Safe Place Travel Beds are inflatable safety beds for special needs travel or stationary. They are individually made with high-grade materials to withstand kicks and movement.

The beds are twin size, and adjustable with strapping that allows a safe place to attach to any size bed. Zippered, netted panels provide easy entry and exit on each side; the zippers have a locking mechanism to be used for additional security if needed for your loved one.

The netted side panels also give air movement through the bed. The floor is made of soft, felted plastic for comfort and water tight.

This bed comes in a traveling bag with a hi-pressure electric air pump ready to serve your special needs travel. For your convenience we added a 6ft. electric cord to give you extra room to walk around your bed as you inflate it.

Less than $4,000, The Safety Sleeper® is the most affordable bed on the market against comparable bed systems. Lower priced options exist, but they do not offer long lasting durability and protection and are meant for only small children. Other more comparable beds range in cost from $4,000 – $12,000.

How easy is The Safety Sleeper® to assemble?

The Safety Sleeper® should take 15 minutes to assemble. Instructions are included with the product and a link to our assembly video is provided. Here are two important tips about the assembly of The Safety Sleeper®: 1.) The Coverlet functions as the sheet for your bed. It is designed to fully enclose the mattress and has a hidden zipper. There is a separate video about the coverlet on our website. 2.) The air mattress is for TRAVEL USE ONLY. For daily use, a standard twin/full size mattress between 9-11 inches high is recommended.

What is the quality of The Safety Sleeper® fabric?

The Safety Sleeper® is made from medical grade fabric, meaning it is durable and washable and has been tested for performance requirements. The fabric is fire retardant, per the National Fire Protection Association’s standard methods of fire tests for flame propagation of textiles. It has also been tested for hazardous chemical exposure and is compliant with both the U.S. standard Proposition 65 and the European standard REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). Each product is made by professional industrial seamstresses and thoroughly inspected in our workshop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Server log information:  we retain information on our server logs for 3 months.

Correspondence and enquiries:  when you make an enquiry or correspond with us for any reason, whether by email or via our contact form or by phone, we will retain your information for as long as it takes to respond to and resolve your enquiry, and for 36 further month(s), after which point we will archive your information.

Newsletter:  we retain the information you used to sign up for our newsletter for as long as you remain subscribed (i.e. you do not unsubscribe).

How big is the Cubby Bed?

The complete Cubby Bed is 87" long x 54" wide x 72" tall and can support up to 1000 lbs. It can be used by any age, but most doctors recommend that babies do not transition from a crib into a bed until they are at least 3 years old. The Cubby also uses a full-size mattress that is 75” long and 54” wide, which can accommodate most adults.

Even with all of these preventive strategies, you can’t ensure a perfect trip. Consider your child’s needs and set realistic goals for how far you travel each day. Break the trip up if possible. Trying to rush travel can lead to more stress and anxiety and increase the chances for something to go wrong or for you to forget something. Take some deep breaths and relax.

While Traveling by Car

• Use a behind-the-seat organizer to store your child’s belongings. If this is within your child’s reach, then this will enable you to focus on your driving and maintain an organized car.
• Take frequent rest stops at designated rest areas off interstate highways or at gas stations. Allow your child to run around outside if it is safe to do so. If your child needs a visual cue to know when the next stop will be, bring along a timer and set it for 60 minutes. This way, your child knows that when the timer goes off, they will be able to get out of the car. Alternately, you can ask an older child to time the interval on the clock in the car and then pull the car over for a break at the intended time.
• If you know your child enjoys playgrounds, research playgrounds along your route in advance. Tell your child that the next stop will be at a playground so they will have something to look forward to.
• Try to plan your trip around times of the day that are routine nap times or bed times. You may choose to start your trip at night when your child normally goes to sleep. This will (hopefully) ensure your child will be asleep for a good portion of the ride.
• Get a map and draw a line along your route. Show your child each city and state you are passing through. Use a line to show your child where you are “now” and where you need to drive before you get to your final destination.
• If your child has an oversensitivity to sound, take a look at this transcript from the National Public Radio weekly show, Car Talk Hosts Ray and Tom Magliozzi (otherwise known as Click & Clack) discuss cost-effective options for minimizing road noises that can be painful to children with autism.
• Make customized activity bags for each child. If the trip is long, give your child a couple of items at a time so that the novelty does not wear off shortly after the trip begins. Have some old as well as new toys and activities in each bag. Examples include: a new coloring book, hand-held games like ball mazes or Rubik’s cubes, interactive books (with flaps, hidden pictures, or stickers), Legos, a soft squeeze ball.
• Pre-load an iPad with old and new games for single or multiplayers, and kid-friendly television shows and movies.
• Bring headphones with a variety of music to include calm instrumental songs for relaxation, kid-friendly tunes, and any other favorites.

While Traveling by Plane

It is a good idea to have earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child. If this is your child’s first time on an airplane, be sure to discuss the sights and sounds of the airplane ride prior to and during your flight.

• Try to minimize the number of connecting flights. It is easier to find a direct flight if you book early.
• Children with autism often have difficulty coping with the “popping” of their ears as the airplane ascends and descends. Many children do not understand this phenomenon. Give your child gum, hard candy, chew toys, or a drink during this portion of the plane ride; this encourages swallowing and reduces the effects of their ears popping.
• Contact the airport where you will be departing, explain your child’s diagnosis, and request a time to come to the airport and do a “dry run” of what your child should expect. The airport may allow you to come during a time of day where it is less crowded and let you walk through exactly what will happen on the day you leave, even allowing you to walk your child through the security gate. 
• If there is a layover at an airport, research the airport in advance to see if there is a child’s indoor play area. More and more airports are offering these. Take advantage of the play area, if available, and let your child run around, climb, play, and slide in order to get some energy out and be ready to sit for the next leg of your trip.
• Some airports have a USO Lounge that serves as a quiet haven for military personnel and their families. These lounges provide free amenities, including snacks, internet access, and TVs. Be sure to have your Military and/or Dependent ID cards handy.
• If your child is a picky eater or has allergies and if your airline will serve one or more meals during the coming flight, contact the airline in advance to ask if they offer special meals or have an alternate meal option. For example, you may find that the vegetarian meal provides more food that your child will eat than the regular meal. Do not forget to plan for favorite snacks ahead of time as well.
• Arrive at the airport in plenty of time for your flight. Explain to the airline at check-in that your child has autism and request bulkhead seating (at the front of the economy section). Provide proof of diagnosis as reinforcement. The front seat will give you a little extra leg room and will likely put you close to a restroom. If looking out the window will be interesting for your child, request a window seat. On the other hand, if your child may become anxious at the thought of being in the air, request an aisle seat or an inside seat. If the flight will not be full, request a row to yourself.
• Go through the security checkpoint early to avoid the crowds. Give the security guard an information card that explains autism and increases their understanding of why your child may not follow the instructions.
• Board the airplane at the first call for special boarding. Having a child with autism requires extra time to find your seat and get comfortable. This will also give you extra time to briefly talk to the airline attendant(s) about your child’s special needs. Give them an information card if necessary.
• Bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones for your child.
• If you have a child who is a frequent wanderer, it may greatly benefit you to invest in a type of personal locator product in the form of a watch or attachable belt unit. With all of the other things you need to keep track of, such as luggage, carry-on bags, other children, and plane tickets, this may ease your worries should your child wander out of sight when you turn away for a moment to dig in your bag.
• A less expensive way to track your child is to get a military-style dog tag made with your child’s information (name, age, parents’ names and contact information, allergies, and other pertinent information, such as specifying if your child is nonverbal). You can also get a bracelet made with the same information.
• Or, get creative and pin the same information on a small laminated index card attached to your child’s shirt or shoelace. For an older, verbal child, teach the child their name, age, parents’ names, and a phone number to call. Role play a scenario in which your child accidentally gets lost. Discuss the “Information Booth” at airports and how your child can find one. Write key words down for your child on an index card, such as “Information” and “Lost.”
• Carry a recent photo of your child to show to security personnel in case your child wanders.

Safe Place Bedding Travel Bed Review

Traveling with a special needs child can be really stressful! From medications to special dietary needs, safety concerns to accessibility, there are so many possible disasters waiting around every corner. It’s no wonder so many families with special needs kids choose to just stay home!

One of the biggest concerns families have when traveling is safe sleeping while away from home. Your child’s room is probably designed to make sleeping as comfortable and safe for them as possible. You may have a safe special needs bed , climate control, allergy air filters, weighted blankets, and even nighttime monitors . How can we possibly recreate this safe sleep environment in a hotel room or at grandma’s house?

While we may not be able to pack and bring everything with us (although I have been known to pack video monitors and ambient sound machines even for a weekend trip), having a safe sleep bed will make a vacation much less stressful.

We recently purchased a Safe Place Bedding Travel Bed and just made our first weekend excursion with our new bed. I had my doubts about this bed at first because it is inflatable and needs to attach to a stationary bed, but I was pleasantly surprised by how durable, safe, and easy to use it was!

• Not too heavy and does not take up much luggage space

The Safe Place Bedding bed is priced at $420, but the company often offers sales or promo codes, so keep your eye out for deals! Yes, that’s still a lot of money, but compared to the thousands you might spend on other travel beds, it’s actually quite affordable! We were also able to use grant funds to pay for the bed, which is easier to do when your purchase is less than $500.

Another huge plus for me was how small the duffle bag is that contains the bed. It isn’t the lightest thing, but again compared to other bedding solutions, it’s very easy to pack! We have so many things to pack for our son to keep him comfortable and safe; the fewer bags we need to take with us, the better. The Safe Place Bedding bed fits in a 24x12x12 gym duffle bag – and that includes room for the electric pump as well!

It took us about 10 minutes total to set up the bed when we got to our hotel room. This was our first time ever using this bed, so I think we can get that down to 5 minutes next time we use it. Set up was so easy! I did buy the electric pump that comes with the bed (it’s an additional cost), but oh man, was it worth it! Just set the bed where you want it, use the pump to inflate the sides, strap the bed in place, and you’re done!

We took a video of ourselves setting up the bed so you can see how easy it is. And remember, this was our first time ever using this bed:

The valves have special stoppers that allow air in, but not out, making it really easy to inflate. You can remove the stoppers when deflating the bed. Taking the bed down and fitting it back in the bag was also really easy!

I did feel that Ivan was safe in this bed. The inside of the bed is about a standard twin size, but it is required to be strapped to a full or larger size bed for safety. The straps hold the bed in place really well and I was not at all worried about it tipping or falling off the bed. If you are worried about your child getting out of bed on their own, the zippers can clip closed from the outside.

I also like that there is a lot of air flow through the mesh sides of this bed, so I wasn’t worried about the inside of the bed over heating. This also made setting up a video monitor easy.

The bottom floor of the bed is made of a soft almost velvety material, so if your child sleeps without blankets for safety reasons, the bottom of the bed will still be comfortable. The comfortable floor also means that the bed could be be used as a safe tent at the beach or for camping.

Cons of the Safe Place Bedding Travel Bed

• Does not come with its own mattress
• Possibility of punctures

The walls of the bed are made of thick, reinforced plastic that are designed to withstand kicks and bites, but any small puncture would affect the bed’s ability to inflate. The company does say that punctures are unlikely, but it is something to keep in mind when purchasing the bed.

The only other real con for me is that it does not come with its own mattress. If you are traveling somewhere where there is a bed (remember the bed must be a full size or larger), then you are in good shape. If you are visiting family or staying in a small hotel that does not have an extra bed, however, you may be placing the travel bed on the floor. In that case you will have to provide a mattress to insert into the bed, which could also lead to entrapment issues along the sides. Depending on your needs and where you travel to, it may be difficult to always have a full size bed to strap the travel bed to.

With that said, though, I would still highly recommend the Safe Place Bedding Travel Bed . It was easy to pack, easy to carry, easy to set up, and provided a safe and comfortable place for Ivan to sleep in our hotel room. I would definitely recommend also purchasing the duffle bag and electric pump – they are necessary accessories!

The location was very central, awesome in the very center of the city. Further, it was close enough to the absolute centre of Moscow, Tverskaya Street and of course, the Kremlin and main tourist attractions and affordable;))

Well, Wi-Fi was a bit slow.

Perfect and exceptionally nice location for Moscow, near Firebird/Travel All Russia, sightseeing, and Red Square or Old Arbat street in the other direction. Brand-new & good looking room.

Grounds were kept fairly clean, breakfast was delicious and great. The location was marvellous for us - minutes from cafés and restaurants. The food was appetising and there were variety of dishes in the menu.

Wonderful and magnificent location in a very quite area walking distance to a church and a theatre. Early check in and late check out.

It was nicely equipped, tidy and with access to a fresh air.

The location was incredible, at a walking distance from a celebrated red square. It was about 30 km from the airport. The staff members were perfectly fine. I loved new-fashioned and silent room here with good bed, good lighting, WiFi.

Well, it was a real good stay for a business trip. Nice location in the centre made it easy to get to key attractions.

The breakfast here was delicious with omelettes. The location offered was great and lovely short walk to the main attractions, and centre of Moscow. It also was right in the center of Moscow.

We ate at a pleasant restaurant with a varied menu. The square view was an unexpected bonus.

Ordered breakfast, it was a bit overpriced, it should be way much better, really.

The room is reasonably priced. The breakfast is incredible and very good, available with omelettes.

Fantastic accommodation with amazing setting so close to the restaurant downstairs, and numerous bars, cafes and restaurants.

Truly enjoyed the nicely equipped rooms. The location was central, right by the main tourist attractions and shops, UGOLEK RESTAURANT, and all major sightseeing places. Also, a celebrated red square was 2 km away from the hotel.

Clean and ideal place, fantastic and delicious breakfast with plenty of options. Marvellous and excellent location in Moscow, close enough to Kremlin, Bolshoi Theatre, and main attractions. Situated only 1 km from a Red square.

Breakfast a bit overpriced.

My kids and I enjoyed being there. The restaurant was pleasant with friendly staff, I ordered freshly cooked dishes. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the staff was perfectly fine. The location was great, close to restaurants and eateries. Everything was simply good.

Reasonably large and fairly clean venue with a nice value and outstandingly accommodating and accommodating staff. Marvellous, excellent location near to the closest metro station and the Tverskaya Ulitsa, a Polish church, and Russian church onthe corner and Kremlin towers and churches too and centre of Moscow. Also, very near to the red square. Wonderful stay for the holidays.

All the employees were exceptional and pleasant. It was silent, nicely equipped and with all the equipment required.

The restaurant was good with a varied menu, I tried light dishes. The location was perfect, a 10-15 minute walk from a Red square...

Great place for a 4-night stay. The staff is courteous, room is very clean and location is good. Take a look at Presnensky district, it's worth it. Breakfast here costs 1450 rub per person per day.

Street was noisy.

We liked the hotel and its excellent style. Breakfast was amazing there. Located just 1 mile from bolshoi theatre;))

Very clean rooms with a work desk and beds inside. Very convenient location, fantastic prices. Choosing for lunch Simple Things, which is situated 500 feet away was a good idea. Stay here if you want to visit red square, 10 minutes walk away...
