For Griff’s Canadian Adventure , the veteran Welsh comedian Griff Rhys Jones goes on an epic journey for Channel 4 across the vast commonwealth country of differing landscapes and cultures.  As he explores Canada over six episodes, and takes in its cultures and traditions, he also tries to de-mystify and debunk Canadian cliches, plus he looks on in awe at its beautiful wilderness, enjoying some encounters with beavers and polar bears.

As well as packing his snowshoes, Griff will be heading across Canada by seaplane, train, cargo boat, dogsled and monster truck in search of the "true soul" of the country. In each episode, Griff sets himself a challenge that forms the spine of his journey. Typically, the challenges are quirky and reflect the spirit of the region of Canada he is visiting.

Griff’s Canadian Adventure — destinations and episode guide

Here's our guide to the six episodes in

EPISODE 1 NEWFOUNDLAND — BIGNESS British comedian and travel enthusiast Griff Rhys Jones begins his journey across Canada, exploring Newfoundland and Labrador in the East and uncovering what makes Canada distinctly unique and decidedly "big".

EPISODE 2: QUEBEC — FRENCHNESS It's off to Quebec to uncover just how "French" Canada really is. From Montreal to Quebec City, Griff will reveal how its history has helped shaped the multicultural Canada of today. He'll be speaking French too!

EPISODE 3: ONTARIO — NICENESS He begins his exploration of Ontario at Niagara Falls, which is on the US border, to uncover what it is that makes Canadians such a nice bunch of people.

EPISODE 4: MANITOBA - COLDNESS  Things get chilly and decidedly dangerous for Griff as he explores the frozen wilds of Manitoba, North Canada, and visits a town that sometimes has more polar bears than people.

EPISODE 5: SASAKATCHEWON/ALBERTA — RICHNESS / EMPTINESS  The prairies and vast sprawling plains of both Saskatchewan and Alberta provinces are visited by Griff, who discovers they reveal riches from fossils to farmland.

EPISODE 6: BRITISH COLUMBIA — HAPPINESS Griff finishes his journey across Canada in the popular, lifestyle province of British Columbia in the Pacific Northwest and discovers what it is about this place that makes people so happy. He takes a lovely flight around Vancouver.

Griff takes a sea plane in Vancouver in the final episode.

Interview: Griff Rhys Jones on what happens to him Griff's Canadian Adventure

Griff, episode one starts with you floating in the freezing Atlantic. How did they persuade you to do that? "I always say we should have something arresting to start the series, like me jumping out of a boat for the Australian one, so it is genuinely my own fault! My intention was that I'd be in the middle of a storm and rescued by helicopter, but unfortunately the budget wouldn’t run to that. And I had to wear a dry suit, because otherwise I’d have been dead in 30 seconds!"

What other scary activities do you try out? "In British Columbia, they took me abseiling, which I’ve done before. But the mountaineer hadn’t told me that, to get to the place we were abseiling down from, there was a traverse across a sheer cliff! When I was in New Zealand three years ago, they persuaded me to do a bungee jump off the Kawarau suspension bridge, and I have never been so scared in my life. I thought: ‘is this actually what I should be doing at the age of 65?!"

How did you enjoy trying out as an ice hockey keeper? "That was terrifying! The players were sent one by one to whizz down the rink and bang a puck in my general direction at about 150mph! As the goalie, it’s just your body between this rubber bullet and the goal! And you're wearing this sort of suit of armour that’s really uncomfortable. I don't know how they do it!"

Do you think twice about any of these hair-raising stunts? "Once the camera is running, you feel: ‘I ought to do this’, but there are times when you think : ‘Why am I doing this?’ And I tend to vocalise that!"

Where did you go to look for polar bears? "We went to this little outpost called Churchill where, every year, polar bears go through the town as they move from the tundra to the ice in search of food. We arrived on Halloween, when the kids were trick or treating, and the fire service, police and local volunteers had formed a  cordon, armed with guns, to look out for polar bears!"

How close did you get to the polar bears? "We were in a tundra buggy with an armed guard, and we encountered a mum and a teenager, who came to investigate us."

How dangerous are the polar bears? "A fireman told me he’d been six inches from a polar bear when he was out jogging. And we were served by a girl in a cafe who said: ‘I came round a dark corner on the way home from work, and I was attacked by a polar bear and nearly scalped.’"

What are the facts and the fiction about Canadians? "I thought the fact that they don’t want to be mistaken for Americans was a myth, but it’s true. And there’s this myth that Canadians are the nicest people in the world, and in fact they were unbelievably sweet, pleasant and charming."

What surprised you about Canada? "There are more Ukrainian dance teams in the midwest of Canada than in Ukraine! Also they are very proud of their chocolate, but it actually turns out to be Cadbury's. And when you say ‘this is British’ they're not  impressed!"

Didn't you encounter a lot of Canadians during your gap year? "Yes! I ran the disco on a cruise ship that had 600 Canadian schoolgirls on board! I don’t know if you’ve ever seen that reality show Below Deck, but like the crew on that, we were not supposed to fraternise with the passengers!"

No holiday romance then? "I did fall in love, and I started writing letters to about 20 Canadian girlfriends! I did think, while making this series: ‘what if I met up again with these elderly matrons who were my former girlfriends?’ That would make interesting TV!"

Did you bring back any souvenirs? "One thing I did buy, because I thought I looked so good in it, was a white Calgary hat. It's gone straight in that cupboard which is full of things that you like enormously when you try them on, and then you never wear again! And I brought my four-year-old grand-daughter back an ice hockey shirt."

Where does your love of travel come from? "When I was a kid we didn’t go abroad – we went to West Mersea in Essex for our holidays. And then when I was working for the BBC for 20-odd years I didn’t get abroad much. It all started when I went to Sudan for Comic Relief.

Is this your dream job? "People say: ‘What is it with all these celebrities taking holidays on TV?!’ But I have to say it's actually quite hard work, as you’re often starting filming at five in the morning, and finishing at midnight! So yes, it is a dream job, but also a tough one."

It's little a bit fishy in this bit of Canada!

11 Great Canadian Films and TV Shows Streaming Now

Check out our top picks of amazing series and movies.

Nicholas DeRenzo,

Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara of Schitt's Creek and the cast of Kim's Convenience

In 2017, the musical Come From Away swept Broadway audiences up on a sea of Canadian warmth and good humor. An unexpected and immediate hit, it's the story of how the citizens of Gander, Newfoundland, came together to help 7,000 airline passengers who were stranded in the town on September 11, 2001, when 38 planes were diverted and landed there. The Tony Award–winning production is still running — performances resume Sept. 21 — but if you can't make it to New York, you're in luck: A filmed version will be released on Apple TV+ on Sept. 10, so you can stream the feel-good musical from your own home. Inspired by Come From Away ? Here are 11 more movies and TV shows from north of the border that offer a window into Canadian art, culture, history and society.

Kim's Convenience (2016-21)

The Setting:  Toronto

The Plot:  Based on a play by Ins Choi, this sweet series follows a Korean-Canadian family that runs a convenience store in Toronto's Moss Park neighborhood. The setup and intergenerational squabbles feel as comfortingly retro as a ‘70s sitcom, but  New York Times  writer Priya Krishna has also praised the show for the revolutionary way it normalizes Korean culture and cuisine. Marvel fans may recognize Simu Liu, who plays son Jung Kim in the show, from his starring role in this year's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The Most Canadian Part:  Toronto is often cited as the world's most multicultural city (51.5 percent of residents self-identified as ethnic minorities in the 2016 census), and this show introduces audiences to one of those immigrant communities.

Watch It:   Kim's Convenience , on Netflix

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001)

The Setting:  Igloolik, Nunavut

The Plot:  Inspired by an Inuit legend passed down through oral tradition, this nearly three-hour epic is the first film to be shot in Inuktitut, one of Canada's Inuit languages. The movie is about love, betrayal and vengeance in a tight-knit community a thousand years ago. But beyond the juicy plot points, it offers an opportunity to see the ingenious ways these people forage, fish, hunt, make clothing, live in igloos and use sled dogs in the remote and hostile Arctic wilderness. At the Cannes Film Festival, the film received the Caméra d'Or for best first feature film.

The Most Canadian Part: In 2015, critics and filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival named Atanarjuat the best Canadian movie of all time.

Watch It:   The Fast Runner , on Apple TV ($3.99)

Indian Horse (2017)

The Setting:  White River and Toronto, Ontario

The Plot:  Canadian cinema is unsurprisingly filled with hockey movies ( Goon ,  The Rocket ,  Les Boys ), but few have as much to say about bigger ideas than this 2017 drama, which shed a light on the shocking abuses of the Indian residential school system. Run by Canada's Department of Indian Affairs, it was used to forcefully assimilate Indigenous children at mandatory, church-run boarding schools, and the last one didn't shut down until 1997. Based on a 2012 novel by Ojibwe author Richard Wagamese, the film tells the story of Saul Indian Horse, who survives the residential school system and later becomes a professional hockey player.

The Most Canadian Part:  The book and movie are being taught in many Canadian schools as part of the nation's reckoning with this painful history.

Anne With an E (2017-19)

The Setting:  The fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island

The Plot:  Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic 1908 children's novel  Anne of Green Gables  has yielded a century's worth of adaptations, including TV shows, movies, radio productions, plays, musicals and even a Japanese animated series. This most recent version — which won the Canadian Screen Award for best drama in 2017 and 2018 — still follows the story of the imaginative and chatty orphan, Anne Shirley, who is adopted by an elderly brother and sister in small-town Prince Edward Island, but it's not afraid to tackle big ideas like trauma, gender inequality and the pressure to conform.

The Most Canadian Part:  The theme song is performed by The Tragically Hip, the best-selling Canadian band from 1996 to 2016, according to Nielsen Music Canada.

Watch It:   Anne With an E , on Netflix

Slings and Arrows (2003-06)

The Setting:  The fictional town of New Burbage

The Plot:  Ontario's real-life Stratford Festival, which has been going strong since 1953, is the inspiration for this high-minded dramedy series, co-created by Kids in the Hall  and Superstore star Mark   McKinney (62), playwright Susan Coyne (63) and comedian Bob Martin (58). Each of the show's three seasons traces the production of a different Shakespearean play — Hamlet , Macbeth  and King Lear  — and the Bard's themes often seep into the personal lives of the festival's cast and crew.

The Most Canadian Part:  The ensemble was a proving ground for future Hollywood stars, including  Spotlight  Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams and Luke Kirby, who won an Emmy for playing Lenny Bruce in  The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel .

Watch It:   Slings and Arrows , available to stream on Amazon Prime  with subscriptions to Acorn TV ($5.99/month), Sundance Now ($6.99/month), or AMC+ ($8.99/month)

One Week (2008)

The Setting:  All across the Canadian wilderness, from Toronto to Vancouver Island

The Plot:  When elementary school teacher Ben Tyler (played by  The Affair  star Joshua Jackson) is diagnosed with stage-four cancer, he decides to buy a motorcycle and hit the road after he sees the message “Go West Young Man” printed on a Tim Hortons coffee cup. Along the way, he meets a life-affirming cast of characters, including a man who had recovered from his own bout with cancer — played by Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip, who sadly died of glioblastoma in 2017. Tyler rides a horse in rural Saskatchewan, hikes in Banff National Park, and surfs with humpback whales in the Pacific.

The Most Canadian Part:  The soundtrack is made up entirely of Canadian bands and singers.

Watch It:   One Week , on Amazon Prime Video

Schitt's Creek (2015-20)

The Setting:  The fictional town of Schitt's Creek

The Plot:  If you hadn't heard of this cult-turned-mainstream sitcom before the 2020 Emmys, chances are you know about it now: It set a record by sweeping every comedy category. Eugene Levy (74) and Catherine O'Hara (67) star as Johnny and Moira Rose, who lose their family fortune and are forced to move into a motel in Schitt's Creek, a small town that Johnny bought in the 1990s as a gag gift. Along for the ride are their spoiled adult children, David (Eugene Levy's son and show co-creator Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy).

The Most Canadian Part:  Levy and O'Hara first started working together on  SCTV , Canada's answer to  Saturday Night Live  and a launching pad for nearly every Canadian comedian you love, including John Candy, Rick Moranis (68) and Andrea Martin (74).

Watch It:   Schitt's Creek , on Netflix

Little Mosque on the Prairie (2007-12)

The Setting:  The fictional town of Mercy, Saskatchewan

The Plot:  Think you know all there is to know about the prairie provinces? They might not be as homogenous as you assumed! This six-season sitcom follows imam Amaar Rashid (Zaib Shaikh), who runs a mosque out of the rented parish hall of an Anglican church in the middle of Saskatchewan. Expect culture clashes of all kinds — progressive vs. conservative Muslims, Christians vs. Muslims, immigrants vs. locals vs. transplants from the big city — though the topics are always approached with a gentle and warmhearted tone.

The Most Canadian Part:  A Gallup poll in 2019 ranked Canada as the most accepting nation for migrants, like the ones who populate the show's small town.

Watch It:   Little Mosque on the Prairie , on IMDb TV on Amazon Prime Video

The Grand Seduction (2013)

The Setting:  The fictional town of Tickle Head, Newfoundland and Labrador

The Plot:  A remake of a 2003 French-language film set in rural Quebec, this English adaptation moves the action to a tiny fishing village in Newfoundland where everyone is on welfare and there are few jobs. A petrochemical company considers building a factory in Tickle Head, but there's a catch: The town must have a resident doctor. Unemployed fisherman Murray French (Brendan Gleeson, 66) sets in motion a plan by which the 120 residents must work together to “seduce” a big-city plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul Lewis (Taylor Kitsch from  Friday Night Lights ), into sticking around.

The Most Canadian Part:  Gleeson, who's from Ireland, said he was worried about mastering the Newfoundland accent, but he was in luck: The super-unique local dialect draws heavily from influences in the British Isles.

Watch It:   The Grand Seduction , on Amazon Prime Video

Mon Oncle Antoine (1971)

The Setting:  The fictional town of Black Hawk, Quebec

The Plot:  Often cited as the best Canadian film ever made, this sensitive and naturalistic coming-of-age drama is set over one Christmas in the 1940s in a Quebec asbestos-mining town. While the plot is mostly focused on the small-scale human dramas of the family that owns the village's general store and undertaking business, it also hints at the major, real-world political changes that were about to sweep through the province during the 1949 Asbestos Strike and the subsequent Quiet Revolution.

The Most Canadian Part:  There are quite a few nods to the perpetual tensions between French- and English-speakers, such as when the local teens throw snowballs at the English-speaking mine owners.

Watch It:   Mon Oncle Antoine , on the Criterion Channel

Maudie (2016)

The Setting:  Marshalltown, Nova Scotia

The Plot:  A joint production by Ireland and Canada, this biopic is a loving ode to Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-70), who is played by two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins ( The Shape of Water ). Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Maud takes a job as a housekeeper for fish peddler Everett Lewis ( Ethan Hawke , 50) and moves into his 10-foot-by-12-foot cottage. To brighten up the place, she begins painting the walls with cheerful flowers and birds, and she soon becomes an unlikely art hero, earning her the nickname “the Grandma Moses of Canada.”

The Most Canadian Part:  Maritime Canadians have a real soft spot for Maud, and her restored cottage can now be found inside the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax.

Watch It:   Maudie , on Starz , Amazon Prime Video

TV shows featuring Canada you need to watch this autumn

TV shows featuring Canada

Canada is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Little surprise then that its varying landscape has provided the backdrop for plenty of TV shows and documentaries in the past.

Anyone who has been on holiday to Canada recently will have seen the country’s beauty firsthand. But if you have yet to experience its wilderness and wildlife, try and catch a programme about it to give you a flavour.

This autumn there are a whole host of fascinating documentaries and TV shows about Canada. With stunning cinematography and intimate footage of animals, there’s no better way to get an insight into Canada’s wild places. Here we take you through the best ones to enjoy, as well as some classic programmes that you can watch on catch-up.

Arctic Live – BBC One

Polar bears will be featured on Arctic Live

Renting a motorhome in Canada and heading to Churchill on Hudson Bay in Manitoba has become a hugely popular holiday. In the magical reaches of arctic Canada you can see the phenomenal northern lights as well as polar bears in the wild.

This amazing documentary gives viewers an insight into this stunning part of the world. Dedicated cameramen capture the movements of polar bears as they descend upon the shores of Hudson Bay each autumn.

In what the BBC describes as its most ambitious live broadcast, Arctic Live looks to follow the story of the bears and the entire Arctic.

Presenters Gordon Buchanan, Kate Humble and Simon Reeve explore unspoilt areas of Alaska, looking at how oil, gas and minerals are tantalisingly within reach as temperatures rise and ice melts. The documentary even looks at how people in Churchill stay safe whilst living side-by-side with the world’s largest land carnivore.

The BBC documentary also heads out onto the tundra to share a live feed of polar bears hunting for seals and other prey.

How to watch it: The first episode aired on Monday 8 November. If you missed this and the rest of three-part documentary then catch up on BBC iPlayer here .

Recommended tour: If you want to experience polar bears like the Arctic Live team then the Churchill and Polar Bear Experience trip is perfect for you.

Operation Gold Rush – BBC Two

If you love the Canadian wilderness then you really need to watch Operation Gold Rush with Dan Snow. In the show, he leads a team of adventurers on an unforgettable journey across the wilderness of Canada.

The historian follows in the footsteps of prospectors from the last great gold rush in the 19 th century. Their 500-mile, month-long expedition ended with the goal of striking gold in the frozen wilderness of Canada.

This really is one of the best TV shows for people interested in exploring, nature and history. Dan Snow travels from the coast of Alaska to the goldfields of the Klondike in the Yukon, on the edge of the Canadian arctic. Thousands of men and women undertook this gruelling journey when seeking their fortunes in the Gold Rush.

The documentary follows the fates of these early adventurers – only one in three of whom made it to Klondike. Dan Snow and his team set out to relive the journey.

How to watch it: The first episode aired on 30 October and you can watch it here on BBC iPlayer. The next episode will be on BBC Two on Sunday 6 November at 9pm.

Recommended tour: Follow in the footsteps of the Yukon Pioneers on a breath-taking fly drive holiday. Adventure from Whitehorse to Dawson City and pan for gold yourself.

Jumbo Wild – Netflix

Jumbo Wild depicts the decade-long battle over the future of British Columbia’s beautiful Jumbo Valley.

First Nations, conservationists, skiers, snowboarders and local residents have all fought a proposal to develop the Purcell Mountains in British Columbia.

The documentary gives viewers an insight into the tensions between the protection of wilderness and the increasing desire to develop wild places.

Directed by Nick Waggoner, Jumbo Wild doesn’t just highlight this incredible tug of war, it displays amazing backcountry ski and snowboard footage.

How to watch it: The documentary is currently available on Netflix .

Recommended tour: A holiday in British Columbia will give you the opportunity to see Jumbo Valley. If you have hired a motorhome, then you can travel around the province and stop-off nearby Jumbo Valley and other popular destinations.

Alone in the Wild – Channel 4

Although this documentary was first shown back in 2009, it is certainly a great way to see the famous wilderness of Canada.

The programme follows the journey of Ed Wardle as he is dropped off in the unforgiving Yukon wilderness. With just basic provisions and cameras to film him, he tries to survive completely alone in the wild.

The three-part documentary shows one man’s battle against hunger and a lack of human contact. Viewers can see the ups and downs of his journey as he tries to catch salmon swimming upstream and sleep in the desolate Yukon wilds.

How to watch it: This incredible story is currently available on Channel 4’s on demand service.

Recommended tour: The Northern Lights of the Yukon will introduce you to Yukon’s wilderness and also gives you the chance to see the remarkable northern lights.

Moksgm’ol: The Quest for the Spirit Bear – YouTube

Kermode Spirit Bear

This fascinating documentary by National Geographic looks at the story of the rare, blonde Spirit Bear. The Tsimshian people believe the Kermode bear was sent by the Creator to remind us that the world was once covered in ice and snow.

For centuries known only to the Tsimshian people, the secret of Moksgm’ol slowly became known as the world took note of this beautiful animal.

While delving into the story of the spirit bear, the documentary shows fantastic footage of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest and its different wildlife. From some of the largest trees in Canada to Kermode bears and the rainforest’s other amazing animals, the TV show really gives viewers an in-depth and fact-filled look at this little-known part of Canada.

How to watch it: You can watch the documentary on YouTube here .

Recommended tour: A great way to see the special spirit bears of the Great Bear Rainforest is to go bear watching at Spirit Bear Lodge .

The series three Race Across the World team: Monique and Ladi, Tricia and Cathie, Claudia and Kevin, Zainib and Mobeen, and Marc and Michael

BBC’s Race Across the World stirs Canadian hopes of UK tourist boom

British viewers are showing an interest in travelling to Canada after launch of reality show’s third series

Canada’s tourism industry this week expressed hopes for a rise in UK visitors after the third series of BBC’s Race Across the World launched in the UK to rave reviews .

The reality show, in which five couples travel 10,000 miles (16,000km) from one side of Canada to another on a shoestring and without flying, could be a boon to the country’s recovering tourism sector. Arrivals were down 40% in 2022 from their high in 2019 , but there are hopes for an increase with UK viewers inspired by the epic scenery and charmed by helpful Canadians.

This year is already looking better in Newfoundland and Labrador, said Candice Walsh, of the province’s department of tourism, who was “thrilled” to learn that the race’s finish line is in the capital, St John’s. “We’re still recovering, but we’re hearing that bookings are coming in earlier than ever and numbers continue to rise close to 2019 levels.”

As the race started in Vancouver, the five teams dashed away – that’s if they could find their way out of Stanley Park – for Tlell on the distant archipelago of Haida Gwaii, 745 miles up the coast of British Columbia, reached only by ferry, and known as the “Canadian Galapagos”. Showcasing remote locations appears to be a goal of the show and this could lead visitors to explore beyond the country’s tourism hotspots.

Maureen Riley, vice-president for international markets at Destination Canada , said: “The UK has always been a top market for Canada, and initial Twitter comments are showing that the first episode has already inspired Brits to start researching trips to Canada. As the show carries on over its nine episodes to explore lesser known areas of our country, hopefully it will encourage Brits to go deeper, further and stay longer.”

Patterns of ice on the Wheaton River, near Whitehorse, Yukon.

Haida Gwaii , home to the Haida people for more than 10,000 years, will offer the adventurers the opportunity to meet totem-pole carvers and kayak the astonishing Gwaii Haanas national park reserve while learning about Indigenous traditions and art springing from a deep relationship with the land, sky and ocean.

The first episode has already shown that overland travel can be a challenge in Canada with sporadic ferry services, few rail lines that cross the country and a patchy bus network suffering reduced services since the pandemic. Father and daughter team Kevin and Claudia miss the bus from Campbell River to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island by 45 minutes and pay C$500 (£300) for a taxi to avoid being stranded. Contestants will have to be a bit more creative and rely on the kindness of strangers if they want to stretch their budgets. Childhood friends Cathie and Tricia appear to have picked up quickly on the Canadian reliance on car-sharing, while Zainib and Mobeen tap into the freewheeling outback spirit of locals like Corey who barely hesitates before taking them on a 10-hour ride from Prince George to Prince Rupert to catch the ferry to Haida Gwaii – and is quickly knocked down from C$500 to C$250 for the pleasure.

As they head north to the territory of Yukon, north of British Columbia, in episode two, the teams will probably hike, paddle, cycle, or dogsled part of the 17,400-mile Trans Canada Trail that links the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans – the world’s longest multi-use recreational trail.

It takes effort and patience to reach the north but they will be rewarded with singular landscapes and rich cultures. There has been a strong push to use sustainable tourism to develop the economy here and Indigenous peoples are leading the effort. For example, several Indigenous governments manage Canada’s newest national park reserve, Thaidene Nëné, in the Northwest Territories. This lies within the vast geological area known as the Canadian Shield, and is accessible only by float or ski plane, boat or snowmobile. Whitehorse, the Yukon’s capital, has meanwhile become an outdoor adventure mecca without the Rockies’ crowds.

From Canada’s northern lakes and forests, the teams will travel south and east. And while many might think the prairie provinces are fly-over country, they have plenty to offer. Winnipeg, in southern Manitoba near the US border, for example, is home to the world’s largest collection of Inuit art.

There’s an awful lot of Canada. Time will tell if UK viewers come to discover it. One posted: “This is one giant advert for tourism in Canada and it’s working as I want to go to Canada now.”

The 32 Best TV Shows About Time Travel

time travel TV shows

Time traveling is a popular topic when it comes to all types of entertainment from books to films. But in recent years time travel has also become a popular theme in TV.

So let’s take a look at this list of the best time traveling TV shows and find out how each of them handles time travel and all the history that comes with it.

Doctor Who, BBC One (1963 – 1989, 2005 – present)

BBC One Doctor Who

When it comes to time traveling and TV, probably the most notable name in this niche is Doctor Who  because this time travel series has been around for 39 seasons and is still going strong.

Hailing from British television channel BBC One, Doctor Who tells the tale of the Time Lord aka The Doctor, and his companions as they travel to different times and try to prevent evil forces from changing history and hurting innocent lives.

Once the Time Lord gets hurt beyond healing, he can transform into a new body and continue saving the world. Hence why at this point 13 (soon to be 14) different actors have played The Doctor.

Doctor Who is not only a huge part of the fabric of British popular culture but by now this time travel show has found its way into the hearts of many people all over the world.

It has inspired many spin-offs in the form of TV shows, comic books, movies, novels, you name it. But more than that, by now it has become an industry standard both when it comes to science-fiction television series and shows about time travel.

No wonder that Doctor Who continues to be successful after countless actor changes and plot twists.

Where to watch Doctor Who:

Timeless, nbc (2016 – 2018).

NBC Timeless

Another time travel TV series that has already become a cult classic and is adored by fans all over the world is NBC’s Timeless . And despite the turmoil that this show has gone through, it still is time traveling at its best.

Starring Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter, and Abigail Spencer as Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy, Timeless  details the trio traveling to different times in an effort to stop their adversaries from rewriting history.

But as it later turns out, the conspiracy goes deeper than them just changing history. Since the people who our trio is chasing are traveling through time to take down a dangerous and all-powerful organization. The same one that helped build the time machine that Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy are using.

And although Timeless went on for just two seasons (and a two-hour wrap-up movie), you should still check out the show because it’s not only entertaining but will make you think and want to know more about the events that each episode is exploring.

Where to watch Timeless:

Dc’s legends of tomorrow, the cw (2016 – present).

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

If you are a fan of superhero TV shows, then you will probably have heard about DC’s Legends of Tomorrow . It is a show that is a huge part of The CW’s Arrowverse. And has crossed over with shows like Arrow , The Flash , and Supergirl multiple times now.

And even if you don’t like the rest of the superhero series but do enjoy a good old time travel TV show, then I suggest you still give Legends of Tomorrow a watch.

The plot of this show is based around a team of superheroes that are traveling through time in their time machine christened the Waverider to prevent different catastrophes from happening. Both ones made by others and those created by the team’s previous adventures.

At the forefront, there are well-known DC heroes like Rip Hunter, Firestorm, The Atom, Kid Flash, Steel, and Vixen. Joined by some original characters like Caity Lotz’s White Canary among others.

One of the defining characteristics of Legends of Tomorrow is how fun it is. Because adjectives like unapologetic, witty, and entertaining are frequently used to describe this time travel series.

However, more than that, it adds an interesting layer to the whole Arrowverse universe. And above all, it is just a hoot to watch.

Where to watch Legends of Tomorrow:

12 monkeys, syfy (2015 – 2018).

SyFy 12 Monkeys

Then there also is SyFy’s 12 Monkeys , which is a little darker take on time traveling. One that comes with mystery, drama, and apocalyptic stakes. But that doesn’t lessen how good this time travel TV series is.

Split between two timelines, 12 Monkeys centers on Aaron Stanford’s James Cole, who is tasked to travel back in time and stop the distribution of a virus that has the ability to end the human race as we know it.

In Cole’s real timeline, the year is 2043 and people are struggling to survive because of the terrible mutations caused by the virus. So Cole travels back to 2015 to find virologist Cassie Railly, played by Amanda Schull, that can help him stop the release of the virus and the organization that is behind it called The Army of the 12 Monkeys.

If you think about it, the post-apocalyptic setting and time travel really do go hand in hand. Because if you can go back in time to stop history from being changed, why not go back to change it if it prevents something terrible from happening?

And that is what this show explores. Beautifully combining elements of mystery, drama, and science fiction, to form a great TV show.

Where to watch 12 Monkeys:

Outlander, starz (2014 – present).

travel tv show canada

Want another show that mixes time travel with historical events and does it flawlessly? Then you should put Outlander on your must-watch TV show list!

The show starts in the 1940s when a combat nurse Claire Randall visits Inverness, Scotland as part of her second honeymoon with her husband Frank. Claire accidentally happens upon the standing stones at Craigh na Dun which transport her back in time to 1743.

To return to her own time she first has to survive 18th-century Scotland. And she does so by joining a group of rebel Highlanders from Clan MacKenzie and marrying one of the Highlanders, Jamie Fraser. But eventually, she falls in love with her new husband and aids the clan in evading British redcoats that are pursuing them.

Over the five seasons of Outlander that are currently out (with the sixth coming soon), we see Claire jump back and forth between the 20th and 18th centuries and her two families as she faces two pregnancies, wars, and much more. But eventually, Claire finds her way back to Jamie.

Where to watch Outlander:

Travelers, showcase (2016 – 2018).

Netflix Travelers

Then we have Travelers , a joint venture between Netflix and Canada’s Showcase that will tick all of your time travel TV show boxes.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world , this show depicts the adventures of travelers – operatives who go back in time to prevent the collapse of society.

These travelers are transferred into the bodies of our current-day humans, who otherwise would die, to blend in with twenty-first-century people. And with the help of their artificial intelligence boss from the future, travelers carry out missions in order to stop many catastrophic events from happening.

Travelers is a great mix of sci-fi and drama, featuring a great cast and spine-tingling storylines. So if you love all that and love a good time-travel series, then look no further than Travelers .

Where to watch Travelers:

Dark, netflix (2017 – 2020).

travel tv show canada

Netflix’s first German original series was the science fiction series Dark , which mixes in some mystery drama with sci-fi: time travel, the apocalypse, wormholes, and parallel worlds.

Dark takes place in Winden, a fictional German town, and begins in 2019 after children begin to disappear from the town. As the show progresses, however, timelines jump drastically between as early as 1921 to as late as 2053.

As four families in Winden investigate the disappearances to reunite with their lost loved ones, they discover a wormhole beneath the local powerplant that allows them to travel between timelines, thus uncovering a generations-long conspiracy involving the town and their families.

Where to watch Dark:

The umbrella academy, netflix (2019 – present).

travel tv show canada

Netflix brings another to the list with The Umbrella Academy .

On October 1, 1989, 43 infants were suddenly born from unsuspecting women despite them not even being pregnant the day before.

7 of them were raised together as the Hargreeve siblings and trained in their respective abilities until their relationship became strained as teenagers and they drifted apart.

Now, as adults, they’re brought back together by the death of their adoptive father – and the threat of the end of the world, of course.

They’re forced to travel back in time but end up in different times and places, and must find each other again to stop the nuclear apocalypse.

Where to watch The Umbrella Academy:

Seven days, upn (1998 – 2001).

travel tv show canada

We know that the National Security Agency has its share of secrets, but what if one of those secrets was a time-traveling machine?

In UPN’s Seven Days , the plot centers on one such device made from alien technology found at Roswell.

The Chronosphere, as it’s called, can only be used in times when national security is at risk – the limited capacity of the device allows for just one human to go back in time by seven days in order to avert disasters.

Thus, when the White House is attacked, the NSA employs former Navy SEAL and CIA operative Frank Parker to go back and prevent it from happening.

Where to watch Seven Days:

Loki, disney+ (2021 – present).

travel tv show canada

Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest gifts to the cinema of our time. Now, the MCU has expanded even further into the television medium and we’ve got a few series to accompany it!

One of those is Loki , which of course, centers on the God of Thunder’s mischievous adopted brother.

After the events in Avengers: Endgame , particularly his stealing of the Tesseract, Loki inadvertently creates another timeline that began in 2012, making him a “time variant” version of himself.

When confronted by the authorities, Loki is given two choices: face punishment and cease to exist, or travel through time to fix his own mess and the threat that has emerged.

Where to watch Loki:

Making history, fox (2017).

travel tv show canada

The thing about traveling back in time is, you have to be very careful that your actions in the past won’t affect the future (which is essentially your actual present).

Most of the time, that’s something you wouldn’t know until you go back to your time. In Making History , however, Dan Chambers travels back in time to right before the American Revolution and sets off a series of events that seriously mess up the future.

Being able to constantly travel between time periods, Dan recruits the help of history professor Chis Parrish to travel with him and ensure that the American Revolution still takes place.

Where to watch Making History:

Quantum leap, nbc (1989 – 1993).

travel tv show canada

The title of NBC’s sci-fi comedy-drama Quantum Leap is also the name of the time travel machine that accidentally sends its creator, physicist Dr. Sam Beckett, back into the past.

Now, he’s stuck – and not as himself, either!

Sam discovers that he jumped into the body of a stranger and because he’s still himself, doesn’t know all the details of his current identity.

With the help of his friend Al, who appears as a hologram only he can see, he must fix something that went wrong so he can jump in time again and eventually get back to his own body.

Where to watch Quantum Leap:

Quantum leap, nbc (2022 – present).

travel tv show canada

Speaking of Quantum Leap , in 2022 NBC revived the 1989 series into a more modern take on the cult classic.

In this new Quantum Leap , thirty years have passed since Dr. Sam Beckett vanished into the Quantum Leap accelerator, and the Quantum Leap project was put to rest.

Now the project is restarted with a new team, who tries to puzzle together the mysteries behind Beckett and his time-traveling machine.

So, we follow Ben Song, the lead physicist of the Quantum Leap time travel project, who gets lost in the past after leaping back in time.

As he tries to return to the present he is helped by his fiancée Addison Augustine, who appears to him as a hologram during each leap, and the team back in the present time.

Where to watch Quantum Leap reboot:

The way home, hallmark channel (2023 – present).

travel tv show canada

Among the newest time travel shows on this list is Hallmark’s The Way Home which has already been renewed for a second season.

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women who learn that they can time travel after discovering a magic pond on their family’s farm in Port Haven.

When Kat and her daughter Alice return to Port Haven and are forced to move in with Alice’s estranged mother Del, the three women use time travel to uncover their family history, including what really happened to Kat’s little brother Jacob and whether they can prevent his disappearance.

Where to watch The Way Home:

Russian doll, netflix (2019 – 2022).

travel tv show canada

Netflix’s Russian Doll deviates from the traditional time travel theme of a willing traveler in one specific timeline because Russian Doll’s protagonist Nadia Vulvokov not only has absolutely no choice or control over her so-called time traveling, but hers is also a time loop.

She wakes up every day having to relive the day of her 36th birthday party in New York City; every time, she dies and comes back to the exact same moment.

Every time, Nadia scrambles to figure out what happens to her and tries to prevent her death, leading her to find Alan, a man who is experiencing the same time loop.

Where to watch Russian Doll:

Undone, prime video (2019 – present).

travel tv show canada

Undone may be an animated series, but it certainly isn’t geared toward younger audiences; though there is a touch of comedy, the series leans more towards the psychological drama genre and “explores the elastic nature of reality”.

The series follows Alma Winograd-Diaz right after she gets into a near-fatal car accident.

Right before the crash, she has a strange vision of her dead father, and right after it, she finds that she now has the ability to manipulate and move through time.

Using this newfound power, she travels between time periods to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father’s death.

Where to watch Undone:

Voyagers, nbc (1982 – 1983).

travel tv show canada

Premiering back in the early 1980s, NBC’s Voyagers! Is set in a world where time travel already exists.

In fact, there’s already a secret society in place that trains its members, called Voyagers, to go back in time and make sure that historical events happen exactly the way they’re supposed to – otherwise it could affect the present in unexpected ways.

One such Voyager is Phineas Bogg, although he isn’t exactly the best at the job.

During an accidental trip to 1982, he meets the young Jeffrey Jones and ends up bringing him along on one of his missions.

Having lost his Guidebook, Phineas now needs to rely on the extremely smart Jeffrey to get history right.

Where to watch Voyagers!:

Fringe, fox (2008 – 2013).

travel tv show canada

Fox’s Fringe is a series that was well into the science fiction genre, with parallel universes, supernatural abilities, biotechnology, doomsday predictions, and of course, time travel.

The title is taken from fringe science, which is a branch that deals with scientific theories riddled with skepticism or even having been disproven already.

In Fringe , Special Agent Olivia Dunham is assigned to oversee the FBI ’s Fringe Division, which is run by Peter Bishop and his father Walter.

Together, the team uses both fringe science and Olivia’s knowledge in investigative techniques to explore the unexplained.

In the process, they discover a larger mystery involving parallel universes and alternate timelines .

Where to watch Fringe:

Time after time, abc (2017).

travel tv show canada

ABC’s Time After Time is based on the novel of the same name written by Kevin Williamson in 1979.

In addition to that, each episode takes its title from a line in Cyndi Lauper’s song, which was inspired by the film (and subsequently, the same book!).

In Time After Time , we are taken to H.G. Wells’ home in 1893.

During a dinner party, he reveals his time machine – right before his guest John Stevenson is arrested for actually being Jack the Ripper .

John escapes through the time machine and Wells follows him straight into the present: 2017. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game as John attempts to gain control of the machine.

Where to watch Time After Time:

11.22.63, hulu (2016).

travel tv show canada

When you have anything with Stephen King involved, you know it’s going to be great.

Hulu’s eight-episode miniseries 11.22.63 is based on King’s novel 11/22/63 and is a science fiction thriller like no other.

Starring James Franco in the lead role, 11.22.63 follows Jake Epping, an English teacher from Maine .

His best friend Al reveals a time travel machine and asks him to take over the mission he’s been working on: to travel to the 60s and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Will Jake be successful in changing a past that simply refuses to be changed?

Where to watch 11.22.63:

The 4400, usa network/sky one (2004 – 2007).

travel tv show canada

The 4400 is yet another slightly different take on the idea of time travel, in that there has been just one (fairly significant) shift forward in time, to the present.

Beginning in 1946, individuals who were easily overlooked or marginalized by society slowly began disappearing through beams of green light.

Now, all 4400 of them (hence the title) have been returned to the present day – without having aged a day and in some cases, even manifesting supernatural abilities like telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.

Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris are assigned to investigate the phenomenon and find out why the 4400 have returned.

NOTE: For a fresher take on the show, you can also check out the reboot of the original series which is currently airing on The CW.

Where to watch The 4400:

Somewhere between, abc (2017).

travel tv show canada

When tragedy strikes our lives, we always wish there was something we could’ve done to prevent it.

In ABC’s Somewhere Between we meet Laura Price, a successful news producer with a great career, a loving husband who’s a district attorney, and a beautiful daughter named Serena.

However, her life changes when the serial killer she is helping the cops to catch kills Serena.

Distraught with grief , Laura attempts to complete suicide but is unsuccessful, instead waking up having time-traveled to a week before Serena’s death.

She teams up with Nico, a former SFPD detective who experienced the same reset and wants to find the real killer to change his brother’s fate as well.

Where to watch Somewhere Between:

Terra nova, fox (2011).

travel tv show canada

Terra Nova takes its viewers to both extremes of the time-traveling timeline.

The present-day is 2149, where overpopulation has threatened to deplete the Earth’s resources.

In an attempt to save Earth and mankind, scientists have found a way to travel back in time, sending groups of humans back to the Cretaceous Period to set up colonies.

Terra Nova focuses primarily on Elisabeth and Jim Shannon, and their three children, who have joined the 10th pilgrimage to Terra Nova.

They offer their expertise as a trauma surgeon and former narcotics detective and help those in charge with stopping those whose intentions go against the greater good.

Where to watch Terra Nova:

Frequency, the cw (2016 – 2017).

travel tv show canada

One concept in time travel is known as “the butterfly effect”, wherein one small change in time may have great effects elsewhere.

Frequency demonstrates this concept perfectly.

Raimy Sullivan is an NYPD detective who, after a strange weather phenomenon, discovers that she can communicate with her dead father through his old ham radio.

Believing he was a corrupt cop, she learns the truth and warns him of his murder, thus saving his life.

However, this has profound effects on the future – Raimy’s present.

Now, they must work together across time to save her father and preserve the present.

Where to watch Frequency:

Life on mars, bbc one (2006).

travel tv show canada

In many of the shows on the list so far, the protagonists experience a time loop that’s triggered at the point of their death.

It’s no different for Sam Tyler, the main character in the British series Life on Mars .

Sam is a Detective Chief Inspector with the Greater Manchester Police, but one day he accidentally gets hit by a car.

When he awakens, he’s in 1973 and working at one rank lower than he was: Detective Inspector.

The selling point of Life on Mars , however, is that we’re left unsure if Sam’s predicament is due to his actual death, a comatose, or time travel.

Always A Witch (or Siempre Bruja in its original Spanish title) is a Colombian series that is set in both present-day Colombia and the 17th century .

The series follows Carmen Eguiliuz, a young 19-year-old witch who, after committing the crime of falling in love with a white man in 1646 colonial Colombia, is scheduled to be burned at the stake.

She gets a chance to escape to a new life when the mysterious wizard Aldemar makes a deal with her: he will save the man she loves if she travels into the future to find the woman who can break his curse.

Beforeigners, hbo (2019 – present).

HBO’s Beforeigners is a Norwegian sci-fi crime drama series and the first Norwegian original from HBO Europe.

The title is a clever play on words centered on the general plot: a group of “foreigners” has suddenly shown up at a neighborhood in Oslo, and they are all from “before” times, or several different time periods in history.

Whether from the Viking period , the Stone Age, or the more recent 19th century , each of these ‘Beforeigners’ tries to integrate in modern-day Norwegian society.

One of them even partners with a detective to investigate first a murdered Stone Age woman, then a series of murderers tied to Jack the Ripper.

Alice was a South Korean sci-fi series that aired in late 2020.

In the lead-up to the main plot, the show’s background is explained to its viewers.

Set in 2050, time travel is monitored by an agency called Alice, which sends its clients to the past to help find closure with deceased loved ones.

Alice one day sends two agents to 1992 in order to find the Book of Prophecy, but one of them disappears with the book and her unborn child.

In 2020, the child becomes a detective and in his investigation into his mother’s death in 2010, discovers the existence of Alice and time travel.

Live up to your name, tvn (2017).

Yet another South Korean time travel series , Live Up to Your Name initially takes its viewers some 400 years into the past, right in the middle of the Joseon dynasty.

There we meet Heo Im, a doctor of traditional Korean medicine who also specializes in acupuncture.

On one of his treatments of the king’s migraines, he made a mistake and was charged with treason.

Chased by the king’s soldiers, he’s shot with an arrow and presumed dead when he falls into the river – except he ends up waking up in present-day Seoul instead, where he meets cardiothoracic surgeon Choi Yeon-kyung.

Our third South Korean series is Netflix’s My Only Love Song , which aired in 2017.

We start off in modern-day Korea where we meet Soo-jung, a talented and top-level actress.

However, it seems that the fame may have gotten to her head as she’s arrogant, and believes fame and money make the world go round.

When things don’t go her way on her new show, she winds up in a time-traveling van that takes her to the 6th century.

There, she meets a man much like herself in terms of arrogance, but his hidden soft spot and generosity towards the poor changes her perspective on her own life and self.

Signal, tvn (2016).

travel tv show canada

Signal is based on the 2000 American film Frequency , but another thing that sets this South Korean series apart from others is that the cases investigated in the series are also based on real-life crimes in the country.

Signal follows a cold case profiler from 2015 and a detective from 1989 simultaneously; they discover they’re able to communicate with each other through an old walkie-talkie.

Using this unique ability to provide much-needed foresight in investigations, they team up to both solve and in some cases, even prevent these horrific crimes.

Rooftop prince, sbs (2012).

travel tv show canada

Last but not least, South Korea brings its last time-traveling series to the table with Rooftop Prince , a comedy-drama filled with intrigue, mixed identities, and possible reincarnations.

Crown Prince Lee Gak from the Joseon dynasty accidentally time travels to 2012 with three others from his entourage, and their lives are thrown into a whirlwind.

He crosses paths with Se-na, who looks exactly like his recently deceased wife.

In the hopes of getting answers about his wife’s mysterious drowning, he assumes the identity of another man who he also looks exactly like and attempts to marry Se-na in this timeline as well.

i was looking for this comment. such an underrated show

I concur. This was definitely a great one. It certainly provides a lot of food for thought.

Some of the information in the Doctor Who one is wrong. It started in 1963, it was only revived in 2005 (you put 2006), and it’s been going for 39 seasons, as of June 2022

Thanks for letting me know! I updated the article accordingly.
