Sri Lanka is blessed with a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 70Fs throughout most of the year. To soak up some sunshine, be sure to come during the dry seasons (June - August and December – March). The rest of the time it's the monsoon season, so expect rain during this time. Culture and customs

As an important stop on ancient trade routes, there’s a great mix of cultural influences present in modern-day Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists, followed by Tamils (who are mostly Hindu) and a small amount of Christians and Muslims. Various religious festivals and holy times are celebrated regularly in Sri Lanka, from large nationwide holidays to local village celebrations. As a fairly conservative nation, most locals dress modestly and displays of affection are not considered appropriate in public.

The influence of the British is still evident in Sri Lanka’s culture, cuisine, and buildings. Drinking tea and playing cricket are the most obvious remnants of British colonial rule, although you’ll also find country cottages dotted throughout some rural regions with some serving traditional English fare like roast chicken and beef. Travelers will find that most Sri Lankans, despite having little, are quick to share their food and friendship. Known for being hospitable, generous, and kind, when being offered tea or food in someone’s home, it is considered impolite to decline.

Things to try in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chili, garlic, turmeric, and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.

Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster, and squid - or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.

These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.

With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.

Geography and environment

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka lies just under the Indian subcontinent, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Much of Sri Lanka receives a high level of rainfall during the monsoon season, with the dry northern areas being the exception. Due to the high level of rainfall, tropical evergreen forest proliferates around the country. Despite extensive land clearing for agriculture, there are still pockets of national parks and biosphere reserves around the country that hold much flora and fauna, including herds of wild elephants, deer, and a wide range of birds. Sri Lanka’s remaining forests and protected areas are rich in biological diversity and remain popular with tourists looking for wildlife and adventure. 

Sri Lanka’s main cities are typically built up, busy, and increasingly becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan. In comparison to Sri Lanka’s fast-paced, city-dwelling residents, many Sri Lankans still live in villages with simple housing and work predominantly in the agriculture and fishing industries.

History and government

Early history.

Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of Sinhalese tribal groups in the 6th century BC. Buddhism arrived on the island sometime during the 3rd century BC and as a result, the city of Anuradhapura became the capital and center of Buddhism. This Buddhist Kingdom endured years of Tamil raids until Anuradhapura was abandoned in favor of Polonnaruwa in the south. By the 12th century, Tamil rulers had a permanent presence in the north, where Hinduism still flourishes today. 

The harbors of the south soon became important trading centers for Arab traders but by the 16th century a new wave of foreign influence began with the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch. Sri Lanka’s wealth of cinnamon and geographic trading advantage appealed to the Portuguese, who slowly took over the island until the Dutch drove them out in the early 17th century. Remnants of this time can still be found in modern-day Sri Lanka, with colonial forts, cannons, and other ruins dotted throughout the country, especially along the coast. By 1795, the British arrived and captured the island from the Dutch. Sugar, coffee, tea, and rubber plantations were soon established by the British, along with Western schools, churches, and colleges.

Recent history

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was officially granted its independence in 1948 but continued to maintain relatively good relations with the British. By 1960, Ceylon had the world’s first female prime minister and in 1972, the name Ceylon was replaced with Sri Lanka, which had just become a republic (but remained a member of the Commonwealth). These changes in government and moves towards independence were largely Sinhalese-centric, which created some tension with parts of the Tamil population. 

From 1983 to 2009 Sri Lanka endured an intermittent civil war, which resulted in some displacement of people and human rights violations. More recently, parts of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 tsunami, yet Sri Lanka has rebounded with an increasingly stable economy based on agriculture, tourism, and telecommunications. With one of the best-performing stock exchanges in the world, Sri Lanka has emerged from conflict, natural disasters, and colonization to become a rising tourist and economic hotspot.

1. bodhi tree.

Located at the ancient site of Anuradhapura, this sacred fig tree is said to have grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree that Buddha was sitting under when he became enlightened. This holy spot has long been a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans and is now becoming a place of spiritual interest for visitors too.

2. Dewatagaha Mosque

One of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, this prayer place for worshippers of Islam has stood in Colombo for hundreds of years. The striking domes and minarets stand out in the Colombo skyline and provide a spiritual epicenter for Sri Lanka’s Muslims.

3. Temple of the Tooth

This Buddhist temple, located in Kandy, is named for the holy relic (said to be Buddha’s tooth) that is housed inside. It's a World Heritage site that has survived bombings and the ravages of time - visit here to see worshippers deep in prayer under the elaborate golden roof.

4. Dambulla Cave Temple

This well-preserved series of cave temples is brimming with paintings and statues that date all the way back to the 1st century. With colorful depictions of Buddha, Sri Lankan kings, and various Hindu gods and goddesses, this is one of the most elaborate cave complexes in Asia.

5. Adam’s Peak

Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims, Adam’s Peak is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by wildlife reserves, the walking trail leading to the mountain is a stunning walk regardless of religious persuasion. Watching a stirring sunrise from the holy summit is nothing short of magnificent.

6. Polonnaruwa Ruins

These impressive ruins of an ancient kingdom are home to massive palaces, huge statues, imposing temples, and an artificial lake. Although historically and culturally important, witnessing orange-robed monks praying at Gal Vihara (a Buddhist rock temple) is a spiritual moment you won’t soon forget.

7. Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock)

This magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site was once a mountain monastery many centuries ago. The rock inscriptions, paintings, and ancient ‘graffiti’ show insight into the lives of the monks who lived within the caves and grottoes before King Kasyapa took to the throne and established a capital there.

8. Anuradhapura

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are a significant holy place for Sri Lanka Buddhists. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, there are many monasteries surrounding this area of supreme veneration.

9. Munneswaram Temple

This elaborate Hindu temple complex is known for its vibrant festivals in celebration of Navaratri and Sivaratri. During this time, the complex is filled with the buzz of devotees who come to attend daily pujas and bathe in the nearby holy river.

10. Mihintale

If you choose to climb the thousand or so steps to the top of Mihintale’s hill, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as this is the site where Buddhism is said to have originated in Sri Lanka.

Known for its fragrant spices, vibrant fabrics, stunning silver jewelry, and one-of-a-kind antiques, it’s difficult to leave Sri Lanka without a backpack full of mementos. From far-flung rural marketplaces to the boutiques and galleries of Galle and Colombo, shopping in Sri Lanka has something for everyone at a relatively low cost.

Although available all over the country, Kandy is one of the best places to buy locally-made handicrafts. Choose from handmade brass and silver jewelry, vibrant fabric bags and scarves, and batik wall hangings.

What to wear in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is warm. Sri Lanka is very warm. Sri Lanka will have you sweating unless you’re up visiting the tea plantations in the hills, so light, breathable clothing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t wear any clothing depicting the Buddha – this can get you arrested, as can having a Buddha tattoo.

He also assisted others who were NOT on his tour late into the night and again at 3am to ensure transport to airport. No stars!! We were NOT kept informed by Tourradar or Intrepid of the tour cancelation or need to leave country about pending airport closures. Nor have I found any support in seeking an outcome for a refund for the component of the tour that was cancelled.

Unser toller deutsch sprechender Tourguide Indy hat uns jeweils früh am Hotel abgeholt, sicher zu allen Events und abends zum neuen Hotel gebracht. Die Größe der Tour und die geringe erlaubte Geschwindigkeit bringt es mit sich, dass man an manchen Tagen recht lange im Auto verbringt. Um alle im Plan enthaltenen Events mitzumachen, fallen noch Eintrittsgelder von ca. 360 US-Dollar an. Ganz besonders gut hat uns die Aufzuchtstation der Meeresschildkröten gefallen und die Möglichkeit, einige abends frei zu lassen. Bei der Raftingtour an Badeschuhe denken! Es werden längere Wege sonst „barfuß“ über steinige Wege zurück gelegt. Wir haben an manchen Tagen die bessere Hotelkategorie gewählt. So zB das Amaya Lake Ressort, ein sehr schönes weitläufiges Gelände mit vielen Tieren. Oder das Dickwella Ressort & Spa, toll gelegen auf den Klippen zwischen zwei Strandbuchten. Sehr lobenswert war die Kommunikation mit dem Veranstalter vor Ort über die Nachrichtenoption von TourRadar. Binnen weniger Stunden kam eine jeweils sehr konstruktive Rückmeldung. Wir hatten drei zusätzliche Strandtage gebucht und die in Dickwella einlegen können, Das wurde dann flexibel in den Tourablauf geschoben. Der Verkehr ist anders und speziell, folgt aber einer Logik, die die Einheimischen verstehen und umsetzen. Teilweise fahren vier Fahrzeuge nebeneinander. Es passiert aber nichts, was an der Hupe, der gegenseitigen Vorsicht und der ja nicht hohen Geschwindigkeit liegt.

Gal Oya National Park is a place where the unspoiled beauty of nature abounds. It was established back in the year 1954 to protect the catchment of the ‘Senanayake Samudra’, the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka. Emirates Forges New Tourism Alliances with Hong Kong, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka to Elevate Global Travel

Emphasizing its dedication to enhancing tourism throughout its network, Emirates has renewed its strategic collaborations with Tourism Seychelles and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, and has established a new partnership with the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Emirates is reinforcing its commitment to Seychelles by supporting the island’s efforts to promote tourism and trade. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Ahmed Khoory, Emirates’ SVP Commercial – West Asia & Indian Ocean, and Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary of the Tourism Department at Tourism Seychelles, witnessed by Nabil Sultan, Emirates’ Executive Vice President of Passenger Sales and Country Management.

Commenting on the airline’s commitment to promoting Seychelles to its customer base,  Ahmed Khoory, said : “Seychelles is a key leisure destination in our network that we have proudly been operating in since 2005. Our partnership aimed at promoting tourism to the nation goes back to 2013 and we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting its tourism industry. Seychelles is a tourist destination which is highly popular amongst travellers from key markets in our network and we are proud to play a role in driving traffic flows to the island through our efforts.”

Per the agreement, Emirates will aid travel agents and tour operators in key markets to promote Seychelles as a leisure destination. This support includes developing special holiday packages, offering marketing support, and organizing familiarization trips to enhance its global appeal.

Furthermore, Emirates has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to promote tourism in Sri Lanka.

This MoU was also signed by Ahmed Khoory, alongside Chalaka Gajabahu, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, in the presence of the Honourable Harin Fernando, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, and Nabil Sultan.

Marking its 38th year in Sri Lanka, Emirates continues to support the nation’s tourism initiatives through creating special packages and organizing familiarization trips from key markets to broaden the appeal to various audiences. As part of its comprehensive support for the region, Emirates will work closely with travel agents and tour operators in strategic markets to showcase Sri Lanka’s attractions to its worldwide customers.

  Ahmed Khoory said:  “Sri Lanka is one of the very first destinations Emirates launched operations to so our 38-year relationship with the country is one we take special pride in.  We remain committed to deepening our relationship and playing a key role in promoting Sri Lanka as a key leisure destination in our network and contributing to the tourism and trade sectors through our passenger and cargo services.”

Emirates began its operations in Sri Lanka in 1986 and currently offers two daily direct flights to Colombo on the Boeing 777-300ER, along with an additional daily flight that stops in Male. It is the sole international airline providing First Class service to the country, ensuring passengers experience high-end products and exceptional comfort both in the air and on the ground.

Additionally, Emirates has teamed up with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to enhance inbound tourism to Hong Kong from strategic markets in the Middle East and Europe.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Orhan Abbas, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations Far East, and Becky IP, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. This agreement underscores Emirates’ dedication to supporting the revival of Hong Kong’s travel and tourism sector and outlines several joint initiatives aimed at boosting trade and tourism to the city.

Orhan Abbas commented:  “We are delighted to establish this strategic partnership with the HKTB to spur growth in the local travel and tourism industry. The city has always been popular among our global customers and it continues to attract visitors all year round thanks to its unique cosmopolitan attractions. Through our extensive global network, we will work closely with the HKTB to introduce travellers from key Middle East and GCC markets to the vibrant culture, Michelin-starred culinary scene and dynamic attractions that Hong Kong has to offer.”

These initiatives include organizing familiarization trips, executing a comprehensive promotional plan, and launching targeted advertising campaigns.

In March, Japan astounds with over 3M international arrivals, leading global travel trends with soaring momentum, according to Mastercard.

The travel industry is reaching new heights in 2024, with tourism spending and passenger traffic skyrocketing, as revealed in the latest Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) report. The fifth annual report, “Travel Trends 2024: Breaking Boundaries,” explores the dynamic travel landscape across 74 markets, including 13 in the Asia Pacific region (APAC).

Record-Breaking Travel Trends

Despite varying exchange rates and affordability challenges, the travel industry is booming. Nine of the last ten record-setting days in global cruise and airline spending have occurred this year. The MEI predicts this trend will continue as consumers prioritize meaningful experiences, allocating more of their budgets to travel.

Key Insights from MEI’s Data

The report draws on Mastercard’s aggregated and anonymized transaction data, including Mastercard SpendingPulse™ and third-party sources, offering a deep dive into 2024’s tourism trends. Notable themes in APAC include:

• Trending APAC Destinations : APAC accounts for half of the top ten travel hot spots, ranked by the increase in tourism transactions over the past year.
• Japan Leads the Way : Japan is the top trending destination globally, with a 0.9% increase in tourism transactions compared to Ireland’s 0.4%. In March 2024, Japan welcomed 3,081,600 international visitors, the highest ever recorded, driven by a favorable exchange rate and a weak yen.
• Rising APAC Passenger Traffic : Intra-regional travel is rebounding, with top summer destinations for Singapore travelers including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Perth.
• Thailand’s Tourism Recovery : Thailand’s tourism is expected to fully recover in 2024, with visitor arrivals now only 7% below pre-pandemic levels. Inbound flight traffic from South Asia and ASEAN is nearly 20% above 2019 levels.

“Consumers in the Asia Pacific region have an intense desire and willingness to travel and are becoming increasingly savvy to ensure they get the best value and unforgettable experiences from their trips,”  said David Mann, chief economist, Asia Pacific, Mastercard . “For tourism authorities, retailers, the hospitality and F&B sectors, the bottom line is that costs matter. In today’s economy, foreign exchange rates and spending power have become vital components in driving a traveler’s assessment of value when they are making their plans. This suggests that businesses targeting tourism dollars need to review their current strategies, and shift them if necessary, to maintain their appeal to travelers.”

Summer Hot Spots and Global Trends

Looking ahead, Munich is set to be the top summer destination due to the UEFA EURO 2024 football championship. Tokyo, Bali, and Bangkok also rank among the top ten cities gaining momentum.

Chinese Mainland Travel Dynamics

• Domestic Tourism Surge : Domestic air passenger traffic in the Chinese Mainland has fully normalized, surpassing 2019 levels and benefiting local businesses.
• International Travel Recovery : Outbound travel is at 80.3% of 2019 levels, with growth expected to continue, supported by visa exemptions and increased international flight capacity.

Indian Travel Boom

A growing middle class, increased route capacity, and a strong travel desire mean 2024 will see more Indians traveling internationally than ever before. In the first quarter of 2024, 97 million passengers passed through Indian airports, a number that would have taken a year to achieve a decade ago.

• Domestic and International Traffic Growth : Domestic passenger traffic is up 21% compared to 2019, while international traffic is up 4%.
• Significant Increases in Key Markets : Indian travelers to Japan, Vietnam, and the U.S. have increased dramatically, with notable rises in visitor numbers.

Longer Leisure Stays

In APAC (excluding ANZ), tourists are extending their trips by an average of 1.2 days to 7.4 days, driven by affordability, favorable exchange rates, and warm weather. This trend benefits local economies as longer stays generally translate to more spending per trip.

Thrill Seekers and Experience Spending

Globally, consumers continue to prioritize experiences over material goods. Spending on experiences and nightlife has reached its highest point in five years, making up 12% of tourism sales. Australian tourists are the highest spenders in this category, with 19% of their travel budget going towards experiences and nightlife.

Casual Over Luxury

Tourists prefer casual fashion and food, except where luxury offers exceptional value. Luxury fashion sales have soared in Japan and Hong Kong SAR, driven by a weak yen and late reopening respectively. Meanwhile, fine dining is thriving in Australia, India, and Thailand, outperforming casual dining.

These trends highlight the evolving preferences and behaviors of travelers, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead in the global travel sector.

“Amidst the evolving tourism landscape and continuing surge in travel throughout 2024, the Mastercard Economics Institute aids businesses and policymakers in translating macroeconomic forces and data insights into actionable strategies at the country, category, and company levels, in addition to counseling on possible scenarios and the implications they have on demand,”  added Mann .

Spirit Airlines is set to introduce daily nonstop flights between the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in southeast Florida. The service, beginning on August 14, marks the first daily nonstop air service to Fort Lauderdale from Rochester since 2008, as announced by Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. This new route is poised to significantly enhance travel options for residents of the Monroe County and Finger Lakes regions, providing greater access to one of the most popular travel destinations.

Increased Travel Convenience

Adam Bello emphasized that Florida is a highly sought-after destination for local residents, whether for family vacations to the beautiful beaches of southeast Florida or for catching Caribbean cruises. The introduction of Spirit Airlines’ daily service to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is expected to bring increased convenience and accessibility to Rochester passengers. This service expansion complements Spirit Airlines’ existing daily nonstop flights to Orlando International Airport and seasonal nonstop service to Myrtle Beach International Airport from Rochester.

Impact on Tourism and Economy

The addition of the Rochester-Fort Lauderdale route will introduce over 1,200 weekly seats to Florida, enhancing travel opportunities for the local community. While the service is expected to be daily, the specific days may vary in November, December, and January. Spirit Airlines, as the largest carrier operating out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, offers extensive connectivity to popular destinations such as Cancun, San Juan, and various Caribbean and Central American beach locales. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Southwest Airlines’ recent introduction of nonstop service between Rochester and the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, further expanding the travel options available to Rochester residents.

The introduction of Spirit Airlines’ daily nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale is expected to have a positive impact on tourism and travel for Rochester residents, providing more options for affordable and convenient travel to popular destinations. The Union Ministry of Tourism is participating in IMEX, Frankfurt from 14th-16th May 2024 to showcase India as a leading MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) destination to the global market.

IMEX serves as a pivotal platform for the global events industry, offering professionals valuable opportunities to enhance businesses and gain crucial insights.

The Indian tourism ministry has identified MICE as a key sector to combat seasonality and promote India as a year-round destination.

To support this effort, the Ministry has launched ‘Meet in India’ as a specialized sub-brand within the ‘Incredible India’ campaign.

This sub-brand aims to bolster promotional initiatives, highlighting India as an attractive MICE destination with excellent connectivity, state-of-the-art infrastructure, a dynamic knowledge base, and a wealth of unique tourist attractions.

During India’s G20 Presidency, over 200 meetings were held in 56 cities across the nation, boosting both domestic and international tourism.

This platform effectively showcased India’s strong MICE infrastructure and its rich cultural and natural heritage on a global stage.

Building on this momentum, the Ministry of Tourism is striving to position India as a premier global hub for MICE activities.

Significant progress has been made in improving internal connectivity by air and road, easing travel within the country, and opening new facilities for conferences and conventions, positioning India as a top destination.

In 2022, India was ranked 9th in the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) ranking of countries in the Asia Pacific region.

Today, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) along with Alipay+, managed by Ant International, revealed plans to enhance their collaboration. This initiative includes several new features designed to draw more visitors to Thailand and improve their experience, especially in light of the increasing travel demand.

Mr. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific, said  “The partnership with Alipay+ plays an important role in attracting tourists and ensuring they enjoy their Thai experience; through such partnerships, TAT is on track to meet 2024 goals. We are glad to see Alipay+ transactions growing rapidly. With even more Alipay+ coverage acceptance, the transactions will only grow, especially in smaller cities, stimulating the economy, particularly for SMEs, across Thailand. We’re taking the next step to strengthen our partnership with the new digital innovations for Chinese tourists, the top market for Thailand, and continue to expand these innovations to more tourists in future.”

Digital Innovations Boost Travel Experience in Thailand

Thailand remains a preferred destination for Chinese tourists. TAT reports that from January to April 2024, approximately 2.35 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand. During the Labor Day holiday in 2024, transaction data from Alipay, a partner of Alipay+, highlighted that Thailand is the most popular Southeast Asian destination for these tourists, showing a 161% transaction increase over the previous year and exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

TAT plans to introduce Alipay+ D-hub and the Amazing Thailand e-Card on Alipay initially for Chinese tourists, with plans to expand availability to other Alipay+ payment partners.

TAT is pioneering globally with the launch of Alipay+ D-hub. This in-app mini program offers a wealth of travel information, including local recommendations, and guides to cities and provinces in Thailand.

The Amazing Thailand e-Card aims to connect tourists with local businesses, boosting visibility for Thailand’s tourism sector and allowing tourists to discover new merchants and access exclusive deals.

At the start of 2024, Alipay+ launched the Alipay+ D-store in Thailand. This digital platform enables both locals and tourists to scan a QR code at a store, customize their order, and pay directly via their mobile devices. Notable participating merchants include international and local F&B outlets like Dairy Queen and Burger King.

Seamless Payments Across Thailand with Alipay+

From January to April 2024, Thailand welcomed over 12 million international visitors.

Additionally, transaction volumes through Alipay+ surged by 70% in the first four months of 2024, compared to the last four months of 2023. The majority of this spending involved Alipay (Chinese mainland), Touch ‘n Go eWallet (Malaysia), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR), and Kakao Pay (South Korea). Coordinated marketing strategies have led to a 52% rise in Alipay+ transactions during the 2024 Songkran festival, compared to the previous month.

Alipay+ is expanding its acceptance across Thailand, covering over 400,000 merchants nationwide, including remote areas. This expansion enhances the travel experience by facilitating easier payments throughout the country.

New merchants on the Alipay+ network include various F&B outlets, wellness centers, and attractions such as the food stalls at CentralWorld, Let’s Relax Spa, and the Grand Palace. Alipay+ will also be available soon on the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), providing a convenient payment option for transportation.

A Thailand+ Experience Campaign

TAT and Alipay+ are also launching the “A Thailand+ Experience” campaign to showcase the diverse and unique experiences available to tourists in Thailand. This campaign, coupled with seamless mobile payments and digital innovations, aims to enrich the tourist experience. Additionally, selected Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) will spotlight their preferred local merchants in secondary cities, which will be featured on the TAT website and the Alipay+ D-hub. National voucher packs will also encourage exploration and spending in these areas.

Since its inception by Ant International in 2020, Alipay+ now connects more than 88 million merchants across 57 countries to 1.5 billion consumer accounts linked to over 25 e-wallets and banking apps, simplifying global travel and payment for consumers and helping merchants broaden their international consumer engagement and digital marketing strategies.
