How to take a belfast day trip from dublin (2024).

Belfast day trip from Dublin

It’s time to switch up the scene from Dublin and dive into a fresh landscape without straying too far from Ireland’s shores. While Dublin offers its own unique charm, the island of Ireland is a mosaic of cultures and histories. That’s why I recommend heading north to go on a Belfast day trip from Dublin, where, fun fact, you’ll suddenly be in a new country even though you’re on the same island!

Belfast is the vibrant capital of Northern Ireland and was one of the cities I visited on my first trip to Ireland way back in 2015 on my honeymoon. While it doesn’t get as much love as Dublin, it’s definitely worth a visit, even if just for one day. From driving along the Antrim Coast to exploring a part of the United Kingdom (as Northern Ireland is officially in the U.K.), you’ll love taking a day trip from Dublin to Belfast.

Wondering if Belfast should make the cut in your travel plans? The city is closer to Dublin than you’d think, making it a great day trip option when you want to get out of Dublin. This guide will show you the different ways to visit Belfast from Dublin, so you can choose which one is right for you. I’ll also list some of the best places to visit in Belfast, so taking your trip is easy, and you can just focus on exploring!

Heading from Dublin to Belfast isn’t just a geographical shift – it’s a transition between two dynamic worlds. As you contemplate this adventure, you’ll find a range of travel methods, each offering its own distinct flavor. Whether it’s the allure of rolling landscapes seen from a train window, the efficiency of a budget bus ride, or the luxury of a private tour, I’ll help you find the perfect transportation method.

Let’s look at some of the best Dublin to Belfast tours to get you started on your trip.

Flying into Dublin? Here are all the best ways to get from Dublin Airport to the city center .

Train Tours: The Scenic Route

For those who love beautiful views and comfort, train tours offer a perfect blend of both worlds. I always take the train when I’m in Europe if time allows because so rarely do I ever need to take a train in the States, and it’s always so relaxing.

Imagine gazing out of the window as you glide through the stunning Irish countryside, with green fields and cute little villages passing by. The direct train from Dublin to Belfast, also known as the Belfast train, takes just over 2 hours , making it a laidback, efficient way to travel between the two cities.

With stops at Connolly and Heuston stations in Dublin and Lanyon Place in Belfast, you’ll have easy access to the heart of both cities. To ensure a smooth journey, it’s a good idea to book your Belfast train tickets ahead of time so you can sit where you want on your Belfast day trip from Dublin, plus you’ll get the best ticket price on your journey.

Buy your Dublin to Belfast train tickets in advance to get the day and time you want.

Bus Tours: Budget-Friendly Exploration

Bus excursions are a fantastic option for individuals on a tighter budget who don’t want to miss out on any Dublin to Belfast tours. My husband studied abroad in Ireland and loved taking the bus all around the country, as it made traveling much more affordable for him at that time.

Taking a bus between Dublin and Belfast may take a little longer than taking the train, but you get to meet interesting people and hear their tales along the way (or you can always just plug those headphones in if that’s more your style).

Compared to train or private trips, the cost of Dublin to Belfast bus tours are more reasonable, and the guided experience, along with the opportunity to see the beautiful Irish countryside, are all added bonuses. If you want to see the sights of Northern Ireland but don’t want to spend too much money, a bus trip could be the way to go.

Here are some of the top-rated Dublin to Belfast day tours:

  • This day tour takes you to Giants Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Belfast , and more.
  • You can also go on this Giants Causeway and Belfast City bus tour .
  • You’ll love seeing the Titanic Experience along with Belfast city sights.

If you prefer taking the public bus and doing a self-guided tour, you can look up bus times in advance and buy tickets online .

Private Tours: Customized Experiences

Private excursions are perfect for those who want their Dublin to Belfast day trip to be as unique and adaptable as they are. You may make your trip as unique as you are by choosing to see the sights that most interest you and stopping anywhere you like along the way.

You can take private tours in the form of:

Walking tours

Bus excursions

Helicopter rides

Food and wine tours

Cultural experiences

Do your homework on the tour company, check reviews, and ask questions to make sure you get the most out of your Belfast day tour from Dublin private trip. Therefore, plan ahead to guarantee your spot and save money on your tailor-made excursion.

Here are some of the most popular private tours in Belfast:

  • You’ll love going in a private black taxi around the city to see the best sights.
  • History lovers will enjoy this private historical tour of Belfast .
  • I always love doing tours like a local to get an insider’s perspective.

You’ll love going on a 6 day trip to Ireland .

Rent a Car: Unlimited Freedom

Of course, you can always just take the Belfast to Dublin drive into your own hands, and rent a car for the day. I’ve done this multiple times (and the last time, I was in Ireland by myself, pregnant, and stuck in Belfast rush hour traffic, so trust me – if I can do it, you can do it!) and driving a rental car is much easier than you think.

In fact, I wrote a whole guide after that last trip to help others know how to drive in Ireland as a tourist .

Make sure to book your car rental in advance! I love using Discover Cars when I travel.

Belfast At Sunset

Between the two cities, Dublin and Belfast , lies a plethora of must-see landmarks that serve as a living testament to Northern Ireland’s rich culture and history. Natural treasures and cultural heritage abound in this area, from the impressive Giant’s Causeway to the majestic Dunluce Castle, built above craggy cliffs along the Antrim Coast that you’ll want to see on your Belfast trip from Dublin.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway attests to the grandeur and majesty of Mother Nature. This natural marvel, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption, is a sight to behold, with its roughly 40,000 interconnecting basalt columns.

A visit to the Giants Causeway will capture you with its beautiful scenery and intriguing legends, such as the one about the Irish giant who built the causeway so he could cross to Scotland.

Do one of the climbs that leads to a vantage point over the Giant’s Causeway so you can take in its full splendor. If you have time, I highly recommend visiting the adjacent Carrick-a-Rede Bridge , which was one of my favorite stops in Northern Ireland.

The Giant’s Causeway is a breathtaking natural wonder that boasts an intriguing history and otherworldly scenery and is one of the most popular day trips around Belfast .

Book your ticket from Giant’s Causeway from Belfast in advance.

Dunluce Castle

Dunlunce Castle Ireland

Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff overlooking the wild Atlantic Ocean, the 500-year-old ruins of Dunluce Castle offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. With a history steeped in violence, intrigue, and rebellion, this medieval castle has captured the imagination of visitors and has even served as a filming location for Game of Thrones .

Anyone interested in diving deeper into the castle’s fascinating past can do so by purchasing a ticket to visit Dunluce Castle, which gives them 45 minutes to tour the castle grounds and take in the gorgeous scenery. The ruins of the castle will take you back in time, and you may imagine the lives of those who once lived in this imposing structure.

I almost didn’t stop here on my last Belfast day trip from Dublin, but I had some extra time in my schedule during my 10-day Ireland trip and was glad I chose this.

Antrim Coast

antrim coast

The Antrim Coast is a hidden gem in Northern Ireland, boasting stunning cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint towns. Traveling down the shore, you’ll love the beautiful panoramas of both land and sea.

Balintoy Harbor, the Dark Hedges, and the Cushendun Caves are just a few of the iconic Game of Thrones filming locations that you can see as you travel down the Antrim Coast. The Antrim Coast is a beautiful place to visit, full of historic sites and scenic places to stop and stretch your legs.

Belfast - Titanic Experience

Titanic Quarter & Maritime Mile

Titanic Experience

tours dublin to belfast

On the way to Belfast we travel through the Boyne Valley. Your private driver / guide will tell you stories about the many historical events which occurred in this area of Meath over hundreds of years. One of the most famous is the battle of the Boyne which influenced the political and cultural history of Ireland for hundreds of years after. The Boyne Valley is also home to Newgrange Passage Tomb, a monument that is older than the pyramids .

Belfast City

Arriving in Belfast you will notice the difference between it and Dublin. Belfast was the only city in Ireland which experienced the Industrial Revolution of Britain during the 19th century.

At this point you have the option to take a tour or explore Belfast at your leisure.

The Titanic Quarter and Maritime Mile is one of Europe’s largest urban waterfront regeneration projects. Built to be unsinkable, the fate of Titanic is well known. Explore the underwater theatre and recreated decks and cabins of the ill-fated White Star liner on the Titanic Experience Tour.

The Titanic Experience in Belfast's' Titanic Quarter includes access to the nine interpretive galleries, full-scale reproductions, and the opportunity to walk in the shoes of those who built, served, and took passage on the ill-fated liner. This interactive experience exploring the origins of the tragic and legendary ship along with its passengers and crew in the city where she was built, is not one to be missed.

SS Nomadic Belfast & Hamilton Dock

Last remaining ship of the White Star Line

Dive into the seafaring past

Hamilton Dock

The SS Nomadic is the 105-year-old tender that served Titanic on her maiden voyage, transporting the first and second class passengers from the port of Cherbourg to Titanic. She was also involved with active service for both World Wars. SS Nomadic is the last remaining ship of the White Star Line in the world!

Luckily, she has now been restored and returned to Hamilton Dock at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast. Visitors now have the opportunity to step on board and get a sense of what life was like as a seafarer in the early 20th century. There are interactive displays, live storytelling and photos to help encapsulate the heritage and atmosphere. There are also costumes on board, providing a fun opportunity to dress up as passengers of the Titanic era - make sure to take a camera with you!

Black Taxi Tour

Learn About Belfast’s Troubled Political Past

Walk along the Peace Wall

tours dublin to belfast

While troubled times are consigned to the history books, people and places in Belfast City still reflect the tragedy and trauma of that period. These troubled times are still fresh in the minds of the majority of the two separate communities. Wild Rover Tours proudly offers a unique visitor experience. Immerse yourself deeply into the days before the fragile peace came to this region.

If you want to understand more about the political history of Belfast, there is no better way to do it than in a black taxi accompanied by a local driver . On a  Black Taxi Tour of Belfast  your local guide will bring you to both sides of the community and explain what Belfast was like during the ‘troubles’. They will explain the content of the murals on the Peace Wall and how people survived such a chaotic time. Please note that this Black Taxi Tour can also be done on foot if you prefer.

The Peace Wall

One truly memorable stop on the Black Taxi Tour lies along Falls Road and Shankill Road. Here a 5.5 metre – 17 .6 ft high concrete wall known locally and in political terminology as the peaceline . You will have the opportunity to sign the peace wall and have your pictures taken by your guide next to the murals and the wall.

You will also see the tale of troubles in the Belfast area and abroad told on the sides of buildings in the form of powerful murals.

  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ 3 weeks ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • Chang Liu ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago We did the Cliffs of Moher and Galway tour with Kiera and had the best time. Kiera was simply one of the best tour guides we’ve ever had! She explained the Irish history so thoroughly and clearly; she might as well be a history professor! She’s also very funny and so, so friendly. All the shops and restaurants she recommended in Galway were spot on. The tour’s organization was quite smooth and we can’t … More complain a thing. Highly recommend wild rover tours.
  • Sara Mouyass ★★★★★ a week ago Absolutely informative and lovely tour to the Cliffs of Moher! Both our driver and guide were really nice people, and respectful of our morning tiredness! Our guide, Yvonne, gave absolutely useful and historical info as well as fun stories/facts when that was needed. I'd recommend Wild Rover anytime if you'd like to spend an amazing journey across Ireland! 😊 Thank you!
  • Brenda Burrows ★★★★★ a week ago We went on the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic museum tour and can thoroughly recommend it. Great driver (Krishnan) and excellent tour guide (Una). Good mix of Irish history, folk lore and culture served up with humour and practical tips. Beautiful coastal scenery.
  • Michelle Calheiros ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago I went to Ireland in April '24 and booked two day tours leaving from Dublin; one to the Cliffs and another to Wicklow. Both tours were amazing, truly! I never really leave reviews but felt compelled to share my positive experience because I traveled solo and felt safe and entertained the entire time. I made friends on the trip and got to experience some amazing places, some really good food, and … More a lot of cool stories thanks to the guides. The day to Wicklow was with Liam, he was extremely funny and very passionate about the locations we visited. The day tour to the cliffs was with Ciara and Steven, both very helpful, fun, and professional. Overall, I had an amazing experience, and I would recommend Wild Rover to anyone looking to see Ireland and learn about the beautiful country while having a lot of fun.
  • Mary Norton ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago We truly enjoyed this tour! The driver and host were so knowledgeable and entertaining. The visit to Kilkenny was grand. The experience in the mountains, holy land and sheep farm were all beautiful and lovely! You need to do this tour!
  • Joshua ★★★★★ a month ago We found this trip well worth the price to experience and see some of "real" Ireland. Kilkenny was a great little city with plenty of shops, restaurants, and history to explore. Glendalough was such a fantastic time. From the history, to exploring the grounds, to the picturesque walk to the upper lake, it was perfect! The sheep farm was a great experience as well, the whole family enjoyed … More it! We were three adults, a 13 year old, a 5 year old, and a 2 year old. All enjoyed it and had fun! Tour operators Elisa and Peter were great!
  • Christina McElroy ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago We had the most amazing trip to the Cliffs with Yvonne and Steven. She was so funny and knowledgeable, I would follow her anywhere!! Such a wonderful tour and tour guide. Truly enjoyed our visit. Eventho it was foggy it was still beautiful 😍

The journey goes beyond the aftermath of the sinking, to the discovery of the wreck and continues into the present day with a live undersea exploration centre.

Gobbins Path and Visitor Centre

The original path at The Gobbins was opened in 1902, and immediately captivated visitors. The path was part of the vision of Berkeley Deane Wise, Chief Engineer of the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway Company, to use the recently expanded railway line to attract visitors to this spectacular part of Ireland. With the arrival of the steam train in the 19th century it became possible to move large amounts of people and goods in relatively short times. Not only did the railways turn cities like Belfast into industrial powerhouses, they opened up remote beauty spots to a new kind of industry - tourism.

The Gobbins path was Berkeley Deane Wise's final contribution to the tourism offering of the area. It was also his crowning glory.

Billy Connolly walking with a camera filming him in the film Big Banana Feet

Billy Connolly: Big Banana Feet review – proto-punk star comic at his 70s peak

Restored 1976 doc of Connolly’s tour of Ireland shows that, despite his bombastic stage presence, he is impeccably polite. But his naughtier material hasn’t aged well

H ere is a 70s time capsule as pungent as a brimming pub ashtray. Restored and rereleased, Big Banana Feet is the 1976 documentary about Billy Connolly’s live shows in Dublin and Belfast the year before, just after his appearance on the BBC’s Parkinson show made him a star virtually overnight, and allowed his legions of new fans to hear him live and unexpurgated.

Billy and his hangdog entourage – all looking like a very downbeat version of the Bay City Rollers – travel to Dublin then to Belfast by private plane, but aside from that, everything looks very non-luxury. The backstage areas have the air of a scout hut, and there don’t seem to be any riders with Jack Daniel’s, cocaine, only-green-coloured M&Ms, and the like – Connolly gets a pot of tea backstage so stewed it has to be poured like treacle.

The press gets an enormous amount of almost unmediated access to him, including a meet and greet before the show – despite his plaintive requests that this shouldn’t happen – and afterwards too. And the morning after his first big night at Dublin, he is prevailed upon to get up early for a radio show; he does it all with absolute politeness. The nearest Connolly gets to being annoyed in the entire film is when he realises his support act is playing a banjo, thus rather upstaging the bluegrass part of his own set.

Frankly, a lot of Connolly’s naughty material hasn’t aged very well and he got away with quite a lot of dross, perhaps because adult comedy was not a saturated mainstream market in those days. People were more used to the daring satire of Dave Allen, and in comparison Connolly was an innovator. Connolly certainly was proto-alternative and proto-punk, and these were febrile times. At the Dublin show, a heckler shouts “IRA!” and Connolly replies acidly: “I’d love to hear you say that at Ibrox [Rangers’ stadium in Glasgow] …!” It’s amazing, from this modern perspective, to experience again how sectarianism was a violent and normalised fact of life in the 70s.

In Belfast, Connolly prudently drops any material about the Troubles, perhaps because he simply and understandably doesn’t want to take the risk. When he arrives at Belfast airport, Connolly chats amiably to soldiers from 15th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, which he was once with as a Terrritorial Army reserve, and we hear his melancholy song about this on stage, Weekend Soldier‚ easily the best part of his show.

It is what Connolly says offstage that is now amusing, rather than his actual act. When he and his crew are at the airport, a voice over the tannoy requests a “Mr Jamaica”; Connolly ponders that it feels like a Mr Universe candidate is being paged. “And then a white skinny guy gets up!” He also explains how someone made his famous banana boots and this man said to him: “They’re not identical … but then bananas never are.” For a second, Connolly’s material sounds like Alan Bennett’s.

[  A million reasons why Bruce Springsteen keeps coming back to Ireland  ]

What songs will he play?

His setlists are inherently unpredictable as he can pick a song from placards held up by fans and play it. It certainly keeps the E Street Band on their toes. Here is what The Boss played on Sunday, May 5th, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium:

  • So Young and in Love
  • Lonesome Day
  • No Surrender
  • Prove It All Night
  • Darlington County
  • Better Days
  • The Promised Land
  • Spirit in the Night
  • Hungry Heart
  • If I Was the Priest
  • My City of Ruins
  • Last Man Standing
  • Backstreets
  • Because the Night
  • She’s the One
  • Wrecking Ball
  • Thunder Road
  • Born in the USA
  • Born to Run
  • Dancing in the Dark
  • Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
  • Twist and Shout
  • I’ll See You in My Dreams

Bruce Springsteen ready to jet in and perform for 200,000 fans at four sold-out Irish concerts

B ruce Springsteen will resume his 40-year-old love affair with Ireland as he gets set to play to almost 200,000 fans over four sold-out Irish concerts.

The US rocker – known as ‘The Boss’ – will play sell-out concerts at Belfast (May 9), Kilkenny (May 12), Cork (May 16) and Dublin (May 19) as the second stop on his European tour.

Springsteen (74) played three sell-out and critically acclaimed concerts at Dublin’s RDS last May – and was so enthused by the response of his Irish and European fans he decided on a return.

Only Spain will rival Ireland for the total number of concerts played this summer by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician who will spend over three months in Europe.

The four concerts sold out within minutes when tickets went on sale last October. Concert organisers Aiken Promotions said Springsteen adored playing Ireland, which he now considers something akin to “a second home”.

The Hungry Heart singer is intensely proud of the fact that he has Irish heritage.

He first played Ireland in June 1985 when he delivered a legendary performance at Slane Castle.

Many consider that Co Meath show to be one of the greatest rock performances ever witnessed in Ireland.

At the time, it was the largest outdoor audience ‘The Boss’ had ever performed and he appeared at the height of his fame following his 1984 blockbuster Born in the USA album.

Over the next four decades, he has never omitted Ireland from any of his European tours – and even recorded an album at the 3Arena (then Point Depot) in Dublin as part of his Seeger Sessions tour.

Springsteen played concerts in Limerick, Belfast, Cork and Kilkenny in 2013 and so enjoyed the regional venues he vowed to make a return visit.

Peter Aiken – whose late father Jim brought Springsteen to Ireland for the first time in 1985 – said it would be a very special series of concerts over the next fortnight. “One million people in Ireland will have been to see him – it is phenomenal,” Mr Aiken said.

Aiken operations manager Shane Mates said the New Jersey rocker would play to a total of almost 200,000 fans in Ireland over the next fortnight – 40,000 at Boucher Fields, Belfast; 29,000 at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny; 40,000 at Páirc Uí Chaoímh, Cork and 80,000 at Croke Park, Dublin.

Mr Mates urged fans to check their tickets to ensure they are attending the correct date, to allow plenty of time to arrive at the concert venues, to have e-tickets downloaded and stored before arrival at the venue and to either walk or use public transport.

Given the reliance on electronic tickets, concert-goers were urged to ensure their phones were fully charged before they headed to the venue.

Gardaí confirmed that there would be no shuttle buses operating for the Cork venue, with roads closed within the footprint area of the stadium.

There will be three separate pedestrian approaches to the venue, all colour-coded for concert-goers.

Garda Superintendent John Deasy said that while shuttle buses were considered, it was decided that these could detract from the effort to get people to use pedestrian access to Páirc Uí Chaoímh and could also result in bottlenecks and delays at the venue.

Cork GAA chief executive Kevin O’Donovan said it was an incredible event for the stadium and for the entire region.

“We are thrilled to have Bruce Springsteen back here for the first time since 2013 and these are the kind of events that we want more of here at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoímh.”

“We feel like we are welcoming back an old friend. This is huge for the stadium, huge for the city and huge for the region.”

Springsteen opened his three-month European tour at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff last night.
