Pacific Northwest Tours & Vacations

View of Arch Cape att sunset, with blue and purple sky and waves crashing, Oregon, USA

If you think the Pacific Northwest is all hiking, coffee and craft beer...

you'd be absolutely correct. But it's some of the best hiking, coffee and craft beer in North America . Encompassing Washington, Oregon and parts of Canada's British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest is known for its impressive glacier-laced mountain ranges, rugged coastlines, perpetually green forests and quirky cities. While the region does have a bit of a rainy reputation, you'll never be far from a hot cup of coffee; Seattle is the birthplace of Starbucks, after all. PNW locals cherish their outdoor activities, so lace up your hiking boots and grab your reusable mug... it's time to explore the best of the "Upper Left."

Pacific Northwest travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

What to pack for a trip to the Pacific Northwest

What to pack for the Pacific Northwest depends on what time of year you're travelling and what you're planning on doing. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for all destinations, and layers are always a good idea (even in the summertime) as the weather can change quickly in all seasons.

Hiking trips require proper trekking gear: a mixture of lightweight, quick-drying clothing, properly fitting hiking boots and sun protection. To avoid buying plastic, a water bottle or bladder/hose system to refill along the way is a must.

Before travelling, it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the ‘Packing’ section of the Essential Trip Information for the tour you’re interested in, especially if you're joining a   walking, hiking or trekking trip .

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

From luxury yachts and historic vessels to active expedition cruise ships, our large variety of Pacific Northwest trip accommodations carry from 8 to 100 guests at a time. Our expert staff will help find the perfect accommodation for your Pacific Northwest tour.

In Alaska she carries 11 guests while in the Pacific Northwest, she accommodates up to 12. Her original 1932 Washington Diesel engine is the only one like it in the world.

Purpose built to cruise coastal waters, shallow coves and fast-moving channels, the 100-guest National Geographic Quest is a luxurious and state-of-the-art expedition vessel designed for supreme comfort and enhanced wildlife viewing.

What Travelers Say About Their Pacific Northwest Tours

We never knew that the San Juan Islands could be so beautiful and hold so much adventure for this older couple. Everyone on the Wilderness Discoverer worked hard (but never showed it) to make sure we had an exciting and fulfilling time. Their patience and enthusiasm for their jobs made our trip so memorable.

From reception to disembarking attention to detail was evident in all events. I saw lots of teamwork and enthusiasm at all levels. Their wealth of knowledge was amazing. I think they had as much fun as we did. These are obviously top notch people who loved their work and did a wonderful job.

The cabins and ship, the staff, the Heritage speakers, the dining experience - all of this and more - was terrific! The chef was fantastic in her choices and flavors. Our cabin was well appointed and maintained perfectly. Lastly, our Adventure Specialist, Nick, was responsive, informative and very helpful every step of the way. The trip ran like clockwork from beginning to end.

The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides.

Exceeded expectations. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

As we experienced in our previous Uncruise trip to Alaska, the trip was well planned and well executed. We enjoyed the people we met while on the boat. I felt that every staff member we encountered was gracious and courteous making us all feel welcome and comfortable.

This traveler reviews her experience of a  San Juan Islands cruise that is no longer in operation. See all  UnCruise Cruises  for other options to travel aboard the Wilderness Discoverer.

Wow, we thought our UnCruise adventure last year to S.E. Alaska couldn't be topped, but this adventure came a very close 2nd! Our needs were met every single day and the crew made us feel so special, like offering and providing a private skiff tour around Cypress and "Mermaid" Island for just Jim and me when we missed the last skiff because of open kayaking. We continue to sing the praises of both UnCruise and Advenuturesmith Explorations! [We chose this trip and destination because] we have enjoyed our two previous Un-Cruises and we have family in the Seattle area, so we naturally look for adventures in the region that are within a short distance in the NW or Alaska. Every meal and adventure was made more fun because of our enthusiastic fellow travelers!

Accommodations Review

Could have used a few more hooks in the rooms for hand towels, clothes, etc. Our bathroom was usually foul smelling and could have used an air freshener...

Meals Review

BACON was da bomb! I loved the salmon, scallops and ribs; my husband liked the lamb and the raw oysters. Daily different special bar drinks were exciting and fun to look forward to! The only thing we could even possibly give less than 5 stars was that some of the fish dishes at dinner were less than exciting. The desserts were fantastic, though!

Crew & Guides Review

We loved our morning on Spencer off of Lopez Island... with the remnants of the morning fog it was a photographer's dream!

Itinerary Review

Without a doubt, I loved the moonlight kayaking around Lopez Island, a truly spiritual experience when we turned most of the lights out and became very quiet, just hearing the sound of our paddles churning up the bio-luminescent plankton in the water. I loved hiking in the rain and fog through The Staircase area of Olympic National Park. We also enjoyed the morning guided kayak trip in total fog around the Finger Islands around Sucia Island. We also liked the bus trip up Mt. Constitution, the picnic beside the lake as well as the short walk through the surrounding woods on Orcas Island- and so many other activities on this trip...as well as the comradery on the boat...we made so many new friends!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

AdventureSmith is always terrific and thorough. We have and will continue to [recommend AdventureSmith Explorations], in fact I just did so earlier today!

Traveler Advice

Pack for casual and exciting adventures. Don't expect luxurious quarters-just fun, fantastic food and lots of fun!

From reception to disembarking attention to detail was evident in all events. Understanding that you make many of these trips each year keeping this level so high is a true complement. We wanted a small ship that covered all possible segments of the area. You LOS filled that requirement. Made some good friends.

This was our fourth river trip and the first where we were able to visit the bridge at will. For me, the mechanics of running a boat this size requires a certain management level which obviously existed. I saw lots of teamwork and enthusiasm at all levels.

So maybe a hamburger can be offered at times but you are obviously are on a par with other trips that we have experienced. I would guess that the general client group had no idea how healthy your meals were. You failed miserably to add 10 pounds as requested. 5 was all I could muster. Portion sizes were excellent. No improvement necessary in this category.

Can't add anything other than great job at all levels. Their wealth of knowledge was amazing. I think they had as much fun as we did.

Hard to rate but [I enjoyed most] the Snake River Fast Boat excursion was tops and the Winery Tour was second. Why - Both took lots of people management skills and coordination. Included in all the excursions were the Heritage Guides and your Hotel Manager. These are obviously top notch people who loved their work and did a wonderful job.

Pre-trip information was adequate. We have already recommended AdventureSmith Explorations.

The Lewis and Clark theme was a great way to understand how our country grew. When we left the boat we traveled East cross country more or less on their route back to the Missouri. We uncovered new information that added to our base knowledge about Lewis and Clark. Made for an even more interesting experience. Read the book also.

  • Wilderness Legacy

This traveler reviews her experience of a Columbia and Snake River cruise that is no longer in operation. See all  UnCruise Cruises  for other options to travel aboard the Wilderness Legacy (renamed from the S.S. Legacy in 2020.)

We enjoyed every aspect of this trip. The cabins and ship, the staff, the Heritage speakers, the dining experience - all of this and more - was terrific! The trip through Hells Canyon was amazing. The jet boat was the perfect method to tour this spectacular vista. The "skipper" and his assistant were very helpful and informative. The two stops (lunch and the park ranger compound) were amazing to see and learn more about this area of the US. We chose to stay in the states for our vacation this year and we are so glad we did. Our daughters also visited the bridge as well as the engine room. Everybody kept busy yet relaxed at the same time. We were a smaller group of 44 travelers. At first we thought the average age might be older than we expected especially since our daughters joined us (ages 25 and 27). However, we were wrong. We felt the variety added to the experience! They felt welcomed and comfortable.

We ate everything placed in front of us! The chef was fantastic in her choices and flavors. It is amazing that all that food was prepared in a relatively small space. Kudos to the Chef and her team. Shannon, our server in the dining room, was spectacular also! With helpful tips at various locations as well as an extraordinary sense of the cuisine, Shannon made each meal-time a special time for us. No request went unfulfilled and nothing was ever a problem or concern. We felt all the wait staff were good but Shannon stood out and we wanted to pass this along.

Denise was our lead and had us well organized/informed on all the events ahead of us each day. Lilly and Jen were amazing in their knowledge and presentation of material. Each tour was handled so very well; we were most impressed with the whole team. Must add that it was, for us, the perfect balance of information and visits.

Our cabin was well appointed and maintained perfectly - we did not spend much time in our cabin but that was the point. However, we slept well and had everything we needed.

Transportation Review

The trip ran like clockwork from beginning to end.

Our Adventure Specialist, Nick, was responsive, informative and very helpful every step of the way. Thank you, Nick!

Prepare to have fun!

We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides. Wonderful group to travel with, made some good friends. We wanted to see Alaska’s coast, would hate to travel by large ship. The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. Ketchikan...after peace and solitude, was too congested.

Given tight quarters well done. Slow shower drain, leaving toilet area wet, not my favorite.

Variety, flavors, presentation wonderful.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of all guides added greatly to the trip.

Baggage and transfer handled smoothly. Over emphasis on the boots. Needed once and ankle high was plenty.

  • Inside Passage with Olympic National Park & 2 Days in Glacier Bay

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good.  Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods.  Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn?

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

This traveler reviews her experience of a Columbia and Snake River cruise that is no longer in operation. See all UnCruise Cruises for other options to travel aboard the Wilderness Legacy.

Our cabin on the Legacy was very comfortable and well maintained. I loved having the window view. The only comment I can think of to add would be that being able to adjust the temperature in the dining room and the lounge so that it was not so cold would have been welcome.

Skiba did a superb job organizing and communicating the activities of the day.  Julie was an informative and enthusiastic leader!  I learned so much from Ryan about the geology of the area.  it added much to our actual visits.  Keka (Ericka) is certainly a special guide.  She did an excellent job presenting the salmon information as well as her knowledge of other naturalist elements of the trip.  Alll of the leaders and guides that I experienced were skilled and attentive making us all feel comfortable regardless of the activity . Although the wine was not my major interest I thought Asher, as sommelier, did an excellent job of creating activities and sharing information for everyone.

I would suggest the twin bed arrangement for a couple for ease of movement in the cabin.

I had some dietary restrictions (GF) that were well handled at the meals. The chef , Marcus, frequently provided me with chicken soup when I needed it. And Julie, the pastry chef, made wonderful gluten free bread that I enjoyed at almost every meal. This was facilitated by our server, Quinn. They made the extra efforts to meet my individual needs, not an easy task when you are serving a large group. Kudos to the food staff.

[I most enjoyed] The visit to Palouse State Park, the hike at the Dalles, the Maryhill Museum of Art, viewing the dams and locks from the boat, and Fort Clatsop. [I least enjoyed] The Stonehenge replica - not as interesting as a replica. Would have spent more time at the Maryhill Museum.

I felt I had the information I needed to plan for the trip. They arranged for us to be taken to the airport to pick up a rental car following our disembarking. I felt that Leslie was easy available for any questions we might have. I think the materials provided really give an accurate picture of the trip.

Cape Flattery - What To Pack For The PNW

What To Pack For A Trip To The Pacific Northwest

What do people wear in the Pacific Northwest ? As a traveler to the PNW, you may desire to blend in, or at least not stick out! One way to do that is to brush up on what the locals wear. We’re here for that.

Each region of the Pacific Northwest has its own unique climate, but there are a few things you should be packing for the PNW that span all areas. They mostly cover rain gear, but keep reading as we will dive deeper into specific packing items below!

Want a downloadable/printable list? Read our Complete Pacific Northwest Packing List Post Here!

A Sturdy Raincoat. If there ever was an iconic piece of Pacific Northwest clothing, it’s the rain jacket . You’ll very likely wear this piece every day, so make sure your raincoat is something you absolutely love! We’re huge fans of Stutterheim and although they are a bit pricey, they are virtually impenetrable to the rain! We choose to invest in a super well-built rain jacket because we live here, but do what’s best for you!

Hiking Pants. In order to really enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, we encourage you to plan a least a few PNW hikes during your first time in the Pacific Northwest. Choose a pair of hiking pants that are stretchy and comfortable. Pockets are a super great bonus – we love these ones from Fjallraven !

Thermal Layers. Many months out of the year, the Pacific Northwest can be cold and wet. To best keep warm and dry on your Pacific Northwest activities, we suggest that you follow the three-layer rule: Sweat-wicking inner layer , thermal mid-layer , and then waterproof outer-layer . For more information on how to layer clothes properly, read here !

Waterproof Boots. When hiking in the Pacific Northwest , packing waterproof boots is always a good idea. Look for materials labeled “Gore-tex” for some solid waterproof boots ! Right now, we are loving the Vasque St Elias GTX series boots and they’ve been awesome!

Birkenstocks and Tevas. It’s everyday fashion at its most casual and comfortable. It’s also a common occurrence to see people rocking their Teva sandals or Birkenstocks with socks here in the PNW. Yes, you heard us right – dad fashion is IN in the Pacific Northwest!

No matter what, when you plan a trip to the Pacific Northwest – always pack a rain jacket.

Accessories

Gaiters. Gaiters are barriers that strap around your boots and the bottom of your pants that protect you from rain and snow.

Dry Bag. Depending on the type of activities you want to do, a dry bag is important for keeping gear from the elements! It’s especially important if you’re looking to take a canoe or kayak out on the water. We like this one by Sea To Summit !

Water Bottle. Yes, it rains here, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get thirsty on those epic Washington hikes or trails to waterfalls in Oregon .

Beanie. Used for function AND style, beanies are nearly always worn in the Pacific Northwest. Bonus points if your beanie matches with your outfit!

Waterproof Backpack. In order to keep your things dry on those epic hikes in the Pacific Northwest , choose a backpack that easily sheds water, or is made of waterproof material.

The Pacific Northwest should be on your radar for a number of reasons. Within the region, you have access to mountains, forests, and coastline along with unique and vibrant cities. The PNW generally includes Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. However, for your 5 to 7-day Pacific Northwest itinerary, we’re going to look specifically at Washington and Oregon.

Should you have more time to spend in the area, extend your trip to visit Idaho and BC. We’ll include a combination of urban and natural areas, as well as destinations that are a bit more off the beaten path.

Table of Contents

Best Time to Visit the Pacific Northwest

The best time to visit the PNW is in the summer. Summers tend to be mild–they are warm and comfortable. During this time of year, you can plan to pack sandals, shorts, and a light jacket. Always have a rain jacket on hand as the PNW is known for brief and sudden downpours before returning to beautiful blue skies.

Keep in mind that a visit in August or September might force you to travel around wildfires. Eastern and central Washington and Oregon experience their highest number of wildfires during these months, so it might be the case that some trails or forest areas are off-limits to visitors.

Summer may be the best time to visit, but you can still visit during other months. Visiting national parks or state forests during the fall provides the opportunity to witness the stunning changing of the leaves.

In October, it’s usually still warm enough to camp and you can enjoy the orange and yellow leaves. The winter months in Washington and Oregon are cold and wet, but if you enjoy winter sports, consider paying a visit to the PNW during this time.

There are several ski resorts as well as opportunities for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.

As a general rule of thumb, never visit the PNW without a rain jacket or umbrella. The area is known for being flush with green all year round, but this is only possible due to large amounts of rain. Make sure you pack carefully for whichever season you plan to visit.

The Oregon Coast is a highlight of the Pacific Northwest

5 to 7-Day Pacific Northwest Itinerary

If you’re lucky enough to have a full 7 days to spend in the PNW, take this itinerary to guide your travels. We also have options for a 5-day itinerary that will take you to some of the PNW’s best places.

If you need to rent a car for this trip, then you can browse Rentalcars.com which aggregates prices across a number of companies. Alternatively, you can also consider renting an RV or a campervan from Outdoorsy.

Day 1 – Seattle, Washington

Beginning your travels in Seattle, Washington is the perfect way to kick off your itinerary. You can visit the city in one day, but it’s ideal if you can spare more than that.

Seattle is most well known for the Space Needle, museums, and Pike’s Place Market, where you’ll find delicious seafood, outstanding views of Puget Sound, and the original Starbucks coffee.

The Chihuly is a blown glass museum that tends to be a fan favorite. You must also make sure to pay the famous gum wall at Pike’s Place a visit.

Spending a day in Seattle can give you a great taste for the city before continuing onto the rest of your PNW itinerary.

Where to Stay in Seattle

The Mediterranean Inn – Situated within walking distance of the iconic Space Needle, this hotel is a great option for staying in Seattle. You can choose from a range of rooms including some with self-catering facilities and there is a 24-hour reception.

Inn at the Market  – Located close to the iconic Pike Place Market, this boutique hotel is a great option if you’re not worried about your budget. There are a range of comfortable rooms to choose from and a great rooftop bar with spectacular views of Seattle.

Seattle's Iconic Skyline

Day 2 – Olympic National Park & Rialto Beach

For day two, head northwest toward Olympic National Park . If you sat on the waterfront in Seattle and looked west, you most likely saw a mountain range–this is Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic peninsula. Here you’ll find forests, mountains, and beaches to explore.

At the furthest tip of the peninsula is the stunning Cape Flattery. There’s a road that goes around the outskirts of the park, but you should make sure to venture into the mountains and rainforests, namely the Hoh Rainforest.

One of the most popular areas of the Olympics is Rialto Beach. It’s near La Push, made famous because of the Twilight movies filmed there. Rialto is unique for its stacks of driftwood and ecosystems, a combination of beach and coastal forest.

If your itinerary allows, try to visit during sunset. On a clear summer evening, set up a blanket and watch the gorgeous sunset over the ocean. Those who aren’t interested in Olympic NP, consider staying inland and spending this day in Mount Rainier National Park , instead.

Hall of Mosses in Olympic National Park

Where to Stay Near Olympic National Park

Olympic Lodge – Located in Port Angeles, this is one of the top options if you’d prefer a luxury accommodation to come back to after exploring the National Park. They have a number of great rooms and great facilities such as a swimming pool and a restaurant on site.

Beautiful Rialto Beach

Day 3 – Oregon Coast

The cute and quaint coastal town of Astoria is a favorite getaway for a quiet weekend — it is actually the oldest city in Oregon, founded in 1811.

The Astoria Column is one of the most famous sites. It sits atop a hill overlooking the town. The column is covered in historical depictions of the region. For another look into local history, stop at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.

The Columbia River divides Washington from Oregon and was a critical part of the area’s economy many years ago. The museum details local fishing, shipping, and military history.

No road trip through the PNW is complete without exploring the coast, so make sure to pay Cannon Beach a visit on your way to Portland . Cannon Beach is home to Haystack Rock, one of the most iconic sites along the coast. Take a hike through Ecola State Park or visit Arch Cape.

These are areas that will get you away from the crowds as Cannon Beach does tend to see a lot of visitors, especially during the summer months. Make sure to try local seafood to round out your Oregon coast visit .

Plan to spend your third day driving down the coast to Portland, where you’ll spend your next two nights. As another major tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest, there are countless places to rest your head in this hip city.

Beautiful coastline in Ecola State Park

Where to Stay in Portland

The Society Hotel – Centrally located close to all the major attractions of the city, this hotel is a perfect mid-range option. There are several rooms to choose from and there is also a restaurant and bar on site.

Kimpton Riverplace Hotel – If you’d prefer luxury accommodation during your stay in Portland then this hotel is a fantastic option. Located on the banks of the Willamette River, they offer a range of luxe rooms with all the amenities you would expect.

Private Rental — If you would rather have a bit of privacy and be able to cook your own meals, then a private apartment might be a good option for you. There are a number of great properties to choose from, like this quaint, centrally located cottage .

Day 4 – Portland, Oregon

Portland is the other main city in the Pacific Northwest and well worth a visit. Though spending two days in Portland is probably most ideal, you can still cover quite a bit of ground in just one day, as well.

The city’s mantra “keep Portland weird” rings true as you explore everything the city has to offer. Food and hikes are local favorites. There are neighborhoods throughout Portland that have the best food and nightlife, so make sure you research them before choosing where to spend your time.

Powell’s bookstore, Pittock Mansion, the Japanese Gardens, and more are excellent ways to spend a day. If you’re looking for a quiet way to spend an afternoon, consider a picnic in Laurelhurst Park.

Portland comes alive at night!

Day 5 – Mt. Hood & Bend

If you drive just east of Portland, you’ll quickly arrive at Mt. Hood National Forest. You most likely saw Mt. Hood from Portland if it was a clear day, you might’ve also caught a glimpse of Mount St. Helens. Mt. Hood National Forest is filled with hikes of varying difficulty and camping.

The historic Timberline Lodge is worth a visit even if you’re not staying the night. Take a short hike to Trillium Lake or tackle a more strenuous hike up the side of the mountain. During the winter, Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline are two popular ski areas.

Bend, Oregon is a great place to stop, refuel, and restock your snacks while exploring a central Oregon city – and there are also plenty of places to explore when driving from Portland to Bend .

Bend is known for its breweries, so take your pick and have lunch at one. The Deschutes River runs through the city and offers a much-needed relief from the heat during the summer.

During winter, Mt. Bachelor is a favored spot for outdoor activities. During your time in Bend, you can choose to stick to the city shops and restaurants or venture out to Pilot Butte or Smith Rock State Park for some time outside.

You also could use this day to explore the highlights along the Columbia River Gorge, including the beautiful Multnomah Falls.

Driving towards Mount Hood

Where to Stay in Bend

Hampton Inn & Suites – If you’re after a basic clean hotel, then this is certainly a great option. Offering a range of different rooms in a central location, they have breakfast included daily and a hot tub and fitness centre for guests to use.

Oxford Hotel – This locally run and eco-friendly boutique hotel is an excellent option for spending the night in Bend. They offer several different types of rooms in a central location with great facilities. A superb breakfast is available each morning.

Private Rental – If you value your privacy and would rather stay in a private rental in Bend than a hotel, then are several options such as this historic home in central Bend .

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more hotels in Bend!

City of Bend with Mt Hood in the background

Day 6 – John Day Fossil Beds, Painted Hills & Umpqua National Forest

The John Day Fossil Beds are filled with striped hills and ancient remnants of many years ago. These colorful rock formations capture the history of the region. It’s one of the richest fossil beds in North America and a fun spot to visit for those traveling with small children.

Sit at an outlook to enjoy the view or tie up your hiking shoes to take a walk through these rolling hills. You can learn how creatures that once walked the earth here as well as climate changes while you explore.

The Painted Hills and John Day Fossil Beds go hand-in-hand. Oregon’s Painted Hills are one of three units of John Day and perhaps one of the most recognizable. It’s hard to miss the towering hills striped with reds, browns, and yellows–colors that look like they’ve been painted on.

In total, the area is 3,132 acres, giving you ample space to explore and step away from the crowds if you desire. The Painted Hills are listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon, so maybe you want to challenge yourself to visit as many wonders as possible during your trip.

Next, head to the Umpqua National Forest. Within the forest, you’ll find waterfalls — we recommend paying Toketee Falls a visit, and several trails.

The forest covers 983,126 acres across three southern Oregon counties. Camping here during the summer is highly recommended.

There are several campgrounds that you can book in advance as well as many that are first come first serve, so they can better fit in your Pacific Northwest road trip itinerary. Take a break from the crowds and cities by spending a day exploring Umpqua National Forest.

Day 7 – Umpqua Hot Springs & Crater Lake National Park

Seated in the Umpqua National Forest are the river’s hot springs. Visitors park in a designated parking lot before hiking a short and steep hike to the pools. Each pool is about the size of an average adult, making them ideal for lounging.

They are carved into the side of a hill and the stone around the pools do tend to get slippery, so make sure you wear proper shoes and remain cautious of where you’re stepping. The crowds at the pools tend to be a hit or miss. A weekend day usually draws more crowds than a midweek visit, so try to build your itinerary according to your preferences.

The Umpqua Hot Springs provide a nice place to rest and relax toward the end of your PNW road trip.

Finally, it’s time to head to Crater Lake . As the only national park in Oregon, Crater Lake is a must-see during your road trip through the Pacific Northwest. Nearly 8,000 years old, a volcanic explosion rocked the area. The result was a 6,173-foot lake filled with crystal clear water that makes it appear a vibrant blue.

It’s worth visiting the park any time of year, but winters bring intense snowpack that may close roads and summer risks wildfires that can close the park. However, on a clear summer day, Crater Lake is unlike any place you’ve visited before.

Beautiful Crater Lake

Have More Time?

We highly recommend venturing into Idaho and western Montana, or even into British Columbia – in fact, there are plenty of place to visit on the drive from Seattle to Vancouver .

If you have more time, try spending an extra day or two in the national parks and cities like Portland or Seattle . There is a lot to see during your 7-day Pacific Northwest road trip, so be sure to plan a trip that works for the speed you want to travel at.

Take a look at a few highlights to add to your itinerary should you have some time to spare.

Yamhill-Carlton

Here is a recommendation for those who enjoy wine tasting. The Yamhill-Carlton area is a rising player in the wine industry. Wineries here are specifically known for their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

Spend a day exploring a few local wineries and enjoying the lush green rolling hills of Yamhill-Carlton. There are also several wine festivals throughout the summer that are worth the visit if your itinerary aligns.

The Enchantments

If you’re looking for a challenging hike to round out your time in the PNW, look no further than the Enchantments. You can get permits to camp at the top of the pass, but they are highly competitive. Many people opt to thru-hike the area.

If you’re not interested in a 20-mile day hike with substantial elevation gain, you can hike up to Colchuck Lake to take in the bright blue water and snowy peaks. It’s the most picturesque section of the hike and a favorite by those who make the trek up to see.

North Cascades National Park

“The North Cascades are calling!” Located just north of Leavenworth are the North Cascades . These impressive mountains are loaded with hikes and vantage points that welcome visitors wholeheartedly.

With more than 3,000 glaciers, bright blue lakes, and snow-kissed peaks, these mountains are well worth the visit. Make sure to explore which hikes you’re interested in doing prior to arrival as some require permits.

The North Cascades are paradise for backcountry hikers. Winter severely limits which parts of the park you can access, so visiting during summer is recommended. Early summer avoids the late summer heat waves and there’s still some snow on the mountains.

Stunning North Cascades National Park

Whether you have five days, seven days, or more, the Pacific Northwest has a little something for everyone. With so much natural space to explore, unique cities, and geological wonders, it’s hard to decide what to visit first.

Use this route to guide your road trip decisions, but remember to create a trip that caters to your interests and you’re certain to have an unforgettable Pacific Northwest itinerary.

46 Bucket List-Worthy Things To Do In The Pacific Northwest

I t’s no secret that the Pacific Northwest (PNW) is home to some of the most awe-inspiring views and adventures in the entire world. I’m so grateful I get to live in this corner of the world and have had the opportunity to explore so many PNW gems. I’m super excited to share this list of bucket list-worthy things to do in the Pacific Northwest . Happy exploring!

What’s Considered the Pacific Northwest?

There’s always a bit of friendly controversy over what exactly is the “Pacific Northwest”. Depending on who you ask, the region includes slightly different states. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho are almost always included, but sometimes Montana, Alaska, Wyoming, British Columbia make the cut.

If you look at the big picture, the Pacific Northwest is located in the northwest corner of the United States with the Pacific Ocean to its west and the Rocky Mountains to it’s east.

For the purpose of this article, we will be including bucket list things to do in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska and (my personal favorite) British Columbia.

Things to do in the Pacific Northwest (Washington)

We are kicking off this Pacific Northwest bucket list in the great state of Washington. Washington is home to 3 National Parks and over 140 beautiful state parks, so there are plenty of outdoor adventures to be had.

Hike in Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park offers an unparalleled hiking experience for adventurers and some of the best views I’ve ever seen. Spanning nearly 1 million acres, this diverse landscape has something to offer everyone. From the rugged Pacific coastline to the temperate rainforests and the majestic peaks of the Olympic Mountains, you’ll be left in awe the entire time.

Hikers can explore over 611 miles of trails, each offering unique vistas and challenges. A highlight is the Hoh Rain Forest, one of the largest temperate rainforests in the U.S. For those seeking breathtaking panoramic views, the Mount Storm King hike is a must, offering stunning vistas of the park’s mountain range and Lake Crescent.

Day Trip to the San Juan Islands

If you find yourself in Anacortes or Seattle, a day trip to the San Juan Islands will surely be a highlight of your time in the PNW. Comprising over 170 islands and reefs, the San Juan Islands are a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers, with opportunities to spot orcas, seals, and a myriad of bird species.

From either of the above cities, you can hop on a ferry and choose one island to explore. I recommend choosing between Lopez, San Juan, or Orcas island for first-time visitors. Then, spend the day chasing waterfalls, shopping at quaint farmers markets, whale watching, or simply basking in the slow paced island lifestyle.

Explore Mount Rainier National Park

No trip to Washington is complete without a stop at Mount Rainier National Park. This national park is home to the highest volcanic peak (Mount Rainier) in the contiguous US. It’s a must on any Pacific Northwest bucket list.

During your time at the park, make sure to check out Myrtle Falls, Reflection Lake, and Nerada Falls. For those who are up for more of an adventure, conquer the Skyline Loop for some of the beautiful scenery in the park.

Shop at Pike Place Market

If you are looking for a more relaxing, yet still bucket-list-worthy adventure in the Pacific Northwest, head to the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle. This massive market spans over 9 acres and is the perfect spot to spend a few hours.

During my trip to Seattle , I enjoyed trying unique foods, buying fresh flowers, and people watching here. It’s also close to the Seattle Great Wheel and the infamous gum wall so you could easily spend an entire day exploring.

Sleep in a Treehouse

After adventuring all around Washington, how cool would it be to spend a night in a treehouse?! Treehouse Point is a picturesque treehouse just 30 minutes from Seattle. I’ve stayed in a lot of pretty cool places, but this one consistently comes out on top!

There are 7 rentable treehouses all with unique amenities and peaceful views. If spending a night isn’t in the budget, you can visit the property via a guided daytime tour!

Picnic at Palouse Falls State Park

As mentioned previously, Washington state is home to over 140 state parks. Although each one is worthy of visiting, there’s no way I can fit them all on this list.

Palouse Falls State Park stands out as it offers a unique and diverse landscape and a 200 ft (very accessible) waterfall. It’s the perfect place for a relaxing picnic with a view!

Check out Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

If you were left wanting more after a trip to Mount Rainier, make sure to add a visit to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument to the list! It’s the 6th largest volcano in the state and it’s unfortunately known for having the deadliest eruption in 1980.

While visiting this park, you can enjoy a hike or scenic drive. If you are an experienced hiker, you can even make the trek to the top. It’s a difficult, yet non-technical climb, but you will need a permit to do so.

Stroll through the Charming Streets of Leavenworth

Leavenworth is nestled in central Washington about 2 hours from Seattle. It’s one of the most (if not THE most) charming city in all of the United States. It’s a Bavarian-styled village surrounded by picturesque mountains.

It’s best known for its magical Christmas decorations and festivities, but is a great destination no matter the time of year. Highlights include visiting the Nutcracker Museum, the Reindeer Farm, and simply enjoying the outdoor parks and quaint downtown.

Visit North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park is another breathtaking and bucket-list worthy park in the Pacific Northwest. From camping to boating to hiking the adventures here are endless.

For a truly memorable experience, secure a backcountry permit for a night of solitude and unforgettable sunsets and sunrises.

Swim in Lake Chelan

Lake Chelan, located in North-Central Washington State, is a stunning, 50-mile-long glacially formed lake renowned for its crystal-clear waters and scenic beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains, rolling vineyards, and lush orchards, Lake Chelan offers an excellent getaway year-round.

After spending time swimming, boating, or relaxing on the shores, make sure to save time to check out the wineries and the small town charm.

Take a Hike to Snoqualmie Falls

There’s no shortage of waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. Snoqualmie Falls is a great stop as it’s only 30 minutes from Seattle, but you will feel a world away. Visitors can reach the falls via a short 1.4-mile hike. If you are feeling up to it, I definitely recommend making the trek to the bottom of the falls. It’s 100 percent worth the incline on the way up! This was a highlight from when I visited Seattle!

Things to do in the PNW (Oregon)

Located directly south of Washington, Oregon is known for it’s waterfalls, hot springs, natural beauty and even a wine region. Here are the best things to do in Oregon!

Chase Waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park

I’m not sure I’ll ever find a more magical state park than Silver Falls State Park. The highlight of this park is hiking the famous Trail of Ten Falls trail. It’s a 7.2 mile loop that will bring you past 10 epic waterfalls. It’ll be hard to beat the experience of walking behind the powerful South Falls. It’s a true gem in the Columbia River Gorge.

Beach Day at Cannon Beach

This wouldn’t be a true Oregon bucket list without a stop at Cannon Beach. It’s one of the best things to do in the entire Pacific Northwest. In addition to marveling at the 235 foot haystack rock, beach goers also enjoy whale watching from the shore, the nearby hiking trails, and the small beach town charm.

Cannon Beach is also an excellent PNW stop if traveling with your furry best friend as the entire beach and most nearby trails are dog-friendly! There are also many dog-friendly stays nearby. Just be sure to do your research beforehand to ensure a positive dog-friendly stay!

Surf at Cape Kiwanda Beach

Just 70 miles down the coast from Cannon beach, you’ll find another Oregon gem, Cape Kiwanda Beach and Natural Area. If you are brave enough to hop in the frigid waters, it’s a great place to surf. There are several rental shops in the area that offer boards, wetsuits, and lessons.

During my Cape Kiwanda road trip , I also enjoyed checking out the area’s trails, having a beach bonfire, and simply taking in the views.

Marvel at Crater Lake

Nestled in south-central Oregon, Crater Lake National Park needs to be on your bucket list. It’s quite the trek from Portland (5 hours), but worth the road trip.

The lake is one of the deepest, bluest, and clearest lakes in the entire world, so it’s a sight to see in itself. However, I recommend exploring further into the park by heading out on any of the park’s 23 hiking trails.

Summer is the best time to visit this park as all of the trails start at over 4,000 feet and are therefore covered with snow and closed during the winter and spring months.

Go Wine Tasting in the Willamette Valley

Calling all wine lovers! Did you know that Oregon is home to one of the best wine regions in all of the United States?!

Willamette Valley stretches over 150 miles from Portland to Eugene. Throughout the region, you’ll find over 700 wineries. Yep, 700!! The valley is divided into 4 regions, but if you have the time it would be worth it to fully explore each.

In addition to wine tasting and touring vineyards, you’ll also find a plethora of outdoor activities, quaint shops, and vibrant events.

Visit Multnomah Falls

I’m sure you have seen pictures of this magical waterfall all over the internet and social media, but it’s 100 percent worth seeing in person. Multnomah Falls is a popular spot on any Oregon Road Trip so be prepared to share the view.

It’s just 30 minutes from Portland which makes it an extremely easy day trip. However, I recommend continuing on highway 84 (through the Columbia River Gorge) as there are countless waterfalls just waiting to be explored.

Take a Candlelit Cave Tour

If you are looking for unique things to do in the Pacific Northwest for the whole family, make sure to add Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve to the list.

There are 3 different caving tours to choose from ranging form a family-friendly walking tour to a off-trail caving tour where you’ll find yourself crawling and squeezing through the cave. I’m a bit too claustrophobic for the adventure tour, but the candlelit tour was right up my alley!

Marvel at the Coast at Boardman State Park

Boardman State Park in Oregon is a coastal treasure, often regarded as a hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a must on your Oregon road trip PNW bucket list!

This scenic park stretches along 12 miles of rugged coastline, offering visitors a dramatic landscape of cliffs, sea stacks, and sandy beaches. Two of the park’s most photographed spots are from the Arch Rock and the Natural Bridge viewpoints. Both feature a series of stunning rock formations carved by the relentless Pacific waves.

After testing out your photography skills, be sure to save time to explore the 18 miles of trails that wind through the park. Each trail offers unique and breathtaking views. You might even find a hidden cove!

Soak in Umpqua Hot Springs

If you find yourself in south-central Oregon, a soak in the Umpqua Hot Springs is a great way to relax after any hike or outdoor adventure! These natural hot springs are located just 31 miles Crater Lake National Park (also mentioned on this Pacific Northwest bucket list).

The springs can be reached via a quick .8-mile round trip trail. I do recommend arriving bright and early as the parking lot is extremely small (about 10 cars). Be sure to bring cash to pay the $5 fee!

It’s also important to note that the springs are open year-round, but the road does close in the wintertime so this will add an additional 2.5 mile hike or snowshoe to the springs!

Explore the Painted Hills

Not to be confused with Mars, a trip to the Oregon Painted Hills is one of the most unique things to do in the Pacific Northwest. Nestled within the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, the Painted Hills are an awe-inspiring sight.

Best known for the varied stripes of red, tan, orange, and black, visitors can hike, take a scenic drive, or practice their photography skills.

Pro tip: Visit in the late afternoon for the best pictures as the light typically hits the hills just right.

Things to do in the Pacific Northwest (Idaho)

In my opinion, Idaho is one of the most underrated states in all the the USA. It’s nestled on the eastern borders of Washington and Oregon and is home to the most usable natural hot springs. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Go Horseback Riding

Book a stay at Western Pleasure Ranch for an unforgettable vacation! It’s an all-inclusive ranch (consistently voted the #1 Western Ranch in America) where you will be met with a cozy stay, daily horseback riding, and 3 gourmet meals a day.

Go Mountain Biking

With over 12,000 miles of mountain biking trails, Idaho is a haven for mountain bike enthusiasts. You can choose from the foothills of Boise or tackle the 7 sky-high trestles along The Route of the Hiawatha.

If you are feeling extra adventurous, plan to bike the part of the 500-mile hot springs trail where you could pass up to 50 different hot springs.

Try Rock Climbing

For fans of adrenaline, rock climbing in Idaho is a must. Head to the famous “City of Rocks” to experience some of Idaho’s best rock climbing terrain. It’s about 3 hours from both Salt Lake City and Boise which makes for an excellent climbing weekend trip.

Beginners can book and Introduction to Rock Climbing class, while experts can tackle the Crack of Doom at the Morning Glory Spire.

Visit the Moon

Okay, not the actual moon, HOWEVER Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve will make you feel as though you have landed on the moon.

Spanning approximately 53,571 acres, this surreal landscape was formed by volcanic eruptions over the past 15,000 years.

Visitors can explore the monument through a loop drive, offering access to various trails and scenic viewpoints. Hiking through caves formed by ancient lava tubes is a highlight, but be sure to secure a free cave permit from the Visitor’s Center before exploring!

Take a Hot Springs Road Trip

As I stated previously, Idaho is home to the most usable natural hot springs in the USA. Which makes it an excellent state for a hot springs road trip! During your road trip, you can choose from the more than 130 soak-able hot springs.

From the famous hot spring at Boat Box to the scenic Goldbug Hot Springs, the options are truly endless! Plan this trip in the winter months for a truly magical experience!

Things to do in the Pacific Northwest (Montana)

Montana, affectionately known as the “Big Sky Country,” is a land of breathtaking landscapes and boundless adventure. From the majestic peaks of Glacier National Park to the sprawling prairies and the roaring rivers, this state offers a backdrop for an array of adventurous activities.

Drive the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park

In my personal opinion, this scenic drive deserves all the accolades. The Going to the Sun Road is a 51-mile paved road that weaves through the heart of the park. Throughout the drive you’ll see waterfalls, valleys, alpine meadows, and glacier-carved peaks.

Get an early start as the drive will likely take you at least 4-5 hours to fully take in the beauty. This will also increase your chances of spotting wildlife. Trust me, you’ll likely want even more time!

Dip your toes in Lake McDonald

Also located in Glacier National Park, Lake McDonald is the park’s largest lake. It stretches over 10 miles long and reaches near 500 feet deep. If you are brave enough, it could be the most scenic polar plunge of your life! Or, if you’d prefer to stay dry, you can simply enjoy the views with a picnic on the shores!

Go Boating on Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake is the ultimate playground for water-enthusiasts. With over 185-miles of shoreline and 200 square miles of water, the options here are endless. From hiking, to boating, to camping you could create an entire PNW vacation on Flathead Lake!

Things to do in the Pacific Northwest (Wyoming)

Drum roll please… Wyoming is where the Wild West meets the most amazing natural beauty. Home to some of the most iconic natural wonders (looking at you Yellowstone), it’s a must stop on any Pacific Northwest bucket list.

Road Trip through Yellowstone

Yellowstone needs little introduction. It’s a true natural wonderland and a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of the Pacific Northwest. As the first national park in the world, established in 1872, Yellowstone is famous for its geothermal features, including the iconic Old Faithful geyser and the vibrant Grand Prismatic Spring.

During your Yellowstone road trip, you’ll likely spot bison, elk, and maybe even a grizzly bear! There are plenty of worth-while stops along the way that will leave you breathless!

Ride the Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle

Nestled within the amazing Grand Teton National Park, Jenny Lake deserves a spot on this things to do in the Pacific Northwest list. It’s known for its crystal clear (yet chilly) water and the snow-capped mountains along its perimeter.

While at the lake, visitors should take advantage of the boat shuttle to see the lake from the water and reach the other side. After deboarding, hikers can keep exploring all the way to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point.

Watch the Jackson Hole Town Square Shootout

If you need a break from all the active and adventurous things to do on this Pacific Northwest Bucket List, a trip to Jackson Hole is a must! It’s the cutest little town full of boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and luxurious hotels.

Every summer night (from Memorial Day to Labor Day) thousands of tourist gather on the town square to watch the famous wild west shootout. This 65-year tradition is a great way to indulge in the town’s history and culture.

Photograph Mormon Row

Mormon Row is a photographers dream! This historic area, with its iconic barns set against the dramatic backdrop of the Teton Range, is one of the most photographed locations in the United States.

The Moulton Barns offer a picturesque blend of rustic architecture and natural beauty. I am sure you have seen these iconic barns on social media, art galleries, or as artwork in homes!

The best times for photography are during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset when the soft, warm light accentuates the grandeur of the mountains and casts a magical glow over the landscape.

Things to do In The Pacific Northwest (British Columbia)

My personal favorite…British Columbia. I’m fortunate enough to live in this corner of the Pacific Northwest and I am always met with so many amazing bucket list adventures. Although it’s hard to fit all the best things to do in the Pacific Northwest on this list, I’m excited to share my most favorite BC adventures.

Take a Hike

There are countless amazing hikes in the Vancouver area . You could surely spend an entire summer exploring and still not even scratch the surface. From polar plunges in alpine lakes to epic panoramic views, each hike leads to its own adventures.

My favorite hike for sunrise or set is Mt. Cheam. It’s a strenuous hike, but you’ll be rewarded with the most magical 360-degree view of Chilliwack and the surrounding valley. If you are wanting an longer hike with an alpine lake as a reward, head to Iceberg Lake. It’s just over 15 km, but 100 percent worth it for the sparkling blue water at the end!

Take the Inside Passage Ferry to Prince Rupert

This past summer I had the opportunity to check out the Inside Passage Ferry from Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert. This 16 hour journey was filled with some amazing views, wildlife spotting’s, and amazing memories. Trust me when I say it isn’t your average ferry ride!

After arriving in Prince Rupert , you are then free to deboard and explore this rugged British Columbia gem. I especially enjoyed learning about Prince Rupert’s salmon canning industry, strolling through quaint art galleries, and soaking in the Frizzell Hot Springs!

Scuba Dive at God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park

For those with their scuba certificate, you need to add God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park to the list! It’s a definite North Vancouver Island bucket list item and one of the most unique things to do in the Pacific Northwest.

God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park is known as one of the very best cold water scuba destinations in the world. However, conditions are known to be a bit difficult, so it’s best for experienced divers only.

If diving isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the park via sea kayaking or fishing!

Soak in Hot Springs in Harrison Valley

Book a room at the Harrison Hot Springs resort for a weekend of relaxation! The resort is home to 5 different mineral pools and a variety of spa services.

However, if you are looking for a bit more adventure, there are many other things to do in Harrison River Valley! From kayaking to a floating waterpark, Harrison River Valley is a must stop on any adventure-lovers PNW list.

Rent Bikes in Victoria

Victoria is nestled on the southern end of Vancouver Island. This charming city is known for its Victorian architecture, beautiful gardens, natural beauty, and the plethora of outdoor activities.

After arriving, head to The Pedaler to grab some rental bikes. In my opinion, it’s the best way to explore the city! You can choose to explore the city on your own, or join a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide!

Ride the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, BC

The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish is a cable car that takes you through the Squamish Valley where you will be met with 360 degree views of the coastal mountain range below. The ride itself is just 10-minutes, however, this is just a part of the adventure.

Once on top, you can walk across the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, explore the trails, or simply take in the views from the viewing platforms.

Search for the Spirit Bear in the Great Bear Rainforest

The Great Bear Rainforest is located along the central and northern coast of British Columbia and is home to hundreds of miles of unspoiled wilderness. It’s actually one of the world’s largest remaining tracts of temperate rainforest and the only place where you might spot the famous rare white Kermode Bear (otherwise known as the “Spirit Bear”).

From hiking to kayaking, the options here are plentiful and unforgettable. Prince Rupert is an excellent home base for this adventure!

Chase Waterfalls in Wells Grey Provincial Park

Wells Grey Provincial Park is a true hidden gem in British Columbia. Covering over 5,000 square kilometers, this park is often referred to as the “Waterfall Park” due to its abundance of waterfalls, including the spectacular Helmcken Falls, one of Canada’s highest at 141 meters.

Other activities include swimming, camping, canoeing, and fishing.

Road trip through the Kootenay Rockies

Sometimes overshadowed by the neighboring Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National Park are 100 percent worth a visit. These two parks are nestled in southeastern BC and are less than 1 hour away from each other. It would make for one epic road trip like the one I did through Banff and Lake Louise !

Both parks are home to some of the most spectacular views in all of North America. Make sure to give yourself enough time in each park to fully appreciate each lake, viewpoint, and hike!

Bonus! Things to do in the PNW (Alaska)

Although not always considered the “Pacific Northwest” by all, Alaska still borders the Pacific Ocean and has so many amazing things to do. Below you’ll find the best things to do on the coast of Alaska!

Go Whale Watching

The entire coast of the Pacific Northwest is great for whale watching, however, Alaska stands out as the best. During my trip to Seward , I was fortunate enough to spot so many humpback whales and other sea life!

Be sure to plan your whale-watching vacation between May-August and then book a Kenai Fjords National Park and Resurrection Bay cruise. You will surely be left in awe of these magnificent creatures.

And, even if you do not spot any whales, the views of the Kenai Fjords are worth it alone!

Snorkel in Ketchikan

Did you know you can go snorkeling in Alaska?! A definite bucket-list item for any adventure-lover. Don’t worry, you’ll be given a full wet suit to conquer the chilly water.

Although it’s different than tropical snorkeling, you’ll still be able to spot colorful fish and other sea creatures. And, maybe you’ll get lucky and spot a whale in the distance!

Take a Helicopter Ride with Glacier Landing

One of the coolest things to do in the Pacific Northwest is to embark on a scenic helicopter ride. Skagway, AK is the perfect place for this!

You’ll be met with jaw dropping views of never-ending mountains and most tours include the opportunity to land right on a glacier. It’s truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Take a Rafting Trip to the Mendenhall Glacier

Departing from Juneau, this 3.5 hour tour takes you down the river on class II and III rapids for a front-row seat to the amazing Mendenhall Glacier. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled during the float as you will likely see eagles, otters, and maybe even a bear or two!

Go Deep Sea Fishing

Much of the Pacific Northwest is rooted in the fishing industry due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, however, Ketchikan Alaska is home to some of the best deep sea fishing. It’s actually known as the salmon capital of the world!

There are many different guided tours that will take you out into the open water! In addition to salmon, you may also catch halibut, rockfish, lingcod, and more depending on the time of year.

So Many Things to do in the Pacific Northwest!

As you can see, there are so many amazing things to do in the Pacific Northwest. From whale watching to soaking in hot springs, you could spend an entire lifetime exploring all the region has to offer.

Whether you are road tripping through Canada or basing your PNW trip from a major city (Seattle, Portland, Boise, etc.), you are sure to find adventures and incredible scenery that you will remember forever.

Pacific Northwest Road Trip Itinerary: 14 days

Day 1-2: north cascades national park.

diablo lake

Accommodation:

  • The Rolling Huts: They are not located inside the park but near it. It is difficult to find accommodation near North Cascades, so this is a good option. >>>Check It Out Here

My favorite national park in Washington is North Cascades National Park. This place is highly underrated! The bright blue turquoise color of the lake and the mountains in the background make this one of the best viewpoints in the state of Washington. Many people do not visit this national park because the trails are challenging, making it harder for families with small children to see.

I still think it is worth it to stop here even if you are traveling with small children. Some of the more accessible trails include Blue Lake and Thunder Knob, and two of the best viewpoints are Diablo Lake Vista Point (shown in the photo above) and Washington Pass Observation Site.

More strenuous hikes for avid hikers are Maple Pass Loop, Thornton Lakes, Cutthroat Pass, Cascade Pass, and Hidden Lake.

Day 3: Seattle

  • Hotel Four Seasons Hotel Seattle : The view here is probably some of the best you can find in a hotel in Seattle and it is so close to Pike Place Market, the most popular activity in the city. >>>Check It Out Here

I lived in Seattle for years, and it is still one of my favorite cities in the United States! The food is so good, and I love walking around and exploring this one-of-a-kind place. The mountains in the distance with the Pudget Sound next to it makes Seattle one of the most breathtaking cities I have seen.

Download my Washington Hiking Checklist!

Some of the most popular things to do are to see Pike Place Market, The Needle, The Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, Olympic Sculpture Park, Discovery Park, Golden Gardens Beach, The Seattle Troll, Gas Works Park, or the Seattle Great Wheel. You only need a day or two to explore most popular activities. Seattle is great, but what makes Washington unique is everything outside of the city. The outdoor scene in Washington is probably some of the best in the United States. So make sure you don’t spend most of your road trip in Seattle.

Day 4-5: Olympic National Park

tour pacific north west

  • Olympic Lodge: I stayed at the Olympic Lodge for one weekend, and it’s one of the city’s best hotels. It isn’t a five-star hotel, and I feel like the lighting needs some major updating, but it is the best hotel on the Peninsula. Also, the hotel is located close to Hurricane Ridge.    >Click Here To Check Pricing

Olympic National Park is one of the most popular areas in Washington. The reason is because this place is so diverse as it has mountains, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, and rainforests! It has it all! Olympic National Park is an outdoor lovers paradise! Since it has so much to offer, there is so much driving to do, and it is best to explore here for two days minimum.

I recommend lumping the west side of the park for one day and the northern part for another day. The most popular things in the north area include Mount Storm King, Marymere Falls, Hurricane Ridge, and Sol Duc Falls.

The western side has beautiful beaches like Ruby Beach, Shi Shi, and Second Beach. Also, the Hall Of Mosses is so green and lush, and it is perfection! You don’t want to miss that.

Mount Rainier is the most well-known mountain in the state of Washington. You can see it from Seattle, even though it is located over 3 hours away! Hiking in the National Park is a must when you visit this state. The best and most popular part is the Paradise area, and I love exploring it! The best things to see there include Skyline Trail, Nisqually Vista Trail, Reflection Lakes, and Comet Falls.

If you head over to the Sunrise area, Fremont lookout and Naches Loop are my favorite trails! Naches Loop is magnificent in the Summer when all the wildflowers are out.

Waterfalls are not the only thing to see here. The views of the Columbia River Gorge are stunning, especially at the Hood River Waterfront Park. There are also many wineries and fabulous restaurants near Hood River City. I especially loved the Solstice Wood Fire Pizza.

Mount Hood is a beautiful area near the Columbia River Gorge, so it is best to stay at Hood River City for another night. Mount Hood has so many farms and vineyards as well as some incredible hikes! Day 11: Bend

  • Hotel SpringHill Suites by Marriott Bend:  We stayed at this hotel, and I loved it. It was clean, close to many restaurants, breweries, and had a nice bar.  >>>Book Here

My favorite city in Oregon is, of course, the city of Bend! There is so much to do in this cute city. I have been here many times, but I feel like I did not see enough every time I left. I always left wanting to explore even more. They have many breweries, wineries, and outdoor activities. Some of the popular hikes in the area include  South Sister Summit , and  Green Lakes Trail . There is also Smith Rock (pictured above), which is located near Bend. Smith Rock is probably my favorite outdoor area at Bend, primarily because you can rock climb.

Day 12: Crater Lake

crater lake national park

  • Crater Lake Lodge:  One of the few hotels located in the National Park.   >>>Book Here

Crater Lake National Park is the only national park located in Oregon. It is breathtaking, and the color of the bright emerald blue water is truly spectacular. I recommend stopping by and taking a look at the lake from one of the many viewpoints. Watchman Overlook, Phantom Ship Overlook, and Cloudcap Overlook have the best viewpoints. You can also hike to the water and swim in it. The only trail with access to the lake is Cleetwood Cove Trail .

Day 13: Oregon Coast

Natural Bridges

  • Tu Tu’ Tun   Lodge (Gold Beach):  This place is fantastic and nestled in a beautiful forest area. >>>Check It Out Here

My favorite part of the Oregon Coast is the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor located in the southern area. It is so dreamy! The one shown in the picture above is called the Natural Bridges. Be careful in this area as the trail is very sketchy and dangerous. Wear good hiking shoes.

The Oregon Coast is a lot more than Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, and you can spend weeks at the coast. If you want to do more than the scenic corridor, check out my blog post below, where I list out even more activities.

Day 14: Redwoods National Park

Redwoods National Park

  • Hotel Holiday Inn Express Redwood National Park, an IHG Hotel : There are no official hotels in the national park, but this one here is quite nice. >>>Book Hotel Here

The last national park on this list is the Redwoods National Park. It is located in California, and I have been here multiple times. Some of the best things to do are hiking Stout Grove, discovering the Lady Johnson Grove, and exploring Fern Canyon. The trees are so big and tall, and the area’s fern seems to go on forever.

After living in Washington for a few years, I know when the best time for this road trip is, and it is the summer months. This includes the months of July, August, and September. Many people ask me about June, but June is usually too early. The best places are generally under snow during this time. November-March is also very rainy and snowy, so I would not recommend this itinerary during this time.

I will warn you that the summer months tend to bring fires, so you might have to adjust this itinerary to avoid fire and smoke.

What To Pack For A PNW Road Trip

  • Sunscreen:  Super important and it is part of the ten essentials!   >Buy Sunscreen
  • Chapstick:  This one has SPF so your lips won’t get burned!  >Check Out This Chapstick
  • Hiking Boots/Shoes:  If you use tennis shoes, you can easily hurt your toes hitting a rock by accident (Trust me, I have done it so many times before).  >Check Out My Hiking Shoes
  • Hiking socks:  Having the correct socks helps you prevent getting blisters. Smart Wool is probably my favorite brand out there.   >Buy Hiking Socks
  • Water Reservoir:  Water reservoirs help prevent me from getting dehydrated while hiking. The great thing about this reservoir is that it doesn’t have the plastic taste.  >Here Is My Water Reservoir
  • Water:  Stay nice and hydrated.
  • Sunglasses:  It can get sunny, so make sure to pack some sunglasses.  >Check Out These Sunglasses
  • Snacks:  The best snacks are jerky, nuts, and energy bars.  >>>Love These Snacks Here
  • Camera:  The Sony A6000 was one of the first cameras I started traveling with. The Sony A6000 is an excellent camera for people that want to start improving at travel photography.    >Buy Sony Camera Here
  • First Aid Kit:  This is one of the first things I bought when I first started going on adventures. It is super portable.  >Buy This Awesome First Aid Kit Here
  • Day Pack to carry all your things:  To carry all your gear, water, and food, you need a good backpack. Osprey is known to have some of the best backpacks in the market.  >Buy This Great Quality Backpack
  • Headlamp:  A headlamp is an absolute must in case you get stranded in the dark! It is a lot more portable and easier to use than a flashlight.  >Buy A Headlamp Now
  • Leggings or Hiking Pants:  I always wear leggings while hiking because it is what I feel most comfortable with!  >Click For My Favorite Hiking Leggings
  • Breathable sweat-wicking shirts : Cotton shirts soak up your sweat when hiking, so make sure to wear something breathable.  >Check out this awesome breathable shirt here.
  • Mid Base Layer:  It can get chilly in Oregon even in the summer.  >Check Out My Sweater Here
  • Sports Bra:  For women.  >Check This One Here
  • Jacket:  I always have a jacket in my backpack, even if it is hot. I do it just in case of an emergency.   >Buy My Favorite Jacket
  • Rain Jacket:  The worst feeling in the world is being wet and cold while hiking. You can get hypothermia, so always carry a poncho or a rain jacket when you hike Oregon.  >Check Out My Rain Jacket Here
  • Tripod:  This is an optional item, but it is excellent for getting the ideal sunset pictures.  >Check out this tripod
  • Knife:  I always carry a knife in my backpack just in case.  >Check Out My Knife Here

Alaska Airlines empowers students in the Pacific Northwest: Flying dozens to college tours

In partnership with local organizations, Alaska Airlines flew more than 60 BIPOC high school juniors from Seattle and Portland to tour historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)

Last month, we flew 60 BIPOC students from the Pacific Northwest to tour colleges in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta area is home to many HBCUs, including Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, Morris Brown, and Fort Valley State. Some students continued to tour additional schools along the East Coast, including Tuskegee University, Alabama State, Howard, and more. Given the absence of HBCUs in the Northwest, these trips inspire students to experience the cultural richness and opportunities offered by HBCUs.

While at the schools, students spoke with admissions counselors, current students and administrators about the importance of going to college, the admissions process and financial aid.

These college tours wouldn’t have been possible without our longstanding partnership with UNCF and Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI).

“The HBCU tour exposes and highlights the opportunities for our young people to strive for higher education. Seeing a version of themselves on these campuses inspires and excites them. Our students come back more focused and believing that they can achieve anything that they put their energy and effort into. Based on financial limitations, SEI absolutely could not do this tour without the support of Alaska Airlines.” – Anthony Deloney, Director of Development at Self Enhancement, Inc.

The Alaska airlines sendoff alone was probably the best thing I’ve experienced at SEI, and I’ve been here 27 years.” – Tamra Hickok, Director of Program Innovation at Self Enhancement, Inc.

Over two decades of collaboration with UNCF

UNCF’s mission is to build a robust and nationally recognized pipeline of underrepresented students who become highly qualified college graduates. Alaska Airlines has been a proud partner with UNCF for more than 18 years – donating more than 20 million miles to fly students to attend college tours. We invite our guests to donate miles to UNCF through our CARE Miles program to support this effort.

This year’s spring break tour followed last year’s inaugural experience with the organization.

SEI & Alaska help move Portland forward

Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) is a pillar in the North Portland community— providing academic support and services for Black students and their families. SEI’s strength is in its ability to meet the complex needs of the children and families it serves, including helping people to overcome cultural, educational and economic barriers. Alaska has been a steadfast supporter of SEI’s annual fundraiser for over a decade. However, this year marked a significant milestone as it was the first time we extended support to SEI’s annual HBCU tour.

SEI HBCU tour stops included Tuskegee University, Alabama State University, Clark University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Johnson C Smith University, North Carolina A&T University, and Howard University. Hear Janiya’s experience at the tour and how each one impacted her college journey!

Former NBA Star Channing Frye Lists His Massive Portland, OR, Home for Nearly $6M

Pro hoopster  Channing Frye , who spent 14 seasons in the NBA, is ready to offload his enormous Portland, OR , home for $5.9 million.

He purchased the property in 2014 for $2,350,000.

The nearly 10,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, seven-bath mansion sits on a pretty 1-acre lot in the city’s Dunthorpe neighborhood.

Rhododendron hedges surround this stately Colonial, where original charms and modern sensibilities meet.

Well-known designer Jessica Helgerson renovated the 1943 home into a bright yet cozy family retreat.

Lofty ceilings, a fireplace, and artful paint and wallpaper infuse the rooms with elegance and color.

The kitchen sports a full suite of high-end appliances, including three Sub-Zero fridges, a Wolf range, two ovens, and a Miele dishwasher. French doors lead out to a lush lawn, pool, hot tub, fire pit, and pickleball court.

The main bedroom is a showcase of soaring ceilings, a large gas fireplace, and lovely backyard views. Meanwhile, the nearby primary bath has a soaking tub, steam shower, and an infrared sauna.

For those who love to entertain, the lower level awaits with a home theater, wet bar, and a bespoke table for card games. There’s also a reading nook adorned with lacquer paneling and hand-painted wallpaper.

Frye was drafted into the NBA in 2005 as the eighth pick and chosen by the New York Knicks . He played two years for the team before moving on to the Phoenix Suns , Portland Trailblazers , and Cleveland Cavaliers , among other squads.

Frye retired from the court in 2019 but still dabbles in the sport with appearances on NBA TV and via his podcast, “Road Trippin.'”
