Carnival cruise assessing damage to 2 ships after collision

Six people sustained minor injuries after the collision, the cruise line said.

Six people sustained minor injuries after two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided Friday at a port in Cozumel, Mexico , according to the company.

Those injured presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation following the incident, a statement from the cruise line read.

A Carnival Glory ship was attempting to dock in the morning when it hit a Carnival Legend ship, according to a statement from the cruise line.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel," the statement added.

Megan Skora was in her room aboard a nearby cruise ship when she heard the crash.

"I couldn’t believe my eyes seeing what I did," Skora told ABC News, noting it was the "first time I've ever been scared on a cruise line."

Two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico, on Friday.

Video footage of the incident captured the Carnival Glory sliding into the Carnival Legend, and the moment of impact shattering the Glory's back windows.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line told The Washington Post that the crash was an "allision," because technically one was not moving. The Legend was docked when the Glory crashed.

Passengers aboard the ships - who felt the collision firsthand - shared their varying experiences when from the point of impact.

Jordan Moseley, a passenger on the Carnival Legend, told Reuters that he was eating breakfast on the ship when he felt the crash.

"All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place," Moseley told Reuters. "A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel."

Another Carnival Legend passenger, Christian Maxey, was in his cabin below deck during the crash. He told The Washington Post that the ocean had been rough throughout the duration of the cruise, so he didn't think much of the crash.

"I don't think people really understood that we had actually hit something, given that our weather had been rocky," he told The Post.

Mary Anne McKinley, another passenger aboard the Carnival Legend, echoed a similar sentiment of mistaking the crash for a big wave.

"The crash wasn't too bad," McKinley told CNN . "Just felt like a big wave crashing into the ship."

The same could be said for one passenger aboard the opposite ship Carnival Glory, Maddison Haynes.

"Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat, so this morning we assumed something similar was happening," Haynes told CNN. "We felt a jolt and didn't really think anything of it."

Carnival Legend passenger Makenna Morris, who was on the fourth deck of the boat when the crash happened, told NBC News that she could hear passengers screaming as the Carnival Glory moved closer to their ship.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News . "That's when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking."

Being on one of the upper decks, Morris was able to see the damage of the crash first-hand.

"They (the Carnival Glory) ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. "The whole dining hall caved in and shattered."

Six passengers sustained "minor injuries" in the crash, The New York Times reported.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship," Chelsea Stromfeld, a spokeswoman for the cruise line, told The Times. "We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

"This Is Bad": Cruise Ships Crash Into Each Other At Mexico Port

Several passengers on the carnival ships and the nearby oasis of the seas - which the glory appeared to veer uncomfortably close to - posted videos and photos of the incident and the aftermath..

A Carnival cruise ship trying to dock in Cozumel, Mexico, crashed into an already-docked ship at the port Friday morning, leaving six passengers injured.

According to Carnival Cruise Line spokesman Vance Gulliksen, Carnival Glory was trying to dock when it "made contact" with the smaller Carnival Legend, which was already docked. He referred to the crash as, technically, an "allision," a nautical term meaning one of the objects was not moving when it was struck. It wasn't immediately clear how the accident happened.

Experts said they expected investigators to look at several factors: what the mooring plan was for the Carnival Glory, what role wind and other weather might have played, whether the ship's engines had any issues that could have affected propulsion and what was going on at the ship's controls.

"I cannot say with certainty here, but my hunch is that these ships are frequent callers on this port," says Kyle McAvoy, a retired Coast Guard captain and marine safety expert with consulting firm Robson Forensic. "It's probably something that is done very often by these two ships at this specific port and so it may be somewhat of a routine. So what went wrong this time? That's what this investigation will have to figure out."

Several passengers on the Carnival ships and the nearby Oasis of the Seas - which the Glory appeared to veer uncomfortably close to - posted videos and photos of the incident and the aftermath. A spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean International, which owns Oasis of the Seas, said the ship was not impacted and did not have any damage.

"Stop, stop, stop," said the woman, whose user name on Twitter is Maddie Morris. "Oh my gosh, this is bad."

"We are assessing the damage, but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship," Gulliksen said in an email. "We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

Early Friday, he said one passenger on Carnival Glory suffered a minor injury when he or she was part of a group of people evacuated from the dining room on the third and fourth decks of that ship. Later in the afternoon, Carnival sent an updated statement saying six passengers had gone to the ship's medical center with minor injuries. Photos on social media show a crumpled exterior and several broken windows.

"Someone could have died!" one man said as he recorded video from the pier.

Jordan Moseley, who was a passenger on Carnival Legend, said in a Twitter message that he was eating breakfast on the ship when the crash happened.

"All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place," he said. "A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel."

Christian Maxey, 20, was in his cabin a couple decks below the point of impact when he felt "a little bit of an impact." He said the ocean had been rough so far on the cruise, even forcing the ship to miss a stop in Grand Cayman.

"I don't think people really understood that we had actually hit something, given that our weather had been rocky," he says.

He said the first acknowledgement that something had happened came 45 minutes to an hour after the strike. The cruise director did not explicitly say what happened, according to Maxey.

"He said, 'We've had a boo boo,'" Maxey says.

Later, the captain gave an update with more information, but still encouraged passengers to enjoy their day in Cozumel. Maxey, who was sailing with his parents, said he would probably stay near the ship to get any updates. The voyage is scheduled to end Sunday in New Orleans, and Carnival said early Friday neither ship's itinerary would be disrupted.

"It's been a weird cruise," Maxey says.

Two Carnival cruise ships collided in the port of Cozumel on Friday morning.

Video footage shared by Twitter user @kaarinaa25 shows the Carnival Glory and Carnival Legend crashing around 8:50 a.m. local time.

“Hopefully nobody was there and hurt,” reads the caption.

In the video, as one of the ships pulls away, pieces of the other boat can be seen falling into the ocean.

Carnival Cruise Line responded to the video on Twitter with a statement addressing the crash and one reported injury.

“We are assessing the damage to both ships,” the cruise line wrote. “There is one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room on Decks 3 and 4.”

Twitter user @JayTea1993 shared a closer image of the damaged cruise ship. One of its corners is dented inwards, with parts of the balcony hanging loose. Multiple windows are smashed in.

According to cruisefever.net, high winds appeared to be a contributing factor in the collision.

The extent of the damage isn’t currently known. According to the vacation publication, the Carnival Glory is on a seven-night cruise to the Western Caribbean out of New Orleans.

The Carnival Legend is also on a week-long cruise to the same area from Tampa, Fla.

Injuries Reported After 2 Carnival Cruise Ships Collide In Mexico

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two Carnival cruise ships collided Friday morning at the port in Cozumel, Mexico causing extensive damage to one of the ships.

The collision took place between the Carnival Glory and the Carnival Legend.

Six people were hurt but their injuries are not serious, according to Carnival.

Carnival CEO Arnold Donald spoke exclusively to CNBC and portions of the interview are on CNBC.Com.

"There was probably a sudden squall of wind that pushed the ship. But occasionally ships will touch in port but of course, you try to avoid that. This is not serious--but any allision we take seriously —but there's no real major damage to the ships," he told CNBC's "Closing Bell" Friday.

A passenger on the Oasis of the Seas posted a video on Twitter of the incident in which you can see the Glory swiping the back portion of the Legend.

CBS News spoke to its travel editor who also believes Mother Nature is to blame.

"Suddenly a 30 knot squall showed up at the most critical time of that particular maneuver and there was no way for that captain to recover." CBS News' Travel Editor Peter Greenberg said. "You probably don't see the captain going in full reverse and still moving forward. It takes a while for any ship to stop."

A statement released by Miami-based Carnival reads, "Carnival Glory had an allision with Carnival Legend this morning in Cozumel. Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside. We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

An allision is a nautical term used to describe when a moving ship collides with a stationary object, such as another ship.

The statement also says, "There is one reported minor injury of a Carnival Glory guest that occurred when a group of guests were evacuated from the dining room on Decks 3 and 4."

Here is another Tweet showing the damage from the dock.

A Carnival passenger spoke to the CBS Tampa affiliate, WTSP, Friday.

"We noticed we were really close to them, and next thing you know we just felt this big bump that rocked the boat a little bit," Logan Humphrey said.

The cruise line says the incident does not impact either ships' itineraries.

The Legend departed from Tampa on December 15.

The Glory is based out of New Orleans.

ABC Action News has learned the Carnival Glory collided with the Carnival Legend, which departed from Tampa on December 15.

The collision happened around 8:50 a.m. local time.

Passengers have started posting video showing major damage to the Carnival Glory.

The Carnival Legend was supposed to return to Tampa on Sunday. The Carnival Glory is based in New Orleans.

In a statement, Carnival told ABC Action News the Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend, which was already alongside.

The cruise line later sent the following statement:

Carnival Glory had an allision with Carnival Legend this morning in Cozumel. Carnival Glory was in the process of docking when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already docked.

We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel.

Since our initial assessment, six guests with minor injuries have presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation.

Carnival is currently assessing the damage to both ships.

"The crash wasn't too bad," Carnival Legend passenger Mary Anne McKinley told CNN. "Just felt like a big wave crashing into the ship."

Carnival Glory passenger Maddison Haynes described the crash similarly.

"Last night we experienced some major motion on the boat so this morning we assumed something similar was happening," Haynes told CNN. "We felt a jolt and didn't really think anything of it."

Carnival Cruise Line resumes sailings following ship collision

Winter sailings are continuing as normal on the two Carnival Cruise Line ships which collided at Cozumel cruise port in Mexico .

Carnival Glory and Carnival Legend collided on Friday 20 December, lightly injuring six passengers on board Glory during the collision.

Carnival Glory  was coming into port when she “made contact” with  Carnival Legend , according to the cruise line corporation. The ship narrowly avoided Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas .

Carnival Glory arrived early on Sunday morning (22 December) in New Orleans as scheduled and debarked all passengers from the previous voyage. The ship’s departure was delayed for a few hours as workers complete some temporary repairs to the ship’s aft dining room.

“All other systems and features of the ship are operating normally,” said a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson. “On today’s departure and some future sailings, some adjustments to dining room seating reservations may be necessary until final repairs can be completed.”

Glory departed on its seven-day cruise yesterday and will operate as scheduled with the exception of the call at Cozumel, which will be Friday instead of Tuesday. Carnival Cruise Line is advising guests on future sailings to continue to plan for their vacations as booked.

Carnival Legend arrived on Sunday morning in Tampa as scheduled and debarked all passengers from the previous voyage. The ship’s seven-day cruise is operating as normal with the ship sailing its scheduled itinerary.

Carnival Cruise Line has thanked guests for their cooperation, saying: “We are looking forward to providing our guests with a great vacation and we appreciate their patience and understanding. Their cooperation has been nothing short of outstanding as we worked through the issues from Friday’s event.”

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. The cruise line believes “spontaneous wind gusts and strong currents” contributed to the accident, which it has described as an “allision”, a nautical term used to describe when a moving ship collides with a fixed object.

Two cruise ships have collided in the port of Mexico’s Caribbean resort of Cozumel, damaging the 952-foot-long (290-meter) vessel and leaving passengers stunned at the loud impact.

Six people were lightly injured on the massive ship named Carnival Glory, according to Carnival Corp, the world’s largest cruise operator. A passenger said the incident occurred during rough sea conditions.

“Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it made contact with Carnival Legend which was already alongside,” the company said in a statement. “We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship.”

Carnival added that the ship itineraries were not affected.

Civil protection authorities in Cozumel said the incident took place at around 8.30am local time and that officials were investigating.

Passenger Jordan Moseley said he was eating breakfast on the Carnival Legend, a 963-foot-long (294-meter) ship that can hold more than 2,000 passengers, when he felt the crash.

“All of a sudden we felt the ship rock to one side and then back into place,” Moseley told Reuters. “A few minutes later, the cruise director announced that the Carnival Glory had crashed into our ship while docking due to the high winds and rough ocean conditions in Cozumel.”

A video taken from an upper deck of Carnival Glory, which can carry nearly 3,000 passengers, showed pieces of the ship tumble onto the deck of the other vessel, with some splashing into the churning water.

“Oh my God, look at that ship!” an onlooker can he heard saying in the video posted on social media.

Other images of the battered vessel show a railing along the Carnival Glory stern bent downwards at a roughly 45-degree angle, revealing a twisted and mangled ship interior.

Carnival Legend passenger Makenna Morris, who was on the fourth deck of the boat when the crash happened, told NBC News that she could hear passengers screaming as the Carnival Glory moved closer to their ship.

"I started hearing people yelling and screaming on the Royal Caribbean," Morris told NBC News . "That's when I heard sounds of cracking and glass breaking."

Being on one of the upper decks, Morris was able to see the damage of the crash first-hand.

"They (the Carnival Glory) ran into us and I was like 'holy crap'," Morris said. "The whole dining hall caved in and shattered."

Six passengers sustained "minor injuries" in the crash, The New York Times  reported.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship," Chelsea Stromfeld, a spokeswoman for the cruise line, told The Times. "We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel."

The 2002-built Carnival Legend cruise ship is the 3rd of four Spirit-class CCL liners, with sisterships the fleetmates Miracle , Spirit and Pride , as well as Costa 's liners Atlantica and Mediterranea .

CCL Legend was last refurbished in 2018 and extensively in 2014 - before its debut on the Australian market.

The vessel (IMO number 9224726) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 229857000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ). 

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

The 2124-passenger ship Carnival Legend introduced some significant firsts for the company, including onboard wedding chapels and alternative restaurants. Spirit-class ships also boast an impressive 80% ratio of outside cabins and lots of nice little touches such as 'designer' martinis and museum-quality artwork.

Legend's US$47 million refurbishment in 2014 added the Australian-only slide Green Thunder, Splashdown kids' waterslides and drenching bucket, Bonsai Sushi restaurant, Serenity Retreat for adults, Cherry on Top candy store, RedFrog Pub and brand new Aussie beers (including the Thirsty Frog Summer Ale).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Legend staterooms (1062 total, in 28 categories) include 50 Suites, 634 Balcony, 171 Oceanview and 215 Inside cabins. The ship has 17 wheelchair-accessible cabins but no Spa cabins. Most cabins are sized 185 ft2 (17 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 40 ft2 (4 m2). Suites are 4 types (Grand, Vista, Ocean, Junior), the largest are Grand Suites (300 ft2 / 28 m2 plus 115 ft2 / 11 m2 terrace).

The boat has 12 passenger decks , of which 6 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Legend offers several restaurants and a couple of innovative dining concepts. The Unicorn Cafe buffet restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but also serves 24-hour complimentary pizza and ice cream. The full-service Truffles is a 2-level dining room with 3-course menu and wine list. New for Truffles is the experience 'A Taste of Nouveau', where diners can sample dishes that are normally served in the fine-dining Nouveau steakhouse restaurant (formerly called Golden Fleece). Situated on the top deck, it serves prime aged beef and lobster dishes.

The new concept "Long Lunch at Sea" takes place in the Nouveau on sea days. A 3-course lunch costs $30 and features dishes like blue-crab salad and grilled cold-water lobster. A fresh seafood platter is served for another $20. A selection of wines will cost an extra US$20 per person. Bonsai Sushi on Deck 2 is a completely new experience. Passengers can sit at tables for two and four or at the bar and choose from a menu featuring sashimi, sushi rolls, bento boxes, along with Japanese desserts and sake.

• The Golden Fleece Steakhouse (744-seat reservations only restaurant, serving seafood and prime beef steaks; with dance floor and stage for live performances)
• Unicorn Cafe Lido Buffet Restaurant (1396-seat self-service restaurant with complimentary food stations; operates as dinner bistro in the evenings)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The major theme onboard Carnival Legend is ”great legends in the history”. The theme is carried out throughout the 12 passenger decks, sixteen lounges, indoor and outdoor promenades. The "Fun Ship" has it all, including a 9-deck-high Atrium, golf program, duty-free shopping mall, video arcade, and 1800-ft2 kids' playground space.

The Atlantis/Legend Lounge is the best place for a meet-and-greet with friends and a good cocktail. Follies Show lounge pampers with Las Vegas-style show programs, and Sing-along Piano Bar features karaoke, and live musical performances. The Dream Team Bar is the spot to watch your favorite sports team as it has large-screen TVs so you can catch the action and enjoy your favorite drinks. There is also Satchmo's Club and Billi's Piano Bar. Dance away the night at the nightclub Medusa's Lair.

Itineraries

Carnival Legend itinerary program is based on roundtrip departures from homeport Sydney Australia to South Pacific Islands port destinations (Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji) during winter. In the summer months, the ship offers Alaskan roundtrip itineraries out of Seattle WA . On repositioning, the ship offers one-way cruises between Hawaii, Australia, and Alaska ( Vancouver Canada ).

• On May 6, 2013, was announced that starting September 2014, Legend will be the second Carnival Australia ship. The vessel was seasonally deployed (since September 24, 2014) to Sydney NSW, joining there Carnival Spirit (deployed permanently to Australia since 2012). Carnival Legend started its schedule from Sydney Harbour with a maiden Australian cruise on September 24, 2014. The 2014 Australian program included roundtrips to the Pacific Islands (8- to 12-day long itineraries). Carnival Australia cruise deals were available for booking in June 2013. The vessel became the newest and largest Carnival ship homeported in Sydney AU. The ship entered dry dock for refurbishment works in 2014 (Jan-Feb) in order to be “Aussified” accordingly.
• In May 2016, Carnival Australia officially confirmed Carnival Legend's homeporting in Melbourne in 2018 (February-March) for a total of 16 roundtrip itineraries. In the period February 6 - March 24, the liner operated on roundtrips from Station Pier. The scheduled itineraries ranged from 3-day short breaks ( Cruise to Nowhere ) to 4-day Tasmania, 10-day South Pacific Islands (New Caledonia and Vanuatu) and 11-day Around New Zealand. For the last time, Carnival Australia homeported a ship in Melbourne Victoria in 2013.

Starting October 2019, the ship was homeported in Tampa Florida , replacing Carnival Miracle .

• From Tampa were offered 7-day Western Caribbean roundtrips to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Roatan, with Belize or Costa Maya.
• On January 25, 2020, departed the 8-day voyage including a partial Panama Canal transit, with visits to Limon and Grand Cayman.
• The 14-day Panama Canal voyage from Tampa (December 1, 2019) visited Cozumel, Limon, Cartagena, Aruba, Curacao, Grand Cayman.

In 2020, Carnival Legend was scheduled for deployment in Europe (9- to 16-day itineraries) visiting 34 different ports in 16 countries.

• The liner's inaugural European season (2020) had to start with a 16-day Transatlantic crossing (NYC to Dover/June 3-19) visiting Qaqortoq (Greenland), Reykjavik (Iceland), Lerwick (Shetland Islands) and Ireland (Belfast, Cobh- Cork).
• 9-day "Norwegian Fjords" roundtrip from Dover (June 19-28) visited Norway (Bergen, Olden, Molde, Trondheim, Alesund, Stavanger).
• 9-day "Western Europe" repositioning (Dover to Barcelona/June 28 - July 7) visited Le Havre-Paris, La Coruna, Leixoes-Oporto, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Malaga.
• 9- to 12-day Adriatic and Mediterranean voyages were also planned (between homeports Venice and Barcelona) visiting Marseilles, Livorno-Florence, Civitavecchia-Rome, Naples, Kotor Montenegro, Corfu Greece, Valletta Malta, Croatia (Dubrovnik, Rijeka).
• The European season 2020 was planned to end with a 16-day Transatlantic (Barcelona-Tampa/Oct 30 - Nov 15) visiting Malaga, Funchal Madeira, Tenerife Canaries, Antigua, Puerto Rico, and Dominicana (Amber Cove).

However, all these plans were canceled due to the pandemic. The boat restarted operations in November 2021, with homeporting in Baltimore and roundtrip itineraries visiting Bermuda (6-day), Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas (7-day, 8-day), Southern Caribbean (14-day), as well as Gatun Lake-Panama Canal (14-day)

Carnival Legend's European program was eventually rescheduled for 2024 (17 voyages, homeports Barcelona, Civitavecchia-Rome, Dover-London) followed by a new USA-Caribbean program with homeporting in Tampa FL. Europe 2024 schedule starts on April 15th with the 12-day Transatlantic crossing (from Baltimore to Barcelona via the Azores) and ends on Oct. 26th (Transatlantic from Civitavecchia to Tampa).

In September 2021 CCL announced Carnival Legend's unique voyage from the USA to Greenland.

• The 14-night "Greenland and Canada" roundtrip from Baltimore is in 2023 (September 2-16). This ever-first for CCL itinerary to Greenland visits Nanortalik and Qaqortoq , as well as Canada's St. Anthony NF ,  Corner Brook NF and Sydney NS , and features 8 sea days.
• Curiously, as the North Atlantic cruise was sold out within just 24 hours, on the next week CCL added a second 2-week long crossing from the USA to Greenland and Canada (departure August 13, 2023, roundtrip from Baltimore, same itinerary/call ports) with prices starting from USD 2100 pp (inside cabin with double occupancy) and USD 3000 pp (balcony cabins).

In September 2023 Carnival announced Legend ship's homeporting in San Francisco (California USA) planned for 2025. From San Francisco (joining Carnival Miracle), Legend is scheduled to offer 10-day roundtrips to Alaska and 4-day roundtrips to Baja Mexico. The new deployment (2025) features two Carnival Journeys/longer itineraries - 14-day Panama Canal (Tampa to San Francisco/April 24th) and 15-day Hawaii and Mexico (roundtrip from SF/September 21st). Alaskan voyages visit Juneau, Skagway Ketchikan, Tracy Arm Fjord (cruising), Prince Rupert (BC Canada). Mexican voyages visit Ensenada.

Following the Alaskan season, in 2025-2026 the ship is homeported in Galveston Texas , with scheduled 4-day to 10-day Western Caribbean itineraries. The short breaks visit Mexico (Cozumel and Progreso), while the longer/10-day voyages visit Grand Cayman, Jamaica (Montego Bay and Ocho Rios), Roatan Honduras (Mahogany Bay), Belize City, Cozumel.

When debuted in August 2002, Carnival Legend was the first-ever "Fun Ship" with an onboard wedding chapel and alternative options for dining. The percentage of staterooms with oceanviews was also impressive – 80%, and 80% of them with balconies. The vessel has a 9-deck-high Atrium, duty-free luxury boutiques, an impressive golfing program. In February-March 2018, Carnival Legend was homeported in Melbourne Australia . The ship's first-ever New Zealand cruise was the itinerary January 7-17. This was also Carnival Cruise Lines first NZ cruise. The Legend ship also has the title of cruising the furthest north when in 2013 visited Greenland ( Qaqortoq ) during the 15-day Transatlantic crossing to NYC (Oct 7) from Europe. From New York, the ship was repositioned to Tampa Florida and since September 2014 started its Australian cruise program.

In 2021 (July-August) the ship entered drydock at Chantier Naval de Marseille ( Marseille France ) for regular maintenance and hull repainting (colors change).

Carnival Legend refurbishment 2021 review

During drydock refit 2021, to the ship were made some changes.

(deck 2) The Taste Bar was replaced with the Internet Cafe and the Shore Excursions desk was renamed Carnival Adventures.

(deck 3) The Holmes Library & Internet Cafe (17-seat, 24-hour venue) and the Wedding Chapel (30-seat venue) were replaced with a new video arcade The Warehouse. The Photo Gallery was renamed Pixels Gallery.

(deck 4) The Gigabytes Video Arcade (forward-portside) was replaced with The Cove (children-only breakout room for arts and crafts).

Carnival Legend refurbishment 2014 review

The list of deckplan changes after the ship's 2-weeks-long drydock in 2014 (done in Freeport, Bahamas ) includes:

• New Aqua Park "Carnival WaterWorks" with the "Green Thunder" waterslide (187 ft/57 m long, speed 25 mph / 40 kph), and the "Twister" waterslide (214 ft / 65 m long), plus kids splash zone with sprays, mini-racing waterslides, and the "PowerDrencher" bucket (water capacity 150 gallons / 568 litres).
• RedFrog Pub with the ThirstyFrog Red beer (draft brew, Carnival’s private label)
• Bonsai Sushi (sushi, sashimi, Japanese beers)
• Cherry On Top (candy store)
• (new entertainment options) "Hasbro, The Game Show" and "Playlist Productions"
• upgraded pools, upgraded fitness equipment
• new carpeting, tiling, wall coverings.

The boat's last wet-dock (May 2-14, 2018) was in Portland (Oregon USA) at Vigor Marine Shipyard, and included regular maintenance works and classification inspections.

Carnival Cruise Ship Return Delayed, Following Sailing Shortened By One Day

Carnival Legend experienced engine issues on Saturday afternoon off the coast of Florida, resulting in a delayed return to Baltimore. While the ship originally was slated to arrive on Sunday, the ship was forced to change course in order to disembark a passenger in need of medical attention. An email to passengers expecting to board on Sunday informed them that the ship would not be leaving Baltimore until Monday, and that the scheduled 7-night sailing would instead be a 6-night voyage.

An email to the Cruise Radio tip line said : “FYI. On the Carnival Legend sailing back to Baltimore from the Bahamas and 2 hours ago we were told the engine is broken. We have not moved since. Does anyone hear anything? I have never had this encounter before.” 

On Saturday evening , the ship’s automated information system (AIS) showed Carnival Legend off the coast of West Palm Beach, Florida, and moving northward at 4 knots or 4.6 miles per hour.

As of Sunday morning , the ship made an overnight call to Port Canaveral and is back on course to Baltimore with a cruising speed of 19 knots or 22 miles per hour.

Now that the ship is back on course for Baltimore, guests who are scheduled to board Carnival Legend on Sunday have been informed that the ship will actually arrive on Monday. An alert to embarking guests says:

Not a first for the Spirit class

Last summer, another Spirit-class ship, Carnival Pride, experienced issues while sailing in Northern Europe. The vessel was on a 12-night European cruise from Dover, England, and started experiencing issues after leaving Kiel, Germany.  Carnival Pride was taken out of service while the vessel underwent repairs in Europe. 

Carnival Legend, a 23-year-old Spirit-class ship, is currently homeported in Baltimore for the season. It left Maryland on Sunday, February 18, for a seven-night cruise to Half Moon Cay and Freeport, originally scheduled to return to Baltimore this Sunday, February 25. 

In 2019, strong winds attributed to Carnival Legend bumping into Carnival Glory while docked in Cozumel.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

Carnival may follow Royal Caribbean in making huge ship move

F or decades, Carnival and Royal Caribbean have pushed the size of cruise ships ever bigger. That has, in some ways, made the cruise ship, not the ports it sails to, the destination.  

It's a battle that has been ever-escalating with Carnival  ( CCL )  adding three ships in its Excel-class line while Royal Caribbean will soon take delivery of its sixth Oasis-class ship, Utopia of the Seas, which will be followed by its second Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas.

Icon of the Seas has claimed the title of "world's largest cruise ship." It will retain it for a while as Utopia will be slightly smaller. The ship is nearly 1,200-feet long and has a maximum passenger capacity of 7,600,

Carnival's largest ship for now is the Carnival Jubilee,  1,066-feet long with a maximum capacity of 6,631. (The fabled Titanic's length was just 883 feet.)

These ships, both Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival's biggest aren't just big for the sake of being big.

They offer experiences that previously were never found at sea. Icon of the Seas has a number of firsts including the indoor Aquadome which hosts its Aqua Theater as well as restaurants and bars. Carnival's Excel-class ships offer their own first-of-a-kind attractions including the Bolt Roller coaster.

Bigger ships offer more room for special experiences, but they also have limitations. Huge ships can only visit a limited number of ports because they're simply too big to dock in many destinations.

In addition, the sheer size of the biggest ships makes it hard to make deep connections with crew members, simply because you don't see them as often. Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival passengers have asked the cruise lines to consider building smaller ships.

That's something Royal Caribbean executives have spoken about, and now, Carnival brand ambassador John Heald has made a comment that suggests his cruise line has the same aspirations.

Royal Caribbean has plans for smaller ships

Royal Caribbean has not shared a formal plan to build smaller ships, but has hinted at what's internally known as "Project Discovery."

“It is something that's certainly deeply in our consideration and our planning at the moment that we have a lot of conceptual work going on," Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley shared during a 2023 sailing on Allure of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean Blog reported. "I think when we're ready we can we can announce steps that will take to to do just that.”

Bayley further confirmed the project in response to a Facebook question earlier in 2024.

"The Royal team is working on a new class. If all the needed hurdles are tackled, we can announce something this year. It is a journey," he posted.

Carnival hints at smaller ship plans

Carnival executives have not commented directly on new smaller ships, but Heald's recent Facebook post suggests the cruise line is aware that passengers want them.

"Do you one day hope that Carnival Cruise Line will build a smaller ship, a brand new ship say a new Spirit-class-sized ship?" he posted on his popular page.

Carnival's existing Spirit-class ships are the Miracle, Legend, Pride, Spirit, and Luminosa.. The line began with Spirit in 2001 and has not had a new ship since Luminosa in 2009.

These are not the smallest ships in the fleet, Fantasy class is a little smaller, but the two ships remaining from that line, Paradise and Elation were built in 1998.

Over 3,400 people responded to Heald's post, most of them positively. Many just answered "yes" but some shared their thoughts.

"Yes, I think the Spirit size seems to be easier for the older crowd to navigate," wrote Tina Byrd.

Some posters noted that the cruise line could use new smaller ships for ports that have size restrictions.

"Yes and please make it small enough to fit under the Skyway Bridge and make its home port the Port of Tampa, that would be awesome," wrote Marlene Bielawski.

Many posters made it clear the smaller ships simply have a different feel.

"Yes! Personally, the smaller ships have a more comfortable and intimate feel. It’s easier to get to know some of the crew as well. I would love a new smaller ship with some of the updated features," Will Monroe posted.
