THE BEST WAY TO SEE ONTARIO!

This was an all-day tour and you must remember water and eats. A great box lunch is available for an extra charge and is sufficient to share. The train trip was great and even saw a bear in the wild. The hikes took you to remarkable scenes. I would highly recommend this tour.

We had a beautiful ride up and back. People were friendly and the scenery was fantastic. We enjoyed the informative talk on the way north. The park was very nice. We enjoyed a picnic lunch by the river, then hiked to see the falls.

Very nice train ride and the train was well equiped for some disable travellers. The points of interests were announced prior to getting there so you can have your camera ready and position yourself to take the photos. The walk in the canyon is very refreshing and to have the view of the train when it makes the turn going or returning is totally awesome.

We had a great day on the Agawa Canyon Train ride today. Met some amazing people. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The scenery was spectacular and when we stopped we had a picnic and a beautiful walk to see the falls.

Had a relaxing train tour through the countryside on the way to Agawa Canyon. We bought lunch items on the train with the provided vouchers before arriving at the canyon so we could enjoy a picnic there. Had a nice scenic walk along the river to the Bridal Veil and Black Beaver Falls after our lunch. Trails were well maintained. Clean restrooms at the canyon as well as on the train. Want to note the friendly helpful staff especially Mary who was of great assistance in helping with my lost sunglasses. Lots of historical commentary on the area during the trip.

We did this stop while doing the Lake Superior Circle tour. It was a great way to see the wilderness of Ontario. The staff was very helpful and was a beautiful area!

Agawa canyon tour train, 9 facts to know about the agawa canyon tour train, the journey.

As you settle into your comfortable coach, traces of city life soon fade away as the Northern Ontario wilderness begins to unfold outside the windows. The mixed forests of the Canadian Shield open up as you skirt the shores of northern lakes, rivers and cross towering trestles. Set eyes on the same rugged landscapes and majestic views that inspired the Group of Seven to create some of Canada’s most notable works of art.

As you head north you’ll pass logging roads, quiet holiday camps and intriguing sign posts. Then at mile 102, just after a glimpse of Lake Superior, the train starts its descent into the canyon. As the rail line hugs the top of the canyon wall, you’ll descend 500 feet over the next 10 miles to the floor of the Agawa Canyon, created more than 1.2 billion years ago by faulting and widened and reshaped by the last ice age that retreated 10,000 years ago.

AGAWA CANYON PARK

As the train pulls to a stop at mile 114, you’ll have an hour and a half to experience the jewel of the tour – Agawa Canyon Park, which is only accessible by rail. There are plenty of picnic areas for those wishing to have lunch during the stopover or you may want stretch your legs and go explore!

Enjoy scenic walks on graveled trails leading to the famous Bridal Veil Falls or the lesser know Black Beaver Falls, or experience the invigorating climb up over 300 stairs to the breathtaking lookout, perched 250 feet above the canyon floor.

Experience The Group of Seven

Sault Ste. Marie played an important role in bringing together Canada’s greatest art collective, the Group of Seven. The group traveled to the city many times, capturing the landscapes with their beautiful brush strokes.

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train will pass several sites captured by the Group of Seven, including The Solemn Land  (based on Montreal River Harbour) and  Algoma Waterfall  (based on Bridal Veil Falls), by J.E.H MacDonald. The original sketch of The Solemn Land, painted after MacDonald first visited the area in 1918, is part of the permanent collection at the  Art Gallery of Algoma .

When the train stops within the Agawa Canyon, hike towards Bridal Veil Falls where you’ll see the cascading tiers of water which inspired multiple sketches and paintings by members of the Group of Seven including Lawren Harris and the aforementioned J.E.H. MacDonald.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is the Agawa Canyon?

The Agawa Canyon is located within the wonderous beauty of Algoma Country in Northern Ontario. It was created 1.2 billion years ago through the movement of the earth’s tectonic plates known as faulting . This movement of the Canadian Shield along with the fury of the Agawa River eroded the canyon into what we see today. For a frame of mind, the last layer of ice melted 10,000 years ago.

While it said the Agawa Canyon can be accessed by a hike, I would advise against this. Unless you’re with a local who knows the way or you’ve done trips like this before, it’s easy to become lost in the vast wilderness of Northern Ontario. The only real way to access the Agawa Canyon is by train.

Experiencing the Agawa Canyon Tour Train

Besides a not-to-be-missed excursion, the Agawa Canyon Tour Train is a day-long rail adventure that allows you to explore untouched areas of Canada’s wilderness. Hop on board as you head 183 km (114 miles) north of The Soo  to the Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park . You’ll admire the iconic landscapes that inspired some of the most compelling paintings from the Group of Seven. No wonder it’s one of the most popular train excursions in North America!

The Agawa Canyon Train Tour is operating for the 2022 season from August 1st until October 10th, leaving at 8:00 am every morning. Wave goodbye to Sault Ste Marie as you rumble past the old paper mill and under the iconic international bridge. During your journey, listen as you enjoy facts and historical tidbits about the area with the GPS triggered narration on board. It won’t be long until you’re out of cell service – a true sign of the rugged wilderness!

The views begin at mile 20 as you enjoy the sights of the Bellevue Valley. Here you’ll cross a 100ft high trestle, taking you across Lake Superior’s Goulais Bay. A few miles down the road you’ll have more beautiful views of the Goulais River along with a quick glimpse of Sault Ste Marie’s classic winter destination, the Searchmont Ski Resort.

Every 5-10 miles or so along the route you’ll be in awe of the gorgeous lakes and rivers that appear. Trout Lake at Mile 57 is definitely a picture-perfect sight as the train winds through the Canadian Shield. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for Mile 92 as the train crosses the Montreal River trestle. Offering amazing views in both directions, you’ll be able to see the train from end to end as it curves along the tracks. If you plan on stretching your legs inside the cabin, keep an eye on the markers outside. As soon as they hit Mile 100, head for your seat as you won’t want to miss what’s next.

At Mile 102, the train descends +500ft in 12 miles as it heads for the Agawa Canyon floor. Look to your left to see the incredible sweeping forests along with your first glimpse of Lake Superior since Mile 19. Feast your eyes on the Agawa River as it winds below, along with the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls on your right. In just a few moments your trip will be changing gears. I hope you relaxed on the train ride in because it’s time to kick things into high gear!

Exploring the Agawa Canyon

As soon as you can disembark – hit the ground running. Due to CN regulations, you have 90 minutes to explore everything within the canyon and every second counts! I’m not going to lie to you, it’s tough but possible to see it all. Ready for the challenge? Let’s GO!

Turn right and head straight for the Lookout Trail . This is the toughest of the trails and I’m a fan of getting the hard part over and done with first. While ascending 250ft above the canyon floor via 321 steps doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, I promise the views from the top are worth it. While your shutter finger will be trigger happy, take a moment to truly enjoy the view from behind your camera or cellphone. Catch your breath then head back down – we’ve still got more to see!

Right now you should have about 50-60 minutes left on the clock which will give you just enough time to tackle the rest of the canyon. Head back and follow the Talus Trail which will take you along the western side of the canyon’s base. Along the trail, you’ll find beautiful trees, babbling brooks and even a glimpse of the local wildlife if you’re lucky! Keep your eyes peeled for ruffed grouse, woodchucks and chipmunks as they scamper about in the shadows. Even on a hot day, the trail will be cool as it’s mainly shaded. You’ll be thankful for this as you speedwalk along the trail!

Cross the river and follow the signs for the North and South Black Beaver Falls . Depending on the time of year, the falls could be a raging current or even a slow trickle. As my visit to the Agawa Canyon had to be pushed a day due to the tracks being washed out, both North Black Beaver Falls and South were looking fantastic!

Now you should have about 30 minutes until your departure and just enough time to save the best for last – Bridal Veil Falls . At 225m tall, this breathtaking beauty will have you mesmerized! Finish off the Talus Trail and turn right, following the Agawa River. One of the biggest perks of leaving her for last? There’s a good chance you’ll have the view all to yourself. Score! Take your time and enjoy the sound of the water as it crashes into the river below. Don’t lose track of time though – you’ve got a train to catch!

Backtrack and follow the  River Trail until the second fork, then take a left. This will take you to a trail that runs parallel to the tracks (look both ways before crossing!) and will save you a bit of time as you head back to the train. If you hear the whistle blow, that’s your 10 minute warning so haul ass and hop on board! I don’t think I’ve been so excited to see a seat in my life. Soon the train will be in motion and it’s time to head back to Sault Ste Marie!

If the 4-hour train ride seemed a little long on the way in, chances are it’ll fly by on the way home as the train’s soothing motion lulls you to sleep. If the motion doesn’t do it then chances are the food baby you’ll get from grabbing a bite on the restaurant car will! It can be tough to fight the heavy eyes but I suggest a cup of coffee and enjoying the views one last time. Who knows when you’ll be back, right?!

Questions About the Agawa Tour Train Trip

Have I convinced you to hop on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train? If so, then I’m excited to help you plan your adventure! These are some of the frequently asked questions about the tour train. If your question is missing, please comment below and I’d be happy to update this post with an answer.

Can You Drive to the Agawa Canyon?

No, the Agawa Canyon is not accessible by car. The best you can do is drive to Sault Ste Marie where you can grab the train from the station off of Bay Street.

Where Does the Agawa Canyon Tour Train Leave From?

New for 2022, the Agawa Canyon Tour Train departs from the brand new Canal District Complex at 99 Huron Street in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It’s also home to the Blockhouse Pub as well as The Outfitters and right next door to The Mill Steakhouse and the Boiler Room.

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train used to leave from the Station Mall across from the Quality Inn Hotel & Suites on Bay Street making it a preferred hotel option for the tour, however this is no longer the case. The Water Tower Inn and many of the other hotels offer tour train packages so you may want to think about booking a room there!

What Time Does the Agawa Canyon Tour Train Leave?

Be prepared for an early morning as the train leaves at 8:00 am sharp . I can’t stress this enough. Whether you arrive at 8:10 or 8:01 am, that train is leaving without you! I recommend getting there 15 minutes early to ensure you are there with plenty of time to spare. If you’re an early riser and get there by 7:15am, you can see the train arrive – perfect for locomotive enthusiasts. Whether you do this or not, just remember that if you are late, the train will not wait!

Where Does the Agawa Canyon Train Go?

This Sault Ste Marie train leaves from Huron Street near the historic canal and takes you into Northern Ontario. You’ll follow the rails as they take you past Searchmont and into the beautiful wilderness that inspired the Group of Seven. You’ll twist and turn past incredible landscapes as you pass through Montreal Falls, Hubert and many areas in between until you come upon the Agawa Canyon Park.

How Long Is the Agawa Canyon Train Ride?

This is a full-day excursion from Sault Ste Marie. It takes approximately 4 hours to get to the Agawa Canyon by train and you have about 1.5 hours to experience the park. Yes, we all wish we had more time there but due to rules and regulations, this is not the case. If anything, it just means you’ll have to plan another visit!

Is There Anywhere to Eat?

As the tour is a full-day excursion, you might be wondering what to do for breakfast and lunch. You are welcome to pack food or get take-out from one of the fine restaurants in Sault Ste Marie in advance to take with you. However, you must bring everything back to the city that you take with you to the Agawa Canyon. There are no garbage facilities out in the middle of the wilderness!

If you’re less prepared like I am and don’t have the time or the energy to plan ahead, not to worry. When you book your ticket, there is an Agawa Canyon Train food option to purchase a boxed lunch. If you forget to do so, the boxed lunches can be ordered here up to 24 hours before you depart. While there is a canteen on board, they only serve small snacks and beverages.

Are There Bathrooms in the Agawa Canyon?

You won’t find the typical flush toilets but yes, there are. The bathroom facilities run on a Clivus Multrum system which is environmentally friendly. They produce fertilizer which is actually used for the flowers in the park so do not throw garbage in them . There are also bathrooms on board the train for when nature calls!

Insider Tips for the Agawa Canyon Tour Train

Since I’ve had the privilege to experience this incredible Ontario adventure firsthand, here are my insider tips on how to make the most of your trip.

Arrive Early So You Have First Dibs on Seat Selection

This is key as you’ll want to sit on the right side, facing the hotels on Bay Street and away from the waterfront. The best views are on the right side (when facing the head of the train). Chances are you’ll be so excited you won’t be able to sleep so you’ll be catching the views on the way in. You’ll be zonked from the early morning in combination with exploring the Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park so don’t be surprised if you pass out on the way back to The Soo!

Even though the cars are assigned, you are still free to roam the train during the trip. For the best views during your adventure, coach 4 offers them on the way to the canyon while coach 1 offers them on the way back . You may be able to snag a seat in either of these if the train is not full, but I suggest asking before doing so.

Eat Your Meals on the Train

Whether you eat from the dining car or pack your own food, I suggest eating on the train. As you only have 90 minutes actually in the park, you’ll want to make each one count and explore as much as possible!

Bring Your Belongings With You in the Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park

While you are assigned a car on your ticket, seats themselves are not. Bring your belongings with when you disembark. The tour train staff turn the seats around while you’re exploring the park to prepare for departure, so belongings on the floor are in danger of being stepped on or broken. Add that to the fact that people love changing seats… your belongings are safest with you.

When is the Best Time to Take the Agawa Canyon Tour Train?

Autumn is the peak season for the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, meaning more people in the wilderness park. While it’s a trip of a lifetime with the fall foliage, consider taking this trip in the summer to avoid crowds. I don’t know about you but I prefer my nature with as few people as possible! My ideal time would be an Agawa Canyon snow train but alas, that has not been available for years now.

If you wish to visit with the fall foliage, typically the last two weeks of September and the first week of October are best for leaf-peeping. This is not guaranteed though and is dependent on the weather and seasonal trends. Agawa Canyon Train prices also vary by season so check their website for any discounts that may be available.

Any Tips for Saving Money on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train?

With autumn being peak season, it also means the Agawa Canyon Tour Train is more expensive. As of 2022, adult tickets for the train are $130 per person and increase to $150 per person in the peak season. Dates vary every year but peak season begins around the middle of September. For 2022, peak season begins on September 17th.

What to Do After the Agawa Canyon

While many visit Sault Ste Marie solely for the Agawa Canyon Tour Train experience, the city has plenty more to offer. It would be a sin not to spend a day or two exploring! Unsure of what to do? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Learn about some of the city’s history. There are a number of fascinating museums and historical sites throughout the city. I highly recommend paying a visit to the Canadian Bushplane Museum as well as the Ermatinger Clergue Site.
  • Watch boats as they bypass the St Mary’s Rapids via the Sault Ste Marie Canal National Historic Site.
  • Get outside and take a walk! The Hub Trail takes you along the city’s waterfront and offers some spectacular views of the International Bridge as well as Sault Ste Marie, Michigan at sunset. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, you can head a little north of the city to Kinsmen Park in the Hiawatha Highlands.
  • Enjoy a meal at some of the amazing restaurants in Sault Ste Marie . You don’t want to miss the incredible eats that await you at The Breakfast Pig. Grab a coffee and some of the best cheesecake of your life at Scott Coffee Co. The best burger I’ve ever sunk my teeth into can be found at Chummy’s Bar and Grill on the Bachewana First Nation Rankin Reserve. That’s just a few to start! Let’s just say if you leave Sault Ste Marie hungry… you did it wrong.

This quick summary will easily keep you busy for at least two or three days! Check out the map of Sault Ste Marie below for even more inspiration for things to do in the city.

Ready for this Northern Ontario Train Tour?

This adventure is something that everyone should experience at least once while exploring Ontario. With great eateries, plenty of waterfalls and Lake Superior at its doorstep, I’d consider extending your stay to take advantage of the multi-night packages. I’m Canadian, and I had never heard of this train before! It looks like an amazing journey – I’ll pass it on to my parents, who are always visiting Ontario.

Lindz author

It’s so incredible! I’d do it again in a heartbeat, though I think this time I’ll attempt an autumn adventure. It would be mesmerizing with all the colours!

Lindsay! This is amazing!! I’ve always wanted to do this train trip. Be honest, how fast were you hustling in those 90 minutes? haha.

I was hauling ass . Totally worth it though as I got to see everything!! I just ran like a mad woman between locations so I had time to enjoy them when I got there HAHA.

Janine Good

I love the Agawa Canyon Tour Train!! I had breakfast on the train and those pancakes were golden. I loved seeing where the Group of 7 painted a bunch of their signature pieces. The only thing we ran into was an influx of black flies! This experience is a must for anyone visiting Ontario 🙂

Argh for the black flies! I was thinking it’s be best to go in sprint to see all those lush green colours, but I HATE those bitey bastard flies! Maybe autumn is best after all! 😉

Beautiful photos! This journey looks amazing, I’ll definitely be looking into it next time I’m in Ontario! 🙂

It’s seriously awesome and I’m so glad I had the chance to experience it! I’d love to see it in the fall sometime too!

OMG, you keep adding to the list of things I need to do/see in Canada!!

Embarrassingly, I have never heard of Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park, but wowza! It is so green and lush and beautiful! Those waterfalls are stunning too. If I make it, I will totally follow your route – I always want to get to the highest points first…90 minutes is not long for an explore though. 🙁

Haha sorry no sorry about the ever-growing list!! It is unfortunate but it’s due to union laws as those conducting the train have a limit to the length they can work which cuts the visit short. As you can see though, it’s totally doable to see everything! You just gotta move your butt!

I’ve lived in Northern Ontario for almost 13 years, and I had no idea this train excursion existed. I have visited Awaga several times and it is such a beautiful area. I will have to remember this next time I am looking for a trip that is close to me.

I am thinking of going in early July. is that considered black fly time?

If you’re going early July this year then the bugs will probably still be bad as it’s been a very wet spring leading into summer. If you want to dodge the bugs, I highly recommend a later visit when the temperatures have had a chance to stay warm so that the bugs aren’t as bad. I hope that helps!

Wow. It’s amazong. Is this picture taken from Lookout Trail? I see houses there. Does that mean this place is accessible by car?

Hi Liam! Unfortunately the Agawa Canyon is not accessible by car. I have heard that there is the possibility of a trail but I have no idea where it is or where you would access it from. You would need local knowledge in order to access it and the area is very heavy for bear activity when the train isn’t around. I seriously wouldn’t recommend it so you’ll have to catch the train for these views!

Debbie Stegmier

Question: How difficult is the terrain in the canyon stop? Wondering if it is suitable for people who are not quite as agile as we were in our 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Hi Debbie! The terrain isn’t too difficult as the majority of the trails are gravel without too steep of an incline. As for the lookout, there is a staircase here with approximately 300 steps that will take you to those gorgeous views 🙂 I hope this helps!

does the train have any open air spots to take photos not through a window?

That’s a great question, Judy! During my experience, I was allowed access to one of the windows between the cars though I’m not sure if this is an option anymore. I would recommend asking as you’re boarding the train! 🙂

How is the first week of September for the tour? I see it’ll be cloudy and chance of rain, can I reschedule for the day after when the sun will be out?

Hi Irfan, the weather can change within days so it’s hard to say what the weather will be like! Your best bet is to contact the Agawa Canyon Tour Train directly to see what their policy is for rescheduling.

Can we drive up to Sault Saint Marie by car, book a hotel and take the train? Do we need to purchase the train tickets in advance? Or can we purchase the tickets when we book the hotel?

Hi Marina! You can book the tickets whenever – I do believe they need to be booked at least a day in advance but your best bet would be to contact the tour train itself to confirm 🙂

Thanks for the article. I have never done something like this before. Just curious as what the social norms are about how to sit with your spouse, when 4 seats face each other. If you sit next to your spouse, then you would be looking at a stranger and I worry about awkwardness and someone who talks non-stop, lol. Any advice is appreciates.

Hey Chad! That’s a great question – unfortunately I’m not sure I have many words of wisdom there, however you’ll often be looking out the window as opposed to who is in front of you so hopefully that help. As for the awkwardness, I’ll keep my fingers crossed you don’t sit with a chatty cathy haha!

We are booked for October. I am 71 and not sure I could the 300 steps. Are the very steep.

Hi Jean! From what I can recall, they aren’t much steeper than normal stairs though I know some infrastructure changes have occurred so this may have changed. If you’re able to make it, I definitely recommend the climb because the views are absolutely spectacular! However, you can always head right for the waterfalls as they’re on the same elevation as when the train arrives and they’re a spectacular sight 🙂 Hope this helps!

Ride the Rails with the Group of Seven

train tour northern ontario

When the Group of Seven visited Algoma to create some of their most famous work, they got there in a boxcar from Sault Ste. Marie. Today, thanks to the Agawa Canyon Tour Train , you can ride the same rails and see some of the inspirational locations for yourself.

Several members of Canada's Group of Seven painted in the  Algoma region between 1918 and 1923, including Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer. To gain access to this remote region, they rented a boxcar from the Algoma Central Railway. The car was outfitted like a cabin and was shunted to sidings near choice painting locations. From these locations they would set out on foot or canoe to capture this untamed area on canvas. Their paintings brought this vast, rugged and beautiful part of the country to fellow Canadians and the world.

Here are some interesting facts and details that you'll find along your journey:

Mile 76: Mongoose Lake In the fall of 1920 the artists stayed in a cabin on Mongoose Lake instead of the boxcar to sketch and paint. One of these painting sites was discovered as recently as the fall of 2013. Mile 92: Montreal River/Falls/ Hubert The Montreal River attracted MacDonald and he made sketches in the neighborhood of the falls that resulted in his large canvas, Falls, Montreal River . Among all the Group of Seven painters, he responded most deeply to Algoma, creating a magnificent series of large-scale compositions. Mile 113: Agawa Canyon The artists stayed in their boxcar studio in Agawa Canyon to sketch for several days and then, using an Algoma Central Railway hand-car, they ventured north and south to sketch and paint.

Mile 123: Eton and Mile 138: Sand Lake In the fall of 1921 Harris, Lismer and Jackson came north again to sketch and paint in the Eton area, and then moved further north to finish up on Sand Lake.

Mile 195: Franz At the end of their 1921 fall trip, Harris and Jackson decided to travel west along the shore of Lake Superior. They took the ACR north to Franz, where they caught a C.P.R. freight to Schriber where they got off and walked to Rossport, from which point they undertook their adventures along Lake Superior's north shore .

Sault Ste. Marie is privileged with an abundance of artists, festivials, and inspiration alike. On October 15, 2016, the Algoma Fall Festival is hosting "Where the Universe Sings: The Spiritual Journey of Lawren Harris,"  a documentary and exhibition of the most valued artist in Canadian history.

Suggested Days: 13

A sail boat sails past a white and red lighthouse atop a rocky coastline

Welcome to Ontario’s big, beautiful north country – a region rich in rugged beauty and full of opportunities to enjoy the magnificent outdoors. Discover great boreal forests and countless rivers and lakes. Though sparsely populated, the north offers a diverse array of cultural attractions and urban centres close to nature. No matter where you are in this vast land, you’ll find lots to see and do. This fly/drive can be used for RVs or automobiles. The scenic highways are well-connected and easy to navigate.

Toronto and Niagara Falls to Tobermory

Your Ontario adventure starts with Toronto and Niagara Falls .  You’ll head north to  Tobermory , at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.  Bruce Peninsula National Park  offers rugged scenery and hiking trails.  It’s also home to  Fathom Five National Marine Park  – an underwater marine park that preserves shipwrecks and natural diving obstacles for recreational scuba divers.  Try a glass bottom boat tour if you want to stay dry. Overnight in Tobermory.

Manitoulin Island

A two-hour cruise on the  Chi-Cheemaun  ferry takes you from Tobermory to  Manitoulin Island , the world’s largest freshwater island. It’s sparsely populated and an outdoor paradise, with incredible hiking and paddling.  Wikwemikong Tourism  offers visitors unique opportunities to immerse themselves in rich Indigenous history and traditions through nature based and cultural tours. Their guides will take you on a journey through time as you learn of the legends of their people while exploring the vast lands and waters of Wikwemikong. Overnight on Manitoulin Island.

Sault Ste. Marie

You will leave Manitoulin Island on the north side, via a bridge to the mainland and travel west to  Sault Ste. Marie  – a city at the heart of three Great Lakes. Surrounded by spectacular wilderness, “The Soo” makes an ideal starting point for local outdoor excursions and eco-adventures. Get a sense of the area’s pioneering spirit at the  Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre .

Board the  Agawa Canyon Tour Train  for a trip alongside unspoiled northern lakes, awe-inspiring granite rock formations and vast mixed forests of the Canadian Shield. The train operates from late June to early October; fall is one of the best times to visit, when the forest is ablaze with colour. See the sites where Ontario’s famous Group of Seven artists painted their vibrant landscapes. Commentary is provided in six languages including English throughout the coaches and in French, German, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin via wireless headset.

Optional Route : If time does not allow further exploration west along Lake Superior, you could head back east to Sudbury , the urban hub of Northeastern Ontario and an important mining centre. Go underground on a one-of-a-kind mining tour at  Dynamic Earth . Get interactive at  Science North  – a high-tech centre for exploring the mysteries of science – and experience an incredible IMAX 3D film. From here you would continue south to Toronto, via North Bay and Algonquin Park.

Optional Extensions : Book a float plane for a fly-in fishing experience in the wilderness, at a lodge such as  Lodge Eighty Eight  or  Pine Portage Lodge . Feast on a fresh shore lunch, a Northern Ontario tradition.

Lake Superior Coast

If times allows, your journey continues west along shoreline of Lake Superior, a route full of breathtaking scenery, and recognized as one of the “top drives” in Canada. As you drive along the coastline, explore scenic provincial and national parks. Try stand-up paddling or enjoy a sea-kayaking adventure on Lake Superior; companies such as  Naturally Superior Adventures  provide guided options. Discover ancient Ojibway pictograph, hike the spectacular Coastal Trail in  Lake Superior Provincial Park  and paddle along the shoreline in  Pukaskwa National Park . Witness striking sunsets over the world’s largest freshwater lake.

Thunder Bay

Picturesque  Thunder Bay  is the main centre of Northwestern Ontario and the perfect home base for day adventures. Meet voyageurs, traders and Indigenous people reliving the drama of the fur trade at  Fort William Historical Park, the world’s largest reconstructed fur trade post. Choose from variety of sailing, zodiac and catamaran tours, of various durations, with  Sail Superior.  Marvel at spectacular 330 ft (100 m) deep Ouimet Canyon, home to rare Arctic plants or hike to the tip of the Sleeping Giant rock formation. Discover the powerful cataracts of Kakabeka Falls, the ‘Niagara of the North.’

Optional Extensions : Book a float plane for a fly-in fishing experience at a remote fishing lodge such as Wilderness North . Or visit  Quetico Provincial Park , one of the great canoeing and camping destinations in the world.  Further west is the magnificent Lake of the Woods region and  Kenora .

Superior Fall Colours & Northern Ontario by Rail

Roundtrip from Toronto - 5 days - 4 nights group tour.

Sunday September 29 to Thursday October 3, 2024

As seen on TVO’s Tripping Train 185 book now to experience this 5 day 4 nights guided package to enjoy the fall colours of Northern Ontario, on both the rail journey from Toronto to Sudbury and Train #185 (Sudbury – White River) roundtrip with all the details looked after so you can travel roundtrip from Toronto, Ontario during the fall foliage season.

Rail Travel Tours can take you to view the fantastic scenery and the fall colours of Ontario’s Superior region with great heritage experiences on a tour offered nowhere else. We travel roundtrip from Toronto through the Muskoka region and into the rugged beauty of the Canadian Shield starting by train (with access to the dome car) to Sudbury and overnight. The next day here in Sudbury we explore world class attractions such as Dynamic Earth and the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and again overnight here. The following day we board TRAIN #185 or VIA's SUDBURY - WHITE RIVER isolated rail service to travel through the picturesque and rugged Superior Region to White River, where past tours have seen moose in the swamps, bears in the woods and forests full of colour. The trip back to Toronto by motor coach offers an opportunity to visit to more heritage experiences and view some added fall colours.  Bring your camera and a sense of adventure as the fall colours and northern hospitality await you.

What the tour includes:

DAY 1 – All Aboard as we head north from Toronto by train

Morning meet & greet at Toronto’s Union Station (at 8:15 am) to meet your guide(s) and fellow travellers and drop off luggage destined for the Baggage Car that will be claimed at our hotel later today.  After boarding the train, for our journey North to Sudbury, we will enjoy the fall scenery from the large windows from our assigned seats in our Coach or dome car.   The train is a great way to see the landscape of the Muskoka area and Sudbury Basin as your guides point out the highlights.   Arriving in Sudbury we will transfer by motor coach to enjoy a group welcome supper here before transferring to our hotel. Overnight downtown Sudbury. Meals included today: Dinner.

DAY 2 – A full day exploring Sudbury

Enjoy Breakfast at the hotel before our planned visit Sudbury’s Science North with its great displays and wildlife area.  There will be time here to purchase and enjoy lunch here with views of Lake Ramsey. Next, we will visit other heritage attractions including a planned visit to R & R Restored Classic Cars and the Northern Ontario Railway Museum in the northern most tip of Sudbury called Capreol. After our day here we know you have worked up an appetite so as part of the tour the guests will enjoy a home cooked dinner here in Capreol before returning to our hotel that overlooks the city Skyline.   Overnight Sudbury. Meals included today: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 3 – Enjoy more fall colours from Canada’s last Rail Diesel Car train.

We have a full travel day that begins with enjoying breakfast at the hotel.  Today we will travel on VIA’s Rail 's TRAIN 185 Sudbury - White River Rail Diesel Car service on the CPR mainline to White River through the rugged “Superior” Region of Ontario.  Fantastic views of pristine wilderness and small communities that are only accessible by the train we will travel on. Places like Biscotasing where British citizen Archibald Stanley lived as he transformed into the noted naturalist known as Grey Owl. If on time there may be time for the guests to stretch their legs on the platform in the railway divisional point of Chapleau and view the large preserved steam locomotive on display next to the station   After arriving in White River we have a planned community organized “Fall/Potluck Supper” meal (included) provided by the Seniors of the White River Harmony Club.  We will learn about the heritage of this community and their most famous former resident a bear cub named after a World War 1 soldier's home town of "Winnipeg" (later immortalized by an author of children's stories) by visiting the White River Museum.  Overnight in White River. Meals included today: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 4 – Eastbound to again enjoy the scenery from Canada’s last Rail Diesel Car train.

Enjoy some light breakfast on the train as we again travel on TRAIN 186 or VIA Rail’s eastbound Rail Diesel Car remote service to Sudbury again viewing the scenery among the many lakes.  Most guests sit on the opposite side of the train for the trip back to Sudbury. A highlight will be watching for wildlife as the train travels along the South border of the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. The train will again be making stops at many of the isolated communities and properties along the route so we might get to meet some of the locals who rely on this train. Arriving back in Sudbury you will hopefully share past guests’ thoughts that this train may be most scenic and best kept secret rail journey in Northern Ontario.   Free time late this afternoon and evening to enjoy downtown Sudbury, that has many restaurant options for dinner on your own or eat in the hotel restaurant or order in and relax in your hotel room is another option.   Overnight in Sudbury. Meals included today: Breakfast.

The tour starts in downtown Sault Ste. Marie before embarking on the 114-mile excursion. You'll wind through the endless forests of the Canadian Shield, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and finally, the majestic Agawa Canyon - the same landscapes that inspired Canada's famous Group of Seven.

During your ride, you can listen to GPS-triggered commentary on the comfortable coach, which will share information about the area's rich history, including that of the Ojibway, fur traders, and explorers.

Once you arrive at Agawa Canyon Park , you'll have the chance to disembark and explore for 90 minutes. Stretch your legs, enjoy a picnic, visit the park's three waterfalls, or head to the lookout for a panoramic view.

After your adventure in the park, climb back aboard the train to make the 4.5-hour return trip to Sault Ste. Marie.

Tours begin at 8 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. The entire experience takes a total of ten hours, so be prepared to allocate an entire day for it.

Highly lauded as one of the most unique and incredible fall experiences in Canada , tickets for the 2023 season went on sale earlier this year after an outpouring of support and enthusiasm last fall — and they're already selling out, especially on weekends.

What you need to know about Ontario's changes to the Northern Health Travel Grant

Ontario is spending $45m over three years to expand the program.

Northern Ontario residents who need to travel to access health care will receive more provincial assistance starting this fall.

The Ontario government is spending $45 million over three years to expand the Northern Health Travel Grant. While the expansion was initially included in the 2024 Ontario budget, Ontario Health Minister and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones held a news conference in Thunder Bay on Tuesday to provide further details.

The changes to the program include:

  • The introduction of an online application process that includes digital receipt submissions for faster reimbursement;
  • Adding more eligible health care providers and facility locations;
  • Increasing the accommodation allowance from $100 to $175 per night;
  • Reducing the travel distance requirement to be eligible for the overnight accommodation allowance from 200 km to 100 km, and
  • Increasing the total allowance for eight or more nights from $550 to $1,150.

A full list of changes can be found on the Ontario website .

"We know that for too long patients in northern Ontario have faced unique challenges when accessing healthcare," Jones said during a visit to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) on Tuesday morning. "Our investments to expand and enhance the Northern Health Travel Grant will ensure more people in northern Ontario can connect to the specialized care they need when they need it."

Jones added, however, that the grant is "one piece" of the provincial health care system, and said the province is working to increase the system's capacity province-wide.

"Fifty hospitals are, right now, in the process of being built new, renovated or expanded," Jones said. "That is a capital piece that ensures that we will have over 3,000 more hospital beds across Ontario."

"When we do that, of course, we need more health human resources," she said. "So we are expanding and we have expanded access to school in northern Ontario, southern Ontario."

"I'm particularly proud of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. We've had over 100 new seats available for physicians who want to train in northern Ontario, and 60 per cent of those are for primary care family docs. We know that when people train in communities, they tend to stay in those communities."

How this med school is tackling the rural doctor shortage

Paul Carr, a patient family advisor with TBRHSC, said people in the region can face barriers when it comes to accessing the care they need.

"It would be great if patients could access the same level of care and services throughout the province, but we know this is not the case right now," he said. "Some of our patients have to travel to access care, and this can be a daunting experience for some."

"It may be the first time they've ever traveled to an urban centre, and of course it can be expensive," Carr said. "This can be a deterrent to accessing care, as well as an added burden during a very stressful time for both patients and families."

"Many patients rely on the Northern Health Travel Grant program to help provide financial assistance."

In a media release, the province said about 66,000 northern Ontario residents made use of the grant program in 2022-23.
