We’ve always been huge fans of scrapbooking and journal keeping. Call us old fashioned, but there’s just something nostalgic and beautiful about preserving our memories with care. We’re also huge lovers of organization, so cataloging our experiences and adventures is a really satisfying process. It’ll probably come as no surprise to you, then, that we’ve been keeping travel scrapbooks for years! Each time we go on a trip with friends or family, we collect all kinds of trinkets, pictures, postcards, and ticket stubs and arrange them in ways that can be kept and looked back on whenever we feel like it.

Just in case you’ve been thinking about starting to keep travel scrapbooks too, check out these awesome online tutorials that have given us ideas and inspiration for making travel scrapbooks of our own!

1. Mini travel album

Have you made several scrapbooks of all different kinds before but you got kind of overwhelmed when it came to storing them because many of the basic books that you can buy to customize are very large and you’re not sure where to store scrapbooks that are so big? Then perhaps you’d actually prefer to make a miniature version like this adorable little book from  Our Mini Family ! They show you how to create a small travel scrapbook that still documents your most recent adventure beautifully but in a way that’s a little more space efficient.

5. Three-ring photo journal

Are you a photographer, or at least a picture taking enthusiast, who always comes home from vacation with countless photos that you love and you have trouble choosing which ones to include in your scrapbook? Then why not create a travel scrapbook design that’s a lot more image heavy than what we’ve shown you so far? Sure, you could just put your photos in a standard store bought photo album, but  Athletes Abroad suggests arranging pictures into collages and printing nicely designed pages that you can hold punch and hold together with free floating rings for easy flipping. This design lets you also link things like ticket stubs and post cards into the book without losing them.

6. Handwritten Polaroid journal

Rather than printing things or sticking on embellishments, would you rather keep things simple and personal, with a little less flare than necessary? In that case, perhaps you’d rather create something like this hand written scrapbook from  Volume 25 ! We love the way they’ve given things a vintage theme by writing their memories on upcycled brown cardstock and printing some of their photos on Polaroids.

7. Folded map memento envelopes

Within the world of scrapbooking, there’s always been one technique that we’ve found totally cool, really cute looking, and a lot of fun to use. We love including a small envelope, glued to the page face down, to be filled with trinkets and keepsakes from the trip that perhaps don’t lay flat on a page or fit in a photo sleeve! What’s even more fun than that, however, is this folded map idea from  Martha Stewart . This tutorial shows you how to cut and fold a section of a map into an envelope shape that you can fill with whatever you choose. Talk about tying your scrapbook elements in with the travel theme!

8. Pocket pages photo album

If your favourite type of memory book actually structured more like a photo album and less like a scrapbook but you’d still like to add some slightly more DIY element rather than just buying an album filled with plastic pocket pages? Then check out how Made By Cay personalized their album to make it a little craftier looking! They’ve alternated pockets filled with photos and labeled Polaroids with pockets in which printed photos, handmade trinkets, and drawings have been slid to break up the snapshots and trip previews and add some extra visual appeal to the book.

9. Cut outs and quotes pages

Do you have one favourite photo from your most recent trip that really stands out above all the rest for you and you’d love to make sure it has a shining central place in the travel scrapbook you’ll make of the trip? Then why not print that photo out nice and big and dedicate an entire page to it? We love the way  Kerrie Gurney overlaid their photo on some patterned fabric and framed it with cut fabric strips, lace trim, and stick on letters to level where the snapshot was taken.

10. Arrow embellishments for travel pages

Are you pretty sure you already have a good idea of which trinkets and photos you’d like to include in your travel scrapbook but you’d like to built a sort of theme throughout the book that’s consistent from page to page, since you went to so many places that one detail from a specific country or culture would be a little too specific? Then maybe you’d rather choose something cute but generalized, kind of how  Hobby Craft used arrows point in all different directions to contextualize their book! We love that the scattered, angled arrows serve as a reminder of how many places there really are for you to travel.

11. Post card and printed picture book

have you been collecting little trinkets and keepsakes from all of your travels for years now, but you think perhaps you’d better be more conscious of how much stuff you bring home moving forward because you’ve built up quite a collection and now you have to find a place to put it all? Then maybe it’s time to start collecting something that’s a little more space efficient! We love the way  World of Wanderlust started not just collecting beautifully photographed post cards from each city they’ve visited around the world, but also how they built a beautiful little book out of their collection by fastening the postcards onto the pages and decorating around them with travel themed stamps and stickers.

12. Saved tickets slide pocket

Do you have a postcard or two from your last trip but the thing you actually collected the most of was event, concert, or admission tickets? In that case, here’s a  very cool technique for combining the two in a way that will let you display them all, keep them all in place, and make them simple to look through when you’re feeling nostalgic.  Paper Chase shows you how to affix the postcard from some sides but leave other sides loose so that you can slide the tickets underneath and have the postcard hold them in place like a pocket.

13. Postage ink stamps book cover

Have you actually filled and completed your travel scrapbook so that the inside of the book is stunning and satisfying to flip through but now you need a beautiful way to decorate the front cover that looks just as nice? We’d suggest taking a look at the way  Troom Troom covered their front cover in international postage stamps, like the book itself might have travel around the world and back in the mail!

14. Map accordion road trip books

Are you still intent on making yourself a book but you just wish you could make it look at least a little more unique than a regular album with normal flip pages, since you’ve always been a fan of novelty? One of my favorite aspects of traveling is that it doesn't end when you come home. Scrapbooking is the perfect way to bring your travel memories to life, and an excellent way to embrace traveling from home!

I've been scrapbooking for many years now, putting together journals, diaries, binders, maps, and photo collages of my vacation memories since I was young. While I'm definitely not an artist (my drawings are absolutely terrible) , I find that scrapbooking allows me to be creative but also have a bit of fun!

I'm a firm believer that travel doesn't end when you come home. In fact, it's only the beginning. And by scrapbooking your travel memories, you can continue to bring the lessons and experiences you had in your vacations and exploring into your daily life. Scrapbooking is such a fun way to bring your travels to life, and there's no right or wrong way to do it! You are free to customize and create whatever floats your boat. I tend to go a little overboard on the stickers, myself, but to each their own.

In this post, I'm outlining five different ways you can scrapbook your travel memories, all of which are methods I use. If you're concerned that making an entire scrapbook seems a bit overwhelming, don't worry! I've listed other ideas too. You'll see real examples of scrapbook pages, materials, and tools that I use to bring my travels to life, as well as products I recommend, like acid-free tape squares (so your photos don't turn yellow over time).

If you are planning to make one of the scrapbook ideas listed here, these are my recommendations for scrapbooking supplies, where to find them, and how much to budget.

Scrapbooking Supplies

I get most of my scrapbooking supplies at Michael's or Target , but as of late, Amazon has been helpful. In my experience, Michael's definitely has the most options for scrapbooks, paper, craft supplies, and stickers. As a teacher, I get 15% off my purchases at Michael's by showing my ID. Plus, they always have huge sales and tons of coupons, making Michael's a great place for scrapbooking supplies! Scrapbooking doesn't have to be an expensive hobby, but it can definitely become that way rather quickly. There are so many choices out there that it's easy to get carried away! If you are working on your first scrapbooking project, I recommend starting small. Only buy what you need, and then later, if you decide to make more, you can add to your supplies. Budget about $75 for your first scrapbook, which should cover the scrapbook, paper, photos, and decorative materials, such as stickers and pens.

Paper in different sizes & colors You'll want plenty of paper to create your own pages, paper to cut it out and use for photograph backgrounds, paper for written excerpts and journal entries, or even to test out certain color combinations. I recommend having 8x10 printer paper, as well as 10x10 or 12x12 scrapbook paper if you are making a large binder.

Having multiple colors and patterns give you more creative options and choices. Based on the theme of my scrapbook, I choose 75% solid colors, and then 25% with patterns. For my Ireland scrapbook, I chose the plain colors green, orange, and gold for my pages, and then added a few extra patterns with green and white stripes, shamrocks, and gold lines. Michael's has an entire aisle devoted to paper. Go crazy, my friends , but be sure to recycle what you don't use!

Markers/Special Pens/Pencils The more, the better! You'll want plenty of colors and different types. Try calligraphy pens, sharpies, markers, colored pencils, and of course, a good eraser and white-out, in case you make a mistake. I use these Faber-Castell pens and Tombow dual-brush markers on a regular basis for bullet journaling and scrapbooking, and absolutely love Prismacolor colored pencils .

Acid-Free Tape Squares Don't use regular tape for scrapbooking purposes - make sure it's acid-free to reduce brown edges and so you don't ruin your pictures. I use these acid-free tape squares that are perfect for adhering photographs to pages. They come in a dispenser that you can keep, and you only need to buy replacement squares.

Stickers (you can never have too many) Give me alllll the stickers! Even my Spanish students know about my sticker obsession - and I use any excuse to give them out! Stickers for scrapbooking are filled with possibilities, and you can easily spend your entire scrapbooking budget on them. So, stick to a few favorites - letters in a color you like, stickers that reflect where you went on vacation, or perhaps some fun flowers or outdoor items. My favorite sticker brands are Jolee's Boutique and Recollections, which you can find online from Michael's , Amazon , or Target .

Pictures For most scrapbooks, you'll want to have photographs to commemorate your travels! But before you print them out, make sure you've decided which of the following options you're going to be focusing on. At best, make sure your photos are in one place, such as Google Photos, or perhaps an SD card or album. That way, you can easily print out or upload the ones you need, and they are somewhat organized.

Five Ways to Scrapbook Your Travel Memories

Create a traditional travel scrapbook.

The first and most common way to scrapbook your travel memories is to create a proper scrapbook in binder form.

I typically use a 12x12 binder like this one with plastic page inserts where you can add pages that you design, giving you more creativity and freedom than a notebook.

The first thing to decide is organization and layout. For our honeymoon scrapbook, I chose to commemorate each destination along our 3-week road trip , rather than every individual day. You can see an example of this in the photo above for San Francisco. We spent 3 days in San Fran but I only devoted 2 pages to it, to save room for other destinations. You can choose to organize your scrapbook by day, by destination, by week, or however else you like! I refer to my travel journal to help with this part. Next, I gather the photos I want to use in the scrapbook, and print them out usually at CVS or Walmart, depending on who has the best deals at the moment. With photos in hand, I'm ready to begin!

I gather my photos, plus all any ticket stubs, paper, postcards, mementos, or other travel-related souvenirs related to the trip, and begin to organize everything into piles/pages. I'll usually do this on the floor of my living room or bedroom. Then, for each destination, I go back to my travel journal, social media posts, and personal memories to write a short "blurb" about what we did, where we went, any funny stories or travel fails, or memorable moments. I choose anywhere from 2-5 photos to include on the pages and then decide on the arrangement. Don't start taping anything down until you are positive it all fits and looks good! Lastly, I add themed stickers for decoration.

You can add as much or as little as you want to your scrapbook pages - it's completely up to you. If you'd rather not write a lot of text, no problem! Use the space for more photos. If you want to include all of your ticket stubs from the concerts you attended on your trip, add them! Have fun playing around with different arrangements, styles, and layouts. There's no right or wrong way to do it.

*Pro Tip: If you have too many pages but not enough room in the scrapbook, you can buy these extensions to give you more space, or just make a second one. I have 2 scrapbooks for my semester abroad - there were too many memories to fit into one book!

Scrapbook With A Travel Coloring Book or Another Collective Item.

After making multiple scrapbooks to commemorate our travel adventures, I was inspired to try something new when coloring books started making a comeback. To this day, I am still obsessed with Johanna Basford's gorgeous coloring books , but it was thanks to a friend I discovered the National Parks had coloring books , too!

After exploring seven National Parks on our honeymoon , I knew we were just getting started. Now, with more than 60 US National Parks to explore, I have the perfect way to honor our time in each one we visit - with a National Parks coloring book - and a corresponding stamp collector's book , too!

For each park that we visit ( As of this post, 13 total! ), I color the corresponding page with my favorite Prismacolor pencils and add it to a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors. I love this option because it requires less work, but also allows for creativity and remembering places as special as the national parks. I also collect stamps from each of the parks we visit and put into the Stamp Collector Passport Book . Is this really for children? Most likely. Do I care? Not at all.

Coloring books are an excellent option to commemorate your travel memories, especially if you want something less complex than making a scrapbook yourself.

Design a Photo Collage Travel Scrapbook.

From Shutterfly to Snapfish , even your local pharmacy or Walmart - photo books are a great way to recall your vacation memories. You have lots of design and size options and can choose a pre-existing layout, or make your own. A photo book is an excellent option for anyone who feels that making a scrapbook themselves is just too much to do - and that's totally okay!

I've been using Shutterfly since 2012, and continue to use it for photo-related gifts. Every year, I make my parents a calendar with photos from the previous year. Shutterfly always has coupons and discounts plus their site is user-friendly. This is not sponsored, just a heartfelt recommendation. I even used Shutterfly to make our wedding photo album, as seen above!

Photo albums are always a good idea - and can make a great gift or travel memento.

Make a Bullet Journal or Update Your Existing Travel Journal.

Did you keep a travel journal on your last vacation? Use it for scrapbooking!

I bring a travel journal on all of our vacations - and even needed a second one for our 6 month trip around the world last year! Dylan attempted to keep a travel journal too - but that lasted a few days before he opted to take notes on his phone instead. For shorter trips, I bring my bullet journal - my everyday place for keeping lists, notes, thoughts, and ideas. I dedicate certain pages to writing about our travels with fun markers and pens, which can sometimes even include photos, ticket stubs, or funny quotes! If you already have an existing travel journal, go back and add to it ! You can decorate with markers and pens , add photos, ticket stubs, or anything else you want to remember. With the memories already written down, you've done most of the work! All you have to do is go in and have fun making it look as pretty or creative as you like.

Dylan and I haven't hung up any decorative items in our current apartment, but I can't wait until we have a house to hang up all of our maps!

It all started with an actual map Dylan bought in 2012. It was a map of New Hampshire and Vermont, to commemorate our new hiking adventures. We flattened out the map and attached it to a bulletin board, hanging it right in our foyer. For each hike, we placed a pushpin on the map, and watched our adventures grow.

Shortly after our honeymoon adventure , I wanted to add more maps to commemorate our travels and hikes. I bought a National Parks map with a sticker to commemorate visiting each park. Later, I also added a US State High Points map as well. Our front entryway became dedicated to a collection of our hiking adventures and travels. My best friend Kristen bought me a scratch map of the world for my birthday last year, which I can't wait to hang in our home one day soon along with the others.

Final Thoughts on Scrapbooking Your Travels

I am a little behind in scrapbooking our travels/vacations. Do you think it is better to start with the most recent and work my way back? We love visiting the National Parks and have a lot more to visit. We are 70 and 71 so we need to get busy.

Get those panoramic shots!

Be sure to avoid cutting into people's faces - use mosaic friendly photos. If there are people or buildings like in this example that you do not want to cut up, do like Paije did -- and keep a larger uncut space in your mosaic.

6. Take Those Detailed Shots

Take photos of everything around you.

These photos help tell the story and give a sense of what your experience was like. Tami took photos of the shops they visited, buildings, gardens, and fountains as well as her close-up focal photo. It'd be a great page with just her focal photo but all the other detail shots make her layout rich with extra detail and information about her trip.

7. use the pattern gallery to fit in all of your photos.

8. Match your Patterned Paper to Your Theme

Use a patterned paper that matches with the theme and overall feel of the location.

Patterned paper can enhance your layout. Tami chose a weathered wood paper which brings out the "aged" feel on her page. This helps tell the story of her visit to the historic site, Fort Sumter.

9. take vertical and horizontal photos.

Take a mix of vertical and horizontal photos during your travels to help you completely fill up your specialty die layouts.

You'll have more flexibility for those Adventure and Discover dies. If you have lots of photos, especially horizontal and vertical shots, it'll be a snap to plan your page. Here, Paije was tempted by the scenery to only take horizontal landscape shots. Good thing she remembered how important it was to take vertical shots too!

10. Add Small Details for Your Eyes to Rest

Use cardstock or patterned paper as places for your eye to rest on the layout.

Even though we want to fit in lots of travel photos - it may seem too busy. Here, the orange paper helps your eye rest between the details of all the photos and it helps rotate your eye around the page.

These little details make a huge impact on your photo designs!

11. adjust your photos to fit the small spaces .

There are a lot of small spaces in the specialty dies and it might be a challenge to use photos at a full 4x6 size.

There are things you can do to make them fit.  You can take your photos from greater distances and then cropping them is a breeze.  Another idea is to print your photos smaller. You can adjust the printing size on your printer or with applications like Photoshop.

We use the Epson PM-400 to print our photos to smaller sizes.

12. Vary the Distances of Your Photos

Take photos from a variety of distances.

If these photos were taken close up, the subjects would not fit. Get up close then take three steps back (or more) and take more pictures.

After months of sitting at home – plans scrapped, planes grounded, journeys not taken – saying we have “wanderlust” is an understatement. If you’re like us, you’ve watched all the travel shows and documentaries . Leafed through every travel book you could get your hands on. Whipped up exotic meals from places you dream of visiting. Spent hours online, researching the next far-flung destination you’ll jet off to as soon as you can. The further the better.

But have you considered looking backwards ? Mining your own memories of holidays past? It’s worth a shot. Finally organising your favourite travel photos into beautiful, handmade scrapbooks will not only fill the hours at home, it will fill the travel void in your life as you relive your most unforgettable adventures.

To get started, we asked seven veteran scrapbookers to share their most useful tips for preserving travel memories in creative, eye-catching scrapbooks and journals. They deliver the goods, from the essential supplies to the best photo printing methods, and their secrets for staying organised on the go – as soon as you’re ready to hit the road once again.

My Origin Story… In 2015, when I was back home from a year of traveling in Australia and Southeast Asia, I saw a Youtube video of someone who had put tons of travel memorabilia of her Australia trip into a little book, and it looked so amazing. I wanted to do something similar!

My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… My scrapbooking style is very colourful, as I always use lots of vibrant pattern paper. With every new project, I challenge myself to try something new, like a new format or style, a new kind of embellishment or technique. I use a lot more washi tape and stamps now than 5 years ago, and I use less ribbons, buttons or coloured stones (it makes the books way too thick).

I strongly believe that even the most basic and random supplies can be turned into an awesome travel scrapbook. Scrapbooking offers endless possibilities, and in the end it’s just paper – if you don’t like the outcome, you can try it again!

My Must-Have Supplies… The basics should be clear to everyone: a good pair of scissors, adhesives and some pens to write down your story! Everything else is really optional, as long as you have a book and your pictures. I use a guillotine paper cutter, and I need a ruler to measure. I consider pattern paper and washi tape as must-haves for myself.

My Photo Philosophy… I get my pictures printed in either 9x13cm or in 10x15cm at a local drugstore, as it is pretty cheap and fast. Having standard sizes that I use for most projects makes it easier for me to plan and execute a project, which is probably part of why I can accomplish many travel scrapbook projects in a short timeframe. To be on the safe side, I get a few more pictures printed than I need, and whatever is left over when the project is finished goes into my Project Life scrapbook, so the pictures don’t go to waste.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories… Collect as much memorabilia from your trip as possible! Think: receipts, tickets and brochures, but also foreign currency and biscuit packaging. You don’t need special travel-themed embellishments or supplies to make your scrapbook awesome; any basic supplies and neutral-coloured embellishments will work in a travel scrapbook, as the pictures, your memorabilia and your story are the focal points. You can put as much or as little time and money into a travel scrapbook as you want. In the end you will love having your memories on the shelf for decades to come – and you’ll have made it yourself!

My Origin Story… My first experience with scrapbooking was when I came home from my semester abroad in college. I sat on the floor with my photos, magazines, scissors and a glue stick, and made what I would call my first scrapbook. Years later, my mom and I went to a home class with Creative Memories, and from the moment I saw the products, I was hooked. I knew this was the way I wanted to share my photos and my stories, and it was a lot of fun getting together with friends and scrapping the night away. Over 25 years later, I’m still scrapbooking (although now via Zoom) and it’s still one of my favourite hobbies.

My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… I love to call my approach “elegant simplicity”. My mission has been to teach people that your photos are the star of your pages, and your story is what brings those photos to life. Everything else is fun, really FUN – but secondary. That is what I have learned after 25 years of scrapbooking. In the early days I wanted to try everything and put it all over my pages. I now use a simple strategy to create pages that are easy to look at, and will be timeless for generations.

My Must-Have Supplies…  My go-to products are from Creative Memories. (1) A beautiful lay-flat flex-hinge album. (2) A 12-inch trimmer that slices paper like butter. (3) A personal trimmer to cut photos (I love my squares and rectangles!). (4) Adhesive that never fails (tape runner from CM). (5) My favourite tool: the CM border maker system (creates amazing borders without fail). (6) Stacks of amazing paper. (7) A black fine-tip pen (gotta add your journaling!). (8) Foam squares (#foamsquaresforthewin). (9) Stickers (especially alphabet stickers). I tried, and it’s really hard to scrapbook without stickers! (10) A little space of your own to “create”. If your stash is not accessible, even the best intentions will not lead to creating your projects.

My Photo Philosophy…  I absolutely LOVE to print my photos at home. I switched to on-demand printing with a Canon printer, and have never looked back. The flexibility, quality and time-savings have made this a hands-down winner in my book.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories…  Travel albums are my favourite, and a beautiful way to remember the adventures and time we spend together seeing the world. However, memories can be fleeting, so I encourage anyone who wants to create a keepsake album to take a few essential supplies with them on their travels: A small traveller’s notebook, a mini printer and a few basic supplies like washi tape, watercolours, stickers and pens that make documenting the trip fun. In the notebook, you can create a calendar with your daily destinations to refer back to, and keep a daily log with photos that will be a great resource for creating a keepsake album of all your photos and memories when you return home.

My Origin Story… In my early 30s I made an effort to spend more of my income on new experiences, and less of it on “stuff”. Travel became an integral part of how I chose to enrich my life, but I found I was spending thousands of dollars a year on these amazing trips and experiences, only to not remember the things I had done when I got back home. As a result, my journey into journaling and documenting my travels sort of came out of necessity. I wanted to remember the cities I visited, the hotels I stayed in, the meals I enjoyed, the tour groups I used, the excursions I went on, and all the fun conversations and memories made in between. Having a travel journal helped me do that.

My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… I’m a firm believer that it’s not about how it looks, but about what you put in it. I know a lot of people don’t want to get into scrapbooking or journaling because it seems like a lot of work. They think they will remember all the details, and they keep their photos on their phone and thus see no reason to document these moments. Yet when people see what I’ve created, they always say “I wish I had written that stuff down”. So my approach is less about getting hung up on how it looks or being the best artist – it’s about taking a few minutes to write down the things you’ll want to remember 6 months or 5 years from now. And I guarantee you that you won’t look back at those pages and think “Man, my penmanship was terrible!” You’ll be too preoccupied with re-living those incredible moments.

My Must-Have Supplies… I always use my Wanderlust Passport, which is a journal I designed ( and sell ) specifically for documenting travel and new experiences. I always carry a handful of pens, a couple rolls of washi tape, a portable photo printer, and a double-sided tape dispenser for taping receipts, ticket stubs and the like into my journal. I also love collecting vinyl stickers of the destinations I visit. I live in an Airstream full-time, which means I can’t be collecting hoodies, shot glasses or other souvenirs, because I just don’t have space. A sticker from a destination is a great way to remember the places I’ve been, and I use that on the outside of my Wanderlust Passport Travel Journal to help remind me at a glance which journal includes which destinations.

My Photo Philosophy… I always have my iPhone with me, which takes remarkable photos. And for long trips, I bring my DSLR. I love using my portable Instax printer to cherry-pick the best moments from a trip and put that into my journal. I find that I can take thousands of photos on a single trip, and I almost never go back into my camera roll and look at them. But when I do, I’ll find I have 100 photos of a tree. No idea why I took that many or what that tree was about, but I have them. Printing the most important moments allows me to really focus on the key moments of a trip and highlight the memories worth remembering.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories… I always like to start with some foundational information for each entry: date, location, weather conditions, coordinates and a key place (this can be the hotel where you stayed, a restaurant you ate at, a museum you visited). Have that foundational information there for reference, and then use the rest as a creative free-form. I use this method in my Wanderlust Passport, and it has been so useful in going back and sharing destinations and recommendations with friends travelling to the same places I’ve already been. Another thing I always do is keep a running note in my phone, and jot down what I did each day on my travels. When I’m ready, I can sit down and chronologically enter my activities into my physical journal and easily recall the details I want to record.

My Origin Story… I started scrapbooking when I was pregnant with my first son – he’s now 23! – and wandering through a local craft store. I stumbled into the scrapbooking aisle and was intrigued. I started then and have never looked back.

My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… I would describe my approach as pretty graphic with clean lines and a focus on the photos and storytelling. That has changed drastically from my early days, when I would use my scissors to cut around the people in my photos, glue them to a piece of card stock and then put stickers ALL OVER the page!

My Must-Have Supplies…  A black pen – that’s my mainstay; from journaling to outlining everything I do, that’s hands down my number one supply. My preferred foundation for scrapbooking is a Traveller’s Notebook, basically a refillable notebook consisting of a flexible, book-like cover that holds multiple notebooks/inserts with elastic bands. If I was limited to 2 supplies, it would be those 2 items. Additional supplies include washi tape, stamps, stickers and die cuts.

My Photo Philosophy… Although I have an expensive Nikon DSLR camera, my preferred mode of photography is almost exclusively using my iPhone. It’s amazing the quality photos that I can take with my iPhone 11 Pro. I print most of my photos at home using the Epson PictureMate PM-400. The portable size, quality of print and print size range makes it a versatile printer, especially for the price. I prefer to print at home for the flexibility and to be able to print on demand.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories…  There are 2 things I do when I’m on a trip that I plan to document. The first is to take a notebook with me and document as I go. Whether I’m going to use that notebook to ultimately capture and preserve the memories, or I’m just using it to keep notes to refer to when I’m ready to document the trip, it’s a sure fire way to make sure I don’t forget the details – the dates, times and places. Doing that also serves as an outline when I’m ready to sit down and pair the photos with the details and the stories. The second thing I do is to collect all the things! When I’m on a trip, I gather tickets, brochures, maps, local pamphlets and magazines, stickers, charms, pens, postcards and more. Incorporating memorabilia from my travels not only adds more to the stories I’m telling, but it also serves as triggers for remembering small details about my travels that I might otherwise forget. I filmed a video last year on my YouTube channel that talks about this gathering process and how I approach it:

One of my favourite things to do related to this is to buy a postcard while travelling, fill it out, take it to the local post office and mail it back home to myself. It’s a great memento to include in my scrapbooks, and it’s especially interesting when it has the foreign stamp and postmark.

My Origin Story… I began scrapbooking in 2004, two weeks after my dad died. I returned to Quebec from my hometown of Truro, Nova Scotia with a handful of family photos and a head full of memories. My Photo Philosophy… I use a Sony a6000 mirrorless digital camera and an old iPhone 6s. I prefer my Sony photos, but appreciate the convenience of my phone. As for printing, I have a Canon Selphy CP1300, but I prefer printing at my local camera shop. Selphy prints are quite glossy and I like a matte finish.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories… While travelling, include yourself in some of the photos. Collect brochures, receipts, tickets, etc, and keep a travel journal. The travel journal doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just take a few notes recording memories at the end of each day. When you create the scrapbook, journal about your memories. Write about what fascinated or frustrated you. Tell the story about a local you met who touched your heart, or how you dropped your phone in the Trevi Fountain. Travel brochures and Google searches record facts. Only you can tell your story.

My Origin Story… I’ve always been the crafty kid, so I was making little books and magazines growing up. It wasn’t until high school that I learned that scrapbooking was a thing. My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… My personal aesthetic is very clean with a handmade touch; I love to incorporate my handwriting or ephemera collected from the real world to tell my stories. I don’t really use a lot of other embellishments aside from clear stamps and stickers – my approach centres more on the moment than on the fun side of getting crafty. I buy a lot less craft products now than I used to: as much as I want to craft for fun, I realised that most of my scrapbook pages only had 2-3 products on them.

My Must-Have Supplies… My list of must-haves, especially for scrapbooking on the go, are: a mini journal to document in, my favourite pen and highlighter to add colour, a Fujifilm Instax printer, a stapler or roll of washi tape so I can stick tickets and other ephemera in quickly, and a mini zip pouch to put everything in!

My Photo Philosophy… I love using a Fujifilm Instax printer for a lot of my photos. Printing photos is usually the biggest obstacle to starting a scrapbook, and I find that being able to send photos from my phone to my printer gets me scrapbooking in no time.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories… I recommend having an extra mini journal to jot down things on the go – what you did that day, things you ate, anything that stood out. As much as scrapbooking on the go sounds fun, you’ll usually be too tired to craft while you’re on your trip. Having a place to list down highlights will help jog your memory when you get home and want to relive and document the moment in more detail. Have a dedicated ziplock bag or envelope to save all the bits and pieces along the way: tickets, maps, restaurant cards – they’ll be fun additions to your albums.

My Origin Story… When I was little and went on summer camping trips with my dad’s side of the family, down in Cornwall (UK), I would write in my notebook what I did everyday, and collect tickets and shells and booklets, and glue them into the notebook, to read and show my mum when I returned back home. From there it has grown into a love of documenting my travels.

My Scrapbooking Aesthetic… My personal scrapbook approach is to use photography, colours, ephemera and stickers to reflect the beautiful sights and adventures of my travels and how it made me feel at the time. For example I can use scrapbooking to show the contrast of a bustling city full of motorbikes in Hanoi Vietnam, to sitting on a boat peacefully drifting on Lake Taupo in New Zealand.

I’d describe my scrapbooking aesthetic as structured, colourful and reflective. My style has definitely evolved since writing and sticking tickets in a lined paper notebook! Since becoming a graphic designer, I think I consider colour a lot more and use layering to create texture. I also create graphic elements to include in my scrapbooks, such as personalised travel tags and boarding passes.

My Must-Have Supplies… In all my scrapbooks I use double sided tape, washi tape, patterned or coloured paper, stickers and die cuts, from a range of different shops in the UK. I also really enjoy using recycled materials such as old wrapping paper and magazines.

My Photo Philosophy…  I take digital photos on a mixture of my camera, phone and stills from GoPro footage. I get my photos printed digitally online and sent to me. As I work on a scrapbook project per holiday instead of documenting daily life and events, it’s easier and cheaper for me to get them all printed in one go! I like to vary the size of the photos, so that when they’re laid out on a page, they’re not all the same size. It’s a simple way to create visual interest.

My Tips For Scrapbooking Your Travel Memories… Get into the habit of writing every evening what you did that day, so it’s fresh in your mind and you remember all the little details. Keep a plastic wallet in your bag or suitcase to keep all the tickets, brochures, books, napkins, boarding passes, receipts that you have collected over your travels. Take photos of what you would like to remember, if that means taking photos of absolutely everything or just one photo to sum up the whole day, both are absolutely fine!
