salt roaming international calls pricing changes 2022

Salt Changes Roaming and International Call Rates

Salt is making changes to the regions it uses for mobile roaming and international phone calls. As a result, roaming in or making calls to certain countries will become much more expensive, while rates for other countries will become much cheaper. In this report, moneyland.ch explains what is changing, and what you should be aware of.

From June 10, 2022, Swiss telecom service provider Salt is rezoning the regions it uses to price mobile roaming and international phone calls. Salt now divides the world into four zones which it names Europe, Travel, World, and Far. These zones are used for roaming and for international phone calls. Up until now, Salt used six different regions titled A, B, C, D, E, and F for roaming, and numbered 1 to 6 for calls to other countries from Switzerland.

The prices themselves are remaining unchanged, but Salt is launching new bundles to match the new regions. The rates charged for many countries are remaining the same, but prices for calling or roaming in a number of countries are going down or getting higher.

New Europe zone

For all of the countries included in new Europe region, the prices are the same as they were previously. These include 21 of the 27 EU member countries, plus Great Britain and Norway. EU countries which are not included in Salt’s Europe region are Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovenia.

Customers can choose between three different data packs: 1.5 gigabytes for 24.95 francs; 3 gigabytes for 34.95 francs; 12 gigabytes for 99.95 francs. The bundles remain valid for 12 months. Using data roaming at standard rates – without getting a bundle – is still expensive, with each megabyte costing 2.95 francs. Making calls while roaming at standard rates is also expensive, costing between 1.19 and 4.99 francs per minute.

Balkan countries and the US now much more expensive

The new Travel region includes many popular travel destinations. For many of these countries, Salt used to apply the same rates as it did for nearby countries like France and Germany. The cost of calling the following countries or using roaming there is now much higher than it was previously: Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Turkey, and the US (including Alaska and Hawaii). It is interesting that Salt is now charging much higher prices for some EU countries than for others.

The price increases are substantial. The standard price for using data while roaming is going up by 408 percent. But using data or making calls at standard rates is never a good idea, as they are always overpriced. The prices of data roaming bundles for the countries mentioned above are going up by 43 to 60 percent.

Table 1: Price changes (Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Turkey, the US)

Other Balkan countries and eastern European countries

The new World zone includes countries like Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Philippines, Serbia and Kosovo, South Korea, Ukraine, Vietnam. Many other countries across most continents are also included in this region. For some countries (see table 2), phone calls are becoming massively more expensive. Data roaming, on the other hand, is now slightly cheaper.

Table 2: Price changes (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo, Ukraine)

Thailand, South Africa, and Brazil now much cheaper

Some popular holiday destinations like Brazil, India, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, and Thailand are now in the new Travel region. For these countries, the prices are now dramatically lower than they were before.

Previously, one gigabyte of roaming data for these countries cost 150 to 200 francs. With the new data roaming bundles, the price is between 12 and 26 francs. That is a 90-percent price reduction.

Salt’s product jungle

Unfortunately, Salt’s product offering is still a jungle when it comes to mobile roaming. For each of the four zones, Salt offers a call option, a data option, and three different data bundles. Customers must be particularly cautious when using the call and data options. After you activate an option, it is automatically renewed and billed to you every month, until you terminate it. That is not very customer friendly for holidaymakers. Customers should also pay attention to the fact that options expire on the ninth day of every month.

Salt customers who need to use data while roaming in other countries should use Salt’s data packs instead. These bundles are valid for twelve months. You pay once when you get the bundle, and it is not automatically renewed, so you do not risk being billed on an ongoing basis like you do with the data options.

Great small family owned and lived at campground. A nice couple that has sites at their place literally setting right in front of the Guadalupe Mountains. 20 some minutes away from Guadalupe national Park. Minutes from Dell City. You can see the Sand Dunes from this place. This is a quiet, secluded place. NOT A BIG CAMPGROUND. The owners are friendly and helpful. Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

200 gallons of diesel fuel spill into Parleys Creek, travel downstream to SLC waterways

by Matthew Jacobson, KUTV

Hazmat crews on Thursday, April 25, 2024, work to clean up diesel fuel from a semi crash in East Canyon in Salt Lake County, Utah, that eventually traveled down a nearby river and into Salt Lake City six miles away. (Photo: Utah Highway Patrol)

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Authorities on Thursday were warning residents and visitors in Salt Lake City to stay away from Parleys Creek - which runs alongside I-80 before diverting north at Sugarhouse Park - after approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the waterway during an early-morning semi-truck crash.

The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. when a westbound tractor-trailer lost control on a wet I-80 at milepost 133, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said.

Also located at mile 133: a storm drain.

Capt. Brandt Hancuff with the Salt Lake City Fire Department said the truck's fuel tank as ruptured in the crash, and an estimated 200 gallons of diesel poured directly into the storm drain, which connects to Parleys Creek.

Several hours after the crash, fuel could be seen and smelled at Tanner Park, approximately six miles downstream from the crash.

Hancuff warned residents to stay out of the water and keep their dogs away from the river. He added that the contaminated water doesn't have to be ingested to be harmful.

"It's also an irritant on the skin and the fur of both humans and pets," he said. "We just ask you again to stay out of the water."

Hazmat crews had absorbent booms in place in multiple locations that are designed to capture the fuel, which floats on top of the water, making it easier to mitigate, Hancuff said.

The fuel was not affecting any drinking water, he said, and he said crews were confident that the cleanup efforts were successful, and "anything downstream from Sugarhouse Park should be safe."

He wasn't able to provide a timeline on how long it would take to remove the fuel from the areas upstream, though, and said the department would keep the public updated via its X.com account .

LEHI – Peggy Lundberg was all set to explore Virginia with friends, until life forced abrupt changes in her travel plans.

"I canceled the ticket," Lundberg said. "American Airlines gave me full credit for it and said I had a year to use the credit."

Seven months later, she was ready to use her $1,200-plus flight credit.

"I went online to book the ticket and it wouldn't let me book it," she said.

Lundberg called the airline's customer service, pronto, and got bad news. Someone had already used her credit to buy airfare in Pennsylvania for a woman with a completely different name.

"I don't know her. Never heard of her. Don't know anybody by that name," Lundberg said.

It gets worse. Lundberg won't get her credit back, even though American Airline's website says only she can use her flight credit since it's her name on the original ticket.

"'I'm sorry this happened but there's nothing we can do about it,' is what he said," Lundberg said, of her call to American's customer service. That didn't land well with her, so she contacted the KSL Investigators.

Are airlines required to refund stolen credits?

Federal law can protect your credit cards or bank accounts from thieves and hackers, but those protections don't exist for travel credits.

"It's really a case-by-case basis," said Katy Nastro of the travel website, Going. "There is no formal law around whether or not they need to reinstate them."

So, how do flight credits get stolen? Often, it's through fake travel booking websites, Nastro said.

They're slick, often looking just like legit sites asking all the right questions with the added lure of big discounts.

"Scammers are looking to sort of get your information delivered on a silver platter," Nastro said.

Information like names, addresses, payments and travel credit numbers.

What happened?

The KSL Investigators reached out to American Airlines to ask what happened with Peggy Lundberg's credit.

It appears, in her case, the thief actually booked a ticket in Lundberg's name using only a small portion of her flight credit. Then, the airline re-issued the leftover credit as trip credit which can be used by anyone.

"I would like to get my credit back," she said.

We asked American Airlines about that, and they gave us a "no," pointing to their travel credit terms and conditions that state lost or stolen credits won't be replaced. Passengers are told to guard those numbers "as you would cash."

So, no credit refund for Lundberg. An American Airlines spokesperson wrote in a statement, "Customer service is paramount to American, and we do not tolerate scammers taking advantage of our customers."

Is there any recourse?

Nastro said travel credits vary from airline to airline, and "no" will not always be the answer. She advises if you get an answer you don't like to politely hang up and try again.

"It doesn't hurt to continually contact the airline," she said. "Because it could just be that you are in the right and you need to get in touch with a person that has maybe a bit more experience with your specific case."

I'm a working mom who enjoys solo travel. I've learned how to keep myself from spiraling into mom guilt while I'm away.

  • I'm  a working mom who incorporates solo trips into my business travel.
  • I love traveling as a family, but, at times, I miss the spontaneity and flexibility of solo travel.
  • To minimize mom guilt, I speak with my son about trips before leaving and ensure his schedule stays the same.

Insider Today

My 6-year-old looked at me as I stood by the door, suitcase in hand, before leaving home for a weeklong business trip to the other side of the world. He walked over, held my hand, and said, "Why are you going away for so long? I'm going to miss you a billion trillion times."

My heart skipped a beat, and my not-so-new best friend, "mom guilt," walked through the door. I felt like it would stay with me for the entire trip. Still, I gave my son a big hug and walked out the door.

I have always enjoyed exploring new places. The thought of boarding a flight brings a big smile to my face. Unlike many people who hate the idea of work travel, I enjoy it. I love checking into a hotel, going to the gym or taking a dip in the pool, grabbing a local coffee on my way to work, going for walking meetings , and exploring the city.

My husband is also an enthusiastic traveler, and together, we have explored the world far and wide. Since my son was born, we've focused on getting him used to traveling. We took him on a 10-hour flight when he was 4 months old, took 30 flights before he turned 2 , and have taken him to nearly 20 countries. It's already clear that the travel bug has bitten him too.

But while traveling with children is fun, I missed the spontaneity and the flexibility of solo travel . You can stay wherever you want, eat what you like, and explore the city without worrying about pushing a stroller, managing bedtimes, or keeping a close watch on your child in an overcrowded area. I also loved how I could sleep past 6 a.m.

A packed working-parent schedule doesn't allow for many solo travel opportunities, but work trips are my way of relishing in something I enjoy.

Moms need to stop feeling guilty

Working moms have long suffered the guilt of not being able to spend enough time with their children. A study conducted by the British Psychological Society in 2022 found that gender stereotypes can predict the levels of guilt that working parents feel, with working mothers feeling higher levels of guilt compared to working fathers.

Another study, conducted by Pew Research in 2015 , showed that children's academic and emotional well-being is not contingent on the time they spend with their mothers.

As a working parent who loves to travel, the feeling is all too familiar. The guilt gets exacerbated when friends and family often look at me with surprise and ask how my child is managing without me. No one asks me that question when my husband is away on business — but that's another conversation for another essay.

I decided to give my guilt structure

After adding more extra days on business trips, I realized how liberating it was to travel alone.

I first tried solo travel while planning a business trip a few years ago. After a week of meetings in New York, I stayed for an extra night and treated myself to a glass of wine at the One World Observatory in downtown Manhattan. I just sat there, swirling my glass and watching the world go by. The sense of calmness was a feeling I rarely find as a working mom, and I loved it.

Over the years, I've stopped by the Great Wall on a trip to China, popped into the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and spent a weekend exploring Angkor Wat, a temple in Cambodia, after a week of meetings in Singapore.

I have learned to handle and even bounce back from my mom guilt spirals.

Here are some steps that helped me deal with the guilt.

1. Lean on your partner or family for support

I can't help but think of the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child." It does.

Lean on your partner — or friends and family — for support while you are away. They can help you stay connected with your children, reason if your child is upset, and help you be an important part of your child's schedule even when you are in a different time zone.

2. Talk about your travel with your child

Let your child know how excited you are about an adventure. Before you hop on the plane, show them pictures or YouTube videos of where you are traveling.

My son knows how much my husband and I love traveling and is very engaged when I talk to him ahead of a solo trip. We talk about the city, the stories behind it, the food, and the people — and he even requests what souvenirs to bring back.

For example, before my trip to China last year, my son and I discussed the Great Wall and how it was built. He was fascinated and asked me to send him pictures throughout the trip, which helped ease my guilt.

3. Follow your child's schedule

I've found that my son feels more confident and comfortable when his day is predictable and familiar. Ensure that whoever is looking after your child follows their set routine; children thrive in a routine .

Identify the times during the day when they need you the most and plug into their daily routine with Facetime and video calls. It may not be the same as being there in person, but it likely makes them feel comfortable knowing you're just a phone call away.

Time zones can make coordinating schedules tricky — bedtime can come when I'm in the middle of a meeting — so I schedule voice notes, pictures, and videos. I'll even send my husband detailed voice notes to play to our son before he goes to sleep. The bonus is I wake up to some adorable voice notes that are a great start to the day.

4. Walk the guilt away

Despite doing all of the above, the guilt still sneaks in occasionally. So I immediately go out for a quick walk to clear my head .

I remind myself this may feel tough, but I am teaching my son the importance of leaning into your interests and passions. I am also teaching him that his parents may travel for work, but he'll always have a support system back at home.

It's not easy, and sometimes it feels like moving mountains, but the thrill of exploring a new place and the tiny cuddles at the end of the trip make the journey worthwhile.
