La Palma is also known as “La Isla Verde” ( the green island ) and “La Isla Bonita” ( the beautiful island ) because it’s the greenest of all Canary Islands. Getting Around La Palma Port

  • The port of La Palma is located a 10-minute walk from the old town and Avenida Maritima , a waterfront maritime avenue known for its beautiful architecture and picturesque balconies. Two parallel streets from Avenida Maritima is the Calle O’Daly , the main pedestrian street where you can find souvenir shops, clothing stores, banks, pharmacies, eateries and bars, and historic landmarks.
  • Santa Cruz de La Palma is compact and easily explored on foot. All the main attractions are located within walking distance and you can visit the whole town in about 2 hours. The port area is flat, however, the old town is partially hilly.
  • There are two black sand beaches near the cruise port, Playa de Bajamar and Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma , both located within a 20-25 minute walk from La Palma port.
  • Santa Cruz de La Palma is a charming city, however, the natural beauty of the island can be observed in its inland parts. The entire island is of volcanic origin and full of spectacular natural wonders, including national parks, dense forests, volcanoes, and jaw-dropping sceneries. Therefore, I suggest you explore the island as it’s incredible and honestly one of the most beautiful islands I’ve ever been to.
  • The best ways to get around La Palma are on a guided shore excursion or by renting a car. The roads are well-maintained, there are signs everywhere, and it’s relatively easy to navigate.
  • La Palma has a good public bus network. There are numerous routes connecting the main towns on the island, however, you can’t reach all inland parts by public bus. Both local and intercity public transport in La Palma is operated by TILP company (Transportes Insular La Palma) and you can check the fares and timetables at https://www.tilp.es/
  • You’ll find the nearest bus stops on Avenida Los Indianos, the avenue that runs parallel to the cruise terminal. Upon exiting the port, go around the parking and you’ll see them on your left. The bus station in Spanish is called “Estación de guaguas”.
  • Taxis are available outside the cruise terminal. Besides regular taxis, 8-seater and wheelchair-accessible taxis are normally available. The taxi drivers usually offer standard half-day tours, which is also a great option to explore the island.
  • The tourist information center (Oficina de Información Turística) is housed in a small glass building across the street from the port entrance, right by the roundabout. Here, you can get maps, brochures and useful info on the island.
  • The currency in Spain is EURO (€). Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs and currency exchange are available downtown. The Canary Islands are part of Spain and thus the European Union, however, they are within a VAT-free zone , which means that everything is cheaper compared to the other European cities.
  • Shops and businesses are normally open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 13:30, and then from 16:30 to 20:00 (the break in the middle is commonly known as siesta time ).

2. Caldera de Taburiente National Park

Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente lies in the heart of La Palma and is one of the top-rated places to visit on the island. Spreading across 10 kilometers, Caldera (“cauldron” in English) is a 1,500-meter-deep volcanic crater formed 2 million years ago by erosion of the volcano’s original crater. Over the centuries, a unique ecosystem has been created across the caldera, including lush vegetation, pine forests (Canary Island Pine), and other endemic flora and wildlife.

Caldera de Taburiente, La Palma island

Many shore excursions and tours are daily organized to visit this spectacular UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that combines natural treasures with stunning views, such as the ones from the La Cumbrecita viewpoint (Mirador de La Cumbrecita), Mirador Lomo de las Chozas, Mirador de Los Roques, and many others. Hiking, off-road driving and other adventure activities are the most popular activities in the area. To get there, you can book a tour, rent a car, or book a tour by taxi. I suggest taking an organized excursion to see the most famous attractions in the area.

3. Roque de Los Muchachos

Also known as Mirador del Roque de Los Muchachos, this breathtaking viewpoint sits at the highest point of La Palma island at 2,426 meters above sea level. When translated into English, the “Rock of the Boys” was named after a group of small rock formations about 3 meters high, which resemble a group of boys.

The mountain peak is home to Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory , the largest astronomical observatory in the Northern Hemisphere, home to the largest optical-infrared telescope on the planet. Clear skies and outstanding weather conditions make this observatory a perfect location for astronomical research, attracting scientists from all over the world. Private visits to the observatory may be open to the public.

4. Fuencaliente

Fuencaliente de La Palma is a municipality in the southern part of the island known for dramatic volcanic landscapes and fertile soil suitable for growing Malvasia grape varieties and bananas. The landscape is dominated by an active volcanic ridge known as Cumbre Vieja, and two volcanoes San Antonio and Teneguía. Teneguía’s last eruption took place in 1971 and you can see its crater formed by that eruption from the Volcan San Antonio visitor center.

San Antonio Volcano’s last eruption took place in 1677. You can learn about it in the visitor center which offers an amazing insight into the volcano history of La Palma and theories of how the island was geologically formed. There is an ash path along the edge of the San Antonio Volcano crater, allowing visitors to see the pine trees that have been growing inside the crater for over a century. The crater itself is presumed to have a geological age of about 3,000 years.

Santa Cruz, La Palma Port Guide

santa-cruz-de-la-palma-port

The cruise port of Santa Cruz de La Palma is a popular port of call on many canary island cruises. Conveniently located only 5 minutes from the capital city this is an ideal island port full of tradition, culture and stunning volcanic landscapes.

To reach the capital city from the Santa Cruz cruise port all passengers need to do is take a stroll along the Avenida Maritime Promenade to reach the city’s old quarter. Some cruise lines provide a shuttle bus to the city so look out for this if you would prefer not to walk. La Palma is only a small island and so can easily be explored during a day visit and the port offers impressive views to the nearby mountains. Whilst there isn’t an abundance of tourist attractions on this island like with some of its neighbours, it is an ideal place to stroll around the pretty streets, enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or enjoy a beach day to relax.

la palma cruise port volcano

Plaza de Espana

We recommend a stroll around Plaza de Espana which is the oldest quarter of La Palma. Here you will find a beautiful square hosting some amazing architecture and great places to grab a coffee and watch the world go by. The old town also has plenty of markets occurring throughout the week to do a little bit of local retail therapy.

Museo Naval

If you fancy a spot of military history then a visit to the Military Museum Santa Cruz is a must. It’s a large museum full of military weapons, tanks and artefacts from the two world wars. There are military helicopters, guns and even a flag room available to look at and learn about – perfect for history lovers!

The museum is open Monday – Friday from 10am to 6pm and from 10am to 2pm on the weekends. Entrance costs €4.50 which is a bargain in our eyes!

Puro Palmero Museum

Here at Cruise the Waves we love random museums and the Puro Palmero Museum is certainly one of those! It is a museum dedicated to the history of the famous Palmeran cigar, which happens to be a symbol of the island. A visit to the museum allows visitors to learn about the history of the cigar, tobacco cultivation and even the chance to buy some in the shop.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and entry is €3 – not bad for a historical and cultural museum native to La Palma.

Las Hilanderas El Paso

Another niche museum in which the island of La Palma offers is the Las Hilanderas Handycraft Silk Workshop . Here visitors can learn about the livelihood of silk production for the people of La Palma and everything about the silk industry. The Musume shows visors the whole silk production process and is likely to be really interesting to those in the fashion or textile industry.

The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and is again €3 to enter.

Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente

This national park is well worth a visit if time allows when you are in port. The park is actually a volcanic crater which is the biggest volcanic crater in the world! Many cruise lines offer booked excursions to the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente where visitors can go hiking and explore the volcanic landscape. Some might even allow for a hike to the highest peak in the park Roque de Los Muchachos, which offers stunning views all around.

If you chose to take an excursion to the park that isn’t with your cruise line then as always do ensure you’ve got your timings sorted and that you will return to the ship before sail away! We know that Tui /Marella offer an excursion to the national park combined with some wine tasting – sounds ideal to us!

La Palma’s Beaches

If museums are not your thing and you’d prefer a relaxed sunny beach day then La Palma offers several beaches reachable from the Santa Cruz port. These beaches might not be the usual type you are used to seeing given the islands volcanic landscape and black sand! Santa Cruz has its own beach which is really simple to get to from the cruise port and there are places to get snacks and drinks nearby.

A little further afield is Playa de Bajamar which is about a 20-minute walk from the cruise port – ideal if you fancy a gentle stroll before relaxing on the sand!

Even if you aren’t really a beach person we recommend checking out one of the beaches just to witness the blank sand – it really is quite a different sight to the yellow/white sandy beaches you might be used too!

Food and Drink

A huge part of the diet on La Palma is local fish and seafood. Grab a table at one of the coastal restaurants and try some traditional fish and potatoes to eat like a local! Another local dish is quesa asado which is fried goats cheese – Rachel’s favourite! Be sure to wander the various plazas, marvel at the architecture of ancient churches and sip a fresh juice whilst soaking up the sun!

Sightseeing:

Plaza de Espana, Santa Cruz in, the oldest and most beautiful quarter, has a 16th century fountain and town hall, a magnificent Renaissance church and a handicrafts market where you can pick up distinctive pottery and snack on local delicacies.

Lovingly known as La Isla Verde (the Green Island), La Palma is famous for its flora and fauna, which covers the island in a carpet of varying shades of green. Although one of the smallest Canary Islands, mile for mile it is more mountainous than Tibet! In the north you'll find pretty villages and the fabulous Botanical Gardens. Whilst in the south, pine forests sweep down hillsides to pretty roadside hamlets, with superb coastal views opening out ahead.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The best way to get around the island is to take a tour, but just exploring Santa Cruz and having a lazy lunch is also an excellent way to spend your time.

The island's most spectacular volcanic crater, Caldera de Taburiente, is crammed with rare animal and plant life and has been designated a national park, while its night skies are so clear that a major astrophysical observatory has been built at Roque de los Muchachos.

Nearby Places:

Mountains and volcanoes, beaches and forests, a tropical rain forest, tiny villages and breathtaking views. On La Palma there is much to see in a small area. La Palma is, according to many people, the most beautiful Canary island, unspoilt by tourism and ideal for rest, peace and quiet, walking and hiking. The island has many surprisingly different areas of natural beauty and enjoys a stable climate: pleasant temperatures in all seasons, warm in the winter, not too hot in the summer.

Shopping and Food

For some of the best specialist clothing shopping on the Canaries you'll be hard pushed to find better than Santa Cruz de la Palma.

What's more, it's a pleasure to stroll around this historical gem of a capital. Wander down Cally O'Daly, so named after an Irish merchant based here and find delectable shops in old Canarian balconied buildings.

Pause at the various plazas, some with ancient churches, and others with mammoth ship recreations housing a military museum. Santa Cruz de la Palma is most certainly one of the most prettiest and aesthetically pleasing capitals to be found on the Canary Islands.

The fruit and vegetables found in most shops, cafes and restaurants are grown locally using 'normal' cultivation methods which often means that they have more flavor than visitors from Northern Europe would normally expect. When buying fruit and veg in the supermarket it is usually easy to tell the difference between the local and imported produce. The imported stuff looks 'perfect' - identical shape, identical colour, no marks or blemishes, and is often labelled 'import'. The local produce comes in cardboard or wooden boxes, is delivered directly to the shops and markets by local farmers. The fruit is often mis-shapen. It usually tastes wonderful so don't turn your nose up, try it!

Emergency number: Dial 112 free of charge (valid throughout Spain). Service is given in Spanish, and also in English, French and German in some tourist areas.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

The most common business for shops and businesses hours are Monday through Saturday, from 9.30 h to 13.30 h, and from 16.30 to 20.00 h.

Big shopping centers and department stores open from 10.00 h to 21.00 or 22.00 h uninterruptedly. These big stores open sometimes on Sunday.

In coastal cities, in high season, shops are usually open passed 22.00 h.

Getting To Know La Palma – Cruise Port Guide

Most cruisers would be forgiven for mixing up the Canary Island of La Palma with the capital of the Balearic Island of Majorca, Palma. However, the fifth largest of the seven Canary Islands is a real treasure, and its nickname of ‘La Isla Bonita’ – the Beautiful Island – is a true testament to the sheer abundance of jaw dropping natural wonders that can be uncovered there. At 706 square km in size, La Palma can be very easily explored in a day ashore from a cruise ship and many stop off here in the main town of Santa Cruz de La Palma on the east coast (again not to be confused with the larger town and port of Santa Cruz on the neighbouring island of Tenerife). Now that we’ve figured out the geography, let’s delve into our La Palma cruise port guide and see what else you should be adding to your must see list during your time on the island.

What is immediately evident when docking in this rather sleepy town is that it is for the natural beauty that one visits, with mountains rising up over 2,000 metres immediately viewable from the harbour. In fact, the Roque de Los Muchachos – Rock of Boys – at 4,246 metres above sea level, is second in height only to Mount Teide on Tenerife within the island chain and boasts a telescopic array to wow stargazers; in fact, La Palma is the second most important astrophysics observatory in the world and principle northern hemisphere site. This towering mountain range in the north of the island, overlooks one of four national parks in the Canary Islands, the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Beyond this the ridge of the Cumbre Vieja slopes to the south revealing a barren volcanic landscape and ending at the southern tip of Fuencaliente, where there are various volcanic craters and cones, most notably the San Antonio Volcano. For the nature lovers, the Los Tilos Laurel Forest is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status boasts amazing hiking trails through stunning ecosystems and more hiking routes to explore. All these delights mean that La Palma just might be the hidden gem in the Canary Islands crown.

Travel Tips

The good thing about cruising here is that the port at Santa Cruz de La Palma acts as a gateway to the island, whilst also being a pretty town to stroll around to a more colonial style rather than somewhere that has been over developed like other Canary Island destinations. The port is fairly easy to navigate, with there being a flat walk of approximately 1km to the start of the main pedestrianised street, Calle O’Daly. This street is a mixture of cobblestones and paving slabs, and all along its length you can find an assortment of local souvenir shops, clothing stores, shoe shops, furniture stores and small cafes and bars.

The other main attraction of this town is the street that runs parallel to Calle O’Daly next to the waterfront, the Avenida Maritima . This street is the location of the most impressive set of traditional wooden balconies in all the Canary Islands, and now these former merchants’ houses and fisherman’s’ dwellings have souvenir shops and nice restaurants occupying some of their ground floors.

The last place of interest within the vicinity of the port are the two local beaches of Santa Cruz de La Palma, which runs parallel to the Avenida Maritima , and Playa de Bajamar , around 20 minutes’ walk from the port, situated directly opposite the cruise berth. La Palma itself is not the most renowned Canary Island for its beaches however and being a volcanic island, most of the beaches are black sand.

Those are really the main thing to see in Santa Cruz de La Palma and in reality, aside from the beach, the town itself really can be explored in around 2 hours total. So, the best thing you can do is head off to explore the island. Renting a car is a great way of exploring the island independently and there are a couple of firms in the small terminal building in the port, offering rentals from as low as €35 for a car for a whole day, or of course there are always ship excursions to head off with a guide.

Cruise Expert Insider 🔎 La Palma by Sam Whiteside

Jane Archer No Fly Cruises

Most people I speak to think that La Palma is not as interesting as the other Canary Islands and if I ask them if they have ventured further than the town most will say no. That is a shame because this is definitely what we in the industry call a gateway port. If all you do here is stay around town, I feel you will have missed out on quite possibly the most breath-taking natural scenery you are likely to view. Do be warned though, if you are not someone who has a head for heights or if you get a bit travel sick on winding roads, then La Palma will definitely test you, as all the best bits of the island are high above the clouds, quite literally in some cases.

Don’t get me wrong, if you aren’t really into exploring and getting off the beaten track then you can potter around the town easily enough. You may also find yourself lucky enough as I once was to be in port the day of particular festivities, like the Carnival Los Indianos which occurs in either February or March dependent on the year, and is commonly known as The White Party, for the fact that everyone dresses in white and engage in throwing talcum powder over each other, in a friendly manner of course. There is a reason for this celebration, which is to remember those who once emigrated to Latin America to earn their fortune, who then returned home to La Palma bringing their wealth and some of their newly adopted cultures to share with their fellow islanders. Cuban music, cigars and of course rum bring thousands out onto the streets and it is not uncommon for the town, whose normal population is around 20,000 inhabitants, to swell to almost 50,000. It is one big street party, and I must admit that not even being covered head to toe in talcum powder and all the necessary cleaning that takes place afterwards will dampen your spirits. It was an exhilarating experience.

This is obviously luck of the draw if you end up here on this very day, but if you don’t I have had some wonderful tapas at restaurants that occupy the wonderful old merchants houses on the Avenida Maritima. For me you cannot visit a destination and not try the local food so, whatever you do, make sure you ask for Canarian potatoes with the famous mojo sauces and then pick up some at the souvenir shops or even in the local supermarket before you get back onboard. If you want to take a bottle of something home with you, I have visited the local rum distillery in Charco Azul in the north of the island, and you can find their products in many of the shops in Santa Cruz. The rum is called Aldea and they use traditional distilling methods, and it is still a very labour-intensive process to get their rum. They infuse it with various spices and flavours, my personal favourite being the honey flavoured rum. They also do their own gins and vodkas, but if you are not into spirits, then wine from La Palma is also lovely and full of flavour, grown in the rich volcanic soil to perfection.

Having been raised in a relatively flat part of the UK, I am always fascinated by mountains and La Palma does not disappoint in that. Whether you explore the volcanic craters down at Fuencaliente or fancy heading up to the highest point to see the telescopic array and peer down into the vast chasm that is the Caldera de Taburiente, you will feel like you are on top of the world. I don’t think there are enough superlatives or adjectives to describe the views this island has to offer, sometimes I think it’s best for pictures to do the talking, or better yet see if with your own eyes. I have been a part of shore excursions, but I have also rented cars from the port and the island is simple enough to explore by yourself if you fancy tackling the mountainous terrain. My biggest tip, and I have already said this but will say it again, is go further than the port to fully appreciate this island. If not, you may just be jealous of all the wonders you hear about at your dinner table that evening.

La Palma is the greenest of all Canary Islands, and its main attraction is Caldera Taburiente National Park, a World Biosphere Reserve where fascinating volcanic landscapes meet the island’s dense forests. The national park is located a 30-minute drive from your cruise port terminal, and the best way to visit it is with your cruise ship shore excursion.

A bit further away, in the region of Fuencaliente, in the southern part of the island, you can admire the volcanoes of Teneguia and San Antonio from several different viewpoints. Both volcanoes are still considered active and have visitor centers where you can stop by and learn about the history of La Palma’s volcanoes. The island is truly stunning and has so much to offer, but the natural beauties of La Palma are not to be missed.

La palma, spain cruise port.

  • Once believed to be a huge crater, Caldera de Taburiente is now home to rare animal and plant life and considered the heart of La Palma. Extending across 46.9 square kilometers, it was designated as a national park in 1954 with its most attractive feature being a rugged landscape crisscrossed by numerous streams and waterfalls.
  • Take a stroll down the quaint and charming streets of the cruise port of La Palma for a sensory delight with masses of flowers and colorful antique balconies. Stop by one of the numerous shops and cafes to mingle with locals and get a taste of the island life.
  • For an expression of the diversity of the island, head over to Roque de Los Muchachos and experience breathtaking views above the clouds in this astronomical observatory. Situated 2,396 meters above sea level, this attraction is home to one of the largest reflective telescopes in the world.

About Cruising to La Palma

If your idea of a perfect day in port includes ambling along winding cobbled streets, browsing offbeat craft shops and watching the world go by from a street cafe, Santa Cruz de la Palma is an ideal destination to include on your Spain cruise itinerary .

The city is the capital of La Palma, the most northwesterly of the Canary Islands. On the island, the town is sometimes referred to -- confusingly -- as just La Palma. To further complicate the name game, the island itself owns many titles, too: Its full name is San Miguel de la Palma, but it's also known as La Isla Bonita y Verde, "the beautiful green island."

Whatever you call La Palma, often found on transatlantic itineraries, you'll find fine Spanish colonial houses with elaborate balconies and bougainvillea-draped white frontages -- and one of the world's largest volcanic craters. The Caldera de Taburiente measures nearly 17.5 miles across and nearly half a mile deep, and because it is home to rare animal and plant life, it has also been designated a national park.

La Palma is a volcanic island, just like the rest of the Canary Islands, and some of La Palma's dramatic volcanoes are still active. The island was claimed by the Spanish in 1493, and both human remains and ancient utensils indicate that the island has been inhabited since pre-historic times.

The port is filled with cute cobbled streets and a scattering of cafes, restaurants, bars and craft shops

Traffic can be busy around the immediate port area

There's beauty to be found in port and further out for those looking to explore the island's volcanic terrain

The port is unpretentious and uncommercialized, which is a nice way of saying there's no reason to hang around. It offers a cafe and a car rental office. The marina has a few bars, a cafe, an ATM and free Wi-Fi.

Good to Know?

Traffic is busy as you walk into Santa Cruz from the port gates; you need to cross several junctions. Although there are crossings, traffic seems to come from all directions, so be cautious and alert.

Getting Around?

By Bus: Buses operate around the island from Avenida de Bajamar. For a couple of euros, you can buy a return ticket to the nearest beach, Playa de los Cancajos, which lies about three miles to the south.

By Taxi: Taxis are a good way to travel on the island, though most are pricey. A taxi from the port (just outside the terminal) to the beach costs around 20 euros one way -- this is more reliable than buses if you're on a tight schedule. For an island tour, budget around 35 euros for an hour or so, depending on your negotiation skills (establish the fare in advance).

By Car: If your ship is in port for a long time, you could consider hiring a car at Autos la Palma on Avenida Maritima. It's not recommended on a short cruise call because the roads are winding, mountainous and slow to negotiate.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

The currency is the euro. See www.oanda.com or www.xe.com for conversion rates.

Spanish is spoken, and many residents speak at least a smattering of English, but it could be worth investing in a phrase book if you're heading off on your own.

Where You're Docked?

You'll disembark at the port of Santa Cruz, located on the eastern part of the island.

10 Best things to do in La Palma, Canary Islands - Tours & places to visit

la palma bridge los tilos

La Palma is one of the smaller Canary Islands , very different from the bigger islands like Tenerife or Gran Canaria in terms of scenery and tourism as well.

La Palma is (fortunately) still untouched by mass tourism, as most visitors come here for an active holiday, to enjoy the amazing scenery and discover the island on foot.

What to do in La Palma - Places to visit and tours

1. caldera de taburiente national park, 2. unique experience: go on a guided tour to see the new volcano on la palma, 3. roque de los muchachos, 4. stargazing in la palma at roque de los muchachos observatory, 5. dolphin and whale watching boat tour, 6. los indianos carnival, 7. salinas de fuencaliente - the salt fields of la palma, 8. visit santa cruz de la palma, 9. wildlife viewing and cumbre vieja boat tour, 10. spend a day at the beach in tazacorte.

During the summertime, you can combine an active holiday with a beach holiday, and you can enjoy the beautiful natural beaches in La Palma, with dark black sand that won't let you forget that you are visiting a volcanic island.

la palma caldera park photos

Caldera de Taburiente is a massive volcanic crater of around 10 km across, with massive mountainous walls all around of about 2000 m in height.

In order to enjoy all the beauty of this place, you should be prepared to hike on one of the many trails inside the park. If you don't know where to start you can head first to the visitor center near El Paso, in order to learn more about the park and what you can explore in this area.

Walk over the brand new volcano at the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge which erupted in September 2021 .

Discover the new volcano of La Palma and learn about the consequences of its eruption for the island's residents as you get to walk on Spain's youngest piece of land.

  • The starting point is the National Park Visitor Center (El Paso)
  • Includes: guided walking tour
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before activity starts

Roque de los Muchachos, situated inside Caldera de Taburiente National Park, is actually the highest point on the island of La Palma , at an altitude of 2423m above sea level. This rock formation is situated close to the famous Observatory with the same name and on clear days, from that altitude, you can see some of the other Canary Islands: Tenerife , La Gomera and El Hierro.

You can drive up there on your own if you rent a car, and the drive from the capital will take around 70 minutes. The views you get while driving there and the views from Roque de los Muchacos are simply breathtaking, as you are well above the clouds in one of the most unique places in the Canary Islands (and possibly on the planet).

Roque de los muchachos observatory la palma

Did you know that La Palma is considered to be one of the best places in the world for stargazing?

The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is known as the second-best location for optical and infrared astronomy in the northern hemisphere, after Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. The low light pollution in La Palma makes it the perfect place for stargazing and although the observatory is primarily used by scientists in research, the place is open for visitors, depending on the weather conditions.

A visit to the Observatory usually lasts between 70 and 90 minutes and you do need to make a booking first with one of the approved tour companies. Night tours are not allowed at the observatory.

dolphin canary islands spain

Make the most of your trip to La Palma on this 3-hour dolphin and whale-watching adventure. Going on a boat trip is one of the top activities to do in La Palma, as the Canary Islands are a good destination for whale-watching tours.

During this trip, you can also learn a lot about these fascinating creatures from marine biologists and it will be a memorable experience if you get to see them live in their natural environment..

  • Enjoy a 3-hour cruise around the coast of La Palma
  • Visit the magical Cueva Bonita and Poris de Candelaria
  • Opportunity to see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat

Did you know about the carnival in La Palma known as the Fiesta de los Indianos?

Fiesta de los Indianos dates back to the times when people returned to their native island of La Palma from the colonies in Latin America, bringing back to the archipelago wealth and some of the traditions from across the ocean. This Spanish festival takes place in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma and everyone dresses in white and people throw talcum powder at each other. It's a really unique carnival in the Canary Islands and very different from the big carnival in Tenerife. It usually takes place in February or March and if you are planning a holiday around that time of the year, make sure to add the carnival of Los Indianos to your list of what to do in La Palma.

Salinas fuencaliente la palma

The salt fields are located in the south of the island and they have been declared an Official Site of Scientific Interest, due to the fact that many species of birds can be found in this area. By visiting this unique place in La Palma you can see how salt is harvested, learn more about salt production while walking around the salt fields and see the entire process with your own eyes. There's also a nice gift shop on-site and a restaurant (El Jardin de la Sal) that gets good reviews from visitors and is worth trying out for a nice lunch.

what to do santa cruz de la palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of La Gomera and the island's largest city.

You should take a day to visit Santa Cruz de La Palma and walk around its old streets in order to see the beautifully preserved wooden balconies, a symbol of the Canary Islands architecture.

There are many authentic bars and restaurants since this is a residential city, so you can also sample some of the local dishes in one of the places where the locals go to eat.

Santa Cruz is also one of the best places to stay in La Palma , especially if you want to explore the entire island, as it's easy to move around, either by public transport or by using a rental car.

See dolphins, whales, turtles, and other marine life during a boat tour with an experienced crew.

You also get to see the lava flows of the Cumbre Vieja ridge, a unique opportunity to see the youngest piece of land in the Canary Islands archipelago.

  • Take in a unique and exciting underwater view of marine life
  • See the lava flows of the Cumbre Vieja ridge

tazacorte la palma

Located on the west coast of La Palma, Tazacorte is usually the sunniest place on the island, so it's also one of the best places to stay if you're after a sunny holiday, where you want to spend time at the beach.

The beach in Tazacorte has black volcanic sand, but it is beautiful and large and it is a lovely place to spend the day sunbathing and swimming. You'll find many nice places to eat nearby and if you get bored you can go on to explore the town, which has a nice promenade.

La Palma, Doris Visits Santa Cruz in the Canary Islands

Once you are in the Canaries area , your ship is just a floating hotel, which overnight moves you to another island. La Palma, ‘the fair isle’, was our stop having left Madeira. It is so called because of its fabulous landscape. Of all the many cruise stops, Santa Cruz is up there as one of the prettiest harbours and is again small enough to explore on foot. If you were not on a cruise, your Canary Islands holiday might never see this gem.

About Us

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson.  Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.

Exploring the beauty of La Palma

la palma cruise port volcano

This is a guest post about La Palma by Sam Whiteside, Port Presenter with P&O Cruises. You can find out more about Sam at the end of this article.

When you think of cruising to the Canary Islands, most people will imagine docking in Tenerife or Gran Canaria for sun, sea and sand. Many would never consider visiting La Palma on a cruise.

You might associate the name La Palma with the capital of the Balearic Island of Majorca, Palma. However it’s actually the fifth largest of the seven Canary Islands and is a real treasure. Its nickname ‘La Isla Bonita’ – the Beautiful Island – is a true testament to the sheer abundance of jaw dropping natural wonders that can be uncovered.

la palma cruise port volcano

At 706 square km, La Palma is easy to explore in a day from a cruise ship. When docking in this rather sleepy port, it’s immediately evident that ships visit for the natural beauty. Sailing in to La Palma is impressive, with mountains rising up over 2,000 metres. In fact the Roque de Los Muchachos – Rock of Boys – at 4,246 metres above sea level, is second in height only to Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife, within the island chain.

Santa Cruz de la Palma

La Palma is not the typical Canary Island holiday destination. The port at Santa Cruz de La Palma acts as a gateway to the island, but it’s also a pretty town to stroll around. You will find a colonial style of architecture that is very different to other, overdeveloped ports in the Canary Islands.

la palma cruise port volcano

The port area is easy to navigate. There is a flat walk of approximately 1km to the start of the main pedestrianised street Calle O’Daly. This street is a mixture of cobblestones and paving slabs, and all along its length you will find an assortment of local souvenir shops, clothing stores, shoe shops, small cafés and bars. About half way up the street you come to the Plaza Espana, home to the Renaissance Town Hall and the Church of El Salvador.

If you continue along the street it passes more local shops and restaurants, which tend to be more laid back in their opening hours. They also observe a siesta time in the early afternoon. The restaurants serve up traditional Canarian meals such as grilled octopus salad, prawns infused with garlic and, of course, wrinkly Canarian potatoes with traditional Mojo sauce.

Other highlights in the town centre include the Plaza de la Alameda, along Calle Anselmo Perez. Here you will find the Museo Naval, housed in a concrete reconstruction of Santa Maria. This was the flagship of Christopher Columbus when he sailed to, and discovered, the New World in 1492 (Open Monday-Friday 10AM-6PM, Saturday-Sunday 10AM-2PM, €4.50 per person).

You may also want to explore the street parallel to Calle O’Daly next to the waterfront, the Avenida Maritima. Here sit the most impressive set of traditional 18 th and 19 th century wooden balconies in all of the Canary Islands. This is definitely something not to be missed on any stroll around Santa Cruz.

la palma cruise port volcano

La Palma is not renowned for its beaches and, being a volcanic island, most have black sand. Santa Cruz de La Palma has been working on its main town beach for as long as I can remember and it is finally open to the public. It is simple to get to from the ship and is close to all the amenities of town. It is also lifeguard patrolled in the summer.

You can also visit Playa de Bajamar, a black sand beach that lies directly opposite the main cruise ship berth. It is around a 20 minute walk from the port. This beach is sheltered from the rough Atlantic waves by the breakwater of the cruise pier, so it is a relaxing place to swim. There are some changing facilities and also a small pop-up bar, which sells snacks and drinks. On weekends it is popular with locals.

la palma cruise port volcano

These are the main things to see in Santa Cruz de La Palma. In reality the town can be explored in 2 hours. Most people I speak to think that La Palma is not as interesting as the other Canary Islands and if I ask them if they have ventured further than the town, most will say no. This is a shame because, as I mentioned before, the port is a gateway to the wonderful natural beauty of the island.

Renting a car is a great way of exploring the island independently. There are a couple of firms in the small terminal building in the port, offering rentals from as low as €35 for a car for a whole day. Alternatively there are always cruise ship excursions with a guide.

So if you are an intrepid explorer, here are some things not to be missed on La Palma:

Caldera de Taburiente National Park

The main highlight of the island lies right at its heart. Formed around 2 million years ago, the caldera is around 10 km across, and in places the walls tower 2000m over the caldera floor.

la palma cruise port volcano

The main place to experience the caldera in all its glory is the La Cumbrecita viewpoint. It’s located at the end of a narrow valley that opens up over the edge of the crater. Waterfalls of cloud ascend or descend over this area designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. There are several walking trails around to various other viewpoints, which can all be viewed prior to entry into the national park at the welcome centre in El Paso.

If you are thinking of visiting independently and have your own transport, then you need to reserve a space in the car park located at the La Cumbrecita viewpoint, which is extremely limited. The minimum time spent at the park is 30 minutes, but to fully appreciate the viewpoint and its trails, 1-2 hours is recommended. If taking a taxi from the port, you can expect to pay around €60 for a 2 hour tour.

El Paso is a small town and municipality located at the centre of the island. It is the starting point for explorations of the Caldera de Taburiente, but it also has a couple of interesting and unusual attractions of its own.

la palma cruise port volcano

In the heart of the town you can find the Museo de la Seda, the only place left in the Canary Islands where the traditional method of weaving silk is still practiced. The ladies that make the silk are on hand to take you through the processes and can demonstrate exactly how they produce wonderful threads and colours using only natural products. The silks are so good, that world renowned fashion and shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, a La Palma native, uses them in his stunning creations. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 10AM-2PM, priced at €3 per person for entrance.

If you venture out of the centre of El Paso, you will find the unusual sight of La Glorieta Square. Designed by local Luis Morera, it is one of the most emblematic sites of the island. It is made up of thousands of coloured mosaic tiles, surrounded by natural lava stone walls and various vegetation formed from cement. It is an open park with no admission fee and offers great views over the west coast. Hopefully when you visit the sun is shining so that it enhances all of the fantastic colours.

la palma cruise port volcano

Roque de Los Muchachos

La Palma is of particular importance in terms of world astrophysics. The highest point of the island is the location of the second most important astrophysics observatory in the world, and the principal northern hemisphere observatory. With no industry, meaning no pollution and very clear skies, the island is the ideal location for researchers from various nations.

la palma cruise port volcano

You can book private visits of the observatory online. It will be possible to visit the observatory every day of the week from 15th June to 15th September. The rest of the year the available days for visit are Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and are at designated times, usually in the morning.

The price of a visit is €9 per person, but you would also have to get to the observatory privately, which in a taxi would cost around €90. If you do not fancy visiting the observatory, then just admiring the view from the various viewpoints and the trail at the highest point is enough to take tour breath away, trust me.

Fuencaliente

Located at the southern end of La Palma, Fuencaliente is a landscape that is dominated by the volcanic ridge of Cumbre Vieja. This ridge is an active but dormant volcano. This area is popular for hikes along the various trails around the craters and for stunning views over the Martian like landscape.

la palma cruise port volcano

One of the main places to head to is the San Antonio Volcano, which has a visitor centre. You can also walk around the rim of this dormant volcano that last erupted in the 17 th  century. The volcano is very accessible and you simply make your way through the visitor centre, walk up an ash path and you are on its rim. This walk affords exceptional views towards the Teneguia vent and down towards the southern tip of the island.

la palma cruise port volcano

To access the welcome centre and walk around the edge of the San Antonio crater, a small entrance fee of €3.50 applies and the area is open daily from 9AM. A taxi down to Fuencaliente from Santa Cruz de La Palma will cost around €60 for 2 hours.

Los Tilos Laurel Forest

As a biosphere reserve, La Palma boasts some amazing hiking trails through stunning ecosystems, with over 1,000km of designated hiking routes. One of the most important is 24km to the north east of the capital – the Los Tilos Laurel Forest. There is an interpretation centre on arrival where you can learn more about the flora and fauna that can be found within the forest.

la palma cruise port volcano

Admission is free and the centre is open from 9AM-6:30PM daily. From here you can enter the forest. There are some excellent self-guided walks to choose from. One is 2.5 km long, which takes you around the heart of the forest, while the other climbs up 1,000 metres until you reach the refreshing springs of Marcos and Cordero.

You can probably see that La Palma should never be overlooked or underestimated. It has a wealth of beautiful scenery and is an island that requires you to be active and appreciative of the natural side of tourism. I hope that by reading this, more people will be attracted to this beautiful Island and consider it more often when booking their cruise to the Canary Islands.

You will find a range of destination information to help with your cruise planning, on the Port Guides section of this website.

6 top transatlantic cruises for 2024.

Journey across the Atlantic while enjoying all the amenities at sea.

The Top Transatlantic Cruises

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 in New York.

Sailing from New York to England on Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 is just one of many transatlantic offerings in 2024.

Transatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Cunard Line

Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 in New York, near the Statue of Liberty.

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Equinox at sea.

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas in port in Florida.

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.
