Burj Khalifa

Dubai is famous for its dramatic skyscrapers, and above them all looms the Burj Khalifa , shaped like a deep-space rocket and, at 828m, the world's tallest building. Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

The long-running annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature brings authors and thousands of book fans together to celebrate all things reading and writing. Held over nine days in March, the festival hosts talks, discussions, panels and a special program just for children, with many activities free to attend. It offers attendees a chance to meet local and world-famous authors, attend literary debates and workshops, participate in competitions and be inspired by their literary heroes.

Global Village

The carnival-like Global Village is a bit like a ‘world fair’ for shoppers, and you'll find it on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311). Each of the 30-something pavilions showcases a specific nation’s culture and products. Aside from shopping, there's also lots of entertainment – from Chinese opera to Turkish whirling dervishes – as well as a funfair with dozens of rides from tame to terrifying.

Burj Al Arab

This landmark luxe hotel, with its dramatic design that mimics the billowing sail of a ship, floats on its own artificial island and has become the iconic symbol of Dubai’s boom years. The Burj Al Arab's interior is all about impact, drama and unapologetic bling, with dancing fountains, gold fittings, shiny marble and whirlpool baths your butler can fill with champagne if you so wish. Dubai Frame

Opened in January 2018, this 150m rectangular 'picture frame' sits in Zabeel Park , right between historic and modern Dubai, and provides grand views of both parts of the city. Al Qudra Lake

One for the nature lovers, Al Qudra Lake is a series of man-made lakes set amidst the rolling dunes of the Saih Al Salam desert on Dubai’s southern outskirts. Part of the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, the surrounding area is unspoiled. Swap skyscrapers for wide open dunes and oasis-like pools where you can spot plenty of free-roaming wildlife, more than 100 species of birds and several desert plants.

This long, pristine stretch of white sand, off Jumeirah Road and next to a mosque, is superclean and has lots of activities, including kitesurfing, beach tennis, beach volleyball and kayaking. There are showers, wi-fi, toilets and changing facilities on Kite Beach , plus lots of food trucks and cafés. It offers great views of the Burj Al Arab, and gets very busy on Friday and Saturday when a seaside market with crafts and gifts sets up.

Perfume Museum

The waterfront Perfume Museum is part of the Al Shindagha Museum restoration project and is the former home of a Dubai sheikha who loved all things perfume. The old building has been restored and its interactive exhibits are based around scent, smells and fragrance. Keep your entry ticket and you’ll get free access to the nearby Dubai Creek House .

Steps from the Deira Old Souk abra station, the sound of Arabic chatter bounces around the lanes of this covered market. Dubai's famous Spice Souk is filled with intoxicating sights and smells. Its vendors work hard to unload cardamom, saffron and other aromatic herbs photogenically stored in burlap sacks alongside nuts, incense burners, henna kits, shishas and dried limes. Dubai Creek separates the city into two towns, with Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south.

The creek has been an influential element in the city's growth, first attracting settlers here to fish and pearl dive. Small villages grew up alongside the creek as far back as 4,000 years ago, while the modern era began in the 1830s when the Bani Yas tribe settled in the area.

The creek is where you come to capture city views from the water, either by taking a trip on one of the many dhows that have been restored as tourist cruise boats or by hopping on an abra (small wooden ferry) between the ferry points on the creek's Bur Dubai and Deira banks.

Lined with distinct Arabian architecture, the narrow lanes are highly evocative of a bygone, and much slower, age in Dubai's history.

Inside the district, you'll find the Majlis Gallery , with its collection of traditional Arab ceramics and furniture (housed in a wind-tower), and the Al Serkal Cultural Foundation with a shop, café, and rotating art exhibitions (located in one of the historic buildings).

In its history, the fort has served as a residence for the ruling family, a seat of government, garrison, and prison. Restored in 1971 (and again extensively in 1995), it is now the city's premier museum.

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum was the Ruler of Dubai from 1921 to 1958 and grandfather to the current ruler. His former residence has been rebuilt and restored as a museum that is a fine example of Arabian architecture.

The original house was built in 1896 by Sheikh Saeed's father, so he could observe shipping activity from the balconies.

It was demolished, but the current house was rebuilt next to the original site, staying true to the original model by incorporating carved teak doors, wooden lattice screens across the windows, and gypsum ventilation screens with floral and geometric designs.

Thirty rooms are built around a central courtyard with wind-tower details on top.

Inside are the exhibits of the Dubai Museum of Historical Photographs and Documents with many wonderful old photographs of Dubai from the period between 1948 and 1953.

The marine wing of the museum has photos of fishing, pearling, and boat building. Throughout the building there are many letters, maps, coins, and stamps on display showing the development of the Emirate.

Nearby is the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum , which explores the United Arab Emirates' historic role as a trading center between Asia, Africa, and Europe long before oil became this region's most prominent industry.

Located inside the old residence of Sheikh Hashr bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, who was a member of Dubai's ruling family, the exhibits trace this coastal area's history as part of the global trade routes, with displays of artifacts and manuscripts.

For the best weather, particularly if you're going to hit the beach or head out into the desert during your trip, plan to travel here during the months of November or April when the average daytime temperatures sit between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius, and only peak as high as 31 degrees.

These two months usher in plenty of blue skies and sunshine for outdoor activities, but without the scorching heat of summer. Whichever month you choose, pack a warmer layer. You will need it to counter the ferocious air conditioning of Dubai's many indoor venues.

Other Considerations When Timing Your Visit to Dubai

Before deciding on which month to visit, check out when Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting is happening. During this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sundown every day. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the dates for Ramadan shift every year.

Ramadan in the UAE is strictly followed, and eating, drinking, chewing gum, and smoking in all public spaces is forbidden from daybreak to sunset for everyone, including non-Muslims.

Although some restaurants, mostly those based in international brand hotels and usually one designated café in a mall, will still serve food during the day (with blinds pulled down across the restaurant windows, so that those fasting don't need to see people eating) nearly all restaurants and cafés shut during daylight hours and only open up at sunset.

From sunset onwards, it's feasting time, with many hotels and restaurants putting on special Iftar (the Ramadan after sunset meal) menus, which need to be pre-booked due to high demand.

Businesses, including tourist sights and shops, are open, but keep shorter hours for the entire month.

A benefit of visiting during Ramadan is that the city is less busy than usual, as many Dubai locals decide to head on holiday during this month, and the city also receives fewer tourists.

The most tourist-friendly destination of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai continues to attract and enthrall visitors from around the world.

The sprawling desert metropolis is known for its luxury hotels, duty-free shopping and general glitz and glamour, but it offers a far wider scope of activities and attractions than its reputation suggests.

A picture of ultra-modern architecture, soaring skyscrapers and the blue waters of the Persian Gulf, the city (and emirate) also possesses several well-preserved local sites and attractions of historic and cultural significance, from the Jumeirah Mosque to Alserkal Avenue.

This makes for a city with an abundance and wide-ranging variety of things to do; whether you want to explore historic districts, wander the world’s largest mall or have dinner in the desert, Dubai should have something to catch your attention.

So whether you’ve already booked your trip or are still caught in two minds, fear not; we’ve rounded up a list of some of the best things to do in Dubai.

Visit the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain and Marina

The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a modern symbol of Dubai and one of its most visited sites. Standing at 830 metres tall, anyone can visit the observation deck, named ‘At The Top’, on the 124th floor of the building (and at a height of 452 metres) for a panoramic view of the city and its marina.

At the foot of the building lies the Burj Khalifa lake, a 30-acre artificial lake that is mostly known as the home of the Dubai Fountain. This 270-metre tall fountain is the tallest performing fountain in the world, with light shows consisting of over 6,000 lights dancing to different songs, ranging from classical Arab to contemporary world pop. These two structures are perhaps the highlights of the Dubai Marina, a man-made marina with a waterside promenade, its own mall and dozens of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Discover the city’s Old Town

Away from the malls and skyscrapers, you’ll find Dubai’s characterful ‘Old Town’. Traditional buildings, local markets and cultural centres are the draw here, with several of the city’s best districts contained within the area. There’s nowhere better to start than Al Fahidi, a historic neighbourhood where gypsum buildings and wind towers have been restored to provide a contrasting reminder of the city’s old skyline. The Al Fahidi Fort is the oldest building in Dubai – built in 1871 – while the Centre for Cultural Understanding provides opportunities for visitors to learn about Emirati culture. Other notable sites in the area include the city’s Coffee Museum and the Arabian Tea House, a highly rated cafe serving traditional Emirati cuisine.

Al Seef, along the Dubai Creek waterside, is a blend of the old and new, where more gypsum buildings and narrow, winding streets meet more modern buildings and a background of skyscrapers. Across the Creek lies Deira, a district renowned for its traditional souks (more on them later).

Visit the Jumeirah Mosque

Built in a Fatimid style (a mix of Syrian and Egyptian architectural styles characterised by keel-shaped arches, columns and ornamentation among other things), the Jumeirah Mosque opened in 1979 and can accommodate 1,500 worshippers. Easily recognisable with its two towering minarets, it is one of the only mosques in the UAE that is open to non-Muslims (and the general public) and has guided visits and opportunities to learn about Islam, its customs and history. The mosque is open every day other than Friday; be sure to adhere to dress codes, although the website does say that Kandooras (Emirati national dress for men), Abayas (national dress for women) and Sheilas (head scarves) are available to borrow.

Sail across Dubai Creek

The location where many of the first settlers made their home – and an early port – Dubai Creek lies at the heart of the city. Separating the Deira area from Bur Dubai, it is now a popular tourist attraction for the boats – named abras – that you can travel across the water in for just 1 AED (around 21p). There are two routes across; the first is from Deira Old Souk Abra Station to Bur Dubai, while the second, busier route goes from Al Sabkha to Dubai Old Souk. Each crossing takes around five minutes, giving travellers exceptional views of both the old and new parts of the city.

Go shopping in the world’s largest mall

Situated next to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall, with over 1,200 shops covering over half-a-million square metres. Visitors can expect anything from luxury stores to well-known international brands and American department stores, with over 200 different places to eat once you’re done shopping. For kids, the mall even houses an aquarium, ‘underwater zoo’ and go kart track, while the entire area is mercifully air conditioned in the summer months.

Go on a desert safari (or have a romantic desert dinner)

Several companies offer excursions into the desert surrounding Dubai, from camel riding and barbecue buffets to quad biking and overnight stays in tents. Spending a day rolling across the golden dunes offers an adventurous alternative to strolling around malls, whether you choose to go on a leisurely drive, dune buggy over the sands or visit conservation reserves to see flora and fauna. As night falls, visitors can watch the sunset while enjoying an unforgettable lamp-lit meal among the dunes. Combine this with an overnight stay to really experience the best of what Dubai’s desert has to offer.

Explore the souks

Dubai’s souks are a legendary form of traditional Arab market. Some of them are among the most well-known attractions in Dubai, selling an enticing range of products, from spice mixes to gold and hand-woven local crafts. Many of these are housed in the aforementioned Deira district (some stops for the abras are named after them), including the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Perfume Souk.

The Gold Souk is arguably Dubai’s most famous market, a beacon for those in search of gold, silver and fine jewellery, while the Spice Souk offers, as you’d expect, a colourful array of spices and dried herbs. The Textile Souk (found across the Creek in Bur Dubai) is a network of covered alleyways offering clothing, shawls and souvenirs made from fabrics including silk, wool and cashmere.

There are also a handful of modern souks, built to provide a different shopping experience. The Madinat Jumeirah is prime among them; part of the Madinat Jumeirah resort, it was built to mirror the traditional aspects and architecture of a souk but also offers galleries, restaurants and shops. The Ripe Markets – Dubai’s take on farmer’s markets – run in different locations around the city, with street stalls and boutiques selling organic foods and fresh produce.

Head to the beach

Beaches may not be the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about Dubai, but with the weather sometimes sweltering, you may well appreciate a dip in the sea. The hundreds of miles of beaches here range from free-to-access stretches to exclusive beach clubs.

JBR beach is the city’s busiest – a long stretch of golden sand with a backdrop of the city’s skyscrapers and the Ain wheel – while Jumeirah Open Beach is a more relaxed alternative. Kite Beach is another free-access area, an eight-mile stretch of white sand that is also a trendy area for pop-up shops, food trucks and cafes. For a tranquil spot, try Sunset Beach; the city’s only decent surfing beach, it offers great sunset vistas and a particularly enviable view of the Burj Al Arab.

Beach clubs are common too, for those looking to up the glam factor. Nikki Beach has a location in Dubai, while other reputed clubs include Azure Beach, DRIFT and Riva. Most clubs have pools and served a range of food, with entry prices ranging from around £15 to over £65.

Learn about the UAE at the Etihad Museum

Open since 2016, the Etihad Museum showcases contemporary Emirati history at the site where the UAE was founded in 1971. The museum’s eight pavilions hold a range of artefacts and interactive guides, from personal possessions of the rulers to the first written version of the country’s constitution. Other exhibitions focus on pictures of the developing nation, documentaries, interactive maps and a homage to the important moments before 1971.

Tickets for the museum cost roughly £5, and it’s recommended to spend at least an hour there to have a good nose around. Last ticket sales are at 7pm ahead of an 8pm closing time.

Go on an adventure in Hatta

If you care to venture beyond the desert, you’ll find the mountainous Hatta region. Located in the Hajar mountains (roughly 80 miles from the city itself), the region contains a Heritage Village, a centuries-old restored village that retains its defensive tower, stone houses and traditional falaj water system. Dramatic mountains offer scenic hiking and mountain biking opportunities, while canoeing, kayaking and boat rides are available on the emerald lakes (such as the one by Hatta Dam).

Take in the culture of Alserkal Avenue

Though the grey and blue warehouses of Alserkal (in the Al Quoz district) may not look too inspiring from the outside, in reality these buildings house dozens of art galleries, cafes and shops. The city’s artistic hub, Alserkal offers myriad surprises for visitors, whether stumbling across an independent records shop (The Flip Side) or watching indie films at Cinema Akil.

Popular galleries include the Green Art gallery, 1X1 and Carbon 12, while creative spaces such as Kave: The Story of Things host workshops including guitar making and embroidery. Food options, meanwhile, range from vegan tacos to handmade Belgian chocolate.

Get golfing

Golf in Dubai caters for everyone, from seasoned golf travellers to total amateurs, with activities ranging from championship courses to Top Golf driving ranges. The city plays host to several professional tournaments, and its climate offers the perfect weather for getting out onto the greens (when summer temperatures soar to unbearable heights, many courses offer the opportunity to play at night under floodlights).

Regardless of level, the opportunity to play surrounded by sea, sun and skyscrapers is not one to be missed. Some of the city’s premier courses include the Trump International, Dubai Creek, Emirates Golf Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates, with green fees anywhere between £20 to £175.

Visit a theme park

Dubai has a whole host of theme parks and waterparks to keep kids (and big kids) happy during their visit. One for both adults and children, Global Village is a park with several pavilions, shows and dining areas that showcase culture from 90 different countries across the world, while the IMG Adventure Park is the world’s largest indoor theme park, with dozens of rides and areas relating to Marvel characters, Cartoon Network and the ‘Lost Valley’ of dinosaurs.

The Hollywood-inspired Motiongate has several rides inspired by blockbuster classics, from Shrek to The Hunger Games , while the city’s Legoland park is another popular choice, home to over 40 rides and attractions and six themed lands, plus its own waterpark. On the subject of waterparks, Dubai has several: Wild Wadi, Aquaventure and Laguna are some of the best, with wave pools, 18-metre waterfalls, lazy rivers and even a 34-metre tall tower ride among the highlights.

Explore Dubai in one day: The perfect 24-hour itinerary for tourists

Dubai: Many people wonder – can you really explore Dubai in one day? We say, yes!

Depending on your flight timings and accommodation plans, there's a lot you could check off on the tourist bucket list. And if you plan to land in Dubai in the morning and leave after midnight, you could even get away without booking a place to stay.

For this guide, we assume this is your plan. The below sample itinerary could be modified according to your specific plans, as long as you figure out which timings can be adjusted.

From the airport

If your arrival airport is Dubai International Airport (DXB), you may have access to the metro depending on which terminal you arrive at – Terminals 1 and 3 are linked to the Dubai Metro. If you land at Al Maktoum International Airport or Dubai World Central (DWC), you’ll have to either take a shuttle bus (half-hourly during the day and hourly during the night) to a metro/bus stop close to your destination, or you could get a taxi. 

Since most flights currently fly out of DXB airport, this itinerary assumes that as your start and end point.

On to old Dubai

First, we head to old Dubai – this location paints a very different picture than the ones normally associated with Dubai. This part of the emirate houses beautiful souks or markets and traditional Arabian architecture and brings about an old-worldly charm to this shiny and novel city.

A must-do when here is to take the abra – a water ferry that goes across the Creek from Bur Dubai to Deira and vice versa for just one dirham. The abra stations are open from 5am to midnight, so if you end up in the area a bit early (shops open after 9am), you can still enjoy a couple of abra rides before it gets hot.

Spice Souk, Gold Souk and Perfume Souk are on the Deira side, while the Bur Dubai side has the Old Souk, which is also called the Bur Dubai Souk or the Textile Souk. If you have time, you could explore the Al Fahidi Historical District which houses Dubai’s oldest building, Al Fahidi Fort.

Plan to get souvenirs to take back home from these souks and make sure to bargain. From sand art in glass bottles, tableware, clothes and carpets to spices, coffee and gold, there is so much to check out in this area. Don’t forget to get a hot cup of karak and a breakfast roll to fuel up before you leave.

How to get there

There are a few metro stations that you can choose to get off at, depending on where you want to spend the most time. Palm Deira and Ghubaiba metro stations are near the Bur Dubai Abra stop while Al Ras and Al Fahidi are closer to the Deira Old Souk Abra station.

Dubai Frame

Given that there is limited time, it is best to choose one of these attractions to go to depending on your interest. The Dubai Frame is an iconic structure in Zabeel Park that literally 'frames' old and new Dubai.

It is the largest frame in the world and houses an exhibition that showcases the growth of Dubai. While there, you can walk on the glass walkway connecting the two towers. Tickets cost Dh50 per adult.

The closest metro stop is Al Jafiliya (Red Line). You will have to take a cab from the metro stop at minimum fare (Dh12) to get to the destination.

Museum of the Future

Instead, you could choose to go to another iconic landmark, touted as the ‘the most beautiful building on Earth’. The Museum of the Future is one of the newest structures to open to the public and has already become a major tourist attraction – tickets (Dh149 per person) are almost always sold out for weeks.

The museum is otherworldly in terms of the innovation on display. If travelling with children, a visit to this museum will be an educational and fun one with its dedicated section for kids. The unique architectural marvel has seven distinct floors offering an immersive experience powered by virtual reality and AI.

The nearest metro stop to this one is Emirates Towers (Red Line) from where you can walk to the attraction. If you decide to do both attractions, we suggest taking a cab from one to the other in less than 10 minutes one way.

Mall of the Emirates

Assuming you spent two hours in Old Dubai, and two-three hours at Dubai Frame and/or Museum of the Future, you may be getting hot and hungry right about now. Next up on our itinerary is Mall of the Emirates. 

We suggest a quick lunch, either at the food court or at one of the many restaurants here. You could also kick-start your big brand shopping at this mall.

A major crowd-puller at this shopping destination is Ski Dubai – an indoor snow entertainment park. From feeding penguins (fixed timings) to snow rides and skating, Ski Dubai can be a fun attraction to check off your list of places to go in Dubai.

Head on to the Dubai Metro and hop off the Mall of the Emirates metro station (Red Line).

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

Next up is more shopping and photo-ops with a landmark Dubai building in the background – Burj Al Arab. Take a cab from the Mall of the Emirates (around 10 minutes depending on traffic) to Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Along with many shops featuring textiles, jewellery and trip memorabilia, Souk Madinat Jumeirah also has amazing restaurants and cafes to try, many of which boast views of Burj Al Arab. There is a canal running through the destination on which you can take an abra ride.

For the perfect photo with the landmark, head to the balcony next to Costa Coffee on Level 1 of the shopping venue. Alternatively, you could head to the beach nearby for that perfect shot – it may be really hot during the day though.

Take a cab from the Mall of the Emirates (around 10 minutes depending on traffic) to Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

Palm Jumeirah

The Palm in Dubai is the poster image for most Dubai travel guides – the incredible man-made archipelago of islands that houses luxury hotels and residences. The arch of Atlantis Dubai and now, the Royal Atlantis (which was inaugurated with a Beyonce performance), is postcard-Dubai. We suggest a quick drive through the Palm on a cab to enjoy the views and you could get pictures on the promenade.

However, if you would rather see the Palm from high up above, as originally intended, head to The View in Palm Tower. For Dh100 (Dh125 for the coffee package), you can see The Palm from a height of 240 metres. The View is an observatory on the 52nd floor of the Palm Tower which offers 360-degree views of the archipelago. The destination also has an exhibition.

If you want to splurge you could try The View Next level, which offers access to the VIP Lounge along with Levels 52 and 54. This ticket is priced at Dh325 per adult. From this destination, you could also try Dubai’s monorail system.

We suggest a cab ride from Souk Madinat Jumeirah as it is the shortest and most convenient way to get to the Palm Tower. 

Bluewaters Island

From The Palm, head to Bluewaters Island. Home to the world’s highest observation wheel, Ain Dubai, this destination is great for a nice stroll and great pictures. Ain Dubai is temporarily closed.

You can enjoy diverse dining spots here, or go on a stroll with views of Ain Dubai and Dubai Marina. The destination is designed uniquely and makes for a fun stop on your one-day trip to Dubai.

We suggest taking a cab if your previous stop was The View. However, if you altered the itinerary and are on the Dubai Metro, Damac Metro Station is your best choice. You could also head here from JBR on a footbridge connecting the two destinations – the nearest metro on that side is Jumeirah Lake Towers Metro Station.

Dubai Mall, Dubai Fountains

We have kept this one for last so that the timings align for all three of the attractions. The metro is the best choice to head here, so you could take a cab from Bluewaters Island to the nearest metro stop (Damac) and get off at Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa metro station. If you’re driving or in a cab, Fountain Parking or Cinema Parking would be closest to the fountains.

Dubai Mall is one of the largest malls in the world and has nearly all of the big brands that you would want to shop at while in the country. It also houses the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo – a great choice especially if travelling with children and have the time. Tickets cost Dh199 per person. The Aquarium Tunnel or the Glass Bottom Boat ride should only take 15-30 minutes each but other activities can take upward of an hour at least.

The view of Dubai Fountains (the world’s tallest performing fountains) and Burj Khalifa go hand-in-hand with the half-hourly fountain shows starting at 6pm. The shows go on until 11pm. The shows are free to watch and the walkway and bridge there give you the best photo-ops with Burj Khalifa in the background. You can pay (starting at Dh20 per person) to get closer to the performance on the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk or with a Dubai Fountain Lake Ride.

The metro is the best choice to head here, so you could take a cab from Bluewaters Island to the nearest metro stop (Damac) and get off at Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa metro station. If you’re driving or in a cab, Fountain Parking or Cinema Parking would be closest to the fountains.

Burj Khalifa

Next is ‘At The Top’ in Burj Khalifa, inside the world’s tallest building. Tickets for this experience (access to Levels 124 and 125) need to be booked in advance and vary in price depending on the timing. In this itinerary, we have scheduled this for the night, which offers the best views and aligns with the rest of our plans. If you have the time, you choose to do this during other time slots but it can add to your travel duration.

The slots for weekdays are from 9am – 11pm, and 5am – midnight on weekends. Prime hours are from 3pm to 6.30pm (starts at Dh244 per adult) and non-prime hours are all other times from 8am to midnight (starts at Dh169 per adult). This summer, two kids (younger than 12) can go free with two accompanying adults.

You can book combos as well ranging from Dh300 to Dh800 which offer a range of different options. We suggest booking in advance but limited immediate tickets are also available. Finish off the night with dinner at one of the many restaurants at the venue - choices include everything from celebrity chef restaurants to fast food joints. 

And to the airport

Then, hop on the metro and get off at the Dubai Airport. The metro stops at midnight on most days (except weekends), so plan your departure accordingly - or you could get a cab.

If you did not have dinner at Dubai Mall, you can have it at the airport which has many restaurants and cafes to choose from. Depending on the airline you could opt to check in online and enjoy some downtime for your hectic day of travel with a meal, a massage, a facial or even a few hours of sleep at the airport.

The growth, which enabled the emirate to surpass global and regional tourism recovery levels, contributes to the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate Dubai’s status as one of the world’s top three cities for travel and business. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai said: “Dubai’s ability to rapidly accelerate tourism growth, which has marked it out as a clear frontrunner in the international industry,  demonstrates the far-reaching vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to transform the emirate into an important global player in shaping the future of vital sectors. The remarkable rise in international visitation in 2022 supports the ambitious goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to double the size of the emirate’s economy by 2033. The tourism and travel sector contributes significantly to the leadership’s aim of making the emirate a model for excellence in the global economy. “The exceptional growth in the inflow of visitors reflects Dubai’s continued rise as one of the world’s most connected cities and its determination to lead the world in hospitality infrastructure and service levels. The high growth shows the world that we never rest on our achievements and constantly work to raise our benchmarks. I am confident that Dubai will be an even greater catalyst for the growth of global tourism and travel connectivity in the years ahead." By closing in on its pre-pandemic visitation of 16.73 million in 2019, Dubai’s 2022 tourism performance further validated its ranking as the No.1 global destination in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2023 for the second successive year, only the second city in history to achieve the feat. The latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) shows that global tourist travel in 2022 was 37 per cent lower than 2019. The Middle East saw the strongest relative increase, with arrivals climbing to 83 per cent of pre-pandemic numbers. Dubai exceeded both global and regional barometers of recovery with visitors to the city in 2022 reaching 86 per cent of pre-pandemic levels. His Excellency, Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, said: “Aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the world’s most visited and re-visited destination, the performance of our industry in 2022 shows the extraordinary progress made by the city over the past two years. While the global economy remains in a state of flux, Dubai has emerged as a clear leader in the tourism industry. The robust performance is a testament to Dubai’s growing role at the vanguard of global tourism recovery. The positive momentum also shows that tourism remains a significant contributor to the city’s economic growth and sustainable development, further driving the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to reinforce Dubai’s status as one of world’s top three cities for tourism and business.   “The effectiveness of our strategies and initiatives gives us the confidence to tap new growth opportunities in the global travel and business sectors over the next few decades. Dubai’s international markets maintain momentum The strong performance in 2022 features some noteworthy spikes in Dubai’s traditional key markets and strong growth across emerging markets. Dubai remained a first-choice safe travel destination for visitors from the city’s stronghold markets. From a regional perspective, Western Europe and GCC regions each accounted for a 21 per cent share of arrivals. The GCC region in particular saw an exponential increase in their share of arrivals from 13 per cent in 2021 to 21 per cent last year. South Asia contributed 17 per cent of total volumes while the MENA region contributed 12 per cent, further reinforcing Dubai’s continued appeal to travellers from proximity markets. The Americas accounted for seven per cent of arrivals while the North Asia and South East Asia region and Africa each contributed five per cent and Australasia accounted for two per cent. His Excellency, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “As Dubai continues to grow exponentially in line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 launched by our visionary leadership to make Dubai one of the world’s top three cities for tourism and business,  it remains committed to moving to the next level with new and unique world-class infrastructure, experiences and attractions. The exceptional support of our public and private sector stakeholders and partners will be instrumental in raising our ability to showcase our unmatched offering designed to meet the diverse preferences and budgets of international travellers, as we gear up to welcome more visitors to Dubai in 2023.” Hospitality sector achieves significant growth Dubai’s hotel sector, which continues to be integral to the emirate’s destination promise and the overall growth of the tourism industry, continued to perform strongly across all hospitality metrics. Average occupancy for the hotel sector in 2022 stood at 73 per cent, one of the highest in the world, rising from 67 per cent in 2021. The figure is just short of the 75 per cent occupancy in the pre-pandemic period of 2019. The high occupancy is particularly noteworthy as it was achieved despite a 16 per cent increase in room supply in 2022 compared to 2019. Dubai’s hotel inventory at the end of December 2022 comprised of 146,496 rooms at 804 hotel establishments, compared to 126,120 rooms available at the end of December 2019 across 741 establishments. The total number of hotels in 2022 marked a six per cent growth over 2021, with 755 hotel establishments offering 137,950 rooms, figures that highlight the continued strong investor confidence in Dubai’s tourism sector.   The hotel sector outperformed pre-pandemic levels across all other key measurements – Occupied Room Nights, Average Daily Rate (ADR) and Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR). Occupied room nights reached a record high of 37.43 million room nights in 2022, registering a 19 per cent increase vs. 2021 (31.47 million) and a 17 per cent increase over the pre-pandemic period of 2019, which yielded 32.11 million occupied room nights. The ADR of AED536 in 2022 surpassed the ADRs for both 2021 (AED451) and 2019 (AED415), with 19 per cent and 29 per cent increases respectively. The hotel sector’s robust performance is also evident in its RevPAR growth – an increase of 30 per cent compared to 2021 (AED391 v AED301) and an increase of 25 per cent over the pre-pandemic period of 2019 (RevPAR of AED312). Celebrity-led global campaigns One of the driving factors behind Dubai’s success in 2022 can be attributed to captivating global campaigns conducted in collaboration with regional and international celebrities, opinion leaders, influencers and community personalities that highlighted the city’s unique appeal and brought to life the myriad experiences it offers. One such campaign is Dubai Presents, which takes a novel approach to global destination marketing, using a highly stylised movie approach to create engaging content. Shot against the backdrop of some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks and unique hidden locations, these short films feature Hollywood stars like Jessica Alba and Zac Efron. The ‘Where the World Celebrates’ global campaign that coincided with the FIFA World Cup in Qatar featured French football star Karim Benzema. International events destination One of the biggest success stories of the region in 2022, Expo 2020 Dubai, made a massive contribution to the tourism industry’s outstanding performance. The six-month long event, which attracted over 24 million visits, once again proved Dubai’s ability to host mega global events and reinforced its position as an international events destination. Dubai seeks to further enhance its destination proposition across all tourism pillars, leveraging the retail and events sectors to attract more domestic and global visitors. In addition to Expo 2020, Dubai continued to host global business and leisure events across 2022 including Gulfood, the World Government Summit, Binance Blockchain Week, Gitex Global Dubai, the International Boat Show and the Arabian Travel Market. In addition to this, the city also hosted the Skift Global Forum East, the first-ever international extension of the world’s flagship travel conference, the Skift Global Forum. At this event, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism announced the launch of an annual Dubai Tourism Summit. Every year, as part of its Retail Calendar, the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment team (DFRE) organises major festivals and events including the iconic internationally-renowned Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Food Festival, Dubai Summer Surprises and Dubai Fitness Challenge.  In 2022, DFRE also launched the inaugural Dubai Esports Festival, the largest international esports tournament to be held in the region. A leading sports tourism destination, Dubai also hosts an extensive line-up of annual global sports tournaments and events , attracting sporting icons, players and fans from around the world. In 2022 the city’s international sporting calendar included the Dubai World Cup horse race, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7s, the Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament and the DP World Tour championship, to name a few. Dubai pulled out all stops to enable residents and visiting fans to enjoy the FIFA World Cup 2022 at buzzing hotspots in the city. Dubai was chosen as one of six cities globally to host an official FIFA Fan Festival, making Dubai a focal point for the international football fraternity. Culinary innovation and accolades Dubai’s culinary sector was a significant driver of growth in 2022, with the city’s rich, creative and multi-cultural dining scene attracting visitors and accolades from across the globe. Dubai’s eclectic gastronomic scene features around 13,000 restaurants and cafés, ranging from homegrown eateries to gourmet institutions and fine dining restaurants, offering diverse cuisines. The city’s thriving culinary landscape was recognised with the launch of the inaugural MICHELIN Guide Dubai in June 2022. The first regional edition of the world’s most prestigious restaurant guide featured a total of 69 restaurants, including 14 Bib Gourmand winners. Further, Dubai’s restaurants and chefs were recognised in the inaugural edition of the Middle East & North Africa region’s 50 Best Restaurants list unveiled in February 2022, which celebrates culinary excellence across the region. The arrival of fine dining food critique brand Gault&Millau also contributed to the evolution of the dining scene in Dubai. In 2022, DET launched the region’s first-ever Gastronomy Industry Report, a comprehensive study of the gastronomy scene in the city and the region, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a highly sought-after global food tourism destination. Delivering on sustainability goals With sustainability embedded in its tourism strategy, Dubai has taken decisive measures to position itself as a top choice for holidaymakers seeking sustainable and safe destinations. Throughout 2022, Dubai worked tirelessly to achieve the city’s sustainability goals, led by Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST), an initiative aimed at raising the city’s profile as a leading sustainable destination. DST has taken steps to contribute to the city’s broader clean energy targets and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, as well as the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. With 2023 declared as the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and Expo City Dubai hosting COP28, the UN Climate Change conference, the year will be key for advancing Dubai’s vision to enhance sustainability and forge global cooperation to address vital issues. The last year saw the launch of ‘Dubai Can’, an innovative citywide sustainability initiative, as part of the drive to transform the emirate into a leading sustainable destination and the world’s best city to live and work. Global cruise and yacht tourism destination Cruise and yacht tourism played a crucial role in attracting international tourists and strengthening Dubai’s position as a global travel hub in 2022. The expansion of the cruise sector has further consolidated Dubai’s status as the cruise hub of the region. Similarly, with its world-class infrastructure, advanced facilities, year-round sunshine, luxury marinas, award-winning tourism offerings, rich maritime history and picturesque coastline, Dubai continues to amplify its appeal as a global superyacht hub.    New landmarks and initiatives to spur growth In 2022, a number of new attractions and initiatives were launched as part of the ever-evolving destination proposition. These include the unveiling of the Museum of the Future, Dubai’s new iconic landmark that offers a gateway to a future world. Dubai also unveiled Expo City, the dynamic legacy of Expo 2020, an innovation-driven, human centric vision of the future, and Atlantis The Royal, a mega resort located on Palm Jumeirah. With the implementation of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to expand the emirate’s tourism offering by over 100%, Dubai is on track to achieve its vision of becoming the city of the future. Moreover, Dubai will launch new initiatives aligned with the UAE 2031 Tourism Strategy, which seeks to attract 40 million guests by 2031 and increase the tourism sector's contribution to the emirate’s GDP to AED 450 billion. Dubai also continues to unveil strong regulatory initiatives to promote the accelerated growth of the tourism sector including hassle-free entry procedures for business and leisure travellers that streamline access to the emirate by establishing long-term engagement with the city. These include the 60-day tourist visa available from September 2022, and the Five-Year Multi-Entry Visa for employees of multinational companies, in addition to the Golden Visa, Virtual Working and Retire in Dubai programmes. In 2022, Dubai was selected as one of 20 destinations globally under Airbnb’s Live and Work Anywhere initiative to identify the world’s most remote worker-friendly destinations. Airbnb also launched the Dubai Remote Working Hub, a one-stop-shop for aspiring remote workers in partnership with Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism.

The post-pandemic world has seen many changes and struggles especially for the tourist sector.

Dubai has bravely faced these challenges through its innovation and dedication.

In 2024, the city’s exceptional performance in tourism has been underscored by various accolades like the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2024 (third year in a row) and being ranked as the world’s No.1 city destination in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023 by Euromonitor International.

These achievements are a result of programmes by the Dubai government like the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.

These initiatives aim to channel Dubai’s charm along with its world-class amenities and infrastructure to attract both visitors and workers.

In the past year, the city has entered into collaborations with icons like Real Madrid Club de Fútbol (opening a real-madrid theme park) and the artistic genius of Hans Zimmer who created “Sounds of Dubai” (a musical piece that shows the city’s vibe). 

It has also graciously hosted several global events including Gulfood and Gitex Global Dubai drawing crowds from far and wide.

All these have helped in reaffirming the city’s position as a top tourist destination.

Dubai Tourism Statistics 2024 (Key Points)

Total International Visitors in the month of January 2024 alone is 1.77 Million

According to the research done by GMI Team , a total of 17.15 million people visited Dubai between January and December 2023.

There was an approximate 19.43% increase in international visitors to Dubai in 2023 compared to 2022 (14.36 million).

Dubai boasts a substantial accommodation infrastructure, with 821 hotels catering to tourists.

Visitors to Dubai have access to a vast array of accommodation options, with 150,291 rooms available across the city.

The average daily rate for rooms in Dubai is 536 AED, offering tourists a range of choices to suit their budgets.

Accommodation Available in Dubai [Jan to Dec 2023]

As tourism in Dubai grows, so does its hospitality industry.

In 2023, the emirate saw a significant rise in both the number of hotels and available rooms.

The total number of hotels for accommodation rose to 821, up from 804 in 2022 and 755 in 2021.

In 2023, there were 150,291 rooms available, an increase from 146,496 in 2022 and 137,950 in 2021.

This indicates a growth of about 2.6% from 2022 and a notable 8.9% rise from 2021.

The average daily rate for rooms in Dubai remained constant at 536 AED in 2022 and 2023, showing a commitment towards competitive pricing.

However, there was a significant increase of 18.8% from the 2021 rate of 451 AED.

These figures highlight that Dubai’s hospitality industry is growing in tandem with the rise in tourism.

Dubai was buzzing with tourists in 2023, and guess what?

India took the lead, sending over 2.2 million eager explorers to the city!

They made up a whopping 12.83%(2,200,345) of all visitors.

Oman wasn’t far behind, with its army of adventurers making up 9.13%(1,565,795) of the crowd.

Saudi Arabia, who added their flair to the mix, accounted for 8.47%(1,452,605) of visitors.

The UK, Russia, and the US brought in their fair share of tourists too, adding to the vibrant tapestry of cultures.

The UK contributed 7.26%(1,245,090) of the total visitors, while Russia accounted for 5.28%(905,520)  and the US added 4.11%(704,865) to the total.  

Germany, France, Pakistan, and Iran all had their moments in the Dubai sun.

Germany’s tourists represented 2.94%(504,210) of the total, while France made up 2.53%(433,895).

Pakistan and Iran also played significant roles, with Pakistan contributing 2.48%(425,320) and Iran bringing in approximately 2.28%(391,020).

Additionally, a multitude of other countries collectively accounted for a substantial portion of Dubai’s tourist arrivals- 42.69%(7,321,335).

According to the research done by GMI Team , a total of 15.37 million people visited Dubai between January and November 2023.

Of all the countries, India contributed the highest number of visitors to Dubai in January-October 2023, with 2.0 million.

Dubai welcomed 8.55 million international visitors in the fiirst half of 2023.

Dubai’s total international visitors for Q1 2023 is 4.67 million.

According to GMI research Team, Dubai has seen a steady influx of international tourists over the past several years, except between 2019 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

While 16.73 million visitors came in 2019, the number drastically reduced to 7.28 million in 2021.

However, with the help of strict COVID guidelines and attractive marketing strategies, ‘safe’ travel was once again introduced to international visitors. Thus, by 2022, the number had again risen to 14.36 million.

According to Travel Medium , Dubai is the fourth most visited city in the world after Bangkok, Paris and London. Bangkok ranked first on the list, and has an average visitor count of more than 22 million.

Paris, the second most visited city in the world, attracts visitors with its classic buildings, arching Parisian bridges and elegant boulevards. The city has an average of 19.10 million visitors.

Renowned for its Gothic architecture, London is the 3rd most visited city in the world. The city attracts more than 19 million tourists.

With around 16 million international visitors, Dubai ranks fourth on the list. The city is popular for its highrises, mega-malls, and desert trips.

Singapore comes fifth on this list with around 15 million visitors. This green and innovative city is a tourist hotspot with its unique hawker centers, street markets and fine dining restaurants.

In 2015, the total number of international tourists accounted for 14.2 million. The figure rose gradually over four years, touching 16.73 million in 2019. When we take the region-wise distribution into account, from January to December 2021, Western Europeans dominated the tourist category with 22% of the total visitors. South Asians followed close with 18%. The third position was occupied by Eastern Europeans with 15%. While 13% of tourists were from the MENA and GCC region and 8% of tourists came from the African region.

UAE's Tourism Sector Thrives with Strong Performance Indicators in 2024

The tourism sector in the United Arab Emirates has witnessed a wave of recovery and growth since the beginning of the current year, highlighted by high-performance indicators in all aspects of the sector.

This bodes well for an exceptional tourist season, especially with a busy agenda of global events and major activities hosted by the country in the upcoming period.

The launch of the fourth edition of the “World’s Coolest Winter” campaign dominated the tourism scene in the country this week, which also saw significant achievements in the hotel and national transport sectors, reflecting their global excellence and leadership.

World’s Coolest Winter

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, launched the fourth edition of the “World’s Coolest Winter” campaign. He stated,

"The national tourism sector witnesses an annual growth. Our goal is to increase the sector’s contribution to GPD to reach AED450 billion by 2031.”

This year's campaign, under the theme "Unforgettable Stories" , highlights the key attractions in each emirate of the country. It provides full support to all visitors with diverse programmes and a calendar filled with events, reflecting the diversity of the UAE's environment, its tourism appeal, and its unique social and cultural identity.

Positive Indicators

The UAE's tourism sector achieved positive performance indicators, with hotel revenues in the country reaching AED32.2 billion during the period from January to September 2023, showing a growth rate of 27 percent compared to the same period in 2022. The number of hotel guests during the same period reached 20.2 million, marking a 12 percent growth compared to the same period in 2022. The hotel occupancy rate also reached 75 percent during the first 9 months of the past year, with a 6 percent growth compared to the same period in 2022.

Best Destination

Dubai was crowned the top global destination in the 2024 Travelers' Choice Awards by "TripAdvisor", the world's largest travel platform, for the third consecutive year. This is the first time the city has achieved this significant accomplishment.

The winners of these awards are selected in a unique way, where millions of travelers from around the world provide their independent reviews and opinions on various destinations, activities, and experiences offered.

National Airlines

During the past year, Emirates Airlines operated more than 164,400 flights to around 150 destinations, constituting 20 percent of the total number of flights operated by airlines in the Middle East and Africa, reaching 819,150 flights.

The company ranked among the top 10 airlines in terms of punctuality in the Middle East and Africa last year, according to the monthly report issued by "Cirium", a specialised institution in airline and airport data.

On the other hand, Etihad Airways is launching new destinations in 2024, including Boston, becoming its fourth station in the United States, with 4 weekly flights starting from March 31. Additionally, it will commence flights to the Kenyan capital Nairobi on May 1.

The airline also added two new destinations in the Indian subcontinent since the beginning of the new year: Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram in the Kerala region of India. This brings the total number of stations in India to 10. Etihad Airways plans to increase the number of flights to destinations such as Cairo, with a weekly total of 21 flights, Colombo with 7 flights, Islamabad with 14 flights, and the Maldives with 14 flights.

Meanwhile, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi expects to achieve a 30 percent growth in the number of passengers and operational capacity for the year 2024, aiming to transport around 4 million passengers. This follows an exceptional performance last year, with a record growth of over 135 percent in both the number of passengers and operational capacity, reaching 3 million passengers.

1.22 million visitors

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) announced that the year 2023 was the best to date for tourism in the emirate, recording 1.22 million visitors. This is its highest number of visitors, representing an 8 percent increase from 2022, along with a significant annual rise of 24 percent in the number of international tourists.

The authority added that the increase in the number of international visitors was supported by over 2,200 activities on an international level, such as promotional offers, trade exhibitions, and media events.

Accessible Tourism

In Dubai, the 4th Accessible Travel and Tourism International Conference focused on ways to make cities more inclusive and integrated for people with disabilities. The UAE aims to become the most accessible tourist destination, implementing effective strategic initiatives to enhance the country's achievements in the field of accessible tourism.

The number of travelers with disabilities is estimated to be around 1.3 billion, accounting for approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide, in addition to the elderly, whose number is estimated at around 800 million individuals aged over sixty.

Events and Festivals

The current week witnessed a series of events and festivals that attracted participants and visitors from both within and outside the country. Among the highlights is the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wathba, where its heritage, cultural, and entertainment activities continue amidst a noticeable attendance of the public. Additionally, the 29th edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival, which concludes its events the day after tomorrow, and the Dubai Crown Prince Camel Racing Festival 2024 held at the Marmoom Racetrack, organised by the Dubai Camel Racing Club. Furthermore, the second edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit 2024 took place in Dubai, with the participation of 7,000 guests.

Dubai welcomes 3.67 million overnight visitors in Jan-Feb 2024

D UBAI, 5th April, 2024 (WAM) -- Dubai welcomed 3.67 million overnight visitors in January-February 2024, with an increase of over 18 percent year-on-year (YoY), figures released by Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) showed.

According to the DET's Tourism Performance Report for January-February 2024, Dubai recorded 1.77 million international visitors in January, and 1.9 million in February.

Among the origin of visitors, Europe led the list for the January-February 2024 period with 773,000 tourists (21 percent). South Asia came in second with 604,000 visitors (17 percent) of the total, followed by Gulf Cooperation Council countries with 549,000 (15 percent).

Coming in fourth, the number of tourists visiting Dubai from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Eastern Europe reached 530,000 (14 percent), compared to 448,000 (12 percent) from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, which landed in fifth. Meanwhile, Dubai recorded 340,000 visitors (9 percent) from North and Southeast Asia; 240,000 (7 percent) from the Americas; 138,000 (4 percent) from Africa and 53,000 from Australia, which accounted for around 1 percent.

The report also showed an increase in the number of available hotel rooms from 148,450 distributed across 813 establishments in January-February 2023 to 151,269 across 826 establishments in the same period of 2024. The average occupancy rate settled at 87 percent, a 3 percent growth YoY.

Occupied room nights rose to 7.78 million compared to 7.28 in the same period of last year, with the average length of stay being 3.8 nights in January-February 2024.

Celebrating football and basketball, the emirate's newest leisure spot is home to more than 40 original experiences and attractions — including the region’s first wooden roller coaster and tallest amusement ride in the world.

From visiting the locker rooms of Real Madrid players and exploring the secret sanctuary guarding the club’s winning trophies to enjoying thrilling attractions, guests are in for an epic adventure.

Tickets can be bought at the gate or online at www.dubaiparksandresorts.com, with prices starting at Dh295.

"The world’s first and only Real Madrid-theme park celebrates the world’s love for sports and theme parks, presenting a unique adventure that has never been done or seen before. Real Madrid World will showcase the winning spirit of Real Madrid, embodying the deep passion that brings the club to life," said Fernando Eiroa, CEO at Dubai Holding Entertainment.

What's in store for you

Here are some of the must-try rides at the theme park:

• Hala Madrid Coaster: The region’s first wooden roller coaster that encapsulates the emotions of the Real Madrid journey with the European Cups
• The Star Flyer: Welcomes fans to walk among the past and present football and basketball legends taking memorable photos to last a lifetime
• The Wave - La Ola: A thrilling family roller coaster that will transport guests to the sacred seats of a stadium and embrace loyal fans who stand up, cheering their lungs out for their favourite team
• The Stars Flyer: Standing at 460ft, it is the tallest amusement ride in the world and an iconic and adrenaline-pumping ride dedicated to the Real Madrid stars
• Bernabéu Experience: A theatrical interpretation providing fans with exclusive access to the locker room, the centre of the pitch and a secret sanctuary guarding the 14 football European cups and the 11 Basketball European Cups – the sacred spaces within the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, Spain
• La Fabrica Training Pitch: A playground for guests of all ages with lots of football balls and mini-training equipment for the children, to practice their best shots and train like the stars.

Real Madrid World is located within Dubai Parks and Resorts in Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road, opposite Palm Jebel Ali and is only 20 minutes from Dubai Marina. The destination is accessible by car from Dubai on the E11 Highway (Sheikh Zayed Road) by taking exit 5. Guests can also use the RTA bus services that depart daily from the Ibn Battuta Metro Station.

Spice of Life: Discipline drives Dubai as tourism destination

The place that was once known for petroleum products has now become a tourist destination because of the administration matching pace with the needs and desires of modern-day travellers.

Though one had heard about Dubai diversifying into a place of tourist attraction in recent years, I was eager to have a first-hand experience. An opportunity came up earlier this year for a family vacation in the desert nation.

At the immigration, we were handed over a local SIM card for use during our stay in the United Arab Emirates. On the way to the hotel, we were spellbound to see rows after rows of pink and bright red petunias along the world-class encroachment-free roads. Intersections were replete with greenery and flowers in bloom. A closer look revealed that all plants were watered with the drip-irrigation technique. Not a single drop was being wasted in the water-deficient country.

Dubai’s Miracle Garden, the world’s largest natural flower garden, is a must-visit wonder. Petunias, chrysanthemums, sunflowers, pansies and marigolds vie with one another to create a mesmerising paradise on earth. With over 50 million flowers and spread over 72,000 square metres, it’s a perfect tribute to Mother Nature by diligent horticulturists in the hot and arid land.

Dune-bashing, popularly known as sand safari, is another popular tourist attraction in the UAE. Speeding over sand dunes in a Land Cruiser with a skilful driver at the wheels provides many a heart-in-the-mouth moments. Museum of the Future, Ferrari World, Sky Views Observatory, Global Village Theme Park, Atlantis Aquaventure, and towering above all, the Burj Khalifa, attract hordes of tourists to Dubai.

Though predominantly a desert country, the beaches present a paradisiacal look. Spic and span, devoid of persuasive vendors, broken bottles, and stray dogs, the maintenance speaks volumes about the management skills of the authorities. Whether it’s the cycling or jogging tracks or the beach itself, the ever-alert lifeguards, equipped with surfing boards, ensure tourists spend quality time along the sea without an iota of worry on their minds.

During my brief stay in the UAE, I noticed another point worth mentioning. Except the roads, none of the airports, bus or metro stations or places of tourist attraction were named after political or prominent personalities. The airport is simply Dubai airport or Sharjah airport. Miracle Garden is simply a miracle garden. Science city is named as such; as simple as that. At Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, it was heartening to note that LED screens installed at vantage points displayed the names and pictures of workers and engineers who contributed to creating the marvel. These included skilled and unskilled workers from the Indian subcontinent, too.

On our way to Sharjah airport to catch the return flight, a friendly driver from Sargodha, Pakistan, shared his thoughts, saying: “Janaab ehna di tarakki da ik hi raaz hai (Sir, there’s only one secret of their development): Discipline.” I couldn’t agree more.

From Japan’s e-visa to Dubai’s 5-year tourist visa, here are the latest visa updates for Indian travellers

Latest Visa Updates for Indian Tourists:  As the summer holiday season is just around the corner, it’s crucial to start planning one’s travel itinerary to ensure a memorable and stress-free vacation. As per the Henley Passport Index 2024 , India is ranked 80th. Indians get visa-free access to 62 countries.

From eVisas introduced by Japan to Dubai’s multiple entry five-year visa, in recent months, there have been new visa regulations in various countries across the globe for India, and being well-versed in the latest visa requirements will ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience and making informed decisions.

Here is a complete list of the latest visa updates every Indian traveller should know.

1. japan’s e-visa:.

Japan has introduced an eVisa system for Indian travellers, making it easier and more convenient to visit the country. Starting in April, eligible Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India can apply for an eVisa for short-term tourism purposes through the application process operated by VFS Global. Now, instead of physical stickers in passports, visas will be issued electronically and would offer a single-entry option, allowing stays up to 90 days.

2. Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia’s Schengen visa:

Becoming the recent EU nations to join Europe’s Schengen travel area, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa  to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means that Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, allowing stays of up to 90 days within 180 days.

3. Dubai’s five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa:

Dubai introduced a new visa program tailored to Indian travellers in February, which offers a five-year, multiple-entry option, allowing stays of up to 90 days in the country, with the possibility of a single extension not exceeding 180 days annually, for both business and leisure trips, with unlimited entries and exits within five years.

4. Thailand’s visa-free entry:

The Thai Government has introduced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders, enabling them to enter Thailand without a tourist visa from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024, with an exemption granting a 30-day stay for tourism purposes.

5. Kenya to eliminate visa requirements:

Starting from January 1, 2024, Kenya has abolished visa requirements for Indian citizens and all international tourists, to boost its tourism industry. This decision aims to provide easier access to Kenya’s rich wildlife and beautiful beaches, encouraging more visitors to explore the country’s unique attractions.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum becomes the Ruler of Dubai, as well as the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

The Burj Khalifa becomes the tallest building in the world, soaring 828m high and welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

The UAE is gearing up to celebrate the 50 th year of the Union and host Expo 2020 from 1 October 2021 to 31 March, 2022.
