. It's the perfect spot to relax and refuel after a long day of exploring London. So why not treat yourself to a refreshing drink or a delicious meal while taking in the sights and sounds of this peaceful marina?

Dickens Inn

Our final stop on this London walk brings us to the famous Dickens Inn, an 18th-century pub with a rich history and plenty of character. This charming establishment is located in the heart of St. Katharine Docks and is the perfect place to end our two-hour journey through London. Whether you're looking for a pint of ale, a hearty meal, or simply a cosy spot to rest your feet, the Dickens Inn has something to offer everyone. So, sit back, relax, and soak up the atmosphere of this iconic London pub - the perfect ending to a perfect day in the city!

Using our London self-guided walking tours

These walks are designed as an aid to exploring Central London independently. We believe the best way of seeing London is on foot, supplemented by the use of public transport where required. These notes have focus on what you will see and where, no attempt is made to be a substitute for a good guide book on London.

With a good London street map or map app on your phone you'll have no problem following this walk and be fully equipped to make interesting diversions and adaptations with confidence.

The four walks here cover much of the main areas of Central London a first time visitor will want to cover. These walks encourage visitors to explore London independently and uncover the joys of walking London. You'll be surprised how much you can cover and how much more you see by walking.

London Icons Walk   City of London Walk   Kensington Walk   London Shopping Walk   Professionally guided walking tours London

1 - The London Icons Walk

St James's Park, Buckingham Palace

This walk as its title suggests, covers many of the major blockbuster reasons that draws first time visitors to London.

The major sights that you must bring back a picture of: Buckingham Palace , Big Ben, Westminster Abbey , Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and many more, are featured on this self-guided walk.

We show you how to link these together into a memorable first day in London and many other fascinating places as well.

St James's Park is at the centre of this circular walk, a great place for a breather and some rest and recreation.

London Icons Walk

2 - The City of London Walk

Tower of London

The original City of London was built to the east of the area most visitors today visit - Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the West End entertainment area.

All the above places were outside the original walled city, now called the City of London. Today the City of London is the main business area, a major world financial centre. But as the area is London's oldest its full of interest.

The main formal sights of this walk are Tower Bridge, Tower of London , St Paul's Cathedral and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

The joy of this walk for many people though will be savouring the non tourist atmosphere and understanding London better both past and present. Its a great place to poke around and explore.

City of London Walk

3 - The Kensington Walk

Kensington Palace London

Just to the west of the very centre of London is Kensington . Many people will have their accommodation here.

This relatively short leisurely walk starts out in Hyde Park / Kensington Gardens, London's largest Royal Park .

After a visit to Kensington Palace , it's a short walk over to the Albert Hall and the South Kensington Museums.

For most people the museums here will keep you occupied for a full day, each one of them is free.

Just before you get to the Albert Hall you come to the impressive Albert Memorial.

The walk finishes with some upmarket shopping in Knightsbridge where Harrods is situated, just 10 minutes walk from the museums.

Kensington Walk

4 - The London Shopping Walk

London China Town

Yes, the walk does cover the tourist haunts of Oxford Street , Harrods and Hamleys toy shop.

But it is also enjoyable for those who are not great fans of mainstream retail therapy.

We also cover some specialist areas. Electronics at Tottenham Court Road, the music scene at Denmark Street and books at Charing Cross Road.

There's also China Town, the gentlemen's outfitters of Savile Row and Jermyn Street, and the luxury shops of Bond Street amongst others.

And of course Oxford Street, Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Harrods and Harvey Nichols at Knightsbridge

Shopping Walk

The London All in One tour with Sinead was amazing! I saw and learnt so much. Sinead is very knowledgeable about all the sites and gave great recommendations on things to do and places to eat. She also had a personal microphone so it was easy to hear her in a big group. When people got separated from the group, she sent them her location and we were able to regroup. She was very personable and we saw so much during our time together. I did the tour on a Saturday at 10:00 am. Tour began outside Green Park Station. It was easy to find the tour guide. This tour is 6 hours and I saw sites in Westminster, City of London, and additional sights. There is a lunch break halfway through the tour. The tour ends outside the Tower of London. To name a few, we saw Buckingham Palace, The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, 10 Downing St., Churchill War Rooms, Trafalgar Square. We didn't go inside the places, just the outside of it. Though there was no changing of the palace guards on Saturday due to preparations for the coronation and Easter, we were able to see changing of the horse guard. Sinead knew exactly where to stand to have the best view. Sinead also has YouTube videos so definitely check out her channel if you are traveling to London. Free tours by foot are pay what you like tours. I highly recommend this tour if you want to get an overview of London's history and see iconic sites.

Well worth it. Had a fun, Informative guide. The art is one of a kind street art. Wear walking shoes and take some water.

I absolutely would recommend the Street Art walking tour. Our guide, Nathan, was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, on time and his manner of engaging with tour patrons was fun. Definitely worth the time, about two hours of walking around Shoreditch.

This tour was amazing. I was a bit skeptical because it was free. But it's actually pay what you think it's worth at the end. First, the tour guide wore a personal microphone, which I very much appreciate as it allowed us to hear well walking through the city. When we walked near Buckingham Palace, WE SAW THE KING!!! Our tour guide knew exactly where to stand for us to see him drive-by. Now I have to say, we got Lucky this day. Our tour guide doesn't know the King of England's schedule, but she does know all the environmental clues and she always has her "radar" on looking for "royal movement." She was very knowledgeable with everything she showed us. Changing of the guards, where the horses would be, ETC... she made sure we had a front row seat to every bit of the action. We paid 50 pounds at the end of this tour. I would've paid more had I brought more money. BRAVO!!!

I have just returned from spending about a week in London and I must say the Free Tours by Foot is the best way to learn about the history and the quirky details of London from locals. I had such a wonderful experience and would not hesitate to take all of the tours available. I highly recommend the London All in One Day Tour with Margaret, she was so knowledgeable and humorous. Just be sure to bring comfortable shoes and prepare to take in all the sights and knowledge this tour has to offer. We were also able to enjoy another wonderful tour from Canice through this company. Just imagine a stand up comedian giving you the interesting facts and history tour of London. We were lucky to catch his World War 2 tour and his Mayfair tour. Overall, all the tour guides were amazing and knowledgeable. I highly recommend fitting a tour with them. Free Tours by Foot is such a great concept for tipping what you can, but please remember to tip your guides well if you had enjoyed your tour!

I booked online a Borough Market tour in London with Free Tours by Foot. They sent me several reminder emails that I must give 24 hours notice to cancel. I arrived at meeting location 15 minutes early and waited 30 minutes. No one appeared and I sent a text to number indicated in email but no response. I also sent an email and still no response. I read all the glowing reviews and do not understand their awful treatment of me.

I can not even begin to described how much we love Margaret! She's the best, kept us the whole day entertained. She has a lot of knowledge and gives you insight details regarding the history of London and also local pubs, transportation, etc. I would definitely recommend her. If you only have a chance to do something in London do this.

Gregory Simpson - Graffiti and Street Art Tour Absolutely loved this walking tour in the East End! One of my favorite things we did while visiting London. Gregory gives a fantastic tour & shows a wide variety of street art and graffiti. He's extremely knowledgeable and ready to answer questions. I highly recommend this tour!

Sinead was amazingly friendly and punctual. She is a great tour guide, I could not recommend her more. We took her Jack the Ripper tour, which she absolutely killed! She made it absolutely chilling and scary enough! We took her Rock n Roll tour as well and the stories she told were so interesting. If you're going on these tours take Sinead !

Fabulous and educational tour. Margaret (part of the admin staff as a veteran guide) was our leader, she's hilarious and has wonderfully deep knowledge of London and England's history. We kept a great pace and received lovely recommendations for other parts of our travels. I did the all day tour, aka before and after lunch: loved it!!

tour by foot london

East End Graffiti and Street Art Tour- by Gregory Simpson Amazing tour! Greg provided an abundance of information covering the artist to the styles of graffiti and street art. Greg was very mindful of the group and our safety, while also respecting the neighborhoods. The waking tour was easy to keep up with and still take plenty of photographs. We were able to see and learn about different parts of London that I otherwise would have missed.
