By Raza Vakil

During the research process of buying a new RV for yourself, you’ll need to consider the “use-case scenario” for the camper you’re purchasing. Will you be using it on weekends? Will it just be a 2-day trip every month, or do you plan on living in it full time? For those looking to use yours all year round and tow it without any hassle, here are our top 5 best 4 season travel trailers under 6,000 lbs GVWR.

What puts an RV on the list: There isn’t a specific category of 4 season travel trailers per se. However, we factor in features specific to making your seasonal trips easier. 10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers For 2023

' src=

  • RV Trailers and Motorhomes

Consider the GVWR (not the UVW)

Many RV manufacturers tout the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of their trailers. But adding cargo like fresh water, propane tank(s), food, clothing, bicycles, and other camping equipment to the trailer can add hundreds of pounds to that UVW number.

GVWR is the weight to know when buying a trailer for a lightweight truck or passenger car tow vehicle.

Knowing the GVWR of small campers is the key to safe towing on road or while off-the-grid camping. Now, let’s dive into our list of the best lightweight travel trailers for 2023.

Travel Trailers Under 6000 Lbs

Published on February 2nd, 2020 by Levi Henley (Full-Time RVer, Content Manager and Media Specialist for RV LIFE)

Lightweight travel trailers are great for families who want an outdoor vacation. Unlike their heavier counterparts, they’re good RVs for your SUVs, weigh under 6,000 pounds, and come in floorplans that cater to families.

Finding the perfect family-friendly travel trailer can be a balancing act. You want an RV that gives everyone enough personal space. Yet, having a tow vehicle that has a gas budget that’s bigger than the trip itself can ruin your travel plans.

In this article, we’re going to look into the biggest travel trailers that are on the 2020 RV market, that have an Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW, also known as “dry weight”) below 6,000 pounds. We’ll see what their advantages are. The examples examined will show you a broad range of floorplans that appeal to different camping lifestyles.

What makes an rv under 6,000 pounds so great.

Many families in the United States own SUVs that balance maximum seating with fuel efficiency. The SUV is the modern family vehicle. For those that enjoy the RV lifestyle, they buy their SUV to use as their travel trailer’s tow vehicle.

Many of these SUVs have a towing capacity of 7,000- 8,000 pounds . Having a coach under 6,000 pounds UVW gives them enough extra weight to load up the trailer with their belongings without having to buy a larger tow vehicle.

For those that are new to the RV life, these SUV friendly RVs are just as sturdy as any other coach. The development of lightweight building materials allows these products to have durability, but not the weight that comes with it. The engineers that design these units use them with their own families.

The 5 Biggest Travel Trailers Under 6,000 Pounds

The travel trailers we’re going to discuss are at or above 30 feet in length and under 6,000 pounds in dry weight. When you shop around, you’ll find that most lightweight travel trailers range from 25-29 feet . These units push the boundaries to give maximum space for families.

1. Grand Design Imagine 2450RL

  • 29.11 feet long
  • 5,834 pounds Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW)
  • Sleeps up to 4
  • $32,692- $46,085

Grand Design has always been on the top end of the towable market. Their designs are so customer-centric, you’ll find direct links in their designs from consumer feedback through fine details. It can be as small as a shoe rack at the front entrance or as significant as having the largest bathroom in the industry.

The Imagine 2450RL is virtually 30 feet in length. The living area is perfectly designed, so no one has to sit uncomfortably to view the 40-inch TV. This length gives a lot of room in the master bedroom to comfortably walk around the residential queen-size bed.

A 21-foot awning shades the outdoor living space. There is a 1.6 cubic foot refrigerator, propane hookup for a grill, and cable connection for a TV. For those that have to watch your favorite sports game, you have the perfect outdoor gameday setup.

2. Highland Ridge RV Open Range Ultra Lite UT2602RL

  • 31.3 feet long
  • 5,990 pounds UVW
  • Sleeps up to 6
  • $24,970- $31,924

The Open Range Ultra Lite by Highland Ridge gives plenty of space in the living area and master bedroom with its over 31 feet. It allows for a U-shaped dinette and a tri-fold sofa that both transform for additional sleeping space. A trailer this long has room enough for an 8 cubic foot refrigerator as well.

For pet lovers, there’s a built-in pet kennel under the queen-sized bed. A pull out pet dish keeps feeding time clean and easy underneath the microwave. An added convenience is a laundry chute in the master bedroom that goes into the exterior storage bay for easy retrieval.

If your dog has had too much fun in the mud, there’s a sprayer hose that comes connected to the back of the trailer. Cleaning them off is easy with the added docking station where you can connect their leash. Once your pup is towel dry, they can lay next to the LED fireplace that puts off real heat to finish drying.

3. Puma XLE Lite 27RBQC

  • 33 feet long
  • 5,933 pounds UVW
  • Sleeps up to 10
  • $18,588- $32,980

The Puma XLE Lite 27RBQC gives your kids their own private space without having to fold anything up during the day. It has two full-size bunk beds with privacy curtains. Whether they need to cool down or need a time out, they have their space while everyone else has access to the rest of the RV.

This trailer also makes excellent use of the outdoor area with its outdoor kitchen . It comes complete with a mini-fridge, sink, and optional griddle that’ll allow you to make a complete meal. To help you from continuously going in and out, the mini kitchen also has a storage drawer where you can keep cooking utensils and other things.

To feed your family, the coach comes with an extra-large pantry and 11 cubic foot residential refrigerator. The large U-shaped dinette has plenty of space for everyone to dine as a family. There’s also plenty of counter space to get everything prepared.

4. Shasta 29RK

  • 33.11 feet long
  • 33.11 pounds UVW
  • Sleeps up to

At 33.11 feet, The Shasta 29RK is the longest travel trailer under 6,000 pounds we’ve found on the market for 2020. Since 1941, Shasta has been an icon in the RV world. The clean design of their current model appeals too many audiences.

There is plenty of seating in the living room area. The sofa, two reclining chairs, and a large U-shaped dinette allow everyone to sit comfortably. Shasta also sets the mood with their LED lighting and faux fireplace.

If you are entertaining, there’s a lot of space in the kitchen to prepare a meal for everyone. When it’s time to eat, the dinette will accommodate all. Once everyone leaves, the laminate flooring is easy to clean.

5. Coleman Lantern 263BHWE

  • 30.7 feet long
  • 5,971 pounds UVW
  • Sleeps up to 8
  • $19,995- $29,995

The Coleman Lantern 263BHWE is another bunk bed trailer that allows a family-friendly SUV to tow it. At almost 31 feet, it can sleep up to eight people comfortably. Coleman RVs have a good history of being a solid product that is built well.

One feature people enjoy is having the second rear door enter directly into the bathroom. They use this as a mudroom to prevent tracking dirt into the RV. Parents also like having the rotating main TV that changes position from the living room to the bedroom.

Another advantage that parents enjoy is the closed-in walls of the bunks. For smaller children, parents don’t have to worry about them rolling out of bed as walls are on all sides. Children that need to feel secure will enjoy this as well.

travel trailers 6500 lbs or less

The Best 6 Travel Trailers Under 6000 Pounds To Buy

As you move up in weight, you can start upping the size and features you tend to expect with a larger RV. We have scoured the market and came up with our favorite 6 trailers under 6,000 pounds that will keep you in the wilderness longer and give you a great camping experience for years to come. You cannot go wrong with any of these units, each has its positives and negatives and has its designed use. If you want to learn more about the average weight of travel trailers, read our article here . If you further need help, we have a buyers guide here . Lets get started with our favorites!

Winniebago Minnie 2455BHS

The Winnebago 2455BHS is a very popular bunkhouse model. This floorplan is made by several manufacturers, but we think Winnebago does it best.

When you first enter the trailer, to your right is a bedroom with a queen bed with wardrobes and nightstands on either side. There is overhead storage above the bed as well as storage space under the bed. The entertainment center turns around to provide TV to the bedroom when it is nighttime, or when the kids want to be shut in to watch a movie. There are two divider curtains that separate the bedroom from the rest of the unit.

In the main living area, you will find a u shaped dinette located in the slide to provide 44”x 84” of dining space with storage under each cushion. The dinette slides fully out of the way to provide a wide walking area in the trailer.

The kitchen sports an L shaped counter with dual basin sink, three range burner with oven, full size RV refrigerator, as well as a wardrobe opposite from the refrigerator. There is plenty of counter space as well as upper cabinets and lower cabinets and drawers for storage space.

There are two double bunks located in the rear to provide ample sleeping space for 4 kids or adults. Under the bottom bunk is usable storage hidden by cabinet doors. Each bunk also has its own window for light and a breeze from the outside. The bathroom also has a full shower, toilet, and sink vanity with storage. The best part about the shower is the u shaped curtain which extends your shower space and is made of a thicker vinyl/rubber type material that will not get stuck to your body when wet.

Outside the RV, you will find a large 19’ awning which covers the outdoor kitchen with refrigerator, stove, as well as additional sink. All of your cooking could be completed outside to leave the inside clean and untouched.

The RV sits on dual 3,500 pound axles that provide 1,680 pounds of cargo carrying capacity. There are two propane tanks totaling 40 pounds which power the 25,000 BTU furnace as well as the 6 gallon water heater.

Winnebago provides LED lighting throughout as well as night shades to keep your camper dark if you are a late sleeper. One feature we love about our Winnebago is that they use thick plywood flooring so you do not feel like the RV is about to collapse when you are walking around.

Winnebago provides a bluetooth stereo with outdoor speakers and outdoor TV hookups so when you are utilizing your outdoor kitchen, you can enjoy the football game. There is a separate propane quick connect to run another BBQ.

The Minnie units are prewired for solar, come with a battery disconnect, ducted roof air conditioning, power tongue jack, outdoor shower, built in roof ladder, backup camera prep, heated and enclosed underbelly, diamond plate rock guard, built in winterization kit, aluminum rims, and the high gloss fiberglass sides which is my favorite part about the Winnebago lineup.

  • Sleeps up to 8
  • Has many upgrades from the factory
  • Lots of cargo carrying capacity
  • Lots of storage
  • None we can think of

Overall, this travel trailer is very hard to beat when it comes to quality and features. Just the fit and finish on the inside, the feel of the cabinetry with roller bearing slides, and the thoughtful use of all empty space makes this a #1 favorite.

This RV is for the user with multiple people to sleep. This trailer can sleep 8 pretty comfortably, so if you have a few adults and some kids, this unit is guaranteed to fit all of you for a nice trip with ample space to spare. This unit is on our watch list if we do end up having more kids, or if we have to bring our daughters friends around.

The Jayco X213 is another model which differentiates itself well from the marketplace. This model has a KING bed , dinette, bunk beds, and couch all packed into a 21’ model. The secret to fitting all of these items is the king bed slides out the back of the RV.

When you enter the RV, there will be two single bunk beds to your right with a nice storage ward for their gear. These bunk beds are folding and have access to the outside with a large door to store bikes in this area when not in use.

Straight ahead from the entryway door is a full bathroom complete with a tub/shower, toilet, sink, and ample vanity with overhead cabinets.

The kitchen uses both sides of the RV with the sink, three burner stove with oven, microwave, and counter on the entryway side complete with overhead cabinets and lowers, but behind that is the full size RV fridge with pantry. To the rear of the kitchen is the dinette which seats 4 and has storage below the cushions, and directly across from that is the folding jackknife sofa. To the rear of the dinette and sofa is the king bed which slides out the back with overhead cabinets above for storage.

This RV like the one above, could sleep 8. The 8 it sleeps may need to involve some kids on the jackknife sofa and dinette, but the king bed and two single bunks should sleep 4 adults comfortably.

Jayco has installed a 16’ awning which covers most of the rear of the RV to provide shade or shelter from the rain. The trailer rides on dual 2,750 pound weight capacity Dexter EZ Lube axles to provide 1,040 lbs of cargo carrying capacity. To protect the front cap Jayco installed a diamond plate rock guard, and the wheel wells get a galvanized steel housing to provide protection from serious damage in case of a tire blow out.

The Jay Feather models have a nice residential grade kitchen with ball bearing drawer glides with screwed and glued cabinetry, crown molding on the ceiling, LED lighting throughout, and vinyl plank flooring. These models are equipped with Goodyear tires, aluminum rims, two 20 pound propane bottles to power the 6 gallon DSI gas/electric water heater and furnace. There is a Bluetooth stereo with cd/dvd capability, outdoor speakers, power awning with LED lights, outdoor shower, black tank flush, power tongue jack, enclosed underbelly, and roof mounted solar prep kit. Jayco units also have a 2 year warranty which bests most of the competitors 1 year warranties.

  • Bike Storage
  • 2 Year Warranty
  • Lacks wardrobe type hanging storage
  • No Outdoor Kitchen

This trailer is for a couple as well as someone with multiple children. The benefit to this unit is that there are folding bunks to provide good storage for a generator or bikes. The king bed is a huge plus in this unit as well as having a couch and dinette. Many trailers this size don’t include bunks, king bed, couch, and dinette in such a small package.

Airstream International Signature 23FB

The Airstream International Signature 23FB is one of the nicest travel trailers you could ever walk into. When you walk into an Airstream, you will suddenly realize why their price tag is a bit above the rest. They are BEAUTIFUL! And their fit and finish are second to none. The materials, craftsmanship, and design are very well thought out and are the best that can be sourced for a trailer.

In the specific model of the 23FB, this is more of a couples trailer. The unit is designed with one bedroom and a dinette. Four people could sleep comfortabally in this trailer, but it is like a luxary hotel room for two.

When you step in the RV, you will find the bathroom at the rear of the unit taking up the full width. There is a shower, toilet, sink, and countertop large enough for a makeup artist to use. There is lower cabinets as well as a hard door to block sounds. Inside the living area of the trailer, you will find the kitchen directly across from where you walk in, there is a full sink, 3 burner stove, oven, microwave with convection oven option, RV 5 cubic foot fridge, Corian counter tops, stainless steel sink, stereo, Samsung LED TV with surround sound and sub woofer, dinette with under cushion storage, as well as a a closet for clothes storage. Towards the front of the RV there is the bedroom with queen bed, clothes storage, and nightstand. There are 5 windows just in the bedroom alone. That is more than our trailer all put together. This model has 12 windows and skylights throughout the unit to provide lots of natural light.

The 23FB is loaded onto two 3,000 pound axles on torsion axle suspension, and provides 1,329 pounds of cargo carrying capacity. One of the best features of this trailer is that not only does your ducted rooftop a/c provide cooling, but it also has a heat pump so you do not have to waste propane if you are plugged into a campsite. In addition to the heat pump is a 18,000 BTU ducted furnace to also act as a main heat source if you are in very cold climates.

Airstream provides an aluminum superstructure with coated aluminum exterior. There is a one piece white aluminum roof to reduce heat gain from the sun. There is a Sunbrella awning with LED lighting and rear window awnings as well. The trailer has two 30 pound propane tanks with an additional propane quick connect for external BBQ.

The front of the trailer has solar front window protection to prevent breakage due to rocks, as well as a stainless steel front stone guard. There is a locking fresh water inlet, exterior shower, black tank flush, and built in water pressure regulator.

The exterior of the trailer does not lack any features such as actual shock absorbers, electric hitch jack, Goodyear tires, aluminum wheels, prewire rooftop solar (and options for 80 or 160 watt solar systems factory installed) a rear view monitoring system, dedicated waste hose storage, and an enclosed aluminum insulated heated underbelly.

Inside the RV, you will find complete aluminum walls and ceiling, a fantastic fan, probeless tank monitoring system, EcoBatt insulation, tongue and groove wood floor, blackout shades, vinyl flooring, LED dimming lights, electric/gas water heater, as well as a 1,000 pure sine inverter which isn’t found in any other top RV’s we feature here.

The bed and bath will leave you with a wonderful sleep on the pillow top memory foam mattress complete with quilted bedspread, throw pillows, and sleeping pillows. Airstream comes with a 3 year transferable warranty and roadside assistance which beats most other trailer brands.

  • Lightweight for included features
  • Many upgraded features included
  • Lots of hidden storage
  • Best flow out of trailer brands
  • Exterior can dent if hit

This trailer is for a couple looking to travel with the comforts of a 5 star hotel room. This trailer does not spare any comfort of home and can satisfy your every need. Airstreams have been around for many years and are the only brand people buy used to fix up or renovate. That tells you something about their quality.

Livin Lite CampLite CL23RLS

Livin Lite takes a page out of the book from Airstream with its use of aluminum for many of its parts. Aluminum is rust resistant and lightweight. The Livin Lite Camplite CL23RLS is very light for the features and size it has weighing in at only 4,130 pounds. This is due to using aluminum for the frame instead of heavier steel. This unit rides on dual 2,800 pound axles to provide 1,492 pounds of cargo carrying capacity.

When you first step into this model, you will see the bed off to your right with overhead cabinets, dual closets, and nightstands. There are windows on either side to provide adequate cross airflow to keep you cool at night. Across from the door, you will find the bathroom with shower and toilet. There is no sink in this unit in order to provide more living space. There is a nice storage unit with shelf and coat hooks right next to the door as you walk in to act as a drop off point for all of your stuff. The whole rear of the RV is the living area with 56” sofa, huge 74″ x 40” dinette in the slide out, large counter top space adjacent to the kitchen sink, dual burner stove, and large 6 cubic foot refrigerator.

Outside the RV you will find a nice pass through storage as well as an outdoor kitchen complete with a refrigerator and dual burner stove.

Camplite adds dual pane windows with built in night shades and screens to provide good insulation from the elements. The flooring is residential freeze/ crack proof linoleum, cabinets are framed out of aluminum, solid surface counters provide good sturdy countertops. There is a stereo system complete with 2 flush mount speakers, charging center with USB ports, high efficiency LED lighting, and a stainless steel sink. In place of an oven, this unit comes with a convection oven microwave. Additionally there is a 6 gallon gas / electric DSI water heater, Vortex 12V fans, all aluminum shower surround, residential mattress, and overhead cabinets and shirt closets.

Construction is made from an aluminum superstructure with composite material throughout. There is a laminated floor with R9 insulation and bonded fiberglass walls. Other standard features are a power tongue jack, slide out topper awning, 16’ awning, aluminum rims, prewired for solar, 2 exterior speakers, exterior shower, diamond plate skirting, and radius baggage doors with slam latches. Options can include a heated and enclosed underbelly, Fantastic fan, off road package, larger 30# propane tanks, battery disconnect, and gel coat fiberglass sides.

  • Lightweight for size
  • Modern look inside
  • Enclosed underbelly an option
  • No bedroom privacy

This trailer is for the camper who wants a lightweight unit without sacrificing comfort and fit and finish. This provides about half of the trailer for entertaining space and has a separate bed area towards the front. The aluminum structure is a huge bonus to this RV to make it lightweight and long lasting. This unit is capable of sleeping 6, but is also a perfect unit for a couple taking a trip around the US.

Aspen Trail 25BH

The Aspen Trail 25BH provides many amenities within the trailer you will not find in like sized trailers that are under 4,588 pounds which this trailer is. How Aspen Trail succeeds with this is by removing the slide to save weight. Slides can add 800+ pounds in weight due to their extra components within the trailer.

Upon walking into this trailer, you are greeted to the right with a door into the bedroom which has a queen bed. The bed is full walk around so the bedroom does not lack in size. There are wards and nightstands adjacent to both sides of the bed with ample storage in the overhead cabinets above the bed.

In the main living area, you have a sofa, dinette, and two double bunk beds. The kitchen has a large 6 cubic foot RV refrigerator, microwave, oven, triple burner stove, and dual basin sink. There is a bit less counter space in this model than others, so be prepared to use the dinette for food prep. There is a large bathroom with full shower, toilet, and sink vanity with storage.

The 25BH rides on two 3,800 pound axles to provide a huge 3,012 pound cargo carrying capacity . The awning is a bit short for such a long RV at 14’, but for more of a budget RV, is perfectly adequate.

The 25BH comes with an 18,000 BTU furnace with auto ignition, 6 gallon gas water heater, dual 20# propane tanks, backup camera with solar prep, water heater bypass with winterization kit, LED interior lighting, stereo with two interior and two exterior speakers, 60” x 80” queen bed, front diamond plate protection, residential flooring, and a power awning with LED lighting.

  • Will fit the needs of weekend warrior campers
  • Sleeps 8-10 comfortably
  • Corrugated Metal Siding
  • Build quality not as nice as the others recommended
  • No enclosed or heated underbelly

If you have a large family, or some in laws, this trailer is perfect for you. One party can have the bedroom, and the other can have the living area with the kids. If you need to bring many people on your camping trip, this unit can sleep a lot. There will be some jockeying around with the dinette and jackknife sofa, but you can do it. If you need to sleep 6, you can do so without moving any of the furniture around. This trailer is great for the weekend warrior, but may not be the best in colder weather due to no enclosed underbelly and underbelly heat.

Outdoors RV 21RBS

The Outdoors RV 21RBS lives up to its name as is a RV for the true boondocker or outdoorsman. The fit and finish on items with Outdoors RV are second to none and quality can even be seen through the pass through storage. These units are built tough and are designed to last.

Upon entering the rear entryway, you will find a large closet with pantry. Across the entry door is a corner bathroom with shower, toilet, sink and skylight. There is a 51″ x 84” dinette which is one of the largest on our list which doubles as a bed. Towards the front of the RV is a 60” x 80” queen bed with nightstands and closets on each side. Above the bed is overhead storage. In the middle of the RV you will find its kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, fridge, and dual basin sink.

This trailer rides on dual 4,000 pound axles and sports a maximum cargo carrying capacity of 1,755 pounds. Interior height is higher at 6’11″ over other trailers at 6’5”.

Where this unit truly shines is in its capacities, the 21RBS has a 78 gallon fresh water tank along with a 40 gallon grey and 40 gallon black tank. These sizes are over double of what some other manufacturers offer.

These units are truly designed for 4 seasons with the thermal pane windows, cold weather kit on the Norcold refrigerator, triple layered roof insulation, 1” thick insulated luggage doors, thermal insulated skylights and bathroom vents, large furnace, and heated and insulated holding tanks. The walls are framed with aluminum and the trailer has a aluminum frame including roof. The rest of the unit is layered fiberglass. The chassis is higher to provide off road capability with gas shock absorbers and rugged Goodyear 10 ply tires. There is diamond plating to protect the front from rock chips and rubber diamond plate luggage compartment flooring.

This RV is meant for off grid camping with the large freshwater tank, battery disconnect, LED lighting throughout, solar ready roof port for up to 510 watts along with the 200 watts solar ready port on the side. There is an external propane port for BBQ and 2 30 pound propane tanks.

The interior is not lacking features with the LG solid surface counter tops, sunken range with glass front, knife rack, under mount kitchen sink, 100 lb metal drawer glides, vaulted radius ceilings, hardwood cabinets, 12v charging station, and HDMI Bluetooth DVD sound system.

The bedroom comes with a premium mattress, night shades, and night stands. With the upgraded package you could expect features such as a wireless rear camera, rear back up lights, power stabilizer jacks with remote control, slide topper awnings, etc…

  • Built for rugged environments
  • Large tank capacities
  • Lots of standard features
  • Fair cost for what you get
  • Can be a bit heavy than other units of comparable size

This trailer is for the avid outdoorsman or boondocker. With the solar ready capabilities and large holding tanks, you don’t have to worry about moving your trailer for power or dumping your tanks very often. This would be the perfect vehicle to tow cross country through the back country due to its off road capabilities as well as tour from KOA to KOA.

*CCC is Cargo Carrying Capacity

Each of the 6 travel trailers have their benefits on what they are good for. You can go from the 5 star hotel of the Airstream , to the rugged life of the Outdoors RV, to the King bed in the Jayco and be happy. No matter which one on this list you pick, they will all perform very well and are good trailers for what they are designed for. The most important thing to remember when choosing an RV or looking for a new unit is to keep in mind what you will really be using it for and that your family will make many awesome memories in it. The 6 Best Travel Trailers Under 6000 lbs.

Before investing in a costly travel trailer, it is highly recommended to pay attention to the “use-case scenario”, which helps you point out the main expectations you have for the vehicle. Are you a routine hiker who likes to traverse to high elevation areas during the weekend? Do you prefer to spend some time with the family members into the woods during the holiday season? No matter what the case, you should ask yourself these questions to make an informed decision.

With an exceptionally wide variety of options in the market, it can sometimes be very difficult for a novice adventurer to choose a model that suits their needs and uses. You might still have the curiosity to discover numerous floor plans and exterior designs of latest models that would catch the attention of everyone present in the campsite at the moment. Lightweight travel trailers are not only easy to be dragged away by a pickup on the highway, but they also offer better fuel economy as they put less resistance on the engine power of the vehicle. There might be some drawbacks in these campers, because the manufacturers don’t have the liberty of using heavy-duty and strong material to construct the body of the trailer.

Now that you have decided to purchase a travel trailer that weighs less than 6,000 pounds, you should check out the options mentioned below.

Top 6 Travel Trailers Under 6000 lbs.

1. crossroad rv zinger lite zr18ds.

Crossroad RV Zinger Lite ZR18DS

From glamorous U-shaped dinette to spacious interior rooms, this RV would enhance the traveling experience of your loved ones and guests. Whether you own an SUV or a minivan, the lightweight body of this camper can be easily dragged to far remote places without any difficulty with increased road friction – which can potentially be devastating for the engine of the pickup. The power retractable awning can come in handy for your adventure group when you suddenly experience rainfall or you instantly plan to grill some chicken under the shade.

Its large shelves can give you the option to place your favorite books and novels, so that you can feel just like home even though you might be hundreds of miles away from it. With its wood grain linoleum, not only would you be able to pull off an aesthetically appealing flooring option but it would also be a barrier to potential moisture and humidity – which can potentially affect the structure after being exposed to it for some time.

2. Livin-Lite Camplite Travel Trailer

Its elegant upholstery and bright LED lighting fixtures are enough to easily give off exquisite vibes, and you can easily impress your guests and visitors as soon as they step inside this camper. From crystal white to silver frost color options , you can choose from a wide variety of exterior paint job that suits your personal preference.

Its spacious interior area gives you the liberty of including more items during your hunting trip or birding session.

4. Lance Ultra-Light Travel Trailer

travel trailers 6500 lbs or less

Its all-season certified camping ability gives you the leverage of driving it off under rough weather conditions without fearing about tough terrain conditions. The towable nature of this camper is also a great advantage for adventurers who own minivans with low engine power. The legendary quality of its stocky built increases the safety aspects of the passengers, as the outer layer can easily withstand the typical deteriorating effects of wear and tear. The ducted heating system in the bathroom can make it highly comfortable for you when you plan to take shower during the chilly winter nights. The skylight above the dinette area can make your interior living space highly fancy, and at the same time you would get to enjoy warm sunlight during the cold days of winter season.

5. Dutchmen Aspen Trail Travel Trailer

travel trailers 6500 lbs or less

It provides the most dynamic type of floor plans to the clients, and you would be able to find a camper that fits your lifestyle and needs related to adventure. The 82″ interior height is a great feature as it provides more head space and it doesn’t restrict the owners to place upholstery and furniture items with considerably large dimensions.

The dual entry doors provide you the freedom of staying outside late for stargazing and related purposes without worrying about disturbing other occupants when you slip in at night. The outdoor kitchen facility is another option that keeps you integrated with the beautiful scenes of the landscape around you.

Final Learning Regarding RV Weights and Towing

Frequently, websites may list RV weights without specifying the type of weight or just use the term “dry weight” (UVW). However, keep in mind that you must take into account all weights and loads, including persons, when towing a camper with your truck. Therefore, in my experience, the Gross Weight (GVWR) is the only weight that matters when determining whether you can or cannot tow the RV. In general, I don’t place a lot of emphasis on dry weight since I want my RV to be fully loaded. Therefore, from my perspective, the gross weight is a crucial weight that I will take into account to determine if I will be able to pull the travel trailer or not.

The camper’s Dry Weight (sometimes referred to as the UVW or shipped weight) and Load Capacity Weight are added to get the Gross Weight Rating (GVWR), often referred to as the total weight or “GVWR” weight. Before selecting to buy and tow an RV, always refer to the owner’s manuals of the relevant vehicles and equipment. Additionally, be completely aware of your vehicle’s towing capability given the setup you are utilizing. Depending on the load, vehicle layout, passenger count, and extras, the towing capability will change. Before you start driving, verify the towing capacity of your vehicle and, if required, get expert assistance. This is for both your and others’ safety.

Updated April 5, 2024

Finding the right travel trailer can be difficult, so here are the 7 best travel trailers under 7,000 lbs. Travel trailers that weigh less than 7,000 lbs are popular because they are large enough to sleep a larger family while light enough to tow with mid-size pickup trucks and larger SUVs.

In this article, we share our top picks for travel trailers that weigh less than 7,000 lbs for 2024.

Advantages of Travel Trailers Under 7000 LBS

One of the first things that will affect your decision is the size of the trailer you are interested in. Depending on your situation and how many people you want to travel with, there are benefits to both small and large trailers. However, many people prefer large travel trailers for various reasons.

Large travel trailers are great for large families and for traveling with a large group of friends. They have lots of sleeping spaces and living spaces. Additionally, they provide all the storage you need so that you can pack for everything you might want to do on your trip.

You will also enjoy having a larger kitchen area to cook meals you would normally make at home.

When you leave for an extended camping trip, you might not think you want any comforts from home. However, if you are gone for a month, you will quickly appreciate having extra counter space to make something that is not premade.

That is a luxury only available in large travel trailers. As a result, purchasing a large travel trailer is worth it to many people.

Can You Tow A 7000 lb Travel Trailer With An SUV?

Yes! There are a number of SUVs on the market that are perfect for pulling a 7,000-pound travel trailer. Generally speaking, you will want to look for larger SUVs to pull a 7,000-pound travel trailer.

These larger SUVs are typically designed on chassis similar to that of full-size pickup trucks. This means that they can handle the added weight on their frame and axles. They also tend to have larger engines and more robust transmissions.

Popular examples of SUVs that can pull 7,000 pounds of travel trailer include the Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, and Toyota Sequoia. If you are looking for luxury brands that can tow a 7,000-pound travel trailer, consider the Lexus LX, Land Rover Defender, Porsche Cayenne, or the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

What Size Travel Trailer Is Best For A Family Of 4?

Most families do well in a travel trailer that is 20 to 36 feet in length. This size allows for a bit of space to spread out and is large enough to accommodate sleeping space for four people.

That said, you need to consider your family and how much time you will be spending in your travel trailer when you are looking for a good option.

For instance, if you are going to be a full-time RV family, you may want to look at travel trailers on the longer end of that spectrum. This will allow everyone some private space, and you may be able to customize the space for work, school, and fun with minimal difficulty.

On the flip side, if you like to hit the road on the weekend, are really active, and really just need a travel trailer for sleeping, showering, and cooking, a smaller travel trailer may work perfectly for your family.

Remember, you also need to consider the capacity of your tow vehicle. If you are not ready to invest in a new vehicle along with your travel trailer, look for options that also coordinate with your vehicle.

1 thought on “7 Best Travel Trailers Under 7000 LBS for 2024”

These trailers are nice but where are you suppose to put your clothes? For the last 11 years we were snowbirds. We never had enough closet space. Those little closets beside the bed would only hold 4 shirts.

So come on companies we need more closet space and more counter space. It drives me crazy trying to keep things put away.

10 Awesome Travel Trailers Under 6,000 lbs

  • July 25, 2023
  • 5th Wheels/Travel Trailers

If you're looking for great camper trailers that are lightweight, this is the post for you - focusing specifically on travel trailers under 6000lbs. Travel trailers come in all different shapes and sizes. But the lighter options have seen a recent popularity increase thanks to a few key benefits.

The most important advantage to lightweight trailers is that they can be safely towed with a truck such as the Ford F-150 or even with a large SUV like a Chevy Tahoe .  Read more about which SUV's are best for towing a travel trailer. In fact, even some passenger cars could even get the job done depending on their towing ability.

Towing a lighter travel trailer would also make driving much easier. It removes the stress of worrying about a heavier trailer swaying back and forth behind you. This feature makes navigating both highways and backroads more manageable. However, please remember that trailer sway can happen even with a lightweight trailer under some conditions. A lot depends on your overall towing capacity, how you drive and road conditions. Read here more about trailer sway and how to prevent it .

The lighter load offers better fuel economy as well. In other words, these trailers will be more cost-effective than larger options due to their lighter weight. It’s another area where the lighter designs seem to outpace their heavier rivals.

These trailers do fall behind in some areas, though. It’s not uncommon for a company to cut corners when pushing towards a lower dry weight limit. This issue results in a poorly designed trailer due to use of less than stellar materials.

But we have a list of 10 lightweight travel trailers that avoid this issue. So, keep reading and check out what makes these models such awesome options.

10  Travel Trailers Under 6,000 LBS

Here are 10 top-tier travel trailers that have a dry weight under 6,000 pounds. The images used in this section are screenshots from the official websites. You can explore these sites by pressing on the links provided below.

1. Crossroad RV Zinger Lite ZR18DS

Crossroad RV did a great job making this 22-foot 6-inch trailer into an RV owner's dream. For instance, this travel trailer comes with a queen mattress that fits perfectly into the bedroom. It's the perfect place to wind down after a long day traveling.

The fully functional kitchen is another nice touch. It's filled with useful features such as a stove, oven, microwave, and sink. You'd think all these features would make it seems cramped inside, but the 6-foot 6-inch ceiling fixes the issue. And this rig's a convenient tow option thanks to its dry weight of 4,360 pounds.

Find out more about the Crossroad RV Zinger Lite ZR18DS here.

2. Forest River Wolf Pup 15SW

This 18-foot 11-inch travel trailer might seem small based on its measurements. But Forest River made sure to fill every inch of this rig with top tier features. These aspects include a sleeper sofa, queen mattress, complete kitchen, LCD TV mount, and full bathroom.

This rig's dry weight of 3276 pounds is another advantage. I'd imagine the total weight would barely break 5,000 pounds with the trailer being fully loaded. This quality makes it the easiest tow on our entire list.

3. Forest River Flagstaff Super Lite  23FBDS

Forest River's Flagstaff Super Lite 23FDBS has a higher dry weight than the previous rigs at 5654 pounds. But this figure's still considered towable by a large number of vehicles such as SUVs, jeeps, and pick up trucks.

The source of this higher poundage is its longer length at 25 feet. This extra length makes it possible to fit the U dinette and various storage areas. And it still has space for a full kitchen, complete bathroom, and Murphy Bed.

It's the perfect travel trailer for guests as well. This rig has enough room for five or six people to sleep comfortably. A queen-sized bed is also available to anyone who'd want a bit more room when they sleep. Plus, it still has a dry weight of only 5,497 pounds, even with these features.

5. Jayco Jay Feather 24BHM

Jayco's Jay Feather 24BHM has enough space for three different beds: one Murphy Bed and a set of bunk beds. This aspect provides plenty of places for people to sleep. The inclusion of the sleeper sofa is another item worth having. It'll make sure you have somewhere else to relax other than a bed.

This rig's dry weight is rather solid, too, at a lowly 5465 pounds. You shouldn't overlook the awning either as it'll give nice shade coverage. Its other features include a U dinette, full kitchen, and complete bathroom.

6. Keystone RV Company Passport 240BH SL Series

Keystone's 27-foot 4-inch travel trailer offers plenty of comforts for full-time RVers: a double bunk bed, queen mattress, updated kitchen, complete bathroom, and a U dinette. It even comes with a LED flat-screen HDTV to entertain you when RV life gets a little boring.

This rig seems to have every feature an RV owner could want onboard a trailer. The 4911-pound dry weight isn't too shabby as it should be towable by an SUV. Some passenger cars might even be capable of towing it depending on the type.

7. Lance 2295 Travel Trailer

Lance's 2295 Travel Trailer provides an RVer with a lot of room with its 27-foot long design. This room is filled with cozy atmosphere thanks to the fireplace placed in the living area. The 32-inch LCD LED HDTV right above it adds onto this sense of relaxation.

Another appealing feature is the dinette with pull out storage drawers. These storage drawers could store trinkets from your travels. The kitchen area's also worth mentioning as it has enough counter space for preparing actual meals.

8. Winnebago Micro Minnie 1800BH

The 21-foot Winnebago's Micro Minnie 1800BH is a bit smaller than most rigs on this list. But this smaller area doesn't mean it lacks features. In fact, Winnebago somehow managed to fit all the essential items without making the rig feel stuffy.

After all, it has a stainless steel sink, dinette, bunk beds, queen mattress, oven, microwave, and many other amenities. I think it's fair to say that this travel trailer uses its space better than most rigs on our list. Its dry weight of 3,660 pounds makes it more towable than many of them as well.

9. Coachmen Freedom Express Pilot  20BHS

Coachmen's Freedom Express Pilot 20BHS is a compact rig explicitly made for smaller tow vehicles. This mindset reflects itself in the trailer's low dry weight of 3,883 pounds and 22-foot length. But it still has a lot of the same features that these other rigs possess: sleeper sofa, queen mattress, full kitchen, bunk beds, etc.

Aside from these features, it has a 12-inch awning to help shield you during sunny days. The pass-through storage is another exciting addition. It'll give you an extra area to store all the possessions picked up during your travels.

10.Coleman Lantern LT 262BH

Our last rig happens to be the largest on this list at 30 feet 7 inches long. Coleman puts the extra space to good use by adding useful items such as a dinette and entertainment center. There's also enough room to add in a sofa without meddling too much with the walking area.

It ensures you can still move around without continually hitting into something. And the extra room didn't effective the dry weight, 5,833 pounds, enough to make much of a difference. The vehicle in your driveway should be capable of towing it from place to place.

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are a blessing for those who don’t need the space. Maybe you lack a 1/2-ton or 3/4-ton truck and don’t need or want to drop the extra money on a much larger RV. They’re surprisingly versatile and the interior innovations towards creating more living space are incredible.

Lightweight travel trailers towable by the family vehicle are growing in popularity. Especially those with innovative solutions—such as slideouts and Murphy beds—to the space equation. A wet bath may take a little getting used to, but it’s more than understandable when compacting living space.

They’re also affordable and a more sensible option for travel trailer tent add-ons when you really want to expand those rest and relaxation spaces. With that being said, we’ve compiled some fantastic travel trailers under 3,500 lbs for your perusing pleasure.

All of these incredible options have some very attractive qualities and a few drawbacks, too – we tell it like it is.

Susan and Mike from RVBlogger have toured and reviewed dozens of travel trailers that weigh less than 3,00 lbs. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the info we share in this article!

1. Airstream Basecamp 16

Airstream Basecamp 16 Exterior. A great option in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

Our Pros and Cons

✅ 6’4″ height is a nice amenity for a 16′ travel trailer

⛔ The Basecamp design is more for off-road, boondocking experiences

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW : 2,650 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 850 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

T he Airstream Basecamp 16 is an impressive little beast. It’s small, compact, yet roomy and made for adventuring into areas well off the beaten path. Despite its seemingly singular nature, it still retains the prototypical Airstream experience.

It’s the perfect option for couples since it only sleeps two, but you’ll never feel constrained within its aluminum environment. One of the best features of the Basecamp is the most obvious one—the panoramic front window. The view is what it’s all about and it’s why the Basecamp is the perfect adventure design.

The convertible dinette folds completely away for additional living space or it converts into a half bed, two single beds, or a full. The wet bath makes sense with the small design but it still feels more spacious than most.

You also have a choice between the 16 and 16X models, which mostly boil down to cosmetics, a few extra amenities, and living space.

2. Casita Spirit 17 Deluxe

Casita Spirit 17 Deluxe Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Deluxe model includes a bathroom and shower

⛔ The Deluxe model only sleeps 2, whereas the standard sleeps up to 6

  • Length: 17′
  • UVW : 2,480 lbs
  • CCC: 1,020 lbs

The Casita brand is a truly unique design, with nothing more than a 2-piece, marine-grade fiberglass body fused together into the travel trailer you see in the pic above. Though the design process is simple, it’s a beast of a camper, capable of extreme longevity with the proper maintenance.

As you would expect in a camper of this size, the sleeping area converts into a dinette, saving you some much-needed space. Regardless of the Casita model you choose, all of them come with microwaves, a two-burner stove, a power range hood with a light, and a silverware drawer.

Everything else that goes into the Casita Spirit is entirely up to you. It’s also a very lightweight trailer with a very large cargo-carrying capacity of half a ton. You can pack a lot into this animal and still have plenty of room to spare.

3. KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH

KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH one of the best travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Excellent design for five campers in a tiny bunkhouse

⛔ Five people can push into that 810 lb CCC spread pretty quickly

  • Length: 21′ 5″
  • UVW : 2,690 lbs
  • CCC: 810 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 280 lbs

The KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH is a return to the more traditional exterior aesthetic on modern-day travel trailers. It’s small but it does a lot with the space, including a bunkhouse for when you want to bring the kids along for the ride.

It also features ample storage space, with passthrough storage included. The teddy bear mattresses on the bunks are more comfortable than some bunkhouses in more expensive and roomier RVs. With RVs this size, you don’t see full baths very often, which makes this KZ an even better choice for small families.

The exterior features a 9′ awning if you want to avoid the sun on a lazy afternoon. The easy-tow design, ample space, and plentiful amenities make this one of the more attractive options on the list.

The KZ 180BH is also a very affordable option, as low as $15k at some dealerships, which is hard to beat in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs.

4. Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW

Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW Exterior

✅ Rear door entrance makes for a more spacious design

⛔ Not everyone is enamored with split baths

  • Length: 19′
  • UVW : 3,314 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,475 lbs
  • CCC: 2,161 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 375 lbs

‘Wolf Pup’ is an apt name for this tiny tike of a travel trailer. The Wolf Pup design features a rear-door entrance, which is a welcome departure from other travel trailers in its class. The split design allows for more up and down room along the length of the travel trailer.

Not everyone loves the split bath design but it makes perfect sense when it boils down to space-saving design features. Overall, the Wolf Pup 14CCw looks like a much larger RV shrunk down to a smaller size.

Just about everything you expect in a 30′ travel trailer seems to be in place here, with the exception of modest and understandable cuts to save space.

The exterior features a 10′ awning, with an exterior TV mount so you can take the whole family outside for a cookout and a movie. You also have some outside storage options and this runs into the best feature in the 14CCW—a full ton of cargo carrying capacity.

That’s right—you get a full ton plus 100 pounds for good measure. Prepare to load up for your next outing because the Wolf Pup can definitely handle it.

5. Vintage Cruiser 19TWD

Vintage Cruiser 19TWD Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Bedroom reading lights for some old-school reading in a retro RV

⛔ Vintage styles are popular but the aesthetic isn’t for everyone

  • Length: 23′
  • UVW : 3,035 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,380 lbs
  • CCC: 1,345 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

It’s hard not to love the growing popularity of retro-style RVs of which the Gulf Stream Vintage line is more than aware. The 19TWD is an excellent variation and features twin beds with a king insert on one end for a variety of sleeping arrangements.

If you love the look of old-school, roadside diners, that’s the vibe the Vintage Cruiser is rocking. The interior features a split bath with a surprisingly long bathtub on one side and the toilet/sink on the other. The vintage booth seating is perfect, considering the surroundings and it includes an extra counter as well.

The exterior, vintage graphics aside, the Cruiser features a welded aluminum frame with vacuum-bonded sidewalls. This maintains the lightweight while allowing for a spacious design. It features well over half a ton of cargo carrying capacity along with pass-through storage and plenty of storage options within.

It’s the perfect option for a small family of three or four.

6. Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ

Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ Exterior one of the most spacious travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Huge, full bathroom in the rear

⛔ Windows are a little lacking

  • Length: 20′ 5″
  • UVW : 2,910 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,850 lbs
  • CCC: 940 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 330 lbs

The Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ is a brilliant little travel trailer that manages to squeeze in a full bathroom in the rear of the RV. The Clipper also includes a queen bed on the opposite end with plenty of room in between.

There’s also nearly a ton in cargo carrying capacity, with plenty of room and storage options to pack for a big trip. The exterior features a 12′ awning for afternoons in front of the grill and pass-through storage so you can chew up some of that extensive CCC.

Thanks to its lightweight, the Clipper is already an advantage on the road. However, it also features an aerodynamic front that helps cut down on the wind resistance and the number of times you have to hit up the gas station each trip.

While the Clipper won’t blow your socks off in terms of new innovations, it’s a fantastic option for a very small family or a couple. It also boasts one of the more spacious interiors on this list.

7. Scamp 16’ Deluxe

Scamp 16’ Deluxe Exterior

✅ One of the most durable and long-lasting travel trailers on the market

⛔ Interiors need some decorating attention (on the bland side)

  • Length: 16′
  • UVW : 2,600
  • GVWR: 3,300 lbs
  • CCC: 700 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 225 lbs

There’s a reason that Scamp trailers manufactured back in the 1970s are still on the road today. Scamp manufactures one heck of a travel trailer and it’s built to last. The 16′ Deluxe version travels in the same circles as the Casita Spirit.

While the specs above are fixed, the reality is far different. There are so many customization options with the Scamp that nearly all of the above numbers are malleable.

If you’re looking for long-term travel and prefer to boondock, the Deluxe version is for you, since it features a wet bath. However, like the Casita, the addition of a bath cuts down on the available sleeping space, transforming the Scamp 16′ into a two-person show.

While the interior aesthetics are nothing to write home about, the solid fiberglass shell will last until the end of the earth and there’s always plenty of potential for personalization.

All Scamps feature a rear dining area that converts into a nice bed. The 16′ version also packs in the full kitchen setup, microwave, extra outlets, gravel shield exterior, and a group 24 battery pack.

8. Safari Condo R1713

Safari Condo R1713 Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Features a retractable roof (how cool is that?)

⛔ It’s essentially a spruced-up teardrop, so space is fairly constrained , especially with 4

  • Length: 17′ 3″
  • UVW : 1,825 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,700 lbs
  • CCC: 875 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

It’s hard not to look at this UFO-like teardrop and not be impressed. It seems like it was either made for space or it came from there. As far as travel trailers under 3,500 lbs go, the R1713 is a technological powerhouse, full of boondocking and off-grid goodies.

It even features a retractable roof. There are several other models with retractable roofs as well if it’s worth it for you to look at some larger sizes. Whether or not that opens the door to some interesting roof-tent options is up to you and your own innovative personality.

These campers are designed for going off the grid and staying that way for as long as possible. It comes with enough battery power for 200 amp hours of reserve capacity along with another two, 200-watt solar panels to keep the juice flowing.

It also features a heat pump A/C and a 2,000-watt inverter. The R1713 features two electric motors that essentially drive the travel trailer around via remote control. So, once you unhitch it, you can maneuver it any way you like.

It also features an outstanding build quality and it’s clear that these travel trailers are designed as the end-all-be-all of long-term, off-grid-possible teardrops.

9. Forest River R-Pod RP171

Forest River R-Pod RP171 Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Self-adjusting electric brakes

⛔ A/C units are optional on all R-Pods—not standard

  • UVW : 2,714 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,840 lbs
  • CCC: 1,126 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 340 lbs

Forest River R-Pods are unique-looking travel trailers and the RP171 is no exception. It’s kind of like someone took the concept of a teardrop and mashed it up with a much larger travel trailer that’s shaped like a marshmallow.

The end result is an intriguing aesthetic that works. One of the best things about R-Pods is the things that come standard, such as nitrogen radial tires, fiberglass roofs, aluminum wheels, and dual-battery racks.

For the RP171 in particular, that opens the doors for a wide range of options. If you’re considering the off-grid lifestyle or prefer boondocking this trailer is perfect. The exterior lights are incredibly bright LEDs, which cuts down on power consumption. The exterior also features sidewalls with an R9 insulation factor.

The RP171 has a spacious interior, with a queen bed on one end and a sizeable dinette on the other. Everything in the middle is pretty standard fare for travel trailers these days, even when they’re this small.

The RP171 was one of the first R-Pods in Forest River’s lineup of small, ultra-light trailers and they’ve had ample time to perfect it.

10. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX Exterior

✅ Queen bed with walk-around room and flanking shirt closets

⛔ Two-burner cooktop is awfully small considering the counter space

  • Length: 21′ 6″
  • UVW : 3,124 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,880 lbs
  • CCC: 756 lbs

The Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX is a fantastic little travel trailer that’s ready to rock n roll at a moment’s notice. The queen bed with ample space surrounding it is especially notable. You can tell that Palomino was able to really work some extra living space into a relatively small RV.

This is the second travel trailer on the list with a full, rear bathroom that feels far more spacious than it really is. The shower features a bright, LED overhead light which is especially nice. After all, it’s hard to find fantastic lighting in a lot of RV showers.

The booth dinette is a nice touch as well, with plenty of table and counter space to go around. Another small but nice touch is the number of charging ports throughout the RV. In the age of the smartphone and tablet, there can never be enough of those it seems.

The Alpha Superflex Roof is highly durable and the 16QBX also features a Darco underbelly for protection over the road. If you’re itching to get away from it all, the 16QBX is prepped for solar power, along with a WiFi setup.

11. Jayco Jay Flight 184BS

Jayco Jay Flight 184BS Exterior a reliable option for travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Features a Jay S.M.A.R.T lighting system

⛔ A toilet and shower with no sink may turn off some potential customers

  • Length: 20′ 8″
  • UVW : 3,460 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,040 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 395 lbs

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are nice and all but not all of them can claim a Jay S.M.A.R.T. lighting system. This lighting system is a fantastic innovation for safe traveling. A combination of signal indicators, running lights, taillights, and reverse lights all work in conjunction to create better lighting indicators on the road.

As far as the Jayco Jay Flight 184BS is concerned, we have another great, ultra-lightweight travel trailer option that actually sleeps up to 6 people. Not only do you have plenty of room for a small to mid-size family, but you also have better protection and safety for them on the road.

This travel trailer also features a slide-out, which is incredibly popular in this class of travel trailers. The slide-out holds the dinette, which makes for more living space even while the family gathers for dinner.

The rear tub and toilet sit right next to the bunkbeds for those overnight potty breaks. The overall interior space is also one of the largest on this list.

12. inTech Sol Eclipse

inTech Sol Eclipse Exterior a twist on travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Build quality is exceptional

⛔ The customization is so extensive it can be a little overwhelming

  • UVW : 2,775 lbs
  • CCC: 725 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 445 lbs

Though this is one of the smaller travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, it’s much like the Safari Condo R1713, a technological powerhouse packed into a tiny space. The inTech Sol Eclipse is all about customization options and you are free to communicate with them throughout the entire manufacturing process.

One of the things that sets inTech apart from its rivals is build quality. Each travel trailer is manufactured around a fully welded aluminum framework.

This helps inTech build components and customization options without placing extra strain on the frame. It also features a single-piece roof with R7 bubble-foil insulation.

The entire kitchen is in the front with a large, forward-facing window and two side windows for a panoramic viewing experience. Also, like the Safari Condo, the Sol Eclipse is designed with going off the grid in mind.

The plug-and-play nature of the design opens the door to a wealth of off-grid opportunities in terms of add-ons. If you prefer the road less traveled, this small travel trailer is perfect for you.

13. Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH

Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH Exterior

✅ Side A/C rather than a roof A/C makes it more aerodynamically sound

⛔ Black tank is only 5 gallons

  • Length: 16′ 6″
  • UVW : 1,748 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,500 lbs
  • CCC: 752 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 184 lbs

There’s a lot to love about the Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH. For one, it’s hard to imagine a travel trailer this small with a bunkhouse, yet here we are. It features a rear sofa bed with a simple, drop-down overhead bunk. Easy-peasy.

This is also an incredibly light model, considering its interior size. It doesn’t seem real, however, the floor is manufactured in a honeycomb composite material, while the RV is insulated in block foam and the fiberglass roof is a single piece.

Thanks to the small size, the air conditioner is placed as a window unit. This helps in the aerodynamics department, saving you some gas money that will add up over the years. Out of all the travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, this one is the lightest while retaining so much space to move around in.

14. Airstream Bambi

Airstream Bambi Exterior one of the classic travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ There are four floorplan options and all of them come with memory foam beds

⛔ Cargo carrying capacity is on the low end

  • Length: 16′ 1″
  • UVW : 3,000 lbs
  • CCC: 500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 430 lbs

Airstream makes the list twice on this one, thanks to having two different ultra-lightweight travel trailer models. Neither has much to do with the other. Where the Basecamp is more for going off-grid, the Bambi is more of a traditional camper’s camper.

The Bambi comes in four models, all of which feature the iconic exterior with a bright interior aesthetic as well. The classic design is simple but elegant. If you love the white-colors aesthetic for a more sunshiny lifestyle, the Bambi will appeal to you all day long.

The living space feels spacious while the appliances are small and out of the way. Airstream Bambi features 12vdc compressor refrigerators and the wet bath is tight but exactly what you would expect on a 16′ travel trailer.

15. Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK

Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Gotta love the Murphy Bed!

⛔ Very limited counter space

  • Length: 19′ 1″
  • UVW : 3,080 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,800 lbs
  • CCC: 720 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 360 lbs

Last but not least on our list of travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, we arrive at the Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK . This one features a Murphy bed as an option and it makes a world of a difference inside an ultra-lightweight travel trailer.

This is one of the more roomy and spacious RVs on the list but it takes a little sacrifice in terms of counter space to get there. However, most potential buyers will recover when they see the large, full bathroom with half of the back wall dedicated to a pantry.

The StorMore bedside nightstands add the perfect touch to a comfy and roomy bed. The bedroom area is plenty large leaving room for you to walk around two flanking shirt closets. Impressive for such a small trailer.

One of the best features is the Venture LevelMate Pro, which lets you level this RV with your smartphone!

What Class Hitch Is Required To Tow 3,500 lbs?

Matching your travel trailer with the proper hitch is critical for safe towing. So which class of hitch is best for travel trailers in the 3500lb range?

A Class I hitch rated for 2000 lbs is far too underpowered and although a Class II hitch is rated for “up to” 3,500 lbs, you should stick with a Class III for anything with a GVWR that exceeds 3,500 lbs .

For instance, just because the travel trailer features a dry weight of 3,000 lbs, doesn’t mean you can’t approach that GVWR without threatening to overwhelm a Class II.

A Class II is perfectly fine for lightweight travel trailers like the Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH or the Safari Condo R1713. However, with a Class II, you’re pushing it with an inTech Sol Eclipse and going too far overboard with the Jayco Jay Flight 184BS.

How Much Are Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs?

There’s a decent disparity among travel trailers under 3,500 lbs. Ultra lightweight travel trailers typically fall under the ‘entry-level’ category in terms of price, which is anything between $12k and $40k. Unfortunately, much of the price is reliant on brand rather than substance.

For instance, the Airstream Basecamp 16 has a starting price of $46k, which is $6k higher than the numbers we list above. Then there’s the Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ, which retails for around $26k. The Clipper is longer and roomier than the Basecamp.

Are there important and distinguishing features between the two? You bet. Is it worth an additional $20k? Well, a good deal of that is brand power, so it’s entirely up to you. On the bright side, maintenance on smaller RVs is a lot easier and more cost-effective than their larger brethren.

That’s not to say that any of the brands above lack amenities. All it means is brand carries value all by itself, long before you step inside the RV door for the first time.

It’s also important to remember that though these are smaller campers, a lot of technology and innovation goes into making them small while still retaining livability.

Can You Full-Time In Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs?

can you full-time in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

You certainly can but there will be consequences you’ll have to overcome and you’ll need to get used to life without certain amenities. You’re looking at a very constrained space, every day, without change. You can relieve that somewhat with tent attachment options and more of an outside lifestyle.

We see many RVers who full time in small travel trailers use Clam tent enclosures to add additional outdoor living space to their camping experience.

Consistent power needs will take on a new dimension, depending on whether you are boondocking or grabbing shore power at every opportunity. One of the biggest obstacles to overcome, mostly if you like living off-grid for sustained periods or just prefer boondocking, is tank size.

Those fresh, grey, and black tanks are capable of dictating your life if you let them. You will have to get innovative.

Smaller RVs often equate to cheaper construction and may not be up to par depending on where you plan on taking them. For instance, the Basecamp 16 is far more off-road worthy than the R-Pod.

Regardless of what your lifestyle preference is, do your homework on these models beforehand and make sure you know what you are getting into.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are an absolute blast, especially if you are into the adventurous spirit and hitting the road with your significant other.

Are they the best option in the world for full-time living? Maybe—maybe not. But they are incredibly versatile, which opens up a lot of doors for your own, personal innovations and style.

The above-listed options feature some fantastic choices with a number of different styles and amenities. If you can’t find something perfect for your next adventure on this list, you probably won’t find it anywhere else.

There are two versions of the Ascape: the Grand Ascape ST and the Grand Ascape Plus. While that might feel limiting for people looking to customize their space, the tried and tested layout is ideal for most campers.

The Ascape ST has a wet bath and an outdoor shower, while the Ascape Plus offers a cassette toilet and an outdoor shower. Both offer a 50-watt front-mounted solar panel, a 6-foot Thule awning, a 3-cubic-foot refrigerator, and a 9,200-BTU roof-mounted air conditioner.

<p>Ever thought about hitching a tiny den to your car and taking off? The MeerKat’s exactly that – a snug, no-fuss hideout that’s light enough for most cars to tow. It’s got this cool, laid-back vibe, with just enough room inside to stretch out, cook up a storm, and catch some Z’s.</p><p>You can stand up straight inside and even go to the toilet in the porta-potty included in the package. What’s neat is the MeerKat fits right into a standard garage, so when you’re not off adventuring, it’s tucked out of the way. </p>

8. The Meerkat – Most Innovative Travel Trailer

  • Dry Weight : 1,180 pounds
  • Fresh Water Capacity: N/A

The Meerkat camper under 2,000 pounds is one of a kind. Featuring a unique, round pop-up top, this ultralight trailer has some serious personality.

The tower isn’t just for looks; the extra headspace in the living area and kitchen provides stand-up headroom for travelers of nearly any height. Be aware that you’ll need portable water containers for dishes in this camper, but it does have a water pump that helps you easily pull water from a container stored under the sink.

To maximize your outside space, The Meerkat has an attachable awning room that extends off the front door to double your living space. If you add the awning room, The Meerkat boasts an impressive footprint for such a lightweight trailer.

<p>The Timberleaf Classic <a href="https://www.thewaywardhome.com/teardrop-camper-interior/">Teardrop Camper</a> has a cute, eye-catching design that makes it an obvious choice for our list. But what sets this trailer apart from the competition is the fully insulated cabin. That goes a long way for extended-season camping on cooler evenings. </p><p>For someone who loves to cook on any camping trip, the rear galley offers a built-in sink, an 11 or 17.5-gallon onboard water storage tank, multiple drawers for storing <a href="https://www.thewaywardhome.com/campervan-kitchen-essentials/">kitchen essentials</a>, and options to include a two-burner cookstove, a pull-out tray for a cooler or portable fridge, and three cooler or fridge models.</p>

9. Classic Timberleaf Teardrop – Most “Retro” Travel Trailer

The Classic Teardrop by Timberleaf is a small cabin travel trailer perfect for weekend adventures under the stars. With the largest skylight of any teardrop camper we’ve seen, the interior cabin feels open and spacious even when safely closed off from the outdoors.

When you tour the Timberleaf Classic Teardrop camper, it’s impossible not to notice the retro-inspired styling details in the exterior rear galley, such as aluminum edging and leather handles, that bring rustic charm to your cook space.

Because it doesn’t include a bath or shower option, it’s better suited for campground stays where facilities are available. However, you could pick up a portable cassette toilet and upgrade to an outdoor shower like the RoadShower for improved off-grid camping with the Timberleaf.

With an aerodynamic, teardrop shape, this 2,000-pound camper can go anywhere you want to take it without draining your fuel efficiency.
