Travel Bar Set Buying Guide

Every travel bar set is unique because they differ in design, size, tools, etc. Choosing one can get a bit overwhelming. So, before you purchase a travel bar set, you should know well what to be considered. Here are some factors you should look into.

Portability

Travelling essentials

Since travel bar sets are designed for carrying around during travel, choose one that you find most comfortable carrying. Some travel bar sets are designed to include bottles, so if you’re going for a lighter pack, choose one that doesn’t have a bottle compartment.

Also, go for travel bar sets with tight and secure straps to keep the tools in place. You can choose whether you want the exterior to have a handle or a strap.

Travel bar sets can get a bit pricey. To make your purchase worth the money, check the materials used. If you want your travel bar set to last long, you should opt for sets made of genuine black leather and a hard case. Also, check the quality of the tools inside. You wouldn’t want to buy a  flimsy product that’ll last for a couple of months.

Combination lock with numbers written on a paper

Stolen tools or liquors inside the travel bar set are possible. To avoid this kind of misfortune, consider getting a travel bar set with a case that includes a combination lock. It is much safer from thieves, and your liquors should be protected in a case, whereas if you choose to keep them outside, it might break.

Most importantly, you need to look at the tools inside the kit or case. The tools that come with the set are different for each product. Some products contain more tools in various materials.

While it is unnecessary to buy a travel bar set that includes many tools, it would be smart for you to know what is contained inside. Make sure the product you want has the right tools you need.

Make your travel experience even better with the company of a travel bar set. Owning one is both fun and satisfying, so you get to enjoy your favorite drink anytime, anywhere. It feels superb to carry a whole bar in one hand, shaker, jigger , and muddler .

Do you own a travel bar set? How is your experience so far? Let us know in the comments.

What to Look for in a Travel Bar Set

A well-stocked travel bar should contain everything you need to make your favorite drink. Maybe that’s as simple as a bar spoon, shaker, and jigger. If you’re looking to seriously entertain on the go, opt for a travel bar packed with everything from Hawthorne strainers to corkscrews to olive spears.

“I suggest purchasing a bar tool bag that has slits that fit most tools, including strainers, jiggers, bar spoons and shaker tins,” says Ashly Levi , bartender and mezcalier at Miss Agave. “If you don’t have one available, you can store the jigger, smaller bar spoons, bottle openers and julep strainers inside the tins to keep it all together."

Portability

Consider how portable your travel bar is. Working bartenders may want a roll-up bag, so they can tote their tools from home to shift (this is also a great option if you’re headed to a hotel or party where all your bar tools will be needed). Boxed options are great for train travel or picnics and do a great job of protecting the contents, but they can be cumbersome to carry.

Bottle Storage

Some travel bars are outfitted to carry just a small flask, while others have the capacity to store up to three or four of your favorite bottles. Pick a travel bar accordingly. If you simply want to sip a dram on the go out of decent glassware, the former type of travel bar will suffice. If you’re looking to craft Negronis, martinis, or other cocktails, consider a travel bar with a capacity that can hold all your ingredients.

What is included in a travel bar set?

A travel bar will include all the tools you need to craft cocktails on the go. Depending on the size of the bar, that can include a shaker and jigger or a full spate of bar tools. Often the travel bar set have space for bottles, too.

How portable is a travel bar set?

Travel bar sets are designed to be toted around. Some will be like small, hardshell suitcases complete with handles and locks. Some come in the form of a backpack, while others are rolled up and can be carried around like a briefcase.

Why use a travel bar set?

Travel bar sets are excellent in a range of situations; bring one on a picnic, take it on your next vacation, or pack it for your next backyard drinks. These tiny bars also double as an excellent option for those living in small spaces and don’t have room for a full setup.

How do you clean a travel bar set?

"To keep your bar tools clean, simply rinsing and washing with warm water and a bit of Dawn soap can do the trick when you’re on the go,” says Levi. “You can bring this in a travel-size container. The key is to dry it all really well using a microfiber towel, which is easy to keep on you when traveling.”

Some of the other experts we consulted get extra points for the unique methods they employ to keep their bar tools sparkly, such as Ervin Machado , Certified Sommelier and Beverage Director at Big Time Restaurant Group. "I use soap and water to clean my tools on the go," he says, "but I always polish them with vodka for extra shine."

Kate Dingwall  is a sommelier and spirits writer. She has been writing about the bar and spirits world for five years and has her BarSmarts and WSET certification. She loves a good martini—wherever she may be.

This roundup was updated by Amanda Lauren , an experienced lifestyle writer who loves a good cocktail no matter where she is. She prefers bourbon to vodka.

  • Trav-L-Bar Vinyl 2-Bottle Travel Bar – Best Travel Bar Sets for Liquor Drinkers
  • Concession Express Portable Travel Bar – Best Traveling Bar Sets for an Impromptu Party
  • Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set – Best Value Portable Cocktail Bar

1 Trav-L-Bar Vinyl 2-Bottle Travel Bar – Best Travel Bar Sets for Liquor Drinkers

The first set we are going to look at is the most expensive travel cocktail kit in our review. But, it has some nice details that you may find worth the price tag.

For liquor lovers…

This is definitely one of the best travel bar sets if you love your liquor. For example, the 9” W x 13” H x 5.5” D case has space for two 750 ml bottles. The Travel Bar comes with two metal cups, a 1.5 and 0.75-ounce double-sided jigger, and a wood-handle opener.

The metal cups measure five ounces each. They are the perfect size for a spirit straight up or on the rocks. And, you can be extra precise with the jigger. The bar set also comes with a gift box. However, don’t give it to the wine lovers in your life. It does not include a corkscrew.

Getting down to business…

The style of this case mimics the sleek and classy look of a briefcase. The exterior is made of black padded vinyl that is similar to leather. In addition, the interior is lined with gray suede to protect your bottles.

In the same vein, the Trav-L-Bar Vinyl 2-Bottle Travel Bar has a combination lock for tight security . Your favorite liquor will always be comfortable and safe during your trip.

This case feels at home anywhere from a swanky ski resort to your friend’s bachelor pad. It’s a great companion when you want to travel light and only need the basics.

Trav-L-Bar Vinyl 2-Bottle Travel Bar

  • Can hold two standard-sized bottles.
  • Includes cups.
  • Exterior lock.
  • Well constructed.
  • Not real leather.
  • No wine opener .
  • Not tall enough for some bottles.

2 Concession Express Portable Travel Bar – Best Traveling Bar Sets for an Impromptu Party

The Concession Express Portable Travel Bar also comes in a black case. Most importantly, it could be one of the best impromptu party traveling bar sets.

It includes a shiny metal serving tray and two martini glasses . In addition, the vinyl case has an executive-style look that will fit in anywhere and would make a great gift for a groomsman.

Everything you need…

This portable travel bar will help ensure you wow the crowds with your specialty cocktails. For example, it has three divided spaces to hold different liquors. Each space can hold a fifth-sized bottle.

It’s well known that you need to use precise measurements to make the best tasting cocktails . Adding a splash too much of an ingredient can throw off the balance of flavor. However, this bar set takes that into consideration.

The 13” W x 5.5” H x 12” D Concession Express Portable Travel Bar includes a 1.5 and 0.75-ounce jigger. It also has a wood-handle opener and includes two speed pourers.

The art of mixing…

Speed pourers are a common tool seen in professional bar environments. They fit into the mouth of most liquor bottles. Above all, they help you pour shots quickly and accurately. A speed pourer eliminates the need for a jigger. You can simply count the seconds of your pour to know how much liquor it contains.

You can leave this bar set behind at a pre-game without worrying about your booze. The case features a combination lock. Similarly, the gray suede interior has elastic straps to make sure your tools stay safe.

Concession Express Portable Travel Bar

  • Comes with glassware and tray.
  • Combination lock.
  • Includes pour spouts.
  • Case feels sturdy and strong.
  • Made of vinyl.
  • Elastic straps break easily.
  • No corkscrew.

3 Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set – Best Value Portable Cocktail Bar

The Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set is the most affordable portable cocktail bar of the three. And it includes seven professional tools. The lower price tag definitely does not correlate to the quality.

This case is smaller than the other options. It is cylindrical and measures 11.875” H x 6.5” D. However, it’s the perfect size to take with you anywhere. It even has a convenient carrying strap.

Perfect for travel…

The Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set has a black leatherette exterior. The inside is lined with black velvet. In addition, there are leatherette straps to keep your tools in place. In the same vein, the case has a double top and base to protect the contents from damage. It closes with two high-quality Velcro straps.

This product really does contain everything you need to make cocktails like a professional. For example, ice tongs and a bar spoon keep things sanitary.

Strain away…

The muddler and the strainer will help you get the flavor out of solid ingredients. Furthermore, the 1.5 and 0.75-ounce double-sided jigger will ensure precise measurements.

All you need to add is liquor, ice, and your own glassware. The set even includes an 18-ounce shaker.

This is the only travel bar we have looked at that includes a corkscrew. As a result, it could be a great beginning to a home cocktail setup.

Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set

  • Sleek exterior.
  • Good size for travel.
  • Includes a lot of tools.
  • An affordable option.
  • Made of faux-leather.
  • No exterior lock.

Best Travel Bar Sets Buying Guide

Best Travel Bar Sets Guide

As you can see above, portable bars come in many varieties. And, choosing the right travel set can make or break your vacation happy hour.

There’s nothing worse than having a craving and not being able to make your favorite drink. It’s up to you to decide what is critical to have on-hand. For example, everyone has different staples, and they require different tools.

There’s more to the best travel bars than meets the eye. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to keep in mind when making your purchase.

Above all, you need to make sure that the portable travel bar you select has all the tools you need on a regular basis. It’s annoying to have to add things to your set because it is lacking. In addition, you may not be able to secure extra tools as safely as original ones. They have the potential to break glasses or liquor during transit.

Some kits we looked at included more tools than others. However, it’s not always necessary to have all the gadgets. If you like to drink whiskey on the rocks, you don’t need a complicated cocktail set. Similarly, it is especially important for wine drinkers to make sure there is a corkscrew included. Many kits seem to be lacking this bar essential.

Best Travel Bar Sets Safety

The security of the travel bar set you select is critical if you have expensive taste. For instance, you don’t want your expensive spirits disappearing during an event.

In some cases, we looked at have room for liquor bottles inside. In addition, they feature combination locks on the outside to secure the contents.

Storing your liquor outside your travel set opens the door to potential problems. For example, bottles are more susceptible to breaking when they aren’t held down in a case.

Portability

These sets are designed for travel. Therefore, they must be practical to take on the go. But, larger cases can get heavy, especially when bottles are inside, so it’s best to avoid those with heavier bottles included if you are traveling.

Furthermore, some cases do not have secure straps on the interior. The contents will get shaken up in bumpy conditions.

Portable bars usually have handles or straps on the outside. You may find that you prefer one over the other.

A travel bar set needs to be durable. All the options we looked at are made of synthetic material that resembles black leather. As a result, they are resistant to wear and scratches.

However, some sets are of higher quality than others. A strong case should be able to withstand years of heavy use.

Finally, you need to consider how much money you are willing to invest in a portable bar. Is this something that you plan to use every weekend? You probably want to splurge on a high-quality set that ticks all of your boxes.

But, more expensive options are not always better. The best travel bar sets should fit seamlessly into your life without emptying your wallet.

Barmasters Pro Bar Travel Set

This bar set is the most affordable one we have looked at. But, it contains a lot of professional tools. The interior is even lined with velvet for an extra luxurious feel. The small black case is sleek and stylish. It has a strap that you can use to carry it over your shoulder. And, both the top and bottom are reinforced.

However, don’t forget to plan, or you may find yourself drinking out of the shaker.

Happy partying!

Travelbar Takes The BC Bar Experience On The Road

Hospitality Industry Entrepreneurs Build A Bar On Wheels With A Brick-And Mortar Feel

travel bar.ca reviews

Bryce LaCouvée (left) and Brennan Hinchsliff built TravelBar during the pandemic, offering a safe and fun alternative to brick-and-mortar bar establishments

LANTZVILLE – Brennan Hinchsliff and Bryce LaCouvée had a simple but unique idea.

Buy a Travelaire Camper Trailer built in the ’70s, hollow it out, and turn it into a fully functioning mobile bar. On its face, you’d think something like the COVID-19 pandemic would be the worst possible occurrence for such a business concept, but in fact, it was this global event that pushed the duo into the business in the first place. And thus, TravelBar was born.

Both friends came with hospitality industry know-how in Nanaimo, with a combined fourteen years of experience bartending and managing local popular hotspots; Brennan at LevelTwo Nightclub and The Queen’s , Bryce at Old City Station Pub and Carlos O’Brian’s . When COVID-19 reared its ugly head, things got difficult for everyone, but the team was prepared to adapt.

travel bar.ca reviews

The ‘70s-era Travelaire Camper Trailer comes complete with taps and kegs, unlimited drink mixes, garnishes, ice, and a full sound system and microphone

“When jobs became scarce in Spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, we used our spare time and savings to build TravelBar,” explains Brennan. “So, as far as COVID goes, it was sort of the main overarching reason we did it in the first place. With Travel-Bar, you can actually throw a COVID-safe event, as it’s almost always outdoors. We also have tons of COVID safety measures, and we’re Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) certified, which was a significant challenge, but necessary for us to hit the road.”

TravelBar operates just like any neighborhood brick-and-mortar bar, only streamlined. It comes fully-equipped with taps and kegs, unlimited drink mixes, garnishes, plenty of ice, and even a full sound system and microphone for karaoke. Also, vitally, a couple of fully licensed bartenders. The kicker, it can go nearly anywhere you want it to be.

When life in the province becomes more normal, Bryce and Brennan hope to begin throwing their own events, collaborating with local breweries, businesses, gatherings, and festivals

Notes Bryce, “All you need to do is buy the liquor, which we consult closely on to make sure you get all the right stuff and proper licensing, and TravelBar handles the rest.”

As we get closer to increasingly effective therapies and promising news on vaccines, both entrepreneurs are looking to the future of TravelBar. When life in the province becomes more normal, they hope to start throwing their own events, and collaborating with local breweries, businesses, gatherings, and festivals.

Until then, Brennan and Bryce see TravelBar as an escape from the stresses of isolation people have been experiencing since social norms changed so drastically. The team has a keen understanding of what it takes to host a fun event with TravelBar, providing the full BC bar feel wherever it’s desired, from fancy cocktails events to fresh tapped local beer, with their excellent service on the menu.

Concludes Brennan, “Our whole mantra is to provide the Vancouver Island Experience. It’s the most beautiful and exciting place in the world and we want to be a business that is totally a part of that.”

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is a Keeper: TV Review

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

The Best Shampoo Bars for Every Hair Type

By Julia Eskins

Tested and Reviewed The Best Shampoo Bars for Every Hair Type

As more people make an effort to cut down on single-use plastics , the once humble shampoo bar has been given a salon-worthy upgrade. There are dozens of high-quality and solid shampoos on the market today, inspiring even more of us to ditch traditional bottled shampoo once and for all. For travelers, there’s even more incentive to get on board: Doing away with liquids means less hassle while going through security and zero risk of leakage in your suitcase or backpack . And, since most bars are formulated to be concentrated, waterless, and biodegradable, they tend to last twice as long and are gentler on the planet than their mini bottled counterparts.

Fortunately, as interest grows, brands are creating shampoo bars tailored to different hair types and preferences—whether you have color-treated tresses or fine strands in need of some oomph. I tested and reviewed a dozen shampoo bars to see which ones worked best, so you can have more good hair days (and a smaller carbon footprint) on-the-go. (For reference, I have fine, color-treated hair that’s prone to breakage.) Below, the best shampoo bars to add to your Dopp kit .

Unwrapped Life The Stimulator Shampoo Bar

Best all around

A thick lather and an invigorating tingling sensation make shampooing with Unwrapped Life’s Stimulator bar a true joy. My hair felt clean, hydrated, and weightless after one wash, and didn’t feel greasy until four days later (a rarity for me). Formulated to promote scalp health, this bar uses French green clay to clear dirt and impurities and matcha green tea to improve circulation and stimulate skin’s healthy cell turnover. If you plan to travel with your bars, grab the set that comes with the matte-gold travel tins, which are super lightweight and look sleek in your Dopp kit .

J.R. Liggett Original Formula Shampoo Bar

Best multi-tasker

J.R. Liggett’s multi-tasking bars are ideal for camping or backpacking trips . They contain 100 percent vegetable oil (coconut, castor, and olive oils) and work for all hair types. Plus, they can be used as body soap, for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items like socks and underwear. I especially love the travel-ready original bar, which comes with a small water-repellant and washable pouch, as well as a paper mat that wraps around three sides of the bar so that it doesn’t pick up any debris along the way.

By Humankind Shampoo Bar

Best for sensitive scalps

By Humankind’s shampoo bars are cold-processed to allow the formulation to retain more glycerine, an ingredient that helps moderate the pH of sensitive skin. Each bar has a five-week curing period, allowing any excess water to evaporate. The result is a dense bar that keeps its shape over time and a plant-based formula that doesn’t strip your hair of its natural oils. Keep in mind that this bar doesn’t leave your hair feeling squeaky clean off the bat—it might take your scalp a few showers to adjust.

HiBar Volumize Shampoo Bar

Best for fine hair

HiBar’s shampoo bars feature a cylinder shape with an angled edge, making them easier to apply directly to the scalp, and a flat base that allows the bar to be stored upright when not in use. The brand’s volumizing shampoo bar is a standout for fine hair. The bar contains African dates and vitamin B5 to boost body and tame frizz. And it even works for those following the Curly Girl Method, which encourages the use of sulfate-free shampoos to smooth and define waves, coils, and curls.

Ethique Frizz Wrangler

Best for curly hair

In 2019 alone, Ethique’s customers helped save 2.9 million liters of water from being wasted, in addition to countless plastic bottles. The brand’s eco-friendly ethos includes planting a tree for every order and using compostable packaging. Its waterless shampoo bars also deliver exceptional results. The brand makes bars for all hair types, but the frizz-taming shampoo bar is a standout for those with curly or wavy hair. It contains fair trade Samoan coconut oil and coconut butter to help smooth flyaways and enhance your hair’s natural shape and texture.

Attitude Leaves Bar Detox Shampoo

Best for oily hair

Rich in yellow clay, a mineral-based active ingredient that helps protect hair while absorbing excess oil, Attitude’s detox shampoo bar was made to tackle greasy strands. This lightly fragranced bar lathers well, lasts long (according to the brand, one bar equals two standard-sized bottles of shampoo), and leaves your hair feeling deeply cleansed and fluffy. As a bonus, Attitude works with One Tree Planted and Eden Reforestation products to plant a tree for every bar sold.

Odacité 552M Soap Free Shampoo Bar

Best for color-treated hair

Named for the 552 million plastic shampoo bottles that end up in U.S. landfills every year, Odacité’s 552M shampoo bar offers a pollution-free alternative to professional-quality shampoo. The soap-free formulation, made with argan and castor oils, is safe for color-treated hair, but also works well on untreated hair of most types (thin, curly, straight, or coarse). I found applying the bar directly to my scalp created a rich lather, and I loved the refreshing citrus aroma. The results were bouncy, silky-soft locks that didn’t feel stripped of their natural oils.

Klorane Hair Shampoo Bar

Best for damaged hair

As a fan of the French brand Klorane, I was happy to see that they offer a solid version of their leading shampoo. Enriched with mango butter, which is packed with vitamins A and E, it fortifies strands to reduce breakage and smooth split ends. Ideal for thin hair or ends that have been damaged from hot tools or bleaching, this bar left my hair feeling ultra-nourished without the heaviness that comes with your typical moisturizing shampoos. Those wanting a generous lather should first lather the bar in their hands before applying it to their scalp, as it tends to not get as foamy as other solid shampoos.

Peach Strengthening Shampoo Bar

Best for detangling

While no shampoo bar will cure thinning hair, Peach’s strengthening bar is designed to nourish and fortify weak strands. My hair is prone to split ends, so I was especially drawn to this bar, which uses monoi oil (made from soaking petals of Tahitian gardenias in coconut oil) to improve hair elasticity. The moisturizing base of coconut oil and shea butter helps to detangle and smooth hair, so I was able to easily brush out my wet hair without causing further damage.

Abhati Suisse Manali Moisturizing Shampoo Bar

Best for dull hair

Abhati Suisse Manali’s bar is one of the few shampoos that actually leaves my hair looking visibly shiny. Not-so-coincidentally, the brand’s name means “shine” in Sanskrit. Designed with ayurvedic principles in mind, the Manali bar’s pH-balanced formula uses nourishing cannabis seed oil, elderberry, and amino-rich spirulina extract to make dull hair look more radiant. This bar doesn’t contain any synthetic additives or fragrances, but has a pleasant floral scent thanks to botanicals like gardenia extract. All the plant ingredients are ethically sourced through agricultural partnerships with tribal communities around the Indian Himalayas.

London’s Vibrant Soho Neighborhood Gets a New Hotel — With a Rooftop Bar, Maximalist Rooms, and a Great Restaurant

The Broadwick Soho is steps from London’s best theaters, bars, and restaurants.

Food and Drink

Activities and amenities, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Broadwick Soho

Of the hundreds of artworks scattered across the Broadwick Soho in London’s Soho, the most valuable might be those by Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and Bridget Riley. But the most precious is easily overlooked. To the side of the onyx-topped bar counter at rooftop cocktail spot Flute, there’s a photo from around 1980 showing a family of three dressed as sparkly showmen, ready to perform a magic trick. The parents were the proprietors of Mon Ami seaside hotel in England’s Bournemouth, which would later go bust when budget air travel allowed Brits to sun themselves in the more reliable heat of southern Spain. Despite growing up in penury following his family’s bankruptcy, their son, Noel Hayden, made a fortune in tech. This newly opened hotel — his first hospitality venture — is a love letter to his dad, Noel Senior, and mom, Jackie.

I was predisposed to the place as soon as I heard that story, but even without it, I would have quickly warmed to this distinctive property. Designed by locally based Swedish fantasist Martin Brudnizki, it emphasizes maximalism and English eccentricity. For the opening, two colossal, besuited, bipedal elephants were placed on plinths on the front of the property. Every color and pattern has its place: pastel pinks predominate; bathrooms might feature bright-blue leopard print. Over a drink by the fireplace at residents-only lounge The Nook, the hotel’s manager David Monson told me Hayden had asked Brudnizki to create “a timeless home from home.” The result may be more kitsch and quirky than such a brief would typically indicate, but then again, Monson explained Broadwick Soho’s figurative homeowner would be someone suitably outré and fabulous — when we discussed possible occupants, Iris Apfel came up.

That sense of theatrically sits easily here: the hotel is minutes away from much of the West End (London’s Broadway), and Soho has always sheltered the city’s creatives, gay scene, and alternative communities. Alongside Flute, with its Mary Poppins views of the city’s rooftops and other more touristy attractions such as the London Eye, those guests will have access to basement-dwelling Dear Jackie and street-level Bar Jackie. The former is an Italian restaurant named for Hayden’s mother while also paying tribute to other powerhouse women with the moniker (in Britain, as in the U.S., that typically infers Ms. Kennedy Onassis and Ms. Collins, alongside Ms. Stallone — Sylvester’s mother came to prominence in the U.K. after appearing in a popular series of Celebrity Big Brother ). The latter venue is an all-day bar and café that serves unpretentious sharing dishes for lunch and cocktails, which at £12 a pop are refreshingly accessibly priced for a high-end hotel in central London.

Where Broadwick Soho does fall short is its lack of other facilities. There’s no spa, pool, or gym, although the team can arrange access to nearby venues. And while the newly opened property is yet to finalize what it will offer guests in terms of privileged local experiences and activities, head concierge Alba assured me there are plans to create imaginative connections between Broadwick Soho guests and the neighborhood’s many exciting businesses and creatives: “Soho is our playground, we’re proud to be part of this community.”

The hotel’s unconventional design seems to be stage one of a broader plan to ensure its long-standing impact in a district where quirks have always been appreciated. Here’s more about what you can expect at Broadwick Soho .

Broadwick Soho

  • Minimalists aside, most guests will delight in the hotel’s aesthetic — it feels like there’s some cute little detail to discover in every corner.
  • This is the first hotel I’ve visited stocked with Sicilian brand Ortigia’s pretty toiletries, packed in recyclable aluminum tubes and intended for guests to take away.
  • Alongside being homely and buzzy, Dear Jackie serves consistently delicious dishes.
  • Flute’s cocktails are pitch-perfect, and the engagingly eclectic setting makes the bar very date-friendly.
  • The Soho setting means you’re a short amble from many of London’s best theaters, bars, and restaurants.

travel bar.ca reviews

A touch more aesthetically restrained than the hotel’s boisterous public areas, the 57 bedrooms feature unique artworks, jazzy prints, and, occasionally, gorgeous brass drinks cabinets that Jaipur artisans have handcrafted to resemble cutesy elephants. Sometimes with standalone tubs, tiled bathrooms are pristine and deliver fantastically invigorating water pressure — though some indeterminate, ambient noise emanating somewhere from mine, in room number 402, was occasionally irritating. Other little touches, like free on-demand movies, a jumbo bowl of gummy bears (irresistible) as a welcome amenity, and minibars stocked with interesting goodies, combine to encourage cozy nights in.

Given the hotel’s broader lack of facilities, the Broadwick Soho team goes all out to ensure the F&B offering wows guests. It looks gorgeous with its intimate snugs, walls decorated with handmade crockery, and colorful ceramic table tops custom-made in Positano. Our unfussy but punchy puttanesca pasta was superb (and good value at £14); big as a fist and full of flavor, a serving of monkfish came with a kick of ‘nduja. Bar Jackie feels a bit more perfunctory, with its menu of quick and easy sharing dishes (arancini with walnuts and puffy pinsa romana pizzas, for example), and tables are squeezed together tightly, so expect every word of your conversation to be heard by others if it’s busy. During breakfast, I could barely focus on my pillowy buttermilk pancakes as I endured the tech bro beside me droning on ceaselessly about his latest triumphs and investments. A nicely edited snacks menu is on hand at Flute if you fancy something light (say tuna tostadas or spring rolls) to accompany your cocktail.

Guests have access to The Nook residents-only lounge, but beyond enjoying the bedrooms themselves and availing of preferential restaurant and bar reservations, that’s pretty much the only client benefit. It is a lovely, busy space, though, with a flickering fireplace on the go and an unpretentious light bites-style menu. Plus, anyone’s welcome to choose a tune to spin on its integrated record player — the selection on offer includes options from British music titans such as Sade and The Rolling Stones.

Despite the endearing family-friendly backstory, this is a hotel for adults.

A number of accessible rooms have been adapted for guests with limited mobility and also feature visual, sound, and vibrating alarm systems. Sustainability-wise, the hotel makes the same "we care" claims as every other new property. There’s a notable avoidance of single-use plastics. Still, I doubted a statement asserting the business pays “careful consideration” to where produce is sourced when I saw they import their bottled water from Italy.

You’re right in the middle of Soho, once the center of London’s night-time economy and a den of iniquity packed with sex shops and brothels. Things have quietened significantly in recent decades, but there’s no shortage of pubs nearby. Strict licensing laws mean they’re not open all hours, and Broadwick Soho is also very well insulated — I didn’t notice external clamor during my stay. You’re close to various tube lines for public transport, including Tottenham Court Road, which now offers super-speedy Elizabeth Line train connections to Heathrow.

As an independent property, Broadwick Soho isn’t part of some global loyalty scheme — but it feels like the proprietors want to provide good value. Its restaurant and bar prices are commendably accessible compared to other luxury hotels in London. Plus, Soho itself is more accommodating than nearby Mayfair and Knightsbridge. For some low-cost, high-brow culture, you’re an easy walk from the superb National Gallery — and like London’s other major museums and galleries, it’s free entry. Including breakfast, room rates at Broadwick Soho start from £595 a night.

Wise card Canada review 2024

This prepaid travel card eliminates foreign exchange charges on your purchases abroad, though the loading fees could irk some travellers

A woman taps her Wise card on a payment terminal to pay for her coffee

The Wise card is a welcome addition to the services that Wise—formerly TransferWise—offers, but as you’ll quickly learn in this review, the card has a few quirks that will annoy users. That’s not to say that the Wise card is not worth having in your wallet when you travel abroad. You just need to know how the card works in order to keep your transaction fees down.

Is the Wise card a credit card?

Often referred to as the Wise credit card, the Wise card is actually a prepaid card available to residents of Canada and dozens of other countries. To use the card, you must have funds loaded into your Wise account. What makes Wise appealing is that it allows you to hold multiple currencies. That means you could potentially purchase some foreign dollars when the exchange rate is in your favour and then spend it as needed when you’re abroad.

No additional fees apply when making purchases with a currency you currently hold in your Wise account. However, if you don’t hold the currency in which you’re making a purchase, Wise will automatically deduct the funds from the currency in your account with the lowest conversion fees. That said, when making a purchase abroad and given the option to be charged in the local currency or Canadian dollars, always choose the local currency for the best exchange rate.

The Wise card also allows you to withdraw money from ATMs while abroad. Think of it as a Wise debit card, since you can use it for purchases and ATM withdrawals. Oddly enough, you can’t use the card within Canada.

The first two ATM withdrawals are free, up to a cumulative value of CAD$350 per calendar month. Any additional withdrawals will cost you $1.50 each, and a 1.75% fee will be added to amounts over $350. Also, note that the ATM provider may charge its own fee when you withdraw cash. Wise withdrawal fees and third-party ATM fees count towards your withdrawal limits—so plan accordingly.

How long does it take to get a Wise card ?

You must have a Wise account if you want to apply for a Wise card. The registration process only takes a few minutes and is done completely online. Once your account is active, you need to add funds. Doing so is simple, as you have many options including Interac e-Transfer, direct debit from your bank, and wire transfer.

Each loading method has a fee. Interac e-Transfer typically has the lowest fee, and your money will arrive in about five minutes. How much you’ll pay in fees depends on the currency and how much you’re loading.

To order your Wise card, log into your account and click on Wise Card on the side bar. The physical card will arrive within 14 days, and you also get a digital card you can use immediately. While the digital option is convenient, it won’t help people who are travelling soon and may need ATM access.

Wise card pros and cons

The Wise card is a unique option that many people will naturally be attracted to. That said, you should consider the pros and cons before you open an account.

Wise card pros

  • Can hold multiple currencies: This is a convenient option for travellers as they’ll know exactly what they’re paying to exchange money.
  • Flexible payments: Even if you don’t currently hold a specific currency in your account, you can still use your card for purchases and ATM withdrawals, as Wise will simply deduct the amount from the currency with the lowest transaction fees in your account.
  • No annual fee: There’s no cost to get the card.
  • Digital card available: You get a Wise digital card immediately when you request a physical card.

Wise card cons

  • Load fees: It’ll cost you money to load the card.
  • Not a true no-foreign-transaction-fee card: Although Wise has competitive exchange rates, it still charges a markup to load your card and when converting currencies.
  • Withdrawal limits: You get only two ATM withdrawals with a cumulative total of CAD$350 per calendar month without any fees.
  • No rewards earned: You don’t get any cash back or points when making purchases.

Alternatives to the Wise card

The Wise card, introduced in Canada at the end of 2021, is clearly designed to compete against cards with no foreign transaction fees. Even though Wise offers a good card, there are arguably better Canadian options. Both Wealthsimple and EQ Bank offer prepaid cards you can order if you’re an account holder.

The Wealthsimple and EQ Bank cards both have no annual fee, but what sets them apart from the Wise card is that they both use the exchange rate set by Visa, which is a bit lower than what Wise charges. Plus, Wealthsimple and EQ Bank don’t charge a fee to load funds into your account, so you’re coming out ahead right from the start. They also have no-fee ATM withdrawals.

Beyond prepaid cards, Wise is also competing with no foreign transaction fee credit cards , where competition is fierce. Even though the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite has an annual fee of $150, it’s often waived for the first year. In addition, you get great benefits such as six annual airport lounge passes and comprehensive travel insurance. Plus, this is a traditional credit card, so you don’t need to worry about preloading funds before departure.

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite

  • Annual fee: $150
  • Earn rate : 3 Scene+ points per $1 spent at Sobeys stores; 2 points per $1 on groceries, dining, entertainment and transit; 1 point per $1 on everything else. Plus, pay no FX fees
  • Welcome offer: earn up to $1,300 in value in the first 12 months, including up to 40,000 bonus Scene+ points and first year annual fee waived. Offer ends July 1, 2024.
  • Annual income requirement: Personal income of $60,000 or household income of $100,000
  • Point value: 1 Scene+ point = $0.01 when redeemed for travel, store purchases and food and drink at Cineplex and Scene partners
  • Recommended credit score   for approval : 700 or higher
  • Interest rates: 20.99% on purchases, 22.99% on cash advances, 22.99% on balance transfers

Is the Wise card any good?

Although the Wise card has some quirks that will annoy people who are looking to minimize their foreign transaction fees, the card does have enough positives to justify being in your wallet. You can easily add funds, and the ability to easily hold multiple currencies is incredibly convenient. That said, there are credit cards without foreign transaction fees that come with generous benefits and rewards that may be more appealing to some.

Is this place open? It's Saturday at 11:00 pm and the front door is locked. I'm bummed.

Can I bring my small dog?

I've never seen anyone with a dog but i think i saw one woman bring a small dog inside a carrier.

Went to Schwartz and Sandy's during the VPR viewing party, so it was super busy with tons of people having a blast. And both Toms were there and were super nice and chatty. I thought just being bar owners they would be douchey, let alone being on a tv show with everyone desperate for their attention but they were the complete opposite. I had The Starter drink and it was delicious. Ordered the lobster corn dogs and Ahi TarTare (tacos) and they were also delicious. Once we were able to get a seat, Hector became our server and he was awesome, nice and attentive. Obviously from the pictures this place has a beautiful interior. The outside is what people say it is but there are other boutique stores with most being catered to pets so I thought that was cute. I thought I was just going to come here for a one and done experience but I am for sure coming back and trying other foods on the menu.

**Ambiance:** Schwartz and Sandy's offers a unique blend of cozy interior vibes and divey exterior charm, providing a distinctive setting for a meal. Not a huge fan of the location, it was off the Hollywood strip and about 15 minutes away from West Hollywood where all the main bars and attractions are. **Service:** The standout feature was the outstanding and friendly service from the staff, making the dining experience memorable. **Food:** Despite a slight setback with our food arriving cold, the lobster corn dogs stood out as a delightful and enjoyable dish. Overall, Schwartz and Sandy's provides a cozy atmosphere coupled with excellent service. While there were some temperature issues with the food, the standout dish of lobster corn dogs unique drinks made the visit worthwhile.

I had heard how bad this place was and genuinely thought everyone was overreacting... they were not. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, was good. The drinks were pure sugar and disgusting. The food was cold and over seasoned. The ambiance was confusing. The lights were harsh yet dim? I have no idea how they managed to do this. The music was... like kings of Leon? It was so bizarre. We stayed for 30 minutes, got our check, and left. Shocked it's still open.

Came here from the show VPR and absolutely loved it. The inside was absolutely beautiful....stunning honestly. A lot of detail and super clean. The detail on the ceiling in the bathroom area was extremely creative ( TV w animations ) We sat ourselves due to no hostess and went to the bar, got our drinks really fast. The drinks were strong and very tasty, we got a few shots that were pretty big. The only complaint I could say is it smelt a little like cigarettes. Nice cozy place for drinks and would come back and recommend to non-VPR watchers.

Inside of the beautiful and elegant bar. I've never seen designs like Schwartz and Sandy's bar. Truly one of better bars I've been too.

Entrance

I made reservations with low expectations, and if I'm honest, they were not surpassed! My friend and I touched down in LA on a crisp Wednesday night in early November, securing a reservation around 9 pm. Upon entering, we discovered a nearly deserted restaurant! The menu was slim and the drink selection had items marked with tape, signaling their unavailability which was kind of funny. Surprisingly, they were also out of Tito's! I opted for their version of an espresso martini, which, at $18, proved somewhat underwhelming. For our adventure with the food menu, we decided on the mushroom gruyere beignets, lobster corndog, and butternut squash cacio e pepe. Regrettably, these dishes failed to whet our appetites! On a positive note, the server and hostess were outstanding, exuding warmth and friendliness. The decor, although charming and perfectly aligned with my taste, garnered mixed reviews from my gal pal, who found it a tad too all over the place. If I found myself in the area, I'd go back for a drink or two but skip the food!

Had a reservation at 8:30 but when we arrived the table was still full so waited a bit until we could be seated. The hostess was super sweet and kept us informed! The table itself was kind of odd as it was only 2 of us but the table was meant for a larger party of 4-5+ and right under a speaker so was very difficult to hear anything or to have a conversation. The decor and ambience are cool! The food is not something I'd recommend. We ordered the little gem salad, the herb fries, and the Schwartz Strawberry Shortcake. The fries were good! The little gem salad was very odd. The dressing was non-existent and was thin like a liquid. The salad was missing things it said it had but then had things it didn't mention which was odd given allergy concerns? The strawberry shortcake should probably not be advertised as a shortcake as it tasted like a combination of a box cake and English muffin and had a very bad proportion of cake to "strawberry". The drinks were good just pricey! At the end of our evening we saw a worker getting yelled at by a manager for taking a break which was kind of upsetting. All for keeping employees in check but I think it might be better to do it in private and not where customers can see. All in all, I think the place is confused about what it is? Or maybe even what it wants to be? It's neither a bar nor a restaurant, but a liminal space existing between the two in a strip mall.

Recommend reservations on Resy. They have a really small parking lot so I recommend battling it out for neighborhood parking. The restaurant was a lot smaller than expected so definitely expect an intimate vibe-- I would say 25 tables at most. Otherwise, it's definitely trendy with a dive bar feel. Nothing glamorous like LVP restaurants or Tom Tom. The menu is limited but we were actually really surprised at how good the food was. What we found interesting is that a majority of the dishes came with sauces and it really made the dishes unique. The shoestring fries($8) sounded so basic but the cherry sauce was delicious. We loved the juicy Lucy sliders ($16) cooked well and filling. The chicken waffle bites ($15) with the honey drizzled was my favorite. The mushroom Gruyère beignets($16) were different wasn't too crazy about them with the lemon cream. The drinks were a bit underwhelming for myself which was the only ding of the night. I love the drinks at Tom Tom and thought it would be similar vibe but was pretty basic. Nothing to write home about. The drinks were $15 and up. Service was solid. Our waitress was basically handling one side of the restaurant by herself as she had a call out and they were short staffed. Appreciate she was honest and we definitely gave her grace about it. Otherwise, this is a fun place to get a bite to eat with friends or a date night if you are a pump rules fan. I was unable to leave a review in July due to Yelp banning reviews because of the scandoval situation so I deleted my food photos but my tik tok has it all. Overall, I enjoyed myself!

We made a reservation in advance just in case it would be busy for a Friday night. We pulled into the small lot and were lucky to find a spot to park. It's in a small strip shopping center so unexpected. The front does have a cute sign. We were able to get seated right away even though we were a little early. Our server also was super friendly. I ordered the butternut squash pasta and my fiancé got the salmon tikka masala. Both dishes were very tasty. We both ate all of it. The pasta was light. The salmon was cooked well and good flavors. The only weird thing was the pasta was about the same price as the salmon which I find strange. Interior decor was fun. Drink menu had 2-3 drinks taped over so not as many available as maybe they typically would.

Food was subpar. The service people were friendly . Unfortunately the ambience did not make sense and the food along with presentation was disappointing. Would not waste my time with this restaurant.

Construction begins on high-speed rail between Vegas and California

Brightline west will make the trip between las vegas and rancho cucamonga in a little over two hours.

Privately owned train company Brightline held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for a $12 billion high-speed rail project connecting Las Vegas and Southern California.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg joined company leaders and other officials for the start of construction in Las Vegas.

Brightline West benefits from $3 billion in federal funds from President Biden ’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Trains could be running as soon as early 2028, in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Travelers have a lot to look forward to. Electric trains will depart every 45 minutes from a Las Vegas station south of the city’s storied Strip and a Southern California station in Rancho Cucamonga, a Los Angeles suburb about 40 miles east of downtown.

Traveling at up to 186 mph — faster than any other train in the United States — Brightline West trains will make the 218-mile trip in about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

“At long last, we’re building the first high-speed rail project in our nation’s history,” President Biden said of Brightline West in December. “We’ve been talking about this project for decades. Now we’re really getting it done.”

Other high-speed railroads that would carry passengers at 200 mph and faster are in the works in California, Texas and the Pacific Northwest.

“The bottom line here is we changed the trajectory,” Buttigieg said in an interview Monday. More than $30 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been awarded to date and more is on the way, he added.

The success of the Brightline West project could influence how future rail projects receive funding.

“It won’t be easy but I think they have all of the right things in place to get this done,” Buttigieg said.

Speed is Brightline West’s main selling point. Driving between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas takes at least three hours without traffic, according to Google Maps.

“You’ll be sitting there flying by on Brightline looking at all these brake lights on the highway and thinking, ‘It sucks to be you,’” said Jim Mathews, CEO of the Rail Passengers Association , said on Friday. “That’s what it’s going to be like for all those people trying to get from greater Los Angeles to Las Vegas.”

Brightline West trains will run along Interstate 15 for nearly their entire journey. They will make two intermediate stops in California: one in Hesperia and one in Apple Valley.

Travelers coming from Los Angeles will have the option of riding Metrolink , Southern California’s regional rail system, to the Rancho Cucamonga station located near the junction of Interstates 10 and 15. The trip between downtown Los Angeles and Rancho Cucamonga takes at least 50 minutes by car without traffic, or 1 hour and 15 minutes on the train.

“Getting it to a juncture where pretty much everybody who passes into the I-15 corridor goes through is a massive benefit from a climate perspective, a congestion perspective, and an economic perspective,” Buttigieg said.

Future plans include a direct connection for Brightline West to Los Angeles Union Station as part of the separate California High-Speed Rail project.

Speed won’t be the only reason to ride Brightline West.

Brightline’s Florida operation connecting Miami to Orlando opened in September , giving future customers out West an idea of what to expect. Before Brightline’s debut, Amtrak held a monopoly on intercity passenger rail travel for decades.

Stations are spacious with comfortable areas to sit, bars selling craft cocktails and a lounge for premium passengers. Onboard, travelers enjoy assigned seats and fast WiFi. Attendants come down the aisle serving snacks and drinks throughout the trip.

Brightline told investors that it carried a record 258,307 passengers in March, and that one in three of its trains were nearly full.

Brightline’s strong ridership, though slower than initially promised to investors, makes a strong case for building fast and frequent trains between major U.S. cities such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Brightline West estimates that 6 million people will ride its trains during the first full year of operation, according to a federal environmental assessment . That number is projected to grow to as many as 9.2 million people within a decade.

The company estimates that, without the train, three-quarters of its riders would drive between Southern California and Las Vegas. Another 15 percent would fly, and the balance would not make the trip at all.
