When you compare it to simply sitting in a chair with your feet on the ground, there’s a big difference in comfort. And if you like to put in a lot of miles on the trail, elevating your feet a bit can help you recover a bit for the next journey.

You can also use it for additional seating space if you have extra guests, or even use it as a makeshift table when needed.

Adding an awning isn’t exactly the most original idea for your RV campsite setup, but it’s still worth including. It can add a touch of class to your space while also providing you with some much-needed shade (or shelter from rain).

Many RVs come pre-equipped with a roll-out awning on the side, but you can always add on your own as well.

But why stop there? Consider adding a drop shade for even more sun protection. These additional shades are simple to attach to your existing RV awning, expanding its coverage area and blocking out excess sunshine that might otherwise heat up your outdoor living space. Campsite decorating might not be high on the list of every #vanlife enthusiast I know. But we all love looking at the gorgeous scenery outside, and we enjoy snuggling up inside our van or RV, especially during the colder months. Making our surroundings beautiful can apply as much to the inside of the RV as to the outside. Adding extra charm to our campsite is the perfect way to accentuate your surroundings and create a little oasis while sitting outside.

RV patio decoration is a great way to extend your living area. Whether you are boondocking off-grid or set up at one of your favorite campgrounds. Having a few basic campsite decorations means the difference between squatting atop a fallen log full of ants or watching the wood fire burn while swinging on a comfortable hammock!

If your idea of heaven is being outside with a cool drink, inhaling the scent of campfire food, and having nothing standing between you and the view – then it’s time for you to up your campsite decorating skills by following through on some of these easy campsite decorating ideas.

When you decorate outside your camper, the results are well worth the little bit of effort it takes. This post will show you how easy RV patio decoration can be.

Let’s start with campsite decorating basics

Rv patio decor storage ideas, campsite decorating essentials, a few campsite patio rules to keep in mind before putting on the glitz, cute and cozy campsite decor , must-have campsite decor items.

How much room do you have inside your RV for transporting and storing campsite decorations? Before you jump into the exciting world of RV outdoor living ideas and start buying RV patio decor essentials, please make sure you have space to store them.

1 . Make a list of any item that can double up as something you will be able to use outside. This list might surprise you – kitchen utensils can double up for use around the campfire cookout; rubber mats laid out to handle foot traffic inside can be placed outside too; interior cleaning supplies can double up for outside use, for example, the stuff you use to clean the oven can be used to clean the campground barbecue area (just make sure the cleaning supplies you use on the barbecue grill grid are organic; ditto goes for solar-powered lighting, spice and seasoning racks, and windproof candles.

2 . Not everyone wants to haul a family-size RV camper or trailer around with them. If you have a pop-up trailer or sweet teardrop camper , you might want to read my post on how much they offer in storage space. 3 . Have a family meeting, or sit down with your partner, and discuss how they would like to decorate outdoors. Believe me, when I say that kids have some really good ideas – my son asked me if I could buy a collapsible box with a lid for toy storage on the RV patio; somewhere he could put his toys instead of leaving them on the ground. There’s been no more stepping on Lego bricks or losing precious items since we got it. And as for storing the box inside the RV, it’s a fold-up dream. 

Likewise, if you are a couple or retired, your RV patio decorating ideas should be on the same page. A shy partner might not like the thought of hanging out a welcome sign or a personalized flag; likewise, a happy-go-lucky hiking fanatic might not relish their partner turning the outdoor living room into a glamping site!

You might choose to sit outside during a balmy summer’s day to watch the sunset; what about huddling around your campfire cooker or propane fire pit on a chilly afternoon in the fall? No matter where you choose to camp, these are some campsite decorating essentials to make the experience so much more rewarding.

• Solar bug zapper for indoor/outdoor use (can double up as an emergency light)
• Weatherproof cushions (for making that fold-out chair more comfortable and can double up as somewhere for kids to sit)
• The best folding chairs your budget allows (if you have a toy hauler or RV with extra storage space, and lightweight comfortable chairs will suit your outdoor living area)
• Shade umbrella/awning curtain / portable gazebo (can double up as windbreaks or sun shades when you visit the beach) 
• Sunblock cream for all the sunlight you’ll be soaking up!

At campgrounds and RV parks –

• Make sure you aren’t infringing any campground rules/regulations before setting up your patio outside area
• Check with your neighbors before stringing up flashing string lights; it might keep them awake if they like to sleep with the curtains pulled back
• If the campsite is pet-friendly, check there are no pets with the idea of marking their territory on your new RV patio rug (see portable fencing)
• Ensure the plants you use to decorate your RV outside are non-toxic for children and pets
• Check nothing is placed outside your demarcated camping ground boundary
• Before setting up your birdfeeder, check the campground for cats
• Not every campground / RV park provides barbecue areas or fire permits, so if your campground has a burn ban, a propane fire pit might be the solution

And for when you are camping in your RV off-grid, in a parking lot, or boondocking:

• Make sure nothing can blow away in a sudden gust of wind, especially plastics, and tableware
• Look for a couple of convenient stones if you need to weigh down any lightweight items, such as used paper plates, plastic cups, and tablecloth edges – or else use handy little picnic table clips
• Check portable fences have been erected safely and securely if you have children and are camping near water
• Bring all food inside after eating; wash and rinse utensils you can’t trash.

These campsite decorations might not be essential, but they are so cute! If you want to stamp your patio area with a taste of your personality and worldview, consider sticking one of these around your RV’s outdoor space.

1 – Outdoor Rugs

This is a somewhat controversial item to add as the first thing on the list because I’ve read of people considering outdoor rugs unnecessary unless you are camping at the beach or on uneven surfaces. But after camping in a variety of places, from the desert to the beach. I have to disagree. My outdoor rug is the first thing that I set up whenever we arrive at places, and our green (faux-grass) turf was the first thing we purchased when we started living full-time in our 5th wheel toy hauler .

I absolutely love how much the look of your rig can change by changing the outdoor rug , and having a dirt-free area for the kids and the dogs is amazing!

Below you can see an example of the patio area created by Libby from @behrnecessitiesrv on IG, she didn’t only add layered rugs to her outdoor area. But also set up a mini-pool, creating an adorable and practical area for both grown-ups and little ones.

2 – Hammocks

Don’t knock a hammock until you’ve tried it. They are super-comfortable and take up little to zero storage space. Out of the way of ants and dampness, you can even decorate your hammock with an insect net if you want to snooze away those balmy post-cookout afternoons in peace.

For those of your camping in treeless campgrounds, you can also get standalone hammocks.

3 – Tablecloths and other coverings

A few campground picnic tables are better off covered up, let’s be honest. And while it has been proven some hardwoods are capable of absorbing and killing 99.9% of bacteria (the same number as most kitchen sprays), you still might want to protect little fingers from picking up splinters by laying down an outdoor tablecloth made of vinyl. Vinyl is the perfect table covering because it is heavy enough to withstand strong winds and also wipes clean. 

4 – Blankets

Nothing says Home Sweet Home quite like a blanket. Leave the sleeping bags and duvets inside – it’s time to break out the Mexican serape s, cotton throws , and multi-purpose picnic mats . 

5 – Strings of lights

Although these are complete non-essentials, nothing makes a mark like a string of fairy lights decorating your campsite. The really good news is that you can get solar-powered ones or shop around for rope lights, canning jar solar lights, or even remote-control timer lights guaranteed to keep the rodents away from your RV.

NOTE OF CAUTION : If you are in close proximity to other campers, please consider using outdoor lights, keeping in mind how they could affect your neighbors. Just as you have to be careful about noise, lights can be intrusive for light sleepers and for those wanting to enjoy start nights. (This is especially applicable when using very bright LED lights)

6 – Wooden chopping boards

While we are on the subject of the amazing antibacterial properties of hardwood, a beautiful wooden chopping board is lovely for slicing bread, pizza, or steak. It’s one of those versatile pieces that double up for both inside and outside the RV (always follow sanitary guidelines ).

7 – Personalized items

If you are loud and proud about your sports team, celebratory festival, or party theme, then it’s time to say it in words and colors. And let’s face it, no campsite decor is complete without at least one of these cute and cozy campsite decorations hanging on your patio.

8 – Don’t forget about your door!

One simple project we did with the door of our 5th wheel was to add peel-and-stick wallpaper when I changed our RV lock , it added so much impact when the door is open. And to the inside when the door is closed.

Your comfort is at stake here, so this is no time to look for cheaply-made eyesores. Remember that, just like an ordinary chair, your camping chair must be built to last for the longest time, so durability, comfort, and longevity are key factors when looking for the best camping chairs.

Checklist: back support; cupholder large enough to handle any size drink; height adjustable so everyone in the RV can use it; easy to clean; folds away to fit your available storage space.

Of course, if you are stationary, you have so much more flexibility because size, weight, and portability are not as important. So in this case, you can choose regular chairs and 100% base your selection on your style and comfort.

The outdoor carpet/rug

If you have a family like me who are die-hard barefoot-in-the-summer types, then you need an outdoor carpet. Not only are they a really nice way to lay the foundation for your campsite patio setup, but they also protect bare feet from thorns and dying bees lying in camouflage among the leaves and grass! The Screened-in Canopy Tent / Screen Room

If you have had one too many summer night cookouts ruined by bugs, it might be time to get an outdoor gazebo-style screened tent. These are styled like gazebos but have walls made of transparent, bug-proof netting. Some models even come with sun/wind panels you can use to cover the screens.

13 Permanent Campsite Must-Haves to Make Your Outdoor Space feel like Home

Whether you have a seasonal campsite or live full-time in a campground, living in a trailer is a new way of life. You will be spending a lot of your time outside, so making this space feel cozy is important.  Here are 13 Permanent Campsite Must-Haves that will help you to enjoy your site and make it feel a little more like home.

When we first moved into our campsite at the KOA, we had no idea what to expect. Since it was our first time living in our fifth wheel, we didn’t know how much time we would be spending outside. To our surprise, we spent more time outside of our camper than in it!

Although we love living in our RV, we realized that our outside space was just as important. So I’m sharing 13 of our favorite things to make your permanent campsite feel a little cozier!

13 Outdoor Must-Haves for Stationary RVers

After moving into your campsite, you will probably find that you spend a lot of time outside. Spending a little time and money on this area will make you love full-time RVing even more. 

1. Comfy Chairs

The very first thing we purchased after moving into the KOA is some chairs for our campsite. It was apparent that our camping chairs just weren’t going to cut it. We ended up opting for a versatile chair , so we could use them at our folding table or around the campfire.

If you are truly permanent and don’t plan on leaving your campsite in the near future, getting a chair nice chair set is worth it! Make sure you get some patio ideas on Pinterest before just purchasing something. Have a theme and style to go by, to make this space feel extra homey.

2. Solo Fire Pit

When my husband and I moved into our fifth wheel, he bought me a Solo Fire Pit as a “house warming” gift! We have gotten SO much use out of it and truly love it. We’ve had a lot of people ask if it’s really worth all the hype…. And we recommend this fire pit to EVERYONE… it’s really that awesome!

3. Large Outdoor Rug

Since we have a toddler, having a large outdoor rug has been essential. But even if we didn’t have a child, we would definitely get a large outdoor rug. It adds a bit of coziness to the space and keeps things a bit cleaner!

Below is is our favorite rug because it’s easy to clean, foldable and comes with a bag to keep it neat in the undercarriage!

4. A Small Mat for in Front of the Door

When living in a campground, they typically don’t have a nice concrete pad. Full-timers get gravel or dirt, which means you will be tracking this into your RV. We ended up getting a cute little mat from Hearth and Hand @Target . I think this also adds a homey feel even if you didn’t need it to keep your RV clean. 

5. Outdoor Table

If you don’t plan on moving often, getting a semi-permanent table would be a nice touch! We ended up opting for a black folding card table , so when we travel from SC to ID each year we can easily fit it in our undercarriage storage. 

This table comes in handy for dinners, doing work outside, letting laundry dry, and even just setting things on it while you are hanging out!

Every RV owner needs a grill! On those super hot days when you don’t want to make your AC units work any harder, you will have the option to cook outside. Again, if you don’t plan on moving get something that’s more permanent. But if you plan on traveling at all, purchase something that’s portable.

We have a Lodge grill , that my husband absolutely loves!!! But, here are our favorite portable grills:

7. Skirting for Your Trailer

Most people that were permanently living in their trailer had skirting around the bottom . This helps to keep critters from getting in your trailer, looks cleaner can hide things and helps regulate the temperature. 

You know that someone is a full-timer when they have wooden stairs or a deck! This definitely adds to the feel of a home. Some campgrounds may not allow this though and require everything you own to remain stationary or you need approval. 

We opted for MORryde stairs , so they can go with us and are a bit more sturdy than factory stairs.

9. Outdoor Lighting

Nothing says home like some string lights! This was a MUST for us since we spent a lot of time outside. Most permanent campsites have lighting of some sort, whether that be a solar porch light, string lights, or tiki torches.

10. Raised-Bed Garden

12. Portable Outdoor Fence

Having a portable outdoor fence is another touch that can make your RV feel like home. If you have kids or dogs, this is a must! It’s a bit of an investment, but it’s totally worth it.

The usual focal point of any campsite is the picnic table. It’s where we gather for meals, morning coffee chats, children’s crafts and play  board games .

So, why not decorate your table with an interesting centerpiece or arrangement? (We’ll get to that later)

In addition to your camping picnic table, you’ll want some other tables to make your outdoor living space efficient and more comfortable.

Get a large  camping table to set up your outdoor kitchen. It can also be used for serving dishes, snacks, condiments as well as your serving dishes and utensils. Also, add one or two small folding tables to place between your camp for drinks and snacks.

Say you don’t want to lug a big zero gravity chair around in your RV but still want to take an afternoon nap under the trees. A camping hammock may be the answer!

Now, camping hammocks come in lightweight fabrics and are super compact when they’re stored. Hammocks also come in a large variety of colors. So, you can incorporate your hammock color into your campsite decorating theme.

And because they’re so light and versatile, you can move them wherever you need them. They compact down to a tube that can slip easily into most any compartment.

Sunshade & Windshade

Similar to the beach umbrella, beach sunshades aren’t just limited to beach use. They’re absolutely perfect for creating a shady nest area over your picnic table or play area for your little campers.

Install a sunshade near the hammock or over your zero gravity chair to prevent you from getting a sunburn.

But, it can also function as a wind shade. They come in awesome lively colors that will brighten up your campsite in a quick snap like any of these three below.

Campsite Party Lights

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to decorate your campsite because different sources of light creates amazing ambiance.

You can use small solar power pathway lights to light your way to your RV door. Or, you go all out with decorating your campsite like Las Vegas with lights galore!

Personally, I absolutely LOVE our solar tiki torches because we don’t have to worry about carrying flammable fuel and sooty torches.

OH, and, fairy lights are all the rage because they’re unobtrusive and fun to look at as they sparkle.

We found canning jar solar fairy lights that we just screw on  small crystal jelly jars . We place them all around our RV or walkways for ambiance and to light our path.

We also love our solar white string patio lights because they don’t take expensive batteries to light up our campsite. Plus, they come with a remote so we can extinguish them when we want to look up at the stars or go inside for the night.

Plants & Flowers

It’s a given that lowers will make your campsite pop with happiness. You can do so much with just a single vase of flowers making it a focal point of your campsite decorations.

So, you’ve set out your tablecloth on your camp tables, why not add some little colorful flowers or plants?

You can never go wrong with bright colorful gerber daisies or bouquets of white daisies or sunflowers . They go with any decor theme from farm house to beach house and everything in between.

We’ve seen some campers hang colorful hanging baskets from their awnings to decorate their campsite too!

Tablecloth or Table Cover

I’m sure you’ve seen photos of people cleaning their sewer hose on the picnic table? Or how about other campers letting their dog or cat planting their chocolate starfish right where you set your plate?

It’s hard not to notice how nasty most campground picnic tables are. Most are splintering, cracked or just plain gross. Who knows what’s lurking on their surfaces.

So, an outdoor table cloth is an absolute must at any campsite! I prefer using a washable outdoor table cloth  to lay out on your tables or ones made of vinyl.

Outdoor Beverage Dispenser

Keeping a large unbreakable drink dispenser out on your picnic table or camp table keeps to keep the kids from running in and out of your RV just for a drink.

But you can make it more fun with an eye-catching  drink dispenser to add some bright and cheery festive decor and yes, thirst quenching too!.

Around the Campfire

Camping is all about the ambiance of the campfire, storytelling and stargazing. But, what if the campground doesn’t have fire pits? That’s easy, just bring your own! Just make certain your campground allows them.

There are two types of fire pits; wood burning and propane.

For a sensible wood burning fire pit , get a Solo Stove as it’s virtually smokeless and burns hotter to keep your fingers and toesies toasty. They are more geared for big rig RVs that can afford the storage space. Or, they’re perfect  for seasonal or permanent campsites. 

However, a  portable propane fire pit  can be set up anywhere without worry of setting the woods on fire because there are no burning embers or sparks.

Our two favorite propane fire pits are the Little Red Campfire which we keep in our Winnebago View. It’s the perfect size propane fire pit for small RVs and Vans. We use it in conjunction with our 5# propane tank which costs literally pennies to use.

Our second favorite propane fire pit is the Outland Fire Bowl . It fit perfectly in our fifth wheel storage compartment under our coach. It takes a 20# propane tank ; the same one you use with your barbecue grill.

Also, it’s also a smart idea to place a fire retardant mat  fire pit over your outdoor carpet as the heat or embers could melt or burn what’s under your fire pit.

Outdoor Movie Theater

Okay, so with all of the above, we’ve created the perfect ambiance with all the campsite decoration ideas laid out for you.

We think you’ll agree, the best parts of camping is the campfire, looking up at the stars and enjoying the camping vibe.

But, wouldn’t it be cool to watch the silver screen outdoors too?! Did you  know you can create your own outdoor movie theater right at your campsite?

While keeping the your campfire aglow, you can flick on your outdoor movie projector  onto the movie screen and let the show begin! If you have a good signal on your Starlink or WiFi hotspot or jetpack, you’ll be at the best movie theater in the world.

Now, what’s movie without popcorn? You could make your popcorn 5 different ways! Yep, you read that right! FIVE ways to make popcorn while you’re camping!

Sometimes we will make  Jiffy Pop over our camp stove .  Or, we’ll make some  campfire popcorn .

But for those who don’t mind using up their batteries , you could make microwave popcorn  but to me, that’s not the healthiest. So, why not try your hand at making popcorn in a BPA-free  microwavable silicone popcorn popper ! It’s camper friendly because it’s unbreakable and collapsible too! Plus, it comes in about 10 different colors so each camper can have their own color!

Or, you can just plug in a  popcorn popper into your electrical outlet and pop away until your little camper heart’s desire!

For me, camping is about stripping away all the “stuff” and getting back to the basics. Having a movie theatre on your site is not only ridiculous but rude to other campers nearby. It’s so sad how commercialized simple camping has become. But I’m sure you will make a couple bucks from the links you posted because that is all these suggestions are really for anyway… that, and a fine way to ruin camping.

Also, please realize a lot of people are now full-time RVing. So asking them to give up ‘living’ to appease others isn’t the answer (politely, of course). That said, all of our suggestions should be taken and given with discretion and understanding. As long as campground rules are adhered to, I see no problem with a family enjoying an outdoor movie or playing flashlight tag during regular hours as long as they’re not obnoxious about it. Even ‘we’ had to learn to give a little as we tool, prefer quieter settings. But, camping is about bringing families and friends together. CAMPSITE SETUP IDEAS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Whether you are an avid camper or an outdoor adventure aficionado, or a timid beginner searching for a travel trailer manufacturer , there is one universal underlying truth: there is no such thing as being overly prepared for camping. 

The better prepared you are, the safer, and the more enjoyable your experience will be. In this article, we will examine a couple of things to keep in mind that are important in the campsite setup. 

Organizing Camp Gear At Home

A great camping experience outdoors actually begins indoors at your home. There are numerous handy checklists out there to give you some nifty campsite setup ideas and help you pack everything you need and check it off your list. We suggest using a checklist unless you want yourself looking for personal hygiene products out in the wild. 

Make sure your checklist includes campsite essentials, tools and repair items, kitchen related items, campsite extras, clothing and footwear, health, and hygiene products to complete your campsite setup. 

Once you have your checklist ready, you can gather all your stuff together and examine gear that has been sitting in storage. Check that your tent has everything it needs, that your first-aid kit has been replenished after your last trip, and that your utensil assortment and tool gear is complete. 

If you have a bundle of kids following you around the house, make them responsible for packing their things in a duffel bag. That way they won’t complain if you have forgotten to pack their favorite stuffed toy, plus it gives you more time to pack more essential items than worry about Mr. Snuggles. 

When you are packing and going through your checklist try to keep your gear organized according to their use. Keep a separate camp box for your camping kitchen setup, another for personal hygiene items, and so on. Having everything organized makes it much easier to find what you are looking for when you are looking for it.  

Perhaps one of the most basic campsite setup ideas is this: pack strategically. Keep headlamps and flashlights, the tent, rainwear, insulation, and first aid kids where you can access them quickly in case of emergency scenarios.  

Established Campgrounds

Established campgrounds are a favorite among beginner campers because they offer several amenities that make campsite setup easier. They typically provide picnic tables, restrooms, and sometimes water pumps. If you are camping in bear country, established campsites have bear poles where you can store your food and keep Yogi the bear and his friends from stealing your lunch. 

There are numerous right camping spots for trailers if you are looking for RV campsite setup ideas or tent camping in established campgrounds. Campgrounds typically have a flat area for your shelter and a fire ring. Campsites designed for a trailer or RV may even have electrical or water hookups and other campground amenities. 

Keeping Organized In Camp

Now let’s move on to the practicalities of campsite setup. 

Pitch Your Tent

• Remove any rocks from the area where you plan to pitch your tent. (Rocks can be very annoying under your sleeping bag!) 
• Lay a tarp and use it as a tent footprint on the ground where the tent will be, to protect the bottom of your tent. 
• Find which way the wind blows and arrange the door of your tent to open away from the wind direction. This way, in case of rain, you won’t have rain coming in your tent through the door. 
• Pitch your tent by staking the corners out first and putting the poles together. Place the poles’ ends in grommets (or on hooks) around the edge of the tent. The poles will bend into an arc giving the structure of your tent. 
• Once your tent is set you need to put the waterproof rainfly on. Usually, rainfly buckles to your tent’s body or has grommets that slide over the ends of the tent poles. 
• Organize your sleeping ground within your tent. Put your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow inside your tent. Remember that moisture accumulates on your tent walls so anything that directly touches your tent’s inside walls may get wet. 
• A final word of caution for your campsite setup: keep food away from your tent. It will attract bears or rodents. 

Arrange The Rest Of Your Campsite

• Locate the bathroom if you are in an established campground. If you are primitive camping, designate a toilet area. 
• Check area regulations, especially when it comes to setting up a campfire. 
• Set up your seating near the fire pit and place your lanterns around. 
• Organize your camping kitchen setup and picnic table.  
• Think about food storage and trash disposal and make sure you keep the campsite clean. 

Campsite Setup With RV

When you are setting up your campsite with an RV, remember to follow these RV campsite setup ideas:

• Fill your freshwater tank beforehand at the campgrounds’ water station.
• Inspect your site on foot before maneuvering your RV. Find the optimal location and avoid uneven ground or other obstacles such as big rocks and fallen trees. When you are ready to drive your RV and park it, have someone carefully guide you. 
•  Situate your RV so that it is level from side to side. If you need to, use leveling blocks. 
• Use wheel chocks to secure your RV.
• If you are using a towable RV, unhitch the tow vehicle and lower the jack to ensure that your RV is level from front to back. 
• If applicable, connect your RV to power, water, and sewer.

Travel Trailer Setup Checklist: Setting Up an RV Campsite for Beginners

When setting up your RV travel trailer as a beginner, it’s essential to take your time and do it correctly. You don’t want to rush through the setup procedure and wind up with an RV that isn’t set up safely or prepared for an enjoyable camping experience.

We’ll cover everything you need to know – from unhitching the trailer to RV hookups, and give some helpful tips that took us a while to learn!

Below we’ll take you through a step-by-step travel trailer setup, so you are fully prepared to take your RV to a campsite. You can also download our travel trailer setup checklist below.

Arriving at Your Campsite

The first thing you want to do before pulling into a site is to inspect it. If you can choose your spot, drive around until you find one that suits you and ask yourself these three questions.

• Is it level?
• Does it have any obstructions for backing in, putting out the awning or slide outs, or using the solar panels?
• Where are the hookups?

You can usually inspect the site from the driver’s seat on a flat, pull-through, concrete pad campsite. However, getting out and surveying the area on foot is best for anything more complicated. We still follow this process at almost every site. It doesn’t pay to be in a rush.

Let’s break down what to look for when answering the above questions.

Is the Campsite Level?

Picture where your RV camper will be in your mind. Take note of sloping and where you might need leveling blocks. Look for bumps and dips to avoid. If a campsite is too crooked, it may be best to drive on or ask the campground if you can be reassigned to a different spot.

Obstructions

Trees, large rocks, camping tables, hookup pedestals, or any other obstructions make it hard to get into a site and can damage slide-outs and awnings. Trees cast shade that can help keep an RV cool but also significantly reduce the output of solar panels and dirty the RV’s roof.

Hookup Locations

Ideally, a campsite will have water, electrical, and sewer hookups on the driver’s side of the RV centrally located where you will park. The passenger’s side is left with room to set up camping gear.

In reality, there isn’t consistency with hookup layouts between campgrounds or even campsites within some campgrounds. Sometimes the hookups can be spread out so far that extra hoses or electrical extensions are needed. We have experienced campgrounds with water and electricity on the driver’s side and the sewer right in the living space on the passenger side.

Try to line up the RV’s sewer connection with the campsite’s. Sewer hoses tend to be the shortest hookups and the most cumbersome to set up. Bends in sewer hoses accumulate particulates and make them harder to keep clean.

RV Leveling and Unhitching

Once you’ve pulled or backed into your campsite, it is time to continue the RV checklist by leveling.

A device like the  Levelmate Pro  can speed up the leveling process by telling you exactly how many inches one side needs to be raised in real-time, but an  RV level  or a  level  from your toolkit can do the job with some patience.

Leveling Side to Side

If you have a towable RV such as a fifth wheel or travel trailer, it is crucial to level the rig side to side across the wheelbase before unhitching.

Looking at your leveling device, determine which side needs to be lifted, and place a lifting device such as  Lynx Levelers  or an  Anderson Leveler  under the downhill wheels.

Pulling the RV onto Levelers in 3 Steps

• Ensure your vehicle has its parking brake on before getting under the tires.
• Pull forward or reverse onto the leveler slowly. (This is where a spotter comes in handy to let you know when you are on the blocks.)
• Check your level and add or remove blocks until level.

Chock Wheels

Before unhitching, it is imperative to place wheel chocks under the RV wheels. The potential of an accident from a moving RV is not worth skipping this step that only takes a few seconds.

The  heavy-duty rubber chocks are more sturdy and grip well. Two sets are recommended on extreme slopes or wet/soft ground conditions.

Unhitch RV and Level Front to Back

Now that your RV is level side to side, it is OK to unhitch the RV from the tow vehicle. Follow these five steps to unhitch and finish leveling your travel trailer.

• Extend the tongue jack until pressure begins to be taken off the hitch ball. (Use a  tongue jack stand  or support block to protect the pad of your jack and reduce the amount of extension required.)
• Unplug the 7-pin electrical connector.
• Remove all equipped weight distribution or sway stopping devices, emergency breakaway brakes, and safety chains.
• Release the hitch ball lever and extend the tongue jack until the tow vehicle can be safely pulled forward.
• Using your leveler again, extend or retract the tongue jack until the RV is level front to back.

Put Down Stabilizers

When level, the stabilizer jacks (sometimes called scissor jacks) are extended to reduce the rocking that occurs in RVs from walking, wind, and other shaking. Stabilizers minimize strain on the frame of an RV when a slide out is moved in or out. Always put the stabilizers down before putting the slide out.

It is important to note that these are not the same as the automatic leveling systems in some motorhomes. If the stabilizer jacks are lifting the RV, you risk damaging the jacks and the RV. Stabilizing jacks support the RV by being pressed firmly to the ground, and no more.

Many RVs come with electric stabilizers that can be raised or extended with a switch. Manual jacks use a turn handle, but this  drill adapter  makes it less strenuous and speeds up the process. Jack pads are recommended to keep jacks from sinking and reduce exposure to dirt and moisture.

Connect Power

The electrical power cord is usually the first on the list to get attached. Often the slide needs to go out, or the air conditioning needs to come on. Plugging into electrical keeps those bigger loads from hitting the batteries.

Your RV will require 30 or 50 amp service, but the campground may not have a site with your particular circuit. The good news is that an adapter easily connects a  30 amp plug to a 50 amp outlet or a 50 amp to a 30 amp , allowing you to stay in any available electrical spots.

Using a Surge Protector

You also will want to protect your RV from electrical disturbances with an RV surge protector. There are several types of surge protectors. A basic model surge protector plugs into the power pedestal and is the most affordable. Other versions of surge protectors are installed permanently in the RV , so you don’t need to set up anything at camp.

The pedestal’s breaker should be off until the RV is plugged in securely. Once the breaker is on, the surge protector will take a few seconds to examine the incoming power for problems like bad wiring before allowing electricity to flow. If there is a problem, the surge protector will display an error code and block the electricity.

Connect Water

If your site has a water spicket, a hose can plug directly into the RVs city water inlet or fill up the water tank. Use a hose rated for drinking water . Green water hoses have dangerous chemicals like lead, so skip those.

High water pressure can burst an RVs plumbing. Protect your RV with a water pressure regulator . A basic one does the job but can leave you with poor water flow. An adjustable water regulator set around 45 PSI protects most RVs and keeps the shower flowing nicely.

PRO TIP:  Adding a Y-adapter at the spicket is a good tip for several reasons. One, it gives you a place to quickly wash your hands or hook up a black tank flush hose. Second, the lever is much more convenient to turn off and on when filling the water tank.

Water filtration.

Water filtration is a big topic and can be approached in many different ways. At a minimum, protect yourself with an inline one-micron water filter to reduce harmful contaminants, reduce odor and improve the taste. Add a pre-filter for two-stage filtration to reduce sediment, rust, and other particulates.

Advanced Water Filtering

It is debated if water passed through only inline filters is suitable for drinking. There are more advanced and expensive water purification systems if you plan to regularly drink from the RV water tap.

• If you have the countertop space, many people swear by the Berkey system .
• Advanced water filtration systems that can be installed in storage areas are available from companies like Clearsource .
• Acuva systems use UV light to kill bacteria and viruses and are more compact and mount under the sink.

Connect Sewer Hose

Connecting the sewer at arrival can be a convenient way to dump as needed. If your sewer connection significantly intrudes on another camping spot, try to be courteous and wait until you’re not disturbing your neighbor. A pair of waterproof gloves is recommended to use while setting up your sewer connection.

Setting Up the Sewer Hose Support

Use a sewer hose support to slope away from the RV to keep things moving and prevent build-up in the sewer hose. Lay out the support evenly, avoiding low spots and turns in the hose to make things clean when it comes time to disconnect.

Connecting the Hose

Attach the hose to the RV first, then lay the hose across the support. Remove the cap from the ground drain, quickly screw a clear elbow adapter into the threads that held the cap, and connect your hose to the adapter.

You’re ready to dump your tanks!

There may be items specific to your RV to complete your setup. You may have a slide that needs to come out, a satellite TV to set up, or an internet antenna.

I have included some beautiful RV decks from Instagram, a few YouTube videos showing how to build an RV deck, and some RV deck decorating ideas to enhance your RV’s outdoor space.

Just note, not all these camper deck ideas are going to work for your situation.

RV Deck Idea #1 – simple square deck

This is a simple, yet awesome and functional RV deck.

The clever thing they did with this is they built to deck to have a double-duty: they also use the deck as an RV step stabilizer. They built the deck to go underneath the bottom step of their stairs and this helps stop their RV from swaying.

You see in their photo description they say it is quieter too.

In one of their other Instagram photos it shows them building the deck frame. I can’t be certain, but it looks like the built the base using 2×6’s set on concrete deck blocks .

RV Deck Idea #2 – A fantastic RV deck and cover idea

Check out this awesome deck with covered roof. They’ve done a great job making their RV deck look inviting and festive with some awesome decor. Plus, the deck has a covered metal roof protecting them from the elements . This probably helps keep the inside of the RV cleaner too…they can leave their dirty shoes outside.

RV Deck Idea #3 – long RV deck spans length of RV

Here is a great wooden deck that is long enough that it spans the length of the trailer . You can read his description above to see how he built it. And if you click the arrows in the picture above you can see “in progress” pics.

I like how he chose deck dimensions to minimize wood waste and labor time. He bought 16-foot long 2×4’s as the base, so he made the length of the deck 32-feet long. And the deck is 6-feet wide so he only had to cut the 12-foot deck boards in half to get the deck surface.

Looks very good.

The 2 pictures above show how the deck looks 2 years after being built. And that is with no stain or sealer.

RV Deck Idea #4 – movable “floating deck” sections

This is a good example of movable RV deck. Each of the sections is 6-feet x 8-feet so I wouldn’t say it is super portable…but they could be moved.

Instead of having all the boards go in the same direction and look mundane, they made it more visually appealing by staggering the direction of the deck boards .

If you click the arrow button on the right side of the picture above you can see the “in progress” photo of this RV deck.

They keep the wood off the ground by setting the 2×4 base on top of cinder blocks. Then they used shims to get it level. (In this case it looks like they use an old kitchen cabinet door to prop up one end.)

RV Deck Idea #5 – deck with railing for added security

This RV deck features a railing which is a good safety feature, and may be required depending on how high you make your RV deck.

It is a little hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like they made this deck using composite deck boards (plastic mixed with wood fibers). These are a great low-maintenance decking option. And it looks to be sitting on solid concrete footings…not movable concrete blocks (but I may be wrong?).

RV Deck #6 – pallet RV deck

This is a very cool deck that they built out of pallets. You can usually find pallets for free on second-hand marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace.

The cost of wood has really gone up (in my neck of the woods anyway) so a cheap RV deck idea like this one is appealing. Watch the video above to see how they did it.

RV Deck Idea #7 – Decks from Sunrise Decks

The company Sunrise Decks (located near Dallas Texas) makes a line of RV decks and porches that can installed without tools.

These RV decks would be excellent for seasonal campsites or permanent installations.

They have a lot more great pictures on their Instagram account which I encourage you to check out.

These guys built their RV deck in modular sections with the goal of being able to move them around in a pickup truck when they leave their seasonal camping site.

It turned out well and the RV mat on it looks good too.

I was inspired by the RV deck idea #11 to include globe lights in this section. These are LED bulbs so they shouldn’t be as power-hungry as incandescent bulbs.

These globe lights are popular on Amazon . These are the 100-foot long string, but you may only need a shorter, 50-foot string for your RV deck.

RV Deck Idea #13 – Dorothy’s handmade wooden deck

I came across this gem while researching Googling images for this article. So I reached out to the deck builder and she was nice enough to allow me to share this with you.

The deck builder’s name is Dorothy, and on her website she does a great job of showing us the steps it took to build this deck. You can see in the picture above that her ground was sloping so she had some challenges that she overcame with careful measuring, and adjustable post brackets.

In the photo above you can see the concrete piers that set in the ground and then the adjustable metal brackets holding up the vertical 4×4 posts.

Pretty cool…they made the small section that is near the front of the trailer movable so if the trailer needs to be moved and the backed in again, that small section can be out of the way.

When you’re on the road, it’s a great feeling when your camper feels like home. Decorating ideas for travel trailers or RVs can make it feel this way. No matter which you choose, campers come with fairly standard and overall boring interiors. Give your camper a personal touch to make the place feel more like home. Aesthetics are usually not the primary point throughout the manufacturing process. One of the closest comparisons to RVs you can make is a yacht. After all, yachts are nothing if not RVs on water. Yachts tend to have a refined, bougie, impressive aesthetic, whereas RVs tend to be more practical in design. 

That’s not to say that the question isn’t a little bit disingenuous. RV floorplans are similar across manufacturers but only similar within their respective classes. You will find that long fifth-wheels almost always share identical floorplans, with a few things changed here and there. The same goes for Class As, Bs, Cs, travel trailers, and teardrops. 

RVs are also victims of trends. As of right now, there are nine or ten trends, depending on where you look, that encompass each space on an RV. For example, the latest trend across the board is the use of lighting in an aesthetically artsy fashion. Trends of this nature often give the impression that RV interiors look the same.

Even the newer more modern interiors can look the same so decorating ideas for travel trailers will continue.  

1. Paint the Interior Walls

Painting your camper walls is a great way to add a personal touch without worrying about going overweight. Choosing your color scheme is a great way to make your camper feel more like a home away from home.

Softer lighter colors can make a small space like a camper feel bigger than it really is. Adding an accent wall with a darker color can make a small room feel larger too!

Peel and stick sheets are easy to use and inexpensive. You can also use them on the ceiling for an easy wood plank ceiling look.

5. Maybe It’s Time for Some Cool Clocks to Decorate Your Travel Trailer

String lights around your living space or bedroom to give your camper a good ambiance or provide accent lighting. Lamps can be rather heavy and only provide light in a single area. Plus you have to stow them away when on the road. Christmas lights are much lighter and provide even lighting.

13. Install Bunk Beds to Gain Space for Your RV

Stacking beds in your camper gives you more space for activities. You’ll have more space to sleep and hang out with the family. Plus, bunk beds can add a cozy cabin feel to your camper. Take the cabin feel with you wherever you go.

14. Install Hanging Wicker Baskets in Your Travel Trailer

Rather than building shelves, you could hang wicker baskets on the walls for added storage. These are great for bathroom items or pantry storage. Shelves can be heavy, and that weight adds up quickly. Baskets are a much lighter option. Plus, everything will fall off of a shelf!

Think about how your decorating can also incorporate some form of storage. Add storage compartments under the bed or under couch cushions, for example. This is a great way to tuck items out of the way until you need them.

Is it really okay to paint the interior?!?

Yup it sure is…

We feel like we have a hotel on wheels so we call it our Mobile Marriott. Since it’s our third one we abbreviate it as MM III.

I love to put up the beautiful written peel and stick Wall decals. I buy mine from dollar tree! Now I think they’re $1.25. But they have stayed up on the doors for about three or four years now. Light on the walls and light on the Wallet!

I just aquired a 1971 open road my son and I are planning on fixing it up, so you’re ideas help allot. We’ve already decided to call it Dessert Rose, so the inside theme will be southwestern.
