LNER is proud to celebrate five years since its world-class Azuma trains entered service across its East Coast route between the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire and London King’s Cross.
Azuma services launched on 15th May 2019 with the inaugural journey from London King’s Cross to Leeds.
Since then, tens of millions of customers have travelled on the trains which continue to set new, higher standards in comfort, reliability and customer experience.
During the five years, LNER’s fleet of 65 Azuma trains have clocked up more than 58-million miles – equivalent to travelling the circumference of Earth over 2,000 times.
LNER’s annual carbon emissions from its train services have reduced by over half – 51 per cent, while annual diesel consumption has reduced by more than 25 million litres – an 84 per cent reduction.
LNER has introduced several named liveried trains to the fleet. The first, named ‘Century’, celebrates LNER’s people and pioneering approach, marking the centenary of the LNER brand in 2023.
‘Century’ was soon joined by ‘Together’ celebrating LNER’s support of Pride activities on its route, and ‘You Belong’ which marked the train operator’s five-year partnership with suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
The latest named train ‘Eleanor’, inspired by LNER’s new advertising campaign and mascot, launched earlier this year.
All the special liveried trains are proving popular, capturing the attention of customers – young and old – as they travel the route.
Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, said: “The launch of Azuma five years ago was a monumental milestone for LNER, and a monumental moment for rail travel and rail engineering. Our Azuma trains are one of the most sustainable ways to travel. We are proud to have taken tens of millions of passengers to their destinations over the last five years. Whether their journey is for business, a trip to see friends and family, a holiday, or a day trip to remember, we help connect our towns, cities, and communities.”
“We continue to work closely with our maintainer, Hitachi, to ensure our customers enjoy the best possible experience while travelling onboard.”
Customers will also be able to join the celebrations with special limited-edition packs of birthday jellybeans being shared onboard on 15th May 2024 to mark the occasion.

This includes the annual “Macao・Creative City of Gastronomy” meeting, which was only paused in 2022 due to the pandemic, and the submission of its first four-year monitoring report in 2021.
This year, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is taking significant strides to further Macao’s role as a Creative City of Gastronomy in line with its established plan. This includes engaging in collaborative and educational events with other UCCN member cities. A major upcoming event is the “Celebrations of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR – International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao,” set for mid-June 2024. This inaugural fest will feature an exciting gathering of gastronomic cities from around the world, showcasing global culinary cultures and highlighting Macao’s unique blend of tourism and gastronomy.
Since its foundation in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network has grown rapidly, now encompassing seven creative fields and including 56 Cities of Gastronomy globally. China boasts the most cities in this category, with six members including Chengdu, Shunde, Macao, Yangzhou, Huai’an, and Chaozhou.

The Top World Tourism and Travel Exhibitions in 2024
- May 4, 2024
Do you want to know the most important World Tourism and Travel Exhibitions in 2024? Find out more in this post.
Even if we live in the age of social networks, where it seems that human relationships are now entirely managed via the Internet, we should never underestimate the importance of human relations, even when talking about the Blogging and Tourism industries.
But how can a Blogger get in touch, meet potential partners, and find new collaboration opportunities? Participating in one of the many Tourism and Travel Exhibitions.
Unfortunately, I understood this after spending a long time writing dozens and dozens of e-mails to various tourism bureaus and travel agencies, all of which went regularly unanswered. Eventually, after asking several other bloggers for some suggestions, they all gave me the same answer: It’s important to personally get to know other people working in the same industry or, in a word, networking.
After clarifying this aspect, the second question is: which Tourism and Travel Exhibitions is best to attend? If you check the site world-tourism-exhibitions.com , you will find a huge list of more or less important exhibitions. The answer to the question is: it depends. It depends on many things.
Attending all the exhibitions, even the most important ones, is impossible because they are held worldwide. As I see it, attending at least one or two is a good option.

How to get ready before attending Tourism and Travel Exhibitions?
I don’t think there is any need to specify that you need to be prepared before attending these events. Tourism Exhibitions are huge, and you’ll waste your time if you don’t have clear goals. Depending on your niche, whether it’s low-cost travel, luxury travel, Asia, or anything else, focus on your strengths.
Don’t waste your time contacting those who deal with luxury travel if your blog has to do with backpacking (this is one of the reasons why it’s always better to avoid creating sites with names linked to the low-cost travel unless you do a total rebranding, you can only collaborate with those who arrange low-cost trips!).
One of the first things you will be asked will be some numbers about your blog and social networks, including audience reach, audience interests, etc… Where do your readers come from? What’s the average age? Prepare all the info you’ll need before attending the fair. Try to be as professional as possible.
This is a good article that explains what people working in the industry are looking for. I recommend that you read it. Also, remember to be patient, smile, and be friendly. Don’t forget paper, a pen, and comfortable shoes. You’ll walk a lot!

Travel & Tourism trade fairs continues to surprise…
At Arabian Travel Market 2024, Alain St.Ange experienced unprecedented service from Global Travel Organisation, highlighting the dynamic capabilities of travel fairs in adapting to visitor needs.
Travel & Tourism τrade φairs open the doors for many tourism destinations, airlines, and a range of tourism support services to showcase themselves to the trade and to the public. This remains the mission behind these Travel & Tourism Trade Fairs. Offers fall from everywhere and after years of attending these events little can surprise regular participants.
But at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024 Alain St.Ange , the Head of his Saint Ange Tourism Consultancy spoke about being taken by surprise by the Global Travel Organisation of the UK.
“I discussed with Mohamed Zaazaa , the CEO of Global Travel Organisation (GTO) that I was heading to the UK after ATM and needed his advice on the best way to get from London to Oxford where I am expected to be for an event. To my total surprise as he was explaining his services to me to managed to pull out a travel itinerary for me for my London trip and went as far as booking the train ticket their and then as he offered me a trial membership of his organisation. By the time our meeting ended I had the train ticket for my London – Oxford trip and my membership card. It was good to see the trade rise to new heights as I said I was impressed by his efficiency” said Alain St.Ange at ATM.
Travel & Tourism Fairs can still press even veterans as was this case at ATM in Dubai.

Sri Lanka Tourism returns to overseas trade show floors
Sri Lankan tourism officials will resume attending physical overseas trade exhibitions and fairs, kicking off with Moscow’s three-day International Trade Fair for Tourism and Travel starting today (September 7).
Sri Lanka has been represented only virtually at these fairs over the past 18 months, after the Covid-19 pandemic restricted global travel.
Officials of state-run Sri Lanka Tourism (SLT) said about 13 Sri Lankan companies are participating in the Moscow fair, with the delegation including tourism minister Prassanna Ranatunga and SLT chairperson Kirmali Fernando, both of whom will also be attending a travel show in Ukraine thereafter.
Plans are also underway to send delegations to attend the IFTM fair in France (October 5-8) and the World Travel Mart (November 1-3) in the UK, but vaccination requirements in host countries could pose a stumbling block, officials said.
While about 10 companies have already confirmed their participation at the IFTM fair, officials say that there are entry issues since France, for example, has not approved the Sinopharm vaccine which has been the most widely-administered Covid-19 vaccine in Sri Lanka.
They added that in the case that entry is not permitted, overseas representatives of these companies along with officials from the Sri Lankan embassy will represent the country instead.
Chandra Wickramasinghe, hotelier and chairman of travel firm Connaisance De Ceylon, stressed on the importance of a physical presence at international trade shows. “Travel fairs have a major influence on tourism destinations,” he said.
Nalin Jayasundere, managing director of Aitken Spence Travels, Sri Lanka’s biggest inbound travel agency, said it was important to attend these fairs for marketing purposes.
Sri Lanka’s physical presence at travel trade fairs comes at a time when the industry is hoping for tourism to recover by the coming winter season by which time 75 per cent of those aged above 30 in the country would have been fully vaccinated.
Air France and Swiss carrier Edelweiss have announced plans to restart flights to Sri Lanka in November.
Meanwhile, health authorities said on Sunday that fully vaccinated tourists will be permitted to visit places of interest across the island and patronise restaurants amid a nationwide lockdown enforced since August 20. The initial 10-day lockdown has been extended twice, and is due to end on September 13.

How to live a more Fair Trade lifestyle
Posted: May 14, 2024 | Last updated: May 14, 2024
Most people will have seen "Fair Trade" emblazoned on everything from bananas and coffee to clothes , but not everybody stops to think about the significance of the term. Far from being a marketing gimmick to bump up prices, fair trade products can impact on the entire planet by addressing issues such as child labor, modern slavery, and climate change.
Are you interested in making a difference? Indeed, there's no need to spend a fortune or overhaul your entire lifestyle: small changes can make a big impact. Keen to do your bit? Then click through this gallery to discover how you can live a more fair trade lifestyle.

What is fair trade?
Fair trade applies to commercial operations that aim to support and improve the quality of life of workers and producers, as well as protecting the environment.

A fair wage
This often involves establishing direct links between small-scale producers in developing countries, and fair trade organizations (FTOs) in Western countries.

Spotlight on global injustices
Fair trade organizations work to shed spotlight on unjust international trade practices, highlighting problems such as child labor and insufficient pay.
A global concern
Modern-day fair trade practices were shaped in the years following World War II, and the fair trade movement has consistently gained attention and support over the decades, helping entire countries and communities in the process.

What's in a name?
The words "fair trade" and "Fairtrade" don't mean exactly the same thing. The Fairtrade logo can only be used by organizations, brands, and products that are part of the Fairtrade International system and adhere to its rules and values.
Look for the logo
"Fair trade" is not a protected term, and almost any seller could apply it to their products. If in doubt, look for the globally-recognized Fairtrade logo.

Other certifications
In the US, Fair Trade USA certifies products according to criteria including eco-friendly practices. Fair Trade America is another reputable source of certification.
Food for thought
Most people associate fair trade products with imports such as coffee, sugar, and bananas, but it's a more wide-reaching term that can cover everything from your morning caffeine boost to your clothing, beauty, and fashion choices.

Who benefits?
Fair trade principles don't only cover wages–the movement also works to ensure safe working conditions, no forced labor or child labor, and the elimination of harmful chemicals.
Where does your coffee come from?
Global economic conditions might not be the first thing on your mind when you reach for that all-important morning coffee, but your newly-conscious lifestyle should begin at breakfast: check the label to make sure your coffee gets the fair trade seal of approval.

What's the tea?
If you're more of a tea person than a coffee person, the same rules apply. Workers and producers on many tea plantations in India, East Africa, and other tea-producing regions often work long hours for unfairly low wages.
Spilling the tea
Ethical tea companies such as Clipper (the UK's first Fairtrade tea company in 1994) ensure a fair deal for pickers and producers, so you can sip your tea with a clear conscience.

Sugar supplies
Take sugar in your tea or coffee? You should be checking that it's fair trade, too. Reputable fair trade organizations will work with small-scale sugar cane farmers to ensure they are not exploited physically or financially.
Seafood ethics
Documentaries such as 'Seaspiracy' (2021) have shone a harsh light on the international seafood industry, and 'seafood slavery' is an all-too-real issue. Try to buy locally-sourced, sustainable fish from small, independent vendors.
You may also like: Warning signs to look out for if you are over 40
Check before you buy
It doesn't have to take a huge amount of money to make sure you know where the contents of your food cupboards are coming from. Support small local vendors at fresh produce markets, and look for fair trade credentials on imports and packaged food.
Ask about ingredients
There's no need to stop at your own supplies, either. When ordering takeout, ask about the origins of your food. Asking about fair trade ingredients can encourage your favorite local delivery place to take it seriously.

Ethical buying is beautiful
Fair trade doesn't stop at food and drinks. In tandem with a rise in organic and vegan beauty and skin care products, recent years have seen the industry embrace fair trade ethics.
Ask for more
Increased demand leads to increase supply. If your favorite beauty brands don't display fair trade credentials, it's worth contacting them to ask why not–especially if they make use of farmed ingredients such as sugar and coconut oil.

Clothing considerations
Look at your clothing labels, too. ' Fast fashion ' has been shown to be hugely detrimental to the planet and to workers, so look for fair trade certification, or, better still, buy from independent local producers.
What are you wearing?
The temptation to hit the high street (or the internet) with credit card in hand can be strong, but the true cost to people and planet should make you think twice. Your retail therapy will feel all the better if you seek out thrift stores, charity shops, and small local stores stocking their own designs.

Let's drink to that!
Fair trade wine is another growth area, and you might be surprised by the range of options at your supermarket or wine shop. If you're lucky enough to have local wineries, don't be afraid to ask about their production practices.
Involve the family
Encourage family members to make fair trade a priority, too. Challenge the family to help you regularly cook meals using only fair trade sources, and see if they think it tastes better!

Look at a map
It might sound simple, but looking at a map to see where your food, drinks, and clothing come from can make you think. Considering lifestyles and working practices in those countries might make you reconsider buying non-fair trade options.
Fair trade travel
Your fair trade principals can be applied to thinking about your next break, too. It can be as simple as booking a small, family-run guest house and using independent local tour operators.
You may also like: How often you should be washing these everyday items
Do your homework
If you decide to book a guest house or bed and breakfast, do your research ahead of time and ask if they will supply fair trade food and drinks at breakfast. Your socially-conscious coffee doesn't have to stop at home!
Fair trade tourism
Some countries in Africa, Asia, Central America, and South America offer designated fair trade breaks, which consider eco-friendly credentials as well as impact on local communities.

Research, research, research
It's much easier to buy a guaranteed fair trade banana than to ensure your travel plans will be genuinely beneficial to a country or community. If a vacation is branded as 'fair trade,' be sure to find out what that means in practice.
Read all about it
To take a deeper dive into the world of fair trade, you might want to look into some of the books on the subject. John Bowes' 'The Fair Trade Revolution' might make it to the top of your reading list.

Spread the word
Ultimately, fair trade principles aim to make the world a fairer place for everybody, while protecting our global environment. Don't be afraid to boast about your positive lifestyle choices–it might just encourage others to get on board!

Travel firms remain hungry for visitors

HANOI: Domestic travel firms are still hungry for visitors, despite the significant increase in foreign travellers to Vietam.
According to tourism experts, a large number of foreign visitors do not book package tours or rarely use services provided by travel agencies except small-value ones.
That results in the low profitability of Vietnamese travel agencies.
Vo Viet Hoa, director of the Outbound Tourism Division of Saigontourist Travel Services, said statistics indicated a rise in South Korean visitors to Vietnam.
However, Vietnamese businesses have yet to benefit from this surge because they fail to provide comprehensive package services.
For example, Saigontourist only offers car rental services, which is referred to as a ‘difficult’ segment.
Regarding Japanese tourists, they are tightening their budgets, and Vietnam is not their top-choice destination.
Similarly, Chinese tourists are shifting away from South-East Asian countries, including Vietnam, in their travel preferences, Hoa said.
The current visa policy is already quite relaxed but should be made even more appealing.
Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore have waived visas for Chinese tourists, so Hoa said Vietnam should have similar visa exemption policies for tourists from key markets.
Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, Vu The Binh, said while the overall numbers are rising, a significant increase in tour bookings has not been seen.
Binh said Vietnam has all the conditions in terms of natural resources, environment and other factors to develop tourism, but this sector has failed to progress fully.
In the last two decades, South Korean and Japanese tourists have pursued their distinct preferences, while there has been a moderate resurgence in Chinese visitors, though not substantial.
Affordable tours for Chinese tourists have made a comeback.
Binh added that many localities that host festivals are confused between attracting domestic and international visitors.
Foreign travellers do not have enough time and attention to participate in festivals that localities are organising them everywhere, therefore, it is necessary to have a national tourism promotion strategy.
At the same time, localities need to set aside funds to carry out promotion campaigns under that strategy to attract international visitors, Binh said.
Meanwhile, Hoa suggested the launch of tourism promotion offices in Europe, the Americas, Asean and China.
These offices would help better promote the country’s hospitality sector and attract international visitors to Vietnam, he said.
The country’s tourism sector served over 6.2 million foreign visitors and 40.5 million domestic tourists over the first four months of this year, earning 271.4 trillion yen in revenue, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
The number of international visitors increased by 68.3% over the same period in 2023, statistics showed.
South Korea remained the largest foreign tourist source with 1.6 million arrivals, accounting for 25.8% of the total international arrivals in Vietnam.
It was followed by mainland China, Taiwan, the United States and Japan.
The number of Asians coming to Vietnam soared 77.2% year-on-year, making Asia the leading regional source of visitors.
At the same time, tourists numbers from Europe continued to rise strongly thanks to the favourable visa policy applied since August 15, 2023, including such main markets as the United Kingdom (35.2%), France (41.7%), Germany (36.9%), Italy (77.4%), Spain (48.5%) and Russia (74%). — Viet Nam News/ANN

Australian federal budget 2024: what we know so far and what to expect
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has promised more cost-of-living relief in his 14 May budget as well as spending for students and health

On 14 May the treasurer, Jim Chalmers, will deliver his second full-year budget.
Chalmers has promised more cost-of-living relief in a budget that he says tackles inflation but sets Australia’s economy up for growth – neither scorched-earth nor a free-for-all of spending .
Here’s what we know already about what is in the budget.
Tax cuts and cost of living
The biggest element of the cost-of-living relief in the budget is the changes to stage-three tax cuts, a $359bn 10-year tax cut package announced by Labor in January and legislated in February with opposition support.
The package means all Australian taxpayers (earning over the tax-free threshold of $18,200) get a tax cut, doubling the benefit for an average income earner compared with the Coalition’s original stage three proposal.
Labor says 84% of taxpayers are better off under its proposal, although those earning more than $146,486 would have received more under the Coalition’s model.
There will be other cost-of-living measures the government claims won’t add to inflation, which might point towards extending energy price relief .
Jim Chalmers has poured cold water on the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee’s call for jobseeker to rise to 90% of the age pension, although he and the finance minister, Katy Gallagher, have seemed more open on increasing rent assistance. Chalmers has confirmed there will be “additional steps” on poverty reduction and “new initiatives for housing”.
Education, skills and Hecs
The government will wipe $3bn from student debts by indexing Hecs and Help debts to the lower of the consumer price index or the wage price index, backdated to June 2023.
The government will also pay student teachers, nurses, midwives and social workers $320 a week during their mandatory work placements , starting from July 2025. These two measures are aspects of the government’s response to the Universities Accord, but there will be more in the budget.

The government has announced $90.6m to boost the number of skilled workers in the construction and housing sector, creating 15,000 fee-free Tafe places and 5,000 places for pre-apprenticeships.
School funding will also rise as the federal government negotiates with the states to cover the 5% funding gap, most recently offering to lift its share of funding from 20% to 22.5%. This is estimated to cost $6bn over five years, although Chalmers has been coy about whether estimates will be reflected in the budget or only be added after education and health agreements are finalised.
There is no question childcare workers will be receiving a pay rise in this budget – the only questions are how much and how it will be distributed. With the industry in crisis due to staffing shortages, which have been exacerbated by staff leaving to work in aged care after that sector’s pay rise win , the government is expected to make wage increases for childcare workers a centre piece of the budget.
But it’s unclear whether the government will pull the trigger on scrapping the activity test, which sets a subsidy rate based on employment. It has indicated it wants to get rid of the measure as part of its plan to make childcare in Australia “universal”, though it’s not clear whether it will happen in this budget.
Health and aged care
Public hospitals are expected to get more funding, as the federal government works to finalise a new five-year agreement with the states to start in mid-2025. The commonwealth has reportedly offered to lift funding by an extra $4bn in 2025-26 and $13bn over the whole five years.
The government is also increasing funding for its medical research future fund over 13 years, with $1.1bn for existing projects plus $150m million to investigate rarely survived cancers, and $150m towards reducing inequalities in the health system. A further $500m will go to other research schemes.
The government is also yet to outline its response to March’s aged care taskforce report , which suggested new ways to pay for the system – including asking Australians with more wealth to pay more for the cost of their care.
The health minister, Mark Butler, also announced $49.1m would go toward offering longer consultations of 45 minutes or longer for endometriosis sufferers.
Among a total of $15.4bn in “unavoidable spending” to continue programs from the previous government is money set aside for palliative care, cancer supports, public health chronic conditions, and alcohol and other drug treatments.
Defence and foreign affairs
The budget will confirm that Australia’s defence spending will increase from 2.1% of Australia’s economic output next financial year to 2.4% by 2033-34, driven by a range of big-spending projects including the Aukus nuclear-powered submarines.
There will be some cuts to programs, however, with the government announcing last month that it would free up about $73bn over 10 years by cutting, delaying or changing the scope of some defence projects.
Even after these cuts are taken into account, the government says it has committed a net increase of $50.3bn for defence over the next 10 years. This includes a net increase of $5.7bn over the immediate four-year budget cycle.
This immediate funding includes $1bn over the next four years for long-range strike, targeting and autonomous systems.
In foreign affairs, the government has promised $492m for the Asian Development Fund’s 2025-28 pledging round, to “help respond to the needs of the region and deliver transformative development projects across the Indo-Pacific”.
Infrastructure
So far, western Sydney is the biggest winner in infrastructure after the minister, Catherine King, announced $1.9bn in funding for 14 road and transport projects. Those include road upgrades, planning projects and extra money for a business case to extend the train line into the city’s south-west.
Cyclists will also get a boost with $100m being set aside to build and upgrade bicycle and walking lines in cities and regional centres.
Canberra will also get a $50m injection to extend its light rail line from the northern suburbs past Parliament House and into the city’s south.
The nation’s capital are getting a good deal because $249.7m has also been announced for Australian Institute of Sport as the 2032 Brisbane Olympics inches closer.
The quarter of a billion-dollar sum will go towards refreshing the ageing site with new accommodation, an all-weather sports dome and a new training centre.
Beyond Canberra, road safety data from the states and territories will also be better harmonised with a $21m funding announcement to set up a national data hub.
Future Made in Australia
The government has announced funding for a range of projects under its Future Made in Australia policy, which aims to directly support Australian industry and innovation, particularly in green energy. These commitments include:
$1bn for the Solar Sunshot production of solar panels in the Hunter
$1bn to PsiQuantum to build the world’s first fault tolerant quantum computer in Brisbane
$840m for Arafura’s rare earth metals production in the Northern Territory
An export agreement to sell armoured vehicles made by the German defence manufacturer Rheinmetall
$566m over 10 years for GeoScience Australia to map what is under Australia’s soil and seabed
$400m in new loans to Alpha HPA for Australia’s first high-purity alumina processing facility in Queensland; and
$185m to Renascor Resources to fast-track the development of stage one of its Siviour Graphite Project in South Australia; and
$100m to speed up environmental approvals, including assistance for business.
Gender equality
The government has committed $925m for the leaving violence payment, a payment of $5,000 to help meet the costs of leaving a relationship. The existing trial will be extended and the new permanent program available from mid-2025.
The government has also said that parents will receive 12% superannuation – or about $106 a week – on their publicly funded paid parental leave from July 2025, full costings for which will be in the budget.
Indigenous affairs
The government has not foreshadowed any new major spending commitments in the Indigenous affairs space, but the budget will contain details and funding for several large programs in that portfolio that were recently unveiled.
The Closing The Gap commitments from February, including a $700m remote jobs program, and March’s announcement of a $4bn remote housing program for the Northern Territory, are expected to be the major components of the Indigenous affairs portfolio. Most of the new commitments in Indigenous affairs are typically contained in February’s Closing The Gap document rather than the May budget.
Attorney General’s Department
The government has pledged $161.3m to establish the national firearms register , and $11m for an app alerting Australians in real time if somebody tries to use their data to commit fraud.
The government will invest $166.4m to implement reforms to Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regime.
